Eurocell Expands Horizons With

Vista Acquisition Eurocell – one of the UK’s leading manufacturer, distributor and recycler of window, door, conservatory and roofline products – has announced the acquisition of Vista Panels from CorpAcq Ltd. Vista is a major manufacturer of composite and PVC-U entrance doors, with a turnover of approximately £14 million. CorpAcq bought Vista in April 2008.

Eurocell offers a wide range of PVC-U doors, including French doors as part of its Eurologik and Modus systems and in-line patio doors in bar length and kit form. It is also the UK market leader in PVC-U bi-fold doors, with the Eurocell Aspect system still the only product currently available to achieve both BBA and full Secured by Design accreditation.

Vista has been at the forefront of growth in the composite doors market in the UK, with a strong presence in the social housing and private RMI sectors. It is also the sole supplier of entrance doors to Eurocell and a significant consumer of Eurocell profile. The Wirral-based company employs over 100 people nationwide.

Keith Sadler, Managing Director of Vista Panels Ltd, said: “I’m delighted. We have forged a close working relationship with Eurocell over 10 years, so we feel like a member of the family already. For all of us at Vista it’s genuinely exciting to be part of a group with such a track record of success and clear roadmap for future growth.”

Tuffx Investment Increases Weekly Toughened Glass Production Capacity To 25,000M2 Specialist toughened glass manufacturer TuffX has just had a third glass toughening furnace installed. Part of a planned investment of £1.2 million in 2015-16, the Tamglass (Glaston) Furnace FT 500 means the company now has a weekly glass production capacity of 25,000m2 of 4mm toughened conservatory roof glass and is one of a select few manufacturers with three furnaces. TuffX’s Graham Price said, “We have three Tamglass furnaces because they are the best on the market for toughening glass. The quality they give is excellent, which is exactly what we want for our customers.” 4 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

The new furnace gives TuffX a great deal of flexibility. It can toughen glass with thicknesses of 4mm – 19mm, but perhaps most eye-catching is the size of the sheets it can handle: up to 4.2m x 2.4m. Graham commented, “Investment in a new furnace gives us the infrastructure to produce processed glass for an even wider variety of complex commercial applications, giving us greater scope to supply developing markets.” TuffX has a policy of continuous investment in its business to allow it to constantly meet and exceed its customers’ expectations and the furnace is part of a

Keith Sadler, MD, Vista Panels Patrick Bateman, Eurocell CEO, commented: “Keith and his team run a successful company. But it’s their energy, enthusiasm and progressiveness that makes Vista stand out. It’s logical, therefore, that we wanted them to join forces with us. Together we have a stronger proposition in markets strategically important to both businesses.” www.eurocell.co.uk wider programme of investment scheduled to take place this year. Elsewhere in the business, a new factory extension, which will take manufacturing space from 55,000 square feet to 80,000 square feet, is due to be completed in August, helping to meet growing demand for TuffX’s glass products. TuffX’s meticulous approach and comprehensive range of specialist toughened glass makes it popular for both high profile large scale complex commercial contracts and smaller fabricators and installers looking to add value to their portfolio. Further value is added with the company’s approach to product innovation, the perfect example of which is a brand new product called Ambi-Solid glass that bridges the gap between tile effect conservatory roofs and solar reflective glass roofs. www.tuffxglass.co.uk

TRADE NEWS ing door SBD approval in 2009. Since then, the company has added its Ultimate Aluminium bifold door – another industry first – a second PVC-U bi-fold door system and an extensive range of composite doors. Sliders UK is encouraging the window and door industry to get behind the campaign ‘Home Security Sense’, by promoting the benefits of SBD products to homeowners.

Ian Longbottom, Chairman, Sliders UK

Home Security Sense Campaign Wins Westminster Backing

Home Security Sense, the industry-wide campaign to encourage home insurers to offer discounts on policies if doors and windows are accredited to a Secured by Design (SBD) standard, has secured political backing. Member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley, Nigel Evans MP, has picked up the mantle, writing on its behalf to Minister of State for Housing and Planning, Brandon Lewis MP raising the points made by the campaign. The cost of home insurance claims for burglaries average at £2,178. Secured by Design accredited building products and specifications can deliver a dramatic reduction in break-ins and have the potential to save the insurance industry tens of millions of pounds each year. But despite this very few insurers offer reduced premiums for the installation of SBD products. “This is absolutely incongruous with what the Government is trying to do to design-out crime”, said Ian Longbottom, Chairman,

Sliders UK. He continued: “The introduction of Part Q in new build is founded on a recognition that SBD and PAS24:2012 independently accredited doors and windows can contribute to a significant reduction in crime. “This contribution is recognised at an industry wide level by the Association of British Insurers but this doesn’t translate into lower premiums for homeowners in the same way as for example, fitting a burglar alarm might.” In a letter to the Sliders UK Chairman, Nigel Evans MP writes: “You’re campaign draws out some valid points in regard to insurance. Given that as you say, Secured by Design products can reduce burglaries by up to half, it seems that this should be a very significant factor in premiums.” Sliders UK became the first PVC-U patio door manufacturer to be accredited with Secured by Design status in 2008, it also secured the first PVC-U bi-fold-

The fabricator is also encouraging systems companies, installers and fabricators to write to their local MPs, highlighting the contribution that SBD products can make in cutting crime. The calls have also received support from both the police service and SBD. Ian concluded: “It’s a massive oversight, and in effect is leaving consumers out of pocket, whether or not they have installed SBD products, because nationally an opportunity to lower the incidence of burglary is being missed. “This is not only a cost to insurers in pay outs but to each and every one of us in higher premiums to cover them. “It’s a very simple equation – the more SBD products we fit, the lower the rate of burglary and the lower the cost to insurers. “This saving should be passed on to homeowners who install SBD products, while in offering lower premiums for those who do, insurance companies have an opportunity to kick start a positive cycle of investment.” For more information about the Home Security Sense campaign, or to download a templated MP letter visit www.sliders-uk.com/ home-security-sense. from 6 to 12. Thanks to the capital that the BGF invested, sales grew by 23% in the 12 months to 31st October 2015, and we now plan to open 10 additional trade counters in 2016.” The boost in production and sales has been reflected in Stevenswood’s employment figures, with 60 new jobs created since the BGF’s investment, taking the company’s total workforce up to 158. “Stevenswood’s growth has been rapid but sustainable”, Ron continues, “and we’ve never compromised the quality of our product or service. Our main market remains the loyal tradespeople we have built up over the years, but increasingly we’re working with homeowners who want to ‘do it themselves’ too.

