Clayton Glass Acquires Romag

Ryan Green, Managing Director, Clayton Glass

County Durham-based Clayton Glass Ltd has announced the acquisition of specialist glass manufacturer Romag Ltd for an undisclosed sum. As a result of this acquisition by Clayton Glass, the new deal brings together two of the North East’s leading glass and glazing businesses under the same ownership. However, they will continue to operate as separate entities with their respective management teams, operating in completely distinct parts of the glass industry. Romag produces specialist glass products and security glazing laminates, serving the building integrated PV, security, architectural and transport sectors. The company has annual sales of around £15 million and employs 150 people. Clayton Glass Group manufactures insulated glass units for the domestic sector and specialist glass for conservato4 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016

ries and is based in North Stanley with further manufacturing sites in South Shields and an investment in Northern Express Glass based in Fleetwood. This equates to a turnover of £27 million, employing 250 people. Combined, the new Group will have a turnover in excess of £40 million, with over 400 employees, making it one of the largest independent glass companies in the UK. Though there are core synergies between both companies, including some glass finishing processes, each will continue to be run independently, though there will be opportunities for solar PV for the solid roof market through the market leading SMARTGLASS® brand. Ryan Green, managing director of Clayton Glass commented: ‘The strategic acquisition of Romag is a great fit for Clayton, given the geographical location and glass

sector in general. In time we hope to be able to co-work on projects, but for the immediate future our focus remains on building both businesses on the back of excellent product quality, innovation and exemplary levels of customer service.’ Earlier this year, Clayton Glass was included in the prominent third edition of London Stock Exchange’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain report and also won IGU Manufacturer of the Year 2015 in the National Fenestration Awards. Executive Team Announces Acquisition Of The Polyframe Group Of Companies make Polyframe the definitive supplier of choice.”

Polyframe Group Limited, the manufacturer and distributor of trade windows and doors, announced today that its senior management team has successfully acquired the Polyframe group of companies. Polyframe began serving customers in 1992 with the vision of offering an unrivalled level of reliability, flexibility and customer service, along with the most extensive product portfolio within the PVCu and aluminium sector. Since then Polyframe has grown into one of the largest manufacturing companies of PVCu and aluminium windows, and composite doors within the UK, with a group turnover exceeding £50m. The acquisition, led by Ian Macdougal, Polyframe’s CEO, was prompted by the retirement of

founder and Chairman, Martyn Buckley. Ian is supported by fellow Polyframe directors Jeremy Stott, Peter Dyson, David Eagle, Richard Lee and Nick Summers. Oliver Robinson, will join as interim COO and Jim Faulds joins as non-executive Chairman. Ian Macdougal said, “The outlook for our industry is strong and extremely positive. This, together with the quality of our operations and the calibre of our staff were the deciding factors in our acquisition. As part of this transaction, we have been fortunate to secure funding from Cairngorm Capital, a specialist investment firm which has considerable expertise in our industry, both as an investor but most importantly for us, operationally. Together as partners, we will have the resources and the expertise to

Cairngorm Capital’s investment was led by Andrew Steel, Managing Partner, who added, “Polyframe is an excellent example of the sort of business in which we like to invest – it is the leading competitor in its market with attractive growth opportunities and a highly capable management team. Our involvement will allow Ian and his team to pursue their strategy of enhancing the breadth of Polyframe’s offering, to the benefit of customers, employees and suppliers” Martyn Buckley, founder of Polyframe commented “Having built my company to become the industry leader over the past twenty-five years, it is pleasing to pass it on to such a strong management team. The team at Cairngorm Capital has demonstrated flexibility, integrity and determination in completing this investment despite the turbulent financial markets following the Brexit vote.” www.polyframetrade.co.uk

GGF President Resigns

GGF President, Andrew Glover of West Yorkshire Windows, has regrettably decided to step down from the position to devote more time to his company’s activities.

Andrew stated that “This was a hard decision to make and not one I have taken lightly. With all the structural changes being made, it became apparent to me that moving forward I didn’t have the time the role needed. I am a strong supporter of the Glass and Glazing Federation, but my main actions must be focused on my own company and my staff”.

Nigel Rees, GGF Chief Executive, said “It is a great shame that Andrew has felt the need to make this decision but I fully appreciate why he needed to. I would like to thank him for all his efforts whilst a member of the GGF Board of Directors”. The GGF will now be engaging with its Members to find a replacement to take on the President’s role. No Sign Of A Brexit Impact

On Construction In June With £6.2 Billion Worth Of Contracts Awarded

month, contributing to 81 per cent of all commercial and retail construction value.

After an eventful final week of June with a series of shocks sent through the economy, the construction sector managed to hold strong, with new orders reaching £6.2 billion on the month, the highest figure of any month so far in 2016. According to the June edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI, the two stalwarts of the construction sector; residential & infrastructure, both had year on year rises in June, with contract values increasing by 26 per cent and 14 per cent 6 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016

respectively. London regained the top spot for construction contract value by location back from Scotland after it held the position over the last two months, mainly due to a number of major renewable energy projects. London’s construction boost this month was helped greatly by the award to develop the Bechtel House Hammersmith valued at £275 million and the first phase of the £100 million Royal Albert Dock project. Both these major schemes help propel office construction to a total of £650 million worth of contracts awarded on the

Commenting on the figures, Michael Dall, lead economist at Barbour ABI, said: “With the majority of the sector under the assumption that the UK would not vote to leave the European Union the result left many surprised, and our June figures are under the assumption that it would be ‘business as usual’.” “We have seen housebuilder stocks fall in the wake of the vote and anecdotal evidence that projects are being cancelled. However, that is not evident in the data as of yet and it is a case of wait and see in terms of the impact Brexit may have.” For more information, go to www.barbour-abi.com or follow us on Twitter @BarbourABI for all the latest construction data news.

Jack Aluminium Celebrates One Year In Its New Distribution Centre

New Housing Minister

Must Build On Positive Legacy The new Housing and Planning Minister, Gavin Barwell MP, must build on the positive legacy left behind by his predecessor Brandon Lewis MP, the Federation of Master Builders has said in response to the appointment. Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “We welcome the appointment of Gavin Barwell as the new Minister of State for Housing and Planning. The Government has rightly identified housing as one of the greatest challenges facing this country and having reaffirmed its commitment to building one million new homes over the course of this parliament, Barwell is assuming an important position at a critical juncture. Brexit presents a challenge to the house building industry, and it will require bold leadership if the progress that has been made over the last few years isn’t to be lost as a result of any sense of uncertainty within our sector. Momentum must be maintained. Berry continued: “It’s encouraging that Barwell has previous experience in the Department for Communities and Local Government as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Greg Clark, who has been a great champion of local house builders. Barwell’s predecessor Brandon Lewis similarly under-

stood the significance of reviving the SME house building sector if the Government is to achieve its housing targets, both by increasing volume and speeding up build out rates. It’s of vital importance that Barwell continues with the positive legacy Lewis left behind, which saw house building completion figures rise and a range of initiatives introduced aimed at empowering smaller developers. Berry concluded: “SMEs are nevertheless still at a serious disadvantage in this country with far too many struggling to access the finance they need to build and hampered by a planning system that all too often places the same requirements on small developments as it does for larger ones. More needs to be done to overcome these constraints. With a new Prime Minister in place, now is perhaps the time to start thinking about more radical solutions to the housing crisis, including enabling local authorities to fund house building by lifting borrowing caps. Local house builders are ready to play a much larger role in getting Britain building again, and we look forward to working with the new Housing Minister in identifying how SMEs can help him achieve this.” www.fmb.org.uk

Jack Aluminium celebrates one year in its new distribution centre in Coventry. “It’s been a superb move,” says Jeff Pearson, Sales Director at Jack Aluminium. “We have quadrupled the space and added more room for our expert specification and technical support team.” The 10,000 sq ft distribution centre and HQ is perfectly located in the centre of the country. The move has given Jack Aluminium space to expand and the results are outstanding. The commercial aluminium systems company, best known for the no-compromise, highly energy efficient and high security TD68 Jack Door, holds more stock for faster turnaround which is great news for customers. “Demand for Jack Door continues to grow,” says Jeff Pearson. “The TD68 Jack Door is designed to provide fabricators with everything specifiers and contractors want from a high-quality, Secured by Design commercial door, without having to pay a premium for it. It is now proven across many high-usage applications including schools, shops and hospitals. “Energy efficiency, security, durability and good looks are the main drivers in commercial glazing specification and the Jack Door has been developed to help fabricators achieve these in a cost-effective way. www.jackaluminium.co.uk

Aluminium extruder Exlabesa sees over

40% increase in turnover

Martin Nettleton, Managing Director at Euroglaze with his 20 year old son George

Special Anniversary

For Euroglaze

July 1996 was a very special time for Martin Nettleton, Managing Director at Euroglaze – not only was it the month that he joined his father at the Barnsley based fabricator but it was also the month that his son George was born. Now, 20 years on, Martin is celebrating his anniversary at Euroglaze with George at his side.

Aluminium extruder Exlabesa has just reported a 43% increase in turnover compared to the same quarter last year. Derek Hodgson, the company’s General Manager, says: “We’re delighted with these results. They show that our comprehensive and exciting product range, which is all manufactured in the UK, combined with our commitment to service, is delivering what the market needs.” Exlabesa is one of the few aluminium extruders in the UK to have its own anodising plant. Combined with the two extruders, two ageing ovens and vertical powder coating plant it has in its South Yorkshire manufacturing base, it means the company has the manufacturing strength and turnaround times to be able to deliver for its customers. Mill finish items are on a four working day turnaround and paint finish items are on a seven working day turnaround. Exlabesa also keeps high stock levels to ensure orders can be despatched complete and uses its own transport for complete reliability.

Exlabesa’s range includes windows, doors, bifold door systems, patio door systems, shopfront (both thermal and non-thermal) and steel replacement systems. It will also be extending its curtain wall system range in the next few weeks to increase the options in this area. Alongside the comprehensive product range, Exlabesa also offers excellent customer support. Design development, technical assistance, fabrication assistance and more all demonstrate the company’s ability and willingness to provide a value-added service that helps its customers to grow their businesses. Derek concludes: “We’re a growing company and we’re proud of our success. We have the experience, the expertise and the commitment to service what fabricators need from a systems partner. It’s what has driven this year on year increase in sales and it’s what we hope will drive continued success.”

Martin said: “George is working in the factory for a while helping to fabricate our REHAU trade frames before heading off to university, and being able to share my anniversary here with him definitely makes it that bit more special. “I worked here alongside my Dad for several years and I know just how proud he would have been to see us now.” In his 20 years at Euroglaze, Martin Nettleton has helped to transform the business into one of the UK’s most efficient fabricators, using a lean manufacturing model based on Japanese production techniques. The company now produces around 900 frames per week for trade customers across the UK. It prides itself on offering customers a complete range of REHAU products – from fire rated windows and vertical sliders to casements and fully reversibles, and on offering the perfect balance of efficiency and flexible, friendly service. www.euroglaze.co.uk

What Brexit Means For

Technical Standards Statement from Steve Rice, GGF Technical Director

export to an EU country.

The United Kingdom has voted to leave the European Union and British companies need to be aware of what this means to our market and how we will conform to technical standards in the future.

