Welcome Well, September’s upon us already, slyly heralding the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, but what better place to enjoy it than here in our beautiful Cotswolds? It seems most of us who live here do appreciate how lucky we are, including TV presenter Adam Henson, who in this third issue of Winchcombe Life tells us how he loves nothing better than coming home to the hills after a busy filming schedule. Talented home-grown chef Sam Bradshaw, shares his passion for local produce and seasonal fare in our regular food feature and there’s lots of positive news from the town including impressive results in a recent Market Towns’ Survey, that puts Winchcombe above national and regional averages in many crucial business fields. What strikes me most as I compile Winchcombe Life, is the wealth of exceptional talent we have in and around our lovely town. Artists, chefs, therapists, photographers, musicians, craftspeople, caring professionals – all of whom go that extra mile to make Winchcombe and district the sought-after and special place it is.

This cheerful ‘sunset over North Street’ watercolour is by Winchcombe artist David Oatley. See more at www.oatleyart.com or catch him in the town centre, read details on page 3, What’s On.

news and Business LOTS OF HOMES Winchcombe-based British Bespoke Auctions has teamed up with Adams Estate Agents to launch a new property auction service to Gloucestershire residents. Every month, auctioneer Nicholas Granger is adding the sale of county properties to the lots sold at the monthly sales run at their Old Boys’ School premises in Gretton Road. Their first house sold for its guide price of £200,000 and on Thursday 26th September, a detached Gloucester house and a two bedroom bungalow at Innsworth, will both go under the gavel. Nicholas said: “An auction is ideal if you want a quick sale at a fair price. It often works well for trustees selling off a deceased person’s estate. We believe there’s a gap in the market for this service and so far response has been very positive.” For more details visit www.bespokeauctions. co.uk or call Nicholas on 01242 603005.

walkers are coming west Leaders of the Winchcombe Walkers are Welcome group are making impressive strides into attracting tourists from both near and far. Group Chairman Sheila Talbot, has recently returned from a two-week trip to Japan where she gave five presentations at seminars on how paths and walking can benefit the local economy. A return trip to Winchcombe is now planned and a group of Japanese walkers is due to fly over for the Walking Festival next May. WWaW is also mentoring a new walking group in Corsham, Wiltshire, who recently visited the town on a fact-finding mission. Sheila said: “Winchcombe is really getting a name for itself as a walking centre, both in the UK and internationally. We’ve just re-printed our free town map and this summer launched a new heritage trail map to encourage walkers to explore the town itself too. The beauty of Winchcombe is that we have beautiful Cotswold countryside for walking and a wealth of history, heritage and buildings dating back centuries within the town. It’s perfect.” For an example of a WWaW guided walk please turn to page 17. News and Business Extra on page 11

TOWN BUCKS UK TRENDS A survey of Winchcombe businesses, visitors and tourists shows that the town is bucking both national and regional trends, with higher rates of turnover, profitability and with the choice of restaurants and shops proving a real positive. The variety of shops was rated ‘good’ or ‘very good’ by 81% of users, more than double regional and UK figures, while the town’s ‘leisure and cultural offering’ was also rated ‘good’ or ‘very good’ by 74% of users, 19% higher than national figures. The appearance and cleanliness of the town was also rated ‘good’ or ‘very good’.’ The survey, commissioned jointly by Winchcombe Business Forum and Town Council, was carried out by ‘action for market towns’ an enterprise that benchmarks and measures the performance of town centres across Britain. The results showed that 85% of shops are unique to the town, 18% higher than both regional and national figures, with 54% of users ‘on foot’ higher than the national average of just 36%. Business Forum Chairman Roger Paine, said: “Winchcombe fares very well in many areas compared to other small, UK market towns but the results also show there is still work to be done on improving footfall and access to car parking. We know these are important issues and are areas we are actively working on in partnership with other organisations.”

REMEMBER this new club DATE

THIRTY YEARS OF FINE ART

A new social club to help those with memory difficulties has just been launched in Winchcombe. The Young At Heart Memory Club provides activities, information, carer support and advises where to go for help if you’re living with dementia, or you’re a carer of someone with the condition. The Club’s first gathering was due to be held this week (Tuesday 3rd September), and regular meetings will be held on every first Tuesday of the month. The next is Tuesday 1st October, then Tuesday 5th November at Winchcombe Day Care Centre in Langley Close, from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. Anyone concerned about their own or a relative’s memory, is welcome to pop in for free coffee, cake and a chat. For details, call Val McKay on 07717 374484 or Kelly Hennessey-Ford on 07707 787580.

