Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES  To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;  To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;  To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;  To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 9:45 AM Rosary Prayers, Lady Chapel 10:30 AM High Mass, Church 12:00 PM Coffee Hour, Parish Hall 4:00 PM Confirmation, Christ Church Cathedral 4:00 PM Evensong & Benediction with Oculus Choir, Church ______________________________________________________________________

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Confirmation is the ceremonial completion of baptism. It is administered by the bishop alone, as chief pastor of the Church, in order that the admission of the baptized to the privileges of the House of God may be properly attested. It does not appear that any special gift, in addition to the gift of the new life, is conveyed by this means; the grace of confirmation is rather a strengthening of that life. The prayers used in the administration of the sacrament are our best guide to its meaning. They speak of a daily increase in the manifold gifts of grace that began with regeneration and the forgiveness of sins. These manifold gifts are evidently the powers of the new life regarded in their various manifestations, and are summarized in the seven-fold endowment of the Spirit—wisdom and understanding, counsel and strength, knowledge, godliness, and the holy fear. These are representative activities of eternal life; the bishop, confirming the baptized, prays that he may continue in the life begun, and may daily increase in the power bestowed upon him by the Holy Ghost. The grace of confirmation, therefore, is the continuance and increase of the grace of baptism. T. A. Lacy, The Mysteries of Grace, London, 1908, pp. 29-30

Thomas Alexander Lacy, a Canon of Worcester Cathedral from 1918, was a strong Anglo-Catholic advocate of unity between Anglicans and Roman Catholics. He took an active part in pressing the Anglican case during the Papal Commission which examined (and condemned) Anglican orders in 1896.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Genesis. The child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. So she said to Abraham, "Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac." The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. But God said to Abraham, "Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring." So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. When the water in the skin was gone, she cast

the child under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, "Do not let me look on the death of the child." And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, "What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him." Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink. God was with the boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert with the bow. He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt. Genesis 21:8-21

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:1B-11

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Jesus said, "A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one's foes will be members of one's own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it." Matthew 10:24-39

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES On Sunday (June 22) Christians from around our Diocese will gather at our Cathedral to be confirmed. Five parishioners of St. James’ will be confirmed and one will be formally “received” into the Anglican Communion. This is an occasion of joy as we witness the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of our fellow pilgrims. The essential rite of confirmation is the laying on of hands by the bishop accompanied by these words: “Strengthen, O Lord, your servant N with your Holy Spirit; empower him/her for your service; and sustain him/her all the days of his/her life. Amen.” The fullest expression of this rite is when the forehead is anointed with the oil of chrism prior to these words – as happens in many Anglican dioceses. Did you know that in the Churches of the East confirmation, or “chrismation” as it is known, is administered immediately after baptism. There is no separation of baptism and confirmation / chrismation as there is in the West. In the words of contemporary orthodox writer: “After baptism, then, the initiate stands in the church in white robes with bare feet. The gateways of the human senses are marked with chrism in the form of

the cross: forehead, eye, nostrils, lips, ears, breast, hands back and front, and the feet. At each of the several anointings the priest says: “The seal of the Holy Spirit’.” What is the sacrament of confirmation as we practice it in the West? “Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop.” (Book of Common Prayer, 1979, The Episcopal Church) The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1319) offers us this description: “A candidate for Confirmation who has attained the age of reason must profess the faith, be in the state of grace, have the intention of receiving the sacrament, and be prepared to assume the role of disciple and witness to Christ, both within the ecclesial community and in temporal affairs.” Emma, Jenny, Lynn, Margaret, Yukiko and Jason have each chosen to be strengthened through the work of the Holy Spirit at this time. Please pray for them and be faithful companions to them in the pilgrim way of Jesus Christ.

DIDO’S “DID YOU KNOW?” 1315 "Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit" (Acts 8:14-17). 1316 Confirmation perfects Baptismal grace; it is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds.

1317 Confirmation, like Baptism, imprints a spiritual mark or indelible character on the Christian's soul; for this reason one can receive this sacrament only once in one's life. 1318 In the East this sacrament is administered immediately after Baptism and is followed by participation in the Eucharist; this tradition highlights the unity of the three sacraments of Christian initiation. In the Latin Church this sacrament is administered when the age of reason has been reached, and its celebration is ordinarily reserved to the bishop, thus signifying that this sacrament strengthens the ecclesial bond. 1319 A candidate for Confirmation who has attained the age of reason must profess the faith, be in the state of grace, have the intention of receiving the sacrament, and be prepared to assume the role of disciple and witness to Christ, both within the ecclesial community and in temporal affairs. 1320 The essential rite of Confirmation is anointing the forehead of the baptized with sacred chrism (in the East other sense-organs as well), together with the laying on of the minister's hand and the words: "Accipe signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti" (Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.) in the Roman Rite, or "The seal of the gift that is the Holy Spirit" in the Byzantine rite. 1321 When Confirmation is celebrated separately from Baptism, its connection with Baptism is expressed, among other ways, by the renewal of baptismal promises. the celebration of Confirmation during the Eucharist helps underline the unity of the sacraments of Christian initiation.

