Believe me, there is plenty else I could say about what is happening around Winstanley Baptist Church. If you read the rest of The Window, you will discover that. As we approach the most important time in the life of the church and in the Christian year, however, I want to talk about nothing else than Holy Week. It’s not merely that we commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus, valuable as that is.

It’s not that we make an extra effort to participate and also to invite new and other people to our services.

It’s not that we celebrate Easter alongside spring-time as a season of new life and renewal. Holy Week is that time of year when we, with other followers of Jesus, walk through the last week of His life and remember very personally what He did for us. First, we exult in Jesus’ Kingship on Palm Sunday and shout our own hosannas. Come Maundy Thursday, we make sober assessments of our life on the same night that Jesus partook of a meal with His disciples and then was betrayed and arrested.

Good Friday, April 14 at 7 pm A Tenebrae Service Easter Egg Hunt, April 15 at 10 am Easter Sunday, services at 8:15 and 10:55 am “The Rose of Calvary” will be presented by the Chancel Choir with preaching by Dr. Steve
The following night we worship in a sanctuary that is finally filled with darkness, just as the world was given to darkness at the death of Jesus. Our hearts are broken as we remember and reflect. Then, we have an early celebration of Easter on Saturday, April 15, when our children gather for the Second Annual Easter Egg Hunt. We believe it is vital that our children come to learn the story of Jesus and Holy Week, too. Finally, on Easter morning we will figuratively blow the doors off with joy and triumph as we revel in the truth, wonder, and mystery of Jesus’ resurrection from the tomb. Holy Week is never complete without the services of Easter Sunday. But I tell you this, too. To get the full experience of Easter, you need to be here the preceding Sunday and throughout the week. Your life will be richer for it. Your Christian walk will be deepened because of it. Holy Week will conclude with your wanting more of Jesus in your life, and that’s how it should be. Grateful to be your pastor, Dr. Steve

As a youth leader, I sometimes enjoy the privilege of eating like a teenager. Think multiple brownies, handfuls of Doritos, and regular Coke. I can’t do this all the time and get away with it, but I was happy to make an exception for D-NOW. Our youth had a great weekend of worship, Bible study, and outreach. During the weekend, we had the opportunity to hang Winstanley door hangers in some of our surrounding neighborhoods. As we did this, we were able to engage neighbors in conversations about our church. I would like to thank everyone who participated in D-NOW in some capacity. Winstanley members were supportive in hosting the students for a couple nights, serving as leaders for the weekend, and providing breakfast on Sunday morning. Fielding

Dear Church Family, Thank you so much for your generosity this past year to the Bridge Bread Ministry. At the end of our sale on March 12, our contribution for the year totaled $3,109.00-AWESOME! That went a long way to pay salaries and other expenses. Fred Domke, volunteer CEO, said that our church was a leading giver and sends his appreciation for all our efforts. Continue to pray for the bakers, the volunteers and others that this ministry will impact in the years ahead. We were greatly impacted and blessed to be a part of it. Thanks again to all who purchased the products and to those who donated funds and supported us with prayers. In His Service, The Bridge Bread Committee

HAPPY SPRING TO ALL The deacon wives have organized an effort to support our husbands as they serve Winstanley. Community outreach was the area we were called to serve. We developed the “Mountain of Blessings.” January-mid February “Soup-er Bowl Mountain” provided the Fairview Heights Food Pantry with 300 cans of soup. Mid February-March provided needed supplies to a homeless ministry lead by Bruce Hicks. During March we focused on the Fairview Heights Food Pantry with boxed food. April 1-12 a “Mountain of Candy” will be collected for Winstanley’s Easter Egg Hunt. April 12-May 13 a “Mountain of Baby Needs” for the MOSIAC Pregnancy Health Care Center will be collected in honor of Mother’s Day. Please continue to support the future “Mountains of Blessings”-mission trip, school supplies and other community needs. In Christ, the deacon wives say “Thank You”.
APRIL SHOWERS No, we aren’t talking about spring rain. The deacon shower project should be completed in April! Shower stalls are in place. Plumbing has been roughed in. Electric changes have been made. A new demand water heater has been installed. Dry wall and finishing touches are next. We will have an opening shower or open house if you prefer in April. Bring your towels-really? Two showers will accommodate young ladies and two showers will accommodate young men. The existing two showers will be for adults only. We will “Fill The Hill” with mission groups for the Glory of God.
DEACON ORDINATION Those who were present Sunday night, March 12, will long remember the deacon ordination service for Harrison Gordon, Lance Lancaster, and Jeff Saunders as a spiritual point in the life of the church. The preceding Sunday evening they went through interrogation by the Winstanley deacon body, which acted as an ordination council. As part of the March 12 service, the church approved the recommendation of the council to proceed with the ordination. As part of the service, Harrison, Lance, and Jeff were introduced by Gloria, Sarah, and Heather, and then shared their personal testimonies. In addition, though previously ordained, but since he has just begun deacon service at Winstanley for the first time, Rick Shepard was also introduced by his wife Christine and shared his testimony. After the charge, the congregation laid hands on the three and presented them Bibles in commemoration of the occasion. A reception, given by the deacon wives, followed.
BANNERS FROM THE CHILDREN On Sunday, January 8, introducing the Fill the Hill initiative, we unfurled Fill the Hill banners in the sanctuary. They reminded us that we are filling the hill with praise, prayer, and people. On Sunday, February 26, we unfurled brand new banners, created by the children of Winstanley. Bright, colorful, and reminding us to fill the hill with Jesus, these banners have added new life to the sanctuary. Thanks to leaders Linda Spradling and Jennifer Reinard and the following children: Abigail Phillips Jordyn Struense Scarlett Lancaster Ben Browne Abby Showmaker Joshua Conway Lucas Hubbard Lilliana Rollyson Ella & T’Lesia
FOR NEW MEMBERS, FOR OLD MEMBERS WHO ARE INTERESTED, AND FOR ANYONE ELSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND! A “New Members Class,” beginning Sunday, April 23, running for four consecutive Sundays. The class will be during the Sunday School hour and co-taught by Dr. Steve and Fielding. Subjects will include what conversion means, basic Christian doctrines, life at Winstanley, and where the Christian life goes from here. You will find a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board.
