There’s always lots happening in and around Winchcombe and this summer we’re looking forward to open garden days, fun and frolics at Winchcombe Country Show and some traditional family fetes and fundraisers. We’re pleased to be featuring three new businesses in the town and our congratulations go to all at The Cats Whiskers hair salon on their silver anniversary in August and to the Radio Winchcombe volunteers who have just celebrated their first anniversary as a full-time radio station. If you love dogs we hope you love our front cover. Courtesy of Mr Bob Fryer of Winchcombe, this superb photo shows his two happy hounds Bramble, the English Springer Spaniel, and Ollie, a Springador (Labrador, Springer cross), enjoying a summer romp near Winchcombe. They certainly know how to celebrate the arrival of summer! We hope you enjoy reading our summer issue and if you have an event or news you would like featured next time, please get in touch!
Forty colourful banners are now adorning Winchcombe’s main streets thanks to a Business Forum initiative led by Alan Foster. To sponsor one of these banners contact Alan on 01242 603846.

At Wentwood House Dental Practice you will find a friendly and inviting team whose aim is to ensure that your visit to the Dentist is comfortable and pleasant.
T
he Practice has been purposely designed with your comfort and well-being in mind. We have a non-dental atmosphere and an ambience of relaxation and calm. Elouise and Malan Cloete together with their team are dedicated to providing an outstanding service. They enjoy treating patients of all ages and working with them to achieve and maintain excellent dental health for life. The Team are up to date with all the latest procedures and treatments available to ensure you receive the very best the dental world has to offer. They are very excited about 2 particular treatments that they have recently introduced with fantastic results for their patients.
PRGF (Plasma Rich in Growth Factors) Wentwood House is proud to be the first Practice in the area to bring the fantastic properties of PRGF. PRGF is Plasma Rich in Growth Factors and the results are truly remarkable. To prepare the PRGF a small sample of the patient’s blood is taken and treated to produce a concentrated mixture of natural healing factors. This is then applied to the wound area in a carefully measured therapeutic dose to optimise the healing process, particularly useful in the placing of implants.
If Wentwood House has not had the pleasure of your company yet, please feel free to pop in and introduce yourself. They always have time for a chat to answer any dental related questions you may have and they make a fabulous cappuccino! As an expanding Practice, new patients are always welcome.

news and Business TOWN SURVEY An Action for Market Towns study is being undertaken in Winchcombe in June to help establish trends in key areas such as visitor origins, shopping habits, car parking and business confidence. The initiative, on behalf of Winchcombe Town Council and Winchcombe Business Forum, will gather data on 12 key performance areas. The results will help identify issues for improvement, provide valuable evidence when applying for external funding and enable comparisons with other similar size UK towns. AMT’s Senior Consultant Mike King will be asking shoppers, visitors, retailers and business people to take part and give their views on Winchcombe Town Centre. Whether you’re a town centre regular, or someone who rarely visits, you are urged to complete the online questionnaire at www.winchcombe. co.uk which has a live link with the AMT website. No one surveyed will be identified. The study is externally funded at no cost to local taxpayers.
GOOD DEAL FOR BRIDGE PLAYERS
Time to TURN OUT the ATTIC
The hunt is on for new players to join Winchcombe Bridge Club. Chairman Ted Phillips, a National Master in the game, is keen to expand the 30-strong membership and would like to hear from those who play duplicate bridge – the competitive style - and from non-experts with a reasonable knowledge of the game. Would-be members can play up to four times a year at a ‘table money’ cost of just £1.50 before joining for only £5 per year. The Club meets at 1.45 pm for 2 pm play, every Friday at Winchcombe Day Centre in Langley Road. Last year the club won The Bredon Vale Cup and previously won Cheltenham’s coveted Rank Xerox Trophy. More match play is planned. Mr Phillips said: “We have a good standard of play with a friendly atmosphere, but we would welcome both non-expert and experienced players.”
If you’re hoarding unused china, paintings, jewellery, silver or furniture, here’s a chance to turn it into cash and support the Town Hall Appeal. Appeal fundraisers need £55,000 to fund vital repair work on the historic Town Hall, a Grade II listed Victorian building in the town centre.
For more details contact Mr Phillips on 01242 620451. History Club: The Secretary of Winchcombe’s new History Group is Mr Tim Morgan, not Tim Porter as stated in our last issue. Apologies for the error.
Dozens of WOMEN mean BUSINESS A new networking group, Winchcombe Women in Business, has attracted nearly 40 supporters to its first meeting. WWiB was the idea of Liz Stranks and Elaine Foster, both of whom live and work in the town. The group, part of Winchcombe Business Forum, will provide regular networking opportunities and a platform to share business experience, advice and good practice. There will also be social gatherings so members can get to know each other informally. Liz, manager at Winchcombe’s Coventry Building Society Agency, said: “We were delighted with the response. Everyone came from a different discipline, profession or business which provides a great diversity of experience and views on any business issues members may have. We are planning to include a structured problem-solving session and if required could look at running separate workshops on specific areas, in conjunction with the Business Forum. Everyone was very positive and there was a great atmosphere.” The first social meeting is on Friday June 28th at the Wesley House Wine Bar in the High Street, at 7pm. For more details contact info@winchcombe.co.uk or Liz Stranks on 07969130410.
Fundraiser Nicky Ball with Nicholas Granger of British Bespoke Auctions.
They have teamed up with British Bespoke Auctions in Gretton Road, to run a charity auction starting at 10.30 am on Thursday 27th June. Townspeople are being urged to donate unwanted lots but must agree to give at least 50% - hopefully more - to the appeal. Auctioneer Nicholas Granger is waiving the usual seller’s fee as long as the minimum 50% Town Hall donation is made. He said: “People can decide on an itemby-item basis how much they wish to donate to the Appeal, starting at 50% and we hope, in some cases, 100%! The lots will go into our monthly June sale and be sold alongside our other commercial lots. We’ve done a similar thing in the past for St Peter’s Church and it worked very well.” The closing date for donating lots is Wednesday 12th June. Call Nicholas on 01242 603005 for a valuation and to agree terms. Electrical goods cannot be sold.

