NEW & NOTABLE A heads up on some fun things coming your way by JENNY BAKER

THE HOP AROUND THE CORNER Broken Window Brewer y, located at 14 W. Boscawen St., will become Winchester's fourth brewery by the end of this summer. Owner Zach Aufdenberg and head brewer Jacob Aurand began renovation work on the circa 1875 building in late April, with plans to open by early September. They've unexpectedly discovered old brick walls under the plaster they removed, which will add character to the 1,500-square-foot space. “There is a lot of history in this old building and we would like to showcase it the best we can,” said Aufdenberg. The nanobrewer y will feature eight different craft beers, including staples like an IPA and cream ale, and a rotation of seasonal beers. While they haven't produced any beers commercially yet, the pair has been into homebrewing for quite a while and took home three medals in the recent Hop Blossom Festival's homebrew competition. They placed first in the Fruit Beer category with their raspberry wheat, first in the Strong British Ale category with their Wee Heavy, and third in the American IPA competition with their IPA. Aufdenberg said they expect the buildout to be complete by early August, at which time their brewing equipment will arrive and they'll need one month to produce enough beer for an opening in early September.

BREW NEWS Run for your beer during the Growler Team Relay on August 19. You’ll start at Winchester Brew Works on Cameron Street, and as a relay team, work your way thirty-plus miles down to the Woodstock Brewhouse in Shenandoah County, and back again. While one teammate runs, others will play games, solve riddles and decipher clues to earn extra beer bucks. Winchester Brew Works will throw a big party at the finish line, where the winning team will receive a commemorative growler. Visit www.vamomentum.com for more details. Escutcheon Brewing Co. screens “creature features,” retro horror movies from the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s, every second Sunday through September at the brewery on West Commercial Street in downtown Winchester. Up next: “The Bowery at Midnight” (1942) on July 10. . . Alesation Brewing Co. on the Old Town pedestrian mall will soon begin a “Classic Beer Series,” where they’ll focus on a traditional beer style and feature it for three to four months. First on deck? A classic Hefeweizen, which will be out in August. . . Want to get in on the hop farming action? Backroom Brewer y outside of Middletown hosts their annual Hop Harvest Party on or around August 28 (exact date to be determined, as the hops need to be ready to harvest). You'll be picking their homegrown Cascade hops, and once they’re picked, brewer Darren Queen will use them to brew the first fresh hop beer of the season.

SHOP AND SAVE If you've ever thought the Old Town pedestrian mall was a perfect place for a big sidewalk sale, then you're in luck: the Winchester Main Street Foundation and Old Town Winchester Business Association will host Winchester Days the last weekend in July: Friday, July 28 through Sunday, July 30. The long-time sidewalk sale, which has been around since the 1970s, was once a big deal. It featured a live radio broadcast and even a car giveaway for a few years. While the sale is now just a traditional sidewalk sale, good deals can be found from more than 30 independent retail shops, as they seek to clear out their summer inventory in time for new fall merchandise. Check the Facebook page for the event for details on participating businesses and discounts.

WHAT TO EAT WHAT TO DRINK

Charlie Fish, cicerone and owner of Murphy Beverage Company in Winchester, talks beer and food pairings for all your summertime experiences by JENNY BAKER

The Radler (or Shandy) The perfect beach, pool, or cookout concoction, the radler/shandy is typically a 50:50 mix of beer and lemonade, or carbonated fruit beverage. But you don't have to make your own — several craft breweries have saved you the trouble. Charlie Fish recommends Stiegl-Radler Grapefruit, South Street Shandy, and Schöfferhofer Grapefruit. These light beers go perfectly with appetizers like a meat and cheese board or fruit salads.

The Saison This clean, light, refreshing beer with a bit of spice pairs well with your summer salads — think anything leafy and green, not your picnic pasta salads. Fish recommends the Black Peppercorn Saison by 3 Stars Brewing, the Allagash Saison, and the Classic Saison by Blackberry Farm.

The IPA One of the most popular craft beer styles today, the India Pale Ale is a perfect partner to your salty and fried foods. Think french fries, Route 11 potato chips, fried chicken, and spicy tacos. IPA's are a great picnic beer, but consider packing cans like AleSmiths IPA, to make the cooler lighter to carry, or bring a growler of Alesation Brewing Co.’s award-winning Hop Sneeze.

