CHESTERVILLE – Residents looking for political perspective had their chance during Dundas County’s provincial candidates’ debate Wed., June 4. The event, co-hosted by the North Dundas Chamber of Commerce and Dundas Federation of Agriculture, took place at the Royal Canadian Legion Chesterville Branch 434. Four of the five vying for Stormont, Dundas, and South Glengarry (SD&SG)’s MPP seat at Queen’s Park were in attendance, including PC incumbent Jim McDonell, NDP Elaine MacDonald, Liberal John Earle, and Libertarian Shawn McRae. Attendees were able to grill candidates on various topics, selecting two to answer a question. Before the question and answer session, opening statements were

awarded to each of the candidates. It was during this time the political hopefuls took to smearing each other, and their party affiliations. McRae led off with ideas about dissecting the current operation of provincial government, but it was Earle who took the first of what was many direct shots at McDonell, SD&SG’s representative since first being elected in 2011. “We need action, not somebody who toes the party line while opportunities are missed,” Earle said. “Our party has made mistakes, I won’t deny that. But there are now measures in place so that they don’t happen again.” MacDonald, meanwhile, said debates throughout the riding are advantageous, helping to make candidates aware of the issues that don’t often get the airtime or newspaper ink they deserve. “We get to hear from you, and get insight into the concerns,” she said. “I hope I get to take them to Queen’s

Park and get action on them.” McDonell used much of his speaking time to champion the PC’s vaunted “Million Jobs Plan,” and the reason 100,000 public sector jobs need to be eliminated. “Ontario is at a crossroads,” he

said. “In the last five weeks, 2,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost. That is 42,000 net jobs lost since [Kathleen] Wynne became premier. The job losses are accelerating, and [my opponents] have leveled a lot of misinformation about our

METCALFE – Brenda Rushton can hardly find the right words to describe the sorrow she feels. Some eight years after she and her husband, David, watched as their adopted son Shawn, who was afflicted with Duchenne muscular dystrophy,

was lowered into the ground, the couple has once again been hit by a torrent of grief. “I’m just flabbergasted by it all,” Rushton told the Winchester Press. Earlier this month, Rushton and her husband attended the memorial service at Metcalfe United Union Cemetery. After the ceremony, the two attended Shawn’s gravesite.

FINCH – What are local would-be politicians willing to do to alleviate poverty in Stormont, Dundas, and South Glengarry (SD&SG)? On Thurs., June 5, at South Nation Conservation in Finch, the Social Development Council of Cornwall and Area’s Poverty Working Group, in co-operation with Linking Hands, a project of the House of Lazarus, hosted an all-candidates debate focusing on this question. Those hoping to become SD&SG’s next MPP talked about how they might impact the region’s

poor through changes in provincial governmental policies. The June 5 session began with opening statements from John Earle (Liberal), Jim McDonell (PC), Shawn McRae (Libertarian) and Elaine MacDonald (NDP). Green Party candidate Sharron Norman was absent. “We need to take care of those most vulnerable in our society,” Earle said. “We recognize the struggles of families and we want to help. [We are] focusing on initiatives to make everyday living more affordable.” • see POVERTY on next page