Doug Bott owner of Winchcombe’s Mercia Fine Art is marking more than 30 years of trading in the town – by featuring unique works by Kerry Darlington, winner of the country’s Best-Selling Published Artist. Since setting up the High Street gallery, which also offers bespoke picture framing, valuations and restoration, Doug has become a respected stockist of some of the UK’s top artists including David Shepherd, Quentin Blake and Timmy Mallet. He said: “I don’t know where the past three decades have gone. We’ve built up a well-established client-base but are always delighted to see new art-lovers in the gallery, so if you’ve not called in yet, do come and see us. You can’t fail to be inspired and impressed by Kerry Darlington’s work. It’s taking the art world by storm.” www.kerrydarlington.co.uk Winchcombe life autumn 2013

Sweet success for self-starter Sam

A

Whether he’s cooking up a steak and ale pie or a fancy goats’ cheese star ter, chef Sam Bradshaw is in his element.

s chef at The Corner Cupboard pub in Winchcombe, Sam is largely responsible for ensuring the 16th Century inn retains its reputation for serving quality food cooked using the best local ingredients. Many teenagers take a part-time job, then move on to find their calling. Sam found his niche right away, but it has taken his own determination, dedication, time and effort to work his way up through the ranks to what is now his perfect job in his home town. “I started working here when I was just 14 as a washer-up. I really enjoyed being in the cooking and restaurant environment and I’ve gradually worked my way up so now, seven years on, I’m pleased to call myself ‘The chef,” he said. From the age of 11, Sam knew cooking was what he enjoyed and he ensured

home economics was one of the subjects he studied at Winchcombe School. “After school, I carried on working here and continued to study under a governmentfunded scheme to get my City and Guilds qualifications and achieved levels 2 and 3 to enable me work as a chef,” he said. “It was hard work but I would thoroughly recommend it if you know what you want to do and have the opportunity.”

Gooey Goats’ cheese & Sweet Beetroot Melt 1 slice of goats’ cheese • 1 inch thick 1 cooked beetroot sliced 1cm thick 2 tablespoons of runny honey • 2 eggs beaten • 2 cups of breadcrumbs 1 cup plain flour • Bag of peppered rocket for garnish (optional) • Balsamic syrup for garnish (optional)

2 Add the lemon juice and raspberries making sure you just give the raspberries a little squeeze between your fingers as you add them to the pan, then fold them in with a spoon and set aside into the fridge to cool. 3 Take the goats’ cheese slice and spread one tbsp honey on each side. 4 Place the beetroot slices above and below the goats’ cheese, using the honey as ‘glue’. 5 Take the flour, beaten eggs and breadcrumbs and place into 3 different bowls all roughly the same size. Add the goats’ cheese to the bowl containing flour and cover with flour. Place it into the egg bowl and do the same thing. Then quickly take the slice and put it into the final bowl containing breadcrumbs and fold more breadcrumbs onto it to help as much stick as possible. Repeat this process twice to make sure it’s fully covered in breadcrumbs. 6 Heat olive oil and pan fry until each side is golden brown then add to a medium, preheated oven for 5 -10 mins.

Raspberry, pear & cranberry chutney 2 pears (hard) peeled and chopped into 2 cm chunks • 1 handful of raspberries 2 tablespoons cranberry sauce (heaped) 1 lemon • Pinch of salt • 2 tablespoons sugar TO MAKE

1 Put chopped pears into a pan with half a cup of warm water and bring to the boil. Then, zest the lemon and squeeze the juice, add the zest into the water with the sugar, cranberry and pinch of salt and let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes until the pears are soft and easily breakdown.