Ron Hepburn, MD of Stevenswood at its new trade counter in Sighthill in Edinburgh Stevenswood, a West Lothian-based manufacturer of industry-leading PVC-U systems from The VEKA UK Group has been selected as one of the London Stock Exchange Group’s (LSEG’s) prestigious 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain in 2016. Described by the LSEG as “an annual celebration of some of the fastest-growing and most dynamic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK”, the report – now in its third year – is supported by numerous senior politicians including the Chancellor, George Osborne MP, with media partnership from industry-championing national newspaper, The Daily Telegraph. Only 56 Scottish companies, and 104 from the manufacturing sector throughout the UK made the list, further highlighting the prowess of Stevenswood’s achievements over those of its peers. 6 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

Managing Director, Ron Hepburn commented: “To be listed in the report is reliant on a business’ performance over the last four years – a period of significant growth for Stevenswood – and we’re thrilled to have our accomplishments recognised by such a prominent exponent of UK enterprise. “2014 saw us relocate to a new five-acre home, streamlining our manufacturing, with all processes now taking place under one roof. Capacity more than doubled within months of the move, comfortably making us Scotland’s premier trade fabricator and one of the UK’s top 30. “Early last year, we secured £3.5m investment from the Business Growth Fund (BGF), enabling us to further expand production and double our trade counters throughout Scotland

“The VEKA UK Group is the ideal systems supplier as it more than satisfies every link in the supply chain. Homeowners love the quality, versatility and performance of its products, and its installer support programmes provide reassurance that the fit will match the finish. As a fabricator, we know that the demand for VEKA products will always exist – especially given its propensity for technical advancements – and we don’t underestimate the role our relationship with The Group has played in our continuing success.” Dave Jones, Managing Director of The VEKA UK Group commented: “We’re thrilled to see the work of one of our leading fabricators celebrated in such a wide-reaching and well-respected resource. Stevenswood has fearlessly grasped every opportunity open to it, and thrived through a tough economic period where so many have faltered. On behalf of The VEKA UK Group I offer my sincere congratulations – long may their success continue!”

Alan Fielder, Sales & Marketing Director at Edgetech UK said: “I’m delighted to hear that the Passive House Institute has recognised that these spacer bars are eligible for use under the Passive House standard – a simple approach to building super energy efficient homes.” While Passive House only accounts for a small percentage of buildings in the UK, many more developers and specifiers look for products that offer top thermal efficiency.

REHAU Commits To 100% Renewable Electricity Just a few months after the publication of its latest report setting out its progress towards demanding sustainability targets, REHAU has made another big leap with a switch to 100% renewable electricity for all of its plants in the UK.

SmartestEnergy provides customers with renewable electricity recognised as having zero carbon emissions under Scope 2 reporting, and backed by an Emissions Factor Model certified by the Carbon Trust.

This includes not only its window system and pipework production facilities in Blaenau and Amlwch, but also its head office in Ross on Wye and its distribution warehouse in Runcorn.

REHAU’s UK Chief Executive Martin Hitchin said: “This is the latest evidence of REHAU’s commitment to an energy efficient, sustainable future – not just in the products we manufacture but in how we manufacture them.

Provider SmartestEnergy has issued REHAU with a certificate acknowledging its commitment to purchasing renewable electricity up until the end of September 2016, and REHAU has already confirmed that it will continue into 2017.

“As a group, we’ve targeted a 30% reduction in primary energy consumption per tonne of production by 2020 (based on 2009 figures) and here in the UK this is a significant step in our progress towards that.” www.rehau.com

Mercury Continues To Rise Specialist PVCu and aluminium fabricator Mercury Glazing Supplies Ltd has just reported a 16% year on year demand for its bifold doors. The impressive increase demonstrates Mercury’s growing reputation as a niche manufacturer of high quality architectural aluminium and specialist PVCu products. Chris Reeks, the company’s Sales and Marketing Director comments, “Being a niche manufacturer means we can supply installers and fabricators alike without any conflict of interest.” The company works with leading industry names such as Smart, Jacks Aluminium, Spectus and VEKA. The company is the UK’s largest manufacturer of the Spectus vertical slider and it has just added the VEKA FlushSash to the range to enhance its reputation as a niche manufacturer

And the commitment to customer service doesn’t stop with turnaround times. Chris reports a recent story of the delivery team carrying an order for a new trade customer down a narrow country lane on foot when the road became impassable for vehicles. “Needless to say, the customer was very impressed with our commitment to going the extra mile – literally! – and we’re expecting further orders from them as a result.”

Mercury offers a 24 hour turnaround on both PVCu and aluminium quotes, a timescale that has been maintained even with the recent increase in demand for estimates.

So with demand for the product range growing, the product range increasing, delivery times improving and the extra mile of commitment being the norm, the outlook is definitely hotting up for Mercury!

Fabricate Or Buy-In? …CJR

Goes For Both With

Glazerite Clive Ret, Founder, CJR Go on fabricating or start buying in and concentrate on installing? It may be a dilemma for many companies, but not for CJR Glass & Glazing – the Southampton based company decided on a strategic plan to do both and now, with the help of trade fabricator Glazerite Windows Ltd, the strategy is paying dividends. CJR is still manufacturing white casements as well as resi and French doors but now turns to Glazerite for all other coloured

foils and window styles, including Vertical Sliders and Residence 9 as well as composite doors and bi-folds and is enjoying the best of both worlds, as founder Clive Ret explained: “I didn’t want to get out of fabricating altogether. For one thing, we get a lot of council emergency work such as break-ins. So now, I can still make and install a white window or door in 24 hours but at the same time, offer customers a wider range than ever.”

The move was part of a consolidation overhaul that also saw the company change over to the Veka system and move from two separate factories into a single, much bigger premises. Also the new unit includes a showroom, which means CJR can show its newly expanded range of products at their best, especially with support from Glazerite on showroom display materials. Glazerite Director Jason Thompson said: “We have encouraged many small fabricator-installers to shut the factory and concentrate on what they do best – selling and installing. And now here is a company that has found its own twist on that philosophy and it is doing very nicely as a result. “Getting out of fabricating is still the best option for many but we realise it’s a big decision to make. CJR has shown how it is possible to make the best of both. Fabricating white frames in core designs gives them a simple in-house process with low stock levels and no complications, while buying in coloured foils and the premium and specialist systems gives them a large and varied offering that no business this size could ever dream of fabricating cost-effectively. “CJR has shown the way here and if it has given anyone else any ideas, we would be very happy to help them to develop it.”

Nice Road Truckers Emplas Installs Cameras And Real-Time Tracking To Fleet and logistics operation. This has included the extension of its factory production bar-coding system to its dispatch and delivery operation. As part of a rigorously controlled process, individual elements of each order are automatically checked as they are prepared in the loading bays. They are then re-scanned onto the lorry, eliminating the shipping of incomplete orders.

Emplas has installed front and rear facing cameras and real-time tracking throughout its fleet as part of a new drive on road safety and customer service. The rear camera tracks loading and unloading of product. This footage is then transmitted back to Emplas operational hub for review to make sure that windows and doors are being dispatched and handled correctly. The front camera provides a record of how the truck is being driven, while data on breaking, acceleration and performance are also collated and transmitted back for download. With seven 44 tonne trucks now on the road, the initiative sits as part of a dual commitment by the G15 Fabricator of the Year to road safety and the welfare of its people and service and product quality, as its Operations Director, Kush Patel, explained. 12 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

“The cameras are as much about customer service as they are about road safety. The data we collect means that we can work with our drivers to promote road safety and to optimise the performance of our fleet, minimising the impact of our logistics operation on the environment. “It also allows us to monitor the loading and unloading of product to make sure that it’s being handled correctly, from a safety and welfare perspective but also one of product quality and potential damage in transit. “It gives us real-real time data on how the trucks are being driven. Heavy breaking for example, triggers an automatic email alert. It’s an opportunity to drive continuous improvement throughout the delivery process.” The road safety drive comes as part of a wider investment by Emplas in its manufacturing

At the other end of the process each product is scanned off the lorry, which doesn’t leave for the next delivery until all products and ancillaries are accounted for. The paperless system then automatically issues a notification of receipt to the customer and the invoice, providing a clear audit trail, which supports their customers evidence their ‘factory management systems’ required under CE Marking. As part of the real-time tracking process, Emplas customers also receive a notification ahead of time of the imminent arrival of their delivery. Kush added: “We’re first and foremost working with our drivers to make sure that they get to where they need to go safely. There is, however, a dual benefit in that in doing so we’re improving our service and ultimately driving forward the end product quality that we deliver to our customers.” For more information on Emplas visit www.emplas.co.uk , email info@emplas.co.uk or call 01933 674880.

