Take the traditional launch from Pier 3 at Bowness for a short 10 minute journey across the lake to the picturesque Western shore. Here, a Mountain Goat mini bus will be waiting to take you on to the National Trust’s Hill Top (the house of Beatrix Potter), Hawkshead and beyond - even as far as Coniston.

CROSS LAKES EXPERIENCE BOAT - BUS - BOAT SERVICE
The journey to Hill Top takes approximately 20 minutes; Beatrix Potter’s house is open every day except Fridays, (however the garden and shop are open every day). The beautiful village of Hawkshead is a further 10 minutes along the road here you will find a selection of shops and cafés, along with the Beatrix Potter Gallery, displaying a large collection of her original illustrations. Quizzes available for children. The Beatrix Potter Gallery is open every day during June, July, August and every day except Fridays at other times of the year (however, the nearby shop is open every day). You may continue your journey from Hawkshead by bus to Grizedale, and (via another boat) to Coniston. Please ask for the ‘Cross Lakes Experience’ leaflet showing dates, times and connections for this boat-busboat service. Any of the above journeys may be started from Lakeside, Brockhole or Ambleside by using any of our regular ‘steamer’ and launch services (see Windermere Lake Cruises main timetable).

Leave the car behind and enjoy the lake and all the pleasures the area has to offer. Join the boat at Lakeside, Bowness or Brockhole (or your journey may begin and end at Ambleside Pier), sail north to enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery and lovely secluded bays before arriving at Ambleside Pier, then take the traditional launch service to Wray Castle (pictured and open to the public) ready to start your gentle 4 mile stroll along the lake shore path to Ferry House (located next to the car ferry), where your third boat journey of the day will return you to Bowness.

This gentle 2 hour walk is ideal for older children, younger children should be supervised. Larger wheeled pushchairs are better suited to the terrain. Well behaved dogs travel free but should be under close control, preferably on a lead.

Ambleside your Walkers’ Ticket allows you to take a break at any of the stops and catch a later boat.
*When you step off the jetty at Wray, you need to take the path left to follow the lake shore south to Ferry House. However, if you wish to visit Wray Castle first, it is only a few minutes detour along the path leading away from the lake. Retrace your steps to commence the walk.
