Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A reading from the Book of Ezekiel. For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Therefore, thus says the Lord God to

them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and wide, I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them; I, the Lord, have spoken. Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24

Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

We are pleased that Fr. Douglas (Fenton) has agreed to come to our next Parish Council meeting on Saturday, January 24, 2015 to speak with all of us about the interim priest's role, our canonical committee and process. He also has offered the St. Paul's Seattle Parish Profile (parish from which our new Bishop Melissa came to us) as a possible model to serve as a resource for us as we begin to think about updating our St. James’ Profile. A copy is available through our St James office.

PERSONAL NEWS FROM FATHER MARK The following announcement was shared at the end of the Liturgy on November 9:

TODAY AT ST. JAMES’ Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost

COFFEE HOUR 12:00 pm in the Parish Hall EVENING PRAYER 5:00 pm in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel

OUR PARISH CANONICAL PROCESS FOR ST. JAMES’ Following Nov. 9 announcement of Fr. Mark's leaving St. James’ and his explanation of Canonical Committee formation at our Nov. 16 Vestry meeting, followup discussions were held with Diocese of New Westminster Executive Archdeacon (and former St. James’ priest) Fr. Douglas Fenton, regarding the St. James’ "Canonical Process" for finding a new Rector. We now understand that an experienced "Interim" Priest-in-Charge will be appointed to commence service with us ASAP after January 31, 2015. That person will work with us for 12-18 months during which time some parish review activities will take place prior to completion of a new St. James’ Parish Profile for posting of the Rector position, hopefully, early in 2016. 26 | THE THURIBLE

“Many of you know that I am in my ninth year as Rector at St. James’. Ruth and I have decided that now is the time to take the opportunity to move to the UK so that we can be closer to our family, and for new educational opportunities for Ruth. So with mixed emotions I need to explain that my family and I will be leaving St. James’ in January. Our last Sunday will be on January 11th. I have been offered a position in a parish in the Church in Wales. The specifics of my new appointment will be shared once I have updated police clearances in Canada and the UK. I realize that this news will be a surprise for many of you. I love St. James’ and it has been a tremendous privilege to serve as your Rector. It is essential that a transparent and smooth transition is planned from one Rector to another. I am committed to this with the Wardens, Trustees and Clergy.” (Our Executive Archdeacon, Fr. Douglas Fenton, then spoke about the transition process which included his commitment, and that of Bishop Melissa, to support St. James’ as it looks forward to calling a new rector.)

FR. MARK IS AWAY THIS SUNDAY . . . . . . preaching at the 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Eucharist, at the invitation of the Dean to conclude the 125th anniversary year celebrations of the Cathedral. Christ Church began as a “daughter church”, or “mission church”, if you like, of St. James’. One year ago exactly, on the feast of the Reign of Christ (the last Sunday of the Church’s year which immediately precedes Advent Sunday) The Rev. Canon Herbert O’Driscoll said during his sermon to commence the anniversary year celebrations: “Once upon a time when this hill was just a hilltop above the harbour there was a church to the east of downtown – still very much there and vibrantly alive – called St. James’. In St. James’ there were some people who were quite unhappy. As it is today so it was then. Anglicans always manage to assemble a bundle of things about which they proceed to disagree vehemently. Back then in those last decades of the 19th century it was about how to worship God. Some said – with as much beauty as possible, Others said – as simply as possible. The former were called High Church and the latter were called Low Church.

Sunday, November 1 (All Saints’ Day) We hope that we will have many candidates for baptism in the coming year! Please call the Church Office or speak to one of the clergy at least 3 weeks in advance of the date you select. This gives us time to arrange a baptismal preparation session for you if you are not familiar with the sacrament as offered at St. James’. We also need to ensure that the Rite of Holy Baptism is in the High Mass booklet for the Sunday you have selected. Please see one of the clergy if you would like more information about the sacrament of Holy Baptism.

Now in St. James’ the unhappy folk were Low Church, indeed so Low Church were they that they decided to up-stakes and build their own church. And so it came to pass that Christ Church rose on this hill above the harbour. As a matter of fact you will find this difficult to believe today but for some years it was the highest building around.” http://tinyurl.com/lrr9bqy

KID’S CORNER It is such a privilege and blessing to be able to worship alongside such a diverse group at St. James’ and this especially includes worshipping with all the children. We are currently preparing for Advent for children and their families:  There will be a handout for families to take home to enrich their time of waiting for Christ’s birth.  There will be an advent related activity in the children’s area each week.  Pew Activity Packs will be available for families who would like to sit in a pew with their school age children.  There will be age appropriate Bibles available for children to read. We encourage parents to bring a special quiet toy or activity for their children to work on in the pew beside you.

OFFICE CLOSURE The Church Office will be closed on Saturday, November 29. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Please let Jenny Scott know of your needs and wishes for faith education for your children so that you all may grow together in faith.

