High Mass

Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost | November 17, 2013 | 10:30 am

Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES • To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Notes on Practical and Cheerful Giving First we need to be asked to give to St. James'. Then we need some compelling reasons to give – reasons that resonate personally. Finally, it has to be easy to give. By now the asking has been done by mail and from the pulpit. If you didn't receive your stewardship letter by mail from St. James', please pick up an Intention Card from a table in the Narthex (church entrance), fill it out and put it in the collection plate. Also in the Narthex, you can pick up and read a written copy of Fr. Mark's sermon on Stewardship or watch his sermon on-line. Here are some thoughts on why I give my time, talent and money to St. James'. This is my worship community and spiritual home. I'm grounded here and that gives me the strength to do the work of the church in the community. I feel supported here by you who let me know that I belong to a faith family. Sure I do chores just like I would in any family: I cook, clean and iron here almost every week. But it's the spiritual strength that I discover here that supports my community service that is the most important to me. At this time of year, I know exactly what my income is going to be for the coming year and what extraordinary expenses I might have. I live just below the poverty line set by Statistics Canada for a single person. But my children are raised and educated and capable of raising my grandchildren. My parents are dead and I have no siblings. So my financial needs are small and I can plan what I can give annually to St. James’ and other communities I like to support. I give annually between 10 and 20% of my gross income. Philip Green, St. James' Envelope Secretary, makes it very easy for me to give monthly on my credit card. I never see the money so am not tempted to hold back. I like to support the Coming Home Society, the Street Outreach Initiative, and the St. James' Music Academy. I make those donations with my one monthly donation to St. James' and Philip sends the funds to the appropriate groups. It's so easy! I ask you to plan to give what you can and do it with a loving heart. Thank you. A stewardship moment given by parishioner Pat McSherry on Sunday November 10th, 2013

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the former things shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I am creating; for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a delight. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it, or the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labour in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord and their descendants as well. Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord. Isaiah 65:17-25

And on that day you shall say, Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name; make his deeds known among the peoples; see that they remember that his name is exalted. Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, and this is known in all the world. Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. Antiphon From Isaiah 12

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. Now we command you, beloved in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, and we did not eat anyone's bread without paying for it; but with toil and labour we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. This was not because we do not have that right but in order to give you an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right. 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted." Luke 18:9-14

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, addressed a gathering of Diocesan clergy last week. Although he spoke on a range of topics, the substance of his talk was dedicated to helping us “pray our way into the episcopal election,” which will be held on November 30th. “You are called to guard the faith, unity and discipline of the Church.” (BAS p.636) So we were invited to begin with the ordinal, the rite for consecrating a bishop, in the Book of Alternative Services as a place of departure for our prayers. Our Primate then directed us to an essay by Bishop Michael Ingham which contains a vivid personal description, well worth the read, of being a Bishop and its struggles: “I believe the majority of the House of Bishops would say the greatest frustration in their ministry is that they don't feel able to live out a spiritual style of leadership.” (“The Episcopate” in All Who Minister: New Ways of Serving God’s Peoples.) Here Ingham quotes a former Bishop of Alaska.

Our Archbishop drew heavily upon five retreat addresses given by Archbishop Rowan Williams before the 2008 Lambeth Conference. “The bishop whose ministry is centered on the Eucharist, performed with the wholeness of the Church in mind, will be a bishop who is silent in respect of many of the claims and pressures that are around, holding still so that God's word—not the bishop's—can come through. Open, therefore to the differences, the difficulties in letting God's word through, but also beginning, maturing, ending in the quiet that allows God to be God and doesn't impose the agenda of the individual and their fleshly nature.” (Address .3)

FORMATION ON SUNDAY THE LIFE OF CHRIST IN THE CHRISTIAN IMAGINATION SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24, BISHOPS’ ROOM Building Heaven on Earth with Rhodri Windsor-Liscombe This will be an introit—introduction—to the long and diverse Christian tradition of endeavouring to give material form to the mystical, structural equivalent to concepts of faith and spatial order to worship. The emphasis will be on appropriation of established architectural motifs for the manifestation of Christian tenet and divine immanence; together with design innovation both to accommodate changing theological understanding and aesthetic imagination. In that sense the talk will hope to capture the profound inspiration of faith. ALL WELCOME!

But renewal should be broadly understood. How do we make all things new? In our sacramental experience? Or how may we understand the meaning of “renewal” – not the mere record of passing change? Are there historical events that might be recalled which have brought about special renewal in your life, or in the church? As usual, we are delighted to receive brief articles (with a word limit of about 500 words), or original poems, and illustrations. We need to have submissions by Monday, November 25th in order to meet publication on December 24th. Please send your submissions to Tracy Russell at tracylee.russell@gmail.com or leave them in the box next to the Church Office.

