PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Another openin’, another show – with Broadway stars and the MSO…

Welcome to the Missoula Symphony’s final performance of the season, Broadway Blockbusters!

What a delight to hear our orchestra play with amazing Broadway and local vocalists once again. We are grateful to Curt Olds and the production he and Julia Tai bring to our stage, and to the Tremper Family whose continued sponsorship of the Broadway Show has helped create a new Missoula tradition.

We have enjoyed a wonderful season with an incredible repertoire that included both traditional and new classical fare, guest artists from around the world, and a guest composer, Donald O. Johnston, who allowed the MSO to premiere his beautiful symphony honoring Lewis and Clark. Our Holiday Pops and Family concerts were huge hits as well, thanks to our directors, musicians, and chorale. Bravo, everyone!

Even though our season is coming to a close, there is so much more the MSA will bring to our community before next season starts in the Fall of 2023.

Our patrons will want to make sure to attend our very first Symphony Speakeasy on June 9th. Dress up as your favorite bootlegger or moll and enjoy food, drinks, and some swinging jazz. If dressing up is not your thing, you’re still welcome – but you’ll need the password to be let into the joint. Buy your tickets at the MSA office or online, where you’ll be given the secret word. No sharing with any stool pigeons, or it’s curtains for you.

We will also see you at the Kettlehouse Amphitheater where the MSO will accompany musician Ben Folds on August 2nd. This concert will take place less than two weeks before Symphony in the Park on August 13th. Pencil these dates into your summer calendar!

The MSA looks forward to continuing to bring beautiful music to the Missoula Community with the support of our patrons and donors. Thank you for making this possible.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

There’s a time, every spring, just as the earliest flowers appear and the trees bud, that I’m unashamedly drawn to the theatre, and especially to the Broadway repertoire. Growing up as a singer in St. Louis, spring represented the beginning of a season that began with the intimate and imaginative productions of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, magical riverside pops performances by the Saint Louis Symphony in their summer home at the Mississippi River Festival and culminating in lavish fully staged musicals at the MUNY Opera, the world’s largest outdoor theater nestled in Forest Park, the site of the 1903 World’s Fair.

For as long as I can remember, highlights of my summer included outstanding performances of the great American musical theater canon – almost always outdoors. Those experiences are at the heart of my musical journey and provide much of the soundtrack of my life and the lives of countless St. Louisans.

What a joy it is to welcome you to these final concerts of the Missoula Symphony’s 2022-2023 season! This is a concert that has something for everyone, and one I’m certain you will enjoy – whether you’re a fan of Rogers and Hammerstein, Jerry Herman, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, or Sara Bareilles. Like many of you, I know many of these tunes intimately. I can literally sing them in my sleep. Yet, there’s always something new, something comforting about hearing them again – especially accompanied by an outstanding ensemble of world-class musicians.

With the advent of digital sound, the size of Broadway orchestras in New York has continued to shrink. Yes, this is a very special experience, a rare opportunity to hear these songs with their full orchestrations, just as their composers imagined them.

Thank you to the Tremper family, for making these concerts possible. Thanks too, to Montana native Curt Olds’ Black Tie Broadway and to the many fine musicians you see on stage for this special collaboration. Most of all, thank you for your continued support of the Missoula Symphony.

While our season might “officially” be coming to a close, there’s much more ahead in the coming months. To quote a famous St. Louisan that went on to great success in New York. . . “It ain’t over, ‘til it’s over!” We look forward to seeing you for more summer fun at Symphony in the Park and at Kettlehouse Amphitheater with Ben Folds.

Thanks again for coming to our show!

With sincere appreciation,

PROGRAM NOTES by

Last season, Missoula Symphony’s Music Director Julia Tai called me to collaborate on a very special set of concerts in partnership with the Missoula Symphony. That phone call has forged a wonderful friendship, not only between us, but also between the Missoula Symphony and my company Black Tie Broadway, which works in collaboration with symphony orchestras across the globe. Last season we brought you “My Fair Broadway” and now, we follow that successful collaboration with “Broadway Blockbusters.” This concert features artists seen on Broadway as well as Montana-based artists who are probably quite familiar to Missoula audiences. I hope you enjoy this “musical dessert” to finish off Missoula Symphony’s 2022-2023 season which brought you Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Bach, Caroline Shaw, Mahler, Hidgon, and most recently, Prokofiev and Strauss. Why not complete the season with music by Broadway’s Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter? As a Montana native, nothing makes me happier than bringing Broadway back to Montana, so please, sit back and enjoy!
