ordering portals. With Business Micros’ backing, we think it has the potential to be even better, and we will certainly be looking to invest further in both the team and the product range.”

The move brings together two of the sector’s biggest digital specialists; and demonstrates the scale of Business Micros’ continuing ambition as it looks to strengthen its market leading position in its 41st year.

For customers of Business Micros and EDM, Graeme says it is very much business as usual. He adds: “Customers probably won’t notice any differences in the short term but, over time, we are confident that they will see some really significant improvements in how we both operate. For instance, EDM will now have access to the datasets held within Business Micros to make their portal development quicker and easier, while Business Micros will be able to utilise the digital design expertise at EDM to enhance the interface on many of our products.

Graeme Bailey, Managing Director of Business Micros, says the investment in EDM will have long term benefits for both businesses, giving them the opportunity to share expertise and resources, as well as to develop new opportunities together. He says: “EDM is already a really good business, with a great team and really exciting products, particularly in terms of its pricing and 4 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

“We’ve got some really exciting new plans as well which will make the

most of the obvious synergy between the two businesses, building on our individual strengths and making us even better as a group.”

Moving forward, EDM will operate as a separate business within the Business Micros group, in the same way that BM Aluminium, the specialist aluminium software business, has done since 2007. Paul Callaghan, EDM’s Managing Director, says that he sees only positives for EDM and its customers following the acquisition: “We’re becoming part of the industry’s biggest software provider, which has spent over 40 years building a deserved reputation for service and innovation. That’s a really exciting opportunity for us and gives us the platform we need to push on to the next phase in our growth.” www.businessmicros.co.uk www.theconsultancy.co.uk

FIT Show Reverts To

Biennial Frequency SupaLite Lands Lancashire Double

Glazing As New

Approved Fabricator

SupaLite, the Preston-based tiled roof manufacturer is proud to unveil Lancashire Double Glazing as the newest addition to their nationwide fabricator network.

Organisers of FIT Show have announced the decision to revert the show to a biennial format, with the next event confirmed to take place on Tuesday 25th to Thursday 27th May 2021 at the NEC Birmingham. There will therefore be no FIT Show in 2020. The announcement follows continuing unprecedented political and economic uncertainty, which, whilst recently becoming more positive, has driven the decision to take FIT Show back to its most successful format. “The conditions that prompted the announcement of a FIT Show in 2020 have all changed, even since we made the announcement at the 2019 event”, commented FIT Show Event Director, Nickie West. “We have listened to the many active voices in the FIT Show community and will return the event to its most popular frequency, and everything that has made it a success. It is with huge disappointment, and with a genuine desire to preserve the long-term success of FIT Show for the entire industry, that we have made this decision.” The organisers report that support for 2021 has been, and continues to be, very positive. “Where com-

panies have been unable to commit to 2020, they have confirmed they will be a part of 2021. We can now pursue that enthusiasm and focus on delivering a fantastic FIT Show next year.” Added Nickie. Co-founder and FIT Show Director, Paul Godwin commented: “I believe the announcement to concentrate on 2021 is the right decision. The whole team is now focussed on ensuring FIT Show returns to its roots.” Matthew Glover, who launched the show with Paul in 2013 added: “The FIT Show changed how the glass and glazing industry does business. Trading conditions have been difficult and, whilst the 2020 event was announced in good faith, it has not proved possible to deliver an event of the stature the industry deserves and we will get back to the format the industry believes is the best for them.” “We are working closely with all of our partners to ensure that the move over to the 2021 timeline is as seamless as possible. I’d like to thank everyone for their continued support.” Concluded Nickie. FIT Show will return to the NEC 25 – 27 May 2021, occupying halls 2 & 3.

With over three decades of experience, Lancashire Double Glazing is well established as one of the region’s most trusted home improvement specialists. LDG has built their strong reputation by offering customers a full range of home improvements including windows and doors, conservatories, orangeries and extensions. The new partnership means the team at LDG can now manufacture and install SupaLite’s renowned range of replacement conservatory and orangery roof systems. With just six miles between their respective headquarters, the new partnership also presents clear logistical benefits too. Steve Hacking, Managing Director of SupaLite comments: “Not only are we incredibly proud to partner with a neighbour and a great local business, but we are thrilled to be working with one of the UK’s largest and most successful home improvement companies. “It’s a great testament to the strength of the SupaLite range to see a respected firm like LDG making the switch. They join a nationwide network of fabricators and installers who are benefitting from the valuable retro-fit and newbuild opportunities presented by the SupaLite range. We’re delighted to welcome LDG aboard and wish them every success in the year ahead.” www.supaliteroof.co.uk WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020 5

Bi-Folding Doors To See

Post-Brexit Bounce In 2020? A new report into the prospects for bi-folding doors through to 2023, paints a picture of growth within an increasingly complex market.

different sectors of the market, including a shift in pricing structure within the industry itself”, explained Jane.

“Increased competition and lower price point, combined with growth in other products, is starting to exert an influence, particularly on higher end sales.”

While forecasting headline increases, the Bi-fold Doors Market Report – UK 2020 to 2023 from AMA Research, suggests significant shifts in prices and sector reach, defined by a series of drivers. These extend from a growing pressure on price-point in trade supply and potential challenges from other product areas, to consumer confidence post-Brexit, and its impact on home improvement and new build sectors. Jane Tarver, Senior Research Analyst AMA Research said: “We saw market growth in bi-folds slow last year in comparison to very positive growth between 2014 and 2018, something subdued by the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. “We perhaps now have more clarity about the UK’s direction of travel, and we expect this to lead to sustained growth through to 2023, albeit at a slightly lower rate.” At a headline level AMA is forecasting growth in the bi-folding door market across sectors of 7% this year [2020] but it argues that this may slow to 5% by the end of the three-year period. Nonetheless, this represents total market value of £113m by 2023. Aluminium remains the most popular material type, with the majority of bi-folding doors supplied, as expected, as replacements for older inline sliding products. The report, however, identifies a 6 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