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN

PARISH REVIEW

November is Stewardship month at St. James’. The Stewardship Committee, chaired by Rhodri WindsorLiscombe, has just completed an every-member mailout to thank the people of St. James’ for supporting the work of our Parish over the past year. Here, “the mystery of God is proclaimed in word, sacred action and practical forms of outreach.” (Fr. Mark)

Advent Sunday (December 1st) is the culmination date for the intensive period of the Parish Review which began in May. At this time we are planning three things: •

Included in the Stewardship package is an Intention Card. After prayerful consideration, you are invited to fill it out and return it, either in the offering plate on Sunday, or by mail. If you did not receive a Stewardship package, please contact the Church Office. • At Mass on Sundays in November you will hear a “Stewardship Moment” – a parishioner’s reflection on what it means to belong to this community of faith, and the relationship it inspires with God, the giver of all gifts. Each Sunday’s “Stewardship Moment” will be published and available in the Narthex. Please pick up a copy of Pat McSherry’s Reflection from November 10. “Here are some thoughts on why I give my time, talent and money to St. James'. This is my worship community and spiritual home. I'm grounded here and that gives me the strength to do the work of the church in the community. I feel supported here by you who let me know that I belong to a faith family. Sure I do chores just like I would in any family: I cook, clean and iron here almost every week. But it's the spiritual strength that I discover here that supports my community service that is the most important to me.” (Pat McSherry)

An Advent Pastoral letter will be available to all parishioners. It will articulate a distillation of recommendations for action which have been identified during the review process. I am working in partnership with the Trustees and Collegium who will endorse this pastoral letter to the Parish. The letter will express the commitment of the lay and ordained leaders in our midst. A Ministry and Mission Plan for St. James’ 2014 will be created as an instrument for the implementation of the actions which have been generated by the Parish Review. The traditional Advent Quiet Day of the Parish (Saturday December 7th) will be dedicated as a day of vigil with the purpose of commending our endeavours described by the Parish Review to the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit.

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK In our parish right now, through the process of the Parish Review, we are being asked to listen very carefully to what God is calling us to be and do at this time. This is a communal act of obedience, of hearing and heeding; a time of listening and through experiment to move together to being a greater expression of God’s kingdom. THE UNCLUTTERED HEART: MAKING ROOM FOR GOD DURING ADVENT with Leah Postman Saturdays: November 30; December 7, 14, & 21 10:30 am – 12 pm, Bishop’s Room As we enter into one of the busiest, most pressured and distractible times of the year, how are we able to create space in our inner and outer lives in preparation for the birth of Christ? What does this look like to us? How can we possibly squeeze in one more thing to do? You are invited to join in a four-week Advent series which will endeavour to be a place that allows for letting go of the demands of the season and the opportunity to clear away obstructions to God—our worries, distractions, negative habits—so that our hearts and spirits are open to God’s movement during this holy time. Based on Beth A. Richardson’s book, we will discern ways to go deeper in connection with God, not just during formal worship but throughout the moments of our days. We will meet four Saturday mornings through Advent and will spend time reflecting, discussing and finding stillness as a way of encountering and being mindful of God. Also, a meditation will be emailed daily to all 28 | THE THURIBLE

participants as an added way to allow us to pause and connect with our hearts in the midst of this busy season. To register, please contact the St. James’ Office 604.685.2532 at or call Leah at 604.318.3460, or for further information. ST. JAMES’ MUSIC ACADEMY CONCERT Please join us for our 7th Annual SJMA Christmas Concert to celebrate the achievements of our students on December 6th from 6:30pm-8:30 pm in the Church.

SAINTS THIS WEEK St. Hugh Bishop of Lincoln, 1200 November 17

St. Elizabeth Princess of Hungary, 1231 November 19

On two occasions he threw himself into anti-Semitic mobs and singlehandedly rescued their Jewish victims from being murdered. On another occasion he rebuked foolish clerics who said that God disdained to be loved by women. He asked them to think, saying, “To no man was it granted to be called father of God, but it was given to a woman to be Mother of God.”

Today we remember Elizabeth of Hungary, a thirteenth-century princess who devoted her short life to serving the poor, the sick, and the homeless.

As a bishop, Hugh shared the inner freedom he had learned as a Carthusian, and people responded with gratitude and love. When he died in 1200, his coffin was escorted into Lincoln cathedral not only by kings, archbishops, and abbots, but also by a mighty throng of ordinary women and men — all of wh0m felt that they were not burying a bishop so much as honouring a friend

She was born in 1207 and at the age of fourteen became the wife of Ludwig, the ruler of Thuringia. Their marriage was happy and with her husband’s support Elizabeth not only cared for their own children but also found time to supervise various projects for the aid of the poor. She founded hospitals and homes for the elderly, and provided shelters for orphans and abused children. But then Ludwig died, and her brother-in-law drove her from the royal court. Elizabeth joined the Franciscans as a lay-associate and adopted a life of poverty. She did menial labour in the very hospices which she had founded and went into the homes of poor people to help them with their daily tasks. Love for Christ kept her going in the most brutalizing conditions, but in 12231 she succumbed to overwork and a sudden virus. She was only twenty-four when she died.
