A Reflection Some went down to the sea in ships and plied their trade in deep waters; They beheld the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep. Then he spoke, and a stormy wind arose, which tossed high the waves of the sea. They mounted up to the heavens and fell back to the depths; their hearts melted because of their peril. They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper and quieted the waves of the sea. Then were they glad because of the calm, and he brought them to the harbour they were bound for. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercy and the wonders he does for his children. Let them exalt him in the congregation of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. Entrance Rite PRELUDE

At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 205 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — The Day of Resurrection The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; the passover of gladness, the passover of God. From death to life eternal, from earth unto the sky, our Christ hath brought us over, with hymns of victory. Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection light; and listening to his accents, may hear, so calm and plain, his own "All hail!" and, hearing, may raise the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful! Let earth the song begin! the round world keep high triumph, and all that is therein! Let all things seen and unseen their notes in gladness blend, for Christ the Lord hath risen, our joy that hath no end. 6 | SOLEMN MASS

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Isaiah. But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, ‘Give them up’, and to the south, ‘Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth— everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.’ Isaiah 43:1-7

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting-places and are acquainted with all my ways. Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, but you, O Lord, know it altogether. Antiphon You press upon me behind and before and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain to it. Antiphon Where can I go then from your Spirit? where can I flee from your presence? If I climb up to heaven, you are there; if I make the grave my bed, you are there also. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there your hand will lead me and your right hand hold me fast. Antiphon Psalm 139:1-10

SECOND READING Reader

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:16-20

ALLELUIA

A cantor begins the Alleluia; all repeat it thereafter.

Alleluia. Christ is risen, and hath showed light unto us: whom he hath redeemed with his most precious blood. Alleluia. I have chosen you out of the world: that ye should go and bring fruit, and that your fruit should remain. Alleluia. Surrexit Christus (Mode V)

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon Allll Deacon Allll

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things John 20:1-18

Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 525 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — The Church’s One Foundation The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ our Lord; we are his new creation by water and the word: from heav'n he came and sought us to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought us, and for our life he died. Elect from ev'ry nation, yet one o'er all the earth, our charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth; one glorious name we hallow, partake one holy food, and to one hope we follow, with ev'ry grace endued.

Though with dismay and wonder we see the church oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed: yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, "How long?" And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 'Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of our war, we wait the consummation of peace forevermore; till with the vision glorious our longing eyes are blessed, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. Yet we on earth have union with the God the Three-in-One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee.

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our misusings of thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim. For lo! Between our sins and their reward we set the passion of thy Son our Lord. And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal: O fold them closer to thy mercy's breast; O do thine utmost for their souls' true weal; from tainting mischief keep them pure and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. And so we come: O draw us to thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still; and by this food, so awesome and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill. In thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with thee.

Missa Brevis No 1 — PJ Janson Written in August, 2018 by PJ Janson, St James’ Assistant Organist, today's Mass setting bears the dedication 'In memory of Janis Waller' — a faithful member of long standing of St James' SOLEMN MASS Choir. Janis was an intrepid St James’ parishioner for decades; she was often the first to see a need and respond accordingly. Missa brevis No 1 is a simple and mostly syllabic setting which ensures the intelligibility of the Mass text, while the effect is to aid contemplation and devotion. The Kyrie has a sense of gravitas and harkens to the past, as its melody embraces the melodic constraints as codified by the Benedictine monk Guido de Arezzo ( ca 991 – 1033 ) and its harmonies have characteristics of the mediæval Dorian mode. The Sanctus commences with high voices singing extended harmonies, commonly-used in choral music of today, its æthereal sound musically representing the word ‘holy.’ The Benedictus is intoned by the lower voices and as altos & sopranos join, the attentive listener will recognise a fleeting reference to the theme of Elgar's Enigma Variation ‘Nimrod.' An alto solo begins the Agnus Dei, and its melody recalls the modal character of the Kyrie. A greater urgency is evident in the second statement of the Agnus Dei as the harmonies become more intense. The sopranos commence the third line of the Agnus Dei in an echo-like manner and are joined by the altos on the phrase qui tollis peccata mundi ('who takes away the sin of the world'). And just then, on the word mundi, almost seamlessly, but surprisingly, the harmonies change — as if for a moment we get a glimpse of another world. The final words of the Agnus Dei, donna nobis pacem, are sung thrice, and as the music comes to a conclusion it exudes a sense of peace, bringing to remembrance the promise of John 14:27. The Choir continue to miss Janis since her passing in July of 2018, and wish to dedicate today’s rendition of Missa brevis No 1 to the glory of God and the memory of Janis Waller, our dear colleague and friend.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY As many of you know, I’m privileged to have returned recently from an Alaskan cruise. We were able to marvel at the wonders of the deep, and the majesty of the creation: land and seascape, marine, animal and bird wildlife. It was a truly awesome experience. The second Sunday in July is often observed as Sea Sunday, so on Thursday evening this week I was glad to join the Mission to Seafarers on the Magic Hornblower to sail around Burrard Inlet, Vancouver Harbour. Passing close by the various terminals on the south and north shores, we were reminded of the busy-ness of the port, the largest in Canada, and the third largest in North America. The port has annually over 3,100 foreign vessel calls, a cargo tonnage of 147 million tonnes, container volume of 3.4 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit, twenty feet being a container-length), cargo value of over $240 billion; over 240 cruise sailings and 900,000 cruise passengers. Living day by day with the port on our doorstep, it is easy to forget the enormous scale of its operation, and its significance for the sustenance of

not only our city and province, but the whole country and beyond. We were reminded too of the demanding realities of life at sea – and in port – for seafarers: often at the mercy of the elements, months away from home and family (a crew member on our cruise-ship was telling me how much he was longing to see his 3 year-old son, and how he was growing), living at very close quarters with a small number of colleagues. The Mission to Seafarers, along with other like-minded charities, offers here in Vancouver and ports across the world a place of warmth, welcome and service to seafarers, so often alone in strange places far from home. Visit flyingangel.ca to find out more about the Mission’s work here on our doorstep. “Some went down to the sea in ships and plied their trade in deep waters; … They beheld the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep… Then were they glad because the Lord brought them to the harbour they were bound for.” (From Psalm 107 – see Reflection.)