N
ot only is your favourite treat free from the preservatives and additives so often found in processed food, but it may well contain tasty garden-grown fruits that have travelled only as far as up the garden path. So it’s no surprise that each year members of Winchcombe Country Market sell thousands of cakes, scones, savouries, pies and tar ts, and hundreds of jars of preserves and honey, as well as fruit, vegetables, eggs, plants and flowers, and a wide variety of crafts to eager buyers at their weekly town centre morning Markets. Launched as a WI Market in 1979, in a barn in Greet, with just a few producers, this thriving co-operative – par t of the national Country Markets initiative – now has over 30 members and turns over more than £20,000 each year. It was set up to provide local cooks, craft makers and growers with a regular outlet from which they could sell their home-made goods direct to an appreciative public. Winchcombe is one of 350 Country Markets operating across England and Wales and all cooks hold a current Food Hygiene cer tificate meaning Borough Environmental Health officers can inspect their kitchens, or the Market premises, at any time. Lucy Hall, secretary at Winchcombe Country Market, said: “People really enjoy buying products direct from us because we’re the ones who make them. Many of our customers like to know the source of their food and the ingredients within it. As members we all know who produces what and where so can give a detailed background on any item’s origins!”
Many Market members have been baking or growing produce for much of their lives and use traditional recipes with seasonal ingredients. Lucy said: “Over the years we’ve learned what products buyers want, so we always aim to please and are happy to take orders. It’s lovely to know someone has enjoyed a certain cake, loaf, or tart so much they come back for more!” To celebrate summer we’re featuring a favourite, Lucy’s Rhubarb Cake. Winchcombe Country Markets are held every Thursday morning in the Guide Hall, off the High Street, from 9 am to 10.30 am and on the second Saturday of the month under the Town Hall in the High Street, from 9 am to 12 noon. Visit www.countrymarkets.co.uk for more details. To join go along to one of the markets or contact Lucy at slucyhall@hotmail.com
TO MAKE 1 Cream together the sugar and marg using a wooden spoon or mixer, beat in the egg. 2 Fold in flour with a metal spoon then stir in the chopped rhubarb. 3 Turn into a greased, lined, deep 7” round tin, roughly level the surface and sprinkle quite thickly with granulated sugar. 4 Bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour on Gas mark 4-5 (Electric 180 -190oC). When cooked the top should be light golden brown and when inserted, a skewer comes out clean of mixture (although it may have some rhubarb clinging to it!) 5 Turn out of tin and cool on a wire rack. When cold, remove the lining paper, and split through the middle. 6 Make butter icing by creaming together all the ingredients. Spread over the cut surface, and put the top layer back on. Lovely served with a cup of tea or coffee, or delicious as a pudding with cream.
Queen of Cakes ‘Sponge Cake Queen’ Mrs Beryl Davies, pictured centre, is one of the Market’s founder members. At the pinnacle of her cake-making career Beryl was turning out 20 cakes a week and in 34 years of market-baking she has produced nearly 17,000 mouth-watering sponges - now that takes some beating! Picture also shows Market Manager Pat Grassick, left and member Mary-Anne Rees, right.

