Time out with the children? Enjoy every minute...
Planning a day out with the family can feel like preparing for a military campaign. You load up with all kinds of kit, and keep your fingers crossed that your chosen destination will provide what you can’t carry. This guide aims to make life easier for you. By exploring the pubs listed in these pages, you can be sure of a happy family lunch or drinks with friends, safe in the knowledge that each one has passed the Hampshire Tourism Partnership’s ‘family friendly’ test. We have visited pubs across the Hampshire countryside looking for those which give a real welcome to children. We’ve rated parking, high chairs, entertainments, gardens, menus and baby changing facilities. And out of all those that we visited, we have chosen those which we think promise the best all-around experience. They won’t all provide organic baby food or free nappies or a basket of toys. But they do all offer welcoming touches which mean that you can relax and enjoy yourself. And as far as possible, we have selected pubs near a tourist attraction or activity in case you want to make a day of it. Look out for more seasonal information and new pubs on www.eatoutgetabout.co.uk Stephen Munn Chair, Hampshire Tourism Partnership All pubs were visited in person and assessed against common criteria, but food quality was not tested. To check the food hygiene ratings of pubs and other eateries in Hampshire log onto www.safe2eat.com Pubs may change hands, so it is advisable to ring and double check details and booking requirements before visiting. Information correct at the time of going to press.

You will find lots of animals in and around the pubs in this guide, on pubs signs, in gardens and in the surrounding countryside. While you are waiting for your meal, why not try to find to spot the same animals in this wordsearch? There are 18 to find in total: make sure you use a pencil so that you can rub out the answers and let someone else have a go later.
Have you enjoyed your visit to one of these pubs? The Hampshire Tourism Partnership would love to hear what made it good - or what could have made it better. Send us a short review or even a picture, and you could win a prize. Ask your parents to email the review to pubs@winchester.gov.uk, including your name and age, name of pub and date of visit.
Fun & games
You can play another animal game by just counting up the number of animals you can find around the pub garden or in this guide and seeing who can find the most different ones. Set yourself a time limit like 5 minutes, and see who comes up with the longest list.

Hampshire is a big county with lots on offer for families, but sometimes the information seems to be spread across too many leaflets, websites and magazines. Here are our top websites to help you find the information you need for a family outing.
Visitor attractions Hampshire’s attractions have quizzes, hands-on exhibits, living history performances, special events and other features that will tickle your child’s imagination and whet their curiosity. For a shortcut to a great selection of places to visit, try www.visit-hampshire.co.uk or go to www.hampshireattractions.co.uk for some money-saving special offers. Local tourist information centres offer really helpful advice for a good day out with the family, so try them out with a challenge or two this holiday.
Theatres, galleries and concert halls Many arts venues offer workshops, crafts sessions and performances designed especially for children. They provide the perfect escape to a fantasy world; a safe place for a really
messy art activity, or an introduction to new hobbies. Venues that are keen to welcome families often display the Family Friendly logo on their websites and brochures. For ideas around Hampshire and further afield, check www.familywhatson.com/specialevents.asp
Libraries All over the country, libraries are reinventing themselves. Library staff run storytelling sessions, baby rhyme times and ‘meet the author’ events, and host a wide range of performances and workshops by other organisations too. No one will tell you to ‘be quiet’ these days: libraries are places for children to discover the world around them and have fun while they do it. Go to www3.hants.gov.uk/library-children.htm for events, book recommendations and information on how to claim your dinosaur library card. If you live in the Portsmouth area try www.portsmouth.gov.uk/learning/29.html and in Southampton go to www.southampton.gov.uk/s-leisure/libraries/ and follow the family links.
Special events There are hundreds of festivals and special events across the county each year, from ice rinks and Chinese New Year celebrations to melas, traditional country shows, boat shows, street theatre festivals and Hallowe’en hauntings. Many of these are free or make special provision for families. Log onto www.visit-hampshire.co.uk and follow the ‘what’s on’ link. www.eatoutgetabout.co.uk