Pyramid Profiles Moves To Halo After Twenty Years’

Exclusivity With Previous Supplier A Walsall-based trade fabricator of PVC-U windows and doors, Pyramid Profiles has announced its move to using Halo profile as well as other VEKA UK Group products after 20 years of working exclusively with another systems supplier.

The family-run company now manufactures a wide range of Halo products, including the chamfered System 10 and sculptured Rustique profiles; conservation and heritage favourite, FlushSash; and The VEKA UK Group’s innovative Imagine Patio and Bi-Fold Doors. “We’d been looking for some time for a systems supplier to help take our business forward; not only through superior products but a great support package too”, explains Pyramid Profiles’ Managing Director, Paul Bailey. “You need only read the trade press to see story after story of customer support and satisfaction with Halo. And The VEKA UK Group’s #JustTheFACTS campaign mentions more than 16 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

100 companies switching profile systems with them in the last 12 months which gave us extra confidence in changing over with them. “We’d always liked the looks, quality and versatility of Halo’s Rustique profile, and because they are part of The VEKA UK Group, we knew they’d offer stability, longevity and product investment. “The recent Imagine suite of doors is a great case in point – a collection that’s been designed from the ground up with no expense spared, to meet every challenge that might be thrown at it. Our customers love how it ‘ticks all the boxes’ – security, energy ratings, adaptability, weatherproofing and style – for even the most demanding of homeowners, and its industry-leading credentials don’t stand to be surpassed anytime soon!” Paul also notes the support, particularly with marketing, that

many of his customers receive as part of The VEKA UK Group’s phenomenally successful Approved Installer Scheme: “In the past, our systems supplier had seemed content to ‘leave us to it’ as long as the orders kept rolling in! With VEKA and Halo there’s a much more proactive approach to ensuring success for each link in the supply chain; helping installers to promote their businesses to homeowners and, in turn, generating business for fabricators like us. It’s clear to see why over 600 companies have joined the scheme in less than two years since its launch.” The VEKA UK Group’s Managing Director, Dave Jones welcomed Pyramid Profiles, saying: “It’s a bold move for any company to venture into partnership with a new systems supplier, especially after being loyal to one provider for over two decades. We’re thrilled that the combination of our products and support attracted Pyramid Profiles to The VEKA UK Group, and that we’ve emphatically made good in demonstrating the improved relationship that can and should exist between suppliers and fabricators. We hope our new pairing will be stronger than ever in 20 years’ time and look forward to continuing our work with Pyramid.” Paul adds: “The ethic that comes from being a family company is strong here at Pyramid, and the same is true with The VEKA UK Group. We can feel that everyone is working towards a greater good, and it has already given us confidence that didn’t exist with our previous systems company – to grow, expand production, and bring in new customers. We’re glad we made the move and look forward to what the future holds for Pyramid Profiles and Halo together.” www.vekauk.com

Guardian UK Earns ‘Responsible

Sourcing’ Certification

Guardian Industries UK Ltd. (Guardian) has earned the coveted BES 6001 accreditation for its responsible sourcing of materials. After independent assessment by the British Standards Institution, the awarding body, Guardian UK received a “Very Good” score, highlighting the company’s longterm focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility. The Building Research Establishment (BRE) Ltd.’s BES 6001 certification assesses how well companies operate within strict standards of supply chain management and environmental and social responsibility when managing relationships with suppliers. Specifically, it acknowledges the “Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.” 20 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

Part of Guardian Industries Corp. – a leading global manufacturer of high-quality commercial, residential, interior and automotive glass products – Guardian secured accreditation in late December. Having the BES 6001 certification not only shows Guardian to be a responsible company that cares for the environment, noted Steven Scrivens, Marketing Manager for Guardian Glass UK & Ireland, but it also helps it to stand out amongst its competitors.` “We’ve been following the development of this standard for many years,” said Scrivens, who was actively involved in the process. “We worked with both British Glass and with BRE – the authors of the standard – to help them to better understand the glass and

glazing industry and how the standard could be applied to address this construction product in the supply chain.” Chris Duguid, Guardian’s – Float Production Manager, led the implementation. Various sustainability assessment methodologies, including the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) recognise responsible sourcing, which counts toward the credits required to assess the code level of a building. BREEAM is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings and communities. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building’s environmental performance. Architects and specifiers ask for this accreditation as they apply for the buildings they develop to be assessed by BREEAM. Having BES 6001-accredited building products provides additional credits that are necessary to achieve the higher levels of performance. A higher BREEAM score also can make their building more marketable. The BES standard requires an organisation to demonstrate good management of transport impacts, greenhouse gas emissions, and the impact on employment and the local community. And the holder also must show that it engages with its own supply-chain partners to deliver sustainable policies of their own. “This process took time and it was a challenging task to achieve the ‘Very Good’ rating that we were awarded,” said Chris Duguid. “We’re delighted that our efforts in the area of environmental responsibility have now been recognized by a respected and independent party.” For more information, visit www.guardianglass.co.uk.

London Stock Exchange Group CEO, Xavier Rolet, describes these 1000 businesses as the ‘engine of the UK economy’ because they help create an ‘antifragile’ SME economy which is more robust, more flexible and less prone to boom and bust. With growth from a £1.4m turnover business to a £35m company employing more than 245 people in just 10 years, CMS has excelled consistently thanks to a sustainable business strategy which delivers a range of high performance building envelope solutions with the flexibility to suit the varied demands of the housing and commercial building sectors.

CMS provides a total building envelope package which upgrades the thermal performance and visual appeal of any building to roof height through the installation of external wall insulation (EWI) and cladding solutions in addition to designing, manufacturing and installing windows, doors and curtain walling. All its solutions ensure Britain’s housing stock and buildings can achieve 21st century energy and comfort standards by fabricating products using the best available components from industry leading supply chain partners like Kawneer, Metal Technology, Sheerframe, Yale and SaintGobain. It’s Party Time For Profile 22 Customer Super Seal

Celebrating 25 years in business, it’s all smiles for Northern Ireland-based Profile 22 customer Super Seal.

Warm Edge for Windows

Opening its doors in 1990 in the midst of the double glazing boom, local businessman Kenneth Taylor identified a significant gap in the market and quickly capitalised on it. Identifying a distinct lack of quality uPVC window and door products in the local area, Taylor and his team set up shop in a small premises in Castledawson making 50 frames a week. Now a market leader in uPVC window and door manufacture and installation, Super Seal has grown from this figure to now manufacture more than 2000 frames per week from orders received through four sites across Northern Ireland. “Despite our rapid growth, we made sure to remain true to our core ethos,” explained Managing Director Kenneth Taylor. “We value the individuals who helped us to grow and this is reflected in every aspect of the business.” Initially manufacturing traditional uPVC windows and doors, Super Seal has grown to specialise in producing an array of uPVC products, including fully reversible windows for the Housing Executive market and has now opened a new composite door factory in Lurgan. “More recently we added aluminium windows, doors and bi-folding doors to our range,” said Taylor. “We’ll also be launching an exciting new product at FIT Show 2016.” With customer service an important part of Super Seal’s business, according to its Managing Director the company has always aimed to be recognised as a highly customer focused supplier. DEAR GERALD

Dear

Gerald The new PAS24:2016 has arrived!