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK Naturally it is important to prepare those being confirmed well, leading them towards a personal commitment to faith in Christ and reawakening in them a sense of belonging to the Church. Confirmation, like every Sacrament, is not the work of men but of God, who cares for our lives in such a manner as to mold us in the image of his Son, to make us capable of loving like him. COMMEMORATION St. Etheldreda Abbess of Ely, c.678 June 23

Etheldreda was the third daughter of the Christian King Anna of East Anglia and his wife Saewara. In 652 AD she was married against her will to Tondbert, King of South Gyrwe, which was an East Anglian sub-kingdom in the Fens. Tondbert gave his wife an estate called Elge (now Ely) as part of their marriage settlement and allowed Etheldreda to live as a nun during the three years of their marriage. In 654 her father King Anna was defeated and killed by Penda of Mercia. After the death of Tondbert in 655, Etheldreda settled on the estate at Ely. However, in 660 she married Egfrith who was the second son of Oswiu, King of Northumbria. He was around 14 years old and little more than a child, so the most likely reason for the marriage was to secure an alliance for the house of the Uffingas with the Kingdom of Northumbria against the Mercians. By the time Egfrith ascended to the throne of Northumbria at the age of twenty four in 670, he had begun to pressure Etheldreda into consummating the marriage. He entreated her friend and adviser Saint Wilfred to use his influence on Etheldreda and, while Wilfred feigned to favour the King’s view of the matter, he actively encouraged the Queen to persist in her celibate life and advised her to ask permission to leave the court and become a nun. Eventually Etheldreda made her decision and fled to Coldingham. Saint Aebba the Elder, Egfrith’s aunt, was the abbess and sympathised with Etheldreda, but she advised her to leave Coldingham in the disguise of a beggar, since resistance would be impossible should Egfrith insist on reclaiming her. Etheldreda, accompanied by two nuns of Coldingham, Sewenna and Sewara, decided to go back to her own lands at Ely. After her arrival in her own lands in Ely, Etheldreda built a large double monastery in 673. Wilfred made her abbess and obtained special privileges for her from the Pope. Etheldreda ruled over her monastery for seven years, wearing only rough woollen clothing, and denying herself luxuries…. Her sister Saint Sexburga, Queen of Kent, left her own foundation of Minster-in-Sheppey and put herself under the rule of Etheldreda. After her death in 679 she succeeded [Etheldreda] as abbess. www.ancientworlds.net/aw/Article/1147762. 30 | THE THURIBLE

COMMEMORATION St. Cyril Bishop of Alexandria and Teacher of the Faith, 444 June 27

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Cyril received an excellent religious and humanistic education in one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities of its day, but his intellectual arrogance and stubbornness caused him difficulties. Cyril fought with almost everyone and spent much of his later life quarreling with various heretics. To the modern reader, such fierce disputes appear senseless, and rational people willing to seek common cause over a cup of tea could have settled many, but that was not the atmosphere of fourth-century Alexandria. Emerging Christianity was one of several competing religious and philosophical systems, and within Christianity there were divergent doctrinal tendencies, each with strong advocates. What would later become orthodoxy was then being hammered out on the anvil of sharp discourse among church leaders. One of Cyril’s first disputes was with the Nestorians, [a] Christian group with distinctive theological views about the nature of Christ. Nestorians argued [that] Christ was two separate persons, one human, the other divine. Orthodox Christians believed Jesus Christ was both fully human and fully divine. The early church often used the Greek word Theotokos, “God-bearer,” for Mary, the mother of God. The Nestorians rejected this term, arguing that God could not have been born from a human being, and preferred the term Christokos, “Christ-bearer,” which Nestorius thought was a clearer expression of the dual nature of Christ…. A council denounced his handling of the Nestorian question and deposed him as bishop, placing him under guard for three months. The pope intervened, declaring his support for Cyril, who emerged as a local hero in Alexandria. Nestorius, his rival and powerful patriarch of Constantinople, retired to a monastery, and Cyril, fueled by his earlier experiences, went on to write extensively about the nature of Christ. He was a prolific writer, and from his pen poured forth a stream of biblical commentaries, letters, sermons, and theological discourses, for which he was eventually named a doctor of the church. www.dacb.org/stories/egypt/cyril_alexandria.html.
