GGF, FIT Show & FENSA Forge Partnership to Launch Glass Conference
The Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF), FIT Show and FENSA have announced the launch of Glass Conference, an annual education and networking platform for the glazing industry.
Glass Conference will take place at Telford International Centre on Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th October, 2024. The event will bring together every corner of the glass and glazing industry, from installers and fabricators through to trade counters and systems houses, for two days of unrivalled networking and learning opportunities.
The annual event is designed to serve the needs of the market and has been launched based on compelling demand for an annual networking and education platform to help the industry stay abreast of key legislative and regulatory developments.
FIT Show’s 2023 post event survey identified a clear appetite for an additional touchpoint in the industry calendar. GGF member feedback proposed fewer regional member events and for a more
formal and inclusive event for the industry. After the successful GGF Members Day and Winter Conference last year prompted discussions for a wider industry event, this was the next logical step.
GGF is the most influential trade federation in the industry, with the GGF community of members making up over 60% of the fenestration sector’s £4 billion annual turnover. Speaking about the launch of Glass Conference, GGF Group MD, John Agnew, said: “It gives me great pleasure to announce the launch of Glass Conference. We’ve listened to our members and the market and have responded with the launch of Glass Conference.
“The conference will incorporate GGF Members Day and provide a new touchpoint in our industry’s calendar to bring together every corner of the sector to connect, share best practice, upskill and make proactive steps to elevate the future of fenestration. As a collective, we are committed to creating a platform that will ignite actionable change.”
Across the two days, Glass Conference delegates will listen to keynotes from industry experts, take part in networking, and speak first hand to every link in the supply chain all under one roof. At the end of the first day, the industry will come together for a gala dinner, with entertainment and a less formal networking backdrop.
Sponsors will have a physical presence in the form of stand space and branding opportunities. Experts will be on hand across the two days delivering solutions, practical advice, support and live product demonstrations.
FIT Show is the UK’s only trade show for the sector and has served the industry for over a decade. Event director, Nickie West added: “The launch of Glass Conference symbolises our determination to prioritise touch point opportunities annually for the industry.
“The extensive knowledge of the GGF and FENSA, combined with the data and power of the FIT Show brand is a winning formula for Glass Conference. Our aim is for every attendee to leave not just inspired, but equipped with actionable insights that can transform their day-to-

day operations and the way they approach their business.”
Lis Clarke, Operations Director of FENSA, the governmentauthorised scheme that monitors building regulation compliance for replacement windows and doors, said: “We’re delighted to be collaborating with the GGF and FIT Show to launch the inaugural Glass Conference.
“As an organisation, FENSA’s mission is to improve window and door replacements across England and Wales, by professionalising installers and protecting homeowners. The content that we will be delivering across the two-day event will play a pivotal role in raising standards across the industry, as well as providing a vital platform for the entire industry to network and work together.”
“We have over 6,000 Approved Installers across England & Wales who install more than 500,000 jobs a year. They have huge sway in the industry. Providing the FENSA community with the opportunity to hear from fellow experts and industry leaders is one that we welcome and we can’t wait to see so many of them at Glass Conference in October.”

Tentative Start To 2024 As January Value Sales Slip -2.1% Year On Year
The latest Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) report shows builders’ merchants’ value sales were down -2.1% in January compared to the same month in 2023, with volume sales falling -3.2% and prices creeping up +1.1%. With one more trading day this year, likefor-like sales were down -6.5%.
months from February 2023 to January 2024 were -5.2% down on the same period the year before (February 2022 to January 2023). Volume sales were -12.9% lower and prices were up +8.8%. With two more trading days in the most recent 12-month period, like-for-like sales were -6.0% lower.
Year-on-year, nine of the twelve categories sold more than January 2023 with Workwear & Safetywear (+18.3%), Landscaping (+6.2%) and Decorating (+6.1%) the better performers. However, falling sales in two of the largest categories impacted overall sales: Heavy Building Materials (-3.8%) and Timber & Joinery Products (-6.3%).
Compared to a poor December 2023, total merchant sales in January were +41.2% higher month-on-month. Volume sales were up +44.2% while prices were down -2.1%. With six additional trading days in January, like-for-like sales increased +2.7%. All categories sold more including the largest three categories: Landscaping (+52.2%), Timber & Joinery Products (+43.8%), and Heavy Building Materials (+42.5%). Renewables & Water Saving (+19.4%) grew the least.

Eight of the twelve categories sold more, with Renewables & Water Saving (+20.6%) and Decorating (+8.1%) the standout categories. Again, the three largest categories – Heavy Building Materials (-3.7%), Landscaping (-11.0%) and Timber & Joinery Products (-13.9%) – sold less.
Mike Rigby, managing director of MRA Research which produces the BMBI report says: “After a downbeat end to 2023, 2024 is showing tentative signs of recovery. While construction output is estimated to have decreased -0.9% overall in the three months to January

according to the latest ONS figures, on a sector level, private housing repair and maintenance (+3.2%) improved over that period, and in the month of January private new housing volumes were up +2.6%.
“GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index reports that the dramatic improvements in overall
confidence stalled in February – dropping two points to -21 –but people’s view of their own improving financial situation over the coming 12 months was unaffected. Property prices are creeping up again, interest rates are holding, and the Chancellor recently announced measures to encourage landlords and second homeowners to sell
up. If that doesn’t kickstart the market and create more demand for new homes and home improvements it’s likely the prospect of a new government and homeownerfriendly policies will.”

Leading The Way With 100+ Sales Of Slinova, Says Euroglaze
Barnsley based Euroglaze is rapidly establishing itself as a leading manufacturer of the new Rehau Slinova patio door, with more than 100 manufactured and supplied since the product was launched last October.
As well as supplying to stockists and installers, Euroglaze has already won a major contract with a housing developer in Stockport to supply the minimalist, contemporary styled Slinova for a new build project.
Slinova is Rehau’s newest high performance door, designed with modern homes in mind. Slim sightlines and maximum amounts of glass bring in as much natural light as possible and a discreet 80mm frame depth means the door is ideal for both new builds and refurbishments, says the company.
There is a visible frame and sash width of just
129mm, and it can be used to fabricate doors up to 4m wide and 2.4m high. Colour choices include white, rosewood, golden oak, black, cream and slate and anthracite grey, with the option for dual colours inside and out to match interior décor.
Martin Nettleton, Euroglaze’s managing director, says Slinova is the right door for the current marketplace: “Homeowners are very aware now of the benefits of natural light and are increasingly choosing sliders over bifolds because there is a higher glass to frame ratio, and they can help to make a room feel more spacious.
“The feedback we’re getting from our trade and commercial customers has been outstanding and that’s translating into strong sales and high levels of enquiries.”
Martin Nettleton adds: “We’re very proud of our status as the ‘go to’ fabricator for Rehau –our comprehensive offering means Euroglaze customers never miss out on new business opportunities, and they get the same consistent high quality and truly personal service no matter what they buy from us.”

UN Recognition For Reynaers’ Sustainability Strategy
Reynaers Aluminium UK has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting environmental initiatives and regulations following the company’s global sustainability strategy being recognised by the United Nations, says the company.
The UN has awarded Reynaers Group the SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) Pioneer label for its ambitious sustainability work. Through the international certificate, the UN recognises companies that have adopted effective current and long-term
sustainability initiatives.
Since 2022, all the company’s long-term sustainability commitments and goals have been documented in its sustainability strategy Reynaers Act, focusing on reducing carbon emissions in both direct and indirect operations.
Whilst the recently released consultation documents relating to the Future Homes Standard revisions in 2025 has given the industry mixed news, Reynaers continues to underline its
commitment to developing innovative solutions to support sustainable building design. This includes creating systems with improved thermal efficiency and increasing the number of Cradle to Cradle products it manufactures.
Technical director at Reynaers Aluminium UK, John McComb is also the company’s sustainability champion, which sees him take an active part in developing systems that are fit for the future demands of the UK market, including leading the technical team in adapting European systems to meet UK specifications.
He said: “It’s great to see the work that Reynaers is doing to support more sustainable practices, and to create systems that will support sustainable building design, recognised at such a high level.
“Reynaers is committed to testing, innovation and constantly improving the performance of its windows, doors and façade systems, including thermal efficiency. With a team of technical experts both at the global headquarters and here in the UK, the company is continually working to reach its sustainability goals – and those of the wider UK and global communities, including upcoming changes to building legislation.
“This approach is evident in the latest generation of Reynaers’ products, created with sustainability in mind, including the MasterPatio sliding door, which is Cradle to Cradle certified and made with recycled materials; and the MasterLine 8 and 10 systems, which offer Passive House levels of insulation without compromising on aesthetics.
“Through Reynaers Act, we lay out our commitment to a more sustainable way of working and this recognition is another step forward.”

Are You Meeting Your Legal Duties Under RPS 291?
Waste and recycling firms are being urged to check whether they are meeting their legal duties under RPS 291 – including sharing test results with the WRA – as active compliance checks by the Environment Agency kick in.
Under Regulatory Position Statement 291, introduced in November 2023, operators who handle certain kinds of potentially hazardous ‘amber’ waste wood* from demolition can move and process it as non-hazardous – provided they meet certain conditions.
Crucially, says the WRA, material must be tested at least once a quarter and the results must be shared with the WRA, who will issue a WRA Submission Report. Only with a valid Submission
Report can companies achieve compliance.
The call from the WRA and
Environment Agency (EA) on March 4th comes as the EA is starting to ask operators to see WRA Submissions Reports as evidence that they or their supply chain are participating in testing and data sharing.
Howard Leberman, senior advisor at the Environment Agency, said: “In order to be compliant with RPS 291, operators who take amber items of waste wood must check that it is being tested at least once per quarter and results are shared with the WRA.
“We’re now past the first quarter so are actively looking for WRA Submission Reports to confirm participation.”
Sharing results
The WRA says it is critical that test results are shared with the WRA so it can build up an evidence base which it is hoped will demonstrate that more items are non-hazardous. This means they would no longer have to be subject to hazardous waste controls and high costs when the RPS is removed in October 2024.
Vicki Hughes, technical lead on the WRA Board, said: “We are now seeing the Environment Agency asking sites to see their WRA Submission Reports to demonstrate compliance. These Submission Reports can only be obtained by sharing test results with the WRA and sadly, some sites are paying for testing but not sharing their data so are seen as non-compliant.
“Under the RPS, it is the producer of the waste – whoever generated or first handled the waste – who is responsible for testing the material.
“However, in practice this means that many further up the supply chain who process waste wood from multiple sources will also have to test as part of their acceptance process and gain a

Vicki Hughes
WRA Submission Report unless they can demonstrate that all the material they handle is already compliant.”
“All test results are anonymous and operators only need to identify and test one of the ten potentially hazardous items each quarter to comply.
“The amber items are not that easy to find, so if you find one of these items, it is advisable to take a sample for testing straight away to ensure compliance for that quarter. It is important to note that once the sample has been taken and sent to a lab for WRA 02 testing, the tested item does not need to be stored separately while awaiting the results and can be moved immediately as nonhazardous.”
Compliance
Vicki continued: “RPS 291 makes it much less onerous for operators to demonstrate compliance than previously. After the removal of RPS 250 in September 2023, operators were required to test all potentially hazardous material, creating a lot of cost and confusion. Now operators are only required to test one item per quarter, although we would encourage anyone with multiple items to test as many as possible to allow us to build up data quickly.
“However, RPS 291 is only temporary so it is critical that we gather as many test results as possible before it expires in October to demonstrate that more items are non-hazardous. This will cut red tape and ensure as much waste wood as possible is recycled and save the industry significant sums.”
“Please note we are looking for tests on material with non-visible treatments, not obviously treated material which we know to be hazardous or painted items. We also only need one wood type
sample per site, rather than multiple samples of the same item.”
Toolkit
Operators can use the WRA Toolkit for a step-by-step guide to how to identify amber material, take samples and send them off for testing and also find a list of approved WRA member laboratories.
Material should be tested according to the WRA02 testing suite but this does not mean the results will automatically be shared with the WRA, so operators need to ask their laboratories to do this. There is no need to pay extra to determine whether the material is hazardous or not, unless you need this information for another purpose, as all results are analysed in-house by the WRA.
Vicki added: “We are now seeing more amber material being tested which is really encouraging as the EA has asked us for a monthly update to ensure we meet the timelines set. Therefore, if you are still unsure how to gain compliance then please don’t hesitate to consult the WRA’s Waste Wood Classification Toolkit or get in touch with us directly.”
*Amber items of waste wood are from buildings built between 1950 and 2006 and are:
• Roof timbers
• Tiling and cladding battens
• Timber frames and joists
Amber items of waste wood are also from buildings built between 1950 and 1995 and are:
• barge boards, fascias and soffits
• external timber cladding
• external doors
• external windows

Further Investment In People, IT and Machinery At Cornwall Group
Cornwall Group is on target to invest £5 million in plant, machinery and IT over the next 18 months, which will help to improve efficiency, train colleagues, and maintain the high levels of quality the company is known for.
This figure is in addition to the acquisition of Birmingham-based Forward Glass that Cornwall Group announced in December 2023.
Key areas of investment will be plant and machinery, IT, and the group’s high profile apprenticeship scheme.
“Plant and machinery is at the forefront of most of that £5 million in 2024 and 2025, including two toughening plants,” Cornwall Group’s chair Mark Mitchell said. “As a growing group of glass businesses, our investment must be strategic. There are several parts to the group and they all would like something different and
new, so we definitely have a plan.
“Hopefully it won’t be thrown off course with inflation and the state of the economy. But we take a longer view than businesses that have multiple stakeholders. Our view is with an eye on the five-toten-year horizon, which means we are fit for purpose, and on the front foot, when the market recovers.
“We want to be leading the market rather than playing catch up.”
Cornwall Group – which includes Mackenzie Glass, Cornwall Manufacturing, commercial glazing and retail arm Cornwall Glass & Glazing, and the newly acquired Forward Glass – has a policy of ploughing profits back into the business, into people, machinery and buildings.
“We’ve got a very simple shareholder model, and we want to continue to grow a sustainable business, not one driven by short-term growth,” Mark said.
Investment in 2023 included a new fire saw, cutting line, and bevelling and processing equipment at Mackenzies; a new heat soak oven at the company’s site in Plymouth, which can handle large units up to 4.2m x 2.7m; and a new £1.5m Bystronic Sealed Unit Line at its St Austell site, which replaced a similar line that was installed 20 years ago.
“We are confident that this approach is the best way to continue building a business that is fit for the next generation of glass professionals,” Mark concluded.

NSG Group Recognised As A Leader On Climate Change Action
The NSG Group, parent company of Pilkington UK, has been recognised as a leader on climate change action by not-for-profit charity CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), according to the company.
CDP upgraded the NSG Group’s Climate Change Leadership rating from B to A-.
An A- rating recognises companies that are implementing current best practices on climate change. The score is higher than the materials sector average of B, which reflects companies demonstrating coordinated action
on climate issues. The not-forprofit runs a global disclosure system for investors, companies, and government authorities to manage their environmental impact on climate change, water security, and deforestation.
The rating improvement follows the NSG Group’s latest architectural glass Pilkington Mira having been independently verified as the lowest embodied carbon glass of its kind, with 52% less embodied carbon when compared to standard float glass. The NSG Group has set a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030
compared to 2018 levels and has been certified as a Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). As part of this, it aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, says the company.
Pilkington UK recently attended Futurebuild 24 to showcase the glass, which was pioneered using a combination of alternative fuel, high recycled glass content, and green electricity sources.
Kristian Chalmers, global strategic commercial manager in Architectural Glass SBU, NSG Group, said: “Decarbonising the built environment relies on building product manufacturers like Pilkington UK taking decisive action on climate change. If glass can be manufactured in a more sustainable way, then we can reduce the environmental impact of the world’s buildings.
“Achieving an improved

climate change rating by CDP reflects how serious we take our responsibility towards the environment. This forms a key part of our purpose to ‘makechange‘, which is focused on delivering advanced glass that helps developers and asset-owners to meet their environmental ambitions, while transforming our own operations to meet the needs of decarbonisation.”
David Cast, climate change director, at the NSG Group, said: “CDP has been at the forefront of climate disclosure for two decades, helping to standardise sustainability reporting globally. Having our score improve to an A- rating is a truly fantastic result and testament to the hard work of our global teams. We are excited to see where our sustainability story takes us, and to continue leading on climate change action for the benefit of the built environment.”