“The picture is complex. The market is in a sense ‘taking away with one hand but giving with the other’. It’s about understanding which, because what is clear is that we’re going through a period of change.” UK Market for Bi-Fold Doors End Use Sector Mix 2014 and 2019 % by value The authors of the Bi-fold Doors Market Report – UK 2020 to 2023, also point to external factors, which may impact on growth and the sectors of the market that will

deliver it. This includes the impact of the Brexit ‘hiatus’, accompanying lower levels of consumer confidence – and as a consequence growth – in 2019, which it said may lead to higher growth this year. The report also provides an analysis of the impact of this on the housing market. This includes the drop in the number of house sales seen last year – something that it suggests has not been a complete negative for the industry as homeowners improve rather than move. Drawing on forecasts for the housing market, the report also looks at prospects for new build, and outside housing, highlights opportunities in commercial sectors. Jane concluded: “The real positive here is that the bi-folding door market will continue to see growth through to 2023. What we’d say, however, is your proposition and offer isn’t necessarily going to be right going forward simply because it’s worked in the past. “There are a number of factors which mean that won’t be the case with some sectors of the market delivering fewer opportunities while the yield from others will increase substantially.” AMA Research is a specialist publisher of a wide range of market reports and provider of marketing research and consultancy services, specialising in ad-hoc and commissioned research projects. This includes specialist door and window reports including: Domestic Replacement Doors and Windows; Door and Window Fabricators; Commercial Glazing; Commercial and Industrial Doors and Shutters; Door and Window Fittings. TRADE NEWS was saved from the heating system that was used to heat up the room. “When we were measuring the thermal transfer through the window we found about a 16% energy saving in our thermal comfort room in terms of how much heat energy was used when Thermocill was in place. Also the room heated up around 23% quicker when Thermocill was used.”

Inventor Keith Rimmer shows off the simple Thermocill components outside the University of Salford’s Energy House

Ground-Breaking

Thermocill Could Save Householders Hundreds Of Pounds, Says Inventor Scientists’ findings show that a simple yet ground-breaking device could save householders hundreds of pounds a year on their heating bills – and reduce the UK’s carbon emissions. Environment experts at the University of Salford put Thermocill, which is made entirely from recycled plastic, through exhaustive tests in their Energy House thermal comfort laboratory, part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. Thermocill is fitted above the radiator and under the window board in a home. It redirects the heat under the board and through a vent vertically in front of the double-glazed unit attacking the Thermal Hole within the building envelope. This addresses heat loss through the window thus heating the room more and retaining the heat longer. The scientists’ findings showed that: Thermocill has the potential to save heating energy depending on the room setpoint temperature of between 16% at 21°C degrees and 3.3% at 23°C, thus operating 10 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

efficiently at a lower room temperature setpoint which meets today’s standards. Thermocill reduces the warm-up period in a room by up to 23% at a lower room temperature setpoint (e.g. 21°C in 78 minutes compared to 95 minutes without Thermocill). Thermocill diverts warm current towards the window and makes the air temperature in the window recess higher regardless of the room temperature, therefore not affecting the room temperature in any way. Thermocill reduces heat loss through double-glazed windows (U-value) by up to 3% at 21°C and 1% at 23°C increasing the double-glazed unit’s efficiency. Dr Richard Fitton, research lead at the University of Salford’s Energy House who led the research, said: “Thermocill is an interesting technology that we had not seen before.” He added: “We tested Thermocill by looking at a typical double-glazed window that you might find in any home. We then looked at the thermal transfer between the inside and the outside and how much energy

Thermocill is the brainchild of award-winning inventor Keith Rimmer who said: “The University of Salford tests confirmed everything I believed. Thermocill can revolutionise the fenestration and home heating industries.” Mechanical engineer Keith, who won an Ernst & Young North West Entrepreneur of the Year Award for his EcoPod heating system, added: “Thermocill saves energy consumption by reducing heat loss and doesn’t use any form of energy itself. “It is manufactured from plastic waste including plastic bottle tops. It is truly sustainable and where fitted will massively reduce the property’s carbon footprint.” He added: “Another aspect, which the report doesn’t look at, is that Thermocill also alleviates condensation from the internal glazed unit which is a problem of many new efficient window systems.” Thermocill, patent pending (No 1820279.6) and trademarked, is aimed at the housing market and can be fitted retrospectively into properties or integrally into new builds. Keith also sees Thermocill being an energy and cost-saver in multi-occupancy buildings like hospitals, hotels, homes for the elderly and office blocks. It extends from 125mm to 250mm fitting the most common size window boards and comes in three width sizes 500mm, 300mm and 100mm, all of which can be used as multiples to fit the majority of window sizes.

TRADE NEWS The rear ventilation outlet of Thermocill is also adjustable to allow different thicknesses of decorative window board finishes – timber, MDF, plastic or conglomerate and tiled finishes from 10mm to 26mm. When Thermocill is fitted no part will be on show apart from the outlet grill at the back of the window board.

Continued Growth

At Leka Systems

The eureka moment for Thermocill came when Keith called at a friend’s home for a cup of tea. Keith revealed: “I was sitting in the lounge. It was a cold night and I was looking towards the window and noticed the vertical blinds moving. My friend asked ‘What’s up Keith?’ and I just blurted ‘I’ve got an idea!’ He added: “I could see the convection of warm air from the radiator was trying to get to the window but it couldn’t get there because of the width of the window board and the direction of the heat flow. I went to my car and got my digital thermometer and took some readings around the window area and within 10 minutes I had the idea for Thermocill firmly fixed in my head.” Following validation by the University of Salford, Keith believes the potential for Thermocill is so great that he is now looking for a manufacturing partner or licensee to help take the product to the open market. Now, Keith and the University of Salford Energy House team plan to computer model Thermocill using the data to enhance its design, which will also optimise the product’s efficiency. The University of Salford’s Energy House is a whole house energy efficiency test facility in Salford which undertakes ground-breaking work on energy technologies and their effects with some of the leading manufacturers in the field. Keith has given his permission to the university to use the data to form an academic paper.

Conservatory roof innovators, Leka Systems have reported a 30% year on year sales growth for its roofing products. This upturn is driven by continued demand for the company’s Leka Warm Roof, Leka Orangery roof and the new LEKA xi Conservatory Base System. Rhys Hoddinott, Director of Leka Systems, said: “The demand for our Leka roofs has been superb as more fabricators and installers see for themselves the benefits these products can deliver.” The company says the LEKA Warm Roof delivers super thermal efficiency thanks to the unique GRP construction, which results in U values from 0.12W/m²K. The roof is available in virtually any design, can incorporate Velux roof lights and offers superb span and pitch capabilities, giving it ‘incredible versatility’. It’s good for installers too, claims LEKA: there are fewer elements to install than on a traditional solid conservatory roof, so on-site installation typically takes just two to three

days, including removing the old conservatory roof. The LEKA Orangery Roof has the same exceptional thermal efficiency as the Warm Roof and is quick and easy to install, taking two men one day (excluding the lantern and roof membrane). The range was recently joined by the Leka xi Conservatory Base System which was launched in 2019. It’s a modular system that’s tailored to homeowner and installer requirements and is constructed using a LEKA base, LEKA walls and the LEKA roof system. There are three- or four-sided options, so it can be used for both home extensions and standalone garden rooms. Rhys concludes: “We’re delighted to see this growth. Our range of products offers both fabricators and installers a competitive advantage and tap into the growing trend for solid conservatory roof constructions.” www.lekasystems.co.uk WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020 11

