Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex).

As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection God of our ancestors, God of our future, who was and is and is to come, you have named us in baptism, and called us into friendship with you and one another. In this General Synod, give all participants grace to listen well, to speak with respect, to deliberate with wisdom, and to honour this gathering of your beloved Church; through Jesus Christ, before whose name we bow in adoration and praise, now and for ever. Amen.

HYMN 5 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Christ Whose Glory Fills the Skies Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true, the only light, Sun of Righteousness, arise! Triumph o'er the shades of night: Dayspring from on high, be near; Daystar, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee; joyless is the day’s return till thy mercy’s beams I see, till they inward light impart, glad my eyes and warm my heart. Visit then this soul of mine, pierce the gloom of sin and grief; fill me, Radiancy divine, scatter all my unbelief; more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her; rejoice with her in joy, all you who mourn over her—that you may nurse and be satisfied from her consoling breast; that you may drink deeply with delight from her glorious bosom. For thus says the Lord: I will extend prosperity to her like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall nurse and be carried on her arm, and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice; your bodies shall flourish like the grass; and it shall be known that the hand of the Lord is with his servants, and his indignation is against his enemies. Isaiah 66:10-14

Reader All

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Sing the glory of his name; sing the glory of his praise. Say to God, ”How awesome are your deeds! because of your great strength your enemies cringe before you. All the earth bows down before you, sings to you, sings out your name” Antiphon Come now and see the works of God, how wonderful he is in his doing toward all people. He turned the sea into dry land, so that they went through the water on foot, and there we rejoiced in him. In his might he rules for ever; his eyes keep watch over the nations; let no rebel rise up against him. Antiphon Bless our God, you peoples; make the voice of his praise to be heard; Who holds our souls in life, and will not allow our feet to slip. Antiphon Psalm 66:1-8 SOLEMN MASS | 9

SECOND READING Reader

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians. Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. Galatians 6:7-16

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon Allll Deacon Allll

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!' And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.' Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me." The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!" He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." Luke 10:1-11, 16-20

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. 3 Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in Thee I find; raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is Thy Name, I am all unrighteousness! Vile and full of sin I am, Thou art full of truth and grace.

2 Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on Thee; leave, ah, leave me not alone, still support and comfort me; all my trust on Thee is stayed, all my help from Thee I bring; cover my defenceless head with the shadow of Thy wing.

4 Plenteous grace with Thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound, make and keep me pure within; Thou of life the Fountain art, freely let me take of Thee, spring Thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Greetings friends, thank you for inquiries about the food drive collection to benefit the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and the boxes. You will find them in the baptistery and a box in the narthex for individual donations this Sunday. The coming week will be a busy one for our diocese as the General Synod approaches and we prepare to host people from across Canada. There will be visitors at Solemn Mass at St. James’ on Sunday 14th, and we will be showing the video about the Street Outreach ministry afterwards. The 42nd General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada will be held from July 10-16, 2019 at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia in the Diocese of New Westminster. The theme of the synod is “I Have Called You By Name” (Isaiah 43:1). There will be the election of a new Primate, with five candidates nominated. As you know the two major things up for discussion for this Synod are the Motion for Second Reading of Amendment to Canon XXI (On Marriage in the

Church) and the Amendments to Canon XXII (National Indigenous Ministry). So what does all this mean? Well, we’ve got a lot to pray about. We have differing views about how these votes should go and who should be elected. One of the things I love about the Anglican Church is that there is room for discussion and room for all people. That also means that there is room to value and respect people who are hurting and who feel excluded, regardless of who “wins.” This week let’s pray that the Spirit of God, the Spirit of truth and wisdom will be upon all the delegates, staff and volunteers, that once the eve of July 16th comes, unity and consolation will be present so we can move forward together as the Church of Christ, not as political opponents, or “winners” and “losers.”