He’s a great ambassador for any young person thinking of learning a trade under an apprenticeship scheme rather than choosing a purely academic route. By working while he studied, Sam has learnt important business and practical skills from ‘live’ experience, giving him a head start on others of a similar age with little or no work experience. As well as earning himself the title of ‘Chef,’ Sam now helps to plan the pub’s

menu and is an expert at producing quality dishes from locally-sourced supplies. Pub favourites such as steak and ale pie and stew – are hugely popular with the inn’s regulars – and are all made by Sam’s fair hands. “We use local ingredients whenever we can and all our meat is from the local butcher and is locally produced,” he said. “If you live in an area like this it makes sense to use some of the fantastic raw ingredients we have available to us and usually that’s what customers want.” Every so often, Sam tries something a bit different with Caribbean meals and curries being just a few of his ‘featured’ dishes. One of his personal favourites is Gooey Goats’ Cheese and Sweet Beetroot Melt served with raspberry and pear chutney. He’s shared this delicious starter with Winchcombe Life readers – so why not give it a try!

Enjoy

7 Place the rocket salad dressed with balsamic on a serving plate and top with cooled fruit chutney. Add the cooked goats’ cheese. Best served with a little garnish or chopped chives.

Centre’s service

is just the tonic

There’s nothing better to lift the spirits than laughter, good company and a chat – and if you’re over 60 there’s a special place in Winchcombe where you can enjoy all that...

Life advertorial

W

ith a team of bubbly staff, happy members and a programme of activities, talks and events to rival any social club, Winchcombe Day Care Centre is one of the town’s forgotten treasures – and it currently has places available for new members. Open three days a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, applications are now being taken for men and women keen to meet with others of ‘maturing years’ and enjoy some social interaction in a caring and supportive environment. If you live alone, are less active, more frail, or simply feeling a little lonely or isolated, the Day Care Centre is the ideal place to rekindle old friendships or make new ones. And if you’re worried about a relative or parent who lives alone, the Centre can provide a vital support service as an alternative to private care. Professionally-trained staff and cheerful, dedicated volunteers oversee the smooth running of each day’s activities and the welfare of each and every member is the overwhelming priority. Carol Baker, a former

district nurse and nursing lecturer, has been Managing the Centre for the past 13 years and knows what a positive impact the Centre has on improving the quality of life and general disposition of its members – and in some cases their carers too. “Nationally, we’ve a growing elderly population and Winchcombe is no exception. But sadly, the welfare of older people and the ability of our health and social systems to support and care for them, is reducing every year. “Older people like to retain their independence for as long as possible, but sometimes they just need a little help with that – and that’s where we come in. Members can attend, one, two or three days a week, it’s entirely up to them. However, the benefits of companionship, mental stimulation, interaction with others and just knowing someone genuinely cares, has a hugely positive impact on their lives.” The £24 daily rate for new members includes a range of benefits, including transport for those living within the Winchcombe catchment area and a tasty, two-course hot lunch and regular refreshments. This impressive charity was set up in 1984 and runs from its own purpose-built centre in Langley Road, complete with meeting rooms, activity areas and a kitchen. For your no obligation, free trial day, or to discuss the needs of a relative or parent, call Carol on 01242 603207 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Lend a hand

The Centre is on the lookout for caring volunteers to help out in support roles and with minibus driving duties. If you’ve a few hours to spare each week please contact Centre Manager Carol Baker for an informal chat about the Centre’s work, or call in and see what goes on for yourself! Carol said: “It’s a great atmosphere, it’s relaxed and we have a lot of fun, but above all it’s caring, supportive and safe and volunteers find it very rewarding to give something back.”

news and Business extra CALLING ALL COLLECTORS...

A second fundraising auction is being held in support of Winchcombe’s Town Hall Appeal – and local residents are being urged to turn their collectables into cash in support. The Winchcombe Town Trust in partnership with Winchcombe-based British Bespoke Auctions, is organising a sale of collectables on Thursday 28th November. If sellers agree to donate at least 50 percent of the proceeds of their ‘collectable’ lot to the Appeal Fund, Nicholas Granger will waive his normal seller’s premium of 18%. If you have a quality item you’d like to have auctioned off and part donate to the Appeal, please call 01242 603005 to arrange a free valuation.

...AND MUSIC-LOVERS

An exciting Benefit Concert is due to be staged in Winchcombe this Autumn, with a dazzling line-up of musicians and singers. The exact details are still being confirmed, but a selection of performers has already agreed to take to the stage to help raise further money for the £55,000 Town Hall Appeal. Organiser Richard Slessor, has so far enlisted the support of popular Winchcombe-based Mediaeval music group Waytes and Measures, along with well known band Puzzlejug, who play traditional Gloucestershire and Cotswold music. Reknowned cellist Nella Hunkins, is teaming up with jazz pianist Kneale Johnson from Stow-on-the-Wold, for a less formal performance and members of Winchcombe Community Choir have also promised to help raise the roof. Bringing humour to the evening will be Jeanie McGowan and a session from bluegrass-style, goodtime music group is also on the cards. Richard said: “I’m busy finalising details but we’re keen to spread the word that this Benefit Concert will be happening here in Winchcombe soon. It will be a great event. We will be publicising more information in the town very soon.”