T
he Little Greene Child-Safe paints are specifically designed with youngsters in mind and are totally safe, hard-wearing, easy to apply and quick-drying. Certified as Child Safe under the ‘Toy Paint Regulations’ the paints are available in the three most popular qualities ranges, Intelligent Matt Emulsion, Intelligent Eggshell and Absolute Matt Emulsion and all come in a range of more than 200 colours. Stephen Meredith, owner of ‘lift the lid’ in Isbourne Way, said: “All solventbased paints contain Volatile Organic Compounds, known as VOCs, which are chemicals that give off strong odours and some can be harmful to both human health and the environment. “Traditional, oil-based paints have higher OC levels, but Little Greene’s environmentally-friendly and Child-Safe range are water-based, but have a high pigment content giving superb depth of colour with excellent covering quality and durability.
The Little Greene Child-Safe range far exceeds all legislation on VOCs, containing less than 0.1%, compared to a traditional oil-based VOC content of up to 28%. The two Child-Safe Emulsion and Eggshell paints can be tinted in the full colour palette and tester pots in 125 ml and 250 ml are available. Stephen said: “Child-Safe paints are ideal for repainting toys, stencilling and mural painting in a child’s bedroom or nursery, or perhaps freshening up furniture in a playroom. Their safe rating gives parents that all-important peace of mind.” Intelligent Matt gives an almost totally matt finish and is completely washable for walls, while Eggshell is tough, hard-wearing and great for toys and furniture. Absolute Matt, the flattest paint, is also wipe-able and a classic choice for walls.

Clarris has it
all sewn up! A life-long passion for all things quilted and cotton is now an exciting new business venture for Winchcombe patch worker Claire Gregory.
Life advertorial
H
er new Town Hall-based shop Clarris is now open for trading and offers an Aladdin’s cave of all things related to the traditional art of patch working. The ground floor shop is packed with hundreds of pretty fabrics, calico and cottons, plus needles, wadding, glue and stiffeners - everything a patch worker could need! And there is also an array of intricatelymade quilted gifts and decorations ranging from boxes, cosmetic bags, boxes, animals and shopping bags on sale from as little as £2. The new business is a real family venture with three generations of Claire’s family helping to run the shop. Her mother Brenda Gregory – also a patch worker – will be at the counter most mornings, while her younger daughter Elle, 15, also a talented quilter, will be helping out at weekends. Claire, a member of The Quilters’ Guild, said: “I have always enjoyed sewing and used to make my own clothes as a teenager. But it wasn’t until my mum suggested I attend a patch working course that I got really hooked and it’s gone from there.” Now, with many more courses under her belt and having sold from stands at four major Quilt fairs as far afield as Uttoxeter, Exeter, Shepton Mallet and Malvern, ‘Clarris - the shop’ is born. Claire said: “I’ve always wanted to run the business from a shop and now the timing is right. I know there are a lot of patch workers
and quilting groups both in Winchcombe, Bishops Cleeve and Cheltenham, so I’m hoping word about the shop will spread.” All the Clarris fabrics are 100% cotton of which there is a choice of nearly 300 ‘fat quarters’ - the quilting name for the fabric squares that measure a quarter of a yard. Fabric off the bolt is also available from £11.20 per metre which Claire sources from six different suppliers including Makower and Riley Blake. “We couldn’t wait to open the shop and we’re thoroughly enjoying meeting customers. We’re here to help everyone, if you’re a beginner needing advice, an experienced quilter wanting supplies, or you just want to browse. We look forward to seeing you!”
Clarris services: Top stitching Clarris has its own Long Arm Quilting Machine and will be offering a quilting service from later in the year.

