The Solemnity of St. James | July 26, 2015 | 10:30 am
Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family, and strangers into our midst; To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest, and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am 8:30 am 10:30 am 12:00 am 5:00 pm

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Be converted to love every day. Change all your energies, all your potential, into selfless gifts for the other person. Then you yourself will be changed from within and through you God’s Kingdom will break into the world. You are called to follow Jesus closely. With Him you will take the road up to Jerusalem, the city of suffering and glorification. With Him you will give everything that the Kingdom may come. On this road you are called to be least of all and not master, to carry other people’s burdens and not lay your own on them, to give freedom instead of taking it, to grow poor in order to make others rich, to take the cross upon yourself thus bringing joy to other people, to die in order that others may live. This is the mystery of the gospel and there is no purpose in endless talk about it. Be silent - for it will be true and genuine only if you practise it. So keep Jesus Christ before your eyes, Don’t hesitate to go anywhere He leads you; don’t stay where you are and don’t look back, but look forward with eagerness to what lies ahead. -from ‘Rule for a New Brother’, Benedictine Priory ‘Regina Pacis’, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

Let us pray. Almighty God our heavenly Father, whose servant James the Apostle was obedient to the calling of thy Son and also drank of his cup of suffering: We beseech thee to keep us faithful to thee until life shall end; and grant us grace as those who have been baptized into Christ’s death, to tread with him the path of service and sacrifice: for his holy name’s sake, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. PROCESSIONAL HYMN 276 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — For All the Saints For all the saints, who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might; thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, Alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; sweet is the calm of paradise the blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! (Continued overleaf)

The word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: You said, "Woe is me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest." Thus you shall say to him, "Thus says the Lord: I am going to break down what I have built, and pluck up what I have planted - that is, the whole land. And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for I am going to bring disaster upon all flesh, says the Lord; but I will give you your life as a prize of war in every place to which you may go." EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in Judea; this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.) Acts 11:27—12:3

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favour of him. And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY As we celebrate today the Feast of St. James the Great, our Patron, we give thanks for his life and witness, and reflect again on what insight and direction we may draw from his example. His scallop shell is a reminder that we are on a journey, a pilgrim people, and that James, the pilgrim's Patron, is our companion in the Way of Christ. He will, if only we allow him, encourage, admonish and guide us in our worship and mission, witness and service. St. James, pray for us!
Our thanks and appreciation are due both to the Choir of Selwyn College for their offering to us, and to Gerald Harder and his team for their sterling work in the preparation and management of the visit. The church was almost full for the concert, and over 100 attended Compline: it was good to see members of the congregation and the local community, together with music-lovers from further afield. Who says no-one will come to St. James' in the evening?!
This past week St. James' has been richly blessed by the visit of the Choir of Selwyn College in the University of Cambridge, UK. Their outstanding concert on Tuesday took us on a musical journey through the liturgies of the academic year. It was exhilarating to listen to this wonderful music set off by the acoustic, and to experience the Choir singing in different parts of the church. On Wednesday, for the first time in many years, the ancient Office of Compline was sung. The Choir led us beautifully and reverently in this service of prayer and reflection at the ending of the day.
Deacon Joyce, Anne Kennedy, Pat McSherry and I will be attending the Diocesan Parish Development Training Course at Rosemary Heights Retreat Centre. We hope this will provide us with some useful tools and insights for our work together in this interim process.

The best thing about having a whole chicken for dinner is the "wishbone." It is great fun for two people around the table, brother, sister, mum, dad or a friend, to close their eyes and make a wish. Then each pulls on the wishbone until it breaks apart. The one who gets the biggest piece is supposed to have their wish come true.
PIGEONS IN THE CHURCH Following our recent problem with pigeons coming into the church through open windows, we are asking all parishioners to help this problem from recurring by ensuring that any open windows are closed after each service. It might help to think, if you need to open a window, please close it when you no longer need it open. Thank-you for your help in this regard. Brian Rocksborough-Smith, for the Wardens
Have you ever planned to have a picnic and it rained? Perhaps you sat and watched the rain and grumbled to yourself, "I wish it would stop raining." What if that wish came true and it really stopped raining FOREVER? There would be no grass, no trees, no flowers. Rivers, lakes, and streams would dry up and all life would begin to disappear. This world would be a miserable place if it stopped raining, wouldn't it? (Fr Kevin certainly hopes it is not raining today to spoil our Parish Picnic, but it has been so dry lately that water is short and there is danger of more forest fires, so we really, really do need the rain!)
PARKING IN VACANT LOT ON EAST CORDOVA We have been notified by City Centre Care Society that the vacant lot between Cooper Place and St. James’ Place will become a paid parking lot effective August 15. This means that there will no longer be free parking at that location. On Sundays there is free parking along Dunlevy Street and along the north side of Cordova beside Oppenheimer Park. Sunday parking under Cooper Place can be purchased from the parish for $125 per year. Reece Wrightman KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. “Jesus said, ‘Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as I came not to be served but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many.’” (Matthew 20.27,28 NRSV, altered)
Have you ever wished for something? Sure you have. We all have. Sometimes we make a wish without thinking about what would happen if our wish really came true.
James and John were two brothers who were disciples of Jesus. One day, their mother came to Jesus and said to him, "Teacher, I want you to do a favour for my two sons." "What do you want me to do for them?" Jesus replied. "In your glorious Kingdom, I want them to sit in places of honor next to you, one at your right and the other at your left." You see, she thought that Jesus was going to set up an earthly kingdom, and she wanted James and John to sit beside him on the throne, to share in his greatness.
Jesus answered her and said, "You don't know what you are asking." Then he explained that whoever wants to be great must be a servant of all. He said, "For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many." Jesus was right! I don't think that being a servant was exactly what James’ and John’s mother was wishing for her sons! THE THURIBLE | 31
Sometimes you and I may say, "I wish I could be more like Jesus." Is that really our wish? If we really want that wish to come true, we must give our lives in service to others. Dear Jesus, help us, like St. James, to discover what it means to say, "I wish I could be more like Jesus." Amen. Adapted from Sermons4Kids, Inc.

