Small Business

Confidence Hits One-Year High As Profits Recover

said: “It’s good to see small business confidence maintaining its steady rise this month. Heathrow expansion, increasing consumer spending power and continuing momentum among exporters are all helping to keep optimism on the up, despite weak domestic growth. “If we don’t see real progress on Brexit talks soon, however, we run the risk of this confidence being lost. The clock is ticking. Negotiators need to get on and secure a deal that works for small firms. “Business owners are resilient. They’re determined to grow despite the barriers they face. “Many women in business still face an uphill struggle, not least when it comes to securing investment. Visibility of role models is one issue, and we’re working hard to address that challenge. On the other hand, thousands of women in business are going from strength to strength. It’s good to see that reflected in today’s report.”

• Quarterly Small Business Index (SBI) continues steady rise to reach highest point since Q2 2017 • Women entrepreneurs now more confident than male counterparts • Welsh small firms are UK’s most bullish, while retailers suffer and GDPR feeds regulatory concerns Confidence among the UK’s small business community has risen in recent months and now stands at a one-year high, according to the latest SBI from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). The UK SBI stands at +12.9 in Q2 2018, up considerably from the +6 seen in Q1 and the highest reading since Q2 2017 (+15). More than a third (35%) of small businesses expect their performance will improve over the coming three months. Less than a quarter (24%) believe

performance will worsen. The proportion of small firms saying that gross profits are steady or increasing (62%) is also at a 12-month high, as is the share of exporters who report that international sales are stable or rising (81%). Growth intentions are at their most promising since Q2 2017, with the vast majority of small firms (88%) planning to remain the same size or expand in the coming 12 months. More than three quarters (79%) report steady or increasing headcounts. In a reversal of a previous trend, female small business owners are now more confident than their male counterparts. The SBI for women and men stands at +16 and +12 respectively in Q2 2018, compared to +10 and +17 respectively at this time last year. National Chairman Mike Cherry

Following the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in May, the proportion of small firms saying that regulation is a primary barrier to growth has surged 10 percentage points to 29% since this time last year. The domestic economy (57%) remains the number one barrier to small business growth, with access to appropriately skilled staff (28%) and labour costs (21%) also frequently flagged. Mike Cherry continued: “It’s vital that the Information Commissioner’s Office takes a proportionate approach to enforcing the GDPR. Small firms don’t have big legal teams and that needs to be recognised. Small businesses definitely shouldn’t be fined for honest mistakes. “A lot of eyes in Westminster are understandably still on Brexit. Continued on page 6 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2018 5

TRADE NEWS Continued from page 5

However, policymakers need to remember that it’s weak domestic growth, late payments and access to the right skills here at home that are front of mind for a lot of small firms.” Welsh small businesses are the UK’s most confident this quarter, reporting an SBI of +44. Elsewhere, the SBI for Scotland (+5) has returned to positive territory for the first time since 2015. The most confident regions in England are the East Midlands (38%) and Yorkshire (34%). The least confident are the South West (-2%) and the North West (2%). Confidence among small retailers remains in negative territory (-2%). Small firms in the manufacturing (27%) and professional, scientific and technical sectors (23%) remain among the most confident. Mike Cherry added: “It’s great to see Scottish small business confidence back in the black after a challenging few years. “England’s north/ south divide is discussed a good deal, we hear less about its east/ west divide. More needs to be done to improve connectivity across the width of the country, as well as the length of it. “Though the Beast from the East has now left us, retailers are still well and truly under the cosh as they try to absorb rising business rates, wages and pension costs. Our high street shops need more support when trying to absorb these expenses. An increase in the Employment Allowance to £4,000 is overdue. “Equally, we need to rebalance the taxation system. As things stand, you have rates going up while corporation tax is coming down. If we want to breathe life back into our high streets, that needs a rethink.” Read the full report here

VBH Reports 97.1% OTIF In May

expecting an installation don’t want to hear about a missing handle. They want what they ordered when it was promised without excuses.

Mark Skudder, VBH Logistics Director & branded van livery

VBH (GB) has achieved an outstanding 97.1% on time, in full (OTIF) delivery to its customers during May. With thousands of product configurations and tens of thousands of components from its own greenteQ and other leading brands, this a significant achievement for VBH and demonstrates its commitment to customer service. With branches in Kent, Swansea and East Kilbride, VBH has a distribution centre in three of the home countries (with Northern Ireland being largely supplied via East Kilbride) ensuring true national coverage. Mark Skudder, VBH Logistics Director comments: “The OTIF figure takes into account sales of our own greenteQ branded products, as well as those from our main partners including Glazpart, Hoppe, Maco, Roto, Securistyle, Siegenia and Yale. “Any delivery delays, of even the smallest item, can have an impact on the timely fabrication or installation of a product. Homeowners

6 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2018

“We’re particularly proud of the 97.1% figure as May was a very busy month with sales over 8% up on the previous year. greenteQ sales increased by more than 35% over the same period. This clearly shows that our strategy of developing greenteQ products such as the Clearspan Bi-fold and Invisifold slide & fold ranges to sit alongside our 3rd party offering is working well.” Stock in each VBH depot is tailored to the requirements of the region, with the popularity of different product lines sometimes varying around the country. VBH’s Q-secure guarantee is available on a large proportion of these products, covering against hardware failure in case of burglaries and break-ins. Another example of VBH’s commitment to customer service, the VBH24 web shop has a newly updated product configurator that makes ordering easy. It shows customers the exact hardware required on complex installations such as tilt and turns, bi-folds or greenteQ Invisifold slide & folds. Alternatively, expert staff are on hand to process orders received over the phone or via email. Mark adds: “We’ve seen a significant increase in the number of customers using our web shop since the updates. Not only do they benefit from the easier navigation and the configurator function, but they also receive free standard delivery on orders over £100.” email sales@vbhgb.com

Colour+ From AluK Promises Easy Ordering And Less Stockholding

Sioned Webb, Marketing Director at AluK, says the move is designed to help fabricators reduce the amount of stock they need to hold and free up their valuable working capital: “We’re now giving our customers a colour offering in aluminium which matches that available from most PVC-U suppliers. These are the colours and profiles which account for the vast majority of sales in the trade and residential market, so we know this will be a huge ‘plus’ for our customers.”

Colour+ from AluK is being described as a game changer in the aluminium sector, because of the way that it allows aluminium fabricators working in the trade and residential market to simplify and speed up their colour offering. The new initiative, which replaces AluK’s Colour Now, means that AluK is now supplying a huge range of its standard window and door profiles in four standard colours and two dual colours on a five day lead time plus next day delivery. To make ordering even easier, the four standard Colour+ colours – Hippca white, Anthracite grey, Deep black and Chocolate brown are all priced the same.

She adds: “What further differentiates the AluK Colour+ offering from other aluminium system suppliers is the fact that so many of our profiles are interchangeable of course – with a single outerframe for both windows and doors. “Fabricators making windows in our highly configurable 58BW system, doors in 58BD, sliding doors in BSC94 and bi-fold doors in BSF70 will see real benefits because these products are so well integrated that it will be possible to standardised orders in Colour+ and utilise the same profiles across several product types.” AluK is proud to be leading the way on colour in the aluminium sector now. As well as delivering the Colour+ option which meets the current demands of the market, it is also poised to launch another new colour range shortly which reflects the upcoming trends in texture and design.

Certass Launches Key Partner Programme Specialist certification body, Certass, has launched its Key Partner Programme, working with system suppliers and fabricators to bring even more support to local installers. The Certass Key Partner Scheme follows a pilot with Eurocell that was launched last year and brought the industry’s only solid conservatory roof certification scheme to installers of the Equinox warm roof system. Jon Vanstone, Chairman at Cer-

tass explains: “Our Key Partner Programme will add even more value to our Certass members. By working together with systems companies and fabricators, we can offer practical support that doesn’t just help installers with compliance, it also gives them access to technical expertise that helps develop their skills and grow their businesses. “Between the industry’s systems companies, component suppliers and fabricators there is an impressive wealth of knowledge and

expertise that is really valuable to installers. Our programme will bring them together, so that installers can take advantage of that knowledge and get real practical support.” The Equinox Roof certification scheme has proven popular with installation companies. ards — and therefore securing the discounted premium offered by insurers — can prove difficult for homeowners, especially those who have moved into an older property and cannot be sure without removing the locks from the doors.

