The Reign of Christ | November 25, 2018 | 10:30 AM
Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst; To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish;
To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 8:30 am Low Mass, Lady Chapel 9:15 am Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 10:30 am High Mass, Church 12:00 pm Stewardship Celebration Lunch, Parish Hall 5:00 pm Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel ______________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The Gifts of the Spirit: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. The Fruits of the Spirit: Galatians 5:22-26 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

HYMN 345 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Christ is the King, O friends rejoice Christ is the King, O friends rejoice! brothers and sisters, with one voice make all men know he is your choice: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. The first Apostles round them drew thousands of faithful men and true, sharing a faith for ever new: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. Then magnify the Lord and raise anthems of joy and holy praise for Christ’s brave saints of ancient days: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. O Christian women, Christian men, all the world over, seek again the Way disciples followed then: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Daniel. As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire. A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousand served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgement, and the books were opened. As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him. To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed. Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14

The Lord is king; he has put on splendid apparel; the Lord has put on his apparel and girded himself with strength. He has made the whole world so sure that it cannot be moved; Ever since the world began, your throne has been established; you are from everlasting. Antiphon The waters have lifted up, O Lord, the waters have lifted up their voice; the waters have lifted up their pounding waves. Mightier than the sound of many waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea, mightier is the Lord who dwells on high. Antiphon Your testimonies are very sure, and holiness adorns your house, O Lord, for ever and for evermore. Antiphon Psalm 93
SECOND READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Revelation to John. Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. Revelation 1:4b-8

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?" Pilate replied, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here." Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." John 18:33-37

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible Notes from the Clergy This Sunday is the Stewardship Celebration Lunch!
Time, talent, treasure: How much have you got, and how much can you afford to give? There are forms in the Narthex that you can complete re time and talents, and the pledge cards have been out for a while. Please bring your card with you tomorrow and drop it in the offering plate. If you forget, you can always return it to the office later.
If you are not sure what time or talent you can offer, give me a call and let’s talk! Everyone has something they can offer to God in our ministry here and it is better that you identify something you can be passionate about; after all, we make time for the things we are passionate about. With that in mind, have a think on these questions before the lunch:
What do you think about the congregation here at St. James’? Do you know people here? What are your concerns for the future? What are your hopes and dreams for St. James’? How does your story fit into the story of St. James’? What changes would you like to see happen and how can you be involved?
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
These are a few things that we can discuss over our lunch! I’m looking forward to it! Time, talent, treasure! Want to be part of the Monday Open Church Ministry team? Get in touch lucy@stjames.bc.ca or 604-3629959. Yes that was a shameless plug. See you soon, Mother Lucy

ADVENT FORMATION: Walking Backwards to Christmas This book study will work with Stephen Cottrell’s brilliant book Walking Backwards to Christmas. Using the deceptively simple device of telling the Christmas story backwards Stephen Cottrell helps us encounter it as though for the first time. His approach enables us to get under the skin of a complex narrative, giving us insights into its many horrors as well as its joys. The books for this study are available for a one time suggested donation of $15.00 each. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. If you need assistance with the cost of the book, please see Mother Lucy or Fr. Kevin. Participants may attend either the Thursday evening or Sunday afternoon sessions. 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS The Worldwide Mothers’ Union supports the 16 Days of Activism campaign, starting today and extending to Mon. Dec. 10. Encouraging people to talk about gender-based violence is critical in breaking the silence and stigma that victims can often face and removing myths that can keep people silent. Creating a safe and non-judgmental environment may encourage those experiencing gender-based violence to speak out. It is therefore important to be aware of how to respond and support those who disclose such experiences. Here are some general principles to consider: Violence and abuse is always wrong and never acceptable The responsibility for the abuse lies with the perpetrator Ultimately, only the person experiencing abuse can decide what course of action to take. We invite all female parishioners to wear the white ribbon and male parishioners to wear the moose hide square, and all to take this pledge: I pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls. 27-7 PRAYER Dec. 2 to Dec. 8 605 East Cordova St., thru the red basement door Join us for an Advent week of prayer.
