A Reflection Prayer of Cardinal John Henry Newman God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have a mission; I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons; He has not created me for naught. I shall do good – I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments. Therefore I will trust Him.

Prayer of Bishop Fintan Monahan, RC Bishop of Killaloe, Ireland “Dear St John Henry Newman, You sought after truth and now you understand it perfectly. Shine a little of that light of understanding on us your brothers and sisters in Christ. Whenever we are becalmed and motionless in despair, Inspire us with a gentle breeze to our backs. Still our compulsion to judge others in the poorest of light. Calm all our anger and save us From the rough seas of frustration. Lead us safely to port and a share in the perfect peace of God’s Kingdom. Amen”

Entrance Rite PRELUDE Variations on St George’s Windsor — Sander VanderPloeg At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 262 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Come, Ye Thankful People, Come Come, ye thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest home! all is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin; God, our maker, doth provide for our wants to be supplied; come to God's own temple, come; raise the song of harvest-home! All the world is God's own field, fruit unto his praise to yield; wheat and weeds together sown, unto joy or sorrow grown; First the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear: Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be. For the Lord our God shall come, and shall take his harvest home; from his field shall in that day all offences purge away; give his angels charge at last in the fire the weeds to cast; but the fruitful ears to store in his garner evermore.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Second Book of Kings. Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favour with his master, because by him the Lord had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, ‘If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.’ When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, ‘Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me.’ But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king, ‘Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me, that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel.’ So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the entrance of Elisha’s house. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, ‘Go, wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored and you shall be clean.’ But Naaman became angry and went away, saying, ‘I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean?’ He turned and went away in a rage. But his servants approached and said to him, ‘Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, “Wash, and be clean”?’ So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean. Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company; he came and stood before him and said, ‘Now I know that there is no God in all the earth except in Israel; please accept a present from your servant.’ 2 Kings 5:1-3, 7-15c

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Know this: The Lord himself is God; he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Antiphon Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; give thanks to him and call upon his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his faithfulness endures from age to age. Antiphon Psalm 100

SECOND READING Reader

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself. Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:8-15

Reader All

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Reader All

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ When he saw them, he said to them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?’ Then he said to him, ‘Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.’ Luke 17:11-19

SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE

Celebrant

It is right in all times and in all places to thank and praise you Creator of all. We praise you here where the Fraser River meets the Salish Sea, where city and farm, wilderness and industry are side by side. We praise you at a time when the body of earth is broken again and again. We give thanks for our place in the story of salvation. Our ancestors journeyed with you in creation and migration. They depended on the land, were displaced from the land and displaced others from their lands. They knew you in tents and cities, on mountains and by wells, in families and in dreams, and through wilderness prophets who spoke of cedars and listened to ravens. Together with angels and ancestors, orca and salmon, bear and raven, salal and cedar we join our voices with all creation in this ancient honour song:

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

We give thanks to you for Jesus, whose first bed was a feed trough. He was baptized in the Jordan, tested in the wilderness; he traveled in fishing boats and told parables of farmers and seeds, labor and wages, yeast and bread. On the night before he died, Jesus took bread, food of the poor, the work of field and hearth, he gave thanks, broke it and gave it to his friends saying: Take and eat, this is my body, given for you, do this to remember me.+ Again after supper he took the cup of wine, fruit of the land, gave thanks and gave it to his friends saying: This is my blood, which is shed for you. When you do this, do it in memory of me.+ Remembering Jesus’ life, death and resurrection and awaiting his coming kingdom, we offer you this bread and this cup. Creator, send your Spirit on these gifts so that we may know Jesus in them and be gathered together with everyone who shares this sacred meal of justice and community. Fill us with the courage and love of Jesus, that we may strive for justice and peace, respect the dignity of every human being, and safeguard the integrity of creation. Bring us with all your saints to your commonwealth of sparrow and lily, child and beggar which is both now and yet to come in Jesus Christ our Brother.

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES This Sunday in Rome Pope Francis will canonise five new Saints, including John Henry Newman, the 19th century English priest, poet, educationalist, apologist and theologian. Newman is an important figure in the life of both the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches; he had quite a “faith journey,” with significant impact on his contemporaries, and on theological thinking into the 20th century. Born into an Anglican family, he experienced an Evangelical conversion at the age of 15: this sense of the “saving of his soul” remained with him throughout his life, though he soon moved on from this Calvinist theology. A student and then a tutor at Oriel College, Oxford, he was ordained an Anglican priest in 1825, serving parishes in Oxford and continuing as an academic. Throughout his life Newman was concerned to link study of theology with pastoral care and concern. E B Pusey was a tutor and priest alongside him. John Keble, Pusey and Newman soon became leaders of what is now known as the Oxford Movement,

beginning with Keble’s Assize Sermon in 1833 and Newman’s Tracts for the Times, laying the foundations for the AngloCatholic Revival, the tradition within which St. James’ stands. There was a rediscovery of the theology of the early Church Fathers, and a renewed emphasis on the sacraments, which transformed the life of the Anglican Church. His prayer and studies eventually led Newman to becoming a Roman Catholic, in 1845. Ordained an RC priest in 1846, he founded the Birmingham Oratory, where he exercised a pastoral ministry and continued his theological writing. In 1854 he established the Catholic University of Ireland, now University College, Dublin, with an emphasis on “intellectual culture – to reason well in all matters, to reach out towards truth, to grasp it.” In 1879 he was made a Cardinal. His theology was not solely a matter of the mind, but of the heart: “cor ad cor loquitur” (“heart speaks to heart”) was his motto, reflecting

Inform. Inspire. Invite. his love and passion for God and neighbour. Newman may be familiar through some of his hymns Lead, kindly light, Firmly I believe and truly, Praise to the holiest in the height (the latter two from his great poem The Dream of Gerontius). An Irish RC Bishop wrote this week “One can only speculate that the ecumenical movement would have benefitted greatly as a result of his participation. In declaring Newman a saint, the church recognises in him a scholar who is as much of the Anglican tradition as the Catholic tradition. St. John Henry might well be classed as the new patron of ecumenism. This would be a fitting accolade.” (The whole article, “Cardinal John Henry Newman”, in The Irish Times, Tues 8 Oct, irishtimes.com, is worth a read.) Fr. Kevin THE THURIBLE | 29