Security Shortfalls Hiking Up Insurance Premiums

For Unwitting Homeowners Homeowners across the UK are paying unnecessarily high insurance premiums by failing to include some basic security measures, evidence suggests. Most insurance companies ask for details about the type of locking systems featured on all external doors of the house before supplying a quote. And some providers offer discounts on home insurance policies for customers who have approved, British Standards-compliant locks installed, while others insist on a five-lever mortice lock on the exit doors in order to qualify for cover.

people lock their doors when they leave the house. However, over a third of burglars successfully gain access through the front door. Failing to ensure your home is secured with locks that meet British Standards — and falsely stating that they do — can invalidate your home insurance policy, meaning your insurer will not pay out in the event of a break-in. Joe Halsall, Digital Marketing Manager at Origin Global, said: “Many people are taking the opportunity to modernise while gaining peace of mind in terms of both valid home insurance and security.

In response, some insurance companies are removing this requirement. A spokesperson for Aviva said: “We’re currently making the process of taking out insurance easier by reducing the amount of questions asked. One of the things we’ve focused on is consumers being asked what locks they have, which we don’t believe is necessary.” However, it isn’t just inadequate locks that leave your home’s security at risk; glass panels on doors are particularly vulnerable, according to the police, and should either be replaced with laminated glass or covered with a film which can be bought in DIY stores that makes it harder to break. Depending on the financial outlay required to replace both the locks and glass panels on a front door, it may be more cost-effective to consider a new door entirely. This would also give homeowners the chance to update the aesthetic of their property, improve its ‘kerb appeal’ and possibly even increase its value. The police’s security advice to homeowners includes: locking your doors and windows every time you leave the house

It has been reported that most insurers offer a discount of up to 5% for having British Standards-compliant locks installed — but typically require them on ‘all exit doors and key-operated locks on all ground floor and accessible windows’ or similar.

“We’ve had a number of customers finding their front door had an outdated locking system that didn’t meet their insurance requirements. The ability to update their door to something more modern, and put off potential intruders in the process often seals the decision.”

Investment In New Machining Centre

To Help Supalite Soar Renowned tile roof manufacturer SupaLite has invested around £400K in a new machining centre at its headquarters in Preston, building on its continued success. SupaLite are the manufacturers behind the revolutionary SupaLite tiled roof system for conservatories and orangeries which is in high demand thanks to its lightweight design, exceptional thermal performance and ease of installation. The new bespoke cutting centre will double SupaLite’s production capacity at their factory to more than 200 roofs per week. It is the next part of the company’s ambitious growth plan, and Dave Watters, Managing Director of SupaLite, said: “This major investment will take SupaLite to the next level in our manufacturing growth plan.

“At SupaLite we are committed to providing not only the highest quality tiled roofs but supplying them in a timely manner, and the new machining centre will help us achieve this. This new level of capacity will allow us to hit our orders and provide what our customers want quicker as demand increases for our roofs.” The centre, which is due to be commissioned in August, means that SupaLite can now offer part fabricated roofs to customers, which is great news for smaller fabricators who struggle with storage. The company are also looking at further investment later this year on ply cutting and insulation cutting which will give SupaLite a state-of-the-art production facility. After the recent appointment of five new staff and the unveiling of a new Roadshow Display Vehicle,

the new machining centre is the latest investment SupaLite have made to keep at the forefront of the industry. Dave added: “In less than a decade, SupaLite has grown into the UK’s leading replacement roof solution, trusted by fabricators and installers and recognised by consumers. To achieve this, we regularly invest in our production capabilities, and this latest investment enables us to further demonstrate our commitment to staying ahead of the competition.” SupaLite tiled roofs have found favour with trade customers and homeowners by providing a lightweight, easy-to-install solution, designed to eliminate the extreme changes in temperature seen within conservatories and orangeries. Fully accredited by JHAI for Building Regulations approval, a SupaLite system offers thermal efficiency, creating a space that’s useable all-year-round. Deceuninck Sales Up 15% Thanks To #Bestinclass Products + Service

Certass Launches Key Partner Programme

Deceuninck’s sales continue to surge and are 15% up yearto-date. May’s sales were the highest ever recorded, 22% up on May 2017. Managing Director Rob McGlennon says the company’s sustained growth is down to Deceuninck’s lead on colour and #BestInClass products, like the award-winning Heritage Flush Sash. Deceuninck has near-perfect delivery scores too, with 99% OTIF (On Time In Full) recorded for both April and May, a remarkable achievement given Deceuninck’s extensive colour from stock range. Rob says: “Sales have skyrocketed in the first six months of 2018 while many in the market have slipped back, and we’re confident we will continue to grow fast. It’s down to giving our customers the products and service to stand out and sell more. Our Heritage Flush Sash is a real star and now accounts for 22% of our total sash sales. Remarkably, these are additional sales for Deceuninck, and it’s a similar story for our customers. “Colour is a profitable and

fast-growing sector, so we offer 26 colourways from stock with matching cills, trims and ancillaries. We also have a further 24 colourways available on short lead times, bringing the total colourways to 50. To help customers capitalise on colour even more we’re planning to supply 30 colourways from stock, and we’re also working on cutting lead times on the remaining colourways. Watch this space! “Product is only half the story – our customers know they can rely on Deceuninck to deliver on time and in full, every time. Our delivery record is 99% OTIF for the second month in a row – even more remarkable given the number of in-stock colours across our full product range, including all cills, trims and ancillaries.” Deceuninck also reports strong growth across its Heritage Collection, which includes Sculptured and Chamfered systems and Slider24+, Deceuninck’s new sliding patio door. Euroglaze Welcomes REHAU’s Recycling Initiative

Euroglaze has become one of the first trade fabricators to start manufacturing windows using REHAU’s new co-extruded Total 70 profiles, which use a virgin skin around a 100% recycled core. The Barnsley based company says that, in the wake of Blue Planet II and the ongoing furore around the use and disposal of single use plastics, it is delighted to be able to promote a positive plastic recycling message out to its customers.

We want everyone who buys our frames to understand that not only are they made from recycled materials, but that the material they are made from can be recycled up to 10 more times as well.” What is particularly reassuring for Euroglaze is REHAU’s guarantee that the quality and performance of the co-extruded Total 70 profiles is entirely comparable with 100% virgin material. Martin added: “The product has all the same performance characteristics as its less environmentally sound predecessor which had just 10% recycled material in it, and it passes through all our machinery in exactly the same way. “We are confident that it will give us and, just as importantly the companies who buy from us, a great opportunity to win new business.” www.euroglaze.co.uk

Sliders UK has reported that sales of the Ultimate Evolution have gone from a standing start to an average of 100 frames per week in less than two-years. Added to its range alongside it’s established ALUK offer at the tail-end of 2016, the Ultimate Evolution aluminium bi-fold is now Sliders UK’s biggest selling aluminium bi-fold. It features a highly innovative fully adjustable jamb option, which fitted to both sides of the door, makes squaring and setting faster – cutting installation time to as little as 45 minutes. Steve Mines, Sales Director, Sliders UK, said: “What you get with the Ultimate Evolution are some very slim sightlines combined with considered and well thought-out hardware, which make it a very strong retail prop-

osition. “The other reason that we have seen the exceptional take-up that we have is the efficiency it delivers in installation with the adjustable jamb option that really sets it apart. This deals with imperfections in brick work, making it much easier to align the door correctly. “We have customers fitting the Ultimate Evolution in as little as 45 minutes. The benefit is twofold: it saves time on site; but in making it easier to get the door square, it runs better, almost eliminating call backs.” The Ultimate Evolution bi-fold, is available in multiple panel configurations including open-in or open-out, with a maximum sash height and width of 3000mm x 1200mm.

“Aluminium is an increasingly important part of our offer”, said Mines. He continued: “We also continue to supply the Duraflex sliding and bi-folding door and Eurocell Aspect, alongside our new composite door offer from Capstone.” The expansion of its offer and the growth seen in sales of the Ultimate Evolution saw Sliders UK post year-on-year growth of 34% in May. “It’s a big achievement that we are where we are in a market which got off to a fairly slow start at the beginning of the year. That’s down to a collective hard work that we have put in to develop our product and service offer and most significantly the continuing support and loyalty of our customers.” www.sliders-uk.com

Garrard Gears Up For Growth With Kenrick Garrard Windows, one of the UK’s largest aluminium trade fabricators has seen sales grow by more than 15% year on year and is gearing up for further growth with the help of its hardware partner Kenrick. Kenrick has been supplying its Nemesis multi-point window locking system for aluminium profiles to Garrard for 18 months, during which time it has increased production each month as demand for aluminium continues to rise. The expansion has also prompted the Aylesbury-based firm to substantially increase its dedicated aluminium production space to 42,000 square feet.