Leads 2 Trade Reports A 38% Rise In Inquiries For Single Composite Doors
The UK’s provider of double qualified sales leads for installers in the home improvement industry saw a big increase in single composite door leads at the start of 2024 – and it is showing no signs of slowing down, according to the company.
Leads 2 Trade experienced a 38% increase in composite doors/single door lead volumes in January 2024 compared to January 2023.
Andy Royle, co-founder and director of Leads2Trade, puts the rise down to homeowners wanting to increase the energy efficiency of their home and the strengthening of Leads 2 Trade’s digital marketing team.
“Alongside windows, front and back doors are the biggest source of heat loss in a home,” said Andy, “and homeowners are looking at replacing their old and worn external doors with
high performance thermally efficient doors to reduce draughts, keep their home warmer and cut heating bills.
“Many of our installer members want big ticket items or multiple window or door leads, but we are getting a huge number of enquiries for single front/ back composite doors and consumers looking for specific door companies. And, of course, the chance is also there for installers to potentially upsell.”
“The strengthening of our digital marketing team has also played a significant part in this increase, and we are looking forward to increasing our single composite door lead volumes, matching homeowners with the right installers from our member network and providing our customers with the leads they want.”

Endurance Doors Continues Carbon Offsetting Commitment
Endurance Doors is building on its already impressive commitment to sustainability.
As part of its robust environmental policies, the manufacturer of composite doors has used carbon offsetting since 2022 to compensate for any unpreventable carbon emissions caused by its operations.
The business has now entered into a new partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain that will enable it to continue this important activity.
Formed in 2020, Carbon Neutral Britain is one of the UK’s largest carbon offsetting organisations. It is supported by both individuals and organisations who are looking to play a positive and
proactive role in combating climate change.
By investing in different carbon capture or reduction projects around the world, Carbon Neutral Britain enables its partners to balance out their carbon footprint.
To date, it has backed projects that have seen additional trees planted in UK woodland, in the Amazon rainforest, and in African mangrove forests. It has also been instrumental in the construction of new wind and solar energy farms.
Endurance Doors ultimately plans to work with Carbon Neutral Britain to become a fully and independently verified carbon neutral organisation certified to
the highest global standards.
Carbon offsetting is just one of the many ways in which Endurance Doors is working to minimise its environmental impact.
The business also utilises energy from renewable sources, including solar panels on its factory roof, and makes widespread use of electric vehicles.
In addition, the company says it sends zero waste to landfill, employs recycled materials wherever possible, and uses timber to produce its doors from trees grown in sustainably managed, PEFC and FSC certified North European forests.
Commenting on the manufacturer’s new partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain, Andrew Speakman, commercial director at Endurance Doors, said: “Endurance Doors is proud to be at the forefront of developing more sustainable solutions for the fenestration market.
“We recognise the urgent need for all individuals and organisations to do more to combat the environmental issues facing our planet. We also know that many homeowners are looking to do their part by making more environmentally responsible product choices.
“To address both requirements, we never stop looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint, to control our resource consumption and to minimise our waste contribution.
“Our new partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain reflects that commitment to ever higher standards of environmental performance.”

Homeowner Leads Go hup! And hup!
Following the announcement that BBC star Laura Jane Clark is the new Brand Ambassador for its hup! building system, Ultraframe has announced that the ensuing consumer PR campaign has resulted in an unprecedented number of homeowner leads that are now being distributed to hup! installers across the UK.
Commenting about the success of hup!’s consumer PR launch, Ultraframe marketing director, Alex Hewitt, said: “Across 2024 we are aiming to put hup! at the forefront of homeowner’s minds when they are looking to extend their home or transform an old conservatory. We’re doing this by raising awareness of hup! as well as building trust and credibility in the system, sharing expertise, and ultimately – generating enquiries.”
Consumer press launch events in London and Manchester provided the opportunity for journalists to meet with Laura Jane Clark and the hup! team, learn about the system, and meet ‘real life case studies’ –homeowners who have already had a hup! built. The enthusiasm shown for the system at the events and the coverage that has followed has been phenomenal, says Ultraframe, with pieces in the Sunday Times, Ideal Home, and more. Leads for hup! partners are said to have gone through the roof as a result, in fact, many have commented that due to the speed and ease of a hup! build coupled with the high number of leads coming through, they are now working to restructure their businesses to focus on hup! builds.
Continuing, Alex said: “To help our installers manage this increase in demand effectively, we are launching The hup! Partner Network which is a network of ambitious companies who effectively sell, specify and build hup! extensions. We’re now actively recruiting new hup! Network Partners, building a community of highly effective hup! salespeople and providing hardworking tools to help them with doing this. We would encourage any hup! installers who

are not already signed up to the hup! Partner Network to do so quickly to take advantage of this fantastic new system.
“To help our hup! Network Partners manage the huge number of quality leads that we are receiving we have developed and launched a new leads management system. Features include individual sales person lead dashboards where leads can be managed, text and email lead notifications sent direct to sales people, a comprehensive hup! training platform, and more.
“It is a wonderful feeling to see the system we believe in so passionately growing so quickly –hup! is even becoming a relevant search term on google! It proves that even in a difficult market there is a strong demand for a system that addresses the many issues associated with a traditional build. If you’d like to be a part of the building revolution, please do get in touch and soon you could be building the better way with hup!.”

NBP Declares Transparency In Construction Pricing
As frustration over inconsistent pricing practices in construction increases, Northern Building Plastics (NBP) has taken a bold step in its commitment to customers.
Declaring consistent product pricing across all four of its super depots, located in Birtley, Bolton, Hinckley and Leeds, NBP has also revealed a customised and highly competitive pricing approach for each trade sector.
“We understand the frustration caused by fluctuating prices in our industry, and that is the driving force behind our guaranteed standard of transparency and consistency across all Northern Building Plastics depots,” explains Steve Jones, sales director at NBP.
“We know that if customers purchase products at a higher price than what was initially quoted or previously supplied, it has a massive impact on their profit.
“Fluctuation in material costs can be the difference between making money and losing money on a job. By offering consistent competitive prices
across all our super depots, we are providing our customers with peace of mind, and they know exactly what to expect when purchasing from any of our depots.”
In a market where supplier product prices can vary from depot to depot, hour to hour, and staff member to staff member, NBP’s commitment to a consistent pricing structure underscores its dedication to not just serving but also modernising the construction supply landscape.
Steve explains: “We’ve been building highly competitive price lists for different customer types like builders, roofers, commercial contractors, and window installers into our system to offer bespoke pricing packages.”
“So, if you walk into NBP and tell me that you’re [a] builder or a window installer for example, then we will tailor a pricing package to your account in seconds. That way customers are getting highly competitive pricing on the ranges that are important to their specific trade.”

Quality, Not Price, Drives Doors Sales,
AccordingTo New Customer Research From Hurst
Product quality, product range and customer service are the most important factors when choosing a door supplier, according to a customer survey conducted by Hurst to gather exclusive insights into installers’ views of the market.
And when it came to the door itself, 62% of respondents believed that the most important factor when selling a door to an end-user is its appearance and design, with 78% stating that they had seen an increase in demand for bespoke colours from homeowners.
Price in both cases fell some way down the list of priorities.
“We are always looking at ways to enhance how we can support our customers”, Mark Atkinson, Hurst sales director, said. “Whether this is through our marketing package, our glass designs, or our investment in our product range, our focus is always on giving customers the tools and support to generate business.”
Hurst is also helping its customers meet the increased homeowner demand for colour by investing in a new £200k state-of-the-art paint shop at its site in Hull.
“For us, there is no better way to understand the needs of our customers than by speaking to them directly, to get their view on the market,” Mark said.
The survey revealed that most respondents expect demand to remain stable for all staple door materials throughout 2024, with foam core composite doors voted as most likely to increase compared to other materials, and traditional timber doors most likely to decrease.
For Hurst customers who supply multiple entrance door material types, foam core composite doors proved the most popular material, with 66% of
TRADE NEWS 20 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
respondents stating that they form over half of their sales.
Interestingly, while back doors remain the most common installation location for Hurst customers who purchase PVC-U door panels, 45% of installers are installing the majority of their panels into front doors.
Mark explains that because of this continued high demand, Hurst launched a brand-new panel brochure at the beginning of April, showcasing exciting new designs and colours available in their panel collection.
Fire doors proved divisive among installers, with only 39% of respondents stating they form part of their offering. While the main reason cited by 69% of the installers who do not offer fire doors is a lack of demand, 25% said that they don’t feel they possess the necessary skillset or qualification to install fire doors, and 21% stated that they were not confident around the regulations.
“Technical data sheets and comprehensive installation instructions have always been available from Hurst, and we refer our customers to third party installation training bodies, such as BM Trada, if they enquire about certified installation training,” Mark said.
“But based on the research, we are reviewing the tools available and how we can provide more support to our customers on the installation and legislation surrounding fire doors.”
Hurst customers will be supplied with an exclusive whitepaper of the full set of results in May 2024.

DGCOS Introduces Two And Six Year Registration Options
The Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) has introduced two and six year registration options, aiming to alleviate confusion and assist installers in mitigating financial strain.
Faisal Hussain, chief executive, explains: “We have seen through our mediation process how much time it can take for installers to deal with customers when the guarantee is not clearly worded and consumers believe that they are covered for everything. Installers then often end up meeting some or all of the costs to replace components. Within building regulations, under Competent Person Schemes, an installer self-certifying only has to provide six years’ financial protection for customers, and the same for consumer protection.
“Often a customer believes that if anything goes wrong with any part of their installation, they are covered for replacements for that 10-year period, but that is incorrect. Frames may be covered for 10 years,
but as per manufacturers’ warranties, individual units or smaller items like locks and handles, are often only covered for 5 years. Issues such as condensation may well not be covered at all.
“In the spirit of clarifying this confusion, DGCOS now offers 2 and 6 year registration options for installers. They are more cost effective, so can reduce the financial pressure on a business, yet members who opt for a shorter registration receive the same installer benefits as if they were taking the full 10 year option, which is still available. They also make it easier for an installer to explain to a customer exactly what is covered and for how long. The six year option is ideal for covering panes and units; the two year option for smaller items such as locks and handles.
“The 10-year registration is always going to be available, particularly if installers are members of Fensa, who are required to offer this longer timeframe.
“However, our shorter registration options offer benefits for both installers and customers; they help reduce the time installers spend on unnecessary callbacks; reduce the financial burden on the industry as a whole, while still meeting requirements.”

Emplas Achieves Group-Wide IIP Status At The First Attempt
Emplas has achieved Investors In People (IIP) status across the entire Emplas Group in the UK.
It means Emplas, Padiham Glass, Acorn Aluminium and T&K Home Improvements join only a handful of building products manufacturers and home improvement companies to hold the high-profile accreditation.
The award represents a significant achievement and recognition of the investment that Emplas is making in its teams but also infrastructure
and service offer.
Alison Markham, Group HR director, said the successful assessment was all the more significant because it had been achieved right across the Group – and on its very first attempt.
She explained: “As part of the assessment there are nine indicators and three themes or categories in each. You only need to miss one of those 27 themes and you fail the assessment, so the Group
approach increased the stakes significantly.
“There’s nowhere to hide in a sense, everything and everyone is reviewed from the directors to individual employees and that highlights things that as an organisation you do really well, and any development areas.“
“To achieve IIP is a recognition of how much progress has been made over the last two to three years, and the commitment that has been made to our people strategy. We’ve grown significantly but still retain a very strong service-led culture.”
The work to achieve IIP accreditation which started in June 2023, was based on a confidential organisational-wide survey; leadership presentations; interviews with 50 employees chosen at random; and documentary evidence from the central HR team against nine separate indicators.
TRADE NEWS 26 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
These included leading and inspiring people; living organisational values and behaviours; empowering and involving people; managing performance; recognising and rewarding high performance; structuring work and building capability; delivering continuous improvement; and creating sustainable success.
In their report, issued in February, assessors highlighted Emplas’ commitment to be an ‘employer of choice’, as noteworthy, alongside consistent year-onyear growth.
They also commended its lead in digital transformation, including EVA, the Emplas Virtual Assistant and customer portal. This recently saw it introduce realtime delivery tracking, two-hour delivery slots and 20-minute push notifications ahead of arrival.
The assessment also highlighted Emplas’ extensive accreditations, underlying organisational stability and commitment to invest and to continuous improvement, which it said contributed to a ‘collective optimism across the group for the company’s future and the commitment of its people to continued success’.
Ryan Johnson, Emplas Group managing director, said: “We want to be a leader, not only in terms of the industries we work within directly, but to benchmark ourselves against the very best manufacturing businesses in the UK.
“We’re making exceptional progress, but we recognise that we have room for growth.
“IIP is a fantastic achievement but also supports us in identifying those areas to build on to drive cultural growth and ultimately a world-class level of manufacture and service to our customers.”

Dekko Celebrates Nine-Year Partnership With Reynaers
Dekko Window Systems is marking a nine-year partnership with aluminium specialist Reynaers, highlighting a successful period of innovation and a dedication to delivering outstanding quality, according to the company.
Since partnering in 2015, Dekko has manufactured premium Reynaers aluminium products under the Räum name, including bi-fold doors which offer a contemporary appearance, sliding patio doors that are available as either a horizontal triple track sliding door or with a lift and slide opening system, and slimline windows, suitable for a wide range of applications, from commercial installations to modern residential developments.
Räum has seen continual success and growth over the years at Dekko, proven by the 2020 investment in a new 25,000 square foot aluminium manufacturing facility,
dedicated exclusively to its production, says the company.
Dekko sales director Kurt Greatrex comments: “For nine years, we have been privileged to manufacture Reynaers’ stunning windows and doors, and from the very beginning, it’s been a prosperous collaboration that goes beyond mere product fabrication.
“Our relationship with Reynaers is rooted in shared innovation and a pursuit for excellence – their premium systems have played an integral role in enhancing our product offerings and allowing us to consistently deliver exceptional solutions to our customers.

Kömmerling Impress at Huthwaite Event
Under the Kömmerling brand, profine UK Ltd recently hosted a trade press event at its Huthwaite facility to showcase the considerable investment in people, products and processes that has been undertaken since acquiring the site in 2020.
A £multi-million investment programme is in place and shows no sign of slowing down thanks to the commitment of parent company profine Group, helping to transform the site into a worldclass manufacturing facility.
profine UK’s diversification strategy will see export sales grow considerably over the next five years including Kömmerling 70mm PVCu systems and
WarmCore, a revolutionary hybrid platform. WarmCore heavily featured on Kömmerling’s stand at Fensterbau Frontale, Nuremberg, Germany, this year which took place from the 19th to the 22nd of March.
During the visit, details on a new partnership scheme, Kömmerling At Home, were announced.
This new initiative has been designed to better support existing manufacturing and installer partners with not only consumer leads, but support tools and useful assets for marketing, technical and business needs, up-todate industry-related news, and access to a greater
understanding of Kömmerling’s extensive product range.
Kevin Warner, sales and marketing director of profine UK and Kömmerling commented: “We feel the programme will provide key benefits for our partners to help them grow and succeed. It is designed to educate, impart knowledge and strengthen their ability to work with Kömmerling in order to enhance their long-term relationship with us.”
It was also announced that there will be a renewed focus on WarmCore with Andrew Charlesworth having now been appointed as Director Global Category Management – WarmCore from his previous position of technical director of Kömmerling in the UK.
Andrew highlighted the fact that WarmCore has been designed to accommodate triple glazing from the outset and can achieve 1.3
TRADE NEWS 28 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
(W/m2K) double glazed and down to 0.80 (W/m2K) triple glazed as standard. Additionally, Andrew said that residential, double patio and bi-folding doors also provide impressive thermal insulating properties – 1.4 (W/m2K) double glazed and down to 1.0 (W/m2K) triple glazed.
The factory tour included the newly opened Design Centre, which will be used to host visits from Kömmerling’s customers, prospects and business associates. Many of the features contained within the Design Centre have been cleverly repurposed from the company’s stand at FIT Show 2022 and includes a full range of the company’s window and door systems.
A redesigned office configuration at Huthwaite was also impressive to see, especially given the use of a range of new sheet products, produced by the company from recycled PVCu, to form the
walls and partitioning of offices, shower rooms, a gym and new canteen for employees.
The scale of transformation that has taken place at the site came as somewhat of a surprise to those present, and Robert Thiroff, managing director of profine UK and Kömmerling, explained: “We created a detailed plan of investment here in Huthwaite from the very start of the acquisition with a clear vision of how we wanted the business to grow.
“Creating stronger relations
with our supply-chain partners through Kömmerling At Home and being able to provide an avenue where we sell UK designed products such as WarmCore globally will bring fantastic benefits,” Robert continued, “but, we still have ongoing investment plans across the business. We will continue to thrive through the development of our people, products and services, including a programme of sustainability for solar PV, recycling and the integration of profine Energy.”

