To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 8:30 am Low Mass, Lady Chapel 9:15 am Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 10:30 am High Mass, Church 12:00 pm Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 12:30 pm Formation, Bishops’ Room 5:00 pm Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel ______________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection But you shall seek the place that the Lord your God will choose out of all your tribes to put his name and make his habitation there. There you shall go, and there you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the contribution that you present, your vow offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock. HYMN 327 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Lo, God Is Here! Let Us Adore Lo, God is here! let us adore and own how awesome is this place; let all within us feel God's power and bow before the hidden face. Redeeming Lord, your grace we prove, serve you with awe, with reverence love. Lo, God is here! Both day and night united choirs of angels sing; to God, enthroned above all height, heaven's host their noblest praises bring; disdain not, Lord, our meaner song, who praise you with a stammering tongue. Being of beings, may our praise your courts with grateful fragrance fill; still may we stand before your face, still hear and do your sovereign will; to you may all our thoughts arise, ceaseless, accepted sacrifice.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Daniel. ‘At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. Daniel 12:1-3

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord, my good above all other.” All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, upon those who are noble among the people. Antiphon But those who run after other gods shall have their troubles multiplied. Their libations of blood I will not offer, nor take the names of their gods upon my lips. O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; it is you who uphold my lot. Antiphon My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; indeed, I have a goodly heritage. I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand I shall not fall. Antiphon
HIGH MASS | 9
My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope. For you will not abandon me to the grave, nor let your holy one see the Pit. You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Antiphon Psalm 16
EPISTLE READING
Reader
A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God," and since then has been waiting "until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet." For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:11-14, 19-25

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!" Then Jesus asked him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down." When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, "Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?" Then Jesus began to say to them, "Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs." Mark 13:1-8

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible Notes from the Clergy Time, talents, treasure. It’s stewardship month. Every year I find myself reflecting on what I give and how much I give to God before I sort out bills, donate to other causes and spend my time on this or that. Every year I oscillate between feeling guilty and frustrated about all of the above.
When I graduated from seminary, the rabbi at Vancouver School of Theology, gave the graduating class this piece of advice. “Find an act of service to others that you do, and tell no one about it.” I thought of the passage from Matthew: Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. (NIV). I think as I am growing into my priesthood, this piece of advice has been especially helpful because I could lean back on the fact that I work for the church and therefore all my time and talents are in service to God. Then comes the financial bit. Vancouver is expensive. Both those who have enough and those who do not can struggle to give financially to the church to continue our ministry to the glory of God. I find it hard to assess what an appropriate tithe should be with so many people weighing in
on the subject. Some say give what you can, some say 10%, before tax, after tax…and so the debate goes on. However, I read an interesting piece from the Episcopal Church in the United States entitled: Tip or Tithe? As you may gather from the title it is about offering our first fruits (our tithes) to God first, rather than leaving what is left over as a tip. I found it a helpful analogy. This year I have opted to give via the Pre-Authorized Donation Program. The forms for this are located in the narthex and by the entrance to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. This program allows me to give my first fruits directly to the church without me having to remember my chequebook, envelopes or cash. If you struggle to stay organized like me, this could be a good option for you, and you can change the amount anytime. However you decide to give this year, I urge you to pray about it so you can give from a generous place and with a grateful heart. Time, talents and treasure, to the glory of God.

Using the deceptively simple device of telling the Christmas story backwards Stephen Cottrell helps us encounter it as though for the first time. His approach enables us to get under the skin of a complex narrative, giving us insights into its many horrors as well as its joys. The books for this study are available for a one time suggested donation of $15.00 each. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. in our own lives, and in the life of the wider community of the Downtown Eastside? Mindful of our strong tradition of social concern alongside our rich liturgy and sacramental worship, how is St. James’ being called to serve today?