Fourthly:

At this time the GGF technical perspective is as follows: Firstly: The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) an EU directive has been enacted into UK law in 2013. Therefore nothing will change until the government of the day make changes to replace it and enacts a new law to cover its legal requirements. The GGF does not foresee anything happening on this before 2020. So would strongly advise that companies ensure they continue to CE mark their products if they fall under a harmonised European Norm/standard (hEN). Secondly: CEN: the European Committee for Standardization is made up of all the national standardization bodies, i.e. BSI, DIN, AFNOR, UNI, etc., throughout Europe. CEN’s remit is stated as follows: “CEN is one of three European Standardization Organizations that have been officially recognized by the European Union and by the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) as being responsible for developing and defining voluntary standards at European level.” The important words are ‘voluntary standards at European level“. Therefore all of the ‘glass and glazing’, ‘window and door’ and ‘hardware’ standards are basically voluntary. They only become mandatory under EU legislation when the part containing the Annex ZA is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU). As long as the CPR remains in our national legislation, compliance with the harmonised European Norms (hENs) will remain a fact of life. Thirdly: All other members of the European Union will continue to follow the CPR. This will mean that any products exported from the UK to the EU will continue to be required to be CE marked. So in short, if your products are not CE marked then you will not be legally able to 12 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016

The production of the European standards has, for the first time, ensured a level playing field for our ‘glass and glazing’ products. We do not believe any of UK companies would desire to return to the ‘old days’, i.e. when every country had different standard and system of compliance. We expect that the present suite of European standards, and those to come, will be embraced by all in the industry. Having stated what might be the obvious to some we need to inform you as to how we, the Glass and Glazing Federation, will operate in the future in this arena: • GGF technical officers will continue to be fully in volved with BSI (British Standards Index) committees; • Technical officers and GGF Members will continue to be delegated as UK experts to CEN technical committees and working groups; • We will continue to put forward our views on standards when they are available for comment; • We will continue to represent the views of our membership to the standardization bodies whether at national or European level; • Through our involvement with other European Trade Associations we will continue to put the views of our members and attempt to influence the direction within the European market. Also we will continue our involvement with the UK government to make sure that our membership is aware, at the earliest possible opportunity, of legislative changes that may influence our market. With respect to standardisation and compliance with the CPR nothing has changed yet by the last week’s EU Referendum result and any likely changes will be several years away. The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) will however continue to monitor this situation and keep its Members and all in the industry informed of any changes in the future. www.ggf.org.uk

Long-Standing Construction Firm Sisk

Nominates Hueck UK As Preferred Supplier The UK arm of international construction contractor John Sisk & Son, part of the family-run SISK Group, has chosen aluminium building systems specialist, Hueck UK, as preferred supplier for future projects. The development follows a very successful collaboration between the two companies at the recently completed Rathbone Market regeneration scheme, which has seen the creation of more than 650 new homes, alongside community areas and retail spaces. Ange Francis, Façade Manager at John Sisk & Son, said: “We were involved in the Rathbone Market project right from the early stages and worked with Hueck to deliver the high performances and look that the client and architect wanted, while firmly controlling the costs. “Hueck’s design capabilities, their extremely wide and versatile collection of products, and their expert approach to the architect’s design and contractor’s implementation have all contributed to the successful completion of Rathbone Market, and the subsequent announcement of an even closer collaboration with John Sisk & Son on future projects,” added Ange. There were strict requirements for effective noise reduction as the project is situated close to the busy A13 road. We used our Lambda 77 L inward and outward opening windows and doors, boasting a sound insulation level of 46 dB, to deliver excellent comfort for the end-user. “The contractor’s early involvement in the project and close collaboration with us and the architect meant that the specification process was extremely accurate right from the beginning. We are delighted to be named preferred partners by John Sisk & Son and look forward to the joint projects ahead,” concluded Leon. “To see such a major project growing from its incipient phase through to completion gives me incredible satisfaction,” said Ange. “This requires trusted, reliable suppliers, and that is exactly what we found in Hueck UK.” For more information visit www.hueck.com or call 0044 121 7671344

Prefix Launches Luxury Opus Brand

Following unprecedented interest at the FIT Show, Prefix Systems have now formally launched their integrated Opus system of composite windows, doors, lantern and conservatory roofs and also a proven ‘warm’ Orangery solution. It’s a product design that brings together the proven performance of aluminium and the sheer beauty of hardwood timber in perfect harmony. For architects and those consumers averse to PVCu as a material, it’s the perfect near maintenance free design, that’s not only considered to last for many years, but can be individually tailored for each project. There are literally hundreds of exterior RAL colours to chose from, a range of hardwood finishes to the inside and even the adoption of the latest multi-point locking solutions, security upgrades and solar control glass. It’s very much a tactile product that needs to be seen and with this in mind Prefix Systems have manufactured a number of sample windows in branded Opus bags, with premium brochures for eager installation 18 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016

companies. All the design options in the range are carefully manufactured in the UK by experienced and time served craftsmen, adding to the luxury proposition that is Opus. The first few installations have been completed incorporating various window, door and roofing combinations from the system, with all those involved in each respective project thrilled with the performance and undeniable beauty of the products carefully installed. With period inspired greens and contemporary greys likely to be the most popular external finishes, Opus is a product equally adaptive to both period inspired properties and more modern homes. Chris Baron, co-director of Prefix Systems commented: ‘Opus is a luxury brand in every sense of the word and will open up new sales channels for our customers. With the performance of aluminium to the outside and the timeless elegance of hardwood to the interior we believe that we’ve taken glazed product design to a new level.’ For further information and a free copy of the Opus brochure, contact the head office on 01254 871800, visit www.prefixsystems.co.uk, e-mail enquiries@prefixsystems.co.uk

SWISSPACER has extended its manufacturing plant in Gliwice, Poland to meet strong demand for its warm edge spacer bar. In response to growing sales across Europe, SWISSPACER has in-

creased the total floorspace by 22,000 sq ft to over 60,000 sq ft. The Gliwice factory opened in 2011. Over the past five years sales have grown significantly and

the factory has more than doubled capacity to cope with demand. SWISSPACER has two further manufacturing plants in Germany and Switzerland, all serving markets across Europe and worldwide. Rutger van Eijk, SWISSPACER Head of Sales Europe says: “We’ve seen a huge increase in SWISSPACER sales over the past five years – particularly in countries like the UK and Ireland where we are market leader – so we’ve expanded our Polish plant to increase capacity. As building regulations demand higher performance windows, more and more people are choosing SWISSPACER because it offers excellent thermal performance and long-lasting results. SWISSPACER is also ideal for triple glazing and is the most commonly used warm edge brand in Passivhaus installations”. www.swisspacer.com.

Industry’s most widely used H & S

tool tackles productivity issues 12,000 users of BRE’s health and safety tool YellowJacket are set to benefit from a new lean construction tracking feature that will help them measure and improve productivity in the onsite delivery of their construction projects.

The tool enhancement comes hot on the heels of a recent announcement by Head of the Infrastructure Commission Lord Adonis who said raising productivity was as a critical issue for the industry in light of the major infrastructure projects being planned. Lean construction is about improving efficiency in the design and construction stages by applying lean construction principals. In practice this means looking at processes and people and identifying and removing wasteful activities that prevent value being effectively delivered. Its aim is to improve project delivery timescales and reduce costs for the benefit of the client and the contractor. YellowJacket’s new lean feature enables users to capture real time data related to time spent on non-value-added activities for example the process issue

type, the number of people involved and the amount of time lost on site for each process issue. Data captured will be displayed in visual reports including heat maps, graphs and timelines, letting you know exactly how your projects are performing. By collecting this performance data users can start to identify and target areas where improvements can be made. BRE YellowJacket Director Crawford Burns said ‘Improving productivity and reducing costs and delivery time are key tenets of the Governments Construction 2025 strategy which sets out a plan to deliver a 33% reduction in construction project costs and a 50% reduction in overall project delivery time. Our aim is to help our customers who are already gathering data on Health and Safety to start measuring their processes in line with lean and ultimately improve productivity’ The new feature is free to access for all current YellowJacket users. Eurocell Modus Doors And Windows Get

BBA Quality Backing

After a rigorous testing programme, the British Board of Agrément (BBA) has given its backing to the market-leading Modus system of PVC-U doors and windows developed by Eurocell. The BBA considered keyproduct features, including: thermal properties, weathertightness, ventilation, resistance to intrusion, access and durability. Its tests concluded that the PVC-U profiles would continue to function satisfactorily for more than 35 years and confirmed a U-value across the Modus ranges of 1.2 W/m² using 4/20/4 mm sealed double-glazed units. The BBA Agrément Certificate covers Modus Single Leaf and Double Leaf Door System, glazed in white, cream or woodgrain finishes, for use in replacement and new-build applications, for external use as primary and secondary

access doors in walls of domestic and non-domestic buildings. It also certified the Modus Fully Reversible System, plus the Outward Opening and Tilt and Turn Systems, in white, cream or woodgrain finish, for use in replacement and new-build applications in dwellings, light commercial premises or similar habitable applications. An Agrément Certificate is the mark of quality, safety and reliability that guarantees a product’s fitfor-purpose. It is only awarded to those products and systems that have successfully completed a series of comprehensive assessments. These include laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and inspections of production and provide clients and specifiers the assurance that the product will perform as described.

20 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016

The effective thermal performance is due to the 75mm six-chamber profile system used in the Modus that enables the range to achieve a U-value as low as 0.7 by installing triple-glazed units. This led to Modus becoming one of the very first systems to achieve the BRFC Window Energy Rating (WER) of A++. This is only awarded to windows with an energy index value equal to or greater than +20; and Modus A++ designs achieve this for casement, reversible and tilt and turn windows. Consisting of 50% post-consumer recycled PVC-U as standard, the Modus range of doors and windows demonstrates sustainable use of materials and a smaller carbon footprint than products made or recycled outside of the UK. Eurocell optimises material usage by employing its dual material extrusion technology (DMET) that layers post-consumer recycled and ‘virgin’ material simultaneously, so the recycled material is concentrated in the central core of the profiles where it cannot be seen once the door or window is installed. Coming with a 12-year guarantee*, the Modus system is available in nine solid and woodgrain-effect colours, all of which are available with white internal finishes to create a light and airy living environment. A further range of more than 25 solid and woodgrain effect finishes is available, including colour both sides. To also help simplify specification, a selection of Modus BIM models is available to download for free at www.eurocell.co.uk/ bimmodels. BRE Centre For Resilience Responds To Risk

Report From Committee

On Climate Change Dr Stephen Garvin, Director of BRE Centre for Resilience responds to the risk assessment issued this week to Government by the Committee on Climate Change. The report UK Climate Change Risk Assessment Evidence Report sets out the most urgent risks and opportunities arising for the UK from climate change and represents more than three years of work involving hundreds of leading scientists and experts. ‘This is a very welcome risk report from the Committee on Climate Change which highlights the importance of acting now on the infrastructure we develop so that long term resilience is designed in or retrofitted – this is what BRE’s CEEQUAL and BREEAM schemes enable – better adaption to climate change effects now and in the future. But there is a substantial knowledge gap we need to fill to get the built environment ready and adapted for the future – the social, economic and environmental risks are significant. The BRE Centre for Resilience has made a start – later this year we will issue 2 reports on studies we’ve conducted around tackling overheating in urban dwellings and the development of flood resilience repair standards for homes. We will also launch a new demonstration project with insurers AXA – a ‘flood resilient’ house which is being refurbished with a range of materials and products that will enable a home to recover quickly and with limited damage should flooding occur. www.bre.co.uk/

GGF Changes Structure And Governance A great deal of discussion and consideration has been undertaken on the governance and structure of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and its Group of subsidiary companies. In order to facilitate the process and allow the Subsidiaries to flourish and grow, and bring positive benefits to the Trade Federation activities, the GGF Board has decided on the following structure. 1. The GGF Trade Federation will operate as a single entity, continuing to provide excellent service to its Members. It will be led by Nigel Rees as the Chief Executive, with a Board of Directors constituted from the GGF Membership. 2. The Subsidiaries will be encompassed within a new Group company led by a Group Chief Executive and Group Board made up from within the GGF, supported by Non-Executive Directors. 3. The new Group Company will be a fully owned subsidiary of the Trade Federation with its new Group Chief Executive directly

accountable to the GGF Board. 4. The Subsidiaries will continue to operate their own Boards; the participants of these Boards may change from those currently in place. 5. All of these changes have been introduced following a legal review of the proposed structure. After lengthy GGF Board discussions and completion of the legal review of the proposed structure, The Board has decided to appoint Jon Vanstone as Group Chief Executive of the new Group company with immediate effect. This was a major decision for the Board of Directors and is viewed as a positive step for the Federation, the GGF Staff and Members. They are confident that this will provide greater benefit for the GGF and its Membership and allow both the GGF and the new Group to function and prosper in existing and potential new markets.