Sheerline Reveals Installation Of The Month Winner
Towards the end of 2023, Sheerline announced that its Installation of the Month Competition was open to entries. The company is delighted
to reveal January’s winner was Bristol-based Maynard Windows for their submission featuring Shaftesbury Elms, an exclusive development in Frenchay.
The competition was launched so installers could showcase their work while highlighting the versatility of Sheerline’s products. Shaftesbury Elms is a great example of this, showing how the Prestige range was used across three unique properties.
Every product was produced in RAL 9005 (Jet
TRADE NEWS 30 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
Black), and aside from ensuring consistent styling across the development, it shows how this broad range seamlessly works together. For instance, to the front, two of the properties have double height glazed entrances with large picture windows. This adds the wow factor when approaching the development and showcases how important natural light is in modern properties. Each property has oversized windows to flood the space with light without compromising on the privacy of the residents.
Meanwhile, to the rear of the properties, French doors plus casement and fixed windows help to ensure the design brief, of combining traditional features with a contemporary aesthetic, was achieved.
Aside from presenting three beautiful homes, the Shaftesbury Elms project reflects the collaboration required within the fenestration industry to ensure a consistently high-quality finish across projects. With Maynard Windows selecting Master Plastics to fabricate the Sheerline products required.
Matt from Maynard Windows said: “This was the first time I’d entered Sheerline’s competition and would recommend other installers have a go. It’s so easy to move on from an installation – whether it’s a new build, renovation, or development, but actually, it’s really worth revisiting those projects because this is something that I can share with future clients who haven’t decided what style or look they want to achieve.”
Dave Wigley, head of marketing, commented: “Matt put forward a strong entry for December, hence why he won the competition. It’s fantastic to see the different applications for Sheerline’s products – we know how versatile they are, but it’s great to see them showcased like this. The Shaftesbury Elms development is a stunning example of the difference well-chosen windows and doors can make.”
Entering is easy as the only requirement is to submit a photo or video either via email or social media detailing the Sheerline products that have been installed, where the project is, and any other useful information such as the RAL colours and the purpose of the installation.
Installers who choose to enter via social media are encouraged to @ mention Sheerline so the entry can easily be shared. The deadline to submit is the end of each month to be in with a chance of winning a £100 Amazon voucher.

ISO Chemie’s Andy Swift (left) with Andy Sykes, Internorm commercial Set to open in late summer 2024, the extension will provide an exhibition gallery with immersive interpretation, a flexible learning space for school children and community groups, and washrooms.
It’s also part of the cathedral’s ambition to carry out a wide-ranging £11 million revamp of the Grade II listed historic building and improve facilities for the
increasing number of visitors drawn to the tomb of Richard III.
Passivhaus certified and fire rated to up to 30 minutes, Winframer is a prefabricated installation frame, manufactured to accommodate cavities up to 250mm that allows windows to be supported independently from the face of the wall regardless of any external cladding being in place, claims the company.
Quick and easy to install, the product’s application at Leicester Cathedral has been integrated alongside ISO Bloco One sealing tapes to achieve Passivhaus certified window perimeter sealing performance. The flexible humidity variable sealing foil ISO-Connect Vario SD tape has also been chosen to deliver greater internal air tightness around wall, floor and ceiling joints.

According to the company, up to 70% cost savings can be achieved using ISO-Chemie’s tapes, which enable installers to seal windows from inside the building and avoid the need to use time consuming and costly scaffolding and ladders among other external access systems. The tapes offer a single product ‘fit and forget’ solution for fast and effective sealing based around the European RAL principles of three level sealing – the inside seal area is more airtight than the external one, allowing any trapped moisture inside the joint, or within the wall, to escape outwards rather than into the building, www.iso-chemie.eu/en-GB/home

Debar – Championing British Manufacturing
A recent speech delivered by the Minister for Industry and Economic Security at Make UK’s National Manufacturing Conference showed incredible support for UK manufacturing.
During her keynote address, Nusrat Ghani MP, urged attendees to disregard any claims that Britain doesn’t make anything anymore. Despite the current global economic difficulties, she has no doubt that the country has always and will always be a manufacturing powerhouse.
One company which has similar ambitions and beliefs regarding UK manufacturing is bi-fold hardware manufacturer Debar.
Since the Bradford-based firm launched more than 15 years ago, the company has manufactured and supplied hundreds of thousands of shootbolt locks and handles, bifold hinges, guides, rollers and
much more to companies across the world.
While the business operates on a global scale, it is fully committed to keeping its main manufacturing headquarters firmly embedded within the UK.
Peter Sutcliffe, MD at Debar, said: “Being a British manufacturer is something we’re incredibly proud of at Debar.
“Although our operations have expanded and we now have a number of partnerships overseas and in the middle east, we have consciously made the decision – as a business – to continue manufacturing our products at our main site in West Yorkshire.
“Keeping manufacturing within the UK has a fantastic impact on the country and we’re not planning to change this any time soon.”
Supporting the UK manufacturing sector
Operating as a British manufacturer creates incredible opportunities not just for Debar as a business, but for the country as a whole. In fact, there is a whole host of economical, social and environmental benefits associated with manufacturing within the UK.
“From boosting economic growth through job creation to maintaining better control over the production process and supply chain, we’ve seen incredible results from developing our products within our warehouse in Bradford,” adds Peter.
“Although the world continues to battle the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic, the UK manufacturing sector is thriving and helping to drive growth up and down the country.”
Passionate to make a real difference to not just the future of the construction industry but the UK economy overall, Debar recently participated in an

innovative trade mission backed by the Department of Business and Trade.
While the trade mission focused specifically on sustainability, Debar’s involvement on this project also allowed the team to join an ambitious group designed to help create a prosperous economy within the cities and surrounding areas in the North of England.
“We’re incredibly proud to be involved in this initiative working alongside other ambitious and forward-thinking construction business based in the North,” explains Peter.
“We’ll be sure to make the most of this fantastic opportunity to share our experience and insight to support the wider construction industry.”
The future of manufacturing
In her speech, Nusrat Ghani MP, also discussed the future of British manufacturing and highlighted that to stay in the game companies will need to be ahead of the game.
With their finger firmly on the pulse of the latest trends and revelations within the construction industry, Debar is already focusing heavily on innovation in design and manufacturing. In fact, the team has been exploring key lean manufacturing principles to refine and improve its existing design and production processes.
“As a company, we have a real commitment to quality and excellence,” adds Peter.
“Reviewing our operations and applying the lean manufacturing principles will help us to not only guarantee we produce highquality products, but we’ll also become more efficient as a British manufacturer – which is something we’re incredibly passionate about.”

Comp Door Invests to Sustain Growth & Product Innovation
To sustain continued growth and unrivalled service levels, Comp Door are continually reinvesting into their business, and have taken delivery of a four-headed quad welder from Avantek, symbolising a significant improvement to the manufacturing process that will directly drive efficiencies for the existing and growing customer base.
The Quad Welder drives fast and accurate inline welds elevating the perfection and finish of the welded corners, further improving the quality of the products. Whilst also speeding up the manufacturing process considerably, enabling Comp Door to expand capacity.
Richard Diliberto, director at Comp Door, said: “We have seen a large upturn in demand for our products, and this recent investment of innovative technologies and automated machinery will allow us to
further improve our production efficiencies in line with customer demand and lead times. We firmly believe in actively listening to our customers and evolving our products to match, but most often exceed those expectations!”
In addition to the new quad welder, the past six months have seen significant investment. Pierre Mifsud, managing director at Comp Door explains, “With our growth strategy at our core, we have also invested in a Haffner SBA 4 Machining Centre, added two new additional delivery vans to our fleet, acquired a Vacuum Former, two CNC’s, a new wrapping machine, a new CNC Corner Cleaner, plus a new Edgebander! DoorCo Expand
UK Operations with New Facility in Doncaster
In its latest, and potentially biggest move yet, composite doors supplier DoorCo has unveiled plans to open a new manufacturing factory in Doncaster. Head of operations, Mark Towers, discusses the new facility.
“DoorCo is known for leading the way with innovation, so creating a space where we could manufacture new products right here in the UK felt like a natural next step for us. Our new facility in Doncaster, spanning across 20,000 square feet at present, is a space for us to create,” says Mark.
“Doubling as both a manufacturing factory and R&D space, this new facility allows us to have a UKbased location to produce new products on a full-time basis whilst also testing new concepts and working on bespoke projects.
“One of the most exciting parts of the new DoorCo Manufacturing
space is that it will become the home of a new brand which is yet to be released. We’re the proud owners of Original, Gripcore and Flip but we knew there was an obvious opening for the addition of a new product and we’re in the final stages of bringing this to market now.
“Due to be in full production this Spring, with the entire operation taking place out of Doncaster, we’re excited to add this UKmade brand to our portfolio.”
Discussing the recruitment opportunities that this new facility has provided, Mark explains “One of the greatest parts of opening a new facility in a new location is the ability to be able to provide the area with job opportunities.
“We’re proud to be one of Macclesfield’s largest employers, so it’s great to be able to now

The Residence Collection Comments On The Government Plan To Review Historic Properties Energy Efficiency Barriers
At the beginning of 2024, the Government announced an energy efficiency drive for heritage homes in the UK.
This drive is set to review the wide range of barriers homeowners face when looking to future proof their homes, whilst protecting their heritage. The review will also explore how these barriers are placing restrictions on the UK achieving Net Zero status by 2050.
With approximately 5.9 million properties built before 1919 in the UK(1), owners of these heritage buildings face difficult restrictions when looking to upgrade them structurally. With the appropriate energy saving measures, owners of buildings built before 1919 could save approximately £428 per year on their energy costs, showing
the necessity of the Government’s review, according to the company.
The Residence Collection’s sales & marketing director, Sarah Hitchings has shared her thoughts on the drive and the barriers homeowners face when it comes to upgrades and energy efficiency in heritage properties.
“Trying to change anything in a historic property or conservation area is a long drawn-out process, which can be immensely timely and costly.
“One of the biggest barriers for all homeowners of these properties is that every local authority’s planning department is different. With this, homeowners and planning authorities may not be aware of the innovative products available
that can compassionately upgrade period properties while maintaining their original, historical beauty. This makes it increasingly difficult for homeowners to be granted planning permission to upgrade their properties.
“Reviewing these barriers will mostly be positive for the fenestration industry, as UPVC windows offer a great thermal performance and u-values for any type of home, so owners of older homes will really reap the benefits.
“Plus, this will allow installers within the industry to add another sector to their business. However, not all installers are educated and experienced in fitting windows in heritage properties, so the review must be mindful that there could be a skills gap not just in the fenestration industry but across the board when upgrading period homes.
“As an industry, we must continue to encourage highquality installations happening

in these types of properties so as a sector we can support in preserving these homes while being a part of the solution to improve energy efficiency.”
The Residence Collection has earned widespread acceptance with local authorities in conservation areas and GradeII listed buildings across the UK, by being designed with Article 4 guidelines in mind. This acceptance allows for an easier planning and installation process, removing some of the significant hurdles to maintaining the historical character of these properties, says the company.
The R9 collection complies with Part L regulations achieving u-values as low as 1.2W/m²K with double glazing and as low as 0.74 W/m²K with triple glazing.

CDW Systems To Merge With Sister Company Clearway Windows & Doors
CDW Systems has announced that it is set to merge with its sister company, supplier and installer Clearway Doors & Windows.
Both businesses boast more than 30 years in the industry and in 2010 the Gloucesterbased CDW bought out the Cheltenham-based Clearway.
The merger will see Clearway become a division of CDW Systems, with Clearway continuing to be used for the supply and install side of the business, with all the trade
supply coming under CDW.
All installation work will continue to be carried out from the Cheltenham site, with all manufacturing and production moved from Cheltenham to Gloucester. All sales and processing will move from Gloucester to Cheltenham
while Gloucester will house a dedicated technical department.
The company is working towards getting everything in place by July 31 at the latest and managing director Jeremy Phillips said: “This is an exciting move for both our customers and both CDW and Clearway. At present we manufacture different products at different sites, so customers are having to source some from one and some from the other which can be confusing.
“What this gives our trade supply side of the business is a much more straight forward offering and a much clearer picture for customers as they’ll be able to buy all our product range from CDW.”

Edgetech’s Super Spacer Helps Twinseal Stay Ahead Of The Curve
For 22 years, Twinseal has been at the forefront of British IGU manufacturing – thanks to its longstanding commitment to embracing new products and technology, and the support of trusted supplier Edgetech, claims the company.
Two automated spacer application lines, combined with Edgetech’s Super Spacer, have helped the York-based firm streamline its operations.
“With Edgetech’s support, we’ve been able to improve productivity and ensure we’re
delivering the best possible IGUs to our customers,” comments production director Lee Cowen.
“People often think automation is about replacing humans with robots, but at Twinseal, that’s not been the case at all.
“Even the most automated production line in the world still needs staff to oversee the production, and that human element can’t be replaced.
“My team is an integral part of what we do here at Twinseal – it takes extremely skilled staff to
run our production line.”
Twinseal’s success can also be attributed to its ability to preemptively solve problems before they even occur. Lee likens Twinseal’s facility to “Noah’s ark” – they have two of each piece of machinery to ensure that, if something goes wrong or machinery breaks down, there is a backup plan already in place.
Lee continues: “Engineering expertise and rigorous maintenance schedules are a vital part of providing the highquality service we’re known for.’’
Edgetech head of sales Tony Palmer comments: “At Edgetech, we’ve always placed a special emphasis on embracing new technologies.
“We’re delighted that Twinseal has seen such success working with Super Spacer over the years, and are a fantastic example of what can be achieved by adopting automation.

Conservatory Outlet Boosts its Green Credentials
Conservatory Outlet has taken a further leap towards being fully waste-free.
The manufacturer of windows, doors and living space products has implemented several additional recycling programmes over the past twelve months.
As a result, the percentage of materials being disposed of and sent to landfill now stands in the single digits – a reduction of over 20%.
Central to this success has been Conservatory Outlet’s decision to engage with various recycling specialists to review its waste management processes and make a series of marginal gains across the business.
This has led to more recycling
points being installed at its 60,000 sq ft manufacturing facility in Wakefield which allows for a wider range of materials to be collected and recycled.
As the recycling scheme expands, the aim is to be fully waste-free by the end of 2024.
Also, the company has created a dedicated on-site waste management collection point for its customers to use. This allows members of the Conservatory Outlet Premium Retail Network to send waste UPVC and materials back to the company to recycle on their behalf.
Conservatory Outlet’s managing director, Mick Giscombe, said: “It’s fantastic to see how as a business we’ve been cutting down on waste and increasing
our recycling statistics year-onyear.
“As part of our ongoing commitment to a more sustainable future, we’re taking the lead and ensuring that there is no waste leftover from our manufacturing process.
“We’re talking about improving this scheme further and our team is looking at reducing that number to the point where we might even be recycling at a net gain in the near future.
“The focus on recycling is having positive benefits across the business, the environment and our customers.
“Many of our retailer partners talk about how green credentials are becoming more and more important to their customers, so being able to back up their work with our efforts as a sustainable and responsible manufacturer is only a positive thing.”

