High Mass

Second Sunday after Pentecost | June 2, 2013 | 10:30 am

Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES •To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

High Mass

The image on the front page is a photograph of our Ethiopian Processional Cross, found in 1920 in a South African tribal hut (in use as a cooking grill) by a missionary priest. It was presented to St. James’ Church in 1937, where it has since been used in all festal processions. It has been estimated to date from between 1470−1700 when, according to the inscription on the shaft, it was presented to the Ethiopian Church of Kidana-Mehrat, dedicated to the honour of Our Lady. This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Discarded copies will be recycled. 2 | HIGH MASS

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection CHRIST IS OUR PEACE Peace is the only begotten God, of whom the apostle says, “For he himself is our peace.” So people who cherish peace are children of peace. But some may be thought to be peacemakers who make peace with their enemies but remain heedless of evils within. They are never reconciled in heart with their own internal enemies, yet they are willing to make peace with others. They are parodies of peace rather than lovers of peace. For that peace is blessed which is set in the heart, not that which is set in words. Do you want to know who is truly a peacemaker? Hear the prophet, who says, “Keep your tongue from evil, and let your lips not speak deceit. Do not let your tongue utter an evil expression.” (Incomplete Work on Matthew, Homily 9) Manlio Simonetti, editor, Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, New Testament Ia, (Downers Grove IL: Inter Varsity Press, 2001), 88

COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Celebrant

Let us pray. Lord God of the nations, thou hast revealed thy will to all people and promised us thy saving help. May we hear and do what thou dost command, that the darkness may be overcome by the power of thy light; through thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who livest and reignest with thee and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the First Book of Kings. So Ahab sent to all the Israelites, and assembled the prophets at Mount Carmel. Elijah then came near to all the people, and said, "How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him." The people did not answer him a word. Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come closer to me"; and all the people came closer to him. First he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down; Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, "Israel shall be your name"; with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. Then he made a trench around the altar, large enough to contain two measures of seed. Next he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, "Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood." Then he said, "Do it a second time"; and they did it a second time. Again he said, "Do it a third time"; and they did it a third time, so that the water ran all

around the altar, and filled the trench also with water. At the time of the offering of the oblation, the prophet Elijah came near and said, "O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your bidding. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, so that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back." Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and even licked up the water that was in the trench. When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, "The Lord indeed is God; the Lord indeed is God." 1 Kings 18:20-21 (22-29), 30-39

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians. Paul an apostle - sent neither by human commission nor from human authorities, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead - and all the members of God's family who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to set us free from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel窶馬ot that there is another gospel, but there are some who are confusing you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should HIGH MASS | 9

proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed! As we have said before, so now I repeat, if anyone proclaims to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let that one be accursed! Am I now seeking human approval, or God's approval? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still pleasing people, I would not be a servant of Christ. For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. Galatians 1:1-12

THE HOLY GOSPEL

10 | HIGH MASS

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy of having you do this for him, for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us." And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and the slave does it." When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health. Luke 7:1-10

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. THE MOTHERS’ UNION EDWARDIAN STRAWBERRY TEA Sunday June 23rd - noon to 2pm -local strawberries -home-made sponge cake -real whipped cream -fancy sandwiches -live music Back by popular demand is the Mothers’ Union Edwardian Strawberry Tea to be held Sunday, June 23, after High Mass, in the Parish Hall. It will be replacing the normal coffee hour on that Sunday. Again we will be offering home-made sandwiches, strawberry shortcake with freshly picked BC strawberries and whipping cream, and tea and coffee. There will be musical entertainment and recitations. It is hoped that parishioners will get into the spirit of Edwardian England by wearing a fancy hat or fascinator for the women; bowtie, cravat, waistcoat and/or boater for the men. If you have holiday plans for that weekend and know you will be away, but would like to purchase a ticket for someone who cannot afford the $10 charge, this would be most appreciated. Last year we were able to give away approximately 10 tickets. Children under 8 are free. The proceeds will be donated to the MU Northern Clergy Families’ Fund, our primary national fundraiser. Tickets are available from members of the Mothers’ Union.

The camera tripod needs to be set in place before the sermon begins, and there are three ‘X’s’ on the floor marking the spot to make it easy. After the sermon the camera needs to be put away. It is a one-person job, but we would like to train several people to ensure that someone is always available. Starting in September, we would also like to record Formation Sessions. Please contact the office ASAP for more information. This is an excellent opportunity for parishioners who are looking for experience and references for their resume.

On June 17th at 7:30am we will have fifteen yards of screened compost delivered. Part of it will be bagged up and sold and most of it will be spread into the gardens at St. Luke’s, St. James’ Place and in the Lady Garden. The work will be done by the YouthWorks students who are renting the Crypt, along with Master Gardener volunteers. If you are able to loan us a wheelbarrow or some traffic safety cones, please let us know. We also need some volunteers to bag up the compost between 7:30am and 9:00am, before the YouthWorks teens are available, because the sidewalk will need to be cleared quickly. Harvest Power is donating the compost, but we need to pay the trucking fees. We would also like to purchase some new plants, shrubs, planters and a bench for the Chapel Walkway. If you would like to volunteer in the garden with the Master Gardeners, please leave a message at the office. Join us for some fresh air, exercise, good company, and the opportunity to learn more about gardening. We are also accepting monetary donations to the gardens. Check out the new St. Francis statue in the Chapel Walkway Garden, donated by a St. Luke’s resident. Please tell your friends and neighbours about the compost sale. We’ll have a lot of bags to sell!
