Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Life drawn from the Eucharist makes all kinds of demands on you to proclaim the meaning and greatness of this mystery. You are called especially to give the sacrament its full effect in unity, brotherhood and service. The unity of all Christians and all peoples must be closest to your heart. Always and everywhere you are called to rise above oppositions and divisions in the universal love of Christ. Always look for what unites and fight everything that estranges and separates men and women from each other. Your calling gives you the privilege of living the Eucharistic mystery to the full. So reject nothing which the Church enjoins on your faith, and accept nothing that might obscure the full meaning of this sacrament. To Christ the Lord who dwells ever present in His gifts you can bring your life’s adoration. Your whole life must be worship in spirit and truth, your whole existence a celebration and adoration of the presence of God. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING
Be seated
Reader
A reading from the First Book of Samuel.
Reader Allll
On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?" After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: "O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head." As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, "How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine." But Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time." Then Eli answered, "Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him." And she said, "Let your servant find favour in your sight." Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and worshipped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, "I have asked him of the Lord." 1 Samuel 1:4-20 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

CANTICLE
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
My heart exults in the Lord, my strength is exalted in my God. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. There is no Holy One like you, O Lord, nor any Rock like you, our God. For you are a God of knowledge and by you our actions are weighed. Antiphon The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full now search bread, but those who were hungry are well fed. The barren woman has borne sevenfold, but she who has many children is forlorn. Both the poor and the rich are of your making, you bring low and you also exalt. Antiphon You raise up the poor from the dust, and lift the needy from the ash heap. You make them sit with the rulers, and inherit a place of honour. For the pillars of the earth are yours and on them you have set the world. Antiphon 1 Samuel 2:1-10
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews.
Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God," and since then has been waiting "until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet." For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds," he also adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more." Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us HIGH MASS | 9
approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:11-25

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!" Then Jesus asked him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down." When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, "Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?" Then Jesus began to say to them, "Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs." Mark 13:1-8

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY The Advent Quiet Day will be on Saturday 12 December, from 10 am until 3 pm. I shall lead the day, in which there will be three addresses, Mass at 12 noon, and time for silent prayer and reflection. I strongly encourage as many as possible to come, even if only for some of the day; if it is not possible for you, please try to find some time to be still and pray at home. Our liturgy is beautiful and uplifting, but I am feeling that we are not so good at offering opportunity for silent, listening prayer. This Quiet Day is to help us prepare for the coming anew of Christ at Christmas, of course, but this year I see it also as a time of waiting upon God and of prayer for St. James' as we move through this interim process to the work of the Canonical Committee and the appointment of a new Rector. Please, if you can, mark it in your Calendar now. The most important strand of our life at St. James' is the regular offering of the Daily Office and
Mass, the opus Dei, the work of God: we join in worship day by day with the whole Church across the world and down the ages, to give due praise and glory to God and to pray for the Church and the world, our parish of St. James' and the community of the Downtown Eastside where we are called to serve. As the evening hymn puts it, “As o'er each continent and island the dawn leads on another day, the voice of prayer is never silent, nor dies the strain of praise away.” It has been a strength of St. James', certainly in recent times, that the Daily Office, Morning and Evening Prayer, has been sustained by lay-people, not just seen as the duty of the clergy. A faithful few continue this service, but there are an increasing number of gaps in the rota. Deacon Joyce would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in joining the team and able to offer one morning or evening each week.

