skills to share
Life in the wild
A new Skill Share Group has been launched for residents to pass on their skills and knowledge to others in support of the community. Free events are being planned each month, focussing on the sharing of crafts, cooking, gardening, DIY and sports skills. It is hoped the WSS can partner town clubs and organisations on future initiatives. Anna Telling, one of the Skill Share members, said: “We have supporters with a variety of skills including experience in sustainability and community projects. The Group’s aim is to support local people, producers and the environment. Themes include sharing local knowledge and produce, encouraging people to buy local and live locally and reducing waste and environmental impact. We want projects to be fun too and build new bonds in the community.” Launching a ‘Made in Winchcombe’ label and creating a local food map are two projects the group has in the pipeline. To share your skills or find out more, email info@ttwinchcombe.org.uk See our What’s On page 7 for a Skill Share event on Saturday 7th December.

The Ofsted registered group, also a registered charity, is run by local mums for families in the surrounding area; youngsters from other towns and communities are also welcome. The group was launched in 1973 at the Village Hall, but last year moved to its new premises in The Old School Building in Church Lane. To celebrate the anniversary, committee chairperson Monica Farthing baked a delicious birthday cake for members. The Playgroup offers daily sessions for independent children aged between two and five from 9am until 3.30pm. Children can also attend just morning, or afternoon sessions and a lunch club. Stay and play sessions are run for pregnant mums and those with babies and toddlers. Females in the Winchcombe area are being invited to get on their bikes as part of a new cycling initiative being run by women for women. The campaign by British Cycling, entitled Breeze, is aimed at getting more women cycling. The rides are led by two specially-trained Breeze Champions, Jenny Mackleworth and Catherine Jenny Mackleworth, left, and Catherine Davies. Davies, both volunteers from Greet. Jenny said: “The group is aimed at women who may not have cycled for quite a while and may even think they couldn’t keep up. But the aim of this is to have a gentle, enjoyable, sociable cycle ride in a friendly group. We take rides on the first Sunday of each month starting at 9.15am at the Harvest Home and are also opening this up to mums with daughters over the age of 13. We also do rides in the week, but these are more ad hoc.” The rides usually cover 15 to 20 miles and last about two to three hours with a refreshment break. Jenny and Catherine are fully insured by British Cycling and can each take up to eight riders. The rides are free but helmets must be worn. Visit www.breezebikerides.com or www.winchcombecc.org for more details, or call Jenny on 602286.

he Yuletide event will see nearly 40 stallholders selling goodies and gifts in both North Street - and in a festive first – on Abbey Terrace too, plus there’s a sparkling array of entertainers lined up to delight the crowds. The Festival opens at 5pm next Tuesday, 3rd December and organisers from Winchcombe Business Forum promise a town buzzing with Christmas cheer, as shops, pubs, community groups and organisations join forces for the spectacular seasonal celebration. Christmas market co-ordinator, Jane Royle from Cotswold Eye Care, said: “We’ve more stallholders than ever offering a great range of quality goods, many of them produced locally. We’ve everything from speciality seasonal food, jewellery, cakes, cards, metalwork and pictures, to chocolates, glassware, wooden gifts, toys, scarves and more.” There’s also a three-hour programme of
magical Christmas entertainment taking place in and around the town centre and on Abbey Terrace. Santa Claus is this year arriving at the event via fire engine, just after 5pm and will meet youngsters in his new grotto in The Guide Hall where local brownies are hosting special activities to amuse children while they wait. Retailers are also running an odd one out competition for youngsters and throughout December the Business Forum is running a Christmas Trail contest for primary school children with a £25 gift voucher prize. Free entry forms are available from The Coventry in the High Street. The Festival starts a series of late-night Tuesday shopping evenings that follow on December 10th and 17th, from 5pm – 8pm. Lady Jane’s Christmas pudding recipe Makes two puddings, each serves six
Fab, festive food from a true lady!
