We're online John Hi there I'm looking for S**** Channels... do you carry any? Chris Lambrinides has joined

Chris Lambrinides (agent) Hi there. No we do not carry S**** brand channels.

Chris Lambrinides (agent) BUT... you may want to check out our Slayer and Pickle Channels. They're comparable to S**** Channels.

John Why don't you just carry S****?

Chris Lambrinides (agent) I'm not sure, the manufacturer won't let us carry his products.

John Oh, that's weird.

Chris Lambrinides (agent) Yeah, I know.. right? Rest assured, though, that the Slayer and Pickle Channels are a comparable replica.

Aerial Work Platforms

Pictures and article by Steve ball I SBS Window cleaning i Smithville, Ohio

Having worked for an industrial painting contractor for eight years, and having now owned a window-cleaning business for eighteen years, I have spent a large part of my working life in aerial work platforms (AWP). Like many of you, I have worked almost every type of machine - in a variety of work environments - and have trained many coworkers how to operate them. I have owned two machines myself. Experience is the best teacher, right? According to the International Powered Access Foundation, 90% of AWP accidents are caused by operator error. Experience alone is not enough, as has been shown by egregious OSHA violations, and worse, veteran operators usually cause accidents. AWPs have revolutionized both the construction and building maintenance industries. There will always be buildings requiring window cleaners to use an AWP. Since they are, when used correctly, a safe, efficient alternative to scaffolding and ladders, they have saved countless lives and man hours. When improperly used, however, they pose a real danger to you, your employees, and the public around your worksite. A company training program is vital for safety and

18

liability reasons, and is the first thing looked for in OSHA investigations. It is not the purpose of this article to cover all aspects of safe AWP operation, but rather to help you start or improve your company’s AWP safety program. If you don’t have a program, you need to start one. Asking whether or not your employees know how to operate them does not constitute training. And there is nothing about being a solo owner/operator that makes these machines less dangerous. Whether you are an owner/operator or have many employees, you must educate yourself. To build a training program, first standardize AWP terminology. Stop calling everything that goes up a cherry-picker. Differentiate the equipment you may need: telescoping boom lifts, articulating boom lifts, trailer-mounted, crawlermounted, scissor lifts, mast lifts, or bucket trucks. Understand the uses and limitations of each type. Do you need electric or propane power for inside work, or is diesel or gas acceptable? Know the job site requirements. Is a 4WD machine needed? Do you need non-marking tires? Learning, and

then teaching, what equipment is available is the first step in choosing the right machine for rent or purchase. Get a catalogue from your local rental company and ask questions. Second, develop a written operators test, as you should have already done for chemical or ladder safety. More important, have a “drivers test” in an AWP, which you will observe and grade. You will need separate tests for boom and scissor lifts. Keep these records in each employee's file, and maintain a safety training matrix. This will allow you to track who has been trained on what, and when. If you find yourself with the rare hour on a job with an AWP, do a refresher course, and document it. Learn about and then teach the physics involved in using AWPs. “This machine won’t let you go anywhere unsafe” isn’t true, no matter

how advanced the electronic controls. For example, when using a boom lift, up to 40% of the weight of the machine can be on any one tire. With our company’s most commonly rented machine, an 85’ telescoping boom, that means often 14,400 lbs is on one tire tread. Many tip-over accidents result when the operator drives a fullyextended lift from a location where it is properly supported to a new location incapable of supporting the weight of that one tire of the machine, such as over a sewer vault. Learn how to mitigate this risk. Download and place in your company safety manual the product specification sheets from AWP manufacturer websites. This will provide the exact weight, and load ratings per tire. We place these sheets in each truck’s safety binder. These sheets will also provide information on the working envelope (where the basket can go in relation to the base) of a particular AWP. This is vital in choosing the correct equipment and saving you money. For instance, renting a 125’ boom to reach over landscaping to a five story building sounds reasonable. Most 60’ and 85’ booms have an equal vertical and horizontal, or side, reach. But a JLG 125’ only has a 63’ side reach, leaving you short. At today’s rental rates, that is an extremely expensive miscalculation.

According to OSHA, full body (not belt type) harnesses are required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in a bucket truck, telescoping, or articulating boom lift. Working without a proper harness and lanyard is a common, and very visible, OSHA violation. Choose the right harnesses and shock-absorbing lanyards for your workers. Always attach lanyards to the dorsal (back) D-ring, and use double-legged lanyards if you need to exit the machine onto a roof or ledge. This allows connection to fall arrest on the building before detaching from the AWP basket. Get your employees the correct size; an ill-fitting harness discourages its use, and can cause injury in the event of a fall. Harnesses must be replaced every five years, and if involved in a fall, immediately removed from service and destroyed. A harness protects the worker if he or she were simply to fall out, but a more common danger is catapulting. Workers can be ejected if the base of an AWP is struck by another vehicle. Also, should a lift suddenly sink on one tire, such as caused by settling ground or concrete, or even simply driving into a pothole, the worker won't be ejected. When training experienced operators, I always hear: “If it weren’t for the harness, I could probably jump clear instead of hitting the basket on the way back down!” There is overwhelming evidence that “jumping clear” is usually fatal. Nothing will convince you faster than viewing photos and video of AWP accidents available in formal training programs. The injuries that could result from being properly harnessed and secured