“To achieve our ambitious targets, we needed to work with the right hardware supplier that could provide the quality and value we expect, whilst also being able to keep pace with our growth. We have a very long alliance with Kenrick, as they also supply locking systems to our PVC business, and we knew that they had the capability and capacity to support this growth. Dependable service levels are everything in this industry and having Kenrick on board as a reliable supplier has been essential to help us manufacture efficiently and deliver high quality windows on time.”

Clyde Windows

Becomes Newest Ultrainstaller In Scotland The business impact of becoming an UltraInstaller has been described by Clyde Windows’ Managing Director Dax Duckett as “the best decision we’ve made in ten years”. Just two months into the partnership, Clyde Windows has already recruited two additional fitting teams to manage the demand for both new build and renovation conservatories and extensions. Not entirely attributing their recent business growth to Ultraframe, Dax is keen to explain that the installation efficiencies that come with the Ultraframe roof range have significantly increased their installation capacity, doubling the number of roofs they can install in one week.

traInstaller scheme, Dax comments: “We’ve been fitting Ultraframe roofs for several years but as the market changes, with far greater numbers of renovation enquiries, particularly for a solid roof, we really needed to find a roof solution that enables us to fully exploit this growing opportunity. The answer is Livinroof. It takes half the time to fit a Livinroof as it does a competing roof system so it made absolute business sense to become an UltraInstaller and fully exploit both the roof range and quality leads. As for the switch to Livinroof, it’s tremendous, the fitting teams love the speed and accuracy of the roof and our customers love the way it looks. Everybody is a winner!”

Dax and the team have really grasped the nettle when it comes to the opportunity presented by the renovation market. Equally, they have the drive and passion that we look for in UltraInstallers. They really understand the Ultraframe range and how it can drive up profitable sales. Environment At HQ Outdoor Living specialists the Milwood Group had a record sales month in May thanks to their trade partners. Doubling their sales every year for the last three years, Milwood Group is really starting to have an impact on the outdoor living market, and it’s months like May which are driving the company forward. Managing Director of the Milwood Group, Mark Wood, commented: “It’s been a huge month for Milwood and some of our trade partners are really stepping it up with their conversion. Our top trade partner, who recently invested in a garden centre showpiece, has put in 14 orders this month which is a new record! Thank you to all our trade partners across the country, we appreciate the hard work that you do and hope you are reaping the benefits. Look out for some new products which are coming into the range soon.”

The Milwood Group stock a range of aluminium verandas, canopies, pergolas, carports and glass rooms, and Mark sees the emergence of the outdoor living market as one of the reasons for the record month, as more homeowners embrace outdoor living. Mark added: “There is no doubt that the growth of the outdoor living market off the back of the boom in the bifold door sector is opening up opportunities for installers to win new business. Verandas, canopies and luxury glass rooms offer a big span between posts, which creates a viable outdoor space that’s useable all year-round.” Another reason installers turn to Milwood’s products is due to them being quick and easy to work with. All products have been designed very much with the installer in mind and the parts have been stripped down to make them as simple for the installer as possible. www.milwoodgroup.com

VIEWPOINT “Cities like Manchester and Bristol are good examples of this approach in action. Bristol’s Wapping Wharf is an amazing development that has linked a once underused part of the city with its centre – providing a destination that has shops, restaurants and accommodation. This particular project was inspired by developments in New York and is also interesting because all of the retailers are independents.” Michele goes on to say that such developments give a major boost to not only construction firms but also provide housing and opportunities for retailers. “This development was for independent retailers, but many other mixed-use developments are also providing a space for national retailers. Obviously, it’s up to them to provide a brick to click service that consumers want – but having them in a destination space that combines food, housing and leisure could provide established retailers with a boost.”

Mixed Use Developments

Are The Future Regenerating underused parts of cities and towns by building mixed-use developments could provide a golden bullet to help both the ailing high-street and the construction sector. This is the view of Michele Wietscher, who is Director at Newview Windows and Conservatories – a UK home improvement firm. Her message comes after the latest figures around house-

building and construction show a ‘pick-up’ after the impact of the ‘beast from the east’. The high street has also taken a hit recently with major names tumbling like dominoes. Michele explains: “Mixed-use developments are nothing new, but they are an approach to building and using space that can be used even more across the UK.

28 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2018

Mixed-use developments are notoriously hard to get off the ground though – due to the need for large spaces of available land and multiple parties involved, from housebuilders to retailers. But Michele believes that in a time of tough retail and construction conditions, they are particularly appealing. “It’s also interesting to see how many of these developments regenerate areas in cities and towns that were once considered not as desirable. Some will call it gentrification, but you can’t ignore the supply side benefits such projects bring,” says Michele. For more information visit www.newview-homes.co.uk

Lack Of Guts

Holding Back UK

Innovation Says MD Of Manufacturer times aren’t brave enough to charge a premium – or create a culture of high value – for our products, which in turn then allows companies to achieve the margins required to invest more heavily in innovation. “It’s something we’re trying to change at TWR and over the last few years we’ve invested consistently in machinery, new products and innovation. This year we rolled out the fastest ever lead times, allowing us to offer installers dual-coloured bi-folds doors – in any RAL colour combination – in fifteen working days.” Terry Richardson – TWR Group Managing Director

Following a period of consolidation and unrest in the industry, smaller firms need to show guts and embrace innovation if they are going to survive. This is the view of Terry Richardson, who is founder and Managing Director of the TWR Group. The number of companies trading in the glass and glazing sector is falling but the average number of frames being produced each week is on the rise – as more and more small and medium sized manufacturers and installers are acquired by larger companies. In the current trading conditions, several industry heavyweights are also seeing their profits squeezed. Terry believes that to not just thrive but survive, leaders need to invest more heavily in research and development. He comments: “Compared to many of our European neighbours, we don’t invest as heavily in innovation and research and development in the UK. Part of the reason for this is that we some-

This new initiative went live at the end of February (2018) and the group’s Managing Director Terry Richardson says that they have been inundated with enquiries, with the forward order book showing the business is on course for its busiest ever quarter of trading. What has so appealed to installers is not only the super-fast lead times but the fact that the turnaround not only applies to standard grey, black and white but to any RAL colour and combination. The lead times were made possible thanks to sustained investment in the required machinery, personnel and a new colour plant. The plant is housed at TWR’s most recently acquired 17,000-sq. ft. factory, which is next to its 25,000-sq. ft. headquarters in Peterlee. The company has also achieved year on year growth over the last five years and now operates across three factories and has become one of the biggest employers in the region. Terry concludes: “I believe that there is a lack of guts in the UK amongst many business owners. Not all of course, but whether it’s investing in new initiatives or looking at options like exporting – we need to be braver, to survive not just in our industry but within the UK economy.” WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2018 29

New Business Manager Joins Ultraframe decision making that goes into switching roof suppliers so it’s vital that once that decision is made we make the process as effortless as possible for the installer. “Lucy has worked in the fenestration industry for many years and understands the level of care and attention that is required when a new customer joins. Lucy works closely with all of the relevant business functions such as marketing, finance and sales to ensure that becoming an Ultraframe installer is exactly as we would hope – effortless, fast and ultimately, financially rewarding.”

In response to a significant number of new customers switching to Ultraframe this year, Lucy Russell has been appointed as New Business Manager, a role designed to ensure new customers can quickly and efficiently begin to install Ultraframe roofs. Reporting to Sales Director Colin Noone, Lucy’s appointment reflects the growing number of retail installers taking advantage of Ultraframe’s vast roof and component range. Commenting on Lucy’s appointment, Colin says: “Lucy’s experience is a real reflection of the importance we place on ensuring new customers have a seamless experience as we welcome them in to the Ultraframe network. We don’t take for granted the amount of

Lucy is the first point of contact for most customers installing Ultraframe roofs for the first time and takes ownership of every element of the onboarding process, describing the role, Lucy says: “whether a customer is adding to their existing roof range with one of our solid roofs or lanterns, or they’re switching their entire roof range to us, it’s so important that we give every customer high levels of care and attention. As Colin said, it’s a big decision to change your range, and if we can remove the headache associated with that, then we all benefit. I’ve talked to a lot of new customers already that can see the clear business opportunity of systems like Livinroof and Ultrasky, but have delayed the decision because of the hassle-factor. My role completely eliminates that potential headache and ensures that every single new customer enjoys the same high level of care and attention as our existing customers.”