Sustainable Fenestration
The UK fenestration industry has a crucial role to play in promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. As buildings account for a significant portion of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, it is essential that the sector takes steps to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
AT Precision, a leading hardware supplier in the industry, is at the forefront of this effort, thanks in large part to the recent introduction of an in-house recycling scheme, an initiative that involves collecting unused or unwanted uPVC materials from customers and processing them for use in manufacturing their range of recycled thermal reinforcement (RTR) bars.
According to AT Precision, RTR bars, made from 100% recycled uPVC, offer both strength and increased thermal performance to windows – not only do they contribute to improving energy efficiency, but they also have an impressive minimum lifespan of
Furthermore, AT Precision says that using RTR bars involves a more simplified manufacturing process compared to those required for traditional steel reinforcement bars. They are quick and easy to install, saving valuable time and resources for fabricators while ensuring highquality results.
Extruded alongside the RTR bars is AT Precision’s new EcoLath range of roof laths and joists, also made from 100% recycled uPVC.
The range offers several advantages over traditional timber alternatives says the company – the roof laths and joists are more affordable, knotfree, resistant to rotting, warping, and bending – all qualities that make them ideal for any roofing project.
AT Precision’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond just offering eco-friendly products; the company says it also provides a cost-effective solution compared to competitors. By repurposing unused uPVC materials through their recycling scheme, they are able to reduce manufacturing costs and pass on savings to customers without compromising quality or performance.
35 years.
One of the key benefits of AT Precision’s RTR bars is their compatibility with all major profile systems, says the company. This means that regardless of the specific window system being used, customers can benefit from enhanced thermal performance and strength without compromising on design or functionality.
SalesdDirector Michael Hewitt comments: “In the face of pressing environmental challenges, we are dedicated as a company towards playing our role in preserving our planet. With our renewed commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, we can continue to add to our product portfolio while doing our part for sustainability. As the demand for sustainable building materials continues to grow, we have a commitment to setting an example by prioritising both quality and environmental responsibility within the fenestration industry.”

The Business Pilot Barometer
Slow start to 2024, but are things changing?
By Neil Cooper-Smith, Senior Analyst, Business Pilot
Average retail sales continued their upward trajectory in 2024 – up 5.1% to 62.1 in March – dispelling fears that 2024 is going to be a complete washout. Average sales for March were
also 28.3% higher than the same period last year, demonstrating that the industry is on a better footing than the start of 2023.
But there are caveats. While positive sales figures should be celebrated, we all keep one eye on leads, because they give an indication of what is to come, and at 118.4, average leads for March were 6% lower than February.
Again, this is still 11.9% higher than this time last year, but with average lead times extending to 17.8 days (up 11.25%) and average order values up 12.7% to £3,442, this could be because the volume market is slowing slightly, and higher value orders are taking up the slack.
Figures for March also took in most of the Easter weekend, so this higher average order figure could reflect homeowners’ first big purchasing decision of the year. It is also worth noting that many household finances received a boost going into the new financial year, with the energy price cap dropping £238 to £1,690 and the minimum wage rising by more than a £1/hour to £11.44/ hour.
Yes, other bills are rising (including council tax), but with the housing market still subdued (according to the latest figures from the Nationwide building society), and inflation down to 3.4%, many homeowners are investing in their homes, possibly with an eye on a buoyant housing market in the summer when the cost of
VIEWPOINT 46 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
borrowing is expected to fall.
But there is no hiding the fact that on a quarterby-quarter basis, 2024 got off to a slow start. Compared to Q4 2023, average sales in Q1 2024 were down 16% to 50.4, and average leads were down 24.6% to 96.6.
For retail companies going in the second quarter of 2024, it is about keeping their options open, and about having a sufficiently broad product range to meet the needs of homeowners when they come knocking. It is also about being prepared so they can meet those needs head on, rather than reacting slower than competitors.
Tools like Business Pilot are designed to help businesses plan efficiently. On a daily basis, company owners can see which product ranges are more popular, so marketing can be tailored accordingly; leads can be tracked and followed up quickly, so no opportunity is lost; and profit margins can be maintained, so jobs aren’t won that later cost the business money.
I was always told that there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. The same can be said for the success of a business – there is no such thing as a bad market, only inappropriate analysis.
It is no surprise that when asked what their favourite feature of Business Pilot is, most business owners say the full visibility it gives them.

Head In The Cloud?
Are you still hosting your design processing software on site?
Maybe it is time to move to the cloud and discover the benefits that brings, says Cyncly’s sales manager Greg Beachim. We report.
All fabricators that took the forward-thinking step of investing in Window Designer from Cyncly business First Degree Systems before 2020 would have had to host the application, and the database, on site.
This requires servers, space to store the servers, energy to power on-site hardware, trained personnel to manage those servers, and the responsibility to get that service up and running if there was an issue.
Today, however, Cyncly’s sales manager Greg Beachim highlights that customers have access to different hosting platforms that have the potential to meet their requirements at lower cost and greater management efficiency.
“Up until recently, maintaining your own servers was the only deal in town, whether you owned the software outright, or signed up to a subscription service,” he says. “If we look at our subscription models now and what they offer, they can either be on-premise, or they can be cloud-hosted, or we can do persite licencing.
“There are various other solutions we can offer for businesses to improve their services, but the key thing is that if you choose to move to a cloud platform, this can offer the solutions and benefits an on-premises version of Window Designer can offer.”
This method of hosting software, Greg says, jumped in popularity when Microsoft ceased support for Windows Server 2012 in October 2023. This move to sunset technical support for old software platforms is not uncommon, but it can potentially put the security of possibly hundreds of window fabricators at risk if they don’t upgrade their systems.
Fabricators could have faced investing in both new server hardware and operating system licencing, which can cost thousands if not tens of thousands of pounds.
“The other option was to move to a cloud-based solution such as Window Designer Cloud, which can offer you many more benefits,” Greg says,
“For a lot of businesses, this means that they can work 24/7 from almost any internet-enabled device and simply carry on working. Which means that if they’ve got multiple factories, or if they’ve got multiple staff working from multiple locations, the cloud may suit them for the application that they’re looking to use it for.”
Cyncly sees the ongoing trend as
VIEWPOINT 48 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
Greg Beachim
having a cloud-based application available as an option to all customers, which underlines the value that fabricators place on remote services.
“We offer various cloud services within our own suite of products, whether that be Zandi, Window Designer Cloud, or Cloud Retailer,” Greg says. “So, we’re meeting the needs of the market in relation to cloud-based platforms, and what they can offer the businesses in terms of features and benefits.”
For example, customers no longer have to invest in servers and their upkeep, they can benefit from upgrades to software as they go live, and they can add and remove modules as they see fit. All this saves them money and puts them in control of their software investment.
“As fabricators grow, they will often want to bring on board new software functions, which they weren’t prepared to pay for from day one because it was too big a leap forward for them,” Greg says.
The Window Designer subscription package was designed so that a fabricator can choose different tiers of functionality, without worrying about paying for unused functions. So, they may start out on a basic package that allows them to process window and door designs, including complex shapes.
Once that is in place, that fabricator may choose to upgrade their subscription package to include other cost and time-saving modules, such as Profile Optimiser and Stock Assistant, which help to reduce
waste, optimise pricing, and manage stock levels that keeps more cash in the business.
“When it comes to cloud hosting, many applications are accepted as commonplace as being cloud based,” Greg says. “Take Office 365 as an example. That’s accessible 24/7 simply on a browser. You can create a document on one device and continue editing it on another – simply by accessing the app via a browser.
“So, cloud-enabled apps are a key element of our product development as we move forward, and we expect to bring even more benefits to our customers via subscription models of ownership and cloud-based software hosting.”

Where Is The Future Homes Standard Taking Us?
By Nigel Headford – CAB CEO
The purpose of the Part L consultation in 2019 and 2020 was to gather feedback and opinions from stakeholders regarding the 2021 uplift to the Building Regulations for energy efficiency in domestic buildings in England. The document sought input on various aspects, including the U-values for glazed elements, seen as a first step towards the 2025 Future Homes Standard. The feedback informed the development of the regulations and helped shape the requirements for energy efficiency in domestic buildings, as set out in
the 2021 edition of Part L that took effect in 2022.
In the Impact Assessment for the 2019/2020 Future Homes Standard consultation, ‘Part L 2020 – Option 1’, at the time gave a window U-value for a ‘notional’ dwelling of 0.8 W/m2K (g value = 0.57). This typically requires triple glazing and was seen as indicative of the proposed requirements for 2025.
All this has now changed. The current consultation for the Future Homes Standard in 2025 proposes that proof is given that every
window and glazed door meets the current minimum U-value standard of 1.6 W/m²K in a new home. Currently in AD L1, as one option to demonstrate compliance, the U-value of a window can be calculated using a standard window (1.23 m x 1.48 m, with size tolerances, as per EN 143511). This effectively means that the U-value for only one window with a certain size and configuration needs to be calculated, allowing other windows in the range to be compliant. However, from 2025 the U-value of each window will need to meet the U-value standard.
IT and tech companies in the fenestration sector will benefit from the increased demand for software to calculate U-values. The enforcement of the new compliance method is uncertain, as there has been a lack of policing in the past. There are concerns about the manipulation of configurable software and the reporting of accurate U-values. It is unclear if the final rules will be strict enough or if there will be last-minute lobbying to dilute the laws. It is proposed by government that the use of area-weighted average U-values are to be allowed for windows and doors, and it is assumed that the limiting values apply to the area-weighted values and not to individual windows or doors.
There is also a question of whether the industry will be ready by June 2025, as it takes time and testing to update products. It is possible that the Government may grant a grace period for suppliers to update their product ranges, but this will depend on the political landscape. Overall, the focus on proving compliance to U-value standards has raised many questions and uncertainties in the industry.
CAB’s draft paper of November 2024 outlined the position of the Association’s Membership regarding the likely next round of consultations for aluminium fenestration systems in domestic
VIEWPOINT 50 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
buildings, including the Future Homes Standard consultation for new homes, based on the 2019/2020 Impact Assessment options, although CAB’s paper was not published given the changes that transpired, as discussed earlier. According to the 2021 summary of consultation responses, 80% of respondents to the Future Homes Standard consultation thought that a home built to the Future Homes Standard, compared with the 2013 requirements, should have more than 75-80% reduction in operational CO2 emissions. The Future Homes Standard consultation responses in 2021 were dominated by architects and designers, at about 50% of the total, with participation by manufacturers/installers being almost ten times lower at about 5%, CAB have encouraged all members of the Association to respond to the latest consultation, the deadline of which has now been extended to 27th March.
There has been a drive in the construction industry to build low-carbon properties, both for dwellings and commercial buildings anticipating the 2050 deadline for carbon neutrality in the UK. The Scottish Government is planning legislation in 2024 to ensure that all new homes built in the coming years are to a Passivhaus standard, or a Scottish thermal efficiency equivalent. LETI (a Community Interest Company, ‘Low Energy Transformation Initiative’) states that building to a Passivhaus standard increases costs for new build by only 5% to 10% over current regulation construction, which should prove affordable as energy savings over time should cover the increased investment.
Currently our homes range from 90 to 170 kWh/m2/yr in operational energy usage. By 2050 our homes should be using between 40 to 60 kWh/m2/yr in operational energy usage to meet the net zero target, depending on the decarbonisation
of the electricity grid. We will achieve this by taking a whole building approach to increase insulation whilst reducing air permeability and cold bridging. Obviously, we will need to stop using fossil fuels such as gas for heating as soon as practicable and move to heat pumps as the most accessible technology at the moment. Currently over 85% of homes in the UK have gas boilers. A gradual phase out of gas boilers and an increase in heat pump installations will require an increase in the electricity grid, which is also being decarbonised with the use of more renewable energy.
To achieve the net zero target, our higher insulation homes will require less energy to run and the net zero balance can be struck.
But there are implications of using more insulating materials in windows and doors such as:
Using more insulating materials inside the frames of windows and doors can make recycling more complex. This is because there are more materials to separate and sort at the end of their life. It is important to consider the recyclability and reuse potential of these materials to ensure a circular economy approach.
The use of more insulating materials in the frames of windows and doors can have implications for their performance in a fire. There may be an increased use of combustible materials, which could affect the fire resistance of the windows and doors.
More insulating materials and additional glass, such as moving from double-glazing to tripleglazing, can make the windows and doors heavier. This can lead to increased operating forces, making them more difficult to open and close. This can have implications for accessibility and usability concerns.
While lower U-values are possible
with more insulating materials, the benefits in terms of reducing operational emissions may be minimal, particularly as the electricity grid decarbonises. The reduction in window U-values from 1.0 to, for example, 0.84 W/m2K may not significantly contribute to reducing operational emissions. This needs to be weighed against the other issues mentioned above, including increased embodied carbon.
It is important to strike a balance between achieving lower U-values for better operational energy efficiency and considering the practical implications and trade-offs associated with using more insulating materials in windows and doors.
Aluminium framed glazed door and window systems at the current minimum U-value standard of 1.4 W/m²K for existing homes and 1.6 W/ m²K for new homes could be maintained as a short-term minimum standard, but will this be sufficient for our low-carbon future? There is already a strong Passivhaus movement in the UK and as this gathers pace together with ever increasing costs of energy, it is likely that these higher performance homes will be in demand from homeowners.
Clearly aluminium framed fenestration will continue its drive into the residential new-build and home improvement markets in the coming years. To have your voice heard you should be part of the conversation and there has never been a better time to join CAB.
Should you wish to learn more about the use of aluminium in construction, please contact CAB directly, or why not consider joining the Association and be recognised as being involved in supporting your industry and helping to shape its future. Short-Term Gains, Long-Term Pain: Avoiding A Race To The Bottom In Windows
By Alex Page, Director of Stedek, who
argues that undermining premium brands hurts everyone in the long run.
In today’s window industry, we’re lucky enough to have a vast range of quality, stylish products to choose from.
It’s a level of choice that my dad could’ve only dreamed of
when he started Stedek thirty years ago – a time when you could have a product in any colour you liked, as long as it was white.
We’re extremely lucky that systems companies have invested millions in achieving higher quality, better performance and more stylish aesthetics.
Some of that investment has gone into the actual process of product designing and manufacture. Some of it has gone into creating premium brands that homeowners want to buy.
And everyone in the sector has benefitted. It’s created lucrative opportunities to sell premium products that have helped thousands of businesses thrive and grow.
That’s why it’s hugely important we don’t take any of this for granted, or undermine everything these suppliers have worked so hard to achieve.
During the pandemic, home improvement was in the very lucky position to be in one of the few sectors where business boomed.
Last year, for the first time since the arrival of covid, demand significantly slowed. It meant 2023 was a harder year than the sector has experienced in a while.
With the government announcing we’re officially now in recession, it’s likely 2024 will be just as challenging, if not more so.
In tougher times, there will always be a temptation to race to the bottom on price. Those that choose that strategy may even find it benefits them in the short-term.
However, that approach harms everyone in the long run. When manufacturers start selling premium products at rock bottom prices, it risks destroying those brands, and companies’ ability to benefit from them.
I hope fabricators throughout the industry remember that in the months ahead.

Trade To Drive Next Period Of Growth
– Dempsey Dyer Celebrates 40 Years with Deceuninck
Dempsey Dyer has been a Deceuninck customer for 40 years this year. Managing director Peter Dyer discusses why the relationship has lasted so well, and how it is blazing new ground.
When Dempsey Dyer moved to Deceuninck as supplier 40 years ago, managing director Peter Dyer explained that the decision was almost solely based on the fact that both companies shared Benelux heritage.
“That was about the breadth and depth of that decision-making process,” Peter says. “But it does mean that since 1984 – 40 years – we have worked with Deceuninck over many different iterations of their products.
“Today, we’re fabricating the 2500 series, the 2800 series, and the Slider 24 Patio. And we’re also looking at their Elegant range, which is a European system designed to tackle some
of the onerous Part L changes that we’re all looking forward to in 2025.”