F
The proof is in the pudding – and that’s why Winchcombe’s Lady Jane’s Tea Room is always bur sting with happy diner s.
or fulsome festive fayre and a seasonally-led, all-year-round menu, this pretty Hailes Street eating house provides quality, traditional, home-cooked food at an affordable price. From December 1st, owner Nicky Ball launches her mouth-watering Christmas menu. So whether you’re craving a hot cuppa with a melt-in-the mouth mince pie, a warming winter lunch such as steak pie, or the full on Christmas Roast Special, Lady Jane’s can make your Christmas dining dreams come true! All Lady Jane’s food is produced by Nicky on the premises and she prides herself on offering traditional, very British, home-cooked food using local produce wherever possible. Some of her most popular hot dishes include Faggots in gravy, braised oxtail, steak pie, Welsh rarebit and cottage and fish pies. Her lighter lunches such as quiche, freshly-prepared sandwiches and home-made soup are always in demand, while her superb afternoon cream tea is one of the best, (and personally recommended by the editor!) Nicky said: “Many of the dishes we offer are quite old-fashioned, but are very popular and always sell-out. They’re the sort of meals that are flavoursome and wholesome, but are too much trouble and take too long for people to cook at home.” To mark the festive season Nicky is now taking bookings for two and three course Christmas dinners, on Sundays throughout December, (£23 and £26 respectively). Her
menu includes four delicious choices for starters, mains and deserts, with mince pies and coffee to finish. If you’re free on a Wednesday, Lady Jane’s has a special deal on a two-course Christmas roast dinner (or fish alternative), followed by Christmas pudding, with tea or coffee to finish, all for a very affordable £9. And if you can’t get enough of Lady Jane’s Christmas fayre, Nicky is now taking orders on her tasty Christmas puddings, mince pies and cakes so you can continue to enjoy her yummy Yuletide goodies at home. (Last orders December 15th). Next year Nicky and her five-strong, part-time team, which includes assistant cook Tony Stewart –chef at the town’s former George Hotel – are celebrating their tenth anniversary at Lady Jane’s and are planning some bumper birthday celebrations in the dining department. Nicky said: “We’ve some great ideas in the pipeline but you’ll have to wait until the New Year to find out what they are – all I’m saying is make sure you read the next issue of Winchcombe Life!” Festive Fayre to order Christmas cakes from £20 Christmas puddings from £10 Mince pies £4.50 per half dozen £8 per dozen Contact Lady Jane Tea Rooms:

150g currants • 150g raisins 150g sultanas • 150g read-to-eat dates, chopped 150g ready-to-eat prunes chopped 1 carrot, peeled and grated 100ml Grand Marnier • 100ml Guinness Finely grated zest and juice of 1 orange 175g butter, softened, plus extra to grease 175g molasses, or dark muscovado sugar 3 medium eggs, beaten • 75g SR flour 1tbsp ground mixed spice • 150g crustless, fresh white bread • 75g blanched almonds, toasted • 50g pecan nuts, toasted TO MAKE
1 Put all the dried fruit into a bowl with the grated carrot, Guinness, Grand Marnier and orange juice. Stir and leave for at least an hour. 2 Grease two 1 litre pudding basins 3 Put the butter, sugar and orange zest into a large bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs, adding a little flour if the mixture starts to curdle. 4 Sift together the flour and mixed spice. 5 Pulse the bread into crumbs in a food processor and set aside, pulse the nuts briefly to chop roughly. 6 Using a large metal spoon, fold the flour, breadcrumbs and nuts into the creamed mixture. 7 Add the soaked fruit, alcohol and stir to combine. 8 Divide the mixture between the two pudding basins, smooth the surface and loosely place a grease proof paper disc on top of the mixture. Cover the top of the basins with silver foil loosely secured. 9 Cook each pudding in a steamer for 8 hours, remember to top up with boiling water. 10 Once cooked and cooled, the puddings can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to a month. To reheat a pudding, steam for two hours, once the heat is turned off the pudding will remain hot in the steamer for up to one hour. Upturn the pudding onto a plate, decorate with a sprig of holly and serve hot with cream, brandy butter, custard or all three! Nicky’s top tip: For best results soak fruit overnight in the alcohol. If you prefer not to use alcohol Lady Grey Tea is an ideal alternative giving flavours of orange and bergamot.

