Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES  To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst;  To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ;  To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need;  To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 9:45 AM Rosary Prayers, Lady Chapel 10:30 AM High Mass, Church 12:00 PM Coffee Hour, Parish Hall 5:00 PM Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel ______________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection “Lord help us! Give us your peace, teach us peace, guide us towards peace. Open our eyes and our hearts and give us the courage to say: “never again war!”: with war all is destroyed! Give us the courage to perform concrete gestures to build peace. Make us available to listen to the cries of our fellow citizens who ask us to transform our arms into instruments of peace, our fears into trust, our tension into forgiveness. Amen.” Pope Francis on Sunday July 13th asked for prayers for peace in the Holy Land. http://en.radiovaticana.va/news/2014/07/13/ pope_francis_appeals_for_peace_in_the_holy_land/1102837

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Genesis. Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place - and I did not know it!" And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. He called that place Bethel. Genesis 28:10-19A

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting places and are acquainted with all my ways. Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, but you, O Lord, know it altogether. Antiphon You press upon me behind and before and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain to it. Antiphon Psalm 139:1-5

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh - for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ - if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the HIGH MASS | 9

creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Romans 8:12-25 Sub-deacon Allll

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Jesus put before them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came 10 | HIGH MASS

up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?' He answered, 'An enemy has done this.' The slaves said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?' But he replied, 'No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'" Then Jesus left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field." He answered, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!" Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth. With a population over half a million persons, 75% are under 25 years of age. It is said to be one of the most densely populated spaces on the planet. And it ranks highly as one of the most troubled places one could live. Perhaps it is ironic that I should write about one of the least desirable places to live in our global village (not what I really believe) from the vantage point of Vancouver — one of the most desirable. The Gaza City I knew and loved was before the withdrawal of Israeli troops and settlers in 2005 and even the Oslo accords of 1993. From the early 1990s my abiding memories are the children, the violence and its medical care. Children were everywhere to be seen and met. To them my colleagues and I were a curiosity as white strangers from England. Loaded with candy we eased our way through the city. Though I sensed tension and an ever present fear of violence. Tires burned in the street. Mistaken at one point as Israeli, our vehicle was showered with stones. The negotiating skills of our Palestinian driver saved us. An oasis of peace in well-tended grounds and a place of healing is

the Anglican Al Ahli Arab Hospital. Its purpose is starkly evident: "The Ahli Arab mission is to glorify God and bear witness to His love as manifested in the life of Jesus Christ. Ahli Arab Hospital is doing this through the provision of high quality patient-centered health care services... The hospital offers to serve all who seek treatment without prejudice to any religious or ethnic community and irrespective of social class, gender and political affiliation. These services are delivered in a spirit of love and service..." Imagine its work and ministry during these days of intensified conflict. The Episcopal News Service reported today (July 18): "Staff at the Al-Ahli hospital...have maintained around-the-clock care since the beginning of the crisis. They are now calling for help to provide urgent medical services and critical care to those injured, displaced and traumatized in the conflict."

OPPORTUNITES TO SERVE ST. JAMES’ DAY PARISH PICNIC VOLUNTEERS NEEDED As you know, we plan to have another Parish Family Picnic this year on July 27 after High Mass. Last year’s picnic was a lot of fun according to those who attended, and we hope to have a big success again this year. The thing that helped last year and will help again this year is volunteers, and lots of them. We need help setting up tables and chairs before the picnic and taking them down afterwards, food and drink service, kids’ games and cleanup during the picnic and after. We also need rides from the church to the Mission and back again for those who can’t walk that far. If you are willing and able to help, please contact Reece Wrightman, Pat McSherry or Betty Carlson as soon as possible. MEMBERSHIP FORMS If you are new to the Parish, or have not yet filled out a Membership Form, why not pick one up in the Narthex, or request one from the Office. The information you provide on the Membership Forms assists the Parish to better minister with you. ACCOMODATION NEEDED Sean Birch's brother is coming to Vancouver this fall to do his Graduate Studies at UBC in Environmental Health. He is 39, responsible, quiet (introverted, but a good conversationalist), exceptionally hard working student, loves cycling & bike mechanics, cooking, and good beer. Budget is probably quite limited, so he would be interested in renting a room, or sharing a lease. Please send us an email if you might have something available starting mid-late August: roweramo@gmail.com or smbirch@gmail.com.

OUR PARISH YOUTH WORKER CORNER Thank you to everyone who took part in the youth ministry discernment gathering on July 19. I look forward to continuing the discussion of how we can all best serve the youth of our parish. A few words to challenge you from a wonderful and insightful book I’ve recently read: “If we take the yearnings of young people seriously, then we can admit to ourselves that youth aren’t interested in our answers...They’re not looking for safe activities. What they’re seeking is the championship of adults who embody a different way of being. They’re looking for living adults who have room inside of them. Room for creativity and compassion. Room to hold the suffering and ambiguities of life. Room to listen and reflect on hard questions. Room to see the larger wholeness that exists beneath our fragmented societies. Youth are looking for adults who can guide them toward a different way of being, of living in the world. They are looking for adults who know how to live lives of love.” Mark Yaconelli, Contemplative Youth Ministry: Practicing the presence of Jesus ST. JAMES’ RUNNING GROUP A reminder to anyone who might be interested that on Sundays after High Mass, and on Thursday evenings after Evening Prayer, we go for a walk, or run together. Some of us are working towards the Eastside 10km, but you don't have to do this, just come for some healthy and fun fellowship. If you would like to join us please come along, or contact Jenny Scott youthworker@stjames.bc.ca or Ruth Greenaway-Robbins ruthgrsoprano@me.com If you are preparing to walk or run for the Eastside 10km on Saturday, September 13th and would like to