Good Morning
Winchcombe It began as a grant-funded, two-day trial with a handful of suppor ters who thought it ‘might be good for Winchcombe.’
N
ow, nearly eight years later, Radio Winchcombe has just celebrated its first anniversary as a popular, full-time community radio station with a licence to broadcast 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Run by a dedicated team of nearly 50 volunteers and led by a six-strong management team, the station is making its mark across the 107.1 FM airwaves, broadcasting music, banter, chat and local information to listeners as far afield as the Vale of Evesham.
Winchcombe Radio Chairman and presenter Philip Arkell, one of the station’s founders.
One of the founder members is Philip Arkell, Chairman of the Management Committee, who says the station’s success has far exceeded his expectations: “I didn’t really expect us to get a full-time licence so when Ofcom confirmed in December 2011 that we’d been successful, I was quite surprised and it was all hands on deck so we could go full-time in May last year.” From doing live broadcasts on Fridays and Saturdays only, Radio Winchcombe now has live programmes going out every evening and in the daytimes on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, covering
a wide range of topics and music to suit all ages and tastes, with many of them repeated through the week. Only last month, two new live Thursday programmes were added to the weekly schedule, with Suzy McEwan running the Breakfast Show from 7 am to 9 am and the new Vitality Show with Melanie Cheeseman until 11 am, featuring music, guest interviews, live phone-ins and chat about living a happy life to the full. Philip said: “We’ve come a long way in the last year with more shows, more live broadcasts and new presenters and we’re still expanding our live programme schedules. I’m really grateful to the management team, our volunteers and to our business sponsors and advertisers for their help in developing Radio Winchcombe. “We have shows hosted by 15 and 16-year-olds up to those in their late 70s. We play classical, folk, rock, world music, jazz and pop and showcase local bands too and feature local history, current affairs, music and local events which I think is what community radio is all about.” One of the station’s flagship programmes is Focus, a live, hour-long slot every Friday featuring topical news features presented by Barbara Herod in which she interviews invited guests on controversial subjects ranging from new housing developments to the closure of Cheltenham’s Accident and Emergency department. With annual costs of around £8,000 – much of it for Performing Rights and broadcasting licences – Radio Winchcombe Ltd, has to raise 50% of its costs itself with the other 50% coming from advertising. More support is always needed from business, fundraisers and from volunteers, both keen to train as radio technicians and presenters. Philip, a retired radio engineer and communications worker, said:
“The station offers a great opportunity for young people interested in a career in radio or communications. You learn a lot, it’s a great experience, is supporting the community and is a lot of fun.
Presenter and Management Committee member Barbara Herod, left, with Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson with Olli Dean and Jim Hart, also Radio Winchcombe presenters.
And Philip should know. His life-long love of radios began as a teenager working in a local television and radio repair shop and after a career in civil service communications, he’s now expanded his skills to include live radio broadcasts. “Before we launched Radio Winchcombe all I could say was ‘Are you receiving me? Over and out,’ but I’m glad to say I’ve come on a bit in the last eight years and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.”
Tune in to this! Radio Winchcombe has: • 36 presenters a week • 45% of prime time shows live or newly-recorded • 45% with local content • 70% music-focused • 30% talk shows www.radiowinchcombe.co.uk

Walk Nordic in Winchcombe
A new Nordic Walking fitness group is stepping out in Winchcombe - and you’re invited to join them!
Life advertorial
T
he new class is being launched by town fitness instructor Clare Bayley, who is qualified with Nordic Walking UK. Using poles supplied by Clare, Nordic Walkers will be shown a specific fitness technique in which the poles are used to work the upper body muscles and propel the body along. This ensures the whole body is working as efficiently as possible and makes something we learn as babies… twice as effective. Clare, who also teaches Zumba, Fitness Pilates, Kettlercise, Bokwa and HIIT training, as part of her ‘Fitness with Clare’ business, said: “Nordic Walking is suitable for men and women, of any age or fitness level and is often used to aid rehabilitation after an illness or injury because it gradually builds up strength and fitness levels after periods of time without exercise. You don’t need
any special clothing or equipment, I supply the poles, you just turn up!” The new group meets at a different location every Saturday at 10 am for an hour of Nordic Walking, (sometimes longer), which Clare describes as ‘sociable and fun.’ “We may even finish with a visit to a tea room or coffee shop – for a healthy snack of course,” she added. Classes are just £7 but advanced booking is required. Contact Clare on: 07803 581 347 or email: clare@fitnesswithclare.co.uk More information at www.fitnesswithclare.co.uk