Given a choice between doors that pass and doors that fail, whose doors will they buy?

Some said it would never get here. It would be kicked into the long grass, or watered down so it wouldn’t affect them. Sit tight and do nothing, they said. Wait until we let you know.

More alert homeowners also want proper doors, and predominantly they search online to find them. They don’t want to be palmed off with doors that let burglars in within seconds.

If you listened to that advice, you’ll be 6 months behind your competitors who acted.

One definition of marketing is, selling products that don’t come back to customers who do.

Gareth Mobley

They’ve been selling doors that pass the new PAS24:2016 test. They can continue selling to New Build, conversions where Building Regulations apply, and Social Housing where housing specifiers are already insisting on it. Secured by Design is going to adopt it.

Every month, 45,000 homeowners looking for doors visit our website to find installers who sell our highly secure, premium quality, stylish doors.

Don’t installers want that? Happy customers who keep coming back because their doors don’t? Just for the record, Solidor, with its solid laminated-hardwood timber core, passes the new PAS24:2016 test with ease. In January we also standardised on Ultion, the most secure cylinder door lock.

Whatever your market, you’ll be affected by the new PAS24. Independent tests show 7 out of 10 composite doors fail this test. They fail because the GRP skins on their doors are too thin to offer the necessary protection

So now we say, with a considerable degree of confidence, that Solidor is by far and away the most secure composite door.

If the skin on your GRP door is 1.6-1.8mm thick, you’re out of luck. It won’t pass. Skins need to be at least 3.6mm thick. And since GRP skins are the most expensive component in a GRP door, prices will rise sharply as composite door manufacturers upgrade their specs to pass.

Gareth Mobley CEO, Solidor

Sincerely

What’s the most important: energy, weather performance, security, long life, appearance? They’re all important. Homeowners want them all, and with the very best windows they can have them all.

In a recent article, Mila Technical Manager Strafford Cooke said there will be a period of grace for manufacturers, because not all UKAS test houses are set up for the tests yet. So there’s no reason to rush to change supplier. Technically he’s right. But everyone’s been talking about the new test for 6 months. Housebuilders, private developers and Social Housing specifiers have been listening to the same debates, and reading the same magazines as you. They’re already asking for secure doors that pass the proper tests. 30 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

DEAR GERALD

Most of us lust with our eyes and buy with our heart. When our eyes and heart are not engaged, we quibble about price and other details. But when our eyes and hearts are fully engaged, we want it now, soonest. We can’t wait to spend what it takes to get our hands on what we fall in love with. Is love too strong and emotive a word? Who’d have thought we’d fall in love with technology? Call it what you like, but brands like Apple have created an overwhelming desire, an emotional resonance with a series of stunningly beautiful products. Apple’s computers always looked more attractive than others, but the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Macbook Air, iwatch and Apple TV have moved billions of us worldwide on to a different level altogether. Even Apple’s packaging excites longing. This ‘emotional resonance’ is what underpins Apple’s faster sales and higher prices. Consumers find the money and pay the price because their products are different, desirable and simply lovely. Humans have always behaved differently around beautiful people and beautiful things. Now, unlikely as it seemed a few years ago, people are behaving differently about some windows, doors and conservatories today. Pretty windows, beautiful doors and a wide palette of lovely colours are turning hearts and heads. We should welcome this, because it means many more exciting opportunities. I certainly do, because over and above our best-in-class performance, Deceuninck designs its windows and doors to look beautiful and stand out. It’s why installers talk about Deceuninck’s pretty windows. My forecast for 2016? This will be the year when beautiful windows and doors take off, when great looks and design move up a level and change the market. The FIT Show 2016 will be dominated by a few absolutely stunning, stylish new windows and doors that will turn hearts and heads. And beautiful colour will become the main act, as it is on the continent. Keep a lookout for Deceuninck’s new stunners and prepare to drool! Sincerely Roy Frost MD Deceuninck UK

32 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

Platforms Still Relevant. I note with interest articles by Roy Frost on “Pretty Windows” and more recently from Dan Gill of R9. As someone who has been around PVC-U window & door system R&D for many Mark Barsby years, I have long been an admirer of Dan’s work and eye for detail, indeed I was of one his first customers in a previous life. The entrepreneurial intention of both articles is in keeping with our industry’s history in finding new and evolving methods to push purchaser’s buttons by making decisions on beauty and/or fashion. I’m no salesperson – but after 30 years in our industry – I do understand the need to give the purchaser what they want. However, there is more to fenestration innovation than fashion: beauty goes beyond simply what you see. Brand new windows and doors are a major purchasing decision; most of us only do it once or twice in our lifetime. They are not fast moving, short-term consumer goods like mobile phones in shiny packaging. How many of us would purchase a car without knowing the full spec and what is under the bonnet? Whether this is uppermost in the purchaser’s post-recession, decision-making process right now is a discussion for another day. Today’s 70mm PVC-U window systems bring to the ‘user’ (not everyone owns their own property, or lives in a stone-built ‘chocolate box’ cottage) many, economic, social and environmental benefits as Dan mentioned such as energy efficiency, security and weather performance. However, what is not mentioned is longevity and durability. The PVC-U products which are installed in buildings now will be there for many years to come. They will probably perform just as well for the next generation and beyond but at some point will become a legacy for a future generation once either the window or the building is no longer cost effective or can’t be renovated or repaired. PVC-U has huge benefits as a material for windows because of its durability and cost effectiveness in relation to alternative materials, however the raw or virgin material is still derived from fossil feedstocks.

DEAR GERALD

Resources and materials are finite. It is reported that globally we are currently consuming natural resources of 1.6 Earths to support the current population. Estimates say that this will rise to 2 Earths by 2050 as global population increases. As an industry. we have worked very hard at recycling, collection and sorting schemes and recycling numbers are impressive, increasing year on year, but we still have far to go on our ecological journey. Planners and purchasers can specify/buy what they want, but selling on fashion and beauty should not be the only method. +90mm systems with many chambers are all well and good but they are consuming approximately 30% more raw materials without the equivalent improvements in performance. Longevity and durability are already high on the agenda with operation and maintenance schedules and manuals required for NHBC, CE Marking and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Designing windows that will last longer and can easily be maintained or upgraded and use less or smart materials is not ‘pretty’ but at VEKA, we as systems designers have a history, but also feel a sense of responsibility for designing products that consume less and are recyclable, that minimise legacy for consumers, users, the industry and the planet. VEKA was the first systems company in the UK and mainland Europe to invest in recycling plants to process and recycle post-consumer PVC-U windows. Designing by the ‘modular/platform principle’, or ‘systems thinking’ makes a window much easier to dismantle, separate and recycle at the end of its useful life. A decision which was uppermost in our thinking when we re-designed our new Matrix 70 Infinity. A window that can contain up to 80% post-consumer recycled PVC-U, while still being stylish, modern, thermally efficient, secure, weather tight and durable. M70 Infinity is VEKA’s 2nd generation recycled platform system. Does it give all the ecological answers? Probably not, we are on an evolving journey, but for the reasons set out in this letter, platform systems and modular thinking are very relevant to the longevity of our industry. For just the facts about Matrix 70 Infinity, come and visit us at The Fit Show stand No. 150 #JustTheFACTS Mark Barsby The VEKA UK Group