The Importance Of

Natural Light When designing both residential and commercial buildings, the provision of natural light, both for energy efficiency and wellbeing plays a crucial part in the process. Whilst windows need to remain functional, allowing them to be opened, to safely carry glazed units and ensure thermal efficiency, the profiles need to be a slim as possible to allow as much natural light into the building space as possible. Until recently, the slimmest profiles have only been available in steel, but now, more efficient systems designed in aluminium are available with very slim sight lines. One of the most advanced systems is designed and supplied into the U.K. market by the leading Polish

systems company, Aluprof. The ‘Industrial Window’ was developed in Poland to enable many of their historic buildings to be refurbished with similar slim window profiles. Here in the U.K. the system has been used on both new and refurbishment projects. One of a growing number of developments in the U.K. and Ireland, Valentine Place in London, is a new build development consisting of various apartments and mews style houses located in a built up area within Southwark. The importance of using as much available light as possible, lead the design team to specify the ‘MB-60 Industrial’ system. Not only does the system offer a slim sight line appearance, but

the profiled design of the components give it a truly ‘industrial’ appeal. Aluprof UK’s head office and extensive distribution centre is located in Altrincham, Cheshire. Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK including Passivhaus projects. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained local companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets Aluprof’s exacting standards. Good Looks And Brand Recognition From Swish

When you ask Swish fabricators and installers what they like about the Epwin Window Systems brand, the answers come back loud and clear. The system has a unique smooth appearance that makes it stand out in the market, but it isn’t just the good looks it’s the brand recognition too. Swish is a brand that’s recognised by 7 out of 10 homeowners, which gives installers a head start when selling the

system. Gerald Allen, Marketing Manager at Epwin Window Systems, said: “The combination of the distinctive good looks and the homeowner recognition means Swish has an offering that’s hard to beat which is one of the reasons it has attracted brand loyalty from many Swish fabricators.” Of course, the Swish system delivers more than just good looks

and brand recognition. It has all the credentials that are needed to deliver on expectations. The Swish window system is ideal for casements, Tilt & Turn and French windows. It can be used for internally or externally glazed styles and for almost any size or shape of frame. Swish door profiles are specially designed for the job and have the same sculptured shape as the windows for an immaculate and consistent finish to any installation. There’s a comprehensive suite of ancillaries too, to make it easy to create perfect projects. The Impressions colour range gives homeowners the option of colour. And the security and thermal efficiency of every product is assured, so you know you’ll be fitting peace of mind.

There are features to help installers too. Examples include deep addon legs that give more frame installation tolerance if necessary and strategic local wall thickening that means superior hardware retention and a better screw pull out. www.swishwindows.co.uk

We are delighted that the Ultimate Rose window has passed the PAS24 test at this size and look forward to the upcoming projects of this nature.” The Ultimate Rose window is a unique offer to the windows market made with profile from REHAU’s Heritage systems and other bespoke material. It is fully mechanically jointed (so no tell-tale signs that the window is uPVC), and it boasts the slimmest mid-rail on the market. It is so authentic in design that it is a great alternative window for installations where customers want the benefits of modern uPVC but need to comply with conservation rules.

State Of The Art Security Pass For Largest Heritage-Style Window Roseview Windows, has achieved PAS 24 accreditation for its largest Ultimate Rose sash window yet, demonstrating that customers can have large span, traditional style windows without compromising on safety and security. Based in Buckinghamshire, Roseview Windows was established in 1977 and has been specialising in the design and fabrication of the UK’s most authentically styled sash windows since 1985. All of Roseview’s window designs are made from uPVC, to offer customers all the benefits of modern manu-

facturing techniques, energy efficiency, sound insulation and low maintenance but all within a sash window profile. Based on REHAU’s Heritage range, Roseview’s Ultimate Rose window comes in a range of sizes, but after several enquiries from Victorian schools and hospitals about larger sash windows, the company designed a 3000mm (H) by 1500mm (W) size frame. Universal Demand With the growing trend for feature-rich products now becoming a must-have product group for most installers, it makes good sense to partner with a fabricator who has the quality credentials and expertise to manufacture these products. This is the view of Brian Kruger, Managing Director of trade fabricator Universal Trade Frames.

Universal Trade Frames offers their customers a range of highend, feature-rich products which includes both the Spectus Vertical Slider and Flush Casement windows. Brian comments: “For some time we have seen an increase for authentic window products as their high-end aesthetics have taken hold of the market. What was once considered a niche product has very much become part of the mainstream and have subsequently gained acceptance across heritage, retail and new build markets. For installers, these products present an opportunity to upsell and offer a real alternative to a standard PVC-U casement windows.” Both Universal’s Flush Casement and Vertical Sliding windows mimic the appearance of

traditional nineteenth century windows and make them the perfect high-end choice for all market sectors. With the Flush Casement window its authentic appearance is achieved with a bevelled exterior and with a bevelled or sculptured option for the interior. The sashes and deep bottom rail are mechanically jointed and authentic hardware completes the authentic look. The Spectus Vertical Slider is a design classic and combines all the benefits of high performing material and functionally with period character and design. Both windows are available in all 28 Spectrum colours for additional personalisation. Brian concludes: “Like all Spectus products, both the Vertical Slider and Flush Casement windows are best-in-class products that deliver excellence at every level. As a business, we provide ourselves on delivering products that our customers need. In both the Flush Casement and Vertical Sliding windows we have the high-end products that offers a wealth of opportunities for our customers and helps deliver higher order value products to upsell to the consumer.” www.utfl.co.uk

Dekko Window Systems has extended the premium credentials of its seamless uPVC system with the addition of a new grey substrate. The new substrate, finished in an Anthracite Smooth Matt foil, gives Infinity a matching high-end finish on the inside of the frame – replacing the standard white or dark brown finish that’s found when you open other window systems. The combination of the grey on grey appearance, alongside both Graf welded frames and now cills, means Infinity is expertly placed to help Dekko customers target the premium end of the home improvement market. “Infinity has long been the luxury alternative to standard white uPVC windows and we’re delighted to extend that with the brand-new substrate,” comments Kurt Greatrex, Sales Director at Dekko Window Systems. “With its Smooth Matt finish, the new substrate adds the final touch to what is already a highly-desirable and high-margin window system, which meets the premium demands of today’s consumer.” dekkowindows.com

Alex Hunt, Managing Director of Nova Trade Frames said: “In the past we had bought in the Run Through Sash Horns from a competitor as a specialist item for customers requesting it, but with the numbers we were doing on the Heritage windows side of our business, it just made more sense to invest in the equipment to create the Run Through Sash Horns ourselves. “It was a big outlay in terms of commissioning the equipment and training for our production staff, but it’s proving to be such a popular option for our customers that we will see a return on that investment very quickly.”

Nottinghamshire’s Nova Trade Frames says it is now offering its trade customers the most authentic heritage-style PVC-U windows on the market, with the introduction of Run Through Sash Horns for its Heritage and TOTAL70 profiles. Nova Trade Frames is an Authorised REHAU partner and fabricator of high quality windows, doors and conservatories. The family business supplies trade and retail customers nationwide and recently invested £10,000 in a new end miller machine to create the run through horns for its bestselling

Thanks to the modern engineering of PVC-U windows, the horns aren’t required from a functional point of view anymore, but for a truly authentic finish on a vertical slider, they are a must. P C Henderson Release New Twinbolt Locking System

A range of accessories are available to add to the refinement of the product including a stylish Malta Handle Kit and routing rubber cover strips available in a variety of colours. Finer details such as the inclusion of a factory set handle height (1050mm) and easy adjustment of the top lock rod – to suit standard and non-standard doors heights – demonstrates the high standard of design and manufacturing from P C Henderson. Andrew Royle, Sales and Marketing Director at P C Henderson, commented, “Although the previous version of Twinbolt worked extremely well, customer feedback told us that it required increased flexibility. The new system will accept any euro cylinder lock which makes the system a lot more future proof for any future lock or handle changes. The system as a whole is the perfect add on for our Securefold system, it’s discreet, stylish, convenient, requires effortless operation and we’re confident it will be received well by the market”.

Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer – P C Henderson – has launched its new Twinbolt locking system for use with its exterior door hardware system, Securefold. Twinbolt is a sophisticated locking system for exterior folding doors whereby one simple turn of a handle engages a 22mm throw to securely lock the doors at the top and bottom of the system. Designed as a stylish and more concealed alternative to flush bolts, which require manual locking in two separate areas, the product is

set to be a popular addition to the range. New features include the system being able to work with any euro cylinder lock meaning installers have the freedom and flexibility to use their preferred choice of lock – as well as an increased throw of 22mm, providing added security. This feature also provides installers with greater flexibility in regards to the gap between the door and the frame, an important factor due to timber doors often expanding and contracting after installation.

