Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection In Jesus of Nazareth God shows in a special way how urgently He seeks for humanity, and how entirely He has committed Himself to human happiness.
But even if you receive no sign, no word from Him, you will still recognise Him. His very absence is full of the mystery of greatness.
In Jesus of Nazareth a man shows how completely we can belong to God; how much freedom and humanity, how much courage and self-forgetfulness one can possess when one has been found by God and has surrendered oneself to him. In Jesus there is also a future for you as you go by His road through sin and death towards fellowship and love, unfailing glory and life.
It can help you not to seek and serve some image of him you yourself have created.
In faith you will recognise Him in the works of His hands, and above all in men and women, made in His image and likeness, and most clearly of all in the love which is Jesus.
So never let yourself lose heart but go on seeking Him in everything, in everybody— they are all pledges that you will finally meet Him. Work hard to know Him face to face. If you abide in love you will abide in God and not wander anymore in darkness.
Then live in joyfulness and hope, unanxious, without any trace of fear, at peace with yourself and the world, in ceaseless reverence and thanks. Because God’s love for you endures for ever.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Second Book of Samuel. David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty-thousand. David and all the people with him set out and went from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who is enthroned on the cherubim. They carried the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart with the ark of God; and Ahio went in front of the ark. David and all the house of Israel were dancing before the Lord with all their might, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom to the city of David with rejoicing; and when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. David danced before the Lord with all his might; David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with

shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal daughter of Saul looked out of the window, and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. They brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and offerings of well-being before the Lord. When David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the offerings of well-being, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts, and distributed food among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, to each a cake of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins. Then all the people went back to their homes. 2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12B-19

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:3-14

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon Allll Deacon Allll
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. King Herod heard of it, for Jesus' name had become known. Some were saying, "John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him." But others said, "It is Elijah." And others said, "It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old." But when Herod heard of it, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised." For Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because Herod had married her. For John had been telling Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." And Herodias had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he protected him. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him. But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and for the leaders of Galilee. When his daughter Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it." And he solemnly swore to her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom." She went out and said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" She replied, "The head of John the baptizer." Immediately she rushed back to the king and requested, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." The king was deeply grieved; yet out of regard for his oaths and for the guests, he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb. Mark 6:14-29

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Fr Kevin writes: It was a privilege to join the Living Wage Rally at City Hall on Wednesday last week, alongside others from St James', and representatives of other churches and faith groups, community and labour organizations in Metro Vancouver Alliance (to which St James' is affiliated) to support the motion before the City Council to progress the City towards becoming a Living Wage Employer. Please find below an edited version of the report of the rally on the diocesan website, vancouver.anglican.org. It was uplifting to hear the Revd Margaret Marquardht inspire the gathering with the cry “Justice is Good!” It was encouraging too today to hear the news that our Mayor is one of a number of Mayors of significant cities invited by Pope Francis to Rome to discuss climate-change issues. “100-125 people from more than two dozen organizations gathered on the Vancouver City Hall grounds with signs and banners in enthusiastic support of Vancouver becoming a Living Wage City. A good 20 percent of those in attendance were people affiliated with parishes of the diocese of New Westminster. The Rev. Margaret Marquardt addressed the Council on behalf of Bishop Melissa: ‘Economic justice is at the root of the Christian gospel.
We hear a great deal these days about the many who cannot afford to live in this city where they work. For those struggling to stay, housing costs are eating into a greater and greater percentage of their income. They are going into debt as they use credit to buy food for their family. This motion on the Living Wage makes it clear that Vancouver City Council is taking a lead in making Vancouver a livable city! It is a sign to the wider community that paying people a livable wage…one that keeps them out of poverty…this is the right thing to do. So many are struggling day to day to make ends meet with the ongoing stress this causes in families physically, emotionally, spiritually and economically. This is a vital issue before all of us.’ There is a passage from the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 29:7) in the Jewish scriptures that is compelling. ‘Seek the well-being of the city, for in its well-being is yours.’ This is true for all of us as we attend to a living wage for citizens. We all receive the benefit of being in a livable city! Bishop Melissa has spoken clearly...as she reminds us ‘that it is our responsibility to stand with those who are struggling and to show that we mean to do something about it. This motion on the Living Wage is a way towards this end!’”