Submissions on all topics are welcome, though priority will be given to those related to the theme. Please send us your photographs, artwork, poetry, and articles (maximum, about 500 words). Submissions may be left in the PAX mail slot outside the Church Office, or emailed to stap@shaw.ca

Today's gospel reading tells us Not to Worry! Jesus tells us through his disciples that God has a plan and we should trust that plan. Jesus also wants us to know that when we are troubled, we should remember we are all part of God's plan. Sometimes we experience trouble in our lives and sometimes we are sad. That's the time to pray and remember that God is with us and we can look forward to better times ahead with God by our side. Prayer Dear Father, In times of trouble and sadness, please help us to remember that we all have hard days, but that you are with us and we can look forward to brighter days ahead with you. We thank you God! We pray this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ. Amen
RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN The Mothers’ Union is again promoting the White Ribbon Campaign which is known throughout the world as the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, November 25 to December 10. November 25 is the International Day Against Violence Against Women and December 10 the International Human Rights Day. Throughout the world, women and girls are subject to many different forms of violence and abuse because of their gender throughout their lives. These include
physical, emotional, sexual and psychological abuse, forced prostitution, abortion and child marriage, human trafficking, female infanticide and honorbased killing. Violence affects women and girls regardless of age, race, religion, class, sexuality and marital status and often occurs within the home. Mothers’ Union is inviting everyone to wear a white ribbon during the sixteen days to bring awareness to these injustices. The ribbons will be available on Sunday, November 22, in the Narthex. SOCKS FOR MISSION TO SEAFARERS Mission to Seafarers offers gifts to visiting seafarers during the Christmas season. Anglican churches throughout the Diocese collect warm socks as a contribution to these gifts. You are invited to join us in with a donation. Socks should contain some wool, and may be left in Helen`s cupboard, or given to any member of the Women`s Guild who will be seasonally wrapping all socks donated from around the Diocese on Friday December 4 at the Mission to Seafarers house on the waterfront. Rides available at the church after 9 am, with work starting at 9:30 am. Good fellowship and snacks are guaranteed. COMMEMORATION St. Margaret Queen of Scotland, 1093 November 16
Margaret was an Anglo-Saxon princess who became the consort of King Malcolm III of Scotland in 1069. She bore eight children and through her husband initiated civilizing reforms in the Scottish royal court, the Scottish Church, and the Scottish nation. But Margaret is chiefly remembered for her efforts on behalf of Scotland’s poor. She not only gave out large sums of money but also ensured that institutions already in place did indeed provide relief for the homeless, the hungry, and the orphaned. In addition, Margaret supplied the funds which purchased freedom for those Anglo-Saxons who had been sold into slavery by their Norman conquerors. Hence, to her title of Queen is added the still greater title for a Christian — “Helper of the Poor.” For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION St. Hugh Bishop of Lincoln, 1200 November 17
Today we commemorate Hugh, a twelfth century bishop whose rare holiness and generous love nurtured the people of Lincoln from 1186 until his death fourteen years later. As a young man Hugh joined the Carthusians, an order of monks who dwelt high in the French Alps. They kept communal life to a minimum and made each monk free to pursue contemplative prayer in solitude and silence.
In 1175 Hugh was sent to head the first Carthusian house in England. His leadership proved so effective that, eleven years later, King Henry II appointed him bishop of Lincoln, then the largest diocese in the kingdom. He reorganized the institutional life of his unwieldy see; he restored Lincoln cathedral, even joining in the work with his own hands; and he took a leading part in defending the Church against the policies of King Henry and his son, Richard the Lion-Heart. He did not spend all his time with senior clergy and mighty kings; on the contrary, he was constantly on the move among his people as he sought to keep in touch with their needs. He also took the side of those who were ostracized or oppressed. On two occasions he threw himself into anti-Semitic mobs and singlehandedly rescued their Jewish victims from being murdered. On another occasion he rebuked foolish clerics who said that God disdained to be loved by women. He asked them to think, saying, “To no man was it granted to be called the father of God, but it was given to a woman to be the Mother of God.” As a bishop, Hugh shared the inner freedom he had learned as a Carthusian, and the people responded with gratitude and love. When he died in 1200, his coffin was escorted into Lincoln cathedral not only by kings, archbishops, and abbots, but also by a mighty throng of ordinary women and men — all of whom felt that they were not burying a bishop so much as honouring a friend.