The First Sweet

As the first orders of Sweet, the revolutionary door furniture range start to come in from the initial wave of customers, the very first door has now been installed with this registered curved design in hardware to spectacular effect.

With stocks arriving at the end of July, this was a photographic opportunity too Sweet to miss with the first batch of product samples, which have also gone through a successful and comprehensive testing programme for weather resistance and operating cycles. Over the coming weeks and months some highly trusted and respected brands will in turn announce their Sweet adoption. The installation itself featured handle, letterplate, knocker and numeral from the Sweet range, along

with a 3 Star Ultion cylinder, all from Brisant Secure. In this interesting case study, the door itself was a bespoke arched PVCu frame with carefully manufactured door slab in a rich blue and installed on a 1950’s suburban home.

Nick Dutton CEO of Brisant Secure commented: ‘We’ve brought in some early samples for testing, sales presentations and also to get onto the first door. I was there with the photographer eager to see Sweet gracing our first composite door and it looked nothing short of sensational, providing real designer appeal, suited co-ordination and the benefit of material specification that’s achieved over 8,000 hours in the salt spray chamber. He continued: ‘The first wave of customers have already committed to Sweet in a big way and we have a queue of others eager to join them. After all the product is revolutionary in terms of being truly suited, as is the way we’re addressing the large pitting issues in the industry through better materials and the management of warranties direct with the homeowner. It’s ultimately a true game changer for the entrance door sector.’ www.sweet-doors.co.uk

New British Standard Guides Bring Door Hardware Professionals Up-To-Date A raft of revised British Standards has prompted the publication of three new technical guides from the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI) for door and window hardware specialists. BS 3621: 2017 specifies the performance requirements and test methods for a thief-resistant mechanically operated single-point lock assembly. It gives ironmongers clarification on how to conform to BS 3621 and the classification for locks in respect of other British and European standards. BS 8613: 2017 covers Finger Protection Devices for Pedestrian Doors. It will help specifiers, architects, facilities managers, health and safety and risk assessment professionals to select the appropriate finger protection products to prevent entrapment at the hanging

stile of doors. In January 2018 BS 8300 was revised and the 2009 version was withdrawn. The 2018 version was split in to two standards, one covering the design of an accessible and inclusive built external environment and the other on the design of an accessible and inclusive built internal environment.

The Guild’s new technical guide on this particular standard focuses on the second topic as it is the most relevant to the architectural ironmongery industry. It gives an overview of the history of accessibility legislation and goes on to give further detail about specific ironmongery products to which this that this standard applies. Douglas Masterson, GAI technical manager, says: “Architectural ironmongery companies play a crucial role, working with architects, contractors and others to schedule and specify the hardware for every door and window in a building and to produce a full fixing schedule of hardware items. So it is important that our members are up-to-date with the latest standards.” To access the latest technical briefings, go to the membership area of the GAI website: www.gai.org.uk

Window Ware Boosts Its Bi-Fold Hardware Offering With

New Yale Lockmaster 28Mm

Sales Up 30% For greenteQ Coastline Suite

Fabricators, installers, specifiers and homeowners can all benefit from peace of mind in high-corrosion coastal areas with the industry leading 25-year guarantee for the Coastline suite. Part of the greenteQ range, the popular Coastline suite is produced from Grade 304 stainless-steel, so it’s exceptionally resistant to corrosion from aggressive coastal weather. Sales have increased by 30% over the last 12 months, with the Coastline letterboxes in particular doubling in sales. The suite includes a long backplate lever/lever door handle, a letterbox and Victorian urn door knockers (with or without viewing hole). Finishes include PVD gold, chrome and brushed and polished stainless-steel. Adrian Gale, VBH Product Manager for timber and composite doors explains how Coastline came about: “VBH customers asked for stainless-steel versions of our standard furniture that were designed for aggressive coastal environments. We listened and came up with a proper solution – a suite of fittings which withstand the harshest conditions. Coastline has been subjected to more than 1,000 hours salt spray testing to BS EN ISO 9227, and suits all styles and materials of door, in-

cluding composite, PVC-U, timber and aluminium.

“From a sales point of view, the most valuable part is the 25-year Coastline guarantee – it sets us miles apart from our nearest competitors and is a measure of our confidence in the suite. All of the Coastline suite is interchangeable with our standard Alpha, Omega and Kappa products so it’s easy to upgrade existing hardware or fabricate two lines at the same time and benefit from the higher profit margins associated with supplying a premium product!” The entire Coastline suite is also covered by the comprehensive Q-secure guarantee, the multi-brand security performance guarantee from VBH. It covers all the hardware on windows, residential doors and folding patio doors, giving homeowners complete peace of mind for security. It’s a great selling tool for installers – homeowners will love the peace of mind it brings and it offers simplicity, with one guarantee for the full range of suited products they sell instead of individual manufacturer guarantees. In the event of a break in due to hardware failure, VBH will pay up to £3,250 to the homeowner for associated costs and insurance claims. Visit www.qsecure. co.uk for more information.

Hardware distributor Window Ware has enhanced its bi-fold hardware offering with the latest edition to its Lockmaster range – Yale’s new Lockmaster slim 28mm backset multi-point lock. As with all Yale products, they have undergone rigorous quality and security checks to give fabricators and homeowners every assurance. SGM Windows has recently added both Distinction Doors’ 70mm and nxt-gen composite door ranges to its product portfolio. Stuart Bull, Director of Essex-based SGM Windows said: “As a business we pride ourselves on offering a full portfolio of products to make life easy for our installing customers. The recent boom in composite doors makes them the number one entrance door of choice with consumers and we wanted to make sure our portfolio offered the latest in composite door design to take advantage of this growth. In both Distinction’s 70mm double rebated composite door and their nxt-gen door ranges we have the

latest cutting-edge composite door products to add real value to our portfolio.” Distinction’s 70mm composite door is a double rebated, high performance, energy efficient composite door. Stuart says: “The 70mm door is over 50% thicker which makes it a much easier sell into the consumer who can visibly see the difference and therefore understands the energy efficient benefits of the door straightaway.” Similarly, the standout aesthetics of Distinction’s nxt-gen composite door range equally makes for straightforward sell to the con-

sumer. Stuart commented: “With the nxt-gen composite door it’s all about the enhanced aesthetics which are clearly evident. nxt-gen doors have a sleek and elegant finish that’s unique to the market giving installers something different to sell. The glazing system sits flush within the frame which delivers the sophisticated aesthetics of a traditional timber door. What is impressive is, unlike other composite doors, the woodgrain detail on the cassette and door match perfectly as they are manufactured on the same material. In both Distinction’s nxt-gen door and the 70mm door range we have products that allow us to take our composite door offer to the next level.” Both composite door ranges are manufactured in SGM’s 25,000 sq ft fabrication plant based in Basildon, Essex. Established in 2004, the independently owned company offers a comprehensive range of window and door product to installers and building companies throughout the South East. Window Warehouse Rates LEKA Roofs South Coast trade fabricator Window Warehouse added the LEKA Warm Roof and LEKA Orangery Roof to its portfolio in January 2017. Eighteen months on, the relationship has gone from strength to strength. Malcom Cake, Managing Director of Window Warehouse, said: “We chose LEKA Systems because the products offered something different. They have a lower U value so outperform other roofing options. There was a unique selling point because there was no use of timber or aluminium unlike other systems. They’ve more than lived

Feedback has been very positive: installers rate the ease of installation and the quality of the initial training session. They also appreciate the lightweight system because it’s great for retro-fit projects while the tile finish options mean it can match in with many different property styles. Malcolm highlights the feedback from one installer, Robin Penna, Managing Director at

Bucklers Glass, who commented: “I have been extremely impressed with the LEKA roof, which is becoming increasingly popular with my customers, and I am proud to be a LEKA-certified installer.” Malcolm has been so impressed with the LEKA portfolio and its opportunities for sales that Window Warehouse has developed a retail-focused website devoted to the products. Low-Pitch High Profit With Livinroof

Over a third of replacement roof opportunities in the market today are low pitch lean-tos according to data revealed recently by Ultraframe. With over 30 years’ experience in the conservatory roof market and with several million installations completed by Ultraframe installers, this unique industry insight comes at a time when the replacement market continues to see significant growth. Alex Hewitt, Ultraframe Marketing Director comments: “The low pitch and ultra low pitch lean-to type conservatories that were incredibly popular back in the 80s and 90s are now, as we predicted, ready for refurbishment, accounting for at least a third of the replacement market opportunity.”