In his recent letter, Mark Barsby, VEKA UK, says “Planners and purchasers can specify/buy what they want, but selling on fashion and beauty should not be the only method.” He adds: “90mm+ systems with many chambers are all well and good but they are consuming approxDan Gill imately 30% more raw materials without equivalent improvements in performance.” Today, purchasers expect their windows to meet all their basic needs. They expect excellent weather performance, security and energy efficiency. They expect low maintenance and a long, trouble free life. Like everything else they expect their windows will be recycled at the end of their life, and they will. But they don’t get excited by needs, any more than they get excited about separating their household refuse into different recycling bins each week. And they won’t pay any more for them. Perhaps deliberately, Mark concentrates on their needs and plays down their wants. But purchasers have moved on. Conspicuously, traditional PVC-U window systems have made no headway in conservation areas and listed buildings. That’s despite trying for decades to ignore planners, and install inappropriate windows that stand out like a sore thumb. Perhaps it’s time the industry moved on too. That’s why I based the design of R9 on the dimensions and detailing in Article 4 directions, the planners’ bible. Rather than try to persuade planners to accept standard shiny-white 70mm PVC-U windows they didn’t want, I designed windows the way they’re meant to be. R9’s 100mm system was not an arbitrary size, it was designed for period properties and the conservation market. And because R9 is exactly right, homeowners don’t have a battle on their hands. Planners recommend R9 to them. If systems using less PVC-U were the answer, as Mark implies, he wouldn’t have discontinued his 58mm system. Quite rightly Mark emphasises longevity, but most PVC-U windows are recycled well before their time. Typically, homeowners replace functioning PVC-U windows when they move home, retire, or see neighbours or friends upgrade their windows and doors. Usually they upgrade because they look tired, ugly WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016 33

DEAR GERALD

or inappropriate, and they upgrade mostly because they want to, not because they have to. They upgrade to enhance the appearance of their home, so it looks the way they want it, or it looks the way it was meant to be.

developers and specifiers expect their windows and doors to keep the weather and burglars out and the heat in, and last a long time with little trouble or attention. No one gets excited about that. Maybe they should. But they don’t.

They resent paying a penny more for windows they need and have to buy, and negotiate keenly to get the price down. But they’re happy to pay a lot more for the windows they want.

People don’t get excited by what they need, they get excited by what they want. And when they’re shopping for wants, people buy with their eyes.

So let’s stop telling homeowners and planners what’s best for them, and listen to what they’re telling us. Sincerely Dan Gill, Chief Designer and MD The Residence Collection

Mark Barsby VEKA UK refers to my ‘Pretty Windows’ article in a recent letter saying “Planners and purchasers can specify/buy what they want, but selling on fashion and beauty should not be the only method.” He also dismisses 90mm+ systems with Roy Frost many chambers saying: “they are consuming approximately 30% more raw materials without equivalent improvements in performance.”

Selling to people who are shopping for needs is hard work because buyers don’t really want to buy. You have to persuade them. But when you sell wants, buyers get excited and persuade themselves. Needs and wants aren’t interchangeable. Wants mean desire, lust and longing, powerful urges that demand to be satisfied. When our eyes lock on to beauty, our hearts and wallets follow. If we really want something, we’ll do whatever we can to get it. Designing windows is complicated, but looks shouldn’t be an afterthought. By and large, all leading Syscos can manage needs. Installers sell looks, because in a market where so much is so similar, that’s what homeowners buy. That’s why we get a kick when installers say people prefer Deceuninck’s pretty windows. Sincerely Roy Frost, Managing Director Deceuninck UK

Deceuninck don’t sell a 90mm window system in the UK, and I’m not defending any particular system depth, but doesn’t VEKA sell a 90mm (and an 82mm) window system in Germany? And for now at least, aren’t we still one Europe? Regardless of frame depth, British specifiers and homeowners like slimmer, prettier systems designed to suit our architecture and character. Mark makes much of recycling in his letter. We believe it’s important too. That’s why Deceuninck invested in one of the largest, most modern recycling plants in Europe.

If you want to get involved in the discussion, or would like to air your views on a particular industry subject, then Email me at gerald@windownews.co.uk

But we need to be clear about needs and wants.

We cannot guarantee that we will publish everything, but we will do our utmost to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard.

We have to satisfy people’s needs. Homeowners, 34 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

Glazerite, one of the industry leading manufacturers of PVC-U trade frames, windows, doors and conservatories, has announced the appointment of a new Group Environmental Manager, Barry Baddock. Barry, who brings nearly 10 years of experience to the role, has been tasked with reducing the amount of waste produced by the company across all its sites, and has already introduced a raft of new measures designed to improve recycling efficiency and ensure a significant reduction in the amount of material sent to landfill. “The whole system for the disposal of used materials has been revamped. Last year we produced something in the region of 174 tonnes of general waste,

including just over 17 tonnes of glass, but we’ll only generate a tiny fraction of that from now on,” Barry explained. “For instance, old and used frames are now stripped of all their metal components, such as the metal inserts, and 99% of this can be processed back into the factory, which has the added benefit of saving money of course. And because the material we’re returning to VEKA for recycling is now 100% PVC, that also provides us with additional revenue.” The role of Group Environmental Manager is an entirely new position created by Glazerite which, as a long term Network VEKA member, is extremely proud of its green credentials. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of the Glazerite team,” continued Barry. “Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill is my number one priority and it’s fantastic that I’ve already been able to implement a range of new procedures to help achieve this goal, as well as develop a long term strategy for environmentally friendly manufacturing at the company.”

Solidor + Ultion As Standard Claimed As The Most Secure Composite Door Approved Document Q and can legally be installed on new builds.

Stylish New Video

Puts XtremeDoor In

The Spotlight

Composite doors will pass the new PAS24 cut test if a 50mm square hole cannot be cut through the door using two chisels and a Stanley Knife in three minutes. If a hole can be cut through the door in that time, the door fails. The size of the hole is big enough for a hand to reach in and open the door from the inside using the key or thumb turn.

Specialist composite door fabricator, Vista, have launched the first video in an ambitious new marketing strategy for the year ahead. The stylish 25-second clip showcases the company’s best-in-class composite door, XtremeDoor – delivering a punchy breakdown of its security and weatherproofing features, while roving over its authentic woodgrain finish and polished stainless steel hardware.

The most secure composite door

This first video will be followed by eleven others in the months to come, as part of a year-long campaign to increase brand awareness, and help the fabricator’s installer clients promote XtremeDoor to end-users.

Based on independent tests and an upgrade to the Ultion cylinder lock as standard, Solidor confirms its claim to be the most secure composite door on the market.

With a bespoke Yale 5-point lock, tripled-sealed outer frame and stainless steel hardware backed by a 25-year guarantee, XtremeDoor is renowned industry-wide for its robustness and reliability. The door has withstood rigorous weather testing by Winkhaus laboratories, brutal security testing by Greater Manchester Police and has been proven to be 19% more thermally efficient than the solid timber core composite door and 17% more thermally efficient than the traditional timber panelled door. An independent test house put Solidor and two market leaders through the new, more demanding PAS24 cut test. Solidor passed, but two doors representing 7 out of 10 composite doors on the market failed the test in under 90 seconds. Based on this, Solidor claimed it was ‘almost certainly’ the most secure door on the market. In January, Solidor announced it was now selling Ultion, the most secure cylinder lock, as standard and has improved its claim to be ‘The most secure composite door’. Solidor passes the new PAS24 cut test, so it’s compliant with

Solidor CEO Gareth Mobley says: “The industry has been talking about security and Approved Document Q for the best part of a year, and I’m pleased the industry is taking action to upgrade the security it offers homeowners. “The changes to the PAS24 cut test aren’t limited to hole size. A tester can now cut anywhere up to 700mm above or below the lock, so that’s most of the door. And the test applies to key/key locks where before it was thumb turns only. “The new PAS24:2016 cut test will start to come into force from March 2016,” adds Gareth, “and is much more demanding than that required by PAS24:2012. It means some manufacturers have to work on their door construction to make sure they pass the new test.” To find out more about Solidor visit http://www.solidor.co.uk follow @SolidorLtd, or call 01782 950 941.