Flair Get Ahead With

Invisifold

Flair Plastic Products Marketing Manager Adrian Keegan is justifiably excited about Flair’s exciting 2016. Here he tells as a little about the company and what’s making Flair tick.

The company reports an excellent first half of the year and says that it’s largely down to the introduction of a number of new products. As well as the noticeably clean and well ordered factory where Flair manufacture their Kommerling PVCu and Smarts aluminium products, there is also a well stocked trade counter where local customers can order anything from windows and doors, trims and roofline, all the way down to workwear and cleaning cloths. Customers from further afield can order through the Flair online shop. Flair have recently introduced the Kommerling PremiFold slide and swing system, which pairs the chamfered C70 and ovolo O70 profile suites with the greenteQ Invisifold Slide & Fold hardware system.

They launched PremiFold/Invisifold at the FiT Show and were overwhelmed at how popular the product was and the positive feedback received by all visitors. Flair featured a door and an outward opening window on the stand and both were swamped by curious visitors. Adrian says ‘We took lots of firm enquiries from installers and our sales team has been busy following those up since the show. We’re at the point now where everyone has been quoted and most are now buying. We’re making 3 or 4 PremiFolds a week at the moment from a standing start just a couple of months ago and we know that will continue to grow, particularly when the window solution is available after testing is completed. We’ve made various configurations including a really nice 6 pane door and have had to create more fabrication space to cope with the anticipated demand.’ 700++Flair customers have the option of buying a standard PremiFold door or can upgrade to

Space is being made in Flair’s large on-site showroom for PremiFold doors and windows. Trade customers are always welcome to bring their own customers to the showroom so everyone can try before they buy. The PremiFold concept is unknown to most of the general public so giving them the chance to operate a working sample usually supplies the wow factor that leads to a sale. Adrian advises ‘Because the greenteQ Invisifold hardware is all concealed it means we can make PremiFolds on any of our 9 stocked colours. Anthracite grey is proving particularly popular. The end users love the colour options and the fact that they can choose how many door leaves to open, and whether to fully fold them or just slide for ventilation. It’s a truly flexible door that allows customers to get the full use out of their garden space. Feedback that we are receiving from installers is that PremiFold is very easy to fit, so time taken on site is kept to a bare minimum.’ As well as promoting PremiFold, Flair have also started manufacturing the Smarts Visofold aluminium bi-fold door, using greenteQ Clearspan hardware. Clearspan offers plenty of adjustment so, like PremiFold, is very easy to install. This is making it another hit with installers and a separate area has also been created for Visofold production. www.flairwindows.com

Goldseal – A Very Big Little Business

Many years ago, a fledgling trade fabricator called Glazerite began to grow, firstly by giving its small customers the kind of service that others only gave to their big accounts. But then, and more uniquely, it went on growing by remaining loyal to those same small customers even after the much bigger ones started to sign up. Now, as a result, some of those small customers are doing very big things, still with the support of what is now The Glazerite UK Group Ltd, and there could be

no better example than Aylesbury-based Goldseal Conservatories Limited. Comprising only Gary Copp with son Rhys and their friend Adam as fitters, the company has a portfolio of some very enviable installations worth as much as £60,000 per household, with no salespeople, no advertising and no promotions – and business has never been better. Gary explained: “Glazerite has built itself by working with small companies like us that need to keep a level of service and trust

in everything we do. That is very important to us and has been a big part in our getting to where we are today.” Trust is a very big part of that support, he added: “If I ring and say a frame has arrived damaged, they will take my word and get a replacement out to me straight away, not wait until they see the return, so I can get the job done. It was not so at the beginning, he continued. Having been in the industry most of his working life, he took the big step of setting up on his own ten years ago when he grew frustrated at working for other people but at first it did not work out too well: “We just weren’t getting the support we needed from our first supplier. Then after a couple of years, we moved over to Glazerite and straight away wished we’d done it sooner!” Goldseal’s customer profile of both high value properties and many traditional village locations fits in ideally with Glazerite’s product range, so the Residence9 flush sash is much in demand as well as the mainstay of the acclaimed VEKA FS70 and its online gallery at www.goldseal.org.uk shows just a few of the installations in its impressive portfolio.

Made For Trade Partnership With Emmegi Reinforced By New CNC Machine Growing bi-folding door and conservatory roof supplier Made For Trade have seen their relationship with machinery specialist Emmegi strengthened after the purchase of a two new CNC saws to manufacture their upcoming Korniche lantern roof. Made For Trade, who operate over several factories in Teesside, now own four CNC machines by the brand, with Emmegi’s Sales Manager Martin Linnell describing the close partnership between the two firms as ‘genuine’. He said: “Over the past four years, Made for Trade have shown real loyalty to Emmegi and we have repaid that by delivering exemplary service all the way along.” Martin added: “Since we first started talking to Bradley Gaunt (Made For Trade’s Managing Director) and his team about what he wanted for his business, we’ve supplied a whole raft of machines to match their ambitious expansion plans and have supported them all the way with quality products, reliable service and expert advice when required.” Prior to the arrival of the CNC machines, Made For Trade had been

operating older profile saws, which restricted production when the business saw increased demand and expansion. Emmegi advised on the purchase of a Classic Twin electronic double mitre saw in 2013 which boasted of electronic angle positioning to allow for greater accuracy. Impressed with the service provided, Made For Trade ordered a second Phantomatic T3A and beadsaw in 2015 and two more saws were added this year to help meet demand, including a specifically tooled X4 four axis machine for the manufacture of the company’s new aluminium lantern roof. Made For Trade’s Bradley Gaunt said: “When we decided new machinery was required during the expansion of the business, we felt that Emmegi were absolutely the right company to go to. They were able to deliver quality equipment that could cope with the high demands of our factories.” With the launch of their innovative aluminium lantern roof just around the corner, Made For Trade hope that the high tech machinery will not only help to accommodate an

increase in sales on their existing range, but also allow for accurate and fast production of their new product. Bradley explained: “With our loyal customer database increasing on a weekly basis and production on our Korniche lantern roof due to start soon, the CNC saws will allow us to increase productivity and become even more accurate and efficient.” About the Korniche lantern, Bradley added: “From the word go, the experience of taking delivery of the Korniche will be all about quality, style and ease of fitting for the installer. We can’t wait to start manufacturing and to show our customers the result of neatly two years of hard work in design and development to create a truly unique product.” For more information on Made For Trade’s aluminium bi-folding doors, conservatory roofs, or the new Korniche lantern, visit www. madefortrade.co or call 01642 610799. Dear

Gerald Voters’ decision to leave the EU in the Brexit referendum caught commentators and the political establishment by surprise. We were warned about short term volatility in shares and exchange rates and we got them. A week after, the FTE 100 stock market had its best day for five years. The following day it fell back on news that the Bank of England may cut interest rates in August and restart quantitative easing. Commentators who assumed the worst, marked down housebuilders shares. Steve Morgan chairman of Redrow whose shares dropped 30% as a result said: “sites remain busy, post Brexit, reservations continue to be taken. There is a long term underlying demand for new homes following decades of undersupply that leaves market fundamentals unchanged.” His remarks were picked up by some other housebuilders who echoed his comments in a return to reality. The fundamentals of our market and our Deceuninck UK business are very strong. In or out of the EU, our prospects are excellent. We’ve been in Britain nearly 40 years, manufacturing in Calne, Wiltshire. Our successful double-digit growth run began three years ago when I was appointed MD and Rob McGlennon joined as Sales Director. Our goal is getting to No 3 in the UK. Worldwide we are in the top three in all major markets. In the UK, a new marketing strategy put a British face on the Deceuninck brand and we designed #BestInClass products that excel in performance and good looks to make it easy for fabricators and installers to take sales from their competitors and grow. We invested over £2m in the last two years in new products, new extrusion lines, new people – creating jobs for 30% more people in the last three years – and a vast warehouse at Calne to house our 26 coloursfrom-stock colour offer. because we make it easy for fabricators and installers to sell colour to UK homeowners, and to commercial markets where we supply any colour they want. “Deceuninck is not a continental systems company,” explains Bernard Vanderper, Director North West Europe. “It’s a world class, global systems company operating in 75 countries, most of which are outside the EU. The UK, US and Turkey are among our three fastest growing companies. What wins in the UK, US or Turkish markets are each different from other markets, so it’s important that local management set their own strategy and are responsible for achieving it. Deceuninck Group’s role is to invest and hold them to account.” Deceuninck is one of the fastest growing systems company in the UK market. Deceuninck is made in Britain, and every systems company that extrudes here buys raw materials in US dollars/Euro so we are all affected by the exchange rates. The vote on a British Brexit changes nothing. It’s business as usual on our way to No 3. Sincerely Roy Frost, Managing Director Deceuninck UK

Dear Gerald Whatever your views about Brexit, you can expect to see it blamed for things not even remotely connected with it. The ‘spin’ has started. On 11th September 2001, after the World Trade Center towers had been hit in terrorist attacks, Transport Secretary Stephen Byer’s special advisor Jo Moore emailed the department’s press office saying: ‘It’s now a very good day to get out

TRADE NEWS anything we want to bury’. The following day the department announced changes to Councillors’ Allowances. Nearly a month later, Moore’s email was leaked to the press where it provoked a row about the cynical nature of spin. The leaked email appeared the day after Byers had announced the placing of Railtrack in administration. A year later the row flared up again when a leak to the press alleged that Moore had made further attempts to bury bad statistics on the day of a major event. Burying bad news turned out to be standard practice in Tony Blair’s Government. The row led to public apologies, resignations, embarrassment in No 10 and more careful announcements of bad news thereafter. Government learned that using major events to bury bad news can backfire. The public doesn’t like spin, but that doesn’t stop people trying. If exchange rates don’t recover ground lost after the referendum, we’ll all have to pay more for imported material. But blaming Brexit, some door companies immediately jumped the gun and raised prices, and by more than the exchange rate. Did those companies have to raise prices anyway to pay for the thicker GRP skins they needed to pass the new PAS24:2016 test? GRP skins are very costly, and if you have to double the thickness from 1.6/1.8mm to 3.6mm to pass PAS24:2016 your prices will have to go up to compensate.

as usual approach, while carefully monitoring the next few months to see how things play out. I’ve explained to customers that the significant stock DOORCO holds right now in the UK and indeed stock currently in transit to us, has not been affected by any price increases. Neither will we see surcharges on the orders we place in the next few weeks because our Korean partners hold significant stock at pre-Brexit prices. So, as things stand we will not be implementing increases. However, we must be realistic and mindful that this situation could well change in coming months. Everything is uncertain at the moment. So many things are up in the air that could directly affect our industry – the position of Sterling, current and future trading agreements, legislative changes including employment and even testing standards and compliance. But equally, things may even out when Article 50 is finally triggered. The point is nobody knows how things will develop. There’s a great saying here in the North – when in doubt, do nowt. It may sound clichéd, but I believe that’s what every business should be doing at the moment – sitting back, taking a deep breath, monitoring the situation daily and most importantly, maintaining two-way dialogue with customers. This is precisely what DOORCO is doing and will continue to do. Dan Sullivan, Managing Director, DOORCO

Surely it’s better to be up front with customers, rather than bury bad news when they’re distracted? If exchange rates settle at the new level and everyone has to send price increase letters, it will be obvious who has smuggled in an extra price rise to cover their thicker skins. If many suppliers do it, we’ll see a loss of trust in all suppliers, just as we’ve seen with politicians where levels of trust have fallen off a cliff. Surely no one wants that? Sincerely, Gareth Mobley CEO Solidor & Residor Dear Gerald Having spent a lot of time since Brexit talking to customers about its possible implications on our supply chain, I’m writing to set out DOORCO’s stance on the development. Fundamentally, I believe no organisation can afford to knee-jerk to the immediate financial situation, so DOORCO will continue to adopt a business

New Phase For Timber Windows

And Doors Manufacturer With 175-Year Heritage

A timber window and doors manufacturer with a 175-year history is marking a new phase as it invests in a complete rebrand and hires a swathe of new staff members. West Yorkshire-based Patchett Joinery has launched a new logo and website and has responded to growing consumer demand for high quality timber windows and doors by making three senior appointments. Driving forward the rebrand and new website, Gareth O’Brien has joined Patchett Joinery as Sales and Marketing Manager. Beverley Ayres and Janine Roberts have been appointed as Area Managers who will promote the benefits of bespoke timber windows and doors to customers across the North of England.