The Smoked Beer Rouchbier, a German-style smoked beer, imparts a smokey flavor due to the fresh green malts that are dried in ovens. Hence, it goes very well with any of your favorite summertime grilled or smoked meats, like BBQ, brisket, or smoked chicken and also hamburgers. Fish said it's a perfect beer for camping, but be sure to buy it canned to make the trek easier. Not many U.S. breweries make this style; she suggests looking for a European brand like Belguim brewery De Dochter van de Korenaar's Peated Oak Aged Embrasse or Charbob, a smoked vanilla stout.

The Sour A beer good to serve with desserts, sours have an intentionally sour or tart taste, and are often fruity. Fish said that sours are made when a wild yeast “infects” the beer either through barrels or open air fermentation, which is very unpredictable. A brewer can also intentionally “infect” the beer through something like Brettanomyces or fruit while the beer ages, which causes a secondary fermentation. Not all sours are fruit-driven. A few crafts that Fish recommends include Escutcheon Brewing Co.’s Cheerly Kriek, Devil's Backbone Cran-Gose, and Ommegang's Rosetta.

New summer beers abound at Alesation Brewing Company, located above Roma’s on the Old Town pedestrian mall. Owner/brewer Caleb Ritenour and head brewer Paul Froeschle are excited about their new Get Lucy Double IPA, which is the first double IPA by the brewery. Froeschle said they were inspired to create it due to a recent trip to Boston, where double IPAs are very popular. They learned a few things while there and brought the idea back to Winchester to make it their own. The Get Lucy Double IPA is a crisp and easy drinker, very hop forward with aromatics of tropical fruits and citrus. It has a light and crisp malt background which complements the hop profile. They recommend enjoying this beer at the end of the night by a campfire, but not while you’re hiking as it’s an 8.9% ABV (Alcohol by volume). The beer will go great with bar foods, chicken wings in particular. DRINK ALSO: Two new releases, both Berliner Weisses: a mango and a raspberry. Crisp, tart, low ABV, these fruity sours were made for a sunny day.

Froeschle said they were inspired to create it due to a recent trip to Boston, where double IPAs are very popular. Crisp, tart, low ABV, these fruity sours were made for a sunny day.

Escutcheon regulars are happy to see this traditional Bavarian weissbier back on the menu board this summer. Head brewer John Hovermale, who describes this as one of his “top 5” beers, said its flavors of banana and clove make it a great summertime craft. Hovermale said it’s hard to find true German-style beers in the U.S. Made with Haullertau hops, a type of German hop that is considered one of the “nobel hops,” this beer goes great with grilled jerk chicken topped with avocados and poblano peppers (such as he did recently), but also brats, burgers, and sweeter tropical-style shrimp or fish. While it’s enjoyable anytime, Hovermale said it’s best enjoyed surrounded by friends. DRINK ALSO: Slip Angle IPA, which Hovermale said has lower international bitterness units and lots of tropical, fruity hops and wheat malts; Reluctant Splice Gose, a refreshing traditional German-style Gose with aromatic coriander and Icelandic sea salt, which you’ll want to be sipping outside in the heat.

This lightly sweet, slightly fruity Belgian style beer looks innocent, but watch out — it packs a punch with 7% ABV. “It is a little high in alcohol; it’s meant to be like the true Belgian style blondes like Leffe that have a little bit of wheat in them, some fruity ester characters, but finish out dry on the palate,” said Bonnie Landy, head brewer for Winchester Brew Works. True to the Belgian style, this ale is simple in its ingredients list: pilsner and wheat malts, German hops, and Abbey Ale yeast. A perfect patio beer, enjoy it either on the Winchester Brew Works patio or get a growler and take it home to your own patio. Landy said it’s also great for picnics and has enough flavor that it holds up against marinated grilled chicken or sausage. Stay tuned: They’ll take some of this beer and make it into a peach-apricot radler. DRINK ALSO: Belgian Orange, a light Belgian style with orange peel and corriander; Tea & Honey Double IPA, made with local wildflower honey, Earl Grey tea and floral Calypso hops; Bonnie Brown, an American Brown Ale.

