As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will with God’s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself? I will with God’s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will with God’s help. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me; just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.” Matthew 25:40, 45b

HYMN 256 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — On This Day, the First of Days On this day, the first of days, God the Father's Name we praise, who, creation's Lord and spring, did the world from darkness bring. On this day his only Son over death his triumph won; on this day the Spirit came with his gifts of living flame.
On this day his people raise one pure sacrifice of praise, and, with all the saints above, tell of Christ’s redeeming love. Praise, O God, to thee be given, praise on earth and praise in heaven, praise to thy eternal Son, who this day our victory won.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the First Book of Kings. Then the Lord said to Elijah ‘Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. So he set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was ploughing. There were twelve yoke of oxen ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, ‘Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.’ Then Elijah said to him, ‘Go back again; for what have I done to you?’ He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his servant. 1 Kings 19:15-16, 19-21

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord, my good above all other.” All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, upon those who are noble among the people. But those who run after other gods shall have their troubles multiplied. Their libations of blood I will not offer, nor take the names of their gods upon my lips. Antiphon

O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; it is you who uphold my lot. My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; indeed, I have a goodly heritage. I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand I shall not fall. Antiphon My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope. For you will not abandon me to the grave, nor let your holy one see the Pit. You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Antiphon Psalm 16
SECOND READING Reader
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians.
For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself." If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Galatians 5:1, 13-25

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon Allll Deacon Allll
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord.
When the days drew near for Jesus to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" But he turned and rebuked them. Then they went on to another village. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." To another he said, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." Another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home." Jesus said to him, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God." Luke 9:51-62

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim. For lo! Between our sins and their reward we set the passion of thy Son our Lord. And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy's breast; O do thine utmost for their souls' true weal; from tainting mischief keep them pure and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so awesome and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Do you remember back in January a group of us from the Thursday night Bible Study went and spent the evening volunteering at the Greater Vancouver Food Bank instead of at the church? While there, we learned that the summer is the toughest time of year for the food bank as they receive fewer donations. Therefore we are doing a food drive to help them out! Our food drive will run from July 1st to August 12th 2019. What better way to kick off Canada Day this coming Monday than to begin thinking about what you can give to Canadians in Vancouver who use the food bank to help feed their families? Fr. Kevin and I have committed to filling a box each to kick start the drive. As a community we are going to try and fill 25 boxes, which will be stacked in the baptistry and collected by the Greater Vancouver Food bank on August 14th during Open Church. This is a great way for us to partner with an organization which is currently located inside our parish boundaries and helps over 27,500 people a week in our
city — 25% of these are children, 35% are seniors. Please bring non-perishable donations to the church when you attend Mass or during Open Church Hours 10 am-2 pm on Mondays & Wednesdays. There will be a box in the Narthex for you to leave your offering. Want to commit to filling a 12” x 15” x 10” box? You can collect one in July from the baptistry and return it by August long weekend! You could take one to work, or ask friends and family to contribute. Here is a list of the much needed items: canned fish, or canned turkey, canned black beans, chickpeas, and kidney beans, dried lentils, nuts or seeds (packaged not bulk), whole wheat pasta & whole grain rice, canned fruit & vegetables, powdered skimmed milk, and hearty stews with 10g or more protein.

OPEN CHURCH A reminder that Open Church is closed this holiday Monday, and on Wednesday as well. Thanks. GENERAL SYNOD JULY 10-17 Please pray for the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada, which will be meeting here in Vancouver from July 10. Its business will include the election of a new Primate, self-governance of Indigenous Anglicans within the Anglican Church of Canada, and receiving a “Word to the Church,” which we looked at Parish Council, together with consideration of an amendment to the Marriage Canon relating to same-sex marriage. On Sunday July 14 we shall be hosting five members of the General Synod at Solemn Mass, among them the Rt Revd Bruce Myers, Bishop of Quebec, who will be the celebrant. At 12:30 there will be a presentation of the Street Outreach Video. The following prayer is commended for use in preparation for the Synod: God of our ancestors, God of our future, who was and is and is to come, you have named us in baptism, and called us into friendship with you and one another. In this General Synod, give all participants grace to listen well, to speak with respect, to deliberate with wisdom, and to honour this gathering of your beloved Church; through Jesus Christ, before whose name we bow in adoration and praise, now and for ever. Amen.
HONOURING JANIS In July 2018 the St. James’ Choir lost Janis Waller, a faithful member of long standing. PJ Janson, our Assistant Organist, has written a splendid Missa brevis in Janis’ memory. The choir are delighted to honour the memory of Janis by premiering this Mass setting at the Solemn Mass on July 14, the Sunday nearest Janis’ passing. OUTREACH COMMITTEE Earlier this year a grant of $1,500 was made to St. Hilda’s Church, Sechelt’s “Spread the Light” Capital Campaign, to fund urgent restoration work. Of the $1,300,000 required, $854,000 have been raised. The following letter of thanks has been received: Dear Brothers and Sisters of St. James’, Thank you so much for your generous grant to our Restoration Fund. We are delighted to welcome the community back into our Church building, and very grateful for your support for our ministry in Sechelt. God’s blessing be on you all. The Lord is Risen, Alleluia! for St. Hilda’s Restoration Committee Please remember in your prayers Fr. Clarence Li, former assistant priest at St. James’, as he leaves St. Hilda’s to take up the position of Executive Director of the Sunshine Coast Association for Community Living in July.