Ultraframe’s Livinroof claims to be the only solid roof system in the market that can achieve a pitch between 5 and 10 degrees and with

low ceiling heights often associated with lean-tos, the flexible glazing of Livinroof, enables the retailer to place the glazing to maximise the light and feeling of space in the right places. Alex continues: “What we’re seeing in all parts of the market, the lean-to being no exception, is a strong tendency for home owners to switch to a solid roof product. For Ultraframe retailers this is where Livinroof comes into its own as the only replacement solid roof system that can achieve the ultra low pitches required in the lean-to market. While other roof systems can achieve gradients of 12 degrees, the vast majority of lean-to extensions require a pitch of less than 10 degrees. To put some figures around this, of our total lean-to Livinroof installations this year, half have required a pitch less than 12 degrees.”

Livinroof was launched in 2014 and became the fastest growing roof Ultraframe had launched in a decade. Four years on, it’s popularity amongst Ultraframe retailers shows no signs of wavering. Chosen for its design flexibility, ease and speed of installation and its contemporary styling, Livinroof has become the go-to replacement roof for hundreds of retailers across new build and replacement. Dax Duckett, Managing Director at Clyde Windows, Ultraframe’s newest UltraInstaller is keen to advocate Livinroof as a superb solution for the lean-to replacement market. Dax comments: “the lean-to is an incredibly broad spectrum of extension type so the flexibility of Livinroof is perfect. We’re replacing about ten lean-tos a month and typically the home owner wants a solid roof solution. Unlike a typical conservatory, lean-tos often come with some unique design challenges – low ceiling heights, low pitches. Livinroof enables you to very easily deliver a solution that meets the home owner’s need for a solid solution while still maximising natural daylight to keep it feeling light and bright.” ultraframe-conservatories.co.uk

New Leka Orangery System Available

Now From Window Warehouse

Leka’s lightweight orangery roof system is available now from top South coast window and door fabricator, Window Warehouse. The new system, launched at FIT Show 2017, gives installers an opportunity to offer customers a light-weight flat roof system, to create stunning new orangeries or refurbish old inefficient conservatories. Malcolm Cake, Managing Director at Window Warehouse said: “Window Warehouse is the Certified Leka Fabricator for the South. We were an early adopter of the Leka lightweight tiled conservatory roof system and it has proven very popular with our trade customers. “Most of them report that

homeowners are on the lookout for something a bit more special than your standard glass conservatory, so the Leka orangery roof system is a great addition to the range.” The orangery system uses a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) structural ring beam, ridge and rafters, for an orangery roof that weighs up to 40 percent less than industry equivalents. This means it is light enough to be installed on old conservatory frames for refurbishment projects. The Leka flat roof system has a U-Value of just 0.15 and uses a combination of insulated Celotex sheets, a breathable waterproof membrane, a glass roof lantern and innovative Leka outer boards to create a high-

ly-insulated orangery that can be used all year round. Malcolm adds: “Buying Leka roof systems from Window Warehouse gives customers access to a whole host of sales, marketing and installation support, to help installers grow their sales. Our next training session in the summer, will give customers all the skills and information they need to get going with the orangery roof system.” The next training day will be Window Warehouse’s fourth session run exclusively for customers who want to win more conservatory build and refurbishment projects. www.window-warehouse.co.uk

tions of up to 19 metres already completed. Customisable options mean the doors can be overlapped in a variety of different configurations.

Described as an architect’s dream design flourish, Balconette have re-engineered sliding curved glass from the ground up. The newly-launched Curvaglide® system is bespoke built for the curved facades that are becoming ever more popular in the luxury housing market. The range also benefits from Balconette’s new in-house development of Soft Low-E coating application, which brings energy efficiency levels for curved glass up to leading levels for flat glass for the first time.

“Curved patio doors are a highend, exclusive product” says Balconette CEO Effi Wolff. “Bi-fold patio doors have become commonplace, but curved building facades are rare, and demand something special. The system is aimed at architects designing high-end new builds and luxury extensions.

The newly-launched Curvaglide® system is bespoke built to fit curved facades. Enhanced tracks and rolling mechanisms mean previous width limits have been greatly expanded, with installa-

“We engineered a new support structure and rolling mechanisms to handle these extreme widths. For properties lucky enough to feature curving walls, the new Curvaglide® doors are the perfect complement. Owners get to feel as if they are in the landscape, not just looking at it.” Both the curved glass and

matched frames are made to measure in-house by Balconette, who have UK headquarters 40 minutes outside London. The sliding mechanism uses 2 or 3 tracks, allowing customised configurations of fixed and sliding doors. The smallest configuration uses just 2 panes, both sliding to reveal a 50% opening. For larger installations, up to 4 doors can be slideable. “All our curved glass doors come with 28mm double-glazing with low E glass and toughened safety glass on both sides”, continues Wolff. “Comparing this with a standard pane of glass, our double-glazing units stop at least half the heat transferring through the glass itself. The curvature also provides a lower heat transference.” The ‘Low-E’ glass used in the Curvaglide® system is another unique feature developed by Balconette, providing greater comfort and much better energy efficiency. Curved glass is usually provided with a ‘hard’ Low-E coating to cut down heat transference. The soft Low-E coatings used by Balconette are far more advanced and reduce heat transference by an extra 30%.

PRODUCT NEWS The Curvaglide® system uses Guardian SN51/28 glass, with a centre pane U value of 1.0 W/mK – significantly better than the best hard coat Low-E U-value of 1.5 W/ mK. Wolff explains: “Manufacture of curved glass is significantly more challenging than flat glass, particularly in the application of Low-E coatings. We don’t know of anyone else in the UK who is able to offer curved glass with the extra efficiency of a Low-E Soft coating.” The system has already been used in the refurbishment of Tate St. Ives, where the curved glass façade now overlooks the beach. Wolff continues:“ Architects as far away as California have asked us for these doors. They simply have not been available. Besides the coating improvement, we had to design and engineer a structural system that could support the physical stresses and remain smooth, quiet and strong. Because we manufacture both the curved glass and frames in house we can be sure of smooth movement of the doors and a “hand in glove fit. “Curved facades are rare but they have long been popular with architects. Charles Deaton, famous for the curved house featured in the Woody Allen film “Sleeper”, famously said: ‘If people do not have angles then we should not live in boxes’.” “The Curvaglide®range is undoubtedly a luxury item, but it opens up completely new possibilities for architects. If you have a wonderful view and want to really make the most of it, nothing else comes close”. “Our doors can be curved to complement, highlight or harmonise with the lines or features of the building design. We have long experience working with architects and builders and give thorough technical support and advice from conception to installation”. www.curvaglide.balconette.co.uk

Patiomaster’s New Triple-Track Opens Up New Patio Door Opportunities Patio door manufacturer PatioMaster has launched their new Triple-track track door system. The Triple-track door system offers a wider clear opening than a conventional patio door with up to 25% more open space compared to conventional sliding doors. It gives the option of having two or four sliding sashes that stack neatly behind each other when opened, even on smaller frame sizes. The system offers exceptional aesthetics: the ride over design enhances the overall appearance as well as reduces the plaster cutback needed during installation Carmen Velilla, PatioMaster’s Brand Manager, commented: “The Triple-track system opens up new opportunities for our customers. It can accommodate a maximum aperture width of six metres and a mechanically jointed version is available too. The system is simple to install and features such as edge-located rollers mean easy adjustment. The system works perfectly with standard cills and frame packers, so there’s no need to worry about specific ancillaries. Plus, there’s a bigger glass to frame ratio with the Triple-track system, so the effect of a glass wall when the doors are closed is enhanced too.” The system is available in chamfered and ovolo variations, so it matches existing doors and windows and creates a simple, coherent look

across a building. The trend for colour is also covered. There is a choice of 28 colours and finishes, including grained and flat textures plus dual colour options. There’s a choice of white, gold, brass, chrome, black and silver handle colours. Available in 24 and 28mm glazing options, triple track door configurations exceed all current thermal efficiency requirements. Every PatioMaster door is precision made to order in one of PatioMaster’s regional manufacturing centres. The company says that by working with PatioMaster, your customers get the best of both worlds: the reassurance of a well-respected national brand with the quality and reliability of your local business. www.patiomaster.co.uk

Technical Challenges Of Glass For Megatall Buildings

Burj Khalifa in Dubai – Technical Challenges of Glass for Megatall Buildings. (Photo © Maria Kraynova, Dreamstime.com, GRDPR157)nd Adrian Gale (right)

The surroundings of a building – and, in the case of the Burj Khalifa and the Jeddah Tower, the local desert climate – are important factors to consider. The surrounding areas of megatall buildings such as the hills and other buildings, actually absorb much of the intense heat during the day but continue to radiate or emit this heat to their surroundings through the night. Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass helps to reflect this long wave radiation and minimise its transmission. This is why the use of Low-E glass (such as Guardian SunGuard® Neutral 60) is one of the best choices. The local climate in these hot, humid, desert regions – with daytime temperatures reaching as high as 50°C – pose real challenges for the glass in terms of both stress and deflection, but also potential condensation issues.