Rooted in the Anglican incarnational theology we are part of a growing commitment to the Fifth Mark of Mission “to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.” Ecumenically we identify with the Watershed Discipleship Movement: communities that are asking, “what does it mean to be a follower of the Jesus Way here, among the land, water, creatures and people of a particular place?”
Over the summer we will be gathering community, dreaming dreams, sharing food and exploring the lower Fraser watershed. Mark your calendars for our first events: Saturday August 8 Walk in Pacific Spirit Park, celebrate the Eucharist on a stone altar, and share a potluck meal. Meet St. Anselm parking lot, 5 pm. Saturday August 15 Family Tour of the Lower Seymour Water Reserve and Dam. For families with children, grandchildren, or godchildren. The tour starts at 12:30 pm. Others join us any time after 11:00 am to enjoy the park and share ideas.
Saturday August 29 Coquitlam watershed tour for adults. The tour starts at 12:30 pm. After the tour, at 3:30 pm, we will meet in the park. Register here for both Watershed Tours, sign up early as space is limited. If you can’t make the tour, come for the conversation. http://www.metrovancouver.org/events/watershedtours/Pages/default.aspx
We want to be a place for all bodies, all ages, all families, all genders and will post accessibility information for our events. Laurel Dykstra and the Salal and Cedar Team

COMMEMORATION SS. Joachim & Anne Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary Commemorated this year on July 27 The Gospels tell us little about the home of our Lord’s mother. She is thought to have been of Davidic descent and to have been brought up in a devout Jewish family that cherished the hope of Israel for the coming kingdom of God, in remembrance of the promise to Abraham and the forefathers. In the second century, a devout Christian sought to supply a fuller account of Mary’s birth and family, to satisfy the interest and curiosity of believers. An apocryphal gospel, known as the Protevangelium of James or The Nativity of Mary, appeared. It included legendary stories of Mary’s parents Joachim and Anne. These stories were built out of Old Testament narratives of the births of Isaac and of Samuel (whose mother’s name, Hannah, is the original form of Anne), and from traditions of the birth of John the Baptist. In these stories, Joachim and Anne — the childless, elderly couple who grieved that they would have no posterity — were rewarded with the birth of a girl whom they dedicated in infancy to the service of God under the tutelage of the temple priests. In 550 the Emperor Justinian I erected in Constantinople the first church to Saint Anne. The Eastern Churches observe her festival on July 25. Not until the twelfth century did her feast become known in the West. Pope Urban VI fixed her day, in 1378, to follow the feast of Saint James. Joachim has had several dates assigned to his memory; but the new Roman Calendar of 1969 joins his festival to that of Anne on this day.

COMMEMORATION SS. Mary and Martha of Bethany July 29 Mary and Martha of Bethany are described in the Gospels according to Luke and John as close and much-loved friends of Jesus. Luke records the well-known story of their hospitality, which made Martha a symbol of the active life and Mary of the contemplative, though some commentators would take the words of Jesus to be a defense of that which Mary does best, and a commendation of Martha for what she does best — neither vocation giving grounds for despising the other. Jesus raised their brother Lazarus from the dead which, in John’s Gospel, is a powerful anticipation of resurrection and sign of eternal life for those who claim by faith the resurrection of Jesus. The story of the raising of Lazarus also sheds additional light on Martha. Jesus delays his visit to their home and arrives only after Lazarus is dead. Martha comes out to meet Jesus on the road, and while somewhat terse at first, she is still confident of his power to heal and restore. The exchange between them evokes Martha’s deep faith and acknowledgment of Jesus as the Messiah. John also records the supper at Bethany at which Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with fragrant ointment and wiped them with her hair. This tender gesture of love evoked criticism from the disciples. Jesus interpreted the gift as a preparation for his death and burial. The devotion and friendship of Mary and Martha have been an example of fidelity and service to the Lord. Their hospitality and kindness, and Jesus’ enjoyment of their company, show us the beauty of human friendship and love at its best. And the raising of Lazarus by Jesus is a sign of hope and promise for all who are in Christ.