A leading composite door manufacturer and PVCu panel supplier is celebrating its 25th birthday this year. Vista has been supplying fabricators across the UK and Europe since 1995 and, thanks to continued investment, its quality as a supplier has stood the test of time. The Wirral-based company is one of the longest standing infill panel manufacturers and came to the fore in the composite door market with the XtremeDoor, claimed as one of the most high-performance composite doors currently on the market. Vista’s Managing Director Keith Sadler said: “It sounds like a cliché but when you can combine quality products and good service with fast lead times then you are always going to stand out,” said Keith. “Longevity in this market is something to be acknowledged. With Vista, our 10 year Guarantee means something, we’ve stood the test of time now and have honoured two and a half decades of warranties which gives our customers a huge sense of confidence when purchasing our products and that really helps us approach prospective accounts who are considering switching to us,” continued Keith. www.vistapanels.co.uk 12 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

to share ideas in an open and transparent way. This debate focussed on how we can change the perception of glass in the trade, commercial and retail markets and it made for a very lively discussion.

The ‘Purplex Debate’, held on January 28th, focused on adding value among insulating glass manufacturers and saw senior directors from across the supply chain discuss ways the industry can promote the innovation and quality that goes into modern IGUs more effectively.

“The reality for IGU manufacturers is they are producing better quality than ever before, but their products are often commoditised. There is a clear lack of awareness of the innovation that goes into modern glass units, and we discussed ways the industry can create more value and ultimately help IGU companies achieve better margins.”

Sam Cross, account director at Purplex, chaired the debate and posed a series of questions to the delegates. Sam comments: “The purpose of the ‘Purplex Debate’ is to provide a platform for experts 14 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

Those attending included directors from Energy Saving Glass, Double R Glass and Roofing Systems, Euroview Architectural Glass, N&C Glass,

Delegates debated whether such a group could form part of an existing organisation or be an independent entity, and who should drive the initiative to get it off the ground. “The debate raised some big questions which cannot be solved in an hour-long roundtable, but the issues have now been raised and I’m sure the conversation will continue over the coming weeks and months,” Sam added. Latest Electric

Van Investment

Scotland’s Minister for Business, Fair Work and Skills, Jamie Hepburn MSP, has welcomed the addition of new 100% electric vans to the CMS Window Systems vehicle fleet, along with its investment in its electric vehicle infrastructure.

6 Day Doors, the latest venture from Essex based the Chigwell Group, promises to deliver aluminium bi-fold doors in under a week. Where most fabricators offer aluminium bi-folds with lead times of two to three weeks if not longer, the new business can provide them in just six days – and if it doesn’t, your next order is half-price. “6 Day Doors does what it says on the tin,” says Managing Director Sunny Singh. “We’re offering the Smart Visofold 1000 bi-fold in grey, white and black – and when you buy one from us, it’ll be with you in six days. The door is available in other colours of course, but on a longer lead time.” The obvious question of course is how have 6 Day Doors managed to commit to such a short lead time? “The truth is, there is no big se-

cret,” Sunny explains. “Frankly, I think the industry has got used to having to wait nearly three weeks for aluminium doors, and so no-one’s felt the need to invest and speed that process up. “What we’ve done is simple. Using the resources and expertise of the wider Chigwell Group, we’ve acquired some cutting-edge machinery and manned it with some experienced and highly motivated fabricators. It’s certainly not easy, but it’s not hugely complex either – if you’ve got the willpower to do it, it can be done.” Sunny concludes: “If you want to benefit from the huge demand for quality aluminium door products without the lengthy lead times, give us a call.” The company is offering other products on longer lead-times, including the Smart Visofold 6000 bi-fold and Visoglide Plus patio door. www.6daydoors.co.uk

The company, which is said to be Scotland’s largest designer, manufacturer and installer of PVCu and aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling, has taken delivery of a fully branded Nissan e-NV200 van, following the successful trial of its first electric vehicle over the last 18 months. With a range of up to 187 miles on a single charge, these vans are ideal for serving CMS customers in the areas within close proximity to its main Castlecary factory and HQ near Glasgow, giving ample scope for emissions-free site deliveries throughout the working day. In addition to the vans currently in service, CMS is looking at how longer range and larger vans could be added to its fleet as the technology rapidly evolves. CMS has also added further plug-in charging points at Castlecary, bringing the total to four, with charging facilities also soon to be installed at its East Kilbride and Kirkcaldy sites. This charging infrastructure will also support the growing numbers of visitors to its sites who travel using electric vehicles. www.cmswindows.com WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020 15

Shelforce Boosts Manufacturing Efficiency

And Quality Assurance

With Rapierstar Fastener specialist Rapierstar is providing extensive support to window and door manufacturer Shelforce to streamline fastener usage and ensure its workforce is fully supported to achieve the highest quality finished products.

The Birmingham-based manufacturer, which specialises in the supply of windows and doors to the social housing, new build and schools sectors, is already benefiting from a 25% reduction in the number of different types of fasteners it uses following a Rapierstar fastener ‘Health Check’. This identified instances where a single fastener type and size could be used for multiple purposes throughout the assembly, a move that has reduced fastener stockholding, made ordering easier and simplified manufacture. Given the unique nature of Shelforce in its provision of employment for people living with a wide 18 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

range of disabilities, its production lines are configured in a way that enables operatives to clearly identify which fasteners to use for each part of the window or door’s construction. Here, Rapierstar has helped by not only reducing the number of different types of fasteners being used – and thus the scope for selecting the wrong one – but also by producing colour-coded charts for every workstation so fabricators have a quick and easy-to-use fastener reference guide in front of them at all times. Rapierstar is supplying Shelforce with an all-austenitic stainless steel suite of fasteners for the manufacture of PVCu windows and doors using Eurocell systems. By correctly applying these premium quality fasteners, which are designed to offer the highest level of resistance to corrosion, Shelforce has established a market-leading proposition, complete with a clear audit trail to give customers