James Patchett, Managing Director of Patchett Joinery, said: “Our business recently celebrated 175 years so it seemed like a fitting time for us to refresh our brand and demonstrate a more modern outlook. This coincides with the appointment of three new members of staff who will help drive the company forward during this period of high demand for bespoke high quality timber windows and doors.” According to the latest figures

from the British Woodworking Federation, the timber window market grew by 17.1% in 2014 with 739,000 frames manufactured. Palmer Market Research has predicted that this growth will continue until at least 2019.

James Patchett said: “We have invested around £300k in production in the last five years and pride ourselves on using the finest sustainable materials to manufacture bespoke timber windows and doors for our customers. The ‘improve not move’ trend has really driven demand as people are more willing to install high quality products that are built to last while retaining the period look of the property. We also feel our recent increase in domestic sales is partly due to growing demand for environmentally sound products for the home.” Patchett Joinery regularly supplies products for heritage building projects where it is essential that the specification of timber windows and doors are in keeping with the aesthetics and specification of the historic properties. James commented: “We’d like to work on more of these heritage projects in the future as it is a fantastic way for us to help conserve beautiful historic buildings throughout the UK.” www.patchett-joinery.co.uk/

Householders Turn To DHF For Cylinder Locksnap Solution Awareness of the growing threat of lock cylinder snapping is surging amongst trade professionals and the general public alike. Locksmiths, security specialists and householders are increasingly visiting the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) website to find out more about the BSI Kitemarked TS 007 three star solution.

TS 007 was developed by the DHF and the Glass & Glazing Federation. It has the support of BSI and Secured by Design. It is a 3 star security solution. Security to the Kitemarked TS 007 standard can be achieved by either a combination of a TS 007 cylinder (marked with one star and the Kitemark) and TS 007 security door furniture such as a strengthened door handle (marked with two stars and the Kitemark); or a “super cylinder” (marked with three stars and the Kitemark) that successfully resists snap attack without the need to fit additional door hardware. In both cases, the same degree of resistance against cylinder snapping is achieved. There are many benefits to the locksmith and security professional in supplying Kitemarked TS 007 solutions. The locksmiths and security professionals can demonstrate that the products have been independently certified by a third party. Third party certification is a guarantee to the end user/customer that a product has been independently tested by an approved authority other than the manufacturer and installer and then certified. BSI awards the Kitemark once it has seen test reports and has satisfied themselves that the product has been independently and rigorously tested. In addition, BSI audits the lock makers’ manufacturing facilities and their quality management systems. Because the TS 007 three star security rating can be achieved by a combination of cylinder and door handle, as an alternative to cylinder replacement alone, the locksmith and security professional have greater flexibility in meeting the needs of his customer. WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016 39

In the last year, the TS 007 information page on the domestic householder section was the most visited page on the entire DHF website after the main home page. Almost 10,000 visitors accessed the page (www.dhfonline.org.uk/security-ts007-what-protection.aspx) which describes the ultimate door security protection afforded by lock cylinders and handles rated to TS 007. As public knowledge of this type of lock attack grows, locksmiths and security specialists have the assurance that they can provide an answer based around the trusted Kitemark.

I believe that quality is proven through product fit, function & independent testing. Quality is the route to successful accreditation & certification from recognised, impartial industry bodies like BSI, Exova & SBD. Quality is confidence that our hardware will last. Quality defines our standards. It’s in our DNA. - Straff Cooke, Technical Manager, Mila UK

Revolution

Window

Hinge Yale has launched a fully reversible window hinge with a unique patented dual function restrictor. The Yale Revolution Window Hinge, which was first unveiled at FIT Show 2016, is the only hinge in the industry to offer this dual function, and is the ideal choice for reversible residential and commercial upper floor windows. Thanks to its innovative, patented dual closing function, the hinge can be switched between anti-blowback and easy close functions depending on customer requirements – their preferred option can be selected at the point of installation. This offers exclusive benefits to installers as it meets the needs of both private and public sector buildings. The advantage of onsite-configuration also means that installers can carry a smaller amount of van stock.

Paul Atkinson, Sales and Commercial Director for Yale Door and Window Solutions comments: “We’re delighted to launch the Yale Revolution window hinge, which is the only solution in the industry with this dual function. It has been designed to offer maximum versatility and security. “Its user-friendly design allows the window to rotate fully, enabling the homeowner or occupier to easily clean both sides of the glass from within the comfort and safety of the building. This removes the risk of over-stretching, or failing from a ladder when cleaning from the outside.” The hinge has a unique key-lockable safety restrictor, and when opening, the sash release lever must be pressed pass two restricted positions – thus avoiding the risk of the window being opened suddenly.

42 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016

A safety key locks the window in the desired position – outer ventilation, easy clean or safety position – to minimise the risk of injury from falling through the window. The Revolution hinge is available in 27 sizes, ensuring a truly comprehensive range that can accommodate sash heights ranging from 300 mm to 1,780 and can form part of a PAS 24 window set. The newly developed Revolution hinge is made in the UK, and is compatible with all three main window types; PVCu, timber and aluminium. Trojan’s New Athena

Hinge Is Setting The Bar Once More

The Trojan Group has a policy of bringing competitive hardware products to the market, so it’s no surprise that the introduction of their new Athena Door Hinge is attracting so much attention. Tony Chadwick, Group Managing Director of Trojan explains, “As a business we are constantly looking at ways to help our customers and bring the latest innovation in hardware design to the market. The introduction of our New Athena Door Hinge is packed with patented features that makes it a real game-changer in hinge design.” Trojan’s first aim when developing the hinge was to produce something that was exceptionally strong. The Athena Door Hinge has, amongst other strength features, a double knuckle for increased load bearing. The result is that three Athena Door Hinges have a combined carrying weight of 100kg, which makes

The Athena Door Hinge uses full float technology which means visual alignment and easy, accurate and independent 3D adjustment with the door in the closed position, which will make life much easier when installing. It has also been designed so the door can simply be lifted on and lifted off when the hinge is being fitted. Another key feature of the Athena Hinge is the slim aesthetically pleasing design with its unobtrusive appearance. It offers a clean finish because there are no unsightly gaps visible when adjustment has been completed. The hinge is available in White, Black, Brown Oak (UV stabilised), Polished Chrome, PVD Gold, Satin Silver and any RAL colour so will suit any decor. It’s also PAS 24 compatible. The quality of the Athena Door Hinge is evident in its testing results. It has been corrosion tested to the requirements of BS EN 1670 and the painted finishes achieve Grade 5 and the plated finishes Grade 4. The RAL colour option has successfully achieved up to 1000 hours’ neutral salt spray testing and comes with a ten-year surface finish guarantee. The hinge conforms to BS EN 1191 and has been tested to 100,000 cycles. And like all Trojan products, it comes with a ten-year mechanical guarantee too. The product was officially unveiled at this year’s FIT Show where it attracted a great deal of attention for its quality and innovation. Tony concludes, “Our products are designed to give fabricators and installers what they need.” www.trojangroup.com

GLASS & GLAZING

Guardian® Glass Delivers Superior Thermal Insulation And Solar Control In ‘High Level’ Research Project Guardian Glass in Europe, a leading manufacturer of high performance architectural glass and a key supplier to the building industry, has demonstrated the superior performance of its fenestration glass products in an ambitious Alpine shelter project in Slovenia. The project was initiated by OFIS Architects in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to help research the impact of extreme weather conditions on different types of materials and construction techniques. The modern shelter was designed in the fall of 2015 in the studio ‘Habitation in Extreme Environments’ at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Chosen from a number of designs submitted by the architecture students, the proposal of Katie McDonald, Erin Pellegrino and Frederick Kim was further developed. The fully finished construction is now located high on Skuta Mountain in the Slovenian Alps, where weather conditions are extreme and harsh. Among the projects requirements was that the bivouac needed to provide a safe, comfortable environment for up to eight people. The initiators of the project, Špela Videčnik and Rok Oman, co-founders of OFIS Architects, worked with London-based structural engineers AKT II Ltd. and Rieder eco skin to refine the project. For the fenestration they selected Guardian Glass as a key partner, 46 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016

because the company is among the most experienced and technically skilled glass providers in the world. Bivak pod SkutoWith the chosen site located more than 2,000 metres above sea level, the tempered safety glass used in the shelter needed to be able to withstand a design wind load estimated at 2,3 kN/m2, more than double than required for high-rise buildings in major cities. The glass also needed to provide superior thermal insulation and solar control performance, good safety and security, and be able to cope with the stresses of very high elevations and extreme temperatures. Guardian’s experts worked with OFIS and AKT to come up with the optimum window materials and construction. During the process they had to take into account key factors such as thermal insulation and solar control, as well as other functional considerations, such as appearance and clarity of vision. Triple glazing was installed with a U-value of 0,5 W/ m2K and a solar factor of 33%, to reach an optimum energy balance all year round. The primary coated glass chosen was Guardian’s spectrally selective SunGuard® SuperNeutral® 70/37 glass on the outer pane, combined with ClimaGuard® Premium T low-emissivity glass on the inner pane, resulting in

59% visible light transmission in the final triple glazing configuration, which is considered unusually high given the very low solar factor. Key benefits of the glass are its neutral appearance so the bivouac blends in as much as possible with the nature around it, low reflection outside for the best possible view in, and low reflection inside allowing occupants to enjoy the surrounding views both during day and night. “We wanted you to feel that you were still very much one with the landscape. Guardian Glass was a huge help in enabling us to realise this.” said Erin Pellegrino, one of the student designers at Harvard University. Bivak pod SkutoDomen Komac, European Integrator Manager for Guardian Glass said: “Despite its relatively small size, this project was no less demanding than any large building project. Maintaining a comfortable and safe indoor environment was a challenge, especially in these extreme conditions. Thanks to our broad product range, combined with the know-how of our experienced technical team, Guardian Glass was able to fulfil all the criteria of this high profile project.” www.guardian.com/europe/GuardianGlass. Guardian Clarity™ Glass To Help Showcase The British Museum’s First Major Exhibition Of Underwater Archaeology The British Museum will this year provide the UK public with an up-close look at a stunning collection of artifacts discovered beneath the Mediterranean seabed. The BP exhibition Sunken cities: Egypt’s lost worlds represents the Museum’s first large-scale exhibition of underwater discoveries and a number of objects will be displayed in special cases made using high-technology glass from Guardian Glass, a leading global supplier of high-quality commercial, residential and interior glass products. Guardian’s double-sided, anti-reflective Guardian Clarity™ glass was selected for use in the display cases, to provide the public with the best possible viewing experience while also offering protection and security for the exhibition’s 300 objects.