Entrance® Champions Totally Tailored Composite

Door Solutions

Entrance® is the totally tailored composite door solution that enables fabricators to supply their own unique composite doors without the stress or expense of sourcing and stock-holding.

Distinction Doors’ 70mm Double Rebated Composite Door Proving Increasingly Attractive To Fabricators

Entrance puts fabricators in complete control every step of the way by supplying all the components they need to make a top quality composite door designed to fit the fabricator’s frame and delivered to meet the customer’s tight time schedule.

Distinction Doors launched its 70mm door in 2014 and demand has been increasing ever since. For Andy Grogan, Distinction’s National Sales Manager, there are many reasons why more and more fabricators are turning to Distinction’s 70mm solution to meet the growing demand for high performance, highly energy efficient composite doors across all markets.

Up to 19% more energy efficient than timber doors, Entrance composite doors offer great looking doors with high quality hardware and multi-point locks so fabricators can sell the doors homeowners want. With the production process streamlined, the end product is unique to the fabricator, combining good looks with all the practical benefits homeowners demand.

First and foremost it’s vital the addition of this product is as trouble-free as possible. This starts with the ease with which it can be added to workflows. “Our 70mm composite door is compatible with all existing 70mm PVC-u systems, which gives it a wealth of advantages,” Andy comments. “For example, PVC-u fabricators will find that the same hardware and furniture can be used across both systems for ultimate flexibility.” When it comes to machining, providing fabricators have an edge bander that will open up to accommodate the 70mm door thickness, fabricators who machine inhouse only need limited additional tooling to enable them to create a gasket retention groove. “We can assist fabricators by writing the

necessary CNC programme based on an SCM machine,” says Andy. “Failing that, we can offer a prepping service based on the required PVC-u profile specification.” Glazing is similarly straightforward. “The 70mm glazing system is cosmetically no different to the snap cassette system used on our 44.5mm composite door,” says Andy. “When used on a 70mm door, the inner and outer connectors are mated using simple connectors that have a de-glaze ability designed in.” Distinction Doors also offers comprehensive technical support for fabricators adding the 70mm door range. Andy says, “Our technical team works with customers to put together machining specifications for options including their choice of PVC-u outer frame and sash system, hardware and furniture and low PVC-u and aluminium thresholds, as well as assisting with any training requirements. Furthermore, for customers needing assistance with developing marketing materials, support is available from Distinction’s inhouse marketing department.” www.distinctiondoors.co.uk

“We’ve developed this totally bespoke service in response to feedback from fabricators,” explains Entrance General Manager Gregory Kelly. “They say they want the flexibility to create their own composite door ranges using the profile they use without the need to hold high levels of expensive stock of door slabs, hardware and glass.” “Not only does this save them precious time and hassle,” says Gregory, “it’s good for cash flow too because they don’t have to lock up their cash in holding stock for when they need it. With the variability in demand for some components this can be incredibly costly.” www.entranceway.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016 45

Bristol’s Fastest Growing Fabricator Launches Two Luxury Patio Doors Bristol’s fastest growing trade fabricator, The Window Outlet, have kicked off their second year in business with the launch of two luxury aluminium patio doors. Both made with Reynaers profile, the Concept Patio® 130 (CP130) and the Concept Patio® 155 (CP155) are available from The Window Outlet on quick lead times and powder coated in any RAL colour.

Managing director Ben Warren discusses the launch: “We already offer an extensive range of aluminium and PVC-u products, and the CP130 and CP155 are strong additions to our portfolio. There is a growing demand for high-end aluminium products in the domestic sector, and the new Reynaers doors will help our trade customers when they’re trying 46 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

to win more ambitious projects. We’ve already had a number of enquiries and are now looking to roll the doors out to the trade on a much larger scale.” Out of the two doors, the CP155 is the premium option. It’s an insulating slide and lift-slide system designed to create maximal glass areas and suit the requirements for low energy buildings. The door can accommodate vent weights up to 400kg, allows for large dimensions and has various opening possibilities, giving real design freedom. A minimalistic middle section makes the CP155 the perfect sliding system for contemporary architecture, while a low threshold improves the building accessibility. The CP130 meanwhile is a high-

ly insulated slide and lift-slide system that can accommodate a vent weight up to 300kg and allows the construction of large and stable sliding windows and doors. A special corner solution makes it possible to open up spaces without any fixed corner element, creating a perfect and clear continuity between the indoor and outdoor spaces. “If installers would like a quote, we guarantee to get back to them within 24 hours, as long as they complete one of our trade order forms,” Ben added. Established in September 2014 by experienced industry professionals Ben Warren and Clive Uppington, The Window Outlet are now firmly established as one of the South West’s most prominent trade fabricators. The company turned over £1m in their first year of trading and are well on course to beat that record in 2015-16. For more information visit www.the-window-outlet.co.uk or call 0117 405 8488

PRODUCT NEWS Aluminium door specialist AluFoldDirect has launched its first range of Secured by Design (SBD), thermally efficient commercial doors, in order to meet the growing demand amongst specifiers for high-quality SBD-accredited solutions.

AluFoldDirect Opens Its Doors to Commercial Installers with SBD Solution

The company has seen rapid growth in aluminium bi-fold doors and is now putting its expertise in aluminium towards the commercial sector. The new AluFoldDirect commercial door offers a durable, thermally efficient and secure solution that can be tailored to suit regular usage, emergency and anti-panic requirements, or a mag lock variant for maximum protection. All AluFoldDirect thermal commercial doors are Secured by Design accredited, Q Mark accredited and Document Q-compliant, having passed PAS23, PAS24 and BS EN1627 standards. They offer real thermal efficiency and can incorporate a range of performance insulated glass unit options. The robust construction and variety of security options with the AluFoldDirect commercial door make it ideal for high-traffic buildings in the public sector – such as schools or hospitals – or private businesses, such as hotels or larger corporate organisations. The range is being launched following research by AluFoldDirect, which suggests that – following the legal requirement to use Secured by Design in certain new builds and refurbishments – specifiers across the country are increasingly being asked to adopt SBD as a matter of course. Craig Miller, Managing Director of AluFoldDirect, explains that: “Many architects and specifiers are turning to the obvious benefits of SBD-approved products as they make the process more transparent and easy, right the way through to the client.

“As Building Regulations head more in the direction of fully accredited and certified products for high-value installations (such as schools, installers must be able to prove they have installed to the standard specified. “SBD is a sure-fire way of getting products installed that have withstood the rigours of extensive testing, under the gaze of a respected authority,” Craig adds.

Craig Miller. “We’re extremely confident in the design and manufacture of our range of commercial doors to offer safe passage where desired and real protection when needed. Frankly, you’d need a tank to bring down our max-protection door.” Craig anticipates that the momentum towards SBD-accredited solutions will not be reversed.

To secure SBD status, the commercial doors tested include widths on single doors of up to 1250mm wide and 2350mm high and double doors to 2400 wide. Tested designs also incorporate emergency escape devices and controlled lock entrance devices.

