Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection MATTHEW COPSE Once in thy secret close, now almost bare, Peace yielded up her bountiful largess; The dawn dropp'd sunshine thro' thy leafy dress; The sunset bathed thy glade with beauty rare.
Spring once wove here her tapestry of flowers, The primrose sweet, the errant celandine; The blue-bell and the wild rose that doth twine Its beauty 'round the laughing summer hours. Here lovers stole unseen at deep'ning eve, High-tide within their hearts, love in their eyes, And told a tale whose magic never dies That only they who love can quite believe. Now 'mid thy splinter'd trees the great shells crash, The subterranean mines thy deeps divide; And men from Death and Terror there do hide Hide in thy caves from shrapnel's deadly splash. Yet 'mid thy ruins, shrine now desolate, The Spring breaks thro' and visions many a spot With promise of the wild-rose - tho' belate And the eternal blue forget-me-not. So Nature flourishes amid decay, Defiant of the fate that laid her low; So Man in triumph scorning Death below Visions the springtide of a purer day: Dreams of the day when rampant there will rise The flowers of Truth and Freedom from the blood Of noble youth who died: when there will bud The flower of Love from human sacrifice. There by the fallen youth, where heroes lie, Close by each simple cross the flowers will spring, The bonnes enfants will wander in Spring, And lovers dream those dreams that never die. by John William Streets (killed and missing in action on 1st July 1916 aged 31) 4 | HIGH MASS

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Malachi. See, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble; the day that comes shall burn them up, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. Malachi 4:1-2a

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, and we did not eat anyone’s bread without paying for it; but with toil and labour we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right. 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, Jesus said, ‘As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.’ They asked him, ‘Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?’ And he said, ‘Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, “I am he!” and, “The time is near!” Do not go after them. ‘When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.’ Then he said to them, ‘Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. ‘But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defence in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls. Luke 21:5-19

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +
Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible LETTER FROM BISHOP MELISSA The 2016 Presidential Election Dear People of the Diocese of New Westminster, I awoke this morning, as many of you did, in shock, grief and confusion as the elections in the US concluded. While, as a person born in the US, I could offer my own analysis of what happened, I'm more interested in saying just a few things to you in the face of these events in the life of our neighbour to the south, a neighbour who deeply influences us and the rest of the world. Stay a while with your uncomfortable feelings and the things you may now be curious about. One piece I read this morning talked about our own urge to get past the uncomfortable feelings that many of us may be feeling today. I encourage you to stay in touch with both the feelings and the questions that are coming up for you out of what has occurred over these many months. It may be that God is working in you as you experience your own response and as you discern how you may wish to respond. "In a dark time the eye begins to see" - Theodore Roethke. I believe that a time of confusion, fear and grief throws into sharp relief what we value and who or what we are
founded on. We, you and I, are founded on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. We, you and I, worship and adore the One who identified with "the other" and who asks us to live in solidarity with the other. We, you and I, follow the One who came to bring justice, peace, hope, and loving kindness to the world. We, you and I, walk the path of the One who called us to care for and serve one another. And at this time, I believe it's important to remember that our kindness, our service and our care are never just something we get to extend to those who agree with us or with whom we feel affinity. As Christians we are asked to extend this kindness, this care, this service, to all. From The Letter to the Hebrews: "...let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." I would ask that we pray for our friends and neighbours in the US. Pray especially today for those who are afraid of what the future may hold for them. I would ask that we pray for those around the world who are anxious about what the events in the US will mean for them. I would ask that we pray for all those in governmental, civic and religious leadership in the US and in Canada. And, finally, I would ask that we pray for ourselves: for our
Inform. Inspire. Invite. diocese, its parishes, leaders and people, and for the people of the Episcopal Church, that we all be given the grace to live our lives as Christians with commitment, perseverance and hope. This is our calling. Now is always the time to enact that calling. Let me close by expressing my gratitude to all of you who have personally offered me care during this time. It has been sobering to witness these events unfolding in the country of my birth. It has been sobering to try to make sense of some of the things that have been said and done during this long and emotional campaign. Thank you for your understanding, your interest and your tenderness. As always, it is an honour to serve you here in Canada and here in this great diocese, Right Reverend Melissa Skelton THE THURIBLE THURIBLE || 25 19 THE

KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. This week in the Gospel, Jesus is hanging out with his friends in the Temple. They are saying to Jesus how beautiful all the stones and decorations inside were, so very beautiful. Jesus warned them to be careful because he thought a lot of people would try to fool them and say they were more important than Jesus and that everyone should listen to them and follow what they said. Jesus assured his friends that as long as they really believed in him and followed in his ways, they would always be safe, he actually says not a hair on our head will be harmed. Even though some people do not believe in Jesus, he asks us even now to stand up for him and tell people that we do believe in him and we will follow his ways. Prayer Hello God. Please give us the courage and faith to stand up for Jesus. Help us to share the good news of your Son by loving one another, even those who think differently from us. Amen.

St. Margaret Queen of Scotland, 1093 November 16 Margaret was an Anglo-Saxon princess who became the consort of King Malcolm III of Scotland in 1069. She bore eight children and through her husband initiated civilizing reforms in the Scottish royal court, the Scottish Church, and the Scottish nation. But Margaret is chiefly remembered for her efforts on behalf of Scotland’s poor. She not only gave out large sums of money but also ensured that institutions already in place did indeed provide relief for the homeless, the hungry, and the orphaned. In addition, Margaret supplied the funds which purchased freedom for those Anglo-Saxons who had been sold into slavery by their Norman conquerors. Hence, to her title of Queen is added the still greater title for a Christian — “Helper of the Poor.” For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION
St. Hilda Abbess of Whitby, 680 November 18 Hilda was born into the royal family of Northumbria and lived a quiet, devout life in the world until the age of thirty-three, when she decided to take the habit of a nun. Almost at once she was given charge of a small community at Wearmouth, and her guidance proved so effective that she was asked to renew the life of another community nearby. In the year 657 she finally moved to Whitby, a monastery which included a household of monks and a household of nuns. Under her leadership it became the most famous religious community in all England. The Venerable Bede reported: “Not only was Hilda an outstanding example of holy life to all who were in her monastery, but she also provided an opportunity for salvation and repentance to many who lived far away and who heard the happy story of her industry and virtue.” Bede went on to say: “So great was Hilda’s prudence that not only ordinary people but also kings and princes sometimes sought and received her advice when they were in difficulties. She compelled those under her direction to devote so much time to the study of the Holy Scriptures and so much time to the doing of good works, that there was no trouble in finding many who were fitted ... for the service of the altar.” So, we give thanks for Hilda of Whitby, who died in the year 680 and used her own gifts of holiness and wisdom to nurture holy gifts in others, that they might serve the people of Christ and make seventhcentury England a household of God.