The underwater objects come from the site of two lost Egyptian cities submerged several metres beneath the seabed at the mouth of the Canopic branch of the River Nile for more than a thousand years. Astonishingly well preserved by the underwater setting, the recovered objects include pristine monumental statues, fine metalware and gold jewellery. The exhibition is supplemented by important loans from Egyptian museums rarely seen before outside Egypt and a select group of objects from the British Museum’s own collection. The nonprofit European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (or IEASM, for Institut Européen d’Archéologie Sous-Marine), in collaboration with the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, undertook the expeditions to uncover the

artifacts. Guardian worked closely with the institute in staging this traveling exhibition, with a view to enhancing the display of these precious objects, while also providing them with maximum protection. Overall, some 200 square meters of Clarity specialty glass is being used in the exhibition. Guardian Clarity is created using the most advanced magnetron sputtering glass coating technology. Its residual reflection colour is a soft neutral blue, which, in combination with Guardian UltraClear™ substrate, allows it to provide maximum transparency while minimising unwanted reflection and glare. La Cité Du Vin: Guardian High Performance Glass Delivers

Vibrant Highlight For New French Wine Centre Nine hundred panels with gold-coloured Guardian SunGuard® Solar Gold 20 and Guardian UltraClearTM glass, help to create a stunning highlight for France’s latest landmark building. La Cité du Vin is a new cultural centre in Bordeaux, France, which offers a unique setting in which visitors can learn about wine, its history and influence on civilisation through a range of tours, exhibits and spectacular multimedia presentations. An observation deck on the top of the 55 metre high tower offers a 360° view of the city and the surrounding vineyards. The building itself was designed by Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières of XTU Architects and makes a strong architectural statement thanks to its bold curves and overall shape which are intended to evoke wine’s soul and liquid nature: seamless roundness,

to help find the right solution for this high visibility project. They turned to Guardian Glass in Europe, a leading manufacturer of high- performance architectural glass. Guardian’s experience and technical support proved to be invaluable. “Choosing the glass was a long process,” says Coveris. “It was vital to select the right products that were best suited, both technically and aesthetically. We had to prove the feasibility of many aspects, from the choice of coating to ensuring that the glass could be distorted or curved outwards. Throughout this process there was a very good cooperation with Guardian and the architects.”

The architects selected French cladding company Coveris

Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières from XTU Architects agree: “The design brief required us to find glass with gold reflections. We examined various types of glass, and then we carried out screen printing tests. The Guardian® glass delivered the best results and the most modern aspect.” Two types of glass were selected: Guardian SunGuard Solar Gold 20

GLASS & GLAZING and Guardian UltraClear. SunGuard Solar Gold 20 is the preferred choice of many architects and designers. Its gold-coloured coating is applied to Guardian ExtraClear® float glass. This has advantages when compared to body tinted glass. Not only does it offer high performance solar control; but also thanks to a good colour rendering index, the colours that can be seen from the inside to the outside of the building are very close to what they are in reality.

High Performance

Window And Roof Glass,

Just Got Better!

Compared to traditional glass, Guardian UltraClear low-iron glass offers high light transmission and greater colour neutrality, letting ‘true’ daylight in to provide an enhanced feeling of space and light. For the building’s main tower, glass was used to create a separate skin which envelopes the structure, while maximising its aesthetics. In total around 900 individual glass panels were used, some being screen printed with 20 different patterns. All panels are different with maximum sizes of 5.1m x 1.5m. There are three types of panels: monolithic, laminated and triple laminated. The latter type with SunGuard Solar Gold 20 coating applied. All panels were individually fixed on site and guided into place onto 4500 separate fixing attachments from 50mm to 270mm high. The fixing system had to be programmed using special software, because of the building’s specific geometry. The final glass skin covers 2700 square metres. The screen printing which provides such a stunning effect involved 20 different patterns each applied individually onto the panels. All this contributed to the remarkable way in which both SunGuard Solar Gold and UltraClear are used to magnify the architecture and its appearance. In the words of XTU Architects: “We are delighted with the final result because we think we found the very best solution.” www.guardian.com

Intensive Brightness And Easy Maintenance

OKALUX Functional

Glass With LED

OKALUX GmbH Printed contour lines create glowing graphical designs with the LED’s.

Just in time for the glasstec 2016, insulating glass producer OKALUX is launching a glazing product featuring innovative coating and integrated LEDs. OKALUX Functional Glass with LED creates fascinating light accents and opens up numerous possibilities of design. An absolute novelty is the position of the light sourc-

es. The LEDs are not permanently assembled into the insulating glass or sealant, but are integrated, for example, in the frame system after the window has been mounted to enable easy access. This way, easy maintenance is guaranteed and designers are given remarkable freedom regarding the choice of colour, structure or decor. The LEDs transmit the light over the glass edge in the laminated pane. In this way, the entire glass pane glows evenly in the desired hues. In addition, the functional glass also offers the possibility to create accents with graphic elements. A newly developed printing colour ensures enormous brilliance and optimal color rendering. This especially enhances logo prints during nighttime. The system can be used in a variety of ways: as for example in façades, as signage and advertising space, as well as in room dividers, partition walls or as actual illuminating elements. Even business-related concepts of design can be transposed consistently from the interior through to the façade thereby creating – in the spirit of Corporate Architecture – high recognition value. The dimensions are 3.00 x 1.50 m, larger glass sizes can be customised. The LED technology can be applied in mono as well as double and triple pane insulating glazing. You can view an example of the OKALUX functional glass with LED at the “glass technology live” special show at the glasstec 2016 fair in Duesseldorf, Hall 11. www.okalux.com

“Glass House” Trend

Surging, Says Natural Light Specialist LB Roof Windows

The use of large glass areas as part of home extensions, renovations, and residential new-builds is surging, fuelled by the continuing popularity of natural light, says roof glazing supplier, LB Roof Windows. Director Adrian Cooper notes that advances in roof window technology now mean virtually any area of a property that was previously dark and unwelcoming can now be adapted to maximise the intake of natural light. “In recent years, we’ve seen a massive upswing in the popularity of natural light products,” commented Adrian. “That’s coincided with consumers gaining a much greater awareness of psychological, emotional, and broader health benefits that natural light can bring – and now, inspired by shows like Grand Designs, they’re looking for stylish, effective products that can help bring more natural light into

their everyday lives.

“The desire for bright, ‘transparent’ homes that dissolve the traditional boundaries between the interior and the exterior is seeing end-users embellish new kitchens, extensions and other areas with high-performance roof lanterns, roof windows and skylights. As specialists in natural light, LB Roof Windows, also trading as LB Supplies, are well positioned to help builders and installers take advantage of this continuing trend,” said Adrian. The company is a nationwide supplier of Atlas Roof Lanterns. The strongest, slimmest aluminium roof lantern system on the market today, the Atlas range delivers minimal profile and maximum glass, and is available in sizes from 1.25m to 2.5m in width. With u-values as low as 1.5, Atlas Roof Lanterns are twice as thermally efficient as their

nearest competitor, and can be made even more so by upgrading to 40mm triple glazing. “Our Atlas Contemporary and Regular Roof Lanterns are available on very quick lead times – 5 days from order to delivery – and our support team is always on hand to help with technical information and advice,” said Adrian. In addition to Roof Lanterns, LB Roof Windows offers a whole range of other products to help builders and installers capitalise on the current trend for natural light. The company is a leading provider of Velux, Dakea and Aurora Roof Windows – the latter being available in the UK solely through LB Roof Windows – as well as the Coxdome flat roof domes, and Sunsquare flat roof skylights. “What’s more, all our roof windows and other roof glazing solutions are available from stock for next day delivery anywhere in the UK, and can be ordered online via www.lbroofwindows.co.uk, at very competitive prices,” concluded Adrian. www.lbroofwindows.co.uk

Jack Aluminium realized early on that its customers would need a suite of high usage door options to meet both Document Q and Secured by Design requirements. Achieving SBD

with a thermally approved door also ensures that fabricators can give architects and clients the higher energy efficiency demanding on new and refurbishment projects.

At the heart of the Jack Aluminium range is its successful TD68 thermal door system, the Jack Door, which offers the design options and durability needed for high traffic usage. It recently launched its largest SBD-ready thermal door, which features 1200 x 2400mm leaf, enabling one-metre clearance for wheelchair access, particularly beneficial for schools and

The TD68 is also the basis for the TD68 Pivot Anti-Panic door and Mag Lock door, reflecting Jack Aluminium’s ability to deliver solutions for specific customer requirements. The Anti-Panic door is designed to prevent the vulnerability which many panic and emergency doors face. With potential forced entry attempts in mind, the door includes; a striker plate which supports the lock when under attack, internal and external locking capabilities to secure the door from

“We know that SBD doors are increasingly become specified as standard,” explains Jeff Pearson, Sales Director at Jack Aluminum. “This demand covers a number of commercial spaces, so it’s important that we provide a range of solutions to suit the varying needs of customers.” Hospitals, schools, shops and places of work, all require doors which offer security and reliability. The SBD initiative aims to reduce the risk and fear of crime by providing practical defense against common crime trends. The group works with the glazing industry to ensure products can demonstrate effectiveness in preventing crime. PAS24 is the minimum door standard required for SBD compliance. “Customers need to feel safe in the knowledge that our solutions offer security and durability. This is why we believe in the importance of testing all parts of our designs to make sure our range is PAS24 approved and ready for SBD,” added Pearson. Jack Aluminum has been committed to testing its door systems over a number of years to achieve PAS24 approval, as well as its sister standard BS:EN 6375 that measures a door’s durability. A North-Wales based Architect called in the services of PatioMaster North West recently, when re-modelling his home. The project, a modern garden room extension with an atrium roof light, was at the home of Matthew Jones, who owns his own Architects Practice. PatioMaster North West, one of PatioMaster’s nine dealers across the UK and Ireland, fabricated the 4 pane patio doors in slate grey on white sliding doors, while local installer company, A55 Plastics, completed the installation and as homeowner Matthew explains, the results are stunning: “We are really pleased with the finished results, the doors met all our expectations in terms of fit, finish and quality and the project was completed on time and within budget; one of the reasons we choose PatioMaster North West in the first place.” patiomaster doors inside day shotPatioMaster North West fits doors into any home and style of building; another reason why Matthew choose the company: “Our main aim with the re-model was to let as

much light in to the room as possible, and give us optimal views out to the garden with the maximum opening for nice days. We went for 2.4m high floor to window doors to achieve a maximum view of the sky, and the grey exterior gives the look of aluminium and the white inside lends a clean, minimal look and complements the property perfectly.” Installers A55 Plastics have been installing new plastics, windows and conservatories to customers across North Wales for 20 years. Mark Leach explains: “The installation took about half a day, and we were recommended to the homeowner via a mutual friend who we had also done some installation work for.” PatioMaster offers a comprehensive support package to its fabricators, and by working through a small network of local craftsmen, also offers a dedicated and local service for homeowners. Spectus has issued a direct challenge to aluminium windows in high-rise with the launch of its Flush Tilt & Turn PVC-U system, that has a similar look to the metal but with significant benefits including thermal performance and cost. With U-Values as low as 0.8 W/ m2K (WER A++) achievable, window openings up to 1,450mm wide X 2,300mm high, and many other unique features, the Spectus Flush Tilt & Turn is ideal for new-build apartments, housing, hotels, health education and public buildings, where aluminium or composites might otherwise have been first choice.

Spectus

Challenges Aluminium With New PVC-U Flush Tilt & Turn

Its sleek external flush styling and square edge appearance gives it a close visual match to aluminium, especially with the smooth grey foiled finish on grey base as a stock option, but the profile also benefits from Spectus’s extensive range of 28 other foils – one of the widest ranges of any PVC-U system. As well as the obvious cost saving of PVC-U over aluminium, the Spectus Flush Tilt & Turn’s exceptional thermal performance can be achieved with Argon-filled triple glazed units, rather than expensive Krypton-filled units, and without insulation in the profile or expensive special reinforcements. This is due not only to its six-chamber sash and five-chamber outer frame but also Spectus’s unique Aeroframe thermal wall technology, which has proven to provide greater thermal performance through its complex ‘thermal barrier’ design.

includes a unique anti-switch barrier that prevents accidental movement between the tilt and the turn functions. Also, anti-slam is fitted as standard and the gearing is concealed for improved aesthetics. Advanced security features, including increased security around the hinges, also mean the system is Secured by Design and BES6001 accredited

Further weather-proofing is achieved by a high performance centre seal system, with an optional third weather seal as an additional air and water barrier. The weather rating is tested to BS6375-1:2009.

Spectus Technical Director Martin Althorpe said: “A growing number of developers and specifiers are looking at the significant benefits that PVC-U can offer over aluminium and they will find all those benefits and more in the Spectus Flush Tilt & Turn, as well as the choice of the visual match with smooth RAL 7016 or any other of our wide range of finishes.”