20

to the platform are always the lesser of two evils. Most large equipment rental companies offer training programs. These presentations are the most powerful tool in teaching your crew why certain practices are inexcusable. Send your crew to a session, hire a trainer for a few hours, or take a train-the-trainer course to handle it in-house. Create a “Wall of Shame” in your shop where they can see the latest accident reports. Let them analyze what went wrong, then apply that knowledge to relevant situations. Let them gawk and wince at the accident photos, then relate them to your work sites. Make inspection of harnesses, lanyards, and the AWPs a regular routine, and document it. I have been forced to climb down from a fully extended boom lift after its primary and back-up power system failed. Had I done the complete pre-shift inspection, I would have discovered the back-up system was not working. A “ready-torent” tag is no guarantee. Safety is more important than TDS readings, soap wars, or fabricating debris. If you have ever been on a job site where a serious accident has occurred, or have been injured yourself, it puts everything else into perspective. “Safety First” means your safety program should take priority over marketing, hiring, or anything else you spend time or money on in your company. A good AWP safety program saves lives.

Google Places What is Google Places? Google Places, according to Google, is a place to get businesses found via local search results on both Google Search and Google Maps. If you have ever conducted a local search online, you have most likely seen a Google Places listing.

Why is it important to you? Google states that 1 out of every 5 searches on Google is related to location. While it’s impossible to know exactly how many searches that equals, I would estimate the number in the hundreds of millions for local searches done every single day. Google also states that 97% of 24

From the Google Places guide by billy templeton

consumers search for local businesses online. So if you own a business or sell a service and you want free advertising to people already looking for your service, Google Places is the place to be. What I have noticed is that Google is both pushing “organic” listings down the search results and putting Places listings at the top, under paid advertising, and mixing them in with organic results. I have seen a local company come up in the search results with their organic listing and then their Google Places listing underneath it. This could potentially give someone two spots on the first page of Google. How nice would that be?

SHOPWINDOWCLEANINGRESOURCE.COM

After talking with different 862.266.0677

people in different parts of the country. I've found that the results and how they are displayed are different. You can find 1-box, 3-box, 7-box, and the newest merged results.

Getting into Google Places The first things you want to do is to see if you are already listed in Google Places. Go to http://maps. google.com/ and search for your business. You can also try other search terms relevant to your business like your phone number, address, etc.

If you found your business: If you find your business in the results, click on the link. At the top right of your business, it will either say “Business Owner” or “Owner-VerifiedListing.” If it says Business Owner, it means that Google has found your business online through other directories or citations and you can claim your listing.

If you didn’t find your business: If you didn’t see your business or you can’t access it, you need to start a new Google Places listing. Before you build your listing, you first need to build your citations. The most important things to make sure you have the same in EVERY citation are: 1. Business Name 2. Address 3. Phone number 4. Website 5. Images 6. Video

everything. This applies to any place you are putting your business information. If they allow you to upload ten videos, then upload ten videos. If they allow you to add pictures, add the maximum amount of pictures allowed. Fill out every single box that asks for your business information. You need to do this even if it requires you to go and take some more pictures or video, or write some articles to place in the blog. A good rule is if you have information already in the listing, don’t re list it in the same listing unless it asks for it. If you do, it could be considered spam or keyword stuffing, and could adversely affect your listing.

Reviews Now that you have your citations set up along with your Places listing you are going to want to build reviews on the different sites. One thing to remember about Google is that they are smart. Randomness is the key to your success. Try to be as random as possible, not sticking to any patterns - this will help your end goal. If you use my suggestions, you should be able to accomplish this.

PPC Marketing with Google window cleaning sparta, nj

Sussex NJ Window Cleaning - Professional and Fully Insured www.allcountywindowcleaning.com/ Same Day Service Available

What is it? PPC = Pay per click. Everyone knows how to use Google, but most people don’t realize how easy it is to display an ad on the first page or at the top of the search results. The good thing about them, aside from the affordable cost, is that they are highly targeted. If someone searches “window cleaning my town USA,” you can buy your way to the first place spot. You also only pay every time someone actually clicks on your ad; it is in no way based on how many times your ad is shown. You only pay for results, and they are easily measurable. Let's start by going to http://adwords. google.com. Set-up is extremely simple: the system will first ask you to verify your location and currency. If you have an existing Google or Gmail account, the system will log you in automatically. An e-mail confirmation will be sent to you for authorization. After you click that, you will be good to go.

Starting your campaign Log into your account, watch the training video, and click “create your first campaign.” 1. Name your campaign “Window Cleaning North Jersey.” 2. Pick the location(s) in which you would like it displayed. I recommend targeting exact zip codes, but you could do your whole service area if you choose.

26

Sussex NJ Window Cleaning www.allcountywindowcleaning.com/ Same Day Service Available

3. Pick the type of ad you want; I recommend “text only in search results” but you could pick display ads and partner networks as well. 4. Pick the devices on which you would like it displayed. 5. Select your daily budget. I highly recommend starting with a small amount; try $5-10 a day to get started. Remember that you can change the budget whenever you like.

Key word research Now the fun part! Think about if you were looking for your service. What would you type into Google? • Window Cleaning Town State? • Window Cleaning County? • Window Cleaning State? • Window Washing? I would jot down about ten different combinations of things you might type into Google to find your service. Then survey ten of your friends and family members to see what they would type into Google to find you. I always found it helpful during these brainstorming sessions to imagine I was searching for a comparable service like carpet cleaning or house cleaners. As you go through the set up process, you will notice that Google also provides you with a very handy keyword selection tool that will help you generate a ton of ideas that you would have never thought of.