register as part of the St. James' team please contact Jenny, or Ruth, as soon as possible for us to get the best discount. You don't have to be part of the St. James' Running group just able to run or walk 10km! Even the Rector is donning his running shoes! There are some people who would very much like to run, or walk, the Eastside 10km, however the cost is prohibitive. If you would like to support someone in the race, why not donate a race entry fee? Please speak to Jenny, or Ruth. The race entry fee is between $20-$45 depending on age. To avoid injury it's important to have the right footwear, however, for some people in our parish this is financially impossible and any donations for this would be very welcome as well.

RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIP HELP INCOMING REGENT COLLEGE STUDENTS THIS COMING FALL TERM The Regent College Student Housing Services is looking for hosts to provide free housing and local telephone use for up to one week (between August 1 and September 15) for incoming students while they search for permanent housing. Meals are not expected (but welcome nonetheless!). Please contact Daniel Lee at 604-221-3335, or housing@regentcollege.edu if you’re interested. EXAMINING OUR LIVES BY THE LIGHT OF GOD’S GRACE: A CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER RETREAT Susan Phillips will be leading the Regent’s College summer prayer retreat at St. Helen's Anglican Church in Vancouver. Join us for a contemplative retreat during which we will engage in an examination of our lives—individually and as the people of God. Please bring a Bible, something on which to write, and a willingness to read your own God-inscribed heart. $35 per person, includes lunch and refreshments. PLEASE NOTE: Registration ends Thursday, July 24 at 12:30pm. For more information, contact retreats@regent-college.edu. THE THURIBLE | 27

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK Now, the nagging questions remains: what do we mean by justice here? If we are concerned for a long-term settlement, justice cannot mean a comprehensive victory of one side over the other, for both sides have their share of delusions...both sides need to come to terms with their delusions and accept that neither is going to win over the other in this kind of context.

COMMEMORATION Saint Mary Magdalene July 22

Mary was called the Magdalene because she was a woman of Mag′dala, a village in Galilee. In the Gospels it is said that Jesus cast seven demons out of her and that she was one of a group of women who followed him and used their wealth to provide for the rest of his companions. Mary accompanied Jesus to Jerusalem, and three of the evangelists — Matthew, Mark, and John — give her first place among the women disciples who stood nearby while their Lord was crucified. All the Gospel accounts agree that, on the morning of the third day, she went to his tomb in order to anoint his corpse — and was astonished to find the tomb empty, except for mysterious strangers who told her that Christ was risen. According to John, it was just then that Mary became the first to behold and speak with the risen Lord himself; John also reports that Jesus appointed her to proclaim the news of his resurrection to the apostles. For this reason Mary Magdalene is regarded as their equal by the Eastern Church, for she was the apostle to the apostles. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION St. Bridget of Sweden Abbess of Vadstena, Patron of Europe, 1373 July 23

[Bridget,] the most celebrated saint of the Northern kingdoms, [was] born about 1303; died 23 July, 1373. …In 1316, at the age of thirteen, she was united in marriage to Ulf Gudmarsson, who was then eighteen. She acquired great influence over her noble and pious husband, and the happy marriage was blessed with eight children, among them St. Catherine of Sweden. The saintly life and the great charity of Bridget soon made her name known far and wide. She was acquainted with several learned and pious theologians, among them Nicolaus Hermanni, later Bishop of Linköping, Matthias, canon of Linköping, her confessor, Peter, Prior of Alvastrâ, and Peter Magister, her confessor after Matthias. She was later at the court of King Magnus Eriksson, over whom she gradually acquired great influence. Early in the forties (1341-43) in company with her husband she made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella. On the return journey her husband was stricken with an attack of illness, but recovered sufficiently to finish the journey. Shortly afterwards, however, he died (1344) in the Cistercian monastery of Alvastrâ in East Gothland. Bridget now devoted herself entirely to practices of religion and asceticism, and to religious undertakings. The visions which she believed herself to have had from her early childhood now became more frequent and definite. She believed that Christ Himself appeared to her, and she wrote down the revelations she then received, which were in great repute during the Middle Ages. St. Bridget now founded a new religious congregation, the Brigittines, or Order of St. Saviour, whose chief monastery, at Vadstena, was richly endowed by King Magnus and his queen (1346). To obtain confirmation for her institute, and at the same time to seek a larger sphere of activity for her mission, which was the moral uplifting of the period, she journeyed to Rome in 1349, and remained there until her death, except while absent on pilgrimages, among them one to the Holy Land in 1373. In August, 1370, Pope Urban V confirmed the Rule of her congregation. Bridget made earnest representations to Pope Urban, urging the removal of the Holy See from Avignon back to Rome. She accomplished the greatest good in Rome, however, by her pious and charitable life, and her earnest admonitions to others to adopt a better life, following out the excellent precedents she had set in her native land. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02782a.htm.