news and Business EXTRA Town brings history alive
Winchcombe Abbey ‘rebuilt’ A wooden replica of Winchcombe Abbey has been skilfully created after years of research and work, by a dedicated team of volunteers led by the Friends of St Peter’s Church. It’s the first time a model has re-created this once rich and famous Benedictine Abbey that was founded in 798 and became the capital of Mercia, an Anglo Saxon kingdom. The Reverend John Stevinson trawled historical manuscripts and records and pulled out key documents that built up a picture of the construction, appearance and layout of Winchcombe Abbey. Data from a geophysical survey enabled the actual size and scale of the Abbey to be established in relation to St Peter’s Church. Relating this information to other noted Abbey structures, retired architect Ronald Green produced a series of illustrations and drawings, that gradually revealed Winchcombe Abbey in all its glory. From his drawings a scaled-down wooden model was produced in brown oak by retired manufacturing engineer, Mac Yates. Mac worked seven-days-a-week for six weeks on the Abbey model, which is now on permanent show in St Peter’s Church. The project was spearheaded by Mr John Hayter, a Friends’ Trustee and funded by the Friends. The display also includes impressive, wall-mounted information boards that detail the history of St Peter’s Church and the Abbey through the ages. The model can be viewed during daily church opening times.
Centuries of fascinating Winchcombe history will be brought vividly to life next Spring, in a dramatic and spectacular event being staged in the town. Steps Through Time, The Story of Winchcombe, promises to be an enthralling, informative and dazzling display of the town’s history, portrayed as never before. This mammoth event is the culmination of two years’ work, led by Christine Lainé, Peter Teague and Mike Rafferty. It will be staged in St Peter’s Church on the evenings of Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th March. The two-act production, lasting about two hours, will move from pre-Roman times through to the evacuees of 1944 and will involve dozens of local people of all ages. Christine said: “We want to tell the story of Winchcombe’s wonderful history in an inspiring and interesting way. We have been working on this for some time and for me it’s the realisation of a long-held dream. This is not a conventional production, as the event will be performed ‘in the round’ so the audience will be well and truly in the thick of the action. It will be quite something.” An array of colourful local characters is being lined up to entertain and delight, including people like Ralph Boteler, who helped to rebuild St Peter’s Church; Emma Dent of Sudeley, a famous town benefactor; and local builder John Oakey, who will recall early twentieth century life in his own lively style. There will be appearances by soldiers, monks and townsfolk, who will perform a series of mournful, humorous and ironic rhyming couplets. The script is supported by a spell-binding mix of music, dancing, lighting and sound effects. Tickets will be on sale in the New Year. For details, visit www.fostpw.org,uk or email steps@winchcombeparish.org.uk for latest information.
Tower to light up the town Plans are under way to floodlight St Peter’s Church tower in time for the town’s Christmas festivities – in early December. For the first time in more than ten years, the impressive 90 feet high tower, is set to be floodlit and the public is being invited to ‘sponsor’ a ‘night of light’ in honour, or memory of a loved one, friend, or to celebrate a special occasion. For just £5, sponsors can complete details of their dedication or celebration which will go on display at St Peter’s Church. The floodlighting plans have been approved by The Diocese Advisory Committee, English Heritage and supported by Winchcombe Town Council. Mrs Christine Lainé, Chairman of the Friends of St Peter’s, said: “We’re using
solar panels and although the installation was expensive, the running costs are now very low.” The project was funded by a legacy from the late Miss Phyllis Kind, who lived opposite St Peter’s in Church Cottage about 100 years ago and attended church socials until well into her 90s. Sponsor cards are available from the church, The Coventry, in the High Street and the Top Shop in Binyon Road. Winchcombe life WINTER 2013

Combine cold weather, dark nights, Christmas and New Year (01242) 222722meals www.charleslear.com parties and for most people winter means one thing – weight gain! Whatever your age it’s easy to put on a few pounds at this time of year, but for many unless you’ve strong resolve, a target date or support from others, it’s much harder to lose it. And as the years progress extra weight becomes harder to shift. Slimming clubs, crash diets, gyms and fitness regimes can work well, but sometimes once the ‘campaign’ has stopped the weight slowly creeps back on. But – it doesn’t have to be so. Winchcombe fitness instructor Clare Bayley, is one of a growing number of people, including weight loss specialists and personal trainers, who say losing weight is just a matter of going ‘back to basics.’ Clare said: “It’s actually very simple. The reason we put on weight is because we’re eating processed carbohydrates and sugary foods which to our bodies are actually toxins. Sugar is one of the most toxic substances around, and if you buy and eat processed foods they will invariably contain high levels of
either sugar, and/or unnatural fats. Our bodies are just not made to deal with these and the result is weight gain.” In her 28 day Clean Eating Plan that begins in January, Clare offers support, encouragement, recipe ideas, motivation and information on which foods you should be eating and which you should be avoiding. Her ‘Back to Basics’ programme includes only fresh food; lots of vegetables; meat and fish; eggs; herbs and spices; nuts and seeds; water, fruit teas and protein shakes. The aim is to rid the body of toxins and eat only natural, wholesome and ideally organic food. Clare said: “It’s not a diet as such, it’s about changing your eating and drinking patterns and really focussing on what you’re putting into your body. The first few days can be tough as you’re body may be addicted to caffeine, sugar and processed food that you will crave, you may feel a bit rough. But if you keep your resolve the cravings will pass and
those who follow the plan properly and don’t cheat will lose weight. You’re also likely to have more energy and feel generally healthier.” Clare’s Clean Eating Plan begins on Monday 13th January, runs for 28 days and costs £35 per person. Once registered you join a private Facebook page where full support and information is provided. NB: If you’re a diabetic or have any medical conditions always consult your GP before beginning any new diet or fitness programme.

