Terrific day on Winstanley Hill yesterday! The church approved the new year’s budget, which includes funding for a staff member who will lead the student and education ministries. We acknowledged that this is, in some measure, an act of faith. But we have reason to be excited.
Volume 67, Issue 3 March 2016
Yesterday we baptized a young couple (Chris and Kendal TierneyHurst) and dedicated their child (Oliver). Then we topped off things with an outstanding concert by musicians from Missouri Baptist University! For those of you who need something to look forward to, next Sunday night we’re going to have a party! Do you have any idea how good it is to be able to post a word like that to the church family and anyone else who might be listening? (Incidentally, depending on when you receive this, the party is or was for our several new members in Garrison Hall Sunday night, February 28.) It’s true. We have much to do. We need to expand giving to match budget. We need to keep praying for the search committee at another critical juncture in the process. We need to keep encouraging each other through surgeries and illnesses and various other trials of the season. We need to keep inviting our friends to church. What a difference that is making! We need to take advantage of opportunities to include new people in the life of Winstanley. The services of Holy Week are a great time to do that. The derby races and game night on March 19 are another. Women and girls, mark your calendar for May 1, and you will have another such an opportunity. The doors of Winstanley stand wide open. I believe our hearts are open, too. Let’s be generous with our invitations, welcoming with our arms, and kind with our words. The Lord is at work, and while He can do whatever He chooses without us, I am convinced that He loves to partner with us.

With all of the crazy weather we’ve had lately, I find myself relating that to our spiritual journey. Whether we are children, teenagers, or adults, we all go through seasons in our lives. A wise person once told me that we are either in the midst of a storm, coming out of one, or getting ready for one. Because we know that our spiritual journey is just that—a process, we will go through this cycle many times in our lives. I hope that during the different seasons in which we find ourselves, we continue to lift up the name of God, spread the love of Christ, and empower the ones in which we encounter. We are able to do this because of God’s promise to never leave or forsake us (Deut. 31:6). The popular contemporary Christian song by Jesus Culture called “One Thing Remains” is another reminder of God’s never-ending love for us. The chorus says, “Your love never fails, never gives up, never runs out on me. On and on it goes. It overwhelms and satisfies my soul. And I never, ever, have to be afraid. One thing remains. Your love never fails.” My hope and prayer for our students and church is that no matter the season, we continue to love and empower people because God’s love for us never fails! Peace, Lyndsay

What It Means To Be A Deacon…
Our Sunday School class recently spent two weeks studying spiritual gifts that are to be used for the Lord’s work. We were reminded that each Christian has at least one spiritual gift given to us by the Holy Spirit. Bible scholars agree that there are about 20 spiritual gifts and without question our Lord and Savior made use of all spiritual gifts during His ministry on this earth.
My reason for bringing up the subject of spiritual gifts again was mainly to help explain “What being a Deacon means to me”. Each and every Deacon, prior to becoming a Deacon, displayed one or more of these spiritual gifts that benefited the church. He may have helped a member with needs, provided assistance at a church event, always showed genuine concern towards members but in every case he was recognized for the spiritual gift(s) he possesses. A Deacon should make every effort to use his spiritual gifts and physical talents and abilities to support our pastor and staff, provide assistance to those with physical, spiritual and emotional needs and demonstrate faithful attendance. I often think of what my Lord and Savior did for me by coming to us as a man; showed me how a Christian is to live, He suffered and died on the cross to wash away my sins and because I believe in Him He rewards me with an everlasting life. Gods love for us is immeasurable. Our entire church family needs to stay in constant communication with our Heavenly Father. Use your spiritual gifts, physical talents and abilities to do the Lord’s work. He died for us; the least we can do is live for Him.