SHOPWINDOWCLEANINGRESOURCE.COM

862.266.0677

Writing your ad I recommend making your campaigns highly targeted. I prefer to target each zip code with its own ad. Let's say you live in a town called Sparta and are searching for a window cleaning company. Which of the following ads would you be more likely to pick? 1. Sparta Window Cleaning, Professional and Fully Insured, Same Day Service Available 2. Window Cleaning, Professional and Fully Insured, Same Day Service Available Notice how I put in the town name I am targeting? This makes it very relevant to the audience my ad is targeting. I have done split tests, and the ad mentioning the town name always wins. When you are setting up your campaign, just make sure you match up the proper town name in the back end to the town name mentioned in your ad. Take the list of keywords or search terms you brainstormed in the previous steps and use those in the actual ad you write. This may sound slightly complicated, but once you're logged in you will see how easy Google makes it for you.

The most important part "Broad match, phrase match, exact match." From what I have observed, this is where and why most PPC campaigns fail. Setting it up the correct way ensures the most highly targeted potential clients will see and act on your ad. This is how it works: * Please note the differences in capitalization and spelling. [is this referring to anything specific?] Broad match [will the different font color show up in the final version? If not, there should be quotes around all of the differently-colored words] keywords will show your ad when the keyword is similar to what you have. You may have selected the word window cleaning to trigger your ad, but with a broad match selected, your ad will most

likely also be triggered by the keywords window cleaners, cleaning a window, window cleaning. Phrase match keywords can be selected by putting double quotes around the phrase; what’s between the quotes must appear somewhere in the actual search. Set to broad match the word window cleaning will most likely also be triggered by the search terms Sussex county window cleaning, window cleaning Sparta NJ, window cleaning services. Exact match can be set by putting a set of brackets around your word. This is my favorite and default way of setting up campaigns. Your ad will only be triggered by the exact term that is between the brackets. Using this method certainly narrows down your available audience, but it ensures highly targeted and specific traffic. After you write your first ad, you will be taken to a payment screen to set up your billing and then you are good to go. The whole thing can literally be set up and running in less than ten minutes. I recommend you take your time and experiment with different keywords, ads, and budgets until you find a series of ads that works really well for you. You aren’t just limited to one ad, either; I have run campaigns in the past with hundreds of highly targeted ads. What we went over today just scratches the surface of what you can do. Get logged in, do some reading, watch a couple of training videos, and start experimenting. Organizing your campaign Conversion maximization Testing, testing, and more testing.

Outsourcing Your Payroll There are a lot of companies that specialize in payroll outsourcing. If you have employees or are thinking of adding a few, I can't recommend using one of these companies enough.

What companies are out there? There are many different ones: , Paychex, ASA, ADP and Intuit . I have used all of these at some point, but am currently with ADP.

SurePayroll

Paychex How do I choose?

Reliable ADP seems to have a nice balance of reliability and cost savings which I thought would be a good fit for my company. Of course, you should do research on a few companies before settling with one.

28

SHOPWINDOWCLEANINGRESOURCE.COM

862.266.0677

How do they work? If you are not familiar with how they work, once or twice a week (depending on how you pay your staff ) you submit your employee's hours to the company. You can usually submit them by fax or through a simple online interface.

The payroll company cuts checks for your employees and takes out all the proper state and federal with holdings automatically. This was the major selling point for me in the beginning, because they take care of all the state and federal compliance. They take the burden of knowing all the necessary tax laws and take care of the appropriate withholding and unemployment tax payments. All you have to do is make sure you submit the proper hours or salary to the company weekly, and make sure there is enough in your account to cover the payroll.

On the day before payday, usually Thursdays, they take the money out of your account and deliver your paychecks. If possible, I recommend setting up a separate bank account just for payroll.

Do a little investigation yourself - most companies will come out to meet with you and explain their services. I wouldn’t necessarily look for the cheapest provider, but would look for one that balances cost with the right services for you. A lot of them offer things you may or may not need such as human resource services.

No boredom in Harlem in the late 80s. I grew up quick, getting on the force at twenty years old. Policeman, fireman, window cleaner – which are you? Ha ha …well, my cop days are long gone. I was a cop from 1988 to 1993. So I am a firefighter/lieutenant and window cleaner presently. Why the change of jobs – do you get bored easily? 38

No boredom in Harlem in the late 80s. I grew up quick, getting on the force at twenty years old. But going over to the FDNY was the best move I ever made. It is a much better lifestyle. What other jobs have you done? While I was with the fire department, I had many other jobs. I worked with carpenters,

862.266.0677

Behind the Squeegee with Dave Turner

I was a limo driver, I owned a windshield repair business, I had a FDNY based retail web business, and worked high-end security.

shifts (two a week), and have off anywhere between 2-5 days in between, so why not do more work?

