High Mass

The Solemnity of St. James | July 28, 2013 | 10:30 am

Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES •To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

High Mass followed by a Parish Family Picnic

The image on the front page is a photograph of a painting of St. James’ that hangs in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The painting was done by a Birmingham artist and presented to St. James’ Church by Fr. S.A. King of that city. In 1922, at a time of great financial difficulty for St. James’, Fr. King came from England to lead a Mission that revitalized the church. Fr. King also played a behind-the-scenes role in bringing Fr. Wilberforce Cooper to serve as rector of St. James’. This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Discarded copies will be recycled. 2 | HIGH MASS

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection John Henry Newman preached this sermon in 1836, while he was vicar of St Mary’s, Oxford. It is based on Matthew 20.22. Generous hearts like James and John, or Peter, often speak largely and confidently beforehand of what they will do for Christ, not insincerely, yet ignorantly; and for their sincerity’s sake they are taken at their word as a reward, though they have yet to learn how serious that word is. They say unto him, “We are able” (Matt 20:22) – and the vow is recorded in heaven. This is the case of all of us at many seasons. First, at confirmation, when we promise what was promised for us at baptism, yet without being able to understand how much we promise, but rather trusting to God gradually to reveal it, and to give us strength according to our day. So again they who enter holy orders promise they know not what, engage themselves they know not how deeply, debar themselves of the world’s ways they know not how intimately, find perchance they must cut off from them the right hand, sacrifice the desire of their eyes and the stirring of their hearts at the foot of the cross, while they thought, in their simplicity, they were but choosing the quiet easy life of plain men dwelling in tents (Gen 25:27). And so again, in various ways, the circumstances of the times cause men at certain seasons to take this path or that, for religion’s sake. They know not whither they are being carried; they see not the end of their course; they know no more than this, that it is right to do what they are now doing; and they hear a whisper within them, which assures them, as it did the two holy brothers (James and John), that whatever their present conduct involves in time to come, they shall, through God’s grace, be equal to it. These blessed apostles said, We are able; and in truth they were enabled to do and suffer as they had said. Who shall dare to describe the blessedness of those who find all their pledges safe returned to them, all their ventures abundantly and beyond measure satisfied? Alas! that we, my brethren, have not more of this high and unearthly spirit! How is it that we are so contented with things as they are – that we are so willing to be let alone, and to enjoy this life, – that we make such excuses, if anyone presses on us the necessity of something higher, the duty of bearing the cross, if we would earn the crown, of the Lord Jesus Christ? John Henry Newman, “The Ventures of Faith”, Parochial Sermons, vol. IV (London: J. G. F. & J. Rivington, Oxford: J. H. Parker, 1838), pp. 346-349.

Reader

A reading from the book of Jeremiah.

Reader All

The word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: You said, "Woe is me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest." Thus you shall say to him, "Thus says the Lord: I am going to break down what I have built, and pluck up what I have planted - that is, the whole land. And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do you not seek them; for I am going to bring disaster upon all flesh, says the Lord; but I will give you your life as a prize of war in every place to which you may go." Jeremiah 45:1-5 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Let the malice of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous; for you test the mind and heart, O righteous God. Antiphon Psalm 7:1-2, 9-10

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in Judea; this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.) Acts 11:27—12:3

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favour of him. And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. St. James’ News & Announcements PARISH REVIEW UPDATE (4) “Draft recommendations for discussion” is now available as a four page document for your prayerful review and deliberation. Please either pick up a copy in the Narthex, or ask the Parish Office for a copy (hard or soft – Word doc.). This is a summary of emerging recommendations from the ongoing 'consultation interviews' between the Rector and parishioners, and from ongoing conversations with the Parish leadership (Trustees / Collegium / Heads of Guilds and Ministries). Please remember: this is a draft document which will be revised numerous times as the Parish Review continues to unfold. The purpose of this document is to track the emergence of ‘commendable’ recommendations for prayer and deliberation by the Parish as interpreted by Fr. Mark. My invitation to the Parish is that by Advent Sunday the fruit of the Parish Review will be a distillation of actionable recommendations (goals) to further God’s work in our midst as described through our Parish Vision and Mission. Please speak to me, or any one of the Trustees or Clergy, if you would like to comment upon, and contribute to, the Parish Review recommendations. With ongoing appreciation for all the support and goodwill of our Parish leadership and the ready participation by parishioners. Fr. Mark.

RIP ROBERT GAUTHIER Many of you will remember Bob Gauthier, former parishioner and Warden. Bob, who had been living in Mexico for the past several years, died on Tuesday, July 9th at home with his family in Sudbury, ON. A Requiem for Bob will be held at St. James’ on Friday, August 16th at 11:00am with a reception to follow. RIP PENNY EHMANN We recently received the news that Penny Ehmann died on Sunday, June 30th. Penny was very grateful for the support of the St. James’ Pastoral Care Guild over the past few years. Services for Penny will take place sometime in early August.

St. James’ News & Announcements CHANGES TO MASS TIMES

PLEASE HELP LAC MEGANTIC

Due to recent changes in the provision of clergy at St. James’ it has become necessary to make some revisions to our Mass schedule. With regret, the Vigil Mass (5:30 p.m. Saturdays) will be permanently suspended due to poor attendance and increasing demands upon the clergy. Mass on Tuesdays will be moved to 9:30 a.m. in the Lady Chapel, for the same reasons. These changes will be effective from July 1st. I am thankful to the Wardens and the Clergy for their counsel on this matter. If you have any queries on this topic please speak directly to me, or the Wardens. Fr. Mark

PWRDF has announced a solidarity grant of $5,000 through the Anglican Diocese of Quebec, which will forward the grant to the Catholic Archdiocese of Sherbrooke to assist with relief efforts in response to the train derailment and explosion in Lac Mégantic, Quebec. The Anglican Diocese of Quebec is responding to pastoral needs, but has told PWRDF that the emergency response should be sent through the Catholic Archdiocese of Sherbrook. Bishop Dennis Drainville, the Anglican bishop of Quebec visited Lac Mégantic the day after the explosion, where he offered prayers and solidarity to the Catholic Archdiocese. Bishop Drainville spoke of “our confidence in our Roman Catholic sisters and brothers, who are able to be much more present on the ground, to determine where help is needed most.” You can donate to this relief effort in the following ways: On-line: Choose “Lac Mégantic” on the “Please direct my donation to” pull-down menu. Credit card by phone: attn: Jennifer Brown 1-866-308-7973 By Mail: Please make cheques payable to “PWRDF”, mark them for “Lac Mégantic” and send them to: The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund The Anglican Church of Canada 80 Hayden Street Toronto, Ontario M4Y 3G2

DO YOU LIKE TO RECORD VIDEO? We are looking for a few volunteers to assist with the video recording of the sermons during Low Mass on Sundays. We’ll show you exactly what to do. It is pretty straight forward. The camera tripod needs to be set in place before the sermon begins, and there are three ‘X’s’ on the floor marking the spot to make it easy. After the sermon the camera needs to be put away. It is a one-person job, but we would like to train several people to ensure that someone is always available. Starting in September, we would also like to record Formation Sessions. Please contact the office ASAP for more information. This is an excellent opportunity for parishioners who are looking for experience and references for their resume.
