Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Prince of Peace, in every place turn hearts aside from violence and inspire them to lay down arms and undertake the path of dialogue. Look upon Nigeria, rent by constant attacks which do not spare the innocent and defenseless. Bless the land where you chose to come into the world, and grant a favourable outcome to the peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians. Heal the wounds of the beloved country of Iraq, once more struck by frequent acts of violence. Lord of life, protect all who are persecuted for your name. Grant hope and consolation to the displaced and refugees, especially in the Horn of Africa and in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Grant that migrants in search of a dignified life may find acceptance and assistance. May tragedies like those we have witnessed this year, with so many deaths at Lampedusa, never occur again! Child of Bethlehem, touch the hearts of all those engaged in human trafficking, that they may realize the gravity of this crime against humanity. Look upon the many children who are kidnapped, wounded and killed in armed conflicts, and all those who are robbed of their childhood and forced to become soldiers. Lord of heaven and earth, look upon our planet, frequently exploited by human greed and rapacity. Help and protect all the victims of natural disasters, especially the beloved people of the Philippines, gravely affected by the recent typhoon. Dear brothers and sisters, today, in this world, in this humanity, is born the Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. Let us pause before the Child of Bethlehem. Let us allow our hearts to be touched, let us allow ourselves to be warmed by the tenderness of God; we need his caress. God is full of love: to him be praise and glory forever! God is peace: let us ask him to help us to be peacemakers each day, in our life, in our families, in our cities and nations, in the whole world. Let us allow ourselves to be moved by God’s goodness. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Jeremiah. For thus says the Lord: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, "Save, O Lord, your people, the remnant of Israel." See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labour, together; a great company, they shall return here. With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, "He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd a flock." For the Lord has ransomed Jacob, and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him. They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the goodness of the Lord, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over the young of the flock and the herd; their life shall become like a watered garden, and they shall never languish again. Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy, I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow. garden, and they shall never languish again. Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy, I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow. I will give the priests their fill of fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my bounty, says the Lord. Jeremiah 31:7-14

THE EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the HIGH MASS | 9

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. (Genuflect) And the Word became flesh and lived among us, (Stand) and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.'") From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known. John 1:10-18

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES “Deliver us from every temptation to be satisfied with false imitations of your will: with talk of peace that masks the face of war, and thanks for plenty that leaves the poor unfed.” From the psalm prayer for Psalm 135 (BAS p.893). As we look around our world where might we be delivered from false imitations which “talk of peace that mask the face of war”? Sayeeda Warsi, in a recent speech at Georgetown University, speaking of the plight of Churches in the Middle East described, “a mass exodus is taking place, on a Biblical scale. In some places, there is real danger that Christianity will become extinct”. Research by the Pew Centre suggests that Christians are reportedly the most widely persecuted religious group in the world. Let’s remove the mask: many of our sisters and brothers are persecuted for their faith. How are we going act in support of them? So as we look around our world where might we be delivered from false imitations of “thanks for plenty that leaves the poor unfed”? This year the General Synod of our Church added a new clause to the words of the baptismal covenant –
the promise we make at every baptism. It is this: "Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God's creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth?" To which the people respond: "I will, with God's help." Each of us is called to develop practices which safeguard the integrity of creation. Our Primate Fred Hiltz, through the work of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) is asking us – all Canadian Anglicans – to commit to “work with people and communities to ensure people have enough good, healthy food to eat. In other words, he is speaking of “food security”, which is the availability of food and one’s access to it. Those of us who have had sufficient food to eat today are among those most privileged in our global village. Now is the time to act. We glorify God by living the mystery of the Incarnation! Some of the fruits of living this mystery are to pursue peace beyond the masks of war and to safeguard the integrity of God’s creation.

Diana Brown May 12, 1908—January 1, 2014
Diana Brown, our oldest and longest serving parishioner died on New Year’s Day, 2014 at the age of 105. Born on May 12th, 1908 on a cattle ranch in Colorado that her London father had purchased in 1881, she moved with her parents to Vancouver in 1916. The family settled in the West End where Diana attended the original Crofton House School. She met her future husband, Hugh Agassiz Brown in Vancouver in 1930, and they married at St. James’ Church in 1931. Both Hugh, who died in the 1970s, and Diana were actively involved in all the concerns of this busy and thriving Parish. A large congregation, including many visitors and guests, marked Diana’s first 100 years in 2008 with a magnificent birthday celebration in the Church and Hall, crowning her 85 years of Christian devotion and unwavering dedication to the life of St. James’. It seems to me that the church's calling is to so embody that hope and peace that it is more than thrill and promise. It is revealed in song and service, in prayer and perseverance, in joy and justice all grounded in God's reconciling love made known.

SAINTS THIS WEEK The Epiphany January 6
The subtitle in The Book of Common Prayer of this, one of the principal feasts of the Church, is “The Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles.” This emphasizes that, from the moment of the Incarnation, the good news of Jesus Christ is for all: Jew and Gentile, the wise and the simple, male and female. Nothing in the Greek text of the Gospels indicates that the Magi were all male or even three in number, and the idea that they were kings is a much later, non-scriptural tradition. The date chosen to celebrate this feast is related to the choice of the Winter Solstice for the celebration of the Nativity of Christ: the northern European pre-Christian tradition celebrated the birth of the Sun on 25 December whereas the Mediterranean and East customarily observed 6 January as the Solstice. As often happens, the two dates merged into a beginning and an end of the same celebration. The Western Church adopted “the twelve days of Christmas” climaxing on the Epiphany, or “Twelfth Night.” The implication by the fifth century was that this was the night on which the Magi arrived. The complications of dating became even more confused with the changing in the West from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar, the Eastern Church refusing to play any part in such a radical change. So this day remains the chief day of celebrating the Incarnation in Orthodox Churches. Celebrating the Saints, Canterbury Press, 1998

SAINTS THIS WEEK St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Educator in New France, 1700 January 12 Marguerite Bourgeoys was a Frenchwoman who came to Canada in 1653. She experienced many disappointments in her effort to find a religious vocation until she was asked to cross the Atlantic and build a school in Montreal, where the children of the colonists could be taught reading, writing, and the Christian faith. During her first decade in the colony Marguerite got her school built and gathered a small community of women to staff it. She then began to send her teachers on rounds of the French villages outside Montreal. This work led to the foundation of the Congrégation de Notre Dame de Montréal. The sisters of the Congregation were sent forth two-by-two; each pair went from settlement to settlement, teaching the catechism and encouraging the faithful. They were expected to use whatever means of transportation they could find, and to provide for their own necessities on the way. Her Congregation proved to be very successful and continues its work to this day, a testimony to the vision of Marguerite Bougeoys, who developed in Canada what she had been unable to find in France – a truly apostolic vocation for herself and other women.
