A Reflection For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. HYMN 193 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Stars of the Morning (Tune: TRISAGION) Stars of the morning, so gloriously bright, filled with celestial resplendence and light, these that, where night never followeth day, raise the Trisagion ever and aye. These are thy counsellors, these dost thou own, Lord God of Sabaoth, nearest thy throne; these are thy ministers, these dost thou send, Help of the helpless ones! man to defend. These keep the guard amidst Salem's dear bowers, Thrones, Principalities, Virtues and Powers, where, with the Living Ones, mystical Four, Cherubim, Seraphim, bow and adore. "Who like the Lord?" thunders Michael the chief; Raphael, "the cure of God," comforteth grief; and, as at Nazareth, prophet of peace, Gabriel, "the light of God," bringeth release. Then, when the earth was first poised in mid space, then, when the planets first sped on their race, then, when were ended the six days' employ, then all the sons of God shouted for joy. Still let them succour us; still let them fight, Lord of angelic hosts, battling for right; Till, where their anthems they ceaselessly pour, We with the angels may bow and adore.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the book of Genesis. Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it!" And he was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." Genesis 28:10-17

PSALM

The cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

The Lord has set his throne in heaven, and his kingship has dominion over all. Bless the Lord, you angels of his, you mighty ones who do his bidding, and hearken to the voice of his word. Antiphon Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, you ministers of his who do his will. Bless the Lord, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion; bless the Lord, O my soul. Antiphon Psalm 103:19-22

SECOND READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Revelation to John. War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world - he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, "Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!" All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, "Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!" Nathanael asked him, "Where did you get to know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you." Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." John 1:47-51

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. HYMN

Sit or kneel 326 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Bright the Vision That Delighted Bright the vision that delighted once the sight of Judah's seer; sweet the countless tongues united to entrance the prophet's ear. Round the Lord in glory seated cherubim and seraphim filled the temple, and repeated each to each the alternate hymn: "Lord, thy glory fills the heaven; earth is with its fullness stored; unto thee be glory given, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord." Heaven is still with glory ringing, earth takes up the angels' cry, "Holy, Holy, Holy," singing, "Lord of Hosts, the Lord most high." With his seraph train before him, with his holy Church below, thus unite we to adore him, bid we thus our anthem flow: "Lord, thy glory fills the heaven; earth is with its fullness stored; unto thee be glory given, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord."

A Pastoral Statement from our Primate and National Indigenous Archbishop concerning “a first release of names of children who died at Residential Schools

September 24, 2019 The wrenching legacy of residential schools is felt not only by those who survived. It lingers in the pain of families whose child died while at school. It lingers in the agony of not knowing why they died or where they are buried. It lingers in the inadequate record-keeping that does not tell the cause of death. It lingers in the neglect to even record the names of almost one-third of those who died. For a parent the death of a child in an unimaginable pain. On September 30th a first list of known names will be publicly released by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at a ceremony in Ottawa at the Canadian Museum of History. Releasing these names may bring relief at the public acknowledgement of this family pain but it may also open wounds of grief afresh. While publishing the names may honour the children, the act of doing so is another public reminder for every family of the legacy of residential schools, paid by indigenous people across Canada. The Anglican Church of Canada stands with the families and communities in sorrow. Sorrow for the preventable deaths of children in our care. Sorrow for every family that unwillingly released their child to a residential school expecting them to be cared for only to be told the child died and for most, no body ever returned.

Archbishop Mark Macdonald and I invite all Anglicans to join in prayer and remembrance in this week. Our hearts weep with all who mourn on this day. With sorrow, The Most Rev. Linda Nicholls Primate The Most Rev. Mark Macdonald National Anglican Indigenous Archbishop

Prayer for the Children Who Didn't Return Home Almighty God, we remember before you all the children - our dear relatives - who did not return home from the Residential Schools. May you remember their suffering and pain. May you grant them rest in the Land of Peace. May you surround them with beautiful and sacred love and joy. We pray to you also for ourselves and our children. At a time like this we remember we need your Spirit so very much. We pray to you, your Spirit prays through us, in the Name of Jesus, who suffered with us but raised us and will raise us with our departed loved ones. Amen. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES Have you ever seen a leaf blower used on wet leaves? I did this week as the landscapers at my building were forced to accept defeat and move to the manual method of clearing leaves with a rake. Sometimes the simplest tools are the best. Thinking about formation planning for these next few months and into Advent, I am being bombarded by emails for kits and studies of all kinds and have even found myself searching for a new daily reading guide of some kind with reflections to inspire and give hope. Perhaps it is the changing seasons, the political landscape or the violent conditions we are seeing in our neighbourhood that are driving me to look for a quick hope filled solution. We are always being sold on something that will be more efficient, get us what we want faster and tell us how to think. I thank God and the landscapers for that moment with the rake this week. I realized that if I’m trying to find some hope, perhaps the Bible is the best place to start, even though I might not find the

immediate comfort that I desire. What did I find? I found myself on a long but familiar journey with the Israelites, and something my uncle said while I was walking the Camino and having a rough few days, popped into my head. “Hold on to God’s promises.” When things are changing around us, hold on to God’s promises and remember that “for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). When world politics seems to be more about self-interest than pursuing what is good for all people, hold on with James 1:12 “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” It is hard to say “Don’t be afraid” when there is an increase in gun violence here in Vancouver. I know that is something we might normally

associate with our neighbours to the south, but here we are. How do we find hope here? We pray, that’s what Jesus did in the garden the night before he died. I encourage you to take out your Bible and slowly rake through it if you’re feeling hopeless. “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)
