Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. All who are baptized and believe Christ present in this sacrament are invited to come forward for communion. Those who are unable to receive communion, or do not yet receive, are invited to come forward for a blessing. To indicate you wish a blessing, fold your arms rather than holding out your hand for the Sacrament. When coming forward to receive, please approach from the centre aisle only and follow the directions of the attendant standing at the head of the aisle. THE OXFORD MOVEMENT The Oxford Movement of the 1830s demanded a rebirth of the life of the English Church. Its principal leaders argued for the historic and apostolic ministry; they emphasized the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist; they promoted social action and deep pastoral concern; they applied their formidable scholarship to translating the Greek and Latin fathers of the church and republishing the great English theologians and divines of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Theirs was, above all, a call to holiness, a call that changed the course of the Church not for a time only; for theirs was a call that we still are hearing and obeying.

OUTREACH SUNDAY: Witness to the World
Jenny Scott has recently asked to fulfill part of her supervised ministry course requirements at St. James’. Jenny will use this opportunity to gain more exposure around ordained ministry and have some opportunities to practice various aspects of church ministry, including pastoral care, preaching, teach and observing a variety of meetings. Jenny plans on being involved with St. James for approximately 3 hours a week and will complete the rest of her requirements through the ministry she is involved in with Servants. Jenny has been attending St. James’ for over 3 years and has been a member of the servers’ guild for most of this time. She comes from Pennsylvania via New Zealand and India. Jenny moved to Vancouver to study at Regent College where she is studying for a M.Div. Jenny lives in the DTES with the Servants community.
After High Mass we will gather for lunch to acknowledge and celebrate the various forms of “outreach” at St. James’. In our parish, we are a “witness to the world” as we reach beyond ourselves, meeting the needs of others in Christian love. Outreach is manifested in many ways - large and small, individually and by groups, locally to internationally and our goal is to recognize and celebrate them in total. A short presentation during lunch will be followed by a “walk-about” to view display tables represented by various individuals and groups who undertake initiatives at or through St. James’. St. James’ News & Announcements Meetings have included Mass, prayer, spiritual discussions related to the Rule of St. Benedict, pot-luck supper and fellowship. Over the last year, dwindling attendance led to some cancelled meetings, with the realization that a minimum of 8-10 committed participants are needed to keep monthly group meetings viable. Any parish member interested in re-starting monthly Benedictine group meetings and willing to commit to attend 8 monthly weekday evening meetings is invited to contact Brian Rocksborough-Smith at brianrs47@gmail.com. HELP CREATE THE 2014 ORDO CALENDAR! Please submit your photographs of Life in the Parish taken during any activities or events at St. James’. Be sure to include your name and contact information, as well as all the details of whom, when and where the photograph was taken. Pictures from the St. James’ picnic would be appreciated. PARISH REVIEW (5) The Parish Review focuses on three questions: What are the essentials at St. James' which we commit to maintain? What are we being called to give up? What are we being called to initiate and/or strengthen? During our annual Parish leaders' Retreat in early September we upheld in prayer and discussed the draft recommendations from the Review - these have been available to all parishioners since late July. The key findings from the Summer retreat are now available in the Narthex, or from the Officeupon request. 26| HIGH MASS
At the Parish Council (Sep. 28) all present had an opportunity to be updated and to offer feedback in response to the draft recommendations. I will continue to interview leaders through October. Two days of prayer and fasting, one in October the other around Advent Sunday, will be offered to the Parish as an opportunity for us to commit the Parish Review to the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. Any parishioner is welcome to be interviewed - just ask me. Please support our season of Review by: - attending the Parish Council; - praying and reading over the draft recommendations; - participating in the two days of prayer and fasting. The insignia of the Order will be presented to the recipients by Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, on Sunday November 10, 2013 at 4:00 pm at Christ Church Cathedral.