PVC-U windows and has just relaunched its aluminium division.
“We’ve invested heavily in both the service side of the business and product development,” Peter says, “because we want to establish ourselves up as a company who can make it easy to buy, easy for our customers to buy from, and provide tools to help you sell.
“One particularly fantastic selling point for our customers is the 30-plus colourways from stock, thanks to Deceuninck, which look great on our heritage windows – especially our unique mechanically jointed Beaumont window – as well as our stormproof casement, and the Deceuninck flush casement.
“We complement this with our DoorCo range of composite doors, our new aluminium bi-
folds, and our timber range.
“That range and diversity allows our customers to pick up on different parts of the market and knowing they can go into any meeting, any appointment, and knowing that they’ll have a product from Dempsey Dyer that will satisfy that customer’s need.”
While Peter argues that it is focusing on satisfying the trade requirements in 2024, Dempsey Dyer’s commercial division has steadily grown since it began operating in the 1990s.
It started life working directly for social housing providers in the local area, before targeting the big contracts in London and the southeast with Deceuninck’s support.
“Just as we were coming out of the financial crash, we started to look at the Deceuninck range and look for opportunities that that created,” Peter says. “We discovered that with the Deceuninck design support, we could offer unique Deceuninck products to target aluminium specified projects and offer to the commercial side of those contractors a potential saving of up to 30%.
“So that’s how we started, and we built a lot of business off the back of student accommodation, working with some of the bluechip organisations down in London and the southeast, and that led to us having an operation that’s based down there.”
Dempsey Dyer has seven employees who operate solely in and around London on both the site supervision and the engineering side to make sure that we manage all contractual obligations that commercial contracts demand.
“But the key to all that success is making sure that we offer a product that is fit for purpose,”
Peter says. “So we won’t go out to marketplace and speculate whether our solution will work on a project. We will make sure it works before we bother anybody with a tender or anything else.”
Underpinning that sentiment is Deceuninck’s new Elegant range.
Elegant is the next generation window from Deceuninck, and can achieve U-values as low as 0.8W/m2K. Elegant also delivers on aesthetics with contemporary minimalist features, which replicate aluminium in an advanced, low maintenance and energy efficient, composite system. It can also be combined with Decoroc, Deceuninck’s next generation finish, so fitted alongside aluminium products as part of dual-specification installations.
The system is built around a single ultra-energy-efficient modular frame which is available as a standard 76mm system. These can be combined with any of five different sash options.
“Elegant allows us to maintain large glazing areas, maintain the desire for architects to have a lot of glass and less frame, really push the boundaries of what PVC-U is doing, and hit those lower U-values,” Peter says.
But it is the trade division will take Dempsey Dyer to the next stage in its growth stage, Peter asserts.
“Commercial work moves along steadily in the background,” he says. “But it is the trade market where we will see the most opportunity for growth opportunities.
“Given the slow start to 2024, we believe our trade customers will pick up the slack and take us from £11 million to £15 million in three years’ time.”

Qualifications And Training – Choosing A Trusted Partner
Employers in the fenestration industry who wish to hone the skills of their workforce in order to improve their business’s competitiveness face two challenges: carefully managing training budgets whilst also addressing staff time constraints. How to choose a partner organisation who can help them achieve their goal at the same time as ensuring these challenges are met need not be difficult. Dan Brown, strategic relationship manager of GQA Qualifications explains.
Currently, there is a significant amount of work focused on
establishing competency, with individuals often overlooking the expertise of an Awarding Body in this regard. In addition, I talk to many people in the fenestration industry who are well aware that plenty of training opportunities exist. However, they do not have the time to audit all the options available, and they certainly do not have big budgets to spend in this area. What they really need is assistance from a qualificationswriting and awarding partner that can also point them in the direction of accredited training that is delivered by an independently and rigorously audited provider. All within
the confines of limited budget availability.
I would recommend seeking out a partner that is a specialist in learning in the sector. A good indicator of this is the number of steering groups on which the partner sits, helping to shape the future qualifications being developed. In addition, working with a not-for-profit organisation assists with keeping spending down.
The chosen partner should have the ability not only to write industry-specific qualifications and facilitate accredited training, but to draw up bespoke qualifications for individual organisations. Employers can thereby create and accredit in house developed training courses and learning programmes in addition to going after existing qualifications.
GQA facilitates an Accredited Training service, offered through a nationwide network of approved training centres. It is aimed at employers in the industry who want to have their in-house training endorsed by GQA Qualifications and gives them the opportunity to deliver training that focuses on candidates’ particular needs specific to their role with the employer.
In essence, accredited training involves:
1. Assessing courses for learning outcomes.
2. Ensuring the existence of an appeals procedure.
3. Maintaining a non-bias approach to assessment.
4. Implementing ‘reasonable adjustment’ for individuals with learning difficulties.
5. Introducing an end assessment to test learners’ comprehension of course content, aligning with the

BUSINESS
Valuable To The Core
Before Signature Home Improvements in Chichester chose the Business Pilot CRM software to manage its customer relationships, it used spreadsheets and shared folders. Director Rakeem Porter-Young explains the upgrade.
We are a relatively new business, only going since 2019, and we quickly grew out of those early methods of running a business, such as spreadsheets. They were very elaborate spreadsheets, but spreadsheets nonetheless.
Actually, we had an early opportunity to move over to Business Pilot, because
we already knew business development manager Matthew Gaskin who came to see us in the early days. But we were initially put off by the cost.
And then we got busier and busier, to the point where we were being over-run by spreadsheets and scraps of paper.
So, we did our research and looked into what CRM systems are on the market. We very quickly realised that what was available was either too heavily sales focused, or too operationally focused. When we saw the first demo of Business Pilot, we were sold pretty much immediately
because it was clear that it had been designed by people from within the industry.
Yes, there is a cost, but it is a monthly subscription, and it is being updated all the time. I can’t imagine life without it now – the value it brings to our business is really high. To put it into context, I would have to employ at least one person to manage the tasks that Business Pilot handles for us. So, from that point of view, it is great value for money.
Business Pilot has lots of features, but my favourite is what it offers at its core, which is the contact/ lead/contract system. This allows anyone with access to Business Pilot to pick up any of the phones, take a call from a customer, and within like a few taps be up to speed on what’s going on with that customer.
Before Business Pilot, if someone rang up, and the person answering didn’t have the information at their fingertips, then we’d have to call them back. This just slows the whole window installation process down.
What could be a very simple question could easily turn into several internal emails and calls, before calling the customer back. Now, that phone call is answered and dealt with immediately.
So, that’s not a feature, it is just what the software does, and it saves us money, and it maintains our good reputation.
Another overlooked feature-that’snot-really-a-feature is the support during set up. I imagine some companies are going to be put off from investing in a CRM system because they are worried about the impact of installation, and how it may upset the apple cart. Well, with Business Pilot, the set up and initial training went very smoothly. Everything was done when they said it was going to be done.
VIEWPOINT 58 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
There was no downtime, not much of a learning curve, and we had someone on the end of the line if we had any questions. The training was so good from Rebecca Taylor that I’ve since been training new recruits how to use the software.
If anyone is currently on the fence, I would say ‘make the jump’, and
this is coming from someone who didn’t immediately invest in Business Pilot when I had the chance.
We’re over the moon with Business Pilot, and I can’t imagine how we would survive without it. In fact, I don’t think we could have grown to the size we are, in this space of time, with the
Building Success With A Happy Workforce, Says Premier Arches
In today’s competitive landscape, employee retention is a critical differentiator for businesses in the fabrication industry. High turnover rates disrupt production schedules and can negatively impact customer service. Arched frame specialist Premier Arches has defied the trend by fostering a unique family-oriented environment that prioritises its workforce. According to directors Sean Greenall, Tom Greenall, Dan Maloney, and Joe Trueman…
Since opening our doors in 2015, we’ve seen significant growth, having expanded our premises, increased our arched frame offerings, and made significant business investments.
But what we believe really sets us apart from other companies is our commitment to creating a family-style working culture, and placing an emphasis on fostering strong relationships among our employees to create an environment where they enjoy coming to work every day.
And the results speak for themselves – in 2023, we had
zero leavers of choice, boasting a staggeringly low annual labour turnover rate of just 6%.
This commitment to our workforce is even more impressive considering the company’s significant growth, with a recent recruitment drive expanding our team to 40 strong.
Notably, over 20% of our staff have been with us for more than five years, a statistic we value more than any sales record.
Selling and manufacturing arched and angled frames is a complex job carried out by skilled craftsmen, so our people are our biggest asset. We work hard to protect, support, develop and engage them, not because it drives performance, but because it’s the right thing to do.
This dedication to employee wellbeing extends beyond company culture – for example, we recently made a significant investment in new machinery, boosting production capacity. This expansion has paved the way for further growth, ensuring that new recruits become an

integral part of the Premier Arches family.
When people join us, they enjoy their working day, they care about what they do, and they stick around.
While many businesses focus solely on sales figures and growth rates, we prove that investing in a valued and dedicated workforce can lead not only to increased customer satisfaction, but also to long-term success.
By prioritising our employees and creating a family-style culture, we have built a strong foundation for continued growth and prosperity within the industry.
As all levels of the industry continue to seek ways to differentiate themselves from competitors, perhaps it’s time they take note of our approach. After all, happy employees often result in satisfied customers –something every business strives for.
Finally, in recognition of our team’s unwavering dedication, we would like to express our sincere gratitude. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the talent, commitment, and loyalty of our exceptional staff. Their expertise, collaborative spirit, and passion for quality are the driving forces behind our success, and we are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated team as part of the Premier Arches family. www.premierarches.co.uk

Fenestration Considerations for Healthcare
By Wojciech Brożyna – MD Aluprof UK
The key consideration for any hospital or healthcare facility is the well-being of patients, this can be evaluated as offering patient safety and providing a healthy environment to aid recovery. Whilst building fabric plays its part, fenestration, in the form of windows doors and curtain walls, offer an immediate link to the outside which can provide both a patient benefit and carry associated risks.
Murat Uyanmis, who served as project director at TP Bennet for over eight years and was involved in retrofitting the NHS Trust’s building at 18 Mole Park in Surrey which features Aluprof system comments: “This short editorial covers the majority of the design intent when considering the development of healthcare projects. The review is especially important when specifying the performances of various suppliers and manufacturers when clients offer alternatives to original specifications.”
The Department for Health has produced ‘Health Building Note 00-10, Part D: Windows and associated hardware give best practice’ offers guidance on the design and planning of new healthcare buildings and the refurbishment or extension of existing facilities. The main safety risk associated with opening windows is potential falls.
The recommendation for preventing falls from windows in healthcare premises is to assess the risks of patients falling from windows and implement
control measures. This includes conducting a risk assessment that takes into account the patient category and physical capability, not only for new builds and refurbishments, but also for all existing stock. If risks from falling are identified, control measures should be put in place, which usually involves the use of windows with restrictors and where necessary, safety glazing. It is also important to specify the correct type of restrictor at the procurement stage and ensure that the restrictors and their fittings are robust enough to prevent vulnerable and determined adults from forcing them open beyond the 100 mm restriction. Additionally, window restrictors should be included in planned preventative maintenance and monitoring schedules with any damaged or defective restrictors being repaired or replaced.
Many older healthcare buildings do not comply with current regulations regarding thermal efficiency. By replacing and upgrading windows to thermallyefficient systems, existing buildings can reduce heat loss and lower energy costs. Aluminium window systems with high-performance thermal breaks are a wise investment as they are easy to maintain, have exceptionally low U-values and require minimum maintenance throughout their extensive lifespan. The lower the U value the higher the thermal efficiency of the system.
Natural daylight has a positive impact on wellbeing, so it is important to provide uninterrupted views of the outside for healthcare patients. Aluminium windows allow for larger expanses of glazing in slimmer frames, maximising daylighting. Additionally, the use of aluminium curtain walling and fixed light windows

can create more welcoming entrance areas and reduce reliance on artificial light.
Not withstanding Health Building Note 00-10, replacement windows should feature easy-to-use opening mechanisms or trickle vents to ensure wellventilated spaces. Substantial window restrictors are a given standard, but more recent innovations, such as parallel push style windows, can provide controlled ventilation and airflow while negating the risk of falls.
Murat Uyanmis adds, “Whilst high thermal efficiency windows come in a range of options, heat can also escape through doors, so it is important to choose door systems that achieve low U-values to minimise energy loss. Automatic opening doors, such as sliding doors, are ideal for hospital environments as they save space, can be made to larger sizes than standard doors and reduce touch points. Swing doors are also popular for quick access, but they should be robustly constructed to withstand the demands of a busy hospital environment and where necessary be fitted with 90º hold open devices where required. Certainly, all entrances are required to be DDA compliant for ease of access.”
Glazed doors can also aid navigation and boost daylighting in main entrances and communal public areas. While they may not be suitable for areas requiring privacy, they can make a significant difference in enhancing the overall environment. Aluminium framed commercial doors are suitable for interior spaces as they are non-corrosive and can withstand rigorous cleaning procedures without compromising their finish. Aluminium screens and doors can offer high levels of fire resistance and are a perfect option to compartmentalise and offer safe escape routes in case of fire.
There are proven benefits of naturally ventilated wards in hospitals, these include reduced crosscontamination. Opening windows inwards allows for the circulation of fresh air, which helps to dilute and remove airborne pathogens. This can significantly reduce the risk of cross-contamination between patients. Pressurised ventilation systems, if not properly maintained or designed, can contribute to the spread of infectious diseases. By relying on natural ventilation through openable windows, healthcare facilities can avoid potential issues associated with faulty mechanical systems, inaccessible ducts, and poor maintenance.
In summary, the benefits of modern fenestration can be retrofitted into existing healthcare buildings through early engagement with manufacturers, upgrading windows to low U-value systems, maximising natural daylight, ensuring well-ventilated spaces, choosing doors with low U-values, and using glazed doors for navigation and daylighting. aluprof.co.uk

You Can’t Put A Price On Safety
Dave Broxton, Bohle’s managing director, discusses how price isn’t everything when it comes to ensuring that your staff are safe at work.
In the construction industry in 2022/23, there were 53,000 nonfatal injuries at work (Health & Safety Executive), highlighting critical health and safety issues.
Whilst it is impossible to know the root causes of each individual
case, according to Dave Broxton –Bohle managing director – the only way to ensure that your business does not become a statistic is to provide your staff with the best, and safest, equipment possible to do their jobs.
“We’re working with a very dangerous material in glass and glazing”, Dave says. “Often at height and always with hazards. Most people think it’s the risk of cutting that is the key danger
factor, but in many cases, it can actually be the weight of a falling glass pane that causes injury.
VIEWPOINT 62 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
Dave Broxton
“For instance, if you take a relatively small piece of glass destined for a balustrade: let’s say it’s 21.5mm toughened laminated, 2m x 1.1m. That piece of glass alone would weigh around 120Kg –more than enough to cause crush injuries, or sever fingers and toes. Add height to the risk assessment and fatality becomes a potential outcome.
“We’re also seeing a trend for oversized, large glass panes, where you have double or triple glazed units that are extremely heavy. Whilst they look amazing when installed, the installation process itself can often pose a headache for the team installing it, due to the safety elements. The same applies to sashes with bonded glass components.
“First and foremost, it is an issue of health and safety,” Dave explains. “Given that they are increasingly handling larger, heavier units, installers and installation companies should have total confidence that the equipment they are using is up to the job.
“So, our message to customers is to always be safe, and be sure. There are lots of cheaper alternatives on the market, and whilst you may spend less on the initial purchase, is it worth risking the health and safety of your employees with a product that isn’t tested and accredited? With Veribor, they can be 100% assured that it is fit for purpose.
Long-time Bohle customer, Luke Browes, managing director of Stowmarket Glass comments, “When it comes to lifting equipment, we use Bohle for whatever we can get. For example, we buy the Veribor suction lifters on a regular basis, which we sell in the shop. And they’re just something that’s on the van day in, day out, because they are so useful. We couldn’t do installations without them!”.

