For instance, members do know about the comings and goings of staff members. In our last business meeting, for instance, we extended Lyndsay Williams’ service as interim youth leader through the summer. You are also aware of major events—summer mission trip, camp, Vacation Bible School and the like—because we promote them and talk about them with great regularity. But it occurs to me that there may be things to which we do not give terrific attention, either because they seem to keep going on their own or because they do not demand much prompting. One of those is the church building fund. In the year 2000, Winstanley assumed responsibility for a building loan on a project whose total cost was $1,725,348.00. Members of the church have been faithfully paying down that loan for these last sixteen years. During that time we did conduct one special pledge drive. Other than that, however, simple, regular giving has made the loan payments possible.
If you pay attention, you know that the loan balance is now $103,687.68. With the next payment in early July the loan balance will dip below the $100,000.00 mark. This represents a terrific and substantial achievement, and I want you to be aware of it. Granted, last year we assumed responsibility for an additional $50,000.00 loan, the largest part of which was to purchase two new air conditioning units, do the re-surfacing and striping of the parking lot, and re-carpet Garrison Hall. We will be paying interest only on this loan until the primary loan is paid off. However, I think it is quite remarkable that, with little fuss or fanfare, Winstanley has steadfastly fulfilled its financial responsibility, making possible ministry in space that did not exist before the year 2000. Bottom line. With gratitude to God, of course, I suggest we pat ourselves on the back and look forward to the day when, soon, the building will be paid off. Certainly this information illustrates another way you are a wonderful and stalwart group of believers and friends! Blessings on you, and thanks be to God! Grateful to be your pastor, Dr. Steve

We now know specific assignments for the Urbana mission trip June 27July 1. If you can paint, you can serve! To secure your place, contact Mel Gunter or Dr. Steve. A brief team meeting will happen in Garrison Hall on June 12, immediately after the 10:55 service.
“The Bridge”, by Karen Kingsbury, as seen as a series on the Hallmark channel. It is a story about a historic flood, lost love, and the beauty of enduring friendships. And the book is in your church library!

What It Means To Be A Deacon . . . I recently heard someone ask the question “what does a deacon do? At various times since my ordination as a deacon by Winstanley, November 7, 1982, I wondered that myself. My Certificate of Ordination reads, David Thorn, having been chosen one “of good report, full of the Spirit and of wisdom” and capable of using the office well, was set apart publicly to the office and work of Deacon. Two statements stand out. 1) Capable of using the office well and 2) work of Deacon. Deacons are supposed to do something! It is an honor to be a deacon, but it's not an honorary position. I feel one of the most important things deacons are to do is preserve the harmony of the church. That's why the early church chose deacons, to settle a dispute over the distribution of food (the early church was obviously Baptist). Over the years it has been my privilege to serve with and observe some wonderful “peace-maker” deacons. This is not all deacons do, however space is limited. Let me close by saying it is a great privilege and honor to serve Winstanley Baptist Church as a deacon. I know my fellow deacons feel the same way. I have seen them in action. David Thorn