Leave Back Lane car park via the far corner access into Cowl Lane. Turn right and follow the road to the High Street. Turn left, crossing the main street to find Castle Street on your right. Walk down Castle Street, past the bridge and on the left you will see a finger post between some cottages. Follow the footpath to a kissing gate. Go through this and bear right across the field heading diagonally to another kissing gate A. Once through the gate, turn right along the lane for approx 120 metres, turn left at the Winchcombe Way finger post. Bear right towards a tree, keeping the telegraph post on your left, towards a bridge on the right hand side. Over the bridge bear left to the way marker, through the kissing gate and go straight ahead to a gap in the field boundary on your right. Through the gap bear left towards the corner of the fence and follow to the stile. Head uphill keeping to the left, to a way marked post on the skyline where there’s a lovely view of Winchcombe and Sudeley valley. Turn left and climb the stile back into the same field! The road section can be avoided. Diagonally cross the field aiming for the left of the trees down to a stile. Climb the stile and head across the field to next stile. Go over and straight on towards a house. Over next stile and bear right uphill, climb another stile and through the gate, turning left along the lane past St Faith’s Church, Farmcote and Farmcote Herb Garden. trong UV rays flooding into your sitting and dining rooms, conservatories and bedrooms can cause permanent fading to carpets, curtains, upholstered chairs, curtains and rugs, draining your fabrics of colour. Sarah Yates, Manager at Rapport Interiors in Winchcombe, said: “Although we all love to see the sunshine, we do need to protect our furnishings from it. Just as we use sun creams and blockers to prevent UV rays harming our skin, blinds and shutters are an ideal way to protect your home interiors from permanent fading. “If you allow sunlight directly onto your furnishings, it won’t take long for the fabrics to lose their colour and you’ll find great contrasts between fabrics that were in the sunshine and those that weren’t, and your carefully thought-out colour-scheme is ruined!” To help protect furnishings from Summer sun, Rapport Interiors is now offering 10% off all orders of shutters and blinds placed in June and July with the voucher included right. Sarah said: “We’ve a wide variety of blinds from rollers and verticals, to Venetians, wood and faux timber styles, all of which are made-tomeasure.”

For customers who prefer the American, or French-style wooden shuttered look, Rapport also offers traditional wooden Plantation shutters with tilting louvres, again, all made to your specifications. There’s a new salon on the street – and it’s offering much more than just hair care.

A
t Hair Styles UK in the High Street, owner Glen Dufty and his team describe themselves as a ‘hair spa’, a place where you can relax, have your nails done or even book a massage, while deliberating over the preferred new style and colour for your hair. The salon’s vibrant black and orange decor, combined with fresh, clean lines, great lighting and stunning Cotswold stone walls gives the salon a real contemporary feel. Glen said: “I wanted to create an environment that was inviting and comfortable for clients, where they could feel relaxed and unhurried, but that also gives that all important ‘wow’ factor.” Glen and stylist Clare Bayley are the salon’s two hair experts, both with decades of experience and enthusiasm and keen to give the client exactly what they want. “For me customer service is key to any good business and listening to what a client wants is the most important thing” said Glen. This service also extends to the salon’s opening hours with Glen often starting at 8 am and working until 9 pm if necessary – to fit in with a client’s working day or family commitments. And the salon’s broadband Wi-fi link ensure clients can ‘stay in touch’ if necessary. Glen has been working in Winchcombe for the past 18 months and previously had his own hair salon in the Canary Islands. He’s worked at London’s Goldwell Academy in Mayfair, where he ran its advanced cutting courses and has had his work featured on the covers of Vogue and Tatler.

L o o k i n g b ac k A Royal Welcome Winchcombe residents turned out in force to welcome Queen Mary – the Queen’s late grandmother – when she paid a war-time visit to the town’s munitions factory in August 1944. The small factory was set up by the Women’s Voluntary Service during the Second World War and staffed by women at the former Assembly Rooms on Abbey Terrace - now the Conservative Working Men’s Club. During the visit, the Queen also toured St Peter’s Church, and ‘took tea’ with Major and Mrs Dent-Brocklehurst at Sudeley Castle. Our first picture shows female staff outside the factory, while the second has local children and residents who had gathered to see the then Queen. Thanks to Mrs Barbara Rundle of Greet, who identified the ‘mystery man’ in our last issue. He was Mr Walter Labelle, brother-in-law to Winchcombe’s well-known post woman, the late Peggy Barrett of Toddington. He was married to her sister Winnie.
