A Reflection CHRIST THE KING Matthew 25: 31-46 Our King is calling from the hungry furrows Whilst we are cruising through the aisles of plenty, Our hoardings screen us from the man of sorrows, Our soundtracks drown his murmur: ‘I am thirsty’. He stands in line to sign in as a stranger And seek a welcome from the world he made, We see him only as a threat, a danger, He asks for clothes, we strip-search him instead. And if he should fall sick then we take care That he does not infect our private health, We lock him in the prisons of our fear Lest he unlock the prison of our wealth. But still on Sunday we shall stand and sing The praises of our hidden Lord and King. Malcolm Guite https://malcolmguite.wordpress.com/2012/11/24/the-feast-of-christ-the-king-a-sonnet/

HYMN 345 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Christ is the King, O friends rejoice Christ is the King, O friends rejoice! brothers and sisters, with one voice make all men know he is your choice: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. The first Apostles round them drew thousands of faithful men and true, sharing a faith for ever new: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. Then magnify the Lord and raise anthems of joy and holy praise for Christ’s brave saints of ancient days: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. O Christian women, Christian men, all the world over, seek again the Way disciples followed then: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. Christ through all ages is the same; place the same hope in his great name, with the same faith his word proclaim: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. Let Love’s unconquerable might God’s people everywhere unite in service to the Lord of light: Alleluya, alleluya, alleluya.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Jeremiah. Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: "The Lord is our righteousness." Jeremiah 23:1-6

CANTICLE

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, born of the house of his servant David. Antiphon Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. Antiphon This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. Antiphon You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. Antiphon In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Antiphon Luke 1:68-79

SECOND READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Colossians. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers - all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!" The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews." One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise." Luke 23:33-43

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. MOTET And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: For the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; And there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, Coming down from God out of heaven, Prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, And he will dwell with them and they shall be his people, And God himself shall be with them and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, Neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. ADVENT LESSONS AND CAROLS Sunday, December 1, 2019 4 pm Based on the old English Advent Offices, in this service most of the lessons take up the theme of the Responsory from the ancient Matins for Advent with passages from the prophets that look forward to the Day of the Lord. St. James' High Mass Choir will sing the Responsories by Palestrina, as well as the carols Es ist ein Ros entsprungen by Hugo Distler, O thou, the central orb by Charles Wood, Ave Maria by William Byrd, and Sleepers, wake! by Felix Mendelssohn. And, of course, there will be wonderful Advent carols to sing by all, including Lo, he comes with clouds descending.

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES Why has the Feast of Christ the King, which apparently originated as recently as 1925, risen to such prominence? Was it devised (partly) in order to rehabilitate the idea and the institution of monarchy after the cataclysm of the First World War? Only a few years after the Bolshevik October Revolution, and at a time in Europe after the First World War when fascism and dictatorships posed a serious threat, Pope Pius XI in 1925 did indeed inaugurate a new festival in honour of the Kingship of Christ. This was primarily intended to counter the claims of secularism by holding up the model of Christ, as King of the Creation, whose just and gentle rule is supreme. In 1970, the RC Church moved the festival from its late-October date to the last Sunday in the church year: not only was its importance in the calendar increased, but it came to be adopted by non-Roman churches, not least in the Anglican Communion. In the Church of England, after a tentative appearance in The

Promise of His Glory, it was made a mandatory celebration in Common Worship, on the Sunday next before Advent. Several theological and liturgical considerations account for the prominence of its observance. It concludes the Christian year with a climactic celebration that focuses on Christ as glorified Lord and King - a powerful reminder that praise of his Kingship is always the theme of the calendar. Many times it has been pointed out that every Sunday by its name, dominica, kyriake, is really designated as a day of Christ the King. In addition, this festival also deepens awareness of the final end of all things in the triumph of Christ: it brings the cycle of the liturgical year to an end, but looks forward to its turning again on Advent Sunday. Worship of Christ on his throne leads on to the message of Christ as Judge. The spirituality of this festival must never be forgotten or understated. No one recognised this more than Henri Nouwen in his Sabbatical Journey: "on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, Christ is presented to us as the

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

mocked King on the Cross as well of the King of the universe. The greatest humiliation and the greatest victory are both shown to us in today's liturgy. It is important to look at this humiliated and victorious Christ before we start the new liturgical year with the celebration of Advent. All through the year we have to stay close to the humiliation as well as to the victory of Christ, because we are called to live both in our own daily lives. RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS The Worldwide Mothers’ Union supports the 16 Days of Activism -- Mon. Nov. 25 to Tue. Dec. 10. This is also known as the White Ribbon Campaign. Encouraging people to talk about gender-based violence is critical in breaking the silence and stigma that victims can often face and removing myths that can keep people silent. Creating a safe and non-judgmental environment may encourage those experiencing gender-based violence to speak out. It is therefore important to be aware of how to respond and support those who disclose such experiences.

care+share care+share is a diocesan program which invites parishes and individuals to support a particular ministry over a two-year period. In the past, our own Street Outreach Initiative has benefited significantly from care+share. Diocesan Synod nominated the Urban Aboriginal Ministry led by the Revd Vivian Seegers for support in 2020/21. For details of this ministry and how to donate go to the DNW website: www.vancouver.anglican.ca/ news/care-share-advent-campaign-for-2019

Here are some general principles to consider: •Violence and abuse is always wrong and never acceptable. •The responsibility for the abuse lies with the perpetrator. •Ultimately, only the person experiencing abuse can decide what course of action to take. We invite all parishioners to wear the white ribbon if you are a woman and the moose hide square if you are a man and take this pledge: I pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls. ADVENT 2019: A COMPANION The Diocese is offering a daily Advent meditation contributed by Archbishop Melissa and spiritual directors in the diocese. Each day includes a selected image, hymn, or poem that evokes the actions of Advent: waiting, longing, anticipating, expecting, and preparing. It’s free to subscribe.
