DAILY MASS

Please take this booklet away with you to aid in your own reflection, prayers, and for your information.

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Brother, Sister, you want to seek God with all your life, and love Him with all your heart. But you would be wrong if you thought you could reach Him. Your arms are too short, your eyes are too dim, your heart and your understanding too small. To seek God means first of all to let yourself by found by Him. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is the God of Jesus Christ. He is your God, not because He is yours but because you are His. To choose God is to realize that you are known and loved in a way surpassing anything men can imagine, loved before anyone had thought of you or spoken your name. To choose God means giving yourself up to Him in faith. Let your life be built on this faith as on an invisible foundation. Let yourself be carried by this faith like a child in its mother’s womb. And so, don’t talk too much about God but live in the certainty that He has written your name on the palm of His hand. Live your human task in the liberating certainty that nothing in the world can separate you from God’s love for you.

COMMEMORATION St. Benedict of Nursia Abbot, Patron of Europe, c.540 July 11 Today we honour Benedict, an abbot in sixth-century Italy and the author of an influential Rule for communities of monks and nuns. In his youth Benedict abandoned society and for many years dwelt all alone in a cave in order to learn complete obedience to the will of Christ. Word of his holy life spread throughout Italy, and soon he was surrounded by several thousand disciples, whom he formed into a single community. He eventually moved to Monte Cassino, where he gathered a second community of monks. There he died around the year 547. Shortly before his death Benedict drew up a Rule for the continuing nurture of his community. This Rule teaches monks two chief duties — obedience to their abbot and the work of prayer. Obedience is not meant to be an end in itself; it is supposed to foster stability in spiritual growth, so that each monk might look beyond his own needs and support his brothers in attaining the common goal of perfect conformity to Christ. This communal discipline finds its chief expression through the daily offices, which Benedict called “the work of God.” Seven times a day the whole community gathers to pray the Psalms, hear Scripture, and offer intercession for the needs of the Church and the world. As with the precept of obedience, “the work of God” is meant to be a work of love in Jesus Christ. Several centuries after Benedict’s death, his Rule was adopted by other monastic communities throughout Europe and became the foundation for the Order of St. Benedict, which flourishes in the Roman Catholic and Anglican Communions to this day. COMMEMORATION

NOTES

Jan Hus Prophetic Witness and Martyr, 1415 July 6 Jan Hus was a Czech priest who was unjustly condemned and executed in 1415 because he advocated reforms in the life and doctrine of the Church. He grew up when the Czech people were being moved by an extraordinary revival in their practice of the Eucharist. At that time most Christians did not dare to receive the sacrament of Christ’s body more than three times a year. The Czechs broke with this custom and joined in daily celebrations where everyone, from the youngest infants to the oldest widows, received communion. This common experience of the Eucharist acted as leaven in the life of their nation and raised them to a new sense of justice in their dealings with one another — and in what they expected from their German rulers. Hus became the best-known theologian of this movement after 1402, when he was appointed to the Bethlehem Chapel in Prague. His preaching and genuine goodness of character made him beloved among all classes of the Czech nation. But his outspoken demands for reform of the Church — and his challenge of those doctrines which were used to justify ecclesiastical abuses — made him the target of intrigues on the part of German churchmen in Prague. He was summoned to the council of Constance in 1415, where the authorities reneged on their promise of immunity and safe conduct and had him tried on a fraudulent charge of heresy. He was convicted without a hearing and burned at the stake on July 6th of that year. Protestants have always regarded Hus as a precursor of their own movement, because he was killed for advocating the reformation of doctrine as well as of institutional abuses. In recent times, Roman Catholic scholars have also acknowledged that he was unjustly condemned and recognized that he was a teacher of great courage and true reforming instincts. for the restoration and lighting of the memorial garden would be very helpful. All of the lights in the nave have now been replaced with LED lighting. All of the painting, church, hall and rectory, is expected to be complete by the end of August. As always, the Wardens are available to answer any questions. Reece Wrightman, People’s Warden KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. God answers prayer in the way that is best for us From the second reading: Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:8-9a (NIV) Would you like a cookie? I just love cookies! When you ask your mom if you can have a cookie, do you always get the same answer? Probably not. Sometimes the answer may be, "yes" and sometimes it may be "no." If you ask for a cookie and it is almost time to eat dinner, the answer might be, "not right now, it would spoil your dinner." You see, your mom wants what is best for you and when you ask for something, "yes" might not always be the answer that is best for you.