Most people don’t realise how popular Low-E glass is in the Middle East and why it should be used. Generally, people think Low-E glass is only used in cold weather climates. However, the concept of blocking and reflecting indirect heat at night and during the daytime is something most people wouldn’t consider. With megatall buildings, there is always a risk that condensation may appear on the external glass pane (outside). This is due to the temperature difference between the outside of the building (which is very hot and humid during the summer) and the inside temperature (air conditioning). Using a low-emissivity glass as the internal pane may help to prevent the cold transferring from the inside of the building to the outside glass pane, while heat treatment (fully tempering

54 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2018

or heat strengthening) will make the glass up to 5 times stronger to resist extreme wind loads and temperature differences. The altitude difference between the top and the bottom of a megatall building – and the temperature difference linked to this – can cause glass deflection issues on the insulating glass unit due to the pressure difference. On the Burj Khalifa project, there was even the challenge of the temperature difference between the production and installation temperatures of the IGUs, which were manufactured in January with a temperature of 26°C, and then installed on site in Dubai in August when the temperature was 48°C. The calculations of stress and deflection of the IGUs enabled our technical experts at Guardian Glass to help define the right glass thicknesses to suit different glass installation heights up and down the building. Due to the height of megatall buildings, wind forces can be extremely high. Even though the dynamic shape of the building is designed to reduce structural loading due to wind vortex shedding, the glass thickness is very important too. For the Burj Khalifa, the glass façade was designed to withstand wind loads of up to 250 km/hour. As I mentioned earlier, the glass system for the Jeddah Tower is designed to withstand a 2.5 metre radius sway without breakage or leakage. The thickness of the glass used depends on the height of the building where it is installed. The heat treatment is also crucial (fully tempering or heat strengthening) as it will make the glass up to 5 times stronger to resist extreme wind loads and temperature differences. Building Glass Launches Lacquered

Glass Collection

122 Waterloo Street, Glasgow, was recently completed with Pilkington Suncool™ glazing

Made In Britain: Two More Pilkington Products Manufactured At St Helens Base Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, part of the NSG Group, is manufacturing two more of its solar control products in the UK to shorten lead times for customers, as demand for specialist glazing grows.

Production of both products in the UK comes after a sustained period of growth for solar control products. Pilkington UK has seen sales of its Pilkington Suncool™ range increase by 47 per cent since 2016.

The company has started producing Pilkington Suncool™ 60/31 from its St Helens manufacturing base to serve UK demand for solar control glazing. The product allows 60 per cent light transmittance but only 31 per cent of the sun’s energy in, so windows deliver a bright clear view but reduce excessive heat build-up.

Leo Pyrah, product manager for solar control products at Pilkington UK, said: “Manufacturing these products in St Helens reaffirms our commitment to supporting our customers, and is a result of significant investment in our stateof-the-art off-line coater over the last few years.

Pilkington Suncool™ Silver 50/30 is also set to be manufactured in the UK from September, predominantly for export. The high external reflection gives the product a distinctive silver appearance, which is increasingly popular with US architects. The move aims to satisfy this increased demand with few alternatives currently available on the market.

“Architects and specifiers are increasingly looking for products that combine functionality with aesthetics. We want to provide building design professionals with a wide choice of solar control solutions, particularly while this type of glazing becomes better understood in the industry and more commonplace in the built environment.” pilkington.com/en-GB/uk

Designed by Hypostyle Architects to combine historical character with contemporary architecture, the new distillery is located within a converted pump house and clock tower, which have been sympathetically refurbished to create a visitor centre and café.

As an impressive focal point, the distillery’s two tonne twin copper stills have been showcased within an extensively glazed modern extension that has been created through the use of Senior’s slim profile structurally glazed SF52 aluminium curtain wall system. Senior’s thermally broken SPW 501 aluminium commercial doors, which are ideally suited to high traffic areas, were also specified and installed by GG Glass & Glazing Glasgow for main contractor McLaughlin & Harvey. CDW Systems Helps Double Glazing And

Design Specialist With Shopfront Project When double glazing and design experts Thames Valley Windows needed to transform an existing shopfront, they turned to top aluminium specialist CDW Systems for help. CDW is one of the UK’s longest running aluminium specialists so they were the perfect manufacturer for the Bracknell based firm to call on when they were tasked with updating the Creative Designs Kitchens & Bathrooms shopfront in Fleet, Hampshire. Paul Schofield, Design Director at Thames Valley Windows, explained: “The team at Creative Designs Kitchens & Bathrooms wanted to remodel the existing shop front to make better use of the space. We wanted to give it a modern look in keeping with Creative Designs and CDW System’s contemporary aluminium windows and commercial door system was perfect to create the desired look.

“Our designer brought the front of the shop forward, in line with the neighbouring shop, which allowed us to incorporate the two existing support posts into the design. We clad the support posts and the shop front in aluminium in RAL 7016 (Anthracite Grey) for a smart, clean, uniform look, inside and out. The aluminium windows are double glazed, and the aluminium door features a full height bar handle. “Many of the other shop owners and customers have commented that Creative Designs Kitchens & Bathrooms has the best-looking shopfront on Fleet Road. The standard of service we received from CDW Systems was excellent, and the quality of their products are second to none – we were absolutely delighted with the results.” CDW System’s commercial aluminium doors have slim, aesthetically pleasing profiles, are low maintenance and easy to install. They are also specifically designed for

heavy usage, suitable for automatic swing or sliding operation, and supplied fully fabricated and assembled with all hardware fitted. The link-up with Thames Valley Windows provided CDW Systems with a chance to go back to their roots, as Jerry Webb, Chairman of CDW Systems, explained: “The commercial door system that was used is a core product that CDW Systems as a company was built on and it is still available as part of our range today. “We are delighted to hear that Thames Valley Windows have benefitted from our range of high performance, quality aluminium products. The shopfront looks very impressive and Thames Valley Windows have done a wonderful job.” CDW has a suite of aluminium products including the Reynaers aluminium sliding folding doors and lift and slide patio doors, which are proving particularly popular. CDW Systems has recently added the innovative Smart VS 600 vertical sliding window to its product range to provide customers with even more choice. www.cdwsystems.co.uk

Sevendials

Stuns In The Cheshire Countryside

Situated in the rural countryside village of Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire, Sevendials is a private contemporary residence project. It utilises an array of innovative products from leading aluminium suppliers Reynaers and Cheshire-based Altitude Aluminium, which installed the stunning aluminium windows and doors on this beautiful build. The contemporary living space is set across more than 600m2 including a full leisure suite with guest accommodation. Situated at the head of a gently sloping valley and immersed in mature greenery including Oak and Birch trees, the modern house boasts views across Cheshire towards Snowdonia and North Wales. TheCAVE architecture + design studio was selected to design the project due to its vast luxury private residual property portfolio. TheCAVE was invited to stay in the bungalow that was previously on the site for three months before the project commenced to gain a profound knowledge of the path of sunlight, views and landscape

ON SITE before plans were finalised. The Sevendials dwelling beautifully projects the impact of Reynaers’ Hi-Finity sliding door system. Each panel of glazing spans the full height of the building across two floors, creating an impactful facade. Despite their minimal visual sightlines, the Hi-Finity sliding doors durability and strength allows for up to 750kg of weight per sliding door leaf. Fixed panes can weigh up to 1200kg. To further advance the functionality of the property, Reynaers’ CS 77 Tilt and Turn systems were installed alongside the Hi-Finity range. Depending on the position of the handle, the CS 77 Tilt and Turn windows open either from the bottom hinge allowing an opening for ventilation or from the side hinge, opening in full. Whilst the façade at the front of the building uses minimal glass to enhance privacy and security, the rear of the building is where Reynaers’ products come to life. The ‘L’ shape plan embraces the views to the West, allowing the large panes of glass to engulf the sunset as it descends. The orientation of the project also ensures natural light bathes all interior scopes throughout the full 12 months of the year. Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, comments: ‘‘Sevendials is a stunning example of our beautiful windows and doors, we are extremely proud to add this to our portfolio of world class residential properties.’’ Wayne Little, Operations Director at Altitude Aluminium, said: “We know how important it is to have excellent products designed to stand up to the worst of the British weather. We often install Reynaers’ products because they not only look fantastic, but tick all the boxes for the latest trends of huge areas of glass, without compromising on comfort, security and warmth.” www.reynaers.co.uk

Scarborough College

Gets A Residence Listing

Residence 9 windows, part of The Residence Collection, have been specified on a listed building refurbishment project at Scarborough College in North Yorkshire, having been approved by planners at Scarborough Local Council and these will be installed over the course of several phases.