Striving Towards Sustainability
By: Ned Kenjic, operations director at Yale DWS, discusses Assa Abloy and Yale’s ongoing sustainability efforts.
The Yale brand has a history of innovation going back hundreds of years. However, we also have a strong sense of responsibility to the environment we operate in – and that means maintaining a UK manufacturing base that not only produces highquality products, but helps to shape a responsible future for generations to come.
As part of the Assa Abloy Group, sustainability is integrated into everything we do. The Group has a long-term, science-based commitment to a sustainable future, with targets such as halving our scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero no later than 2050.
Last year, our efforts led to some great results. These included decreasing our water intensity by 18%, our energy intensity by 12% and our carbon footprint by 4% – all significant strides in mitigating our environmental impact as a company.
We also carried out 765 sustainability audits of direct material suppliers and achieved 246 verified and published Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). A
complete mapping of a product’s environmental footprint based on a detailed Lifecycle Assessment (LCA), an EPD allows customers to make an informed decision when selecting a solution.
Another important Assa Abloy target is to remove all singleuse plastic from our business by the end of this year, helping to mitigate pollution, protect wildlife and preserve the health of ecosystems for generations to come.
At Yale, we’re playing our part in this by recycling the in-house polypropylene materials at our Centre of Excellence for Door Products in Willenhall, which equate to around 30% of our material consumption.
The factory currently has eight plastic injection moulding machines, which are used to produce useful components such as profile packers, onepiece keep end caps and dust tidies. Thanks to investments in new machinery, we are now able to separate the sprues from the components, granulate the sprues and reuse them in the plastic moulding process. This drastically reduces our dependence on virgin plastic materials, resulting in 27,000kg less plastic waste per annum.
Additionally, the reuse of granulated sprues in the plastic moulding process lowers our need to purchase new plastic material. This again helps the environment as it will discourage the manufacturing of plastic in the first place. https://bit.ly/3xpdyhZ

Jade Engineering Appoints Gareth Davies As Managing Director
Jade Engineering has appointed Gareth Davies as Managing Director in a move designed to lead the Coventry firm into its next phase and achieve longheld growth ambitions for the company.
As the industry’s leading manufacturer of tooling for PVC-U and aluminium frame production, a popular range of single-purpose machines that populate the factories of framemakers throughout the UK and Ireland, and a burgeoning division offering production consultancy and design solutions, the firm’s owners Sean Mackey and Adam Jones believe that additional expertise is required to take Jade
to the next level.
Says Sean: “We recognise that the expertise that has allowed our growth and success to this point needs to be supplemented with the skills and expertise that others can provide more effectively if we want to grow. We can then focus on what has made us successful and extend this for our existing and future clients.”
Gareth is said to provide the skills and expertise that Jade is looking for in full. With nearly 35 years’ experience as a business leader, in senior management roles across a diverse range of financial services, IT, engineering, consulting, and outsourced
services businesses, Gareth is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (FCIPD).
One of the key tenets of Gareth’s appointment is his lack of connection with the window and door industry: Sean and Adam are insistent that the skill sets required by Jade would not be found within the core industry that they serve. Immediate business priorities are to manage the move into the company’s new 30,000 feet2 headquarters building acquired 18 months ago and to professionalise the business at every level, to deliver their longer-term vision and drive growth.
A keen Leicester City fan and season ticket holder, Gareth is married with 2 grown up children. Whatever spare time he has beyond his work and family is spent watching sports (mostly football, rugby and cricket) or listening to music.

Mila has just added a new enhanced security, twin cam espag locking system to its range of Advance products, developed specifically for aluminium window systems.
Like the rest of the Advance range, this new espag has been designed to solve the problems that aluminium fabricators are said to frequently encounter with existing mechanical hardware solutions – hence it comes with a C-track design, stronger gearbox, concealed gears and a more premium aesthetic.
Mila says the C-track design of the Advance espag means there is none of the risk associated with U-track espags of the track gradually collapsing against the profile and, over time, interfering
with the smooth operation of the window.
The 6mm wide gearbox has been developed with transmission gears which ensure a smooth, nonnotchy action and successfully strength tested to perform beyond the 40 Nm force where Mila maintains that most other C-track aluminium espag gearboxes tend to fail. The gears themselves are concealed beneath the faceplate to protect them from damaging dust and debris.
In terms of the aesthetic, the whole espag is in high quality 304 grade stainless steel with a premium matt, corrosion resistance finish, and there are integral nylon end caps which don’t just provide additional support around the end fixing point, but also provide
a more premium finish with no exposed edge visible.
Richard Gyde, Mila’s managing director explained: “The rationale behind Advance is to bring real design ingenuity into the aluminium hardware sector and underpin that with Mila’s proven commitment to quality and performance durability. We’ve already done that very successfully with our Advance bifold door magnets and now we’re set to do the same again with the Advance espag.”
The Advance espag is PAS24: 2022 and SBD accredited and stamped, so ticks all the boxes that fabricators need in terms of guaranteed security, and also incorporates clever design details which make it easy to fit – and forget.
For instance, the length is displayed on the faceplate, and both the backset size and the handling indicator are visible on the gearbox when it is in the open position to save valuable time in the factory during fitting. The twin stainless steel anti-jemmy mushroom cams (available in 5.5mm and 7mm heights) are also compression adjustable (+/-1mm).
The Advance espag has been tested to 50,000 cycles for operational reliability and comes with a comprehensive 10 year guarantee on mechanical operation.

The ‘Future-Proof’ Lock with a £5,000 Promise
In the fast-paced world of home security, where new threats emerge as quickly as the latest gadgets, Ultion recognises that burglars are always finding new tricks. Ultion is constantly evolving to ensure its locks are ready for dangers we haven’t even thought of yet.
Ultion says it came to life during what you could call a security pandemic, a time when most door locks were so weak, they could be broken into in under nine seconds. Right from the start, Ultion made breaking in much harder and riskier, and not just by a little. By ramping up how tough and timeconsuming it was to get past a
door, and making sure burglars would likely get caught, Ultion says it didn’t just cut down on breakins; it pretty much stopped them in their tracks.
Nick Dutton, CEO at Ultion said: “True safety isn’t just about stopping the problems we already know about, but also getting ready for the ones the bad guys haven’t even thought of yet. This idea is what drives all the hard work and testing we put into our locks. We’re always looking ahead, making sure our locks are not just strong now, but ready for whatever challenges might come up next.”

Additionally, each handle is supplied with spindle and screw packs as standard, to suit PVC-U, composite and timber doors delivering a one handle solution, regardless of the application.
Manufactured to conform to BS EN 1906 standards and cycle tested to 50,000 cycles, the Dynamic Door Handle is engineered for durability. Additionally, Dynamic Hardware offers a 10-year mechanical guarantee and a 20-year surface finish guarantee on 304 stainless steel base metal handles.

This improved guarantee is not just a testament to confidence in the current capabilities of Ultion locks but signifies the brand’s commitment to evolve its products in anticipation of forthcoming security challenges. Ultion is dedicated not to reacting to threats but to preempting them, ensuring readiness for the next generation of burglary techniques, says the company.

UAP Expands Slim Pull Handle Range
UAP is bolstering its range of slim pull handles with new colour options for residential and commercial properties.
The first to launch is the Black Pull Handle. Made from marinegrade stainless steel and finished with a black powder coating, the handle provides a contemporary appearance and exceptional durability. A further two handles are currently in development offering the same qualities with either a granite or rose gold finish.
To enhance aesthetics, all slim handles in the range feature 32mm diameter bars, are available with matching accessories, and can be paired with complementary hardware, including the Fullex Flexi Lock.
Each pull handle has two fixing points with an individual plate on
each and comes with an Allen key and two Allen bolts on the upstands. To maximise flexibility, three methods can be used for installation – hidden fixings, bolt through and back to back. For customers, these options also mean the door can be sent to site without the pull handle, preventing the risk of any damage in transit.
Kamila Kasperowicz, marketing director at UAP said: “These products have been designed to meet the demand for more modern hardware with sleeker handles and a choice of contemporary, stylish colours. The use of 316 grade stainless steel combined with the quality of the coating will prevent any rusting or water damage, ensuring minimal maintenance.
“The different fixing methods are another key benefit providing further options for end users,
which can enhance the overall appearance of the handle as well as durability. The bolt through and hidden fixings can result in a neater finish while the back-to-back method can reduce fitting times to just seconds while offering a very strong fixing.”

Hurst Asks: Can You Confidently Supply Doors In ANY Colour?
Colour is a key feature when selling doors, according to a recent survey conducted by Hurst. We talk to sales director Mark Atkinson about how this affects the company’s operations and marketing support.
Colour has become a key battleground for the supply and installation of entrance doors, according to a customer survey conducted by Hurst at the start of 2024.
Four in five of Hurst customers told the door supplier that they had seen an increase in demand from homeowners and door specifiers for bespoke colours.
The same survey also found that the most important factor when selling an entrance door is its appearance and overall design.
“We’ve seen the demand for a wide colour choice increase for many years now – for well over a decade,” Hurst’s sales director Mark Atkinson says. “But what has changed recently is the increased demand for bespoke colours.
“This really affects the dynamic from a sales point of view. Up until now, the industry has been geared towards providing a wide colour choice, not necessarily any colour choice. So, from an operational
Hurst sales director, Mark Atkinson
point of view we are moving away from the ability to simply stock and supply entrance doors in a variety of colours, to responding quickly to each individual colour order.”
The appearance of a door is currently seen as the most important factor when selling a door. When customers were asked to rank the key features, they responded:
PRODUCT NEWS 74 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
• Appearance/design (62%)
• Price (17%)
• Security (9%)
• Energy efficiency (8%)
• Sustainability (3%)
“In fact, 94% of our respondents put the door’s appearance in their top three factors when selling entrance doors,” Mark says. “And the fact that only 17% of respondents only cite price as the key selling point suggests that homeowners are willing to pay for that choice.”
To meet the increased homeowner demand for bespoke colours, Hurst opened a new state-of-theart paint shop at its site in Hull in February 2024.
This new £200,000 facility will also give the leading door
supplier greater control over the manufacturing process, while minimising error and reducing lead times in the process.
“This is an exciting development for us,” Sales Director Mark Atkinson says. “Our new paint shop will give us greater control over product development, including new colours, that will allow homeowners to make bold statements with their entrance doors.
Hurst’s increased colour capability dovetails neatly with its investment in its marketing support, including its new augmented reality (AR) sales tool, which fully integrates with a new composite door brochure and professionally created sales videos.
The door styles featured in the new Hurst AR Composite Sales Tool include options drawn from across its Classic, Cottage, and Contemporary Collections. And Hurst’s new aluminium-inspired Designer composite collection taps into the demand for the aluminium aesthetic but without the heavy price tag.
“The spike in demand for bespoke colours probably comes from a new generation of home buyers,” Mark says. “They aren’t tied to old ideas, and are receptive to new ways of engaging with home
improvement.
“Significantly, many people are now researching products and engaging with online tools and channels, either before speaking to an installer or during the buying process, and this has helped shape our marketing support package,” Mark says.
The new AR sales tool allows homeowners to superimpose a selection of Hurst’s most popular composite door styles against their property using their mobile phone or tablet.
Opened in their browser, homeowners can choose from the 12 popular composite door styles, which are featured in lifestyle images throughout the new brochure, viewing them as a fully rotatable and zoomable 360° 3D rendered image which they can view in their space in realtime and also walk up to, to see the detail of the grain and glass. They can then superimpose the door against their property on the screen of their device.
“We are pioneering new ideas all the time,” Mark concludes. “And our investment in modern marketing tools, together with our new paint shop, will allow us to lead the way with brand new products and services for our customers.”

Jack Aluminium Systems Introduces Pivot Door To ID30 Internal Glazing System Range
Jack Aluminium Systems has introduced a pivot door to its ID30 range of internal glazing systems.
Available as both a single and double pivot door, the new addition to the range offers the same high specification as its hinged and sliding door options, with the same sleek and streamlined finish – perfectly aligned with contemporary interiors, says the company.
Rotating on a vertical axis, the pivot door can be swung both inwards and outwards offering flexibility. The pivot doors also do not require a frame, unlike alternative door types, due to the weight being supported by the pivot.
Apeer Adds A Touch Of ‘Magic’ With New Upgrade
In a recent Ideal Home article, it was reported that #wreathmaking has received 29.7 million views on Tik Tok alone, giving some indication of the level of desire to decorate our front doors. Apeer has responded to this escalating trend with the magic wreath holder – an invisible built in magnet, that along with a wreath kit, holds wreaths securely in place.
Apeer’s managing director, Asa McGillian explains why the company decided to offer this upgrade: “Hanging wreaths on our front doors used to be something some of us did once a year at Christmas, but the
market has shifted significantly. We are increasingly seeing wreaths on doors all year round, and even the traditional Christmas wreaths are expected to see an uplift in demand for the next few years.
“The built in magnets we have added to some of our doors are completely invisible because they are set within the core of the door. We have added two magnets to ensure that even the larger wreaths are secure, and the magnets and rubber dots included in every wreath kit make sure there will be no movement of the wreath on windy days to prevent the front door from being scratched. The
Andy Short, Jack Aluminium Systems managing director, talks about the introduction of its pivot door, saying: “The ‘broken plan’ living trend is only becoming more popular and we’ve seen architects and interior designers displaying a great deal of interest in the range of ID30 applications since its launch in 2023.
“Whether it’s large domestic renovations, separating home living spaces, or partitioning studios, working spaces and entrances in offices and commercial spaces, we wanted to make sure that we continue to deliver versatility to our customers. This new door configuration is the fifth new addition we have added to the ID30 range in a year, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and giving our customers a flexible and appealing range – with a bi-fold option also in the pipeline.”

Fentrade Reports Trend
For Low-Rise Curtain Walling In Residential Projects
Fentrade Aluminium has reported the growing popularity of low-rise curtain walling being installed into residential properties.
Whilst curtain walling is often the fabric of choice for commercial applications, Chris Reeks, managing director at Fentrade, is keen to point out that the product’s flexibility is proving popular when it comes to domestic properties too.
He said: “Over the past few months, we have worked with our trade customers on several new build and refurbishment projects to open-up entrances and hallways to create additional space and light for the homeowner. It’s About Architectural Freedom
– Rehau Launches Artevo
Rehau has launched its largest window system to date, giving architects, designers and specifiers the opportunity to incorporate huge profiles that maximise natural light with all the performance benefits of polymer.
The new system, called Artevo, will replace the company’s popular Geneo range. Using the RauFipro-X material as its basis,
Rehau says it has been able to redefine what’s possible in terms of size, production efficiency and originality from today’s polymer window systems.
Artevo launches as a growing body of research emphasises the importance of natural light for both homes and workplaces. In 2022, University College London published a review on ‘daylighting’
PRODUCT NEWS 80 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
and its close connection to higher academic attainment. Harvard Business Review has also reported on the significance of natural light for workers, asking whether it’s now the ‘number one office perk’.
With Artevo, the built environment can now design and develop buildings in direct response to this research. Rehau’s new system can accommodate floor-to-ceiling heights up to 2.6 metres housed in a modern ‘cubic’ look. Integrated force zones also provide increased performance and stability, making it easier to create larger sashes without the need for steel reinforcements.
“Artevo is all about architectural freedom,” says Russell Hand, head of product & echnical at Rehau UK.
“We’ve made several important improvements by evolving the Geneo system for today’s market. These include slimming down the profile size to 80mm whilst at the same time increasing its performance and capability for large spans. Now a building’s original plan can be realised without having to make concessions on design or performance as it nears completion.”
When combined with triple glazing the new system is suitable for Passivhaus projects – the built environment’s highest standard for energy efficiency. Artevo can be fitted with sealed units up to 72mm thick, when used in the flushed-mounted sash, and can also provide a high level of acoustic performance. During testing, the
system was able to achieve sound insulation RW of up to 48dB.
Rehau’s new system is also available with LowE foil, a patentpending technology developed by the company’s engineers. LowE foil is a thermal insert fitted within the chambers of the Artevo window profiles. Replacing traditional foam thermal inserts, this V-shaped, reflective foil can be pre-inserted in the profile, reducing heat radiation by up to five per cent while also preventing convection within the profile chambers. This results in an impressive Uf value of up to 0.81 W/m²K.
In-keeping with the high levels of thermal and acoustic performance, Artevo has been manufactured with sustainability in mind. All Rehau main profiles contain up to 75% recycled content, benefitting from the work carried out by PVCR, Rehau’s dedicated PVC processing facility in Runcorn. In addition, Rehau is now also using recyclates in the glazing beads for Artevo, which is a first for the company.
“This new system is designed to deliver added value throughout,” states Russell. “This starts with the way our windows are made. We know customers want to use the best materials and achieve the highest levels of performance without it costing the earth. This is why ‘evolution’ features in the product’s name – we’ve taken everything that made the Geneo system so successful and adapted it for a market more conscious of design, health and environmental impact.”
Despite modern windows becoming ever bigger, Rehau has been keen to make life easier for those fabricating and fitting them. Artevo is said to be up to 40% lighter than comparative systems, making it easier and cheaper to transport and install.