Poets in motion It star ted out as a simple workshop at the Winchcombe Festival of Music and Ar ts – a session held to encourage, enlighten and inspire.
A
nd inspire it certainly did. So successful was that first two-hour workshop that now, two years on, The Winchcombe Poets are impressing other county writers on the Gloucestershire poetry circuit with their richly resonating words of wisdom. At recent readings events with Cheltenham Poetry Society and at the Gloucestershire Civic Trust, the Winchcombe Poets proved a voice to be reckoned with. Their work was described as profound, impressive, and of a standard well beyond novice status. Helena Cavan, a professional composer and poet from Greet, organised that first workshop that brought the group together, accompanied on the day by Chris Haslam. She says she is thrilled and humbled by the talent and professionalism of the Winchcombe Poets. “We are all very different voices, with very different subjects to air,” she said, “but the group has a great culture of honour and respect for each other and it’s the variety of themes and styles that’s making our readings so popular.”

Now stooped, I have my own stream ere Endlessly busying down from somewh , to somewhere else thoughts, over cul-de-sacs of weeds and green . a friendly snake in Cotswold grasses
One year, choruses of waves rose to flooding climax as a lake exiled by an impervious water table. down, Memories from raided gardens floated ery, pott and chairs and footballs, planks al soup humming brown tunes in the primordi but unable to restrain the life which rested till September, when damsons, apples and plums s flood fell from appropriate trees in generou like a thousand apologies. all the seas, Like all the rivers of the world, and roar, my ageless stream will chatter on or n speaking of weathers beyond the moo , eard unh , een uns life of and modes and not yet understood.
The group consists of six poets: Helena, who acts as co-ordinator; Peter Firth, a retired BBC producer and Bishop; Chris Haslam, an English teacher at Dean Close School; Gordon Ottewell, a retired author; Briony Smith, storyteller; Winchcombe poets Peter Firth and He lena Cavan Margaret Collins, a healthcare professional and the newest member, Tony Davies. The group meets monthly to read, critique, discuss and comment on each other’s poetry and since 2011, both Peter and Chris have produced their own poetry collections, with Peter alone penning more than 150 poems since that first meeting – wondering why he waited until the grand age of 82 to return to writing poetry! Helena said: “Peter wrote poetry as a young man but hadn’t written for decades until joining the workshop. He’s now tapping into a lifetime’s experience and wisdom to produce some really profound, cultured and inspired poetry. It’s an honour to have him in our group and we look to him as our consummate father figure.” By contrast, Briony Smith and Margaret Collins had never written a single poem before joining the group, but are impressing fellow writers with their considered and reflective work. Helena said: “We each take our poetry seriously. There’s an unspoken professionalism and standard. Everyone sets their own challenges, depending on their experience and background, and no one is trying to prove anything. The dynamic of the group feels right and from the encouraging feedback we’re getting, our audiences seem to think so too!” You can enjoy the work of The Winchcombe Poets on Friday 17th January 2014, at St Nicholas’ RC Church in Chandos Street, (time to be confirmed). They will be joined by members of the Cheltenham Poetry Society for a combined poetry and music programme called ‘Into the Heights.’ Tickets will be available on the door. • Helena’s poetry work is available in The Emporium, North Street.

