I remember having a conversation with Lenore Blunt during the days when she was no longer able to attend Sunday School and worship. Though she was in regular contact with members of the Ruth Class, she wanted to know from me what was happening at Winstanley. The first time this happened I began talking about the “big picture stuff,” the items that draw the largest attention in the bulletin and The Window. I probably sounded as though I was doing promotion for our various upcoming church activities. But that’s when Lenore said, No, I mean, what’s happening with our people,” and I got it. She missed the hallway conversations at church. Since I cannot have a “hallway conversation” with each of you, I want to try the next best thing and offer some random items from what is now officially Winstanley Hill. One. Fielding and Alison and Audrey moved to a house in Swansea last Saturday. He is excited to be on this side of the river and is now enjoying a seven-minute commute to church. Two. Dawn and I are learning first-hand what many of you have told us about being grandparents. Thanks to Beverly Brownlee for describing grandkids as “scrumptious.” She’s right. Three. If I counted correctly, one hundred twentyfour names are represented on our “lost list,” that is, the list of persons for whose salvation we are praying. We spend time, intervening for them during Wednesday prayer meeting and soon hope to have forty present at that prayer meeting.
Four. When you are on vacation this summer and would like to do what Lanny Downard has done, feel free to text me an update or a picture from where you are. My number is 618-401-5430. I enjoy texts. Five. Monday, August 21, is Eclipse Day. Our area will not be far from the center of a major solar eclipse. Some of us are planning to view the eclipse from Winstanley Hill. It will occur near midday. You can invite friends! Six. We have a terrific group going to Princeton, West Virginia, July 22-29 to work with Heaven Sent Ministries. But we could really use four more participants. I promise lots of meaningful hard work and fun. Really. Seven. About one hundred sixty of us thoroughly enjoyed a night of Broadway music and a wonderful brisket dinner with all the trimmings. Proceeds are helping with youth camp. Thanks to Mike Niederer and Scott Struense and a host of helpers! Eight. It is very, very hard for us to say good-bye to Glenn and Erin Knobeloch, who are in the process of moving to Lynchburg, Virginia. (Both Maeve and Tori live in Virginia.) They have served the Lord and Winstanley in incredible ways for a long time. Their contributions to the music and other ministries of the church have meant much to the Kingdom. We pray Godspeed for these, our good friends! There’s probably more, but I’ll talk to you next month. As always grateful to be your pastor, Dr. Steve

Many of our students are probably experiencing a mixture of emotions right now. Excitement, joy, and anticipation on one hand, and maybe just a tad bit of fear and anxiety on the other. Was that the case for you when you graduated from junior high or high school? This is a time for us to celebrate with and congratulate our students for a job well done. It is also an opportunity for our church to encourage them, pray for them, and help them navigate the new chapter of life that lies ahead. Speaking of what lies ahead, we are only a couple weeks away from embarking on a trip to Louisville for summer camp! I’m looking forward to an experience that will certainly draw our youth closer to one another, and more importantly, to the Lord. Our time at camp will include a missions focus as we help lead and coordinate a children’s camp. There will also be many opportunities for Bible study, worship, and fellowship.

What would you give for a chance to go home again? Find out while you read “A Beautiful Fall”, a novel by author Chris Coppernoll. He is the founder of Soul2Soul Ministries. Dr. Kirsi Royston finds much more than she bargained for when she arrives in Steadfast, Wisconsin. She plans to back out of her contract with the town clinic, but when she meets her new colleague Dr. Erickson, she realizes that her original intensions no longer match her heart’s longings. You will not be able to put down “Summer’s End”, by Holt Medallion Award-winning author Lyn Cote. Here in your church library, ancient stories bring a community together. Secrets threaten to tear them apart. One journalist has the power to expose it all. Read “The Art of Standing Still” by Penny Culliford. One of our favorite authors is Colleen Coble. In “The Lightkeeper’s Daughter”, she weaves intrigue and God’s love into a story chock-full of carefully crafted characters.
