Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex).
As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything he has given us – and He has given us everything. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from Him. Gratitude therefore takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awakening to new wonder and to praise of the goodness of God. For the grateful person knows that God is good, not by hearsay but by experience. And that is what makes all the difference. Thomas Merton, Thoughts in Solitude, 33, 1956

Entrance Rite PRELUDE At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN
347 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — The God of Abraham Praise The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above; Ancient of Everlasting Days, and God of Love; Jehovah, great I AM! by earth and heaven confessed; I bow and bless the sacred name forever blest. The great I AM has sworn; I on this oath depend. I shall, on eagle wings upborne, to heaven ascend. I shall behold God's face; I shall God's power adore, and sing the wonders of God's grace forevermore. The goodly land I see, with peace and plenty blest; a land of sacred liberty, and endless rest. There milk and honey flow, and oil and wine abound, and trees of life forever grow with mercy crowned.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Sirach. Give to the Most High as he has given to you, and as generously as you can afford. For the Lord is the one who repays, and he will repay you sevenfold. Do not offer him a bribe, for he will not accept it; and do not rely on a dishonest sacrifice; for the Lord is the judge, and with him there is no partiality. He will not show partiality to the poor; but he will listen to the prayer of one who is wronged. He will not ignore the supplication of the orphan, or the widow when she pours out her complaint. Sirach 35:12-17

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of hosts! My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Antiphon Happy are they who dwell in your house! they will always be praising you. Happy are the people whose strength is in you! whose hearts are set on the pilgrims’ way. Antiphon Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs, for the early rains have covered it with pools of water. They will climb from height to height, and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion. Antiphon Psalm 84:1-6

SECOND READING Reader
A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted." Luke 18:9-14

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES After a campaign which some commentators would say focused more on criticising personalities and “false news” than on presentation of policy and debate, the Federal Election last Monday resulted in a House of Commons in which no party has an overall majority, and therefore the formation of a minority Government. CBC Radio on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings devoted much airtime to the pros and cons of this outcome, the challenges to the ability of the governing party to implement its policy, and the opportunities for the minority parties to influence legislation as the government needs their support. The Westminster model of parliamentary democracy, from which our Canadian practice derives, is adversarial: we see this in the layout of the chamber, in which the different parties sit opposite one another, and in the title “Leader of HM Opposition.” Debate is conducted in for and against manner, one party always seeking to outvote the other.
It is not necessarily the best forum for listening, and coming to a consensus. I wonder whether Parliament may benefit from its new makeup, in that in order to legislate for the common good, the different parties will have to listen more carefully to one another, to find a way towards a common mind. The Councils of the Church have often acted in this adversarial way, as we saw recently in parts of our own General Synod. Thankfully there are signs too that we are beginning to learn a different way, learning to listen to and respect those with differing opinions, to find a way to live together. We saw signs of this too at the General Synod. Rowan Williams, when he was Archbishop of Canterbury, introduced to the Anglican Bishops at the Lambeth Conference the African way of working in indaba, respectful listening in groups, to learn one another’s stories. Canadian First Nations also have their traditions and protocols on coming to decisions by listening to

OUR PARISH TREASURER’S REPORT OCTOBER 2019 As we race towards the end of another fiscal year, St. James’ finances are in good order. As ever, St. James’ endowment, nurtured so generously by those who have gone before us, supplies a significant portion of our operating expenses. As well, special funds, earmarked for maintenance and capital expenses, help us to undertake important work for the preservation of our beautiful buildings for future generations. As well, these funds allow us to make improvements that serve the parish’s needs today. Because we are able to draw a sustainable amount from our endowment annually, there may be the thought 28 | THE THURIBLE
that the need for one’s donations isn’t quite so important. And while there have been bountiful years in the investment realm, there will also be lean ones. In this time of trade wars, environmental crises, and political upheavals, the potential for our investment returns to be lower than in previous years is real. Our regular giving, significant though it is already, needs to continue growing to keep us from having to rely too heavily on our endowment in the future. In the coming weeks, your Treasurer and Wardens will work together with the Trustees to create the 2020 budget. We humbly ask for your prayers, and for the Lord’s guidance in our labours. The monthly financial statements will receive a few updates soon to reflect the former Rectory building name change and new activities therein. If you have any questions or input, please contact any of us on the Parish Officers list. Respectfully, Christopher Orr CONCERT Vancouver Cantata Singers Wed. The broad theme again for this year-end issue considers the work of the Holy Spirit in our Parish, and explores where the Spirit may be leading St. James’. Where do we see the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit – in the life of St. James’, in our own lives, and in the life of the wider community of the Downtown Eastside? Mindful of our strong tradition of social concern alongside our rich liturgy and sacramental worship, how is St. James’ being called to serve today? Submissions