SING A SONG OF £20,000 A unique music project – only the second of its kind in the country – is to be run at Winchcombe School, thanks to a £20,000 grant from The National Foundation for Youth Music. The grant to pay for a song writing and performance project, will also benefit pupils from Isbourne Valley and Gretton Primary Schools, who move up to the Greet Road senior school.

The funding is made in partnership with The Song Writing Charity which helps empower young people through song writing and will see a Songwriters Choir launched in Winchcombe. Members will share the stage at high profile venues such as Cheltenham Town Hall, with professional singers and musicians. Ben O’Sullivan, Director of Programmes at The Songwriting Charity will be the Winchcombe Songwriters’ Choir leader. He said: “ We know choral singing can be very useful to draw shy and withdrawn children together and to make music and help build friendships.”

do the talking It’s a powerful therapy that can alleviate stress, aid the body’s natural healing process and even increase fertility – here, reflexologist Maggie Davis tells us how.

Life advertorial

I

t’s estimated that 80% of today’s illnesses are stress-related, from insomnia, migraine, depression and digestive problems to back and neck pain, arthritis, hormonal problems and even infertility. The therapy works by massaging reflex points on the feet and hands that connect with all systems of the body to improve circulation, balance hormones, remove toxins and activate the body’s own immune system, promoting natural healing. Since she qualified nearly 20 years ago, reflexologist Maggie Davis, originally from Winchcombe, has witnessed some amazing results in treating both long-standing and recurrent disorders. Maggie, a member of the Complementary Therapists Association, said: “Reflexology is a therapy that can work very well alongside conventional medicine and in certain cases can be an alternative to dependency on

certain types of medication. It is also a wellknown natural pain reliever. “Many people turn to reflexology when their problems have become chronic and other avenues have failed. Illness can manifest itself as a physical condition even though the root cause may be a deep-seated, emotional trauma or crisis that has triggered the illness. Sometimes it’s been stored from many years before.“ Maggie said: “A regular treatment helps you achieve optimum health by reducing your stress levels to leave you feeling deeply relaxed, positive and energised.”

Home is where his Cotswold heart is Popular TV presenter Adam Henson has become a high profile figure both on and off screen. Although he now travels the country filming and presenting, his heart is still where his home is, here in the Cotswolds near Winchcombe.

I

’m delighted to have this opportunity to write a column for the new Winchcombe Life magazine as I am passionate about promoting this part of the Cotswolds. It’s where I grew up, where my father Joe established the Farm Park back in 1971 and where my family and I still live and farm today. “Like many of us living and working in this beautiful area, I feel very privileged to do so. Growing up in a Cotswold farming family meant there was a strong community spirit, warmth and friendliness and these are all values we put into practice at the Farm Park today. “Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to see generations of local families returning to the Park, the parents having been brought here as children themselves and now bringing their own offspring. I think it’s very important that from an early age, children learn about the land, the countryside and animals and this is a very large part of what we do here today.

the land and our animals need to be nurtured, protected and cared for. It’s a legacy my father started and one that, with the fantastic team here, I’m proud to continue – and I hope you will come and join us in that journey.” The Cotswold Farm Park is currently running its educational Sheep History Show and a new Farm Lab area opens this month, (September). This year the Farm Park will remain open until December 22nd with a daily nativity and special undercover attractions. Visit www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk 01451 850307 “When filming allows I spend as much time as possible at the Farm Park, meeting new visitors and ‘old’ regulars and getting involved. Helen’s new career

Blossoms It’s less than four years since Winchcombe-based botanical ar tist Helen Campbell first picked up a paintbrush and bought herself some ‘cheap watercolours.’