Stride out to Spoonley Wood
Bear left through a metal gate D and continue along the path on your right, soon passing a small reservoir on your left. Where a track bears sharp right towards farm buildings, pass through a metal gate on your left and continue ahead in the same direction but with the hedgerow now on your right hand side. Follow the hedgerow and go through a kissing gate, continuing until you reach a track. Cross the track and go through a kissing gate in the hedge, to enter a field with Sudeley Castle visible in front of you. The path bears left. Walk across the open field to pass the castle on your right. Upon reaching the main driveway bear left, to retrace your steps back into Winchcombe and the start of the walk.
Points of interest
Summary:
A scenic, circular walk from Winchcombe to Spoonley Wood, visiting the remains of a Roman villa with a mosaic floor. Distance: 5.3 miles/ 8.6 km Duration: 3 hours Difficulty: Moderate Ascent: 460 feet/140 metres OS maps: Outdoor Leisure 45, Landranger 163 Start/finish: Back Lane car park £1 all day. Toilets 20p in car park. Refreshments: Sudeley Castle and Winchcombe.
Description
Leave Back Lane car park via the far corner access into Cowl Lane. Turn right and follow the road to the High Street. Turn right and after approx 60 metres turn left into Vineyard Street. Cross the River Isbourne, head up the slope and where the road bends to the right, keep straight ahead to enter the grounds of Sudeley Castle, passing the castellated Almsbury Lodge on your left. Follow the main driveway, crossing the lake by the bridge and continue gently uphill; after approximately 150 metres take the footpath on your right A through a gate passing a play area on your left. Keep going ahead and pass through a metal kissing gate, then bear right, diagonally across the field following the way marked posts to the far right hand corner. Pass through a kissing gate in the corner of the field, bear right to cross Beesmoor Brook by a concrete bridge and after about 15 metres and before reaching the road, turn left onto a footpath. Cross a stile and bear slightly right, moving away from the brook to walk gently uphill towards a wood. Cross a stile and follow the path with the wood on your left. Cross a small stream and walk through the middle
of a large open field. At a junction with a good wide track turn left and continue downhill and bear to the left B over a stone bridge, proceeding ahead to pass between the abandoned buildings of Waterhatch Farm. Continue ahead as the path ascends Cole’s Hill. For a while, the path becomes tarmac before eventually reverting back to its former state. From here, there are wonderful views towards Winchcombe, nestling beneath Langley Hill and Sudeley Castle. Towards the top of Cole’s Hill continue to follow the path as it veers left. Stay on the path but note a solitary house set well back on your right hand side. At a drystone wall corner, turn left to enter woodland down a track C. Take care and follow the pathway as it meanders down through the woods. As the path begins to level out, look out for the remains of the villa either side of the path; a path on your left will take you about 15 metres off the route and lead to the mosaic floor protected beneath a small corrugated tin roof and some plastic sheeting held in place with stones. After viewing the mosaic, replace the sheeting and stones and then return to the main pathway. Turn left and the path leaves the woods. Walk along a grassy path enclosed by small trees and at a fork bear right, towards a kissing gate. Go through and keep ahead over an open field towards trees. Go through two kissing gates to pass through this narrow belt of trees, walk across the next field aiming for the far left hand corner.

Focus on...
eye health If you’re straining to see distant objects, struggling to read road signs, or getting headaches and tired eyes, it’s a sure sign that a sight test is well overdue.
Life advertorial
Cotswold Eye Care owners Vince Royle with daughter Celia and wife Jane.
If you’re a motorist whose eyes fall below the ‘standard of vision for driving’, you could be prosecuted for being behind the wheel. Vince Royle, owner and dispenser at Cotswold Eye Care in the High Street, Winchcombe, said regular sight tests were just as important for people with good eyesight, as for those who already wear glasses or contact lenses. “In our experience, people with ‘good’ eyesight don’t realise that their vision has deteriorated until they’re really struggling to read shop or road signs, or recognise people at a distance. It’s then that they realise their sight is not what it should be. “Not only do regular eye checks pick up any change in your vision, but they also act as a vital general health check for other serious
conditions such as diabetes, glaucoma and macular degeneration – usually an agerelated, painless eye condition that leads to gradual loss of central vision. “Often our eyes don’t hurt when something is wrong, so regular sight tests can pick up early signs of eye conditions and sometimes other health issues too, as well as ensuring you are not risking prosecution for driving with defective vision. Sight tests are recommended every two years for most patients under 70 years and every 12 months for over 70s. Diabetics should also be checked annually.” Cotswold Eye Care is a family-run, independent Opticians that Vince runs with his wife Jane and daughter Celia. The practice was established in 1997 and its dedicated team of Optometrists, Laura Matthews, Cathy Brown, Aisling O’ Donovan and Tony Burke have been part of the practice for many years.