What sort of person likes to have a full time job and also have other work on the side? Well, I’m sure I could name lots of guys on the WCR forum that put the same amount of hours I work in a week with two jobs with just their window-cleaning business. You can tell by reading posts there are a lot of hustlers, busting their butts from morning till night. But on the FDNY we do 24-hour

So do you have a home life? Yup, I guess home is the third full time job. Always something to do - grass, garden, honey-do lists, kids, sports - but I love it. Does your wife hate you? Hold on, let me ask her. Do you know the names of your three

SHOPWINDOWCLEANINGRESOURCE.COM

kids? (Sorry, getting carried away now.) My kids' names are all in alphabetical order Ashley, Brandon and Christopher- so I just yell out "ABC!" How do you manage to achieve a work/life balance? I haven’t figured out the balance yet. My wife says I’m unorganized. I usually sum up my hectic life like trying to stuff five pounds of crap into a two-pound bag. Sometimes I have to force myself to slow down. So when exactly did window cleaning come into the equation? It was before 9/11. A guy in my old firehouse did it. I was intrigued. I would sit in the kitchen and talk about it with him. I thought it was the perfect job to do to fit my schedule. I credit him for putting it in my head. Unfortunately, he died on 9/11. What drew you to window cleaning specifically? There were a few things that drew me to it. A big one was when I was thinking about it in the firehouse. I had this thought going

40

through my head that I was living in Orange County for ten years and had never even seen a window cleaner. I couldn’t wait to get home to check the yellow pages. And just as I thought, there were only a few in there. So what makes window cleaning so attractive compared to other sideline jobs you’ve had? I like the freedom. I love working outdoors and the satisfaction you get with your finished product! Like a baker making a beautiful wedding cake! I hate it when we clean windows that are old and complete garbage, ones that even after cleaning to the best of your ability, still don’t look good enough. It's kind of like we lost a game to the other team. Sure, the homeowner loves it, but it doesn’t look perfect to you. And my other side jobsconstruction, security, limo driver, website business and windshield repair - I was jack of all trades and master of none until now! I’ve found my niche with window cleaning. Where did you learn the window cleaning game – from the internet? From someone else?

SHOPWINDOWCLEANINGRESOURCE.COM

862.266.0677

I learned mostly from the internet and John Orsinis' book. His book was actually good for me, because it covered all the basics. It was a good intro book. I found WCR when it started and just read posts for months. Chris and Alex answered any questions I had and the forums proved to be a wealth of information. If I had a question, I put it in the search bar, and it was usually both asked and answered already. I did this for a few months before I bought my stuff and did my home and friends' homes. How long have you been window cleaning? How’s it panning out for you? I’ve been cleaning since spring of 2007. It’s doing really well. Each year I get busier and busier. Is there such thing as too busy? I still have lots to learn on the business side, such as managing it better and maybe hiring a few employees. Do you own a WFP? I just bought an IPC Hydro Electric Cart and the new Blue Ettore (Gardiner) WFP. I bought them from Alex at WCR. I am really excited to get to use it. This will be my first year with

one. I’m hoping to get into the threeto-five story building with this puppy! It seems to me the WFP craze exploded in the last twelve months. I’m really looking forward to it! Would you say WCR has been instrumental in helping your business? Are you in the WCRA? WCR was and still is instrumental to my business. I actually would be lost without it. Everything from questions to learning new things can all be found on WCR. Yes, I did join the WCRA last year it's awesome. Shift-work must play havoc with your business – how do you cope? Actually, it's just the opposite. Shift work helps me. I know what my shifts are for the entire year. I just pull out my calendar and book everything on days I’m off. So at what point will you retire from the FDNY and start your real job? For the first time, I am actually thinking about retiring next year. I'll see how it

SHOPWINDOWCLEANINGRESOURCE.COM

862.266.0677

goes; it’s tough to leave something you love. Do you have any other add-ons to your window cleaning business? Other add-ons I currently do are pressure (soft) washing gutter cleaning and gutter whitening. Any add-ons for the future you’re considering? Yes, I’m going to be adding dryer vent cleaning (thanks to Mark Strange and his great posts) and also roof washing. I think that’s going to be a big hit for me. Aren't there constrictive laws for window cleaning operating in NY? I’m not too sure on the laws for that in NYC. I’m in Orange County, which is about fifty miles north of the city. City rules and laws are a lot different that local and state laws. As long as you have insurance and obey OSHA, you will be fine. I also obtained a business license which states that I'm registered to operate my business in Orange County. Why Dr. Squeegee? Because someone in Iowa already had Mr. Squeegee. Seriously, it was the first name that came to my head. When I went to get the domain, it was taken and expiring soon. I used my savvy computer tactics to obtain the domain name in a few months. I get lots of compliments on the name from customers. I know there are quite a few firefighters that take on second jobs – why is that?

42

It’s popular because we have so much time off in between our shifts. It’s not like we work less - we're still doing forty-eight hours a week, it's just that they are in twenty-four hour shifts. And since we don’t do it for the money, a second job is great for added income. Besides, I couldn’t imagine sitting around doing nothing for three or four days. That’s just not me. I know a lot of cops who work five days a week and do second jobs on weekends or after their day shifts. Were you at ground zero on that fateful day (9/11)? How has it affected you? Yes, I was there. It was the worst day of my life I lost fifteen firefighter brothers from my firehouse (Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9), not to mention countless other friends from other firehouses. It took a toll on me, but it made me really realize how fragile life is, and how it could be over in an instant. I try to live my life to the fullest and try not to sweat the small stuff. Have you ever rescued a window cleaner? I’ve been involved in a few rescues in window cleaners when I was in Manhattan. It does happen when the scaffold motors malfunction. The funny thing is that you would think the easiest way to rescue them is to break