S

he then read a few books, attended a couple of workshops and in no time at all, her natural and self-taught talent and keen eye for detail shone through – and now her work is gaining recognition nationwide. A year ago, she gave up her full-time job at a Cheltenham law firm, to devote her time to painting professionally and she has never looked back. Her only regret is that she didn’t do it sooner! Helen said: “I used to go to art exhibitions and come out buzzing, but then I just started painting one day and I had that ‘light bulb’ moment. I’m now doing what I love every day and feel very lucky to have the opportunity to paint professionally. So much has happened for me in such a short time. It can be hard work, but I wouldn’t change it for anything.” This year her work was ‘passed’ by the Royal Horticultural Society, giving her permission to enter at least six new pieces to be considered for an RHS Gold Medal. To qualify for entry Helen entered four of

her apple paintings which were judged on their botanical and colour accuracy by an RHS panel of artists and botanists. Now she has to produce six more pieces on a theme of her choice, which she plans to submit next spring in pursuit of the coveted and prestigious RHS gold medal. Helen said: “I was delighted to pass the selection process, as I know the criteria for entry is very tough. To win an RHS medal would be fantastic. It’s ‘The’ achievement for botanical artists and is something you are awarded for life and brings huge credibility.” And if that wasn’t enough, Helen’s stunning botanical paintings have also been chosen by a national publisher to appear on a series of fine art greetings cards and will go on sale next year. The pieces may also be used on posters and canvasses to grace the walls of homes and offices across the country. Another of Helen’s ongoing projects is a commission for Westons Cider. She is busy putting paint to paper to record more than a dozen of their finest apples and pears, both as blossom and fruit. Once complete, her work will take pride of place at their Much Marcle head office near Ledbury, Herefordshire. “I always work from photographs I’ve taken myself, either in situ in orchards or gardens, or here in the studio. I have developed my own techniques for building up watercolour layers, starting with the lightest first. To produce an accurate painting is about really looking at your subject and noticing detail, light and things many people would not normally take in. Building up the layers requires a lot of

patience as each must dry thoroughly. You become very engrossed and hours can fly by before you know it!” On Monday 9th September Helen is running her first workshop at Winds of Change Gallery, High Street, Winchcombe for up to 7 students. The day-long session from 10 am to 4 pm, costs £65 per person, to include lunch, refreshments and materials and will focus on ‘seeing’ your subject, application techniques and how to blend and soften to give picture depth and a 3D effect. To book your place, contact Jane Smoczynski at Winds of Change Gallery on 01242 603836. Private tuition with Helen costs £120. “I’m happy to see both beginners and more experienced artists, as my techniques can be used at all levels. Art is a great hobby for anyone. It’s absorbing and relaxing and I can thoroughly recommend it,” Helen said.

A circular walk along the drive to Sudeley Castle before ascending the side of the valley up to St Kenelm’s Well. Fine views of Winchcombe and the surrounding countryside. Distance: 4 miles/6.4 kms Duration: 2 hours Difficulty: Moderate Ascent: 125 feet/38 metres Start/finish: Back Lane car park £1 all day. Toilets 20p in car park. Picture copyright Robert Talbot.

Summary: ST Kenelm’s Well

Leave Back Lane car park via the far corner access into Cowl Lane. Turn right and follow the road to the High Street. Turn right and after approx 60 metres turn left into Vineyard Street. Cross the River Isbourne, head up the slope and where the road bends to the right, keep straight ahead to enter the grounds of Sudeley Castle, passing the castellated Almsbury Lodge on your left. Follow the main driveway, crossing the lake by the bridge and continue gently uphill to a gate on your right A. Go through, keeping the play area on your left and head for a metal kissing gate. Go through the kissing gate and ahead of you the path splits. Take the left hand path heading for the far left hand corner of the field (The Home Parks). Go through a kissing gate and turn left B. In 20 metres, pass through a kissing gate and walk ahead with trees and a farm track to your left. In 200 metres, follow the field boundary to the right and again after a further 200 metres, turn left through a kissing gate to walk gently uphill towards a house. At the top, turn right onto a tarmac lane and immediate left along the signposted Wardens Way until you meet a tarmac lane. Turn left, and follow the lane uphill. Where the hill levels out, turn left over a stile and walk towards woodland. Here, climb two stiles in quick succession and enter the woodland. Follow a clear path for about 200 metres, then climb a stile on your left to enter a field C. Walk along the woodland edge to a road, turn left and walk downhill to Sudeley Hill Farm. Here, turn sharp right through a kissing gate and walk up the field and over a stile. Keep straight ahead and meet a track;