Martin Althorpe concluded: “We have looked very carefully at what developers and specifiers want from a system, either PVC-U or aluminium. Glassolutions’ Acoustic Glazing Spec Paves Way For Loud And Clear Sales Opportunities GLASSOLUTIONS’ collaboration with CMS Window Systems to develop the UK’s first Quiet-Mark approved sound insulated PVCu window could mark a step change in how the window and door industry markets its products to homeowners and tenants. The development of the CMS Silent-Therm Window means householders can for the first time in Britain be assured of a window which minimises noise disturbance. The independent testing required to meet the Quiet-Mark standard is rigorous, which is why it is adopted and trusted by major brands and market leaders such as Dyson, John Lewis and Samsung. The window combines a well-designed PVCu profile with a specialist noise control IGU specification to deliver a window which significantly outperforms standard windows in its ability to reduce external sounds. New Slim Meeting Rail Makes The Ultimate Rose Even

More Authentic Roseview Windows have taken their acclaimed Ultimate Rose one step further, launching an upgraded model that’s even more faithful to the classic timber originals that inspired its design. Released in 2013 as part of Roseview’s much-celebrated Rose Collection, the original Ultimate Rose broke new ground with its forensic attention to detail, replicating iconic timber features like putty lines, full mechanical joints and run-through sash horns. Pushing the boundaries of what many had thought

possible with uPVC, the Ultimate Rose went on to win a coveted G-Award in 2013. It’s since been cleared for use in dozens of conservation areas. The motivation behind designing a new and improved Ultimate Rose was simple, as Roseview marketing manager Mike Bygrave explains: “We wanted to make it even better. It’s not a revolutionary transformation – we’ve always seen product development as a continuous process of constant, gradual evolution, rather than a series of big leaps and bounds. But we’ve zeroed in on the fine details – and although the chang-

es we’ve made may sound like minor tweaks, the finished article is remarkable.” “We’ve developed our own meeting rail profile – getting rid of the tell-tale interlock line that immediately shows anyone in the know that a product isn’t timber. At the same time, we’ve cut the meeting rail depth by 9.5mm. It was incredibly slim as it was, but now, at just 35mm, it’s the slimmest on the market. The overall result is incredible – if you place an Ultimate Rose alongside a timber vertical-sliding sash window, you’d struggle to tell the difference.” www.roseview.co.uk

COLOURS & PAINTS

REHAU is adding three new finishes to its range of foiled profiles, strengthening its claim to offer the most complete colour package in the industry. Windsor, Silver Birch and Smooth Basalt Grey are being added to the REHAU TOTAL70 range, bringing the total number of colours and finishes available to 24. Crucially, like the rest of REHAU’s foiled profiles, these are available in low minimum order quantities and with consistently reliable lead times, giving fabricators the flexibility they want to be able to take advantage of sales opportunities in the booming coloured PVC-U sector. Colour swatches featuring the new additions to the range will be on their way to REHAU customers shortly, along with a new ordering guide. This includes a user-friendly matrix showing all of the standard and non-standard colour options available across all of REHAU’s profiles and ancillaries to make ordering even quicker and easier.

REHAU

Adds More New Foils To Its Range The three new finishes have been introduced as a result of detailed market analysis carried out by REHAU’s Product Management team. Newly appointed Product Assistant Meg Durrell, who is responsible for tracking sales and supporting customers buying foiled profiles, said: “After traditional woodgrains, our grey foils remain our most popular options by far – in fact, our combined sales of smooth and grained Anthracite Grey profile last year easily outstripped both Mahogany and Golden Oak. “The market is always looking for the next new differentiator though and we’ve identified the taupe coloured Windsor and the grey tinted Silver Birch as the ones to help our customers win new retail sales.

“Alongside Anthracite Grey, we already offer Slate Grey in a smooth finish, so Smooth Basalt Grey is an obvious addition for the commercial sector where it’s already a popular colour option.” REHAU’s Marketing and Technical Director Gareth Jones pointed out that REHAU’s strength in this sector is not simply down to the breadth of its range. He added: “REHAU is focused on offering a clearly defined range of colours from stock, with a clear competitive pricing strategy and with consistent and reliable lead times. “The feedback we get from customers is that this strikes just the right balance between offering the optimum level of choice without compromising on either prices or logistics.” www.rehau.uk

COLOURS & PAINTS

Modplan Opens Up A World Of Colour

VEKA trade fabricator Modplan’s dedicated paint plant opened in 2014 and sales of the manufacturer’s coloured products have increased rapidly since then. The company recently reported an increase in sales of its coloured products both in paint finish and woodgrain. Heidi Sachs, Modplan’s Managing Director, said: “Having our own dedicated paint plant means we have rapid turnaround times on our coloured products. We have a maximum lead time of two to three weeks on all coloured products. Feedback from our customers tells us that this has made colour a lot

more accessible and helped them add value to their contracts more easily.” Modplan’s paint plant opens up a world of colour for installers. Frames can be painted in any RAL colour and a wide range of finishes is also available, including woodgrain effects. This means any products not yet available in a foiled finish can be spray painted to match foiled items, creating a streamlined and complete look across multiple products. Modplan also offers an all-over colour solution because as well as spraying the interior and exterior frames, the areas that are visible when the window is open are also sprayed, something that gives a much more sophisticated result. Aside from wanting to make colour more accessible by improving turnaround times, the other reason Modplan opened a dedicated paint plant was to be able to offer unparalleled quality in this area. The fabricator uses technology, which forms a molecular cross bond with the plastic surface for a longer lasting finish, unlike most other paints for plastics which stick to the substrate. Heidi comments: “Bringing colour in-house and using state-of-the-art processes means we can guarantee the colour and quality first time every time and we are not relying on any third parties. It’s something our customers really value.” Modplan is renowned in the industry for its partnership approach that helps its customers to grow their businesses. The company’s dedicated paint plant was opened to help its customers add value to their sales. And the recent sales increase in painted products, proves it’s doing exactly that. www.modplan.co.uk

CMK Joins Qualicoat UK & Ireland

Membership of Qualicoat continues to grow and a further substantial Powder Coater in the Midlands has joined the Association.

CMK (Treatments) Limited, based in Oldbury, commenced trading in 1974 and from that time has specialised in the Polyester Powder Coating of Architectural Aluminium. CMK also provide coating services to a wide range of clients from small family run window companies up to some of the largest commercial fabricators in the UK.

Bruce Gardner, CMK Managing Director, comments on their recent membership decision: “When we installed our new plant some seven years ago, it was supplied to meet the Qualicoat Standard as we always intended to join Qualicoat. With legislative changes and the growth of Qualicoat in the UK and overseas, we believe the time is now right to become fully involved with the Association. We have undergone all the inspections from Qualicoat’s Independent Testing House, IFO, and we are proud to become an approved Qualicoat licence holder.” Fur-

COLOURS & PAINTS TruFrame has expanded the number of foiled finishes from stock on 5 and 7 day lead times, as they look to capitalise on the shift in consumer demand from matt white windows and doors to the new rich woodgrains and striking colour options. With typical TruFrame efficiency, there is now a 5-day lead time for rosewood, rosewood on white, golden oak, golden oak on white, black foil on white and now anthracite grey on white. To supplement the short-lead time of these finishes there is also a 7-day lead time for white, cream, black, ivory cream, Irish oak and chartwell green on white. There are also a number of special colours and woodgrains that are available on an extended lead time and throughout the Liniar range, all uPVC profiles are covered by a comprehensive 10 year warranty. Now consistently manufacturing over 3,500 frames each and every week, there’s also the added benefit of TruFrame’s unique 4-step hand finishing process that’s become so popular with both sales and installation teams. The recent launch of the fully mechanically jointed Refine window has also set new standards in terms of frame quality and with a 70mm front to back dimension, requires

ON SITE More than 500 PVC-U windows were chosen for an 11-storey residential new-build, X1 The Exchange, close to the prestigious Media City in Salford Quays after the developer was presented with specification and costings that showed the material to be an economic alternative to the aluminium frames originally specified. The windows, as well as 100 doors, were made and installed by Spectus Approved Window Contractor Jade Windows using the Spectus Elite 70 bevelled system with 8.8mm laminated acoustic glass and additional EPDM seal. An untextured Anthracite grey (RAL 7016) foil was specified by planners as a close visual match when replacing aluminium, as Jade’s Ryan Fozard explained: “It is happening more and more that a client may change to PVC-U when they are shown the performance against the cost, so of course it is important to have a visual match as well, whether it is at the request of the client, the architect or planning authorities.”

GLASSOLUTIONS Brings Together Comfort And

Sustainability At Winnersh Triangle Offices

UK designer, manufacturer and installer of commercial glazing products GLASSOLUTIONS has given a new multi-occupancy office block at a Thames Valley business park a sustainable edge, with the company’s installation of solar control curtain walling providing exceptional thermal efficiency for the building. Spanning 85 acres in the heart of the Thames Valley, the Winnersh Triangle business park provides business and industrial space for a diverse variety of enterprises, and is home to over 50 businesses, including Virgin Media, Bang & Olufsen, and Intel. GLASSOLUTIONS was contracted to manufacture and install 3400m2 of curtain-wall façade for a new multi-occupancy office block at the Winnersh Triangle site. Sustainability and efficiency are at the core of the Winnersh Triangle’s

ethos, so this needed to be factored into the planning process: solar control glass was desired, and the client’s requirements for air tightness were particularly exacting. To adhere to Winnersh Triangle’s exacting sustainability specifications, GLASSOLUTIONS employed a variety of different elements to maximise the efficiency of the building’s envelope. Schueco FW60+ and FW60+ SG curtain walling systems were installed: with a thermal rating of 1.5w/m2k, these were the ideal choice to aid internal climate control. 6mm SGG COOL-LITE SKN174 panes were used for the outer glazing, paired with a 16mm argon warm edge spacer bar to reduce thermal bridging. Additionally, a distinctive and complex brise soleil, designed by EPR Architects, was engineered and

installed by GLASSOLUTIONS to manage the solar gain of the facade, the loads of which were carried entirely by the curtain wall system. Working with main contractor Wates and London based EPR Architects, work progressed swiftly and the installation was completed in November 2015. The brief outlined at the beginning of the project was met and surpassed: the exceptional solar control properties of the building’s glazing specification have been extremely effective at reducing glare, controlling heat transmission, and minimising the need for air conditioning inside the building. Paul Rose, Commercial Manager at GLASSOLUTIONS, said: “GLASSOLUTIONS’ installation at Winnersh Triangle has been highly successful. With Wates and EPR, we’ve helped create an office space which will be comfortable for its occupants and kinder to the environment, as well as being less expensive to heat and cool. The Winnersh Triangle business park places a strong focus on creating sustainable, energy-efficient accommodation for its tenants – it’s great to be involved in a project which will make a positive impact in so many ways.” GLASSOLUTIONS’ glazing installation has provided more than solar control for the Winnersh Triangle building’s sustainability credentials: the glazing installation recently achieved an Air Tightness Rating of 2.1m3/hr/m2, exceeding the very tight requirement of 3m3/hr/m2. This has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the contractors and architects involved: Wates Project Manager Darren Grinham described the project as an “excellent delivery”, adding that “the air test results are very good, and one we should all be very proud of.” For more information, visit www.glassolutions.co.uk.

It’s a testament to the passion and commitment of

Longleat Safari Park is one of the UK’s biggest and most successful tourist attractions, and it’s been an honour and a privilege to play a part in helping it gear up for the future. TWR Group Chooses Emmegi Machines For Second Factory The TWR Group has chosen a complete package of Emmegi machinery for its brand new factory in Peterlee, County Durham which is set to open this summer.

new machinery will take pride of place in our soon to be opened 25,000 sq ft factory. This will allow us to continue offering an unrivalled service and great products to our loyal installer base.”

The company has purchased a new Phantomatic X6 four axis machining centre, a Precision TS2 electronic twin head saw and a taping machine, end miller, crimper and tables for its second factory, where it will be exclusively manufacturing bi-fold doors.

TWR plans to add Synseal’s new WarmCore aluminium clad profile system to its portfolio of bifold doors, and the Phantomatic X6 is the perfect machine for this because it has a fourth axis with a rotating head which can carry out the specialist routing required on WarmCore at 45°.