Howard Trotter, Business Manager at Shelforce said: “The process changes that Rapierstar have helped us to implement have enabled us to further improve manufacturing efficiency and optimise quality, while at the same time multi-skilling workers so they are able to work on any part of the production line as required. This ensures we remain competitive in the market with a range of windows and doors that offer significant quality benefits, supported by technical documentation and test data that satisfies client audit requirements, which our loyal and growing customer base really values.” Mark Calpin, Technical Sales Consultant at Rapierstar added: “We’re delighted that Shelforce have chosen Rapierstar as their supply chain partner for fasteners and we look forward to supporting them wherever we can as they develop and grow. Bringing fresh insights to their fastener usage, our technical support is designed to help Shelforce maintain its reputation for consistently high quality finished products, whilst at the same time delivering important productivity benefits.” As the window and door sector’s specialist fastener supplier, Rapierstar is uniquely positioned to support manufacturers like Shelforce to implement a fastener strategy that ticks all the boxes. In addition to the corrosion resistance benefits that austenitic stainless steel fasteners offer, the products used by Shelforce are also all CE marked and every batch is tested against numerous performance criteria at Rapierstar’s in-house test centre to maintain quality consistency. Rapierstar is also supporting Shelforce’s development of its aluminium window and door range, including a bi-fold door option. www.rapierstar.com

Across The UK

Window and door manufacturer Quickslide has made the decision to put the ethos of ‘home grown’ at the heart of a new investment this year, as they announce a new partnership with local blinds supplier Morley Glass. The move will be of major interest to customers, as the decreased distance and an enhanced product offering equals shorter lead times and an improved turnaround.

owners wanting to make more of a statement through their windows, the choice of bright primary colours provide a great alternative.”

“Our new relationship with Morley Glass began back in December to ensure that we were ready to hit the ground running with orders in January” explained Managing Director Ben Weber. “When it comes to integral blinds, our customers are increasingly requesting wider variation in both colour and operating systems. We have taken on two of Morley’s core manual control products; the ‘C System’ which features a rotational cord and a cordless magnetic slider system, known as the ‘SV System’. Each of these are available in traditional, timeless colours including white, creams and greys, but for home-

Additionally, with less than ten miles between the two factory sites the move guarantees Quickslide a reduction in their carbon footprint – an aim which Ben intends to fulfil across the company’s entire supply chain:

The slim control style of the Morley Glass devices makes them ideal for integrating blinds into any product across the comprehensive Quickslide range; a benefit Ben expects to attract new business over the coming months.

“Climate activism is so very poignant right now, and it is absolutely everyone’s responsibility to confront environmentally threatening issues. The proximity of Morley’s premises to us means that we can support the wider cause to be eco-friendly by having vehicles on the road for less time, and making more efficient journeys.”

20 Years With Spectus

Armstrong Has #Comealong To Kommerling Armstrong Industries is the latest PVCu window and door manufacturer that has decided to #ComeAlong to KÖMMERLING, having changed from another systems company, with whom they had been an established customer for 23 years. The Coventry based manufacturer has been in business since 1996, operating in the South East, Midlands and Home Counties and has already started production the KÖMMERLING 70 system in the form of C70 and O70, along with the enhanced PremiLine patio door. The decision to make the change was according to managing director John Armstrong, ‘a decision that I should have made several years ago, yet the re-ignited brand this year, was the real catalyst for change.’ He also went on to highlight an important business message in that ‘they tried to build a price orientated business and it was seemingly an unsustainable race to the bot-

tom. Now with investment in what I believe is the best systems house and new German Rotox machinery, we want to build our brand at the upper end of the market as do our valued customers.’ Armstrong Industries will also look to be actively promoting their in-house paint line which enables them to finish any KÖMMERLING window or door to RAL and even Farrow & Ball colours.’ Gareth Jones, managing director of profine UK and the KÖMMERLING brand commented, ‘we’re thrilled to bring Armstrong Industries into the KÖMMERLING family and this is yet another business that has recognised the re-awakening of the brand in the UK. We’ve got bold plans for 2020 with Fensterbau, several events including a golf day and the launch of an installer scheme to help support all of our manufacturing partners including our new ones such as Armstrong Industries.’ www.kommerling.co.uk

IG Doors in Blackwood, South Wales, is one of the market leaders in the new build and social housing refurbishment sectors. It has also been a Spectus fabricator since 1999 and has just signed a new three-year supply agreement with the systems house. Rhys Davies of IG Doors said: “We choose our supply partners very carefully – our reputation depends on getting it right. We continue to work with Spectus because the product quality and service is superb and they continue to proactively support our business needs.” As well as praising the quality of the product and service, Rhys also highlights the quality of the technical support the company receives. He said: “For two decades we have worked closely with the Spectus technical team and this proactive support has been invaluable to us.” IG Doors buys the Elite 70 bevelled door outerframe from Spectus. It uses the outerframe with its GRP composite doors, which is a key product line for the company, not least because it was one of the first companies to bring composite doors to the UK market, claims the company. The Government has proposed two options for Part L of the Building Regulations for new dwellings in England. The first option, described as ‘Future Homes Fabric’, would offer a 20% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the current standard for an average home. This would be delivered through introducing very high fabric standards, such as triple glazing, resulting in minimal heat loss from the building envelope. The second option would see a 31% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the current standard. It would take advantage of carbon-saving technology such as photovoltaic panels and low-carbon heating, as well a more modest increase in fabric standards, in comparison to option one.

The meeting was chaired by David Borland, Technical Officer who led the forum covering the following key points: Approved Document L (on energy efficiency) was addressed and to achieve the Government’s Zero Carbon targets for new homes by 2050 the following options were discussed. Option 1 – immediate introduction of triple glazing as compulsory for new build 28 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

Opt 2 – move towards improved U value through improved products by 2025

The Group unanimously preferred Option 2 based on the following grounds. Firstly that Option 1 – compulsory triple glazing with immediate effect would be too difficult to achieve as the industry is not ready (in terms of manufacture, supply and installation) for this significant shift, though long term it should remain a goal. Option 2 – improving a properties U-Value would be the easier and more gradual process which would allow the industry to use improved and upgraded products/components to achieve the Government targets as proposed in the

The general consensus at the meeting was the GGF supported the Government’s agenda, plans and commitment to Zero Carbon by 2050 but will strongly recommend to Government that the Glass and Glazing industry will need at least 5 years to get set up to achieve the 2050 targets. It was unanimously agreed that the industry at present, is not in position to achieve the targets proposed. Sweeter 2020 sees Brisant launching a brand new 20-year guarantee on the Sweet hardware system. They’ve taken the decision to leap from ten years to twenty, following the rigorous testing which they have put the handles and letterplates through over the last year. The choices they made in manufacturing, coating with 6 layers of armour, have paid off. They put a handle in an independent test chamber and it still looked great, even after being hammered with saltwater for over 8,000 hours. That’s an incredible 30x more time than required for the flagship EN 1906:2012 corrosion standard. Sweet is an edgeless, long lasting, pit-free beautiful hardware system for any door. It comprises of two types of handle, including the patented secure and award-winning Lock Lock. They have created a second shape of letter plate, having listened to customers. Room Comfort Has Never Been So Smart At FENSTERBAU 2020, the SIEGENIA GROUP will be using domestic and business area exhibits to show that room comfort has never been so smart. In Hall 4, Stand 215, across approximately 1,000 square meters of stand space, the company will create living spaces that offer added value through intelligent solutions.

