Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection “How many times do we see evangelization as involving any number of strategies, tactics, maneuvers, techniques, as if we could convert people on the basis of our own arguments?”… “the Lord says to us quite clearly: in the mentality of the Gospel, you do not convince people with arguments, strategies or tactics. You convince them by learning how to welcome them.”… When Jesus commissions the disciples, he gives them very clear instructions to “take nothing for the journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money,” and “when you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place.” All of these are challenges the Pope said could seem unrealistic, exaggerated and even “absurd,” however Jesus was very clear. Out of all the words that stand out in Jesus’ command, such as bread, money, staff, sandals or tunic, one that can easily go unnoticed, and which sits at the heart of Christian spirituality, is to “welcome,” he said. “Jesus as the good master, the good teacher, sends them out to be welcomed, to experience hospitality,” Francis said. Rather than going out as men with influence, dominance or officials with rules, the disciples are being shown by Jesus that “the Christian journey is about changing hearts.” “It is about learning to live differently, under a different law, with different rules. It is about turning from the path of selfishness, conflict, division and superiority, and taking instead the path of life, generosity and love.” “The Church is the home of hospitality,” he said, explaining that she is a mother who knows how to welcome and accept with an open heart, particularly those who are in greatest need. “How much good we can do, if only we try to speak the language of hospitality, of welcome! How much pain can be soothed, how much despair can be allayed in a place where we feel at home! Welcoming the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, the prisoner, the leper and the paralytic.” The Catholic News Agency -- Accessed 7th June 2018 https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/want-to-preach-the-gospel-effectively-be-welcoming -pope-says-23225

Entrance Rite PRELUDE
At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand.
HYMN 256 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — On This Day, the First of Days On this day, the first of days, God the Father's Name we praise, who, creation's Lord and spring, did the world from darkness bring. On this day his only Son over death his triumph won; on this day the Spirit came with his gifts of living flame. On this day his people raise one pure sacrifice of praise, and, with all the saints above, tell of Christ’s redeeming love. Praise, O God, to thee be given, praise on earth and praise in heaven, praise to thy eternal Son, who this day our victory won.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Genesis. They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the Lord God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ The Lord God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.’ Genesis 3:8-15

Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? For there is forgiveness with you; therefore you shall be feared. Antiphon

I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. my soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. Antiphon O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy; With him there is plenteous redemption, and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins. Antiphon Psalm 130
EPISTLE READING Reader
A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—‘I believed, and so I spoke’—we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 4:13 - 5:1

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon All Deacon All
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. The crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain Jesus, for people were saying, "He has gone out of his mind." And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons." And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin" - for they had said, "He has an unclean spirit." Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you." And he replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking at those who sat around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY This week the Radical Inclusion event has taken up much of my time. It has been an energetic kind of busy, and I am writing to you with just 5 hours to go until the event starts. This event is the culmination of months of work by the Communications Team led by the late Pat McSherry and myself that came together last year to write a grant. Since receiving this Parish Development Grant, we have been working on how we reach people beyond our congregation, so that they will know that St. James’ Church is here and have the opportunity to meet Christ in our worship and ministry. The event will be attended by people from our congregation, other faith denominations, as well as atheists and agnostics. There are people who identify as low income, single moms, people with developmental and physical disabilities, people in early recovery from addiction, people doing community leadership on mental health, people who are unemployed, students...the list goes on.
What a gift it is to have a space that we can welcome people into. Inclusion was a big issue in the early church, with Peter an apostle to the Jews and Paul to the gentiles. It seems that inclusion, who’s in and who’s out, continues to be an issue today. I am constantly surprised by the new labels we create for one another, and the ways we as humans find to separate ourselves from each other. Separation and exclusion is counter to the gospel. The good news is for all people and I am grateful to be in ministry here with you, where we are able to have conversations where we might disagree, but still find a way forward, as God’s people united in Christ. My hope for us is that by being open to newcomers and people attending events here, in greeting people at services and during Open Church on Wednesdays, we will continue to grow and be a brighter beacon of God’s light in our neighbourhood.

NEXT SUNDAY Sunday, June 17 - Aboriginal Prayer Sunday FINANCIAL UPDATE In world finance, the year so far has seen volatile periods on the stock exchange; inflation, slowly climbing interest rates, and recent trade disputes, remind us the financial realm is everchanging and requires careful attention. The management of our endowment, we're assured by Ross Turnbull at Odlum Brown, is approached in such a way as to minimize the effects of financial storms, focussed as it is on long-term sustainability and balance. To date, all appears well with our investments. The finances of the Parish are in good order, as well. Recent healthy rental revenue offsets, to a degree, the expense of some rather necessary building repairs. Other areas are more or less within the budget so far. We greatly appreciate the support of our parishioners, through their regular giving, and that of friends of St. James whose funding of projects and initiatives both sustain us and aid in our growth. Reading the numbers of our monthly financial reports, one forms an idea of the many people at work behind the scenes. Attached to line items there are stories of people working together, committed to carrying out the many facets of the ministry and mission of St. James; we're grateful for their labours, and for God's help and guidance in all we do.