When it’s sweltering outside, you want something cold, crisp, and fresh. You can’t get much fresher than a beer made with basil, grown on-site at the Backroom Brewery, located on the property of the Sunflower Cottage in Middletown. Owner Billie Clifton said she dreamed up the recipe in the winter of 2012. Since then, head brewer Darren Queen has perfected the recipe. “It was the original beer recipe that convinced me to open the brewery,” said Clifton. “When I tasted it, I said ‘yes, we can build our brewery around herbal beers.’” The lemon basil wheat beer was a hit; not only is it their most popular craft, it has also won a few gold medals in state and national competitions. The brewery offers 20 craft beers, utilizing as many of their herbs — including hops — grown on the property as possible. DRINK ALSO: Backroom Blonde Ale, an easy-drinking, lightly hopped ale; Citra Golden Hop Surprise, an East Coast-style IPA with grapefruit and stonefruit aroma; the Backpackers Pale Ale, a crisp and refreshing ale inspired by all the campers that stop by the brewery.

feature Nicotine

Kiss Carlos

by Nell Zink Convential 20-something Penny Baker recently inherits her bohemian late father’s childhood home. Instead, she finds it occupied by a group of friendly anarchist squatters who have renamed the property “Nicotine.” The rest of her family wants to kick them out as they have other plans for the property, but Penny instead finds a kinship and sense of community with the squatters. A humorous and original novel about families — both the ones we’re born into and the ones we create — this is a story of obsession, idealism, and ownership.

by Adriana Trigiani A decades-long feud between two brothers. . . A cousin whose life is upended after the arrival of an urgent telegram from Italy. . . Deciding to do what is expected, or take a risk for a life you dream of living. “Kiss Carlo” is an inter-generational story of family secrets, the triumph of true love over grief, and what it takes to risk it all for the American dream. Set in the golden years of post-war America in south Philadelphia, Adriana Trigiani explores the complex Italian-American experience of the Palazzini family.

the roundup SEXI-MEXI BURRITOS EST. 2013

Owner: Crissy Willis, co-owner of Cristina's Cafe in Strasburg. What they make: Fusion burritos made with as many locally-sourced ingredients as possible. Best seller? The Cuban. It has Yucatan-style roasted pork from their farm with black beans, avocado, pickled onions, jalapenos, cheese and chipotle aioli. Where to find them this summer: Winchester Brew Works, Escutcheon Brewing, River and Roots Festival, Red Wing Roots Festival, Pink Moon Festival, Lockn, Watermelon Park Fest, The Festy.

JACK KNUCKLE GOURMET EST. 2013

Owners: Abigail Gomez & Steve Callahan What they make: Gourmet sandwiches. Favorites include the “That’s Turkey, Son!" and the “El Vance,” which is roasted pork, Virginia ham, melted swiss, dill pickles, and brown mustard on grilled sourdough — their homage to the Cuban sandwich, named for Abi’s Cuban father. Where to find them this summer: Pretty busy with catering gigs, but you can find them at Valerie Hill Winery for their July 4th celebration and again on July 22 for a WATTS fundraiser.

UP IN SMOKE BBQ EST. 2014

Owner: Mark Myers What they make: Pork BBQ is the #1 item, but be sure to try their unique menu items like Korean BBQ Tacos, Tex Mex Brisket Taco, and Texas-style Brisket. You'll also find southern favorites like baked beans which has a spicy kick, light and fresh coleslaw, and his mother's potato salad. Where to find them this summer: You'll normally find them in the Title Max parking lot on Valley Avenue. They keep busy with catering but hope to get into more local festivals, wineries, and breweries.

FOOD TRUCK

ROUNDUP MAC SHACK EST. 2014

Owner: Shannon Stasiowski What t h ey m a ke : G o u r m et m ac a n d cheese, please. Plus lobster mac and cheese. Mac and cheese also tops all the sandwiches like rib-eye cheese steaks with peppers and onions, beef sliders, pork sliders. They also have fried cod, a grilled chicken sandwich, and a kids’ menu. Where to find them this summer: Follow them on social media so you can keep track of their whereabouts; you'll often find them at local wineries and breweries.

THE BBQ PALACE EST. 2011

Owners: Matt & Julie Shaffer What they make: The pork BBQ sandwich, ribs, mac and cheese, and broccoli salad tops the list, but they also serve beef brisket, Cajun chicken, cole slaw, baked beans, and desserts like cookies and pies. Where to find them this summer: Middletown’s 4th of July celebration, and Belle Grove Plantation events like their wine festival on August 26 and the National Sheep Dog Trials in late September.