“Secured by Design is fast becoming the go-to standard for the industry and will become common practice. We’re providing a commercial door that ticks all the boxes: it is easy to specify, easy to install and will provide long-lasting results, so you don’t have to worry.

AluFoldDirect will work with architects, specifiers and developers to select the right door for each access point. In some occasions this will have been legislated for. “We’ll look at your plans on a door by door basis. The duty of care rests with the manufacturer to ensure a solution is fit for purpose, so you might say the responsibility literally ends at my door,” confirms

“Our new commercial doors are only the start of our commitment to SBD. AluFoldDirect is now also finalising the arrangements to launch our fully accredited SBD window range also, having successfully undergone the product testing phase.” To find out more, visit www.alufolddirect.co.uk. Residence 9 Is Perfect For Conservation Areas Conservation areas are a No Go zone for most window companies. Their windows are rejected by Planners. With over 8,000 conservation areas across the UK and a further 150 or so new areas added every year, it’s a growing problem. That’s why Residence 9 (R9) is growing fast. Its authentic looks and outstanding performance are designed for conservation areas. R9, the super-premium composite window system, is designed to match the drawings found in Article 4 directions, the Planner’s bible for conservation areas. It’s what Planners use when deciding if windows look authentic or not. The directions focus on the look of the windows and how they work, not the material. Dan Gill, MD of Systems Company, The Residence Collection and designer of R9, says: “I spotted a gap in the market for high performing windows in areas restricted by conservation rules. Planners refer to Article 4 directions which set out the dimensions and detailing of how windows should look. They don’t specify what they’re made

of. Using these specifications, I designed Residence 9 windows, ‘the way they’re meant to be’.” R9 is foiled inside and out, and with a range of 42 colour combinations in stock, homeowners select the colour combinations, inside and out that sets off their home to advantage. R9 is a beautiful window, flush outside with equal sightlines and mechanical jointing; decorative detailing inside, because that’s what homeowners see most of the time. It’s designed to be highly secure, and with nine chambers it’s highly energy efficient, achieving A++ window energy ratings. “Properties in conservation areas and homes with character are no longer limited to replacing old timber windows with new timber windows,” adds Dan. “R9 gives homeowners the choice to enhance the look and performance of their home with beautiful long-lasting low-maintenance windows and doors.” For more about Residence 9 visit www.residence9.co.uk

Just two months after its official launch, RegaLead is delighted to announce an overwhelmingly positive response to its new Georgian lead profile, so much so that new sizes and colour options have already been added to the range. Seen for the first time at the company’s open day in December 2015, the new profile replicates the look of aluminium Georgian bars, but with a host of additional benefits, including the in-house manufacture of even complex grids, and a significant reduction in the costs associated with face fixed astragals. The specialist powder coating technology, meanwhile, ensures the product is suitable for external use. Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director at RegaLead comments: “We’re really pleased with the response we’ve had so far to our new Georgian lead profile. In line with demand we have already added a 22mm option to the range, as well as four popular new colours across both the Georgian and standard lead profiles: White, 9001 Cream, 7016 Anthracite, and Chartwell Green. It is certainly generating a lot of interest, with many customers telling us they love its flexibility for use in a variety of what might otherwise prove problematic applications. View Of Priceless Artworks When the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, the Netherlands staged “Pleasure & Piety,” a unique exhibition of works by Joachim Wtewael, Guardian Clarity™ anti-reflective glass was selected to provide the perfect solution in terms of protection, low reflection and high light transmission. Joachim Wtewael (1566-1638) was praised as one of the greatest Dutch painters of his time. A unique feature of Wtewael’s was that he produced a number of works on copper. Pleasure & Piety is the first-ever large monographic exhibition of his works. their protection was a key requirement in creating the displays. This was achieved by placing the works behind glass in specially designed showcases. However, it was equally imperative that the glass should not interfere with the visitors’ enjoyment of the relatively small paintings. GRDPR023bTraditionally, glass is used to create a barrier to protect its encased environment. However, selecting the wrong glass can impact the overall aesthetics by affecting unwanted glare, reflection, and by fading the original colours of the artwork. Working together with Glashandel van der Vlugt, a specialist in museum displays, the Centraal Museum selected Guardian Clarity anti-reflective glass. Created by using state of the art mag-

Kristine Kavelaars, Senior Project Coordinator at the Centraal Museum said: “These works are very special and although they are centuries old, they still look fantastic. We needed to strike a balance between delivering the highest levels of security for these often small and delicate works whilst meeting our visitors’ desire to get as close as possible. Moreover, as custodians of our cultural heritage, we need to ensure that future generations too will be able to enjoy these masterpieces. We achieved this with Guardian Clarity glass.” Describing Guardian Clarity as “unexpected glass”, Ms Kavelaars added: “I have to say that I had never seen anything like the ‘no glass’ effect. Many of our visitors, too, were not aware of the glass layer until it stopped them from touching the paintings. As a result we had to clean the glass quite frequently.” An interesting point is that whilst the exhibition has moved to the USA, the glass has remained in Utrecht – where it can be re-used in future exhibitions. Henk van der Vlugt, owner of Glashandel van der Vlugt was responsible for designing the displays, and has worked with Guardian Clarity before. “The main reason for choosing the product for this solution was its performance: the quality of the anti-reflective coating. An additional consideration though was the fast on-time delivery Guardian® was able to offer through its dealer network.”

SWISSPACER Air is launched at Fensterbau

SWISSPACER Launches Innovative New Product At Fensterbau Leading warm edge spacer bar manufacturer SWISSPACER is launching SWISSPACER Air, a new innovative device that regulates the air pressure in sealed units and prevents sealed unit breakdowns caused by changes in altitude. Air fits unobtrusively into the spacer bar and sealant and relieves build ups in air pressure inside the unit that causes unit failure. It will be displayed on SWISSPACER’s stand at the Fensterbau Frontale trade show in Nürnberg on 1619 March. SWISSPACER Air is an innovative valve that sits in the spacer bar. It equalises air pressure differences between the insulating glass unit and surrounding atmosphere. stalled in variable climatic conditions or mountainous regions. Until now, window fabricators have had to carefully consider the difference in air pressure between the production site and point of installation. If the windows are to be installed at high altitude the performance of the glass unit can suffer because expanding air inside the unit puts pressure on the panes of glass. That can damage the seal which allows moisture in. SWISSPACER Air resolves this problem completely. Invisibly integrated into the secondary sealant, SWISSPACER Air is a discreet component that helps to regulate the air pressure between the panes of glass as it changes with altitude. Another key benefit is that SWISS-

PACER Air can be retrofitted to previously installed windows with SWISSPACER warm edge spacer bars to ensure long-term performance of the unit. Head of Sales & Marketing UK & Ireland, John Cooper comments: “SWISSPACER Air is a unique innovation and the perfect solution for mountainous countries such as Austria, Switzerland, France or Italy. Further tests will confirm its suitability for the UK market too. We will show it at the FIT Show in April on Stand 324, so come and see!” SWISSPACER’s leading 32mm wide spacer bar and extensive colour options will also feature at Fensterbau. Its one head Roweldo welding machine will be in operation, and there will be demonstrations of Caluwin – SWISSPACER’s energy saving tool that now also calculates efficiency classes for Passivhaus windows. The project has been the recipient of both regional and national awards from the LABC Building Excellence Awards. Jack Aluminium’s customer Logic Aluminium, a Nottingham-based specialist in the design, manufacture and installation of commercial aluminium solutions, was hired to provide commercial doors and curtain walling for the Boardwalk. 56 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