most faithful servants sometimes got a "no" in answer to their prayers. The apostle Paul wrote about a time when God answered "no" to his prayer. In a letter he wrote to his friends in the church at Corinth, Paul told them that had a physical problem which he described as a "thorn in his flesh." We don't know exactly what it was because he didn't say, but it was something that Paul wanted God to take away. Paul said that he begged God, not once, not twice, but three times to take away this "thorn in the flesh," but God said, "No, my grace is all you need."

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

Why would God say, "No" to Paul's request? Paul was convinced that it was to help him to be humble and to put his trust in Jesus rather than in his own strength. If he had been trusting in his own strength, he might not have been able to do nearly as much as he could when he was trusting in Jesus. "I am glad to boast that I am weak," said Paul, "so that the power of Christ may work through me." God wants us to pray. He wants us to ask him for everything that we need, but we must remember that what we want may not always be what we need. God loves us and wants what is best for us. That is why when we pray and ask for something, the answer is sometimes "no." Dear Father, we know that you love your children and want what is best for them. Help us to remember that when we ask for something and the answer is, "No." Amen.

Did you know that same thing is true when we pray to God? Sometimes we ask God for something and He answers, "Yes" right away. Other times he may say, "No." There are also times when we ask God for something, and he says, "Not right now." The reason God doesn't always say, "yes" is that He wants what is best for his children -- and what we are asking for may not be what is best for us. You may be surprised to learn that even some of God's HIGH MASS | 7 20 | THE THURIBLE

evangelism, stewardship and service. Much of our work is devoted to “service” as we reach out to those who need our help. The Outreach Committee (OC) is not the only agent of outreach at St. James’. As evidenced at our last Outreach Sunday, 17 different outreach initiatives were represented by various guilds and groups within our congregation. The OC’s mandate is solely outreach but we are keen to collaborate with guilds and groups to accomplish the aim to encourage the work and witness of our church in the widest sense.

Let us pray. Almighty God, thy Son Jesus Christ hath taught us that what we do for the least of thy children we do also for him. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Second Book of Samuel. Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, "Look, we are your bone and flesh. For some time, while Saul was king over us, it was you who led out Israel and brought it in. The Lord said to you: It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel." So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years. David occupied the stronghold, and named it the city of David. David built the city all around from the Millo inward. And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him. 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10

8 | HIGH MASS

This year, we were activated by a donation of $5000.00 from John Conway to continue this work. Over the years, funds have been allocated to local, national and international initiatives and requests. One project that stands out was the funding of a boat and motor for the Melanesian Brothers to minister to the various villages in the Solomon Islands, facilitated by Fr. Blyth. This was truly an exception as we have nowhere near the financial resources to support such an operation, but it does exemplify what St. James’ has been able to support in scope and kind. Our most recent allocations have been directed to support the following: • $350.00 to cover the per diem costs of Kelvin Bee’s attendance at the Truth and Reconciliation Report in Ottawa earlier this month. • $750.00 to The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to help Syrian refugees keep safe and warm, providing them with shelter, sleeping mats, blankets, food and access to school in Jordan and Lebanon. • $500.00 to Warm Heart Initiatives, co-founded by our own Amelia Birch. Warm Heart Initiatives partners with local folk in Malawi, Southern Africa, to enhance health, nutrition, education, agriculture, job creation and trades training. The OC is exploring fund generation to sustain this work over the long term. Recently, one parishioner dedicated one fourth of their giving to the work of the Outreach Committee. Some funding from the past has come from the Burwell fund, annual church funds and in one case, from an estate designation. The OC provides an opportunity for giving for parishioners