34 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

One highlight of the show stand is the launch of senso secure. Smart security is a hot topic within the English market and we are sure we will become one of the market leaders. The new wireless window sensor, senso secure, offers smart security for windows: concealed in the window profile, it provides

reliable information about the opening status of tilt & turn or casement windows. It is even the only solution on the market at the moment to detect when handles are left in the open position, claims the company. The SIEGENIA Comfort app provides information about the open/ closed status of elements, while also enabling the operation and control of SIEGENIA smart wall and window ventilators and of motorised drives for windows and doors. The company states, the senso secure has an integrated vibration sensor which is currently also unique in the industry. If it detects an attempt at manipulation, it responds with a loud warning tone directly at the window and at the same time triggers a deterrent alarm signal via the SIEGENIA Connect Box. Alarm messages can also be sent as a push notification to your smartphone. This ensures the highest level of smart security. The senso secure window sensor is also easy to fit. The simple, wireless installation makes it suitable for new builds and retrofitting as it can be attached to either the existing window profile or during production in just a few simple steps. Lift and slide doors are a growing trend, with more people clamouring for greater views of the outdoors uninterrupted by multiple frames. SIEGENIA continues to innovate in this area, as visitors to Fensterbau will be able to see with the ECO PASS threshold for HS PORTAL: the high-performance threshold for lifting and sliding doors, which combines energy efficiency with comfort, aesthetics and accessibility. The solution is suitable for burglar resistance up to PAS24 and therefore also takes into account the security needs of numerous types of end users. Fabricators are won over by ECO PASS with its time-saving and cost-effective installation and the possibility of a tailor-made com-

HARDWARE / SAFETY & SECURITY plete package via the COMFORT UNIT; a recent introduction to the UK market. This comprises a complete door package containing precut hardware and preassembled sill. All that is required is the fabricator’s profile, so there is no waste material. The ECO PASS is now available for use with eight PVC system houses. SIEGENIA will also be presenting innovations in their KFV door lock range. Practical, safe, convenient: the new AS 3600C automatic multi-point locking system for apartment buildings offers all residents the option of leaving the building at any time – even with the door locked. The AS 3600C provides a remedy for the emergency operation issues that come with locked apartment doors, for instance in the case of a fire: With this technology, the handle is not blocked, so the door can be opened from the inside at any time without a key. Motorised opening is also possible in conjunction with the intercom system. The automatic locking of the door by operating the hooks and deadbolts ensures a clever combination of security and convenience during the closing process. A finger scanner, transponder or keypad can be specified ensuring convenient control via the SIEGENIA Comfort app. From a fabrication point of view, the new solution is appealing thanks to the use of the standard routing dimensions of the AS 3500 and AS 3600. Frequent use of special frame parts is also rendered completely unnecessary. The AS 3600C will be available from the summer. greenteQ Oval Pull

Handles Add A Touch Of Style

Award winning hardware specialist VBH has expanded the greenteQ Coastline range of stainless steel pull handles with the addition of two new Oval profile designs.

Adrian Gale says “Members of our greenteQ development team presented a number of proposed designs to a sample set of fabrication and installation companies last year.

The stylish new Oval products offer an attractive alternative to the standard circular profile pulls that are already very popular on contemporary entrance doors.

“The overwhelming opinion was that, whilst they wanted something different to the traditional tube, they still preferred a pull that had a soft feel and appearance. The new bars certainly fit that bill as the oval tube is very comfortable to hold, and looks very stylish. Initial sales figures are backing that up.”

VBH advise that Oval pulls are manufactured from hard wearing grade 304 austenitic brushed stainless steel and, as with all the products in the Coastline range, benefit from VBH’s 25 Year Coastline guarantee. There are Straight and Offset options. As its name suggests, the Offset version’s bar is mounted on angled legs to offset the pull handle by 72mm from the fixing points. The pulls are available in four lengths and can be fitted on their own or back to back. Fixings are available to suit composite, aluminium, timber, PVCu and glass doors. For more information on greenteQ pull handles or any other product, visit vbhgb.com WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020 35

HARDWARE / SAFETY & SECURITY worked closely with its sister company Lorient, utilising its indicative furnace to test product performance. The furnace allows fire resistance properties of building materials to be tested in accordance with BS 476-22 (method of test for determination of the fire resistance of elements of construction) and EN 1363-1 (fire resistance test standard). Brett Evans, Technical Director for Door Hardware at Yale Door and Window Solutions, comments: “Here at Yale, we have a wide range of products that are designed to assist with fire doorset accreditation. Each product can make a critical difference, as without these seemingly small pieces of hardware, the effectiveness of a fire doorset can be significantly reduced.

Fire Doorset Specification Committed to improving fire safety in residential, commercial and public buildings, Yale Door and Window Solutions has successfully tested a number of its products to meet the FD60 fire door specification. Fire doors are one of the most fundamental elements of a building’s passive fire protection, acting as the first line of defence in a fire. They provide those vital minutes for occupants to evacuate the building safely. The FD60 specification tests doorsets to withstand at least 60 minutes protection against fires. 36 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

Yale’s AutoEngage multi-point door lock, KM TS007 1-star Cylinder, TS008 letterplate and TS007 2-star handle were collectively fitted and tested on a 54mm door with Lorient’s intumescent seal, passing the test requirements of BS 476-22:1987 and exceeding the FD60 time test by an additional 25%. This doorset assembly now allows architects, specifiers and OEMs to be FD60-compliant, helping to defend buildings against the spread of fire. A New Glass Sealing

Process From Endurance Endurance Doors have recently invested in a new glass sealing process to their solid timber core composite doors, which has had a positive effect on helping to eliminate customer concerns over water ingress.