Wrightman or Betty Carlson know if you are able to help. OUTREACH COMMITTEE REACTIVATED! The St. James’ Outreach Committee has been reactivated and reconstituted starting last month. Trustees and clergy appointed four new members to conduct committee work for the continuation of outreach at St. James’. The past committee was chaired by Dr. John Conway for many years and achieved much to respond to the diakonia or action part of our worship and we are excited to resume this aspect of our congregational life at St. James’. The action component of our worship includes evangelism, stewardship and service. Much of our work is devoted to “service” as we reach out to those who need our help. The Outreach Committee (OC) is not the only agent of outreach at St. James’. As evidenced at our last Outreach Sunday, 17 different outreach initiatives were represented by various guilds and groups within our congregation. The OC’s mandate is solely outreach but we are keen to collaborate with guilds and groups to accomplish the aim to encourage the work and witness of our church in the widest sense. This year, we were activated by a donation of $5000.00 from John Conway to continue this work. Over the years, funds have been allocated to local, national and international initiatives and requests. One project that stands out was the funding of a boat and motor for the Melanesian Brothers to minister to the various villages in the Solomon Islands, facilitated by Fr. Blyth. This was truly an exception as we have nowhere near the financial resources to support such an operation, but it does exemplify what St. James’ has been able to support in scope and kind. Our most recent allocations have been directed to support the following: $350.00 to cover the per diem costs of Kelvin Bee’s attendance at the Truth and Reconciliation Report in Ottawa earlier this month. $750.00 to The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to help Syrian refugees keep safe and warm,

complete the garden, after which it will be dedicated and blessed. The plaque that is currently at St. Luke’s listing the names of those whose ashes are interred will be placed in the church. Donations for the restoration and lighting of the memorial garden would be very helpful.
The OC is exploring fund generation to sustain this work over the long term. Recently, one parishioner dedicated one fourth of their giving to the work of the Outreach Committee. Some funding from the past has come from the Burwell fund, annual church funds and in one case, from an estate designation. The OC provides an opportunity for giving for parishioners with a heart for outreach and we are always appreciative of donations supporting our mandate to help others and walk the talk of our Christian faith. Doug Ibbott, OC Chair
All of the lights in the nave have now been replaced with LED lighting. A light has also been installed to illumine the Nisga’a mask.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS (as of July 12th) You may have noticed that there have been some changes to the Lady Garden in the past two weeks. It is being redeveloped as a permanent memorial garden, and has become the place of interment for the cremated remains of those who were formerly buried at St. David’s and St. Luke’s. When St. David’s closed, one of the things that had to be cared for was the memorial garden. The relatives of those interred there expressed a desire to transfer their remains to another Anglican church. As St. James’ has had a long relationship with St. David’s, it seemed reasonable to move them here.
KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation.
The memorial garden at St. Luke’s Court has now been moved to the Lady Garden as well, where it will be much more accessible and visible in a location within the boundaries of the church. It will also be better maintained than at present. New lighting has now been installed. A load of topsoil is being brought in to cover the entire garden, and the irrigation system is being reconnected. This will quickly be followed by replanting, then covering the garden with a layer of bark mulch to keep the weeds from growing. There may be some final touches to 28 | THE THURIBLE

