A Reflection FIRST AND LAST By Malcolm Guite The first shall be the last, the last the first. You make rich havoc of our sense of place, As every strain of status is reversed. With one swift look of love, your sacred face Outfaces us. Disgrace is met with grace, And blessings fall on those we call accursed. Strive as they might, the swift don't win the race, But still the cup is full for those who thirst. What is this then, we say to one another, Planning careers and doling status out, Ranging ourselves and others on the ladder, With fanfares for the climber with the clout? Best drop our trumpets, still our banging drums And listen for your welcome, when it comes. Š Malcolm Guite from Parable and Paradox, Canterbury Press 2016 www.malcolmguite.com

Almighty God our heavenly Father, whose servant James the Apostle was obedient to the calling of thy Son and also drank of his cup of suffering: We beseech thee to keep us faithful to thee until life shall end; and grant us grace as those who have been baptized into Christ’s death, to tread with him the path of service and sacrifice: for his holy name’s sake, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. PROCESSIONAL HYMN 276 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — For All the Saints For all the saints, who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia! O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia! Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia! Alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia! Alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; sweet is the calm of Paradise the blessed. Alleluia! Alleluia (Continued overleaf)

But lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day— the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia! Alleluia! From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl, streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! Alleluia!

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah. The word that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of King Jehoiakim son of Josiah of Judah: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: You said, "Woe is me! The Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest." Thus you shall say to him, "Thus says the Lord: I am going to break down what I have built, and pluck up what I have planted - that is, the whole land. And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for I am going to bring disaster upon all flesh, says the Lord; but I will give you your life as a prize of war in every place to which you may go." Jeremiah 45:1-5

PSALM

O Lord my God, I take refuge in you; save and deliver me from all who pursue me; Lest like a lion they tear me in pieces and snatch me away with none to deliver me. Antiphon O Lord my God, if I have done these things: if there is any wickedness in my hands, If I have repaid my friend with evil, or plundered him who without cause is my enemy; Then let my enemy pursue and overtake me, trample my life into the ground, and lay my honour in the dust. Antiphon Stand up, O Lord, in your wrath; rise up against the fury of my enemies. Awake, O my God, decree justice; let the assembly of the peoples gather round you. Be seated on your lofty throne, O Most High; O Lord, judge the nations. Antiphon

Give judgement for me according to my righteousness, O Lord, and according to my innocence, O Most High. Let the malice of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous; for you test the mind and heart, O righteous God. Antiphon Psalm 7:1-10

SECOND READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world; and this took place during the reign of Claudius. The disciples determined that according to their ability, each would send relief to the believers living in Judea; this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. About that time King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. (This was during the festival of Unleavened Bread.) Acts 11:27—12:3

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. The mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, and kneeling before him, she asked a favour of him. And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." When the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 281 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Who Are These Like Stars Appearing Who are these like stars appearing, these before God's throne who stand? Each a golden crown is wearing; who are all this glorious band? “Alleluia!” hark, they sing, praising loud their heavenly King. Who are these in dazzling brightness, clothed in God's own righteousness? These whose robes of purest whiteness, shall their lustre still possess, still untouched by time's rude hand— whence came all this glorious band? These are they who have contended for their Saviour's honour long, wrestling on till life was ended, following not the sinful throng; these, who well the fight sustained, triumph through the Lamb have gained.

These are they whose hearts were riven, sore with woe and anguish tried, who in prayer full oft have striven with the God they glorified; now, their painful conflict o'er, God has bid them weep no more. It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things, Who in the multitude of thy saints hast compassed us about with so great a cloud of witnesses, that we, rejoicing in their fellowship, may run with patience the race that is set before us, and together with them may receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. DEDICATION OF THE PARISH CENTRE Priest

Peace be to this house, and to all who enter here: + In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. We acknowledge with gratitude and appreciation our presence on the traditional unceded lands of the Coast Salish People, the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. As we gather together on this St James’ Day, first we give thanks for our founders and benefactors who have enabled the ministry of this parish down the years, among them especially today Dennis Loader, and for all the clergy who have lived and served here. We come now to dedicate our new Parish Centre: may it be a place of hospitality and fellowship, learning and formation, pastoral care and support, and good administration. Blessed are you, O God, who have given us this space for our use! Blessed are you, O God, who have given us a variety of gifts for service! Through the work of our hands and the gift of this space, you enhance our ability to bring wholeness, healing and hope to one another and to this neighbourhood. Make us responsible stewards of this space and the variety of our gifts and talents, ever mindful of the humbling privilege that we bear, to be signs and witnesses of the coming of your kingdom: Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever.

God of mercy and truth, you sent your only Son to be our Saviour and Lord. He calls us together as his Church to carry on the work of salvation. We ask you now to bless us and all who will use this Parish Centre. May all who come here know the presence of Christ, experience the joy of his friendship, and grow in his love. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Now, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, + sanctify this place; For everything in heaven and on earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; And you are exalted as head over all. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES As we celebrate our Patronal Festival of St. James this weekend, we are delighted to welcome as the preacher at Solemn Mass the Reverend Dr. Malcolm Guite, Chaplain of Girton College in the University of Cambridge, UK. I know many amongst us find his poetry enriching and illuminating: several of Malcolm’s poems, as in this Sunday’s bulletin, have been printed as our Reflection for the week. Immediately after Solemn Mass, everyone is warmly encouraged to move through to the Parish Centre, where Fr. Douglas Fenton (a former resident!) will lead us in Prayers of Dedication. While there are still a few things to upgrade and complete, we have been “living into” this newlyadapted space for almost six months: it is already proving to be an asset to our ministry. There will be celebratory cake and a libation to follow.

We record our thanks again to generous donors and benefactors, especially the estate of Dennis Loader, which made this work possible, and to the Renovation Committee and Project Manager Nancy Holme for their direction and oversight of the works. Above all we give thanks for the faithfulness of those who have gone before us and for the rich heritage we have received, and ask God’s continued blessing and guidance on our parish life together.

Inform. Inspire. Invite.