Sternfenster Launches New Alitherm 400 Casement Window
Sternfenster has launched its new Alitherm 400 casement window, which achieves a Window Energy Rating of A with a double-glazed unit, making it fully compliant with Building Regulations for refurbishment projects. The Alitherm 400 can achieve a U-value of 1.2W/ m2K with a triple glazed unit (with a centre-pane U-value of 0.8W/m2K), making it ideal for newbuild properties, claims the company.
According to the company, the 70mm thermally broken aluminium window also boasts leading weather performance, successfully passing: BS EN 1026 (air permeability); BS EN 1027 (water tightness); and BS EN 12211 (wind resistance). It also comes with a flush sash option and can meet PAS24 or Secured By Design requirements thanks to optional sash claw locks.
The Alitherm 400 window is
available in lead times as short as five days.
“Since 2017, when we invested in our new aluminium facility in Lincoln, we have been a leading fabricator of aluminium windows and doors,” Sternfenster’s sales director Nathan Court said. “Importantly, we applied modern PVC-U fabrication techniques to aluminium window production, giving our customers access to a valuable market, but at a competitive price point and far shorter lead times than traditional alternatives.
“Partnering with Smarts to manufacture their Alitherm 300 window was a key part of this strategy, and the new Alitherm 400 window continues our journey of creating new opportunities for window retail businesses.”
The new Alitherm 400 window comes with Sternfenster’s new Quickglaze knock-in glazing
bead with co-extruded gaskets, which helps reduce time spent on site because less time is spent hunting for parts, and installation is very swift – potentially shaving hours off a job.
The Alitherm 400 casement window comes with additional features that help meet the many demands homeowners place on new windows. These include dual colour options, trickle vents, triple glazing up to 38.8mm, and mega egress hinges if the window needs to offer a fire escape route.
“The Alitherm 400 window was designed to be a modern standard window that will appeal to most homeowners in most situations, offering profitable opportunities for window companies in the process,” Nathan said. “But the final sale often comes down to individual choice, and that is where our new window shines.
“Top of this list are the flash sash option, PAS24/Secured By Design compliance and dual colour. These are comfortably met by the Alitherm 400, making it the ideal aluminium window option for window companies to have in their portfolio.
“And we support our customers by giving them full visibility of the process via Sternfenster-Plus (SF+) and EasyAdmin.”
EasyAdmin allows businesses to produce professional quotes very quickly for homeowners. It also allows window installation companies to have complete oversight of their profit and loss. This information is updated daily and allows business owners to see the health of their accounts in real time. EasyAdmin works with SF+, which improves communication with customers and gives them greater insight into the fabricator’s manufacturing capacity.

As a manufacturer supplying a range of external shading solutions, Caribbean Blinds strongly supports this initiative and actively publicises the benefits of shading including how it can effectively reduce
energy, save money and cut emissions, claims the company.
While Global Shading Day is a fantastic one-day event which successfully unites companies across the world, the Suffolkbased company continuously promotes the power of solar shading throughout the year.
Stuart Dantzic, MD of Caribbean Blinds, said: “As a business, we’re incredibly passionate about external shading and the many benefits it brings. Backing this initiative is a no brainer to us as we are always looking at ways to share our knowledge of external shading.
PRODUCT NEWS 86 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024
“Ultimately by creating a physical barrier between the sun’s energy and glazing, external shading is the most effective way to prevent unwanted solar heat gain, eliminate excessive solar heat gain and stop indoor temperatures soaring and properties overheating.
“As outdoor living continues to be incredibly popular across both the commercial and residential space, it’s important to raise awareness about the impact of solar shading and how it can effortlessly be incorporated into any building or outside space.”

P&P Trade Windows
Invests In Additional Automated Machinery From Haffner
P&P Trade Windows Ltd has recently expanded its fabrication capabilities by purchasing three additional cutting-edge machines from machinery experts, Haffner Ltd.
Amongst the machine investment is Haffner’s popular SBA-2 Machining Centre, which has the ability to increase capacity and improve the quality and manufacturing output for fabricators.
Paul French, Director at P&P Trade Windows, said: “Given our positive experience with Haffner’s machines in the past and considering the inefficiency of our previous machining centre, we turned to them for our latest investment. The SBA-2 Machining Centre has significantly increased the quality and speed of our output.”
The SBA-2 Machining Centre, known for its heavy-duty design and use of top-quality parts, guarantees years of reliable service, says Haffner. Its user-
friendly interface facilitates programming, control and adjustments, empowering fabricators to efficiently scale production output as needed. Capable of performing various operations including sawing, routing and drilling, the SBA-2 is a preferred choice for fabricators seeking versatility and high-quality performance.
Additionally, P&P Trade Windows purchased a second SMR-5 welder and a single head welder. Described as ‘the fastest and most accurate welder on the market’, the SMR-5 can weld one complete window every four minutes, supercharging production output. Paul commented: “Having experienced the exceptional quality, scalability and efficiency of our initial SMR-5 welder, we had no hesitation in returning to Haffner for our second purchase. Its ease of operation and unparalleled quality speak for themselves.”
Beyond speeding up production, the SMR-5 incorporates innovative
features that enhance product quality and reduce waste. Factory-set parameters and automatic alignment mechanisms for transom fences and corner fences contribute to streamlined fabrication, adding impressive value to the fabrication process.
P&P Trade Windows was also keen to commend Haffner for the exemplary service throughout the purchasing process. Paul said: “It’s rare to encounter a company where the CEO and managing director personally engage with clients to tailor machine solutions
to their specific needs, but that’s precisely the level of dedication we experienced with Haffner. Dave Thomas and Matt Thomas provided invaluable guidance and oversaw the entire process seamlessly, from initial consultation to installation and training.”
Whilst all of Haffner’s machines come with an extended warranty, P&P Trade Windows opted for an additional service contract to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Paul said: “Whilst Haffner’s machines are highly reliable, the service contract offers an extra layer of assurance that we value.”
Located in Martock, Somerset, P&P Trade Windows specialises in manufacturing PVC-U windows, doors and conservatories to ‘exceptional standards’. With a wealth of experience exceeding 50 years in installation and manufacturing, the company is said to deliver a quick and reliable trade service across the South West.
One of the clearest indications of a dependable business is how willing previous customers are to return when making a new investment. Haffner’s impressive rate of returning customers serves as a testament to its reputation for delivering machining solutions that facilitate business success.

Shop Clever, Shop Local
Whilst this headline may be found on ads designed to persuade shoppers of the benefits of visiting a local grocers, it applies equally, says Jade Engineering’s Sean Mackey, to buying aluminium frame production tooling
We are a global economy, of that there can be no doubt. And with slick marketing matched by clever logistics, it has become second nature to buy goods that are often – usually? – manufactured on the other side of the world, without blinking. But now and again we are given cause to reflect on just how
fragile our commercial ecosystem is. The most profound of such scenarios was of course the Covid epidemic but other unanticipated quirks of circumstance, weather, incompetence and simple bad luck, include the Ever Given container vessel that got stuck in the Suez canal on 23rd March 2021, halting a massive $60 billion of trade, much of which will never be recovered.
However, Acts of God and general happenstance are also compounded by the machinations of man, such as Britain leaving the
EU, which has left importers and exporters of goods to and from mainland Europe with considerable additional ‘difficulties’ which, whilst overcome, add to cost and time. All of these, says Jade Engineering’s Sean Mackey, make it difficult for him to understand why aluminium window fabricators and their systems suppliers, continue to bring production tooling and simple machinery such as punch tools, across international borders.
Sean explains why he is so exercised by this: “At Jade
MACHINERY 90 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2024

Engineering we manufacture such products, from simple cutting heads and milling heads to custom designed and engineered punch tools for aluminium frame fabrication. And we supply the majority of aluminium frame makers in the UK and Ireland. But, there remains a number of fabricators who, led by their systems houses – usually overseas based – that bring in new tools as well as sending tools for refurbishment, from and to companies overseas. And that doesn’t make sense, as you might imagine, to us at Jade Engineering.”
Their sentiments are understandable of course, if only from the perspective of a business losing sales to another business. But upon closer examination Sean’s sentiments tend to make sense: “We are located in Coventry, in the centre of the country, one and a half hours from the majority of window
and door manufacturers in the United Kingdom, but a few hours’ van journey from all. We have a reputation for producing tooling and machinery that matches the quality of anything else on the market and actually, better than most. And yet a number of producers continue to import and expert their aluminium tooling.”
Despite his protestations Sean does not believe there is any negative agenda, but mostly a matter of habit: “When a company is based on mainland Europe or even further afield, they have their own established networks and suppliers and it is natural to continue trading with these when setting up in a new market. Once established however, it makes sense to look around, to fine tune to the new local market. We talk to hundreds of fabricators of course, who we regularly supply with PVC-U tooling and who have taken on aluminium fabrication. And they are able to compare the logistics of local supply of tooling and related operations and that of their aluminium, overseas based sysco. And they are frustrated with the delays incurred by importing tooling.”
Whichever side of the Brexit line one stands politically, importing from the EU is often fraught with complexity and added cost,
something that is compounded greatly when refurbishment cycles are involved: “Sending tools, such as punch tools for example, back to the European manufacturer for refurbishment doubles the logistical issues,” reflected Sean, “with greater difficulties experienced with EU borders than, for example, China and the Far East. However, although relatively rare, sourcing from the Far East carries with it extremely long lead times and the constant perils of weather, politics and other unpredictable events.”
All of which begs the question: Why does any company continue to bring tooling from overseas? “Of course, for many overseasbased firms they are making money at the gates of their home factory,” explained Sean. “They want to oil the wheels of the larger corporate beast. But all too often, they simply have not considered the implications of buying locally against their traditional extended supply routes. Either way of course, the impact is felt by the fabricator whose production is negatively affected by delays in replacement tooling.
“It’s not a case of ‘Buy British’ out of patriotism. It just makes sense,” concluded Sean.

JFP Revamp Production With Fully Automated Line
John Fredericks (JFP) has revamped its production facility with a state-of-the-art, fully automated frame welding and corner cleaning line, enabling them to service customer demand with even greater efficiency. The window and door manufacturer has invested significantly to further improve quality. The new line has also sped up fabrication, increased capacity, and optimised workforce structure, claims the company.
“We’ve always prided ourselves here on looking ahead and being proactive rather than reactive,” said Mark Dicconson, managing director of JFP.
“We’ve seen an increase in demand for foiled products and this is only going to continue to rise, so we’ve made this latest manufacturing upgrade in advance of this.
“The set up is really, really impressive, with the most advanced machine available.
We’ve now got an Urban SV 800 automatic corner cleaner fed by two Urban AKS 6600 8-headed welders, all on a fully automated conveyor system, along with a transfer table and cooling racks for foiled products.
“Operating through barcode recognition, the system has been designed to recognise different profiles, whether foiled or not, and automatically enter the profile size, thus removing the chance of human error. This enables absolute accuracy and consistency, and increases output.
“This is in addition to the SV 800 automated sash line we installed in April 2023, which increased our efficiencies by almost 50 percent and enabled us to produce an additional 100 frames per day!”

Iconic Steel
Windows To Be Renewed After 100 Years
The iconic steel windows of Adelaide House will be updated by the very company that brought them to life 100 years ago –Crittall Windows.
The leading steel window and door manufacturer will return to the prominent building located on the north bank of the Thames after securing a contract to replace the century old windows
with a modern steel replica.
As a historic Grade II Listed office block, this isn’t a simple manufacture and install project as strict planning requirements and restrictions need to be met. Therefore, the Corporate W20 EVO windows, fitted with 20mm insulated glass unit, have been chosen for this particular project.
Thanks to their versatility in size and shape, the Corporate W20 EVO’s successfully meet specific building limitations and also replicate the slim sightlines and hardware design of the original products manufactured by Crittall Windows in the early 1920s.
While the aesthetic of the windows remains true to the authentic style created a century ago, advances in window technology mean the performance of the product has evolved immensely.
Russell Ager, MD at Crittall Windows, said: “It is an incredible privilege to be asked to return to

Adelaide House a century after we manufactured the windows in this iconic building.
“It is essential the new steel windows perfectly complement the aesthetic of this incredible property and meet the necessary planning requirements, so we have opted for our versatile Corporate W20 EVO windows. Their fantastic appearance and impressive performance will make the perfect addition to the building which is undergoing a huge refurbishment to transform the space into top specification offices on London’s riverside.”

Senior’s Products Prescribed for Refurbishment of Nottingham Hospital
Work is progressing well at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, where aluminium fenestration solutions provider Senior Architectural Systems is undertaking one of its largest retrofit contracts to date. The manufacturer is supplying replacement low U-value aluminium windows as part of wide scale efficiency improvement upgrades to the major hospital.
Working with main contractor Willmott Dixon and specialist contractor Acorn Aluminium, Senior has supplied its SPW600 aluminium system to replace over 18,000m2 of existing windows across the site. This includes the replacement of four storeys of 2m tall single glazed ribbon windows which dominate the hospital’s exterior façade, with the new fenestration installed across office, administrative and public spaces as well as on working wards.
Senior’s popular SPW600
aluminium windows have provided U-values of around 1.3w/m2K, dramatically improving both the look and feel of the building. The thermal-efficiency of Senior’s SPW600 aluminium system has been further enhanced through the use of solar-controlled glazing to reduce the risk of overheating in the summer months, claims the company.
The ambitious programme is due to complete in late 2024 with the Queens Medical Centre, part of the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, remaining operational throughout. The replacement window and door programme is part of an agreement between Nottingham University Hospital and energy company Eon and is expected to reduce carbon emissions and deliver over £2.8 million of energy savings each year, according to the company.

21st Century Innovation, In An 18th Century Home
Starglaze – Sternfenster’s installation division – recently completed a full window reinstallation of the 18th century farmhouse home of Mr and Mrs Wells, in Lincolnshire.
Due to the age of their home, Mr and Mrs Wells found themselves in a tricky position: with solid brick walls, they were told that their home was unsuited for cavity wall insulation, and when their energy survey came back, they found that their farmhouse was Energy Rated E.
“For us, although we couldn’t insulate the walls themselves, we knew that a quick win would be to change all of our very draughty, old timber windows”, said Mr Wells.
“The farmer next door had actually just had Starglaze out to do all of their windows, so they
recommended Starglaze to me as they were so impressed by them.
“From the very first step of initially submitting an enquiry online, the service was second to none. I got an initial call to arrange an appointment where we were shown the options and colours that we could have, in a really friendly, non-pressured way. The salesman had a lot of knowledge and experience, and that really clinched our decision to go with Starglaze.”
The Wells settled for a complete reinstallation of all their windows
to triple-glazed flush PVCu casements, offering increased energy efficiency and durability without compromising on the classic style that they were after.
“With the age of the house being 18th century, we really wanted a style that would be a nod to its heritage, whilst also offering a modern twist, and for us, white flush casements did that,” Mr Wells said.
“We have some old pictures of the farmhouse when it had wooden single pane windows, and the appearance is very similar to the flush casement we have now, which is really nice. And we went for white as it’s just timeless, and blends in nicely with the other houses in this area.
“From the initial online enquiry to installation, it only took Starglaze eight weeks – and that’s for custom designed, triple-glazed windows. The service was just outstanding, and not to mention the real difference in heat that we feel inside our home, without the draughts!”
Sternfenster’s Deceuninck range of flush casement windows are manufactured using Graf Weld technology, which produces smooth, seamless frames. No vinyl is lost at the corner joint, keeping both the frame and sash tough and durable. Their flush design offers a traditional charm to new builds or an enhancing feature to traditional or conservation properties, like the Wells’ farmhouse.
Additionally, with an A WER rating and u-values as low as 1.2 W/m2K, the flush casements pack a punch with their energy efficiency.
Sternfenster’s customer tools and support initiatives also support installers. A virtual showroom enables installers to sit down with homeowners like Mr and Mrs Wells, and visually show them the technical specifications, colour and hardware options, as well as

a 360º CGI tour of products.
Sternfenster has invested heavily in IT solutions to facilitate a closer partnership with its customers. Central to this strategy is Sternfenster’s EasyAdmin system, which allows businesses to produce professional quotes quickly for homeowners. It also allows window installation
companies to have complete oversight of their profit and loss. This information is updated daily and allows business owners to see the health of their accounts in real time.