bear left and pass the stone building housing St Kenelm’s Well. Continue ahead to climb a stile by a metal gate, then walk uphill towards a gate on the horizon to the right of woodland and a pig pen. Shortly before the top of the hill by the pig pen D, turn left over a stile onto an enclosed path. Climb two further stiles and emerge into a field: keep close to the tree line on your right, past a way marked post and drop down to a stile on your left after about 400 metres. Continue downhill keeping close to the hedge line on your right. Cross another stile and admire the views of Winchcombe below and the surrounding countryside. Turn right and continue downhill, keeping close to the fence on your right, to a stile in the bottom corner of the field. Climb this and continue on downhill, pass through a large gap in the hedge to your right and walk towards a kissing gate to the right of a large oak tree. Walk about 75 metres to cross a footbridge in the right hand hedgerow. Keep straight ahead towards a gate, passing to the left of a telegraph pole in the field. Turn right to walk along the tarmac road.

After approx 200 metres, turn left at a kissing gate signposted Gloucestershire Way and cross the field bearing left. Go through a kissing gate and walk along an enclosed path between houses to a road.w Turn right over the bridge and up Castle Street to arrive in the centre of Winchcombe. Turn left and Cowl Lane which leads to the car park is 40 metres ahead on your right.

Expert tips to sell your home If you’re about to put your property on the market or it’s not yet sold, Adrian Barnes, Managing Director of Adams Estate Agents and Residential Lettings in Winchcombe, offers some expert advice on how to help secure your buyer this Autumn.

Life advertorial

F

irst impressions really do count, so presenting your property at its best is a must at every viewing. Ensuring your home is clean and tidy, de-cluttered and welcoming, may tip the balance for buyers torn between two properties. Adrian, pictures above, has more than 30 years experience in selling property. He said: “It may sound obvious and common sense, but presenting your home in its best possible light can make the difference between securing or losing a sale. “A property should be spotless inside and out with clean windows, a tidy garden and even a clean and polished front door. It’s also important to keep all your rooms as clutterfree as possible to emphasise the feeling of space. It will also give you a head start when you do come to move.” Get any general repairs done no matter how small. Leaking taps, cracked tiles,

broken floorboards or lopsided cupboard doors really can give your viewers a negative overall impression of a property that’s falling apart – even if it isn’t! Keep your home smelling fresh and when a potential buyer is due, open windows in the summer, or ensure it’s warm, well lit and inviting in the winter and free from lingering cooking or animal smells if you have pets. If you’re a dog owner ensure your pet is taken out for a walk during viewings, as not all potential buyers enjoy a boisterous waggy-tail welcome! Ensure all rooms are shown off to their best potential and furnished for the purpose. Little touches such as fresh

flowers can make a huge difference. Adrian said: “Ideally, estate agents do prefer to manage viewings themselves, with the property owner either absent or keeping a low profile. Some potential buyers can feel more comfortable and relaxed if the owner isn’t around and will often take more time and be more open with questions and thoughts when they are just dealing with the Agent’s sales negotiator.” “We’re also very experienced in emphasising all the positives about your property and in dealing with negotiations, so again, our advice is wherever possible, leave it to us as your enthusiastic agent to carry out your viewings.” Adrian is a Fellow of the National Association of Estate Agents and a Member of the Association of Residential Letting Agents. He can be contacted at the North Street office on 01242 603601.

Dani, LCPH, MARH, RHom, said: “Homeopathy is a system of medicine that can really work. It can help people to get well and stay well and empowers patients to take more responsibility for the control of their own health. “As with many complementary therapies, it treats a person holistically. Policing in response to the badger cull in Gloucestershire Many people will be aware that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is allowing a pilot cull of badgers to go ahead in parts of west Gloucestershire at any point from 1 June 2013. We understand this is a sensitive issue and we want to make sure that you are clear about the responsibilities of the police. The proposed pilot cull is a Defra-managed issue under licence from Natural England and it will be up to them and the operating company carrying out the cull to decide where and when it takes place. Our role is to provide a police response to the cull and any incidents around it. This is called Operation Themis. It will be neutral and independent of the cull itself. We will be impartial, even-handed and fair to everyone, whatever their views, interest or involvement in the pilot scheme. We will:
