A Reflection A TRADITIONAL CALL TO WORSHIP: VENITE – A SONG OF TRIUMPH

O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us heartily rejoice in the rock of our salvation. Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving and be glad in him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God and a great king above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth and the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands have moulded the dry land. Come, let us worship and bow down and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God; we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

O that today you would listen to his voice: 'Harden not your hearts as at Meribah, on that day at Massah in the wilderness, 'When your forebears tested me, and put me to the proof, though they had seen my works. 'Forty years long I detested that generation and said, "This people are wayward in their hearts; they do not know my ways." 'So I swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter into my rest."' Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Psalm 95

The canticle may end here.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off. Isaiah 55:10-13

Reader Allll

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

You visit the earth and water it abundantly; you make it very plenteous; the river of God is full of water. You prepare the grain, for so you provide for the earth. You drench the furrows and smooth out the ridges; with heavy rain you soften the ground and bless its increase. Antiphon You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty. May the fields of the wilderness be rich for grazing, and the hills be clothed with joy. Antiphon Psalm 65:9-13 HIGH MASS | 9

EPISTLE READING Reader

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law indeed it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you. Romans 8:1-11

Reader Allll

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA

A cantor begins the Alleluia; all repeat it thereafter.

Alleluia. You, O God, are praised in Zion; to you shall vows be performed in Jerusalem. Alleluia. O you who answer prayer! To you all flesh shall come. Alleluia. Te decet hymnus (Mode VI)

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon Allll Deacon Allll

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: "Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen! Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty." All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY A Call to Prayer and Action for our Friends and Neighbours in the Central Interior! I know that many have already been praying for our friends and neighbour throughout the Central Interior during this devastating time of wildfires. Many of us have family and friends who have had to flee their homes and communities in the last few days and are just now learning that many will be out of their homes for even more days. Like you, I have been following the news and using social media to follow the whereabouts of the family of God within the Central Interior. Our clergy and lay leaders have been doing outstanding ministry as they respond to the displacement of people, and they have also been keeping us informed at the Territory Office. All the residents of the Territory and beyond need our help now during this terrifying time!

What can we do? A Call to Prayer! I invite you to set time aside to pray for the residents of our communities and for those who are working to control and put out the fires and protect the effected cities. Gather with your friends to pray or organize

a special time of prayer in your parish churches. Please be in touch with those who have family living and working in the area and assure them of our support and friendship. We are here to help. Of special concern are the many volunteer fire fighters and emergency response people– many of them who worship with us–and who have been doing extraordinary duties since Friday to care for our communities. I ask that you be mindful of those in our communities who have in the past experienced wildfires and the loss of homes. The images that we see on TV and the smell of smoke in the air are trigging memories for some within our parish communities. Please gather them in and ensure we remember those who will have a difficult time.

People around the world are praying for us. I am aware that the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer has a special call for prayer out amongst their network. Our partner diocese of Montreal has assured us of their prayerful support and many more dioceses

I know have been holding us in pray as well. Yesterday, at the prayer vigil at St Paul’s two song that we sang have kept me reassured of God’s never failing presence with us in the midst of these difficult times for us: Like a Rock, God is under our Feet. Like the starry night sky God is over our head. Like the sun on the horizon God is ever before. Like the river runs to ocean, our home is in God evermore. (More Voices 92) And a song that has become prayer for me.... O healing river, send down your waters Send down your waters, upon the land. (CP 578) It may seem that we are alone at the moment but we have many who are reaching out to us in prayer, in concrete offers of help and in care for us. And we know that our home is in God evermore! Blessings, +Barbara Andrews, Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior

CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS A long-standing tradition of Anglican churches is the rôle of Choral Scholar – a university student who receives a scholarship in exchange for singing in the choir. The programme adds voices to our choir, improving the tone, and balance – and also offers students a marvellous opportunity to gain experience singing some of the finest choral works and learning a wide range of church music. Additionally, the benefits of this programme continue throughout the year, as also over the summer months the music ministry is supported by our Choral Scholars. Based on the success over the past year, the Trustees have agreed to support the Choral Scholarship programme for another season starting in September in a fund-matching model. A number of generous donations have already been received from individual parishioners, and we are in need of some additional help. If you appreciate music, please consider supporting the Choral Scholarship programme. You can use the donation envelope from the pew and write 2435 Music Scholarship on the envelope. Or, go to www.stjames.bc.ca/donate to give online and specify 2435 Music Scholarship as the purpose of your donation. ST. JAMES’ DAY: OUR FAITH IN ACTION Sun. July 23 10:30 am Procession & High Mass Guest Preacher: The Right Reverend Stephen Conway, Bishop of Ely, UK After High Mass we will gather for a lunch to acknowledge and celebrate the various forms of “outreach” at St. James’. In our parish, “our faith in action” takes on many forms—as individuals or in groups, through simple actions or large events, locally or internationally. Our faith calls us to reach

beyond ourselves to meet others in Christian love. On this day we wish to honour the diverse expressions of faith in our congregation. There will be a short presentation during lunch followed by a “walk-about” to view display tables prepared by various individuals and groups who undertake initiatives at or through St. James’. Questions regarding this event can be addressed to Audrey Guay (audrey@stjames.bc.ca). We look forward to seeing you then! THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING: EVEN THE CHURCH? Sun. July 30 at 1:30 pm, Bishops’ Room The St. James’ Social Justice Group in partnership with Our Lady of Guadalupe Tonantzin Community is hosting lunch and a screening of the movie, This Changes Everything. “While the movie is not explicitly ‘faith-based,’ it is sparking dialogue in faith communities across the country. Could Naomi Klein’s movie on climate change...When Naomi Klein was invited to speak at a Vatican press conference after the release of Pope Francis’s encyclical on climate change, she found a faith perspective that resonated with both her own analysis of the problem’s root causes and her own hopes for the future ... it would be impossible to watch it without finding numerous resonances between the views discussed by Klein and the views—good and bad—that Christians have articulated about the relationship of humans to God’s creation.” Surrey Interfaith Council RSVP to Pat McSherry: patmcsherry@telus.net or call 604 687 6844 or sign-up in the Narthex. MISSION TO SEAFARERS Mission to Seafarers began with the Rev. John Ashley in 1835 looking out at ships in the Bristol Channel England and feeling moved to reach out to the seafarers. It is the Anglican Churches ministry to all seafarers regardless of race and faith. In Vancouver we work with our ecumenical partners the RC Church and Stella Maris and the Christian Reformed Church. There are chaplains and volunteers from each as well as staff who work

in our two centres one in Vancouver and one in Delta Port -Roberts Bank. Through a network of chaplains, volunteers and staff who continue to proclaim God’s love to seafarers in over 200 ports around the world. Chaplains visit seafarers on their ships, ready to offer help of whatever kind is required be it practical or spiritual. It includes asking after the welfare of the crew, being available to listen, visiting them in hospital, comforting the bereaved, offering worship. A “ship packet” is taken onboard which can include maps and information about the port city i.e. Vancouver, devotional material, prayers, The Sea magazine. The Chaplains also build relationships with the wider maritime community such as the Chamber of Shipping, the International Transport Federation and others in providing for the welfare of seafarers. Chaplains are a presence in the port for all, including those who work on shore. The very nature of seafarer’s work means that they need special consideration. Their isolation and long absences from their homes and families tend to accentuate or create problems. They need people who are aware of their special circumstances, who are prepared to come to them and be a welcoming and supportive presence.

The Mission to Seafarers is entirely dependent on donations. You can help by: volunteering to help with our fundraisers such as our Christmas gifts for seafarers either in person or through gift donations; by volunteering as a ship visitor with training provided; by making a monetary donation; by participating in our fundraisers such as the annual Cycle for Seafarers.