Mercury Glazing Helps Droylsden Glass
Fulfil A Demanding Project
Epwin Window Systems’ specialist fabricator Mercury Glazing was a crucial partner to longstanding customer Droylsden Glass who has completed a contract to replace 75 vertical sliding windows in a large commercial building in Stockport.
The building was owned by Moorcroft, a debt recovery company. The Moorcroft team was concerned about the safety of the building’s windows because many of the closures were damaged. The team also wanted to improve the building’s energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint without
compromising on its heritage aesthetics.
Droylsden Glass fitted the bill when it came to a local, wellestablished and financially strong company with the expertise and experience to take on the project.
The window system of choice was the vertical sliding sash system from Epwin Window Systems, manufactured by longterm fabrication partner Mercury Glazing.
Kevin Thackeray, Managing Director at Droylsden Glass,
visible throughout the process.
“You could tell that the installation team were really organised, and they were so efficient. The speed, quality and communication is why I would recommend Starglaze”, concluded Mr Wells.
www.sternfenster.com
said: “As always, the technical experience and expertise that Mercury Glazing brought, along with their outstanding commitment to fabrication excellence and customer service, were invaluable on this project.”
The project involved the replacement of 75 windows, two of which were arched.
To ensure that the office environment was completely safe, child restrictors were installed on all the sash windows along with featured tilt restrictors for additional safety.
The windows used 4mm Low-E Planitherm Total+ glass and Warm Edge spacers to maximise energy efficiency performance, while trickle ventilation was installed to meet current building regulations requirements. Privacy film was also applied to ensure a private working area.
As well as being able to meet the demanding technical requirements of the project, the vertical sliding sash system helped Droylsden Glass deliver on the aesthetic requirements. From the authentic ovolo styling to a deep bottom rail and large and small sash profiles, every detail has been considered, including the 37mm ultra-slim meeting rail that faithfully replicates the appearance of a traditional sash window. For this project, the frames were specified in white and the glazing design was completed with white Georgian bars to match the original window aesthetic.

They’re The Focus Of The Room
“We always loved the house, but hated the kitchen and how dark and small it was. Now, we honestly love it. It’s bright and spacious and our favourite part of the house. Our electrician added some LED lights around the rooflights so even at night, they’re still the focus of the room.”
Testimonials don’t get much better than that from a couple in Surrey who had two Whitesales’ em.glaze flat glass Premium rooflights installed in a new ground floor extension in their early 20th century end of terrace property.
Their 5.5m wide x 4m deep extension replaced an old utility room on the back of the house, transforming the kitchen into a light and airy space, complete with rooflights, bifold doors and a living green roof.
The Whitesales em.glaze rooflights were specified by the couple’s architect, One World Design, in response to their brief which was to bring as much as light as possible into the north facing rear of the house.
The couple added: “The kitchen

and the garden face north, so previously the rear of the house was always gloomy, and this affected the whole of the ground floor. We were chatting to one of our neighbours about the build and they said they had decided against doing the same thing a few years ago because they thought the finished result would be too dark. Now that they have seen how good our kitchen looks, they have just signed off their plans ready to build something very similar.”
The whole extension was completed over a four month period, with Whitesales supplying the em.glaze rooflights direct to site for installation by builders Heronlake Construction. The living roof, which has since become a haven for bees, was added after the rooflights by the specialists at Green Roofing.
Flat glass rooflights are currently outstripping conventional glass lanterns in terms of enquiries into Whitesales.
The Whitesales em.glaze Premium feature a sleek flush-glazed edgeto-edge design with an aluminium powder coated frame available in any RAL colour. They come factory pre-glazed for easy installation and are CWCT Class 1 tested as standard, which means they are safe to walk on for maintenance and cleaning.
They have all the thermal insulation properties that energy conscious homeowners demand and the double-glazed units can be specified in clear or diffused glass, depending on the privacy requirements, and with solar control and self-cleaning features.
Em.glaze Premium rooflights are held in stock in anthracite grey in 14 standard sizes on a 3-5 day delivery time or are available to order in a range of bespoke colours and sizes.

Promat Systemglas Specified For Scottish Museum’s Fire Rated Viewing Window
Fire resistant glazing system Promat Systemglas has been chosen for the replacement of a large multi-pane window as part of a refurbishment project at Scotland’s National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride.
Spanning nearly seven metres with a height of one metre, the new viewing window not only improves aesthetics and acoustics, but it helps the museum’s operator, National Museums Scotland, to optimise fire safety within the building it has occupied since it opened in 2001.
A museum, historic farmhouse and working farm, the National Museum of Rural Life explores the land, people and ways of working that have shaped Scotland’s rural history. On display in the museum is Scotland’s largest collection of tractors, combine harvesters and farming machinery, while the farm is home to Ayrshire, Aberdeen Angus and Highland cattle, Tamworth pigs, sheep, hens and Clydesdale horses. Lanarkshire’s Reid family lived in the Georgian farmhouse for ten generations, and rooms are as they would have been in the 1950s.
Working with Hoskins Architects, Promat UK was tasked with developing a fire rated solution for the prominently located window in the main exhibition hall. The
brief demanded EI (integrity and insulation) protection for 60 minutes in line with the fire strategy.
The timber frame Systemglas Ligna EI60 system was chosen, incorporating the intumescent Promat Promaseal-PL Strip around the perimeter of the frame as part of a tested solution. The window was split with three vertical mullions, with Promat F1 glass used in line with its fire test certification which confirms its suitability for use in a landscape orientation. The resulting glazing provides an EI60 fire rating with the added benefit of UV stability, as well as an excellent acoustic rating of 45dBrw.
Main contractors FES engaged with Promat Systemglas recommended installer, Rated Solutions, to complete the installation of the window, as well as provide a Promat timber fire rated door and over panel within the cafeteria area. Given this clear and traceable supply chain covering raw materials sourcing, manufacturing and installation, Promat UK was able to issue a certificate of conformity on completion of the glazing and door, in line with its 360-degree ‘wheel of assurance’ and the golden thread, to offer additional peace of mind for building staff and visitors.

In today’s digital age, social media has become an indispensable tool for businesses to connect with potential clients and grow their customer base. For installers, leveraging social media effectively can significantly boost your visibility and attract more clients.
The Residence Collection uses social media to showcase recent installations and drive business growth. Through platforms like Instagram and Facebook, they share captivating content, engaging directly with followers to build trust and provide valuable insights. This approach amplifies
brand visibility, fosters a vibrant online community, and solidifies The Residence Collection’s reputation as a leader in premium home enhancements.

values, expertise, and unique selling points. Determine what sets you apart from competitors and craft a compelling brand story that resonates with your target audience, whether it’s being a family-run business or offering a faster response time than other installers. Once you’ve pinpointed these strengths, leverage them to promote your business effectively.
Choose the Right Platforms
Not all social media platforms are created equal, and it’s crucial to identify the ones where your potential clients are most active. For instance, platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest are ideal for visual content, making them perfect for showcasing before-and-after photos of your installations.

Utilise Visual Content
Visual content tends to perform exceptionally well on social media, so invest time in capturing

Conservatory
Outlet
Hosts Two Successful Organisations Conferences
Conservatory Outlet, fabricator of home improvement products, is looking forward to hosting several more Network-wide events after its series of Operations Conferences has proved to be a real boost to its retail Network.
The events, held in both Glasgow and Birmingham, allowed members of the fabricator’s Premium Retail Network to come together to discuss industry-specific challenges, changes to Building Regulations, regional legislation, and other topics relating to their businesses.
As part of the round-table forums, Conservatory Outlet invited several guest speakers to present on a range of topics, including innovative new construction methods and other operational matters.
Conservatory Outlet’s CEO, Greg Kane, commented: “Our unique model allows for events like this to take place where everyone comes together without the fear of competition. The turnout for this year’s events in Glasgow and Birmingham was phenomenal, with over 90% of our Retail Network represented by key personnel.
“These events allow everyone to share their knowledge and expertise and work as one to provide solutions that benefit all involved. They are an
incredible tool and have a widespread positive impact across our Network of Premium Retailers.
According to the company, internal feedback scores from the two events have reached a 96% satisfaction level, with the attendees praising the organisation, locations and discussion topics. One such attendee was Stewart Kelly, the managing director of Eden Windows, who said: “It was another fantastic example of the support that Conservatory Outlet provides.
“The guest speakers were informative, and the wide range of topics that we discussed covered everything from product design to health and safety to the structure of contracts. Being able to ask questions, get answers and see what similar companies to Eden are doing is extremely beneficial. It gives us attendees the chance to learn from each other, share best practices and help each other improve.”
Plans are already underway for next year’s events, though the immediate focus is on the company’s upcoming Sales & Marketing Conference, which will be held at Old Trafford stadium later this month.
Greg ended by saying: “With our annual Sales & Marketing Conference on the horizon – and many more events planned through the rest of the year –we’re continuing to provide value-added benefits to our Network members to ensure that they will continue to thrive in a competitive marketplace.
“Conservatory Outlet isn’t just a manufacturer or supplier – it is so much more. We equip all our retailers with the tools and information they need to succeed.”

Business Pilot Training Goes On Tour
Business Pilot, the business management system, is taking its Open Training Days on a UK tour, to give more members of the BPcommunity the opportunity to get involved.
“We’ve had huge success and incredible feedback on our Open Training Day events,” Elton Boocock, managing director at Business Pilot, said. “These additional training days not only help users to understand new features and developments, but also offer the chance to delve into areas of the business management system that they aren’t making
the most of.
“Perhaps most importantly, these events give the BPcommunity the chance to talk to like-minded installers
and share tips on how they use Business Pilot.”
In 2023, Business Pilot hosted their largest ever Open Training Day event in Birmingham which attracted 70 delegates from across the UK and received some great feedback.
Ian Craig from Bon Accord Glass in Aberdeen commented: “We picked up a lot of useful improvements to our current workflow.”
And Deana Newton of Kompass, based in Nottinghamshire, said: “It was worthwhile meeting others who were already deep into using the system and learning tips from them.”
Elton explained: “Last year’s event was awesome. It was fantastic to have so many members of the BPcommunity

together. This year, we’ve decided to go down the route of five smaller events, with bespoke agendas around the key areas that each installation company wants to focus on.
“Taking the events around the country also makes them more accessible for customers.”
The 2024 events will take place on:
• March 27, Crowne Plaza, Birmingham NEC
• April 24, Hilton, London Heathrow T5
• June 13, Marriott Royal, Bristol
• October 23, Innside by Melia, Newcastle
• November 7, Hilton Deansgate, Manchester
Elton added: “One of the Business Pilot mantras for this year is to create the ‘world’s best training department’, and our Open Training Day events are a huge part of making this happen.
“We’re building on the hundreds of five-star reviews that our trainers Rebecca and Arwen have already received from the BPcommunity. Our training diary is always open for bookings, but these events have the added benefit of learning together with other installers.”
Tickets are limited for these events, and are already going fast, so Business Pilot is encouraging users to book as soon as possible to secure their preferred location.
The Birmingham, Bristol and Manchester events coincide with the PiGs events in those cities, so delegates can make the most of extra networking opportunities in the evening.

First Bespoke Industry Festivals Hailed As Great Success
Building Our Skills has reported an excellent level of support for its two pilot bespoke industry careers festivals held last week.
“We’re so grateful to everyone who backed this new initiative,” says Mark Handley, Building Our Skills’ partnerships manager. He adds: “In the end, we had over thirty companies take part on each day and just under 700 students visit. It’s been wonderful to see the industry take up the cause of attracting new talent. We’re hoping that these two events will be the first of many.
“Employability skills clinics played a part in enticing schools and students to the festivals, with local authorities having highlighted just how helpful these clinics were going to be in getting students to think about their careers generally, and the fenestration, glass and glazing industry specifically.
“‘Career Families’ were another facet of the careers festivals that helped students understand the many career options open to them
as they get closer to the world of work.”
The eleven ‘families’ together encompass over 100 individual roles, demonstrating career progression opportunities, training, qualifications and how students can start out on their career journeys in the industry.
It is expected that the events will now expand into additional areas of the country where Building Our Skills is already working with other local education authorities.
The two pilot events were held last week as part of National Careers Week. The first was in South Yorkshire at the Oakwell Stadium, home of Barnsley FC, and the second in Manchester at the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City Football Club. Building Our Skills worked in conjunction with the education bodies in South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester to bring these events to fruition. https://bit.ly/3JdH5xI

Rated Solutions Wins Promat Systemglas Installer of the Year Award
Timber joinery specialists Rated Solutions have been announced as the winner of the Promat Systemglas Installer of the Year award after demonstrating excellence in the installation of a number of superior quality and complex fire resistant glazing projects during 2023.
The company has partnered with Promat UK for more than five years, and its expertise at the installation stage of the fire resistant glazing supply chain has played a key role in regularly achieving high levels of client satisfaction, claims the company. As an approved
installer, Rated Solutions benefits from extensive technical support from Promat, and its team has received comprehensive training on all the Systemglas systems and options.
Amongst the Promat Systemglas projects delivered by Rated Solutions in 2023 was Victorian Market in Inverness – a location which required the team to work more than 600 miles away from home! Here, the team installed EI60 (integrity and insulation) fire-rated timber doors and an arched glazing feature for one of the entrances to a newly refurbished market hall.
In another project involving a heritage building, Rated Solutions completed the installation of a large gothic fire resistant window, again using Systemglas Ligna, as part of the multi-million pound refurbishment of Rochdale Town Hall. And in Sheffield, the company pulled-out all the stops to ensure an office developer could complete a fit-out in record time with the installation of several large Systemglas Ligna EI30 screens, two of which featured doors.
In addition to providing Promat with an installation service, Rated Solutions also provides the company with a joinery service.
Commenting on winning the award, Fodos Joannides “Joe” of Rated Solutions said: “We’re thrilled to be presented with this award from a great systems

partner. The support Promat has provided to our team over the past few years has enabled us to really understand the systems and focus on the finer details that makes a massive difference to the end result.”
Cath McLean, sales manager for Glass at Promat UK added: “Congratulations to Joe and the team. With a number of excellent companies within our Systemglas approved installer network, it was never going to be easy to choose a winner for this award.
“However, we decided that the accolade should go to Rated Solutions given the tremendous versatility and flexibility they’ve demonstrated throughout the last 12 months, which has resulted in some fantastic client feedback.”

After raising over £15,000 for charity last year by completing the National Three Peaks with just minutes to spare, Conservatory Outlet and its Network of Retailers is unveiling its next fundraising effort: The 24 in 24 in ’24.
In a bid to up the stakes, figures from Conservatory Outlet and its retail partners will travel to Keswick in June from where they will attempt to scale the Lake District’s 24 peaks in just 24 hours.
Led by Conservatory Outlet CEO, Greg Kane, the group will walk over 28 miles and cover over 4,250 metres of elevation –that’s more than a marathon and equivalent to climbing Ben Nevis three times!
“After the success of last year’s fundraising efforts, we had to go
even bigger,” Greg begins.
“This will be an incredibly tough challenge for us all. It’ll be as much of a mental challenge as a physical one but it’s something that we’re all looking forward to. We yet again have a fantastic team taking part, with participants coming from across the United Kingdom to help raise money for our charity of choice this year, Mind.”
Founded in 1946, Mind is one of the most prominent mental health charities in England and Wales. Speaking about the decision

“Mind does fantastic work and their work is incredibly important. We trust that you’ll support us in our efforts!”
The team will begin their challenge on June 4th going in a circular route before finishing the next day after climbing Scafell Pike, Helvellyn, Haystacks, Great Gable and 20 other named peaks in the Lake District
Greg ended by adding; “I often say that our Network of Premium Retailers is like a family. Events such as this showcase how strong we are and exactly what we can achieve by working together. There’s no doubt that we’ll spur each other on and we’ll not only complete this monumental challenge but raise a fantastic amount for such a fantastic cause whilst doing so!”