SHOPWINDOWCLEANINGRESOURCE.COM

862.266.0677

The last thing I think of is how the day went, and would I have done anything differently? Oh, and did I put the garbage out? the glass and pull them in wherever they are stuck. Breaking the glass is actually a last resort for our operating procedures (in high rises). So ladders – do you avoid them or love them? I love ladders. I respect ladders! I use them, but if I can do a window without using it, I will. I like the old carpenter saying about cutting wood, “measure twice, cut once.” I use the same principle with ladder placement. I always double check and sometimes triple check my placement and footings. If it can’t be done safely on a ladder, I won’t do it. Although, I would be happy to use the WFP where applicable - instead of ladders. Do you have a window cleaning hero? I don’t know if I have a window cleaning hero. But I guess if I had to name someone, it would be John Orsini. Why John? I love his story, which could apply to millions of people today. It was a positive story about his life. He was heading face first into the ground and turned his life around with window cleaning. I actually spoke to him on the phone when I was reading his book, and he was a very nice guy. Do you ever have time to relax? Yes! From 2 am for 4 am, I do actually find time to relax. I love the ocean, I hunt in the fall, I fish, and love the Yankees and Giants. My family and I love to go camping. My relax time is generally in January and February. I basically shut down my business. Well, I don’t shut it down, it’s just that no one calls, except for a few commercial accounts I do. This is the time I use to catch up on office work, figure out my game plan, and watch some TV. You have a few employees now– where do you think will you be in ten years? In ten years, I hope my boys will be running the operation and that I will be collecting the money. I hope to have a few crews operating by then.

For me, the worst part is the windows not coming out like you hoped. I mean, I have gutter-cleaning customers that take three months to pay me. I hate that! But when you are not happy with your finished product, that's even worse! What’s one thing you won’t miss when you leave the FDNY? The one thing I won’t miss? That’s got to be the 2 am call where someone has a stomachache and calls the fire department and ambulance to drive them to the hospital. It happens every day of the year. If that’s what you have, get dressed, get in the cab, and go to the hospital. They use us like a taxi service. If it’s serious, it's no problem. We are there for you. But so many people abuse the system, and it’s sad. Last thing you think of when you shut your eyes at night? My wife will tell you there is never just one thing going on in my mind. I am always thinking ten things at once. I know it’s not good. But the last thing I think of is how the day went, and would I have done anything differently? Oh, and did I put the garbage out?

What’s the worst part of window cleaning?

What type of soap or Chemical is right for you? Hard Water Stains • Titan A-1 • Nano Ultra • Slayer Powder • Eagle Powder Rub • Glasstastic Hard water stains usually build up from sprinklers being allowed to hit glass surfaces or from water dripping down from concrete sided buildings. These are usually easy enough to remove with the chemicals listed below. The chemical can be applied with a white scrubby pad or steel wool. Then removed with a standard razor blade.

Glass Sealants • Envicoat • Nano-Ultra Once you have spent the time removing stains from the glass surface, it’s usually best to apply a sealant. This is especially important on jobs where hard water stains were caused by sprinklers. If the glass isn’t sealed, the stains will come back rapidly.

Oxidation • Bio Clean • Titan MDR

Screen burn and hazing are typically much stronger stains than the hard water stains discussed above. You will find though they can be removed with the same ease with a slightly stronger solution. The chemical can be applied with a white scrubby pad or steel wool, then removed with a standard razor blade.

Over Spray • Titan Oil Flo • Titan Cement Off Over spray is anything left over from a construction window cleaning job. It can include but is not limited to paint, stickers, residue, stucco, and cement. Oil Flo will help loosen up cement. A razor blade will be your best tool here. The chemicals listed will speed up the whole process significantly, making the job much more profitable for you.

Dirty Glass

Squeegee Drag

• Glass Gleam 3 • Glass Gleam 4 • Ettore Squeegee Off • Winsol APC • Unger The Pill • Unger Gel • Ecover Although dish soaps work for cleaning glass, they are not the best option. Professional soaps from Titan, Unger, Ettore and Winsol have been specifically designed for Professional window cleaners and produce superior results.

• Winsol Super Slip • Unger Easy Glide

A couple drops helps make your squeegee glide across glass surfaces easily. Great every day but especially helpful on hot days and in warmer climates.

Glass Restoration • One Restore • Winsol Crystal Clear Glass restoration is needed when dealing with a real baked-in aged stain. For this we recommend One Restore formally Safe Restore or Winsol Crystal Clear 550. We are dealing with hydrochloric acids here, so we always recommend testing a small area in the lower portion of the glass to make sure there is no bad reaction to the glass. On top of that we recommend rubber gloves and eye protection when using these products. The chemical can be applied with a white scrubby pad or steel wool, then removed with a standard razor blade.

August Discounts

Discounted Work Typical Seasonal Flux

Let's Make a Deal!

In my window-cleaning business, we run on the concept of supplyand-demand pricing. Our prices change throughout the year based on demand. In the height of the spring season, our prices are the highest, and the deepest discounts are offered in the slowest months in order to keep work on the schedule. I am typically not a fan of discounting work just to fill unused capacity, but due to the seasonality of the window cleaning business I am willing to do it in order to keep our workers busy. Our peak months are shown in the graph below. Notice how we go from being super busy to super slow to super busy again? In the spring, we invest a lot of time and money into

training and developing our workforce. Once August and September hit (our two naturally slowest months), if we don’t have steady work for our workers, they begin to look elsewhere for employment. This will be a big problem once October hits and the fall rush begins. I obviously don’t want to reinvest more time and money to retrain a whole new crop, so instead we discount our work during the two slower months in order to keep them working. For the most part, we see no profit in those two months, but it’s a loss I am willing to take to ensure a well-staffed fall season.

