The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favour with his master, because by him the Lord had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, ‘If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.’ When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, ‘Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself. Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. We give thanks to you for Jesus, whose first bed was a feed trough. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES This Sunday in Rome Pope Francis will canonise five new Saints, including John Henry Newman, the 19th century English priest, poet, educationalist, apologist and theologian. Newman is an important figure in the life of both the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches; he had quite a “faith journey,” with significant impact on his contemporaries, and on theological thinking into the 20th century. Born into an Anglican family, he experienced an Evangelical conversion at the age of 15: this sense of the “saving of his soul” remained with him throughout his life, though he soon moved on from this Calvinist theology. A student and then a tutor at Oriel College, Oxford, he was ordained an Anglican priest in 1825, serving parishes in Oxford and continuing as an academic. Throughout his life Newman was concerned to link study of theology with pastoral care and concern. E B Pusey was a tutor and priest alongside him. John Keble, Pusey and Newman soon became leaders of what is now known as the Oxford Movement,
beginning with Keble’s Assize Sermon in 1833 and Newman’s Tracts for the Times, laying the foundations for the AngloCatholic Revival, the tradition within which St. James’ stands. There was a rediscovery of the theology of the early Church Fathers, and a renewed emphasis on the sacraments, which transformed the life of the Anglican Church. His prayer and studies eventually led Newman to becoming a Roman Catholic, in 1845. Ordained an RC priest in 1846, he founded the Birmingham Oratory, where he exercised a pastoral ministry and continued his theological writing. In 1854 he established the Catholic University of Ireland, now University College, Dublin, with an emphasis on “intellectual culture – to reason well in all matters, to reach out towards truth, to grasp it.” In 1879 he was made a Cardinal. His theology was not solely a matter of the mind, but of the heart: “cor ad cor loquitur” (“heart speaks to heart”) was his motto, reflecting

Newman may be familiar through some of his hymns Lead, kindly light, Firmly I believe and truly, Praise to the holiest in the height (the latter two from his great poem The Dream of Gerontius). An Irish RC Bishop wrote this week “One can only speculate that the ecumenical movement would have benefitted greatly as a result of his participation. In declaring Newman a saint, the church recognises in him a scholar who is as much of the Anglican tradition as the Catholic tradition. St. John Henry might well be classed as the new patron of ecumenism. SILENT RETREAT The Decluttered Soul: Preparing Mind, Body & Spirit for the Season of Advent Nov. 24 -26 On behalf of the North Vancouver Anglican parish of St John's, Deacon Juanita and Contemplative Lay Leader Alison Brookfield are delighted to be organizing and hosting a Silent Retreat at Rivendell Retreat Centre, Bowen Island - to which the greater community are invited. This Silent Retreat will run November 24 through 26th. St John's are delighted that Leah Postman has agreed to be our Retreat's Spiritual Facilitator! Potential participants: please note there is a pre-requisite of previous experience doing contemplative prayer or attendance at previous silent retreats.