Water ingress in composite doors has hampered the composite door sector in the past and it has been several years since Endurance incorporated a unique Moisture Barrier Systems (MBS) to the bottom of their door slabs. But the recent introduction of a new glass sealing process adds further credence to the claim that Endurance Doors have become the #KingOfComposites. The first stage in the glass seal38 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

ing process involves the bonding of the two inner glazing cassettes and glass unit to the Endurance door slab, using the pre-inserted black double-sided tape. The new additional stage in this important process introduces the wet sealing of the external cassettes, with the application of a silicone bead to the inner and outer channels of the external cassette, before they are both pushed together on the slab, excess then wiped clean prior to being screwed together.

This additional application of silicone has had a positive effect on the number of customer concerns. All of the operational efforts over the last 18 months in terms of adopting a quality

culture and this and other new processes, have seen customer product issues nearly completely eliminated, says the company. Stephen Nadin, Managing Director of Endurance Doors commented: ‘With the recent heavy rainfall during the latter three months of the year, we’ve heard of a number of composite door installations that have been subject to water ingress to the foot of the door slab and also into the glazing cassettes. The results have been graphic and represent the risk of installing composite doors where manufacturers don’t take water ingress seriously.’ www.endurancedoors.co.uk

The company has developed a particularly exceptional relationship with Aberdeen based Bon Accord Glass over recent years, who have recently added three new products to their showroom. Commercial Manager Bryan Kinghorn explained the reason for expanding their Apeer offering: “Quite simply, they are the best doors on the market, and put us in a strong position with customers” he said. “We sell a high number of composite doors and have a great relationship with Mark and Alex at Apeer, so after parting ways with another supplier, decided to allocate the free space to the Lumi sliding patio door.” In addition, Bon Accord also now showcases a new composite door and a Lumi window. “We have watched the trends and noticed that sliding doors are coming back – taking over the demand for PVC bi-folds. Lumi, too, is growing and we think that over time the window products will be equally popular.” www.lumiwindows.com WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020 39

Stand Out Features

From Stellar Stellar from Epwin Window Systems has been capturing headlines since the aluminium window and door system was launched last year. The double G19 award-winning system was designed to push the boundaries of aluminium window and door design and offers numerous industry-firsts that the company says makes it faster to fabricate and simpler to install than rival systems. One of Stellar’s stand out features is the unique patent-pending reverse butt joint which allows products to be fabricated without dummy sashes or reverse adaptors. Gerald Allen, Marketing Manager at Epwin Window Systems explains: “Most aluminium systems use dummy sashes, couplers or reverse adaptors 42 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

to ensure the windows can be internally glazed. This can detract from the overall appearance of the window and uses more resources to achieve. The patent-pending reverse butt joint from Stellar overcomes this problem and ensures the slim lines are preserved and uses less materials. Furthermore, our intelligently-designed internal cleats ensure a clean joint is achieved offering superb aesthetics too.” Stellar was designed by a team of talented industry experts with an impressive track record in the aluminium sector. The brief was to develop an aluminium window and door system that harnessed the developments witnessed in the PVC-U sector and give the retail and light commercial markets ex-

actly what they needed and had been asking for. Years of experience and extensive market research were combined with an open mind and high ideals to deliver the ground-breaking window and door system. Stellar consists of two openout flush casement window options and a flush residential door. The system will soon be joined by a lift and slide patio door and a bi-fold door that offers the lightweight strength of aluminium combined with the option of PVC-U beading that means it sits more comfortably in UK homes. All products come with the option of crimped or mechanically jointed finishes offering strong design flexibility. Gerald concludes: This combination of market-leading factors, together with a wealth of market-first advantages are the reasons Stellar has experienced its first flush of success and is fast becoming the go-to aluminium system.” www.stellaraluminiun.co.uk

At launch, the aluminium systems house has, however, chosen to place significant focus on the Decalu88 Bi-folding Door, as a product which it argues delivers immediate advantages to fabricators – including PVC-U manufacturers who currently buy-in.

Deceuninck is bringing its expertise in systems supply to a new industry audience with the launch of Decalu, its cutting-edge ultra-energy efficient aluminium system. Described as a complete aluminium window and door offer, it’s been designed to combine u-values of as low as 0.68W/m2K, with significantly reduced manufacturing times and increased installation efficiencies. It’s also being underpinned by a commitment to bring new levels of service and flexibility to aluminium systems supply. This includes dual-colour and marine grade as standard – something which Nigel Headford, Deceuninck Aluminium’s Business Development Director, said would deliver significant advantages to fabricators and installers. 44 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

“Decalu is a proven aluminium system, which is already established throughout Europe. It’s designed to be easy to manufacture, easy to install and cost-effective – adding-value and leaving manufacturers room to build in margin”, he said. “We’re also determined to change expectations of service and support in aluminium. This includes offering dual-colour product as standard.” He added that the Decalu systems range had been developed to encompass a complete suite of products. This he said had been designed to minimize stockholding through the use of a single inner frame and mid-section; integrated insulation and pre-inserted, co-extruded gaskets. It encompasses the Decalu88 Bi-folding Door; Decalu163

“You don’t need to hold so much stock while the Decalu88 Bi-fold delivers a series of manufacturing efficiencies, which means you can cut manufacturing time by more than 30% against comparable aluminium systems”, Nigel said. “Another benefit for fabricators and installers is that as well as being available in dual colour as standard, the Decalu88 can also be colour matched to Deceuninck’s PVC-U foil range. The system has also been designed to support PVC-U specialists make the transition to in-house manufacture of aluminium through the use of a PVC-U Eurogroove, which means PVC-U manufactures don’t need to double-up on stockholding of hardware and gearing. “We are committed to changing the way aluminium systems supply works. We are a product – but just as importantly – a service-led business. That’s proven in Deceuninck’s track record in PVC-U supply”, Nigel said. www.deceuninck.co.uk

Spacer Bars, Document L, Energy

Efficiency And Triple Glazing Thermoseal Group, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and supplier of spacer bars for insulated glass (IG) sealed unit production, gives an insight into the spacer bar market and predicted future trends. Spacer bars, used primarily to space the panes of glass in double, triple and even quadruple glazing, have seen significant development and a change in market demand over recent years. There has long-been a widespread decline in the demand for Aluminium spacer bars and an increase in the demand for more energy efficient warm edge spacers which has primarily been brought about by changes in legislation dictating improved energy efficiency in windows. 48 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

