Mass - The Modern Rite
for use during Lent
Before Mass ON ENTERING CHURCH We adore you, most holy Lord Jesus Christ, here and in all your Churches throughout all the world; and we bless you, because by your holy cross, you have redeemed the world. Saint Francis of Assisi
PREPARATION FOR MASS With all my heart I desire to celebrate this Mass and to receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ to the praise of our all-powerful God, and all his assembly in the glory of heaven (think here of the season of the Church’s year or the mystery of faith being commemorated at this Mass, of the saint whose feast is being celebrated, your own patron saints) for my own good (pray for your own needs) and for the good of his pilgrim Church on earth (pray for the mission of the Church, for your own Church and for those who minister)
for all who have asked me to pray for them (especially‌) and all who need my prayers (think of any special needs in the world). May the almighty and merciful Lord grant us joy and peace, amendment of life, room for true repentance, the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit and perseverance in good works. Roman rite

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, And lighten with celestial fire; Thou the anointing Spirit art, Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart:
Thy blessed unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love; Enable with perpetual light The dullness of our blinded sight: Anoint and cheer our soiled face With the abundance of thy grace: Keep far our foes, give peace at home; Where thou art guide no ill can come. Teach us to know the Father, Son, And thee, of Both, to be but One; That through the ages all along This may be our endless song, Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
John Cosin based on Veni, creator Spiritus
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live er; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12.1

Let us confess our faith as we say,
All
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

Holy God, source of life and goodness, all creation rightly gives you praise. In the fullness of time, you sent your Son Jesus Christ, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He healed the sick and ate and drank with outcasts and sinners; he opened the eyes of the blind and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom to the poor and to those in need. In all things he fulfilled your gracious will. On the night he freely gave himself to death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.+

We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through whom you have created all things. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. In fulfilment of your will he stretched out his hands in suffering, to bring release to those who place their hope in you; and so he won for you a holy people. He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of sin and despair. Grant, O Lord, that the lips which have sung your praise within the sanctuary, may glorify you for ever; that the ears which have heard the voice of your songs, may be closed to the voice of clamour and dispute; that the eyes which have seen your great love, may also behold your blessed hope; that the tongues which have sung the sanctus, may ever speak the truth. Grant that the feet that have walked in your holy courts may ever walk in the light, and that the souls and bodies, which have tasted of your living body and blood, may ever be restored in newness of life.