God has chosen us!
From our second reading, from Paul's Letter to the Ephesians, chapter 1, verses 4, 5: 'God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. Are you a good player? Not everyone is, you know. Here is a story about a boy named Thomas. Thomas looked up from his book as the teacher announced to the class, "It is time for recess and today, we are going to play softball. Jacob, you and Mary will be the team captains today." "Oh no!" Thomas thought to himself, "that means that they will be choosing their teams and I will probably
be one of the last one chosen -- as usual." As he stood with the other children on the playground, Thomas tried to pretend that it didn't bother him that one by one the other children were chosen and he was left behind. But, if the truth be known, it really hurt. "I wish that just once I could be the first one chosen" Thomas thought to himself. Surely there must be a better way to choose teams. Why not have everyone stand in a line and number off 1-2-1-2-1-2 and then all of the ones could be on one team and all of the twos on the other. That way, no one would have to be the last one chosen. Our Bible lesson today is about being chosen to be in the family of God. How would you like to be in God's family? Well, we can all be in God's family and we don't have to worry that we might be the last one chosen either. The Bible tells us that before he even made the world, God loved us and chose us. Before we were even born, God decided to adopt us into his own family. Why would God want us to be in his family? Is it because we are so good and so wonderful? No, it is because HE is so good and so wonderful. We needed an eternal home, and he gave us a home in heaven. We needed someone to help us to grow and he is there to help us every day. We needed someone to love us and he loved us more than anyone ever could. God has chosen us -- now it is up to us to say, "Yes." In our baptism we become God's adopted children and he makes everything work out according to his plan for us. Dear Father, thank you for choosing us and for sending your Son so that we could be a part of your family. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

COMMEMORATION St. Bonaventure Bishop and Teacher of the Faith, 1274 July 14
St. Bonaventure, known as “the seraphic doctor,” was born at Bagnorea in Tuscany, in 1221. He received the name of Bonaventure in consequence of an exclamation of St. Francis of Assisi, when, in response to the pleading of the child’s mother, the saint prayed for John’s recovery from a dangerous illness, and, foreseeing the future greatness of the little John, cried out “O Buona ventura” — O good fortune! At the age of twenty-two St. Bonaventure entered the Franciscan Order. Having made his vows, he was sent to Paris to complete his studies under the celebrated doctor Alexander of Hales, an Englishman and a Franciscan. After the latter’s death he continued his course under his successor, John of Rochelle. In Paris he became the intimate friend of the great St. Thomas Aquinas. He received the degree of Doctor, together with St. Thomas Aquinas, ceding to his friend against the latter’s inclination, the honor of having it first conferred upon him. Like St. Thomas Aquinas, he enjoyed the friendship of the holy King, St. Louis. At the age of thirty-five he was chosen General of his Order and restored a perfect calm where peace had been disturbed by internal dissensions. He did much for his Order and composed The Life of St. Francis. He also assisted at the translation of the relics of St. Anthony of Padua. He was nominated Archbishop of York by Pope Clement IV, but he begged not to be forced to accept that dignity. Gregory X obliged him to take upon himself a greater one, that of Cardinal and Bishop of Albano, one of the six suffragan sees of Rome. Before his death he abdicated his office of General of the Franciscan Order. He died while he was assisting at the Second Council of Lyons, on July 15, 1274. http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=169

COMMEMORATION St. Margaret of Antioch in Pisidia Martyr, 304 July 17
Margaret the Virgin, also known as Margaret of Antioch (in Pisidia), virgin and martyr, is celebrated as a saint by Anglican Churches and in the Orthodox Church. Her historical existence has been questioned; she was declared apocryphal by Pope Gelasius I in 494, but devotion to her revived in the West with the Crusades. According to the Golden Legend, she was a native of Antioch, daughter of a pagan priest named Aedesius. She was scorned by her father for her Christian faith, and lived in the country, [in] modern day Turkey, with a foster-mother keeping sheep. Olybrius, the Governor of the Roman Diocese of the East, offered her marriage at the price of her renunciation of Christianity. Upon her refusal, she was cruelly tortured, during which various miraculous incidents occurred. She was put to death in A.D. 304. The Eastern Orthodox Church knows Margaret as Saint Marina, and celebrates her feast day on July 17. She has been identified with Saint Pelagia—“Marina” being the Latin equivalent of the Greek name “Pelagia”—who, according to a legend, was also called Margarita. We possess no historical documents on St Margaret as distinct from St Pelagia. The Greek Marina came from Antioch, Pisidia (as opposed to Antioch of Syria). The cultus of Saint Margaret became very widespread in England, where more than 250 churches are dedicated to her, most famously St. Margaret’s, Westminster, the parish church of the British Houses of Parliament in London. http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=199.