Mark Hickox, Thermoseal Group’s Sales Director shares some of the Group’s insight. “Going back ten years, the vast majority of the UK spacer market was for Aluminium spacer. Despite the high level of promotion of warm edge spacers as a market differential, there was only a small market for warm edge spacers until revisions to Document L dictated improved U-values and influenced the introduction of the Window Energy Rating (WER) Scheme. Since then, the strive for ‘A’ rated WERs and now ‘A+’, ‘A++’ and in some cases even ‘A+++’ rated windows has influenced the specification of warm edge spacers and any window components which contribute

towards increased energy efficiency. Mark claims, “In 2008, we started developing two of the most energy efficient spacer bars available on the worldwide market – Thermobar warm edge spacer tube and Thermoflex flexible warm edge solution. Since then, our trend in sales has seen a continual decline in Aluminium and increase in the demand for our market-leading warm edge spacer bars. “There is likely to be further increase in the UK demand for warm edge spacers and other more energy efficient insulated glass (IG) components which could be escalated by revisions to document L – the current consultation document suggests solutions which may require the specification of triple glazing in new properties. Should this go ahead, the requirement for triple glazing will mean a significantly higher volume of spacer bar and fittings within each IG unit and so greater demand from manufacturers of premium high-performance warm edge products

He explained: “We have a close and long standing relationship with Curran and always work hard to understand exactly what they want to get from their machinery investments in terms of performance, efficiency and payback, so that we can make the right recommendation every time. We have access to a vast range of machine options from both Emmegi and our sister company Tekna, so we are always confident that we will have the ideal product available for any requirement.” Curran Aluminium reviewed both laser cutting and water jet cutting alternatives before agreeing that the Tekna 743 was the best solution for its factory. Although this was the first installation of this model of machine in Ireland, Curran was reassured by the fact that a specialist engineer from Tekna in Italy was contracted by Emmegi to work alongside its own Irish engineering team and ensure that the installation went very smoothly.

CMS Delivers Full Glazing Package For New

£78M Forth Valley College Campus CMS Window Systems has played a key role in the creation of Scotland’s newest further education campus with the manufacture and installation of high performance aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling for the new £78m Forth Valley College in Falkirk. The company was tasked by main contractor Balfour Beatty to deliver the complete glazing package in a contract valued at circa £3m, which took 21 months to complete. The new Falkirk campus, designed by Reiach & Hall and Keppie 52 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

The 20,709 sq. m campus, which received funding of £65m from the Scottish Government for its construction, represents one of the largest publicly funded building projects in Scotland. The exten-

CMS, which is one of the UK’s leading building envelope specialists, was ideally placed to deliver the extensive glazing package. More than 5,400 square metres of curtain walling and 1,100 square metres of windows and doors were manufactured for the three blocks –

The architect’s design of the building envelope incorporated a large percentage of vision glazing which was crucial for providing a high-level of natural daylight for the occupants. In addition, the provision of solar control glazing to selected elevations contributed to reducing the solar heat gain. Stephen Anderson, Façade Director at CMS Window Systems, said: “Forth Valley College’s Falkirk campus is an outstanding educational facility and we are delighted to have been appointed to handle the glazing package. Our design, manufacturing and installation capabilities and resources are ideally suited to large scale new build public projects of this kind, and as a long term supply chain partner to many major contractors and local authorities, we are highly experienced in the successful delivery of such schemes.” teaching, sports and workshop – which are predominantly two storey. With the college’s contemporary design featuring large areas of glazing to maximise natural daylighting inside the buildings, it was crucial that CMS worked closely with the architects and engineering consultants Wardell Armstrong to ensure the right result. The new building is designed around a steel frame structure supporting precast flooring with masonry external walls including curtain walling and cladding. Metal Technology aluminium systems were specified for here, including their System 17 capped and silicone pointed curtain walling, System 5-20D doors and System 4-35 windows. The architect specified the use of three surface finishes dependant on the location: RAL 7016 anthracite grey, AA25 silver natural

anodised, and RAL 9002 grey white. Working on a solution developed by CMS, Metal Technology also extruded two new bespoke aluminium profiles for use within the courtyard areas: a “bird mouth” feature external face cap to the curtain walling and a vertical cladding profile to strips of glazing between the windows. The glazing specification was designed to maximise energy efficiency and maintain a stable internal climate and the quality dimension to the college’s design. The ventilation strategy was very important to the client to ensure that ventilation could be easily controlled by the occupants of each area. This was achieved by providing manually-operated opening sashes at low-level and electrically-actuated sashes at high level which

The opening of the new Forth Valley College campus represents an exciting development for the whole Falkirk region. Speaking at its recent launch, Dr Ken Thomson, Forth Valley College principal, said: “Seeing our students walk through the doors of our new Falkirk Campus was an exhilarating and proud experience. It was great to welcome them and I am excited to see everyone settle in to this excellent new learning environment. “We can’t thank architects Reiach & Hall, Keppie and Balfour Beatty enough for designing and constructing our new building and helping us to realise our vision, and I personally would like to thank everyone who has worked on the project for guiding it to completion.” Find out more at www.cmswindows.com WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020 53

The Kawneer systems were installed over eight months by a team of up to 35 from approved specialist sub-contractor FK Group for main contractor GRAHAM and client Glenbrook, the privately-owned property development and investment company, who acquired the site from the Peel Group. The project required 18 panels measuring 19.92m2 to form a gentle hipped roof, sitting aloft an African Sapele hardwood structure. The glass panels were fitted complete with roof lantern on one side; quality manufacture one of the key reasons for TuffX’s involvement. Situated next to a rookery, the brief specified a distinct need for self-cleaning glass; a request catered for through the use of a specialist Ambi product. Woodworking Apprenticeship Sets Joiner On Path To Bright Career

heritage and conversation projects, with college one day a week and is currently working towards his Architectural Joinery Level 2 qualification. Discussing why he entered the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry, he explained, “There’s something special about woodworking and joinery, you get to see a project from start right through to finish. From a plain piece of timber, you create a beautiful moulded shape or finished product that you can be proud of.