Vince said: “If anyone is worried about their vision, or the health of their eyes, we would urge them to come and see us as soon as possible. Our eyesight is very precious and should not be taken for granted.”

Do your bit
to keep crime low Fortunately, figures for crime and disorder in Winchcombe are comparatively low, but there are still simple things you should do to help keep your home and valuables safe this winter. With November bringing the early onset of darkness, Neighbourhood Community Inspector Owen Hughes, head of the Tewkesbury Local Policing Area, knows only too well that winter time can be a fruitful time for burglars and opportunist thieves. Homes left in darkness while their owners work or shop late or enjoy seasonal parties. Cars left bursting with nicelywrapped gifts or newly-bought shopping, can make easy pickings for those keen to help themselves to another’s property. But by taking a few simple precautions, you can help protect your homes, cars and business premises. The aim is to make life much more difficult for burglars or thieves to strike, says Inspector Hughes, who’s in charge of policing in Winchcombe and its surrounding villages. He said: “It is extremely rare for a burglar to enter your home when you are in, but during the winter months there are many more hours of darkness so burglars and thieves have more chances to operate unseen and unchallenged. “Now is a good time to review your home security and ensure you are doing everything you can to deter any would-be burglar or thief.
The more difficult it is and the longer it takes for a burglar to break into your property, the less likely it is they will hang around to do it, as this increases their chances of being seen or heard and ultimately, caught. “Just doing simple things like ensuring all your doors and windows are always kept locked as a matter of routine and are always secure when you go out, will reduce the risk of your home being burgled. “If you’re at work when it gets dark; if you’re going out in the evening; or going away for Christmas, it’s wise to invest in a timer switch for your lights so it’s not so obvious that the house is unoccupied. At the very least if you’re going out leave a couple of lights inside. “It sounds basic, but many break-ins occur at houses where burglars can see that the property is empty. To them a house in darkness is a huge temptation.” With vehicles, the majority of car crime occurs because valuables are left on display or cars are left unlocked. Inspector Hughes said: “We repeat this message year after year, but people do still leave valuables on display in their cars. Either on seats, in foot wells, even on the dashboard. Again, it’s easy to defeat a thief by always locking your cars and hiding any valuables in the boot or better still, taking them with you.
“If your area doesn’t have a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme why not considering starting one? Schemes offer all sorts of proactive initiatives and opportunities to help keep you and your community safe.” And with Christmas, the season of goodwill is approaching, Inspector Hughes says being a good neighbour can be crucial during the long, dark nights of winter. “It’s very important at this time of year to be a good neighbour and look out for those who are elderly and vulnerable, including the frail and disabled or those with young children and no transport. They may need your help when it’s dark and cold, or be in difficulties when the weather is bad. A quick call, or visit, may make all the difference.”
It’s good to Talk When you see a police officer or Police Community Support Officers on patrol in Winchcombe please don’t hesitate to talk to us. We rely on you, as local residents to tell us of any issues or concerns you have about your local community. PCSO Debbie Lipinski is Winchcombe’s designated PCSO and is always happy to discuss local matters with you, either in person or on the telephone. L o o king back DRIVING 1920s’ TRADE A proud and smiling Mr Archie Lane, at the wheel of his impressive steam lorry that he drove for Winchcombe Brick and Tile Company back in the late 1920s. Mr Lane, who lived in Gloucester Street, could reach a top speed of 12 mph in this hefty machine. Notice Winchcombe’s spelling without an ‘e’ and the two digit phone number. The Winchcombe brick yard was based in Greet and was set up and run by the Beckett family from as early as the 1840s. When no family members remained to continue, it was taken over by the Winchcombe Brick & Tile Company in 1914 and continued through the war until at least 1939. (Source: British Brick Society).