BAPTISM DATES IN 2015 The sacrament of Holy Baptism will be offered on the following dates in 2015: Sunday, January 11 (Baptism of the Lord) Saturday night, April 4 (Easter Vigil) Sunday, May 24 (Feast of Pentecost)

THE DIOCESAN SCHOOL FOR PARISH DEVELOPMENT St James' is looking to form a team of interested parishioners to attend the School of Parish Development (formally the Diocesan School for Leadership). This year they are inviting the whole parish to participate. Many of these women are young moms who need assistance at Christmas, and during the postChristmas weeks when food for themselves and their children is in short supply. Watch for an announcement from the pulpit next Sunday with all the details about bringing in your donations! The Mothers’ Union

RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women falls on November 25th. Once again this year, Mothers’ Union will be joining with other organizations in the White Ribbon Campaign to draw attention to this issue. This morning, members of the Mothers’ Union are distributing white ribbons after Mass. Please wear them for the next 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, which culminates with International Human Rights Day on December 10. Wearing a white ribbon shows that you will not participate in, or condone, violence against women. Mothers’ Union works at local, national, and international levels to raise awareness, advocate for women, challenge the underlying issues, and provide practical support to women experiencing violence. You can learn more about Mothers’ Union and the campaign by visiting the MU website: www.mothersunion.org

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control … this is our path to heaven, it is our road, so that heaven may begin here.” Pope Francis, Homily at Mass, Oct 17, 2014 http://tinyurl.com/mgcctq5

DIDO’S DID YOU KNOW? III. The Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit 1830 The moral life of Christians is sustained by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are permanent dispositions which make man docile in following the promptings of the Holy Spirit. 1831 The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. They belong in their fullness to Christ, Son of David. They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them. They make the faithful docile in readily obeying divine inspirations. Let your good spirit lead me on a level path. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God . . . If children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.

1832 The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. the tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: "charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity." COMMEMORATION St. Andre Dung Lac and his Companions Martyrs in Vietnam, 1829 November 24 There are 117 martyrs in this group and although they died at different times, they were all canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 19, 1988. Of the group, 96 were Vietnamese, 11 were Spaniards, and 10 were French. There were 8 bishops, 50 priests and 59 lay [persons] in the group. Of the priests, 11 were Dominicans, 10 belonged to the Paris Mission Society, and the rest were diocesan priests plus one seminarian. ... Andre Dung Lac’s name was originally Dung An Trân, and he was born about 1795 in a poor and pagan family in Bac-Ninh in North Vietnam. When he was twelve the family had to move to Hà-Nôi (Hanoi) where his parents could find work. There he met a catechist and got food and shelter from him. He also got education in the Christian faith for three years, and was baptized in Vinh-Tri with the Christian name Andre (Andre Dung). After learning Chinese and Latin he became a catechist, and thereafter taught catechism in the country. He was chosen to study theology, and on March 15, 1823, he was ordained a priest. As parish priest in Ke-Dâm he was tireless in his preaching. He often fasted and lived a simple and moral life, he was a good example for the people, and many were baptized. In 1835 he was imprisoned under emperor Minh-Mang’s persecutions (he was called Vietnam’s emperor Nero), but his freedom was purchased by donations from members of the congregation he served. To avoid persecutions he changed his name to Lac (Andre Lac) and moved to another prefecture to continue his work. But on November 10, 1839, he was again arrested, this time with Peter Thi, another Vietnamese priest whom he was visiting so that he might go to confession. Once again Andre was liberated, along with Peter Thi, in exchange for money. Their freedom was brief. They were soon re-arrested and taken to Hanoi, where both suffered dreadful torture. Finally they both were beheaded December 21, 1839.

COMMEMORATION St. Catherine of Alexandria Martyr, 4th c. November 25 From the tenth century onwards veneration for Catherine of Alexandria has been widespread in the Church of the East, and from the time of the Crusades this saint has been popular in the West, where many churches have been dedicated to her…. Yet in spite of this veneration, we have few facts that can be relied on concerning Catherine’s life. Eusebius, “father of Church history,” writing around the year 320, had heard of a noble young Christian woman of Alexandria whom the Emperor ordered to come to his palace, presumably to become his mistress, and who, on refusing, was punished by banishment and the confiscation of her estates. The story of Catherine may have sprung from some brief record such as this, which Christians writing at a later date expanded. The last persecutions of Christians, though short, were severe, and those living in the peace which followed seem to have had a tendency to embellish the traditions of their martyrs that they might not be forgotten. According to the popular tradition, Catherine was born of a patrician family of Alexandria and from childhood had devoted herself to study. Through her reading she had learned much of Christianity and had been converted by a vision of Our Lady and the Holy Child. When [the Emperor] Maxentius began his persecution, Catherine, then a beautiful young girl, went to him and rebuked him boldly for his cruelty. He could not answer her arguments against his pagan gods, and summoned fifty philosophers to confute her. They all confessed themselves won over by her reasoning, and were thereupon burned to death by the enraged Emperor. He then tried to seduce Catherine with an offer of a consort’s crown, and when she indignantly refused him, he had her beaten and imprisoned. The Emperor went off to inspect his military forces, and when he got back he discovered that his wife Faustina and a high official, one Porphyrius, had been visiting Catherine and had been converted, along with the soldiers of the guard. They too were put to death, and Catherine was sentenced to be killed on a spiked wheel. … The wheel … broke, and she was then beheaded. … The text of the “Acts” of this illustrious saint states that her body was carried by angels to Mount Sinai, where a church and monastery were afterwards built in her honor. http://www.ewtn.com/library/mary/catherin.htm.