These are the first Emmegi machines supplied to The TWR Group which has ambitions to become the UK’s leading medium sized fabricator in aluminium.

The X6 has already been chosen by a number of WarmCore fabricators and is an increasingly popular machining centre with a 7.7m work area which can handle large volumes of work flow.

Managing Director Terry Richardson chose Emmegi because he wanted a package of machines which would give his new factory the state of the art manufacturing capability to set it apart from the competition, and which would also effectively future proof his operation so that it can easily increase capacity.

The Precision TS2 electronic twin-head saw with front blade offers angled cutting to 45° inwards and 15° outwards and can cut to 280 positions per degree. A patented innovation by Emmegi achieves both virtual rotation of the cutting units on the saw and absolute rigidity so that positioning and profile blocking are always accurate.

The Emmegi machines are renowned for their quality and performance, but the service from the dedicated UK team was also an important factor in the buying decision. Terry Richardson said: “We’re delighted to have purchased the new machinery from Emmegi and the service they have given us has been first class. The

Terry Richardson believes that his decision to use just one supplier for all of the machines makes perfect sense. He adds: “Emmegi made the whole process very straightforward and cost effective. Village Glass Agrees Deal For New Forel Vertical Cutting Line Trade fabricator and home of the Genesis product brand, Bison Frames, has recently invested heavily in the ground-breaking Graf Synergy SL4FF EVO machine that will help it continue to deliver excellence in product manufacture. Mark Tetley, Bison’s Director said: “Quality is the cornerstone of everything that we do and we continuously invest in our business to ensure that we deliver. This latest six figure investment will make us one of the few fabricators in the UK to be using this technology as we develop our existing products and introduce the full WarmCore product range.” Mark goes on to say that Bison will be using the new machinery to manufacture the full WarmCore, aluminium product range. Early this year, Bison introduced the WarmCore Bifold door, which brings the concept of warm aluminium to the market for the first time. The addition of the WarmCore window range including Casement, Flush Sash and Tilt/Turn gives Bison a compelling product portfolio. The SL4FF EVO brings a wealth of advantages. It delivers a zip weld rather than a straight corner weld, which increases corner strength. The profile is routed at almost the same time as being welded. The rotating electro spindle moves from 0° to 180°so it can machine on five sides of a profile section including the profile edge. The electronic twin-head Classic Star saw had been used by Aluhaus’ new Operations Manager Adrian Locker in previous roles and he had been impressed with its consistent precision and reliability. Before ordering the new machines, the Aluhaus team visited several other fabricators’ factories where they were already in operation, and the feedback they had was very positive – not just about the machines, but about the level of support and technical back up available from Emmegi (UK). Pulling Out The Stops, Roto Hold Its UK Press Day Pulling together trade publications from across the industry, German manufacturer Roto held its first of many press days in the UK on 13th June at the exclusive Ricoh Arena, Coventry.

about from its bi-annual customer survey. They have identified customers require products which are easy to fabricate and install and offer a less complicated way of selling to the general public.

The day and evening event, which kicked off with an introduction from Western European Managing Director, Mike Piqeur, and saw editors attending from many of the industry’s top named trade magazines, alongside Roto’s sales and technical UK and European based staff.

‘Me too’ products are not an option for Roto, and Mike explained how they have been investing to develop products which meet industry and production standards, not just now but also for the future, commenting:

Mike went on to advise the press of the changes that had taken place in the UK in recent years up to the present day and introduced Vese Nenye, newly appointed Business Development Manager for the UK and Ireland. He commented on Vese’s role to enhance and promote the company’s new and existing range of products and to implement strategic service level agreements with all its network of dealer partners. Mike also talked about the company’s global presence and how the UK market is still an exciting proposition for Roto in-terms of new product development and the introduction of the recently acquired PN business and its products to the company’s range. Recognising that European and other Global markets require different products, Roto has looked at a full range of UK specific products, which set to add value to the fabricator and installer, this has come 82 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016

Testing and approval has taken place of many of our new products for example our new Inowa patio door product, to achieve the upcoming European Commission’s ZEBRA2020. “Zebra2020 focuses on tracking the market transitions to nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (nZEBs) to derive recommendations and strategies for the building industry and policy makers and accelerate the market uptake of nZEBs. “The guidelines associated with this policy form the heart of Roto’s new and existing product development, as we believe whatever happens across the globe, the push towards building sustainable homes will continue to grow and we want our products and our customers to be ready,” explains Mike. The day continued with a presentation on one of

MARKETING Roto’s not-so high-profiled range of products; the DST roof window. Sales director, Simon Cox who is based solely in the UK, talked the press through the business and how the division of the company had been in the UK for the last 8 years promoting the system to installers across the fenestration, building and commercial specification market. Roto’s Roof windows are designed to give the user maximum comfort and ease of access, without compromising or obscuring their view. The windows are delivered into the market ready to be installed. Sold through merchants and distributors throughout the UK, Roto DST offer customers full training for the installation and maintenance of the windows, even going out and helping to install on the customer first fitting. With an easy to use and unique ‘Click’ system around the flashing, the windows can also be fitted by just one person. The most popular of designs from the range comprises of a top-hung and a top third pivot window. Both have their own unique benefits to the end-user dependent on their desired choice. Simon commented: “Our roof windows are produced in our award winning factories in Germany, carefully assembled to the highest level of performance and quality. Because of their ‘Intelligent, but Simple’ fit design, they are a useful addition for installers to add to their product of portfolio. “We offer a variety of support to our customers; advice on fitting, training, specifying the window and a ream of internal technical data through our technical support team. The products can add a new dimension to a homeowner’s property, and as more and more the market shifts to fitting conservatories with solid roofs and roof extension, the Roto roof window is a very good and competitive product to have in an installers tool box of products.” The day’s presentation finished off with the demonstration of a number of the company’s new products, including Fastio – an automatic opening door system, with low threshold access and useful for domestic and multi-entrance applications, a range of hardware products from the newly acquired PN – including hinges and tilt and turn hardware and of course a display of the Roto roof window designs, styles and colours. At the close of the day, all staff and Editors were treated to good old fashioned German hospitality and entertained with a meal, wine and access to the Ricoh’s exclusive on site Casino. www.roto.co.uk/en

MARKETING Thermoseal Group, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of warm edge spacers and supplier of over 1,500 insulated glass (IG) components has launched a public video to showcase the advantages of its highest performance Thermobar and Thermoflex warm edge spacers to homeowners.

Watch the New ‘Warm Comfortable Home’ Video from

Thermoseal Group

Introducing the benefits of Thermobar and Thermoflex warm edge spacers, the video commences within a warm comfortable home with a family calculating their energy bills. It then showcases Thermobar and Thermoflex by zooming into a simulated home and through clever graphics it deconstructs a window down to the spacer bar within the glazing unit. Quoting figures such as “Up to 80% of energy loss through a window occurs at its edge” and “Warm edge glazing is up to 65% warmer at the edge than traditional windows” the video tells homeowners about the real issues relating to poorly insulated windows and how Thermobar and Thermoflex help to minimise the energy loss through the edge of window glazing to keep the heat in or out of a building as required. Warm Edge spacers also help to minimise condensation and mould. Thermobar Warm Edge Spacer is a rigid tube spacer system made with engineering plastic with a gas barrier tape. It has a thermal conductivity value of 0.14W/mK and achieves a Passive House rating of phA for Arctic Climates (phA+ with hot melt secondary sealant). Thermoflex Warm Edge Spacer is a flexible rubber spacer system with gas barrier tape. Its value is 0.135W/mK and similarly achieves a phA+ rating. Thermoseal Group’s marketing manager, Samantha Hill tells us: “We are delighted to finally

MARKETING weight, allowing for narrow, more aesthetically pleasing frames and better sightlines. It is extremely low maintenance and tends to come with longer guarantees, as it is resilient to flexing, expanding or contracting. How do I ensure my windows are thermally efficient?

A Buyer’s Guide

To Windows

If you are considering replacing your current windows or designing a new home, here are 10 tips from Neil Ginger, CEO of Origin, a UK specialist manufacturer of bi-folding doors and windows, to help you choose the right window for your property, things to look out for and the questions to ask. What type of window do I need? Selecting the right window for your home can be a daunting task given all the styles available. One of the easiest ways to choose is to decide upon the main function required – to let in more light, provide a view, add ventilation or to enhance the space within a room – this will enable you to choose which type you need, whether it’s a casement, bay or gable window, or perhaps a roof-light for extra light, or in fact a French Door to

serve as an entrance.

What type of frame will suit my style of home? Frame strength and durability are important factors to consider when investing in a window system. uPVC – is usually the cheaper option and has thicker sightlines than aluminium, due to the material not being as innately strong, meaning less glass and subsequently, less light. Timber - can look great in certain types of property and offers a warm feel, but like uPVC, tends to have wide sightlines, and requires regular maintenance to keep it looking good and working well, especially when in direct sunlight. Aluminium - offers the right combination of strength and

86 WINDOW NEWS JULY AUGUST 2016

The best indicators of thermal efficiency are U-Values. U-Values show the amount of heat lost in watts (W) per square metre of material, so the lower the number, the better the thermal efficiency. For windows, the U-Values in the UK must be 1.6 W/(m2K) for replacements and up to 2.0 W/(m2K) for new builds and extensions. Also enquire about additional upgrades to increase thermal performance. For example, Origin offers a ground-breaking material, Aerogel, which is exclusive to Origin and boosts the window’s thermal efficiency, making it capable of achieving a U-Value of 0.9 and energy rating of A++. How can I be sure the windows will suit my style of home? Depending on the style of your property, you may opt to enhance it by installing coloured exterior and/ or interior window frames. Good manufacturers should offer a choice of finishes, colours and styling, allowing full customisation to create a perfectly integrated look. I would also recommend looking for a supplier that can provide the option of having internal and external flush casement. This enables the sash of the window to sit perfectly in line with the frame, and with no overlapping profile, it ensures a smart and elegant appearance. This timeless finish therefore lends itself to all

MARKETING home styles, including traditional townhouses, new builds and projects under strict planning regulations. What type of guarantee? The standard industry guarantee is 10 years, but make sure you find out what’s included in this. Some manufacturers will offer different warranties on the paint and components. For example, the Origin guarantee is for 20 years on its window which covers all manufactured parts as well as the powder coated finish.

• Hinge guards to be installed as standard – this protects the hinges as well as blocking intruders from jemmying the window open • Frames should be mechanically crimped for the most secure system

How quickly will the products be delivered? Standard industry lead time can be anything from four to eight weeks. However, Origin can deliver your windows on an ‘industry-first’ one week lead time in eleven popular colours, and a three week lead time for the further 150 shades. What security requirements should I look for? There are a couple of things you should look out for when choosing a window: • That the whole system conforms to PAS 24 security standards. • That the window has been installed with Yale’s highly renowned and dependable Encloser Lock, which features bi-directional locking technology.

West Sales Up 25% With Deceuninck’s

Mybrand

Deceuninck fabricator, Patios South West Ltd, has seen sales grow 25% using its latest email campaign with Deceuninck’s MyBrand tailored marketing support.

Budget required? The prices can range drastically, from cheaper uPVC systems, to value for money aluminium or ultra-expensive timber options. The price for an aluminium window with an internal and external flush casement would be approximately £300 for 1200mm x 1200mm, without glazing or installation.

Patios South

Devon-based Patios South West recently started fabricating Deceuninck’s #BestInClass Slider24 patio door, and used MyBrand to develop a series of impactful, eye catching eshots to promote the innovative new sliding door.