Let's listen in on a phone estimate in the All County Window Cleanings' sales room: Customer: Wow, I didn’t expect the price to be so high just to get my windows cleaned. The last guy who did my windows charged almost half of what you are asking. Salesgirl: I understand your concern; I assure you that we offer a very high quality service for the price. Aside from being insured up to two million dollars, we offer both same day and weekend service. All our employees are highly trained and experienced, have been background-checked and are drug-tested regularly. We also use the latest techniques and technologies to get your home serviced as quickly and safely as possible. On top of that, we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee; you won't pay a dime until you are completely satisfied. Customer: That sounds great and everything, but my husband will kill me if I spend that much on window cleaning. Salesgirl: Let me ask you, if you don’t mind - what happened to your old window cleaner; why didn't 50

you call him this year? Customer: Well, I actually did call him a few times, but his phone number appears to be disconnected. Salesgirl: I see - that happens from time to time. Well, I have an idea that might be a win/win for the both of us. It's June now, our busiest time of year, and once August hits, we slow down quite a bit - you know how it is, a lot of people take their vacations then. I can’t offer you the same price as your old window cleaner, because with prices like that, it makes it hard to run a legitimate business. However, I can meet you in the middle - if you schedule your appointment in August, we can do it for between what I quoted you and what your old window cleaner charged you. Customer: Okay, that sounds good – let's book it. Salesgirl: Great! I have an opening on August 7th; I can fit you in on our first appointment of the day at 7 am.

Three tools that make up your company's brand So you want to build a better brand for your company. How clearly is your company's image currently branded? In order to do this, we first must understand the difference between marketing, advertising, and identification. In part 1, I want to look at the three branding tools that make up your company's brand. In Part 2, we will discuss specific tips on how to use these tools to help build your company's brand. Branding tools 1. Marketing The American Marketing Association defines marketing as: "the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large." I believe marketing is the umbrella over PR, sales, and advertising. In this article, I would like to focus on the third area of marketing, advertising. 2. Advertising Advertising is the art of buying customers. Step 1 is to have a marketing strategy/plan. Step 2 is to keep track of your advertising and ask customers how they heard about your company. Step 3 is to calculate the acquisition costs of each customer. We do this by dividing the total advertising dollars spent by the number of customers acquired for each advertising campaign. Test, measure, and tweak your advertising to continually improve this number.

I believe small businesses need to be focusing on converting prospects into customers. When they hear about your business, e potential customers will be asking themselves, "How does this benefit me? What's in it for me?" Make sure all your advertising campaigns reflect these concerns.. 3. Identification If a few prospects call because they saw your logo or business name somewhere, that's a good start. Using your logo or business name for identification is completely different than using it for advertising purposes. What do you want your audience to feel when they see your logo or business name? Achieving this successfully is 80% of your brands job. If they feel appropriately about your brand, they'll reach out and contact you, which starts the other 20%.

How do you handle your direct mail each time you send it? How far in advance do you plan?

We have talked a lot about direct mail and flier distribution in the past issues of WCBO. Those who have been following along know that I am a big fan of direct mail. From what I have observed, when a company decides to do a direct mail campaign, they pick one date in the spring and mail out all the pieces at once. I prefer trickling them out in a slower, more methodical fashion. We mail out weekly over a nine-month period all year long. From March 21st to December 21st, every Tuesday we take a load of mailers to the post office. Trickling them out like this ensures a steady stream of work throughout your entire window-cleaning season. It also prevents unnatural, unmanageable spikes in your company's workload. Let's say, for example, you are committing to mail out 50,000 pieces in

the spring season. Mailing all of them out at once would be disastrous if you were not prepared. The following problems would most likely occur: • Laying out that much money at once would kill your cash flow. • You would get a massive influx of work that you most likely wouldn’t be able to handle. • You would be answering the phone for two weeks straight instead of cleaning glass. • You would not be able to get to everyone quickly enough and would likely create a ton of work for your competitors. A better solution would be to divide the 50,000 pieces up into twelve weeks and send out approximately 4,000 per week. It means more trips to the post office and more preparation, but the steady, controlled stream of work you

This chart is an example of what we lay out for All County Window Cleaning each season. This doesn't show it, but we also get more detailed and add the rural and carrier information we receive from the post office. Each mailing is planned months in advance and altered as it gets closer depending on how busy we are. This is a great way to plan ahead on your budget as well.

will receive will make it all worth it. Planning out a quarter in advance also helps you commit to a steady advertising program. It’s very easy when you’re busy in the spring to forget to continue to advertise. It has happened to me several times in the past, but once I got a set program like this in place, positive changes immediately happened. I cannot stress enough how important it is to continue a steady advertising program, especially when you are at your busiest. At my company, All County Window Cleaning, we usually plan a quarter in advance. It's as simple as laying it out in a spreadsheet, like you see to the right. Be sure to check out last month’s direct mail article from Issue 8 and download our free direct mail manual for tips on preparation, cost savings, and selecting the ideal location to send your mailers.

What is Pure Water? Tap water is purified and pushed through a pole. The glass surface is scrubbed by the pole and brush. Once all of the impurities have been removed from the water, you no longer need to use soaps or a squeegee. With the power of pure water, simply rinsing the glass after scrubbing leaves an excellent streak and spot free glass surface.

The Advantages of Pure Water Cleaning Safety.

Efficiency.

There’s less ladder and scaffold work. Plus less heavy equipment to drag around.

Water fed pole work is faster than ladder work so you can clean more windows in less time. More windows equals more money!

Environmentally Friendly.

No soap or chemicals are needed.

New Markets.

Glass that was once unreachable can now be reached safely from the ground.

