As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection INTENTION O Lord God, inspire, determine, and enable the INTENTION of my life, that it be to thine honour. Seal it as the desire of my heart, the purpose of my mind, the goal of my strength, that it continue single, clear, immutable, importunate. O Lord,

be this intention THOU: thy truth, thy work, thy love, thy glory. Let it govern my words, burn in all my thoughts, purify my dealings, occupy and redeem my time. Let it bring THEE into all my ways and the ways of those with whom I have to do; —thyself, thy light, thy salvation, thy wisdom, thy worship, thy blessing, to-day and always.

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house. They will always be praising thee. Let us pray. O God our heavenly Father, make the door of our parish church wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship and a Father’s care, and narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride, and uncharitableness. Here may the tempted find succour, and the sorrowing receive comfort; here may the careless be awakened to repentance, and the penitent be assured of thy mercy; and here may all thy children renew their strength in thee and go on their way rejoicing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN 204 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Blessed City, heavenly Salem, v. 1-4 Blessed city, heavenly Salem, vision dear of peace and love, who, of living stones upbuilded, art the joy of heaven above, and, with angel cohorts circled, as a bride to earth dost move! From celestial realms descending, bridal glory round her shed, to his presence, decked with jewels, by her Lord shall she be led: all her streets, and all her bulwarks, of pure gold are fashionèd.

Bright with pearls her portals glitter, they are open evermore; and, by virtue of his merits, thither faithful souls may soar, who for Christ's dear name in this world pain and tribulation bore. Many a blow and biting sculpture fashioned well those stones elect, in their places now compacted by the heavenly Architect, who therewith hath willed for ever that his palace should be decked.

205 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Christ is made the sure foundation, v. 1, 3 & 4 Christ is made the sure foundation, and the precious corner-stone, who, the two walls underlying, bound in each, binds both in one, Holy Sion’s help for ever, and her confidence alone. To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of hosts, today; with thy wonted loving-kindness, hear thy people as they pray, and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls for ay. Here vouchsafe to all thy servants gifts of grace by prayer to gain; here to have and hold for ever, those good things their prayers obtain, and hereafter, in thy glory, with thy blessèd ones to reign.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from First Chronicles. Then the leaders of ancestral houses made their freewill-offerings, as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of the thousands and of the hundreds, and the officers over the king’s work. They gave for the service of the house of God five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. Whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, into the care of Jehiel the Gershonite. Then the people rejoiced because these had given willingly, for with single mind they had offered freely to the Lord; King David also rejoiced greatly. Then David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly; David said: ‘Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our ancestor Israel, for ever and ever. Yours, O Lord, are the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and on the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Riches and honour come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might; and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all. And now, our God, we give thanks to you and praise your glorious name.

10 | SOLEMN MASS

‘But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to make this freewilloffering? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. For we are aliens and transients before you, as were all our ancestors; our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope. O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own. I know, my God, that you search the heart, and take pleasure in uprightness; in the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you. O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our ancestors, keep for ever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of your people, and direct their hearts towards you. Grant to my son Solomon that with single mind he may keep your commandments, your decrees, and your statutes, performing all of them, and that he may build the temple for which I have made provision.’ 1 Chronicles 29:6-19

Reader All

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

I was glad when they said to me, ”Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. Antiphon Jerusalem is built as a city that is at unity with itself. To which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, the assembly of Israel, to praise the name of the Lord. For there are the thrones of judgement, the thrones of the house of David. Antiphon Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls and quietness within your towers. Antiphon For my brethren and companions’ sake, I pray for your prosperity. Because of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek to do you good.”Antiphon Psalm 122

SECOND READING Reader

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God. Ephesians 2:19-22

ALLELUIA

A cantor begins the alleluia; all repeat it thereafter.

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. John 2:13-22

Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 302 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — They Did Not Build in Vain Tune: DARWALL They did not build in vain who founded here a church as witness to God's love amid a world of pain, for still, to those who wish to see, this place proclaims God's mystery. They built upon the rock that is the risen Lord, the one foundation laid which stands each earthly shock; that, Spirit filled, we here might raise, as living temples, prayer and praise. Those who have loved this place, a cloud of witnesses, surround and urge us on as we now run our race, and so we lay aside each sin in our desire to strive and win.

Though the horizon's bend conceals the way ahead, the footprints on the road show Christ waits at the end; in him alone our faith shall stand who waits for us at God's right hand. In every place our world is storm and tempest tossed; the flames of fear and hate are evil's flags unfurled; yet still the Spirit's wind and fire pour gifts for service in this hour. Here is our meeting place, where doubt finds grounds of faith; where hurt finds healing love, our penitence your grace; where bridging time to eternity is God the holy Trinity.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Heaven itself cannot contain thee, and thy glory fills all the world. Thou dost accept our setting apart of places for thy worship, and in them pour out thy gifts of grace upon thy faithful people. This table is a sign to us of the heavenly altar, where thy saints and angels praise thee. Here we have recalled the sacrifice of thy Son; here we have been fed with the body and blood of thy son; here our sins have been forgiven; here we have tasted the joys of thy eternal kingdom. Grant that in these mysteries we may be united with one another and strengthened for service in thy world. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. On his great love our hopes we place of present grace and joys above. O then with hymns of praise these hallowed courts shall ring. Our voices we will raise the Three-in-One to sing, and thus proclaim in joyful song both loud and long that glorious Name. Here, gracious God, do thou for evermore draw nigh; accept each faithful vow, and mark each suppliant sigh. In copious shower on all who pray, each holy day thy blessings pour. Here may we gain from heaven the grace which we implore; and may that grace, once given, be with us evermore, until that day when all the blest to endless rest are called away.

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES This weekend we celebrate the Dedication Festival of St. James’ Church, its being set apart to the glory, and for the worship, of almighty God. Our current building is the third church in the parish, and the second on this site. We are justifiably proud of its splendid and distinctive architecture, which lends itself to the ceremonial of our anglocatholic worship. It may be described as a 1930’s expression of the byzantine with traces of art deco, then in vogue: I have a print of a 1930’s style poster of St. James’, with the caption “Have Faith in Art Deco”! Rightly we give thanks for our church building, for the dedication and (considerable) sacrifice of parishioners and benefactors who paid for it to be built, for the visible and tangible witness it has given to the loving presence of Christ in this neighbourhood, and for the faithfulness of those who have worshiped here down the years. The Dedication Festival, however, directs us to examine and renew

our own commitment and dedication today, individually and together, not only to the care and maintenance of our building, but also to being a visible and tangible expression of who we are called to be, the Body of Christ in this place. Our annual stewardship renewal will soon be upon us; indeed, this Dedication Festival could be described as its forerunner, its John the Baptist. I invite you now, as I invite myself, to reflect over these next few weeks on what we can give, not only financially to maintain our building, but also of our time and prayer, as well as our money, to sustain and grow our ministry. Our church, beautiful though it is, is worth little or nothing unless we, its members, commit ourselves anew to worship, and to reflect the light of Christ in the communities in whose lives we share.