with a heart for outreach and we are always appreciative of donations supporting our mandate to help others and walk the talk of our Christian faith. Doug Ibbott, OC Chair CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Anna Marie Bustin and Kevin Bustard whose wedding will be on Saturday, July 25, at 10:30 am at St. James’. It will be followed by a potluck luncheon in the Parish Hall. Kevin and Anna Marie are extending an invitation to their friends at St. James’ to come and celebrate with them. If you are able to attend, please RSVP by July 12th to christian.girlie78@gmail.com. Also, if you are able to join with Fr. Kevin and Allan in volunteering to help with the setup and cleanup of the lunch, please let Anna Marie know. Your help will be appreciated! FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS (as of July 5th) You may have noticed that there have been some changes to the Lady Garden in the past two weeks. It is being redeveloped as a permanent memorial garden, and has become the place of interment for the cremated remains of those who were formerly buried at St. David’s and St. Luke’s. When St. David’s closed, one of the things that had to be cared for was the memorial garden. The relatives of those interred there expressed a desire to transfer their remains to another Anglican church. As St. James’ has had a long relationship with St. David’s, it seemed reasonable to move them here. The memorial garden at St. Luke’s Court has now been moved to the Lady Garden as well, where it will be much more accessible and visible in a location within the boundaries of the church. It will also be better maintained than at present. The garden will be dedicated and blessed when it is complete. The plants that were removed will be replaced and new plants (and hopefully a Dogwood that is not susceptible to disease) will be put in. The plaque that is currently at St. Luke’s listing the names of those whose ashes are interred will be placed in the church. New lighting has been installed and an irrigation system is under development. To that end, donations THE THURIBLE | 19

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person - whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows - was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness." The Thurible

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, "Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offence at him. Then Jesus said to them, "Prophets are not without honour, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house." And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house,

The Church is called to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel 'afresh in each generation',* discerning how to express its message in a way which speaks to its contemporary world. We see this in the many and varied ways in which, not without disagreement, bloody sometimes to its shame, the Church has reformed and renewed itself over the centuries. We proclaim the Gospel not only in word, in preaching, teaching and conversation, or in deed, how our actions and our way of living reflect the love of Christ, but also through our liturgy.

St James' is renowned for the dignity and beauty of its worship, as we seek to offer worthily to God our Father the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, which is our first duty and privilege as his children. The High Mass, with its splendid music and ceremonial, is a pointer to the glory and mystery of God, drawing us more deeply into the life of God the Holy Trinity and then sending us out to live and love for him in his world, only to find that he himself is there ahead of us. Long may it be so!

Nonetheless in this Interim period, we shall do well to share December this year will mark the conversation about how we do our fiftieth anniversary of the closing of liturgy, how we take note of the Second Vatican Council, which liturgical scholarship and renewal, has been described as the Holy how the liturgy is perceived by Spirit breathing a breath of fresh air longstanding stalwarts and into the life of the Roman Catholic newcomers alike, how what we do and indeed the wider Church. One at St James' expresses the Anglostrand of this has been in liturgical Catholic tradition in the context of renewal and revision, strikingly for the Anglican Church of Canada. It Roman Catholics with the new is a conversation to which I look Missal and Mass in the vernacular, forward. but across the Provinces of the Anglican Communion and in the Fr. Kevin Reformed Churches too. Liturgical scholarship is teaching us that the *From The Preface to The liturgy is indeed a focus of stability, Declaration of Assent in the Church but that it is not static, set in stone, of England. rather dynamic and evolving.

HYMN 362 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken Glorious things of thee are spoken, Sion, city of our God; he whose word cannot be broken formed thee for his own abode; on the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may'st smile at all thy foes. See! the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughters and all fear of want remove. Who can faint, when such a river ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace which, like the Lord, the Giver, never fails from age to age. Saviour, if of Sion’s city, I through grace a member am, Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in thy name: Fading is the worldling’s pleasure, All his boasted pomp and show; Solid joys and lasting treasure None but Sion’s children know.

Sit or kneel 70 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Jesus, the Joy of Loving Hearts Jesus, the joy of loving hearts, true source of life, our lives sustain; from the best bliss that earth imparts we turn unfilled to thee again.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on this first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

Your truth unchanged has ever stood; you rescue those who on you call: to those yet seeking, you are good; to those who find you, all in all. We taste of you, the living bread, and long to feast upon you still. We drink from you, the fountainhead; our thirsty souls from you we fill. Our restless spirits long for you, however may our lot be cast, glad, when your gracious smile we view, blessed when our faith can hold you fast. Jesus forever with us stay; make all our moments calm and bright; chase the dark night of sin away; spread through the world your holy light.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord;