“The Science” How is Pure water going to clean dirty glass? A DI tank is filled with positively and negatively charged resins. When water passes through it captures the impurities in the water, the water comes out in a pure state. What happens to the dirt? It can’t just rinse off. Something has to happen to it in order for the glass to become clean. Pure water wants to return to it’s “impure state”. When the glass is scrubbed and rinsed, it pulls all the dirt from the glass surface. Once you have agitated the glass surface with your brush so much that all that is left is the pure water and all the dirt removed from the surface, the glass will dry spot free.

How do you know when a pole is right for you? When picking a pole there are 3 questions to think about: Height / Length What types of jobs are you going to tackle? Are they 1-2 story homes? Low rise commercial? 4 - 12 ft.

Pole will reach ground floor windows.

13 - 24 ft.

Pole will reach most second floor windows.

25 - 35 ft.

Pole will reach all second floor windows.

35 - 45 ft.

Pole will reach all third floor windows.

45 - 65 ft.

Pole will reach fourth story windows and above.

Material What material would you prefer to work with or have your employees working with on the job? Top of the Line - A Carbon Fiber Pole is considered top of the line. They are extremely lightweight and stiff. Middle of the Line Durable - An extremely durable Carbon Fiber Pole. Not as light as the top of the line, but strong enough to run over with your vehicle. Middle of the Line Hybrid - Carbon Fiber / Fiberglass Poles. A blend of Fiberglass and Carbon Fiber combines some of the weight savings and stiffness of a carbon fiber with the afford-ability of a Fiberglass pole. Economy Line - Fiberglass / Metal Poles.

What’s Most Important to You?

Super lightweight, cost or durability?

Pick a Pure Water System that is right for you We wish it was as simple as plugging your pole into a garden hose and getting right to work. Unfortunately 99.9% of the time, the water you’re using needs to be purified with a tank or a system in order to dry spot free. Although tap water looks clean, it actually contains a lot of dissolved chemicals and minerals. These chemicals and minerals are what leave residue and spots on glass. Although the DI Tank method appears to be the most cost effective, you need to figure in the cost of resin recharge. You can get your DI Tanks recharged at any local Culligan, Siemens, or right here at WCR. Window Cleaning Resource .Com 862-266-0677

Get informed! Picking out a purification method and a pole is a tough choice. When I picked out and bought my first system in 2004 there really wasn’t anyone to turn to for answers. Fortunately you have us! Give us a call anytime and we would be happy to help you. We speak to our potential buys an average of 10 times before they purchase. So don’t feel bad calling and asking lots of questions, that’s what we are here for. This is a big investment and it’s best to go into it fully informed. Damian Casillas

Just wanted to say thanks again to Alex Lambrinides. Went out to do a bid today and decided it would need some specialized equipment. While there on the site I called to ask Alex some questions and he gave me the straight scoop. He didn't try to sell me something that might not have worked just to make a sale. He just gave me real information to make the right decision. Thanks again Alex, I really appreciate your honest evaluation. Good looking out!!

Tablets In the Field Today we are talking to John Lee, the world’s foremost expert on water-fed poles. John also has a very successful window cleaning business in Tennessee, which he primarily runs from a tablet.

Choosing the iPad was simple!

I have the iPhone and MiniMac and everything syncs with the iCloud. So if I do anything like set an appointment on the calendar, add a contact, download a song on iTunes, or snap a picture, it is automatically added on all three devices instantly.

Any limitations?

So far, the only one I have found is [brand name] Flash Player; if a website has flash, it it will not run on the iPad or iPhone. I understand Apple feels it is a security risk.

What are the advantages of a tablet over a laptop?

The biggest advantages are the size and the weight. I used to lug a briefcase around with a laptop and it would hurt my shoulders. With the iPad, I can carry it under my arm and it takes up almost no space on the table or desk. 82

What do you think of the new iPad 3?

It has over-the-top screen resolution. It exceeds HD screens. The text is razor sharp, and photos and video quality is great. The 5 MP iSight camera is the best on the market, and with 4G LTE, it is fast. I looked at the competition and nothing comes near it.

We’ve talked before about some of the physical dangers of hot temperatures while working. But there are some often forgotten dangers that can catch us off-guard and cause us problems, ranging from minor irritation to life-altering injuries. There are easy ways to protect yourself from these dangers. So, to keep this simple, we’ll take a two-step approach by listing the danger and then the simple solution. Wow, That’s Hot! One of the most surprising things you may experience in hot temperatures is the radiant heating of our tools that are in direct sunlight. We can add convection heating as well, if we leave 88

them on a surface like concrete in direct sunlight for a while. Danger – If we leave our poles (pure water or traditional) lying against the structure while we go back to the vehicle or take a call for a few minutes, we could come back to a very hot pole. Without thinking, we could pick up the pole and get a nasty little surprise - it’s burning hot! Depending on how long it’s been there, it can cause us a rather uncomfortable sting or a more severe burn. This can be true of any metal squeegees or ladders we work with. Solution – The easiest fix is to make sure we keep things out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Of course, that may not be an option, so for those situations wearing a set of work gloves can protect us from those hot surfaces. Personally, I