Determine the orientation of the sun before choosing your windows? If you are designing a new home, consider the direction of the rising and setting sun. This will enable you to determine the size of the window you require and the amount of light you’d like coming into a room, whether it be the morning or afternoon sun. Whatever window you choose, make sure it’s designed to keep your rooms cool in hot weather, and your home warm when it is chilly. Try before you buy We’d always recommend physically seeing the windows in-situ and operating them before you buy. The best place to do this is in a window & door showroom; they often have more than one window system in place, so you can compare and talk through any other questions with experts. For further information on Origin, please visit www.origin-global.com

“Slider24 is a superb patio door and we wanted to spread the word among our customers and prospects”, explains Patios South West Director, Mike Stevens. “Deceuninck’s MyBrand marketing support helped us create a bespoke campaign targeting customers and prospects using Windowbase prospect data. The result was outstanding – we had a number of great leads – and sales of Slider24 increased quickly by 25%. “MyBrand is a fantastic service with great customer support – it’s straightforward and easy-to-follow. We’ve also used it to develop brochures and rollfolds that help us stand out in a crowded market”, adds Mike. Launched in 2013, MyBrand provides Deceuninck fabricators and installers with a wide range of tailored marketing materials. In addition to various literature and direct mail options, customers also benefit from bespoke websites, POS and videos to help build their brand and sell.

CMS Makes Some Noise With Pioneering Acoustic Window At CIH Housing 2016 amongst tenants and homeowners. It is the latest addition to the CMS product and service portfolio which ensures it can provide a total building envelope solution. This encompasses the design, fabrication and installation of windows, doors and curtain walling, combined with the installation of balcony enclosures, external wall insulation (EWI) and cladding.

Visitors to the Chartered Institute of Housing’s ‘Housing 2016’ conference and seminar were able to hear the benefits of installing sound insulating PVCu windows with the new Quiet-Mark approved CMS Silent-Therm window demonstration pod at the CMS Window Systems stand (E16), as well as learning about the company’s latest fuel poverty alleviation solutions. The window, door and curtain walling designer, fabricator and installer, which already offers a range of PVCu, aluminium and timber hybrid products offering up to zero carbon, 0.8 U-value thermal performance, is the first in the UK to have secured Quiet-Mark approval for a whole window. This standard provides independent assurance that a product helps reduce the annoyance of unwanted noise and CMS joins the likes of John Lewis, Virgin, Dyson and Samsung in having products certified. CMS, which works extensively on refurbishment and new build projects for local authorities, housing associations, housebuilders and main contractors across the UK, sees great potential for the Silent-Therm window to help eliminate environmental noise irritation

The effectiveness of this package was available for visitors to see at the exhibition, with a display on the CMS stand telling the story of how the company transformed the energy performance, visual appearance and tenant comfort at the Broomhead Flats in Fife – a project that has helped to alleviate fuel poverty amongst tenants. CMS Window Systems Commercial Director Marie McGilly says, “Noise is one of the biggest complaints amongst tenants and homeowners so we must address this using the advanced product technology available today. And that’s exactly what we’ve done with the CMS Silent-Therm window, a specification that has been independently tested and approved to cut external noise entering the home. Its performance is perfectly demonstrated with our acoustic pod which visitors were able to experience for themselves at CIH Housing 2016.” Anyone who was not able to visit the CMS stand at CIH Housing 2016 can hear the acoustic pod in action at any time at the CMS Innovation Hub, the company’s unique sustainable building educational facility and showcase at its Castlecary HQ and main manufacturing plant near Glasgow. CHARITY and Kyle gave us daily reminders of who we were doing this for and the whole team pulled together to get each other through to the end. The personal sense of achievement from everyone taking part will never be forgotten and is so very well deserved.

GM Fundraising Completes The Border2Border Cycling Challenge With many, many miles, deserts, hills and mountains covered, the GM Fundraising Border2Border team, proudly sponsored by Deceuninck, have completed the epic challenge of cycling from Canada to Mexico. And it is fair to say the challenge, dubbed as ‘The Toughest Yet’ has most definitely lived up to its name! “I struggle to find the words to explain how difficult it was,” comments Gary Morton, founder of GM Fundraising and a rider in this year’s B2B challenge. “Brutal, was one widely used by almost every rider. The early part of the ride saw heavy rain, thunderstorms, snow and hail storms with temperatures around 7 degrees. One of the hardest days, unexpectedly, was on Day 2 riding from Monroe into ‘Yakama, Washington State. Team one had to climb 5,400ft, more than half of which was in the last 8 miles, through pouring rain and a strong head wind – it felt like the worst hour of any ride I have ever done, both physically and mentally. The winds on Day 3 saw us pedalling our hearts out downhill where there would normally be some reprieve. The views from Crater Lake were stunning, but it was so cold no one could stop for very long to take them in. “This quickly changed though as we ascended on to the Columbian

Plateau and into the desert – acclimatising to this was really difficult. The high temperatures meant early starts to avoid the +45 degree highs; gruelling runs through deserts which nearly set your feet on fire, and an astonishing amount of feet climbed in one day – 12,994ft over the Santa Rosa Mountains into Borrego Springs on day 10 to be precise. “We also made a detour to the meet our sponsors Deceuninck at their new plant in Fernley, Nevada. We were joined by a special guest, Fillip Geerhert, the CEO of Deceuninck USA, who joined the team to make the journey into the plant.” Roy Frost, Managing Director of Deceuninck UK adds: “It was great to see the rapid progress on our new factory in Reno, Nevada. Filip told me that the walls went up only last week and the new silos were installed the day before we arrived. It’s open for business in August and in the evening we met the new management team and wished them all the best in their new exciting venture.”Gary continues: “The varying weather conditions certainly added to the enormity of this already epic challenge but it hasn’t been all bad! Some of the scenery was spectacular, the laughs have been many and the team spirit soared throughout. Our Hope House Mascots, Poppy, Harley

“I must also pay tribute to the support team who were amazing – they coped with every situation, putting in extra hours before and after the rider’s day to make sure everything was in-hand. They provided a continuous supply of food and gallons of water – Almost 250 gallons in fact – first aid, therapy (both mental and physical) and found bike repair shops to mend the mechanical issues we encountered. They were also responsible for some of the stunning photography posted on social media. “To say I am very proud of the team is an understatement. In total, the team as whole, completed the following: 2,111 miles; 94,600 ft of climbing; 864,000 calories burned; and 4,536,000 peddle turns (cadence) “The end of the ride saw us cycle, as a complete team, into The Border Field State Park and was followed by an end of ride party hosted by Alan Reece and Kevin Harvey of Panoramic Doors, who have operations in both the US and UK. It was a wonderful gesture and a fantastic way to end the ride. Their generosity didn’t stop at the party as they also donated $3,000 to the B2B fund. “Thank you to everyone that has supported us throughout – and not just from GM Fundraising and the Border2Border team, but from all the children, families and staff at Hope House. “We will be announcing the grand total soon but in the meantime you can still support the team through our just giving page justgiving.com/teams/GMFB2B

VBH, Everglade & Yale

Unite For Charity

Jayesh Patel of London’s Everglade Windows Ltd was the lucky winner of a £500 cash prize, which he suggested should be donated to a worthy cause of his choice. VBH and Yale both matched his donation and Jayesh split the £1500 between the Great Ormond Street Hospital for children, and the Katie Piper Foundation for their ‘Inner Beauty Embraced’ fund in honour of the amazing Tulsi Vagjiani. Tulsi lost both parents and a sibling in a plane crash at the age of 10 and was herself badly injured. Overcoming her emotional and physical scars, Tulsi has pushed on into adulthood and serves as an inspiration to us all to challenge whatever life throws at us.

Hardware specialist VBH used FiT Show 2016 to launch the Platinum TS007 3 star cylinder from Yale. The VBH stand featured a large Yale Platinum display that included a Find the Key competition. Significant cash prizes were on offer from VBH, as well as Smart Home Alarm and CCTV installations courtesy of Yale Door and Window Solutions.

Gary Gleeson of VBH tells us ‘When our MD Peter Rowlands presented Jayesh with his winning ticket, Jayesh said immediately that he would be giving the £500 to charity. Both VBH and Yale were delighted to be able to contribute towards the causes that he chose. It was an unexpected bonus to our appearance at FiT and we wish him well with any future fund raising.’ More on GOSH and the Katie Piper Foundation can be found at www.gosh.nhs.uk/home and everydayhero.co.uk/event/innerbeautyembracedkpfoundation respectively.

Calling All Golfers

Ever fancied playing in the Ryder Cup? Walking in the footsteps of legends…Seve’s historic drive onto the 10th green, Sam Torrance’s famous putt that won the 1985 Ryder Cup match for the European Team or Christie O’Connor Jr’s belligerent 2 iron across the lake at the 18th? or Lee Westwood taking the challenge of the 6th hole? Well now could be your chance thanks to GM Fundraising’s inaugural GMF Cup later this year.

“Taking place from 21st to 24th September 2016 at The Belfry – the UK’s home of the Ryder Cup – this really is set to be the industry’s premium golf event,” says Adrian Barraclough, GM Fundraising Team Member. “Two teams of twelve will get the chance to play on the world-famous Brabazon Course that has seen some of

golf’s most exhilarating dramas played out. We are hoping to offer all of the keenest golfers in the industry a chance to test their skills over the tight fairways, perilous bunkers, lakes and fast undulating greens that have challenged some of the game’s greatest.

“To make this event really special, every last detail has been considered to replicate the famous battle between the USA and Europe held at The Belfry in 1985, 1989, 1993 and most famously 2002. We will even be dining in the same rooms as the USA and European teams used each evening, enjoying the finest food and wine The Belfry has to offer. “Two teams of twelve players will compete in a handicapped matchplay over days one and two, while day three will be played as singles.

Every player will have a personal PGA approved caddie, full kit for each of the three days, up-to-thesecond electronic scorecards. Captains and vice-captains are already appointed and dedicated chaperones to take care of each team’s every requirement will be available throughout the event. Guests will also enjoy inclusive bed & breakfast in an executive suite, dinner and wine each evening and on course refreshments throughout the day. All spa facilities are also available during the event. The final presentation will take place on the last evening where partners are also invited to join us at the Gala Dinner style event. “We couldn’t be putting more into making this event unforgettable, but have only a few places remaining – for further information, please contact Gary Morton on gary@gmfundraising.co.uk.

The Cricket Derbyshire Foundation Is Bowled Over By The Support From Kensington Windows And The Synseal Group all the best with the new facility.”

Left to right Steve and Lauren McGinty (Kensington) Ian Hodgkinson project leader

When The Cricket Derbyshire Foundation was gifted a pavilion at the Derbyshire County Cricket Ground, they undertook a refurbishment project in order to transform it into an after school sports and activity centre for under privileged children. They approached Kensington Windows, a local, family run business who in turn contacted the Synseal Group in order to see if they could help with any products for the project. Steve McGinty of Kensington Windows explains: “We were approached by the charity as the Architect on the project is a friend of mine and as we are local, they thought we might be able to help. Obviously key to what we do is providing good quality products at competitive prices, backed with great customer service – but we also want to do whatever we can to support the local community. We then approached the Synseal Group to see if they could offer any support and we were delighted when they agreed. The official opening took place recently and it really was a fantastic day, with local celebrities coming along to officially open the refurbished pavilion. We would like to thank the Synseal Group for supporting us with this project and wish The Cricket Derbyshire Foundation

Group Sales and Marketing Director at Synseal, Andy Jones, adds: “The Synseal Group has been more than happy to support the pavilion refurbishment at Derbyshire County Cricket Club. Working with Kensington Windows, we have been able to contribute towards the supply and fit of the Patio Doors used at the facility and it brings us great pleasure to be able to offer help and support in this way. We hope the new facility proves to be a great asset to the local community, and makes a real difference to the lives of the children who will be using it.” The Cricket Derbyshire Foundation was established as an extension to the ‘Cricket Derbyshire’ partnership between Derbyshire County Cricket Club (the professional club) and Derbyshire Cricket Board Ltd (recreational cricket). The Foundation promotes the power of sport, and specifically cricket, utilising the profile of Derbyshire County Cricket Club and its professional players to engage, inspire and motivate individuals to achieve and live positive and healthy lifestyles. Steve concludes: “Even though some companies are cutting back, it’s reassuring to know that Kensington and Synseal combined were able to support this charitable initiative and assist in the provision of products – which will benefit the entire community.” For further information on Kensington Windows call 01332 366355 or visit www.kensingtonwindows.co.uk.