Mark Catchpole, sales director at SWC Trade Frames commented: ‘We enjoy commercial contracts, particularly those in our own town. R9 was the obvious, arguably the only choice for the project given the sensitive nature of this listed building and we’re delighted to be part of the project.’

Scarborough College is an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 3 to 18 years and has been providing boarding and day education in Scarborough for nearly 120 years. Given the current state of some of the windows at the school, the decision was made by governors to replace all the glazing and roof as part of a large investment programme.

His thoughts were echoed by Richard Kirby, managing director of Centurion Windows: ‘This is a wonderful project and fulfilled by local companies with a great reputation. R9 is the ultimate window for listed buildings and went through planning with ease and we look forward to completing the remaining phases in due course.’

Local companies have all been employed on the project that involved the manufacture of the grained white, mechanically jointed Residence 9 (R9) windows featuring Georgian bars and monkey tail handles by SWC Trade Frames and installed by Centurion Windows, both Scarborough based companies. With around 150 windows in total, this is one of the larger projects for The Residence Collection, which is being carried out in several phases so as to minimise any disruption with the school.

Sarah Hitchings, sales and marketing director of The Residence Collection concluded: ‘We’re thrilled to be part of this refurbishment project on a listed building, fully proving that R9 is the ultimate heritage casement window and one that’s valued by planners. We’ve even got marketing support materials to help our customers with projects in conservations areas and for these types of buildings, for what was once the domain of timber only. We’re now actively helping to break this way of thinking with considerable success.’centurion windowsscarborough.co.uk

GGF Launches Updated Fire Resistant Glazing Guide Insight Data At

Survival Guides The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) Fire-Resistant Glazing Group (FRGG) has released a revised version of its fire-resistant glazing best practice guide, timing the launch to coincide with the GGF’s presence at this year’s FIREX International exhibition last week at ExCel London. The Guide to Best Practice in the Specification and Use of Fire-Resistant Glazed Systems covers how Fire-Resistant Glazing systems are used to control the spread of fire and smoke, which allows enough time for a safe escape, as well as safe access for fire safety services. Now in its fourth edition, the most recent revision tracks changes in legislation and incorporates updates in line with constant product development undertaken by the construction industry. Adrian Blaydon, GGF Technical Officer and Secretary of the (FRGG) explained, “This Guide is an important document for the construction industry and offers comprehensive knowledge of Fire-Resistant Glazing. In addition, the Guide addresses the performance levels of Fire-Resistant Glazing, and how it is vital to combine the appropriate materials alongside the correct

installation method to certify a Fire-Resisting performance.” The Best Practice Guide is closely associated with Approved Document B for Fire Safety (one of a series of documents that offer a route to building regulation compliance over a range of subjects) which, following the tragic incident at Grenfell Tower in 2017, is currently the focus of the glazing sector. Fire safety has been brought to the fore in the national agenda, and the FRGG remains committed to providing the best industry guidance to protect people from fire and the effects of fire. Fire-Resistant Glazing is critical for safety because it physically separates people and valuable objects from flames, smoke, heat and other products of combustion. Steve Rice, GGF Director of Technical Affairs added, “GGF Members and the industry have contributed to this Guide – from glass suppliers, system fabricators, certifiers and installers. It is very positive that so many are so passionate about fire safety.” Download a free PDF version of the guide here:www.ggf.org.uk/publications/fire-resistant-glazing or to purchase a print copy visit the GGF Shop shop.ggfmembers.com

“Extending our offering and maximising our service is all part of our commitment to do everything we can for our customers to help them confidently enter and win new business in the outdoor living market,” explains Mark. “The academy alone has been a £40,000+ investment but it’s been a worthwhile endeavour as it has allowed us to create the perfect platform to prepare our customers to successfully sell and install our premium aluminium verandas.” www.milwoodgroup.com Well-respected outdoor living specialists the Milwood Group are celebrating the successes of their new Training Academy as it reaches 50 graduates – just three months after opening. The free service covers Milwood’s complete range of aluminium verandas, canopies, carports and glass rooms, and is designed to help customers install and sell verandas with confidence.

“Whilst we design our product range to be as simple as possible to install, for those who are new to the market it can of course be daunting. BM Aluminium

BM Aluminium’s group training sessions are proving increasingly popular with customers who want to make the most of their investments in its LogiKal software programme.

The company has a dedicated training area at its Tewkesbury headquarters where customers can book key members of staff onto cost effective group sessions, rather than having to pay for a BM Aluminium trainer to visit them individually. Two of the design team from commercial aluminium specialists Polar NE took advantage of this option recently and reported that they learned more than enough during their day at Tewkesbury to easily justify the time and money spent. Danielle McGrath and Keir McGill had been using LogiKal for around 3 years before the session, having completed all of their training up to that point

using on-line tutorials. Whilst they were happy with how the software was improving their design and processing efficiency at Polar NE, they felt that it could be doing even more for them.

Perry Mace, BM Aluminium’s Technical Implementation Manager, is responsible for the LogiKal training sessions and encourages everyone who books onto one to make a list of their objectives beforehand so that he can tailor the content each time.

in how they link with Polar’s new CNC machine and how to set up an AutoCAD plug-in.

Danielle said: “It was really useful to go down to Tewkesbury for a dedicated training day, away from all the usual office distractions. We covered everything we wanted and more. Perry was so thorough and clear that it’s been really easy for us to share all our new knowledge with the rest of the group since we got back. We also know now how we could take LogiKal even further into the business in the future, and it has given us a great insight into some exciting future options.”

For Danielle and Keir, their key objectives were to learn how to set up position libraries within LogiKal rather than having to input the details manually each time, and how to input prices so that there is no need to keep these in a separate spreadsheet.

BM Aluminium offers regular group training sessions on LogiKal for up to 4 individuals at a time, each lasting 5 hours with plenty of breaks for coffee and lunch. LogiKal users can register their interest via email: training@bmaluminium.co.uk or via Twitter @BMAluminium.

Not only did they cover both these topics during the session, but Perry also demonstrated

Karen Boosts ME Awareness

Kestrel Turns Out In Force

Golf Day

A short time ago in a golf club not too far away… Kestrel staff teed off at a charity tournament in aid of three children’s charities. The ‘force’ was strong, with almost 200 golfers raising £10,000 at the golf day and evening dinner organised by Norfolk-based DMD Installations.

The personal experience of living with ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) has driven Rapierstar’s Karen Avery to complete a trio of tough physical challenges over a fourmonth period to raise funds for a leading charity dedicated to helping those with the chronic longterm condition, Action for ME. Karen, who heads up the accounts team at Rapierstar, has already successfully completed her first two challenges – the Manchester 10K Great North Run and the Wilmslow Half Marathon – and is now preparing for a demanding 24.5 mile walk to scale the three Yorkshire Peaks in August. Wholeheartedly supported by everyone at Rapierstar, friends, family and her network of customers and suppliers, Karen decided to undertake these three physically demanding challenges to help raise money to support the work of Action for ME, and also to raise awareness of this often misunderstood condition.

I just didn’t get better. I wasn’t able to stand up for more than a few seconds, with no energy to move about the house never mind the outdoors. It makes you feel absolutely awful all the time. “You don’t so much live but exist with this illness, and it takes a long time to learn to live with it. Having support is extremely important as you do not have the energy to fight your corner, which is why Action for ME have been so important to me. Getting through a day is hard enough but if you are alone without a support network with this illness it must be hell. That’s why I’m completing this mammoth triple fundraising challenge!” Action for ME works to empower people with ME to fulfil their potential and secure the care and support they need, while working towards a greater understanding of the illness and ultimately a cure. One of their key objectives, like Karen’s, is to end the ignorance, injustice and neglect experienced by people with ME, by meeting need now to improve the lives of children, adults and families with ME while taking action to secure change for the future.