SHOPWINDOWCLEANINGRESOURCE.COM

862.266.0677

like the finger-less gloves, but there are several lightweight options out there (Unger has a set of water fed pole gloves available) and they come with the added benefit of reducing fatigue when doing a lot of water fed pole work. BZZZZZ! As the spring weather brings out those beautiful flowers and blooming trees, it also brings out nasty little stinging insects like bees, wasps, and hornets. Danger – We are constantly doing work on areas of buildings and homes where insects like to set up shop. When we go up the ladder or bring our pole-mounted tools into their “territory,” we often find ourselves attacked by one or dozens of these angry little insects. At best, we are looking at days of uncomfortable welts, but if we are severely allergic, it could cost us our life. Solution – Doing a thorough inspection of the area we are working in often reveals their nests (although they sometimes set up home in small crevices we might overlook). By being aware, we can take a little more time, and by working more slowly, we might be able to avoid agitating them. For those of us not severely allergic to stinging insects, there are a myriad of products out there to alleviate the sting. Carrying one of these in your work vehicles is a good idea. If you fall under the category of severely allergic, hopefully you have what is commonly called an epipen (Epinephrine injector) and carry it with you at all times. If you’re not sure, I strongly suggest you ask your doctor about making sure since some of us work alone and that would be a bad time to find out how allergic you are.. I See Spots Don’t you hate how a simple task like cleaning a pane of glass can get so complicated or annoying by overpowering sunlight reflecting right back at you? Danger – While a nice sunny day usually puts us in a good mood, there are two dangers from working on glass where

the sun is glaring right back at us. The first danger is that great glow we get. Although I appreciate a good tan as much as anyone else, it can quickly become a severe sunburn (or worse for those of fairer complexion) and after years it can lead to skin cancer. The second danger is a more subtle one – eye damage. If you’ve ever gone away from a plate of glass and needed to take a little time for the spots in your eyes to go away, you know what I’m talking about. The bright light is annoying, but there is an unseen danger that will do far more damage: UV radiation. The ultraviolet radiation being reflected off the glass can eventually cause severe eye damage and even blindness. Solution – The simplest way to solve both these problems is to do the job in a way so that we aren’t working on windows in direct sunlight. Of course, that may not always be possible, so there are a couple other things we can do if we have to work on glass in direct sun. For your skin, a good sunscreen with a high sun protection factor and UVA and UVB (types of ultraviolet radiation) protection can be helpful. Limiting the amount of exposed skin is also advised, so long-sleeved shirts and pants can help. For eye protection, you should invest in a good set of sunglasses - not just any sunglasses, though. We deal with two issues when working on bright glass – glare and ultraviolet radiation. Polarized lenses take care of the glare but not UV, so the lenses also need an anti-UV coating. Minor or Major While most of the things we talked about here are minor inconveniences, it would be foolhardy for us to ignore the larger dangers. After all, we only get one set of eyes, and cancer of any kind is nothing to take lightly. Take some precautions, carry a few extra supplies for hot weather, and adjust some of your work habits so you can have a safe and profitable season. Direct Mail Marketing

Don't forget to download our totally free direct mail manual. Here is a short snippet below of what you'll find in it. It covers eddm, postage, addressing and more!

1Research! 2 Business!

Getting Down to

Deciding who to mail to

My theory has always been the people with the most disposable income, that live in great neighborhoods are those most likely to be consumers of professional cleaning services. This applies to Window Cleaners, Pressure Washers, Gutter Cleaners, Roof Washers, Carpet Cleaners etc..

Using MelissaData.com to figure out specific carrier routes

Melissa Data 1) Navigate to www.melissadata.com 2) On the bottom right corner of the page you’ll see something that looks like this. Click on Free ZIP Code & Address Info. Resources Free ZIP Code & Address Info Free trials & demos Get our newsletters Article library What’s new Postal & industry news Favorite Authors

1) Figure out on a map your official service area. Draw a bog circle around your home base touching out as far as you are willing to travel for a job. 2) Record the town names from within the circle into spreadsheet software. List out all the town names and zip codes into individual cells down the left side. 3) Using the free website: zipskinny.com research the towns in the spread sheets and record each zip codes median household income into the spreadsheet next to the appropriate town. 4) Sort that spread sheet from highest to lowest median income. You now have a list of towns you are willing to service listed out by those with the most disposable income and the least disposable income. 5) We take the top 10% wealthiest from our list and target them directly with focused direct mail campaigns.

3) On the next page, click ZIP Code LookUps 4) Enter a ZIP Code from your research (we used 90210 as an example)

Enter ZIP Code, ZIP+4 Code, City Name, Phone Number or Area Code. 90210 Search

5) Information will come up for that particular zip code

Scratch removal

GlassRenu Contractor Grade System

WCRA Members receive $500 Off on their GlassRenu purchase!!

$2,495.00 Hear what GlassRenu users say about the system: “As window cleaners, my brother and I were consistently noticing scratches on the windows we were cleaning. When we decided to investigate purchasing a scratch removal system we noticed that almost every system claimed it could get the job done, yet offered only before and after pictures, minimal or fuzzy videos and did not offer a guarantee that the product would work. Once I found GlassRenu that changed. The videos clearly showed how the product works, the sales staff was quick to answer questions and they offered a performance guarantee. Within the first month of operation we not only covered the cost of the system, but were getting amazing results every time. The GlassRenu Scratch Removal System does what they say it will, and was a great investment for our company.” D.C Illinois “After getting the GlassRenu System I was up and running within two weeks, and I actually paid for my system with my first job. Now after only a few months I have booked jobs for the next 8 weeks and have to turn down jobs simply because I don’t have the time to service my existing customers and all of the new customers as well. On average I am making $100.00 an hour with little to no overhead!” Jamie Dunjey, True View Glass Restoration.