Holmesfield-based British Woodworking Federation member, Tom Pearson & Sons, champions National Apprenticeship Week

Nearly two years ago, William Wragg took the plunge and left sixth form to begin an apprenticeship at joinery firm Tom Pearson & Sons. Since then he has developed essential skills and a passion for woodworking that has put him on track for a rewarding and successful career. Nicholas Pearson, William’s employer, champions apprenticeships as the best way of supporting young and talented people entering the industry, while allowing joinery businesses to showcase the diverse career opportunities available. William and Nicholas share the stories behind their passion for the woodworking industry and explain how they believe apprenticeships provide a route into a rewarding and diverse career. A job full of satisfaction

Apprentice William Wragg joined fourth-generation family firm Tom Pearson & Sons in 2018 when he decided that continuing in education at his secondary school sixth form wasn’t the path he wanted to take. William said, “After starting sixth form and studying for A Levels I found that it wasn’t for me and I didn’t enjoy it, so during my first year I decided to look into apprenticeships. “I grew up on a farm where I helped out doing odd jobs where I could, and I found I really enjoyed the bits of woodworking that I got to do. I got in touch with my local joinery firm, Tom Pearson & Sons, to see if they had any apprenticeship spaces coming up, and after a successful trial I was hired.” William combines his practical hands-on apprenticeship at Tom Pearson & Sons, which specialises in bespoke joinery products and

“Other times you’re restoring historic features. I recently worked on the restoration of two big arch stained-glass windows, and it was really rewarding to turn something that had been left to rot into a window that looks new and in a great condition. It’s a really satisfying job.” Nicholas Pearson is the director of the company and part of the business’s founding family. But like William, joining the industry wasn’t always his plan. As he explains: “After working with my father in the workshop when I was younger, I took a different career path to work in sales for the heating industry. I worked in this role for a while but would always drive past a timber door I had made when previously working with my father. I remember thinking ‘wow, I made that’, and after a while realised that woodworking was my passion and that I wanted to work for the family firm. “That’s the fantastic draw of being a woodworker or joiner – you get to see and be proud of what you’ve made and even 20 years later, the wooden door is still there!” WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020 61

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT Discussing William’s progress since joining the company, Nicholas said, “William has fully embraced our ethos to produce high quality bespoke joinery, offering his thoughts on how we can improve and work more efficiently. A real achievement is that, for our door manufacturing, he recently set up an overhead router to allow the multipoint lock and keeps to be fitted flush without needing to manually chop any of the casement or frame. This saved many hours of labour, so helped to improve job efficiency, which is great both for the business and the end customer.

route. Although studying full-time at college can be good for some, learning the practical side of the craft on the job means that you learn a lot more and that you have the skills employers are looking for once you’ve completed your apprenticeship.”

“William has been fantastic, he’s worked on everything we’ve thrown at him – bespoke front door sets, sliding sash windows, traditional casement windows – and turned his hand to everything so far. It was brilliant to see him nominated at the national 2019 BWF Awards for Apprentice of the Year.”

Helen Hewitt, CEO of the British Woodworking Federation said, “Apprenticeships are the stepping-stone into our industry, and are essential for recruiting the next generation of talented individuals to our creative profession.

Apprentices are the future William is the second apprentice that Tom Pearson & Sons has supported, and the company believes the approach is vital for the future of the profession. Nicholas said, “Apprentices are needed by our industry to bring in new talent and to allow them to train in a handson environment. It can be difficult for firms looking for high calibre apprentices, but with the British Woodworking Federation’s positive work in showcasing the industry to students, and apprentices like William who have a real passion for the industry, I look forward to welcoming the next generation of talent to our business and the sector as a whole.” This is a view endorsed by William himself, who added, “I think there are students out there interested in an apprenticeship in woodworking and joinery, but there needs to be more awareness, especially of the hands-on apprenticeship 62 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

Tom Pearson & Sons is just one of many British Woodworking Federation (BWF) members that support the future of the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry by providing apprentices with a positive environment and the right skills and training for them to progress into a successful career.

“We work closely with our members, education partners and other stakeholders to maintain and develop apprenticeship standards to ensure that they remain fit-forpurpose. This approach is vital as innovative new technologies and manufacturing techniques continue to place new demands on skills, training and continuous development in the sector. “The BWF’s work on apprenticeship standards is part of a wider approach to skills and training that we’ll be placing a major focus on in 2020 and beyond, targeting three key areas – talent attraction, apprenticeships and leadership development. Through the upcoming launch of our new education programme, WOW I MADE THAT!, aimed at inspiring students in Years 9-12 to get into woodworking, we continue to champion apprenticeships as the next step on a positive and progressive route to a rewarding and diverse career.” For more information on the rewarding career paths available in the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry visit www.bwf.org.uk

Bumper Year Of Fundraising For

Window Ware Team In 2019

The team at Window Ware, the award-winning hardware distributor once again showcased their community spirit with a fantastic year of fundraising in 2019. Throughout the year, colleagues, customers and suppliers all dug deep to raise vital funds for chosen charity Sue Ryder St. John’s Hospice. With a range of fundraising events, along with collection tins and even a trade counter tuck shop, the Window Ware team raised a tremendous £1,568 for the Bedfordshire hospice. The team’s community spirit was exemplified by Window Ware’s brave credit controller Sharon Fowler. Facing the challenge of undergoing chemotherapy, Sharon took charge of the situation and organised a sponsored head shave. Sharon braved the shave in two stages for maximum fundraising, with the first half shaved in support of the hospice and the second in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Not only did Sharon’s efforts 66 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2020

contribute to Window Ware’s final total but she managed to raise a magnificent £1,370 for Macmillan. If that wasn’t enough, Sharon went on to organise ‘Wear a Wig Day’ to celebrate the completion of her chemotherapy. With full support from colleagues and a wonderful array of colourful wigs, a further £200 was raised for St. John’s Hospice. Along with fundraising for the local hospice, members of the Window Ware team showed their support for Macmillan, raising £324 through an Easter charity raffle and the annual big coffee morning. What’s more, Sarah Binns, Head of Internal Sales and Marketing joined with five friends to take on the South Coast Mighty Hike, a gruelling 26-mile cross-country trek. ‘The Blister Sisters’ battled 50mph winds and hailstones to complete the course in 9 hours and 22 minutes, raising an incredible £2,770 for Macmillan in the process. And finally, Trade Counter Assis-

tant, Andrew Tollett fought in a UWCB charity boxing match to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Despite taking on an undefeated boxer, 20 years his junior, Andrew put in an impressive performance to raise over £2,110 for the charity. Sam Nuckey, Managing Director of Window Ware comments: “As we always say, our greatest strength at Window Ware is our team, not just for their dedication, experience and technical knowledge but for their incredible community spirit. To raise such an amazing amount of money for these worthy causes is a fantastic achievement, and I couldn’t be more proud. “As to be expected from Window Ware, our aim is to go one better in 2020 and surpass our 2019 total. With staff voting to keep Sue Ryder St. John’s Hospice as our chosen charity, we’re looking forward to more fundraising activities and opportunities for staff, customers and suppliers to once again show just how generous they are.” www.windowware.co.uk