Mercia Marina Logic 11 “This was a large and complex job requiring the installation of doors and curtain walling, and we knew that Jack Aluminium offered the right solution,” comments Murray Pullen of Logic Aluminium. Jack Aluminium worked closely with Logic to tailor its offering to suit the specific environment at Mercia Marina during the construction phase in 2014. The Jack Door TD68 was designed to reduce fabrication time and wastage, while being thermally efficient. It is also a Secured by Design approved product when manufactured using Jack Aluminium’s technical information, further meeting the demands of modern commercial property developers and owners. This is complemented by the Jack Aluminium Curtain Wall Suite

which utilises a combination of aluminium and PVCu to assist the building performance, in terms of thermal efficiency and long-term aesthetic appearance. Aluminium does not rust or warp and can be selected in a number of finishes. The Boardwalk was officially opened in October 2014 and immediately caught the attention of the building industry for its success in boosting the profile of an already popular location. After being voted overall winner at the LABC Building Excellence Awards’ East Midlands regional ceremony in July 2015, the project went on to be crowned Britain’s Best Small Commercial Building at the national awards in October. “Aluminium’s fusion of durability and aesthetics make it the ideal material for high-end commercial projects like the Boardwalk at Mercia Marina,” comments Jeff Pearson, Sales & Marketing Director at Jack Aluminium. “Logic Aluminium have done a superb job that really complements the overall development and we’re extremely proud to be associated with this award-winning venue.” www.jackaluminium.co.uk

Senior Launches New Aluminium Series 2 Window System Senior Architectural Systems has launched a new aluminium window system that offers enhanced aesthetics, improved thermal performance and flexible solutions for a variety of site installations. The new Aluminium Series 2 casement windows have been developed to provide exceptional design flexibility. Featuring attractive slim sightlines, the new system can accommodate a variety of glazing widths from 28mm to 44mm depending on weight. Designed to perform as good as it looks, the new Aluminium Series 2 system boasts impressive thermal credentials and has the potential to achieve U-values as low as 0.95 W/ m2K when calculated as a CEN

standard commercial window. Ideally suited for a variety of applications, the innovate construction of Senior’s new Aluminium Series 2 system allows it to be supplied and installed unglazed for the glazing to be completed internally on site. As the internal beads can also be fitted later on in the construction programme and glass deliveries can go directly to site, the risks associated with site damage, double handling and delivery weights are significantly reduced. Long-term maintenance programmes can also benefit from the use of the new system as the units can be easily replaced without the need to remove the

vents. Similarly, if the internal beads become damaged or need replacing in the future, they can be accessed without the need to remove the window. The Aluminium Series 2 windows have also been designed to perfectly complement Senior’s popular Hybrid Series 2 timber composite windows, which features aluminium externally and engineered timber internally. By boasting identical external sight lines and appearance, both windows systems can be specified on the same project without compromising on achieving a uniform design. Get A Handle On It Norman Berrill, Business Development Manager at Sealco,

looks at the latest trends in window and door hardware

of technical knowhow to help streamline the decision-making process. This is even more important these days, given the rise of high-spec solutions such as bi-fold or lift & slide doors. Similarly, new materials bring fresh challenges – for example, the rise of engineered timbers such as Accoya have particular characteristics that help to determine the best hardware for the job.

With FIT Show rapidly approaching, the glazing industry is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to view the latest innovations in window and door technology. Yet while you’re being wowed by the latest advances in materials and systems, don’t forget to take a closer look at the hardware that adds those essential finishing touches. From handles to hinges, no door or window would be able to perform without the right hardware in place; likewise, with a wide variety of aesthetically pleasing options available, hardware can also enhance the ‘wow factor’ of a home. With so much choice, it’s often difficult for fabricators and install58 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

ers to know where to look when sourcing their hardware needs, but a useful rule of thumb is this: it’s all about the service. A reputable hardware partner will be able to advise and recommend on the best solutions for any given window or door, bringing years

Working with the right supplier will also ensure reliability of delivery. After all, the last thing a manufacturer needs is a drop in the supply of crucial components, so it’s vital to take into account the distributor’s stock holding capacity, sourcing capability and delivery parameters.

Hardware / Safety & Security At the most basic level, there are two routes towards hardware procurement: to deal direct with the individual manufacturers, or to work with a distributor. The direct approach is fine provided you know exactly what you want; maybe you’re loyal to a specific brand, or the parts you need are particularly rare or unusual. Yet, in all likelihood, that won’t apply to every single piece of hardware you need, meaning you’ll need to spend considerable time in researching the market to find the right partners for every item. Once you use multiple suppliers, you’ll need to deal with the added complexity of having several invoices… which will likely add up to a large hardware bill given that you won’t benefit from economies of scale. Logistics also becomes more problematic, as you’re committed to receiving multiple deliveries into your factory. Managing the Goods In yard becomes a matter of juggling a fleet of lorries and vans to avoid frustrating bottlenecks.

Norman Berrill, Business Development Manager at Sealco

In contrast, a hardware distributor brings the convenience and stability of a single-source supply chain. One invoice, one delivery – and access to a wider range of product. The biggest distributors will attract the biggest hardware brands, saving valuable time on research because the distributor has already done their homework to find the best possible solutions for any given need. Likewise, by working regularly with different products, you’ll benefit from the distributor’s experience in solving problems. If you have an issue, the chances are that the distributor will have encountered it before and be able to walk you through the answer. Finally, a distributor will have an extensive supply network that takes the hassle out of delivery. Sealco, for example, deliv-

ers anywhere in the UK and will support customers wherever they are. Indeed, my role since joining Sealco in late 2015 is to develop relationships with new and existing customers in order to provide the best possible service when it comes to hardware.

Sealco is exhibiting for the first time in order to demonstrate the breadth of brands and products we can offer. So look out for our ‘warehouse on a stand’ in Hall 2, where I’ll be delighted to speak to you about your hardware needs.

“We don’t expect to have to pay out,” adds Steve. “But there’s a counter on our website, so you’ll know if we do!”

Ultion has achieved Sold Secure Diamond (SSD), a real-life security test most cylinders can’t pass. MLA locksmiths try to break the cylinder in any way they know, using a vast choice of tools. And they can spend as long as they like doing it.

Delivering multiple benefits to fabricators, installers and homeowners alike, the new maximum security Platinum 3 Star cylinder has been designed to protect homes with its anti-snap, anti-bump, anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-pull technology. Its TS007:2014 3 star accreditation means this Anti-Snap, British kitemarked cylinder offers an innovative solution that will deter even the most determined intruder. To achieve the highest TS007:2014 3 Star accreditation the Secured by Design Yale Platinum 3 star cylinder has been independently tested by BSI (British Standards Institution), against known cylinder attack methods. The benefit of the 3 star accreditation means no additional security door furniture is necessary to achieve the highest level within the standard. Paul Atkinson, Sales Director for Yale Door and Window Solutions, said: “We’re delighted to offer

another cylinder in our range that has achieved the maximum security, TS007 3 Star rating. This high security cylinder offers maximum protection for homeowners and social housing residents across the UK and Eire. The Yale Platinum 3 Star cylinder can work together with other door furniture, such as the recently launched Yale 2 Star cylinder pull, to make up a door set of superior security or used with any furniture of choice whilst still meeting the standards.” The Yale Platinum 3 Star Cylinder has a sacrificial break away front section designed to release if attacked, maintaining the cylinder security within the door Available in both brass and nickel finishes, the cylinder has a horizontal keyway and comes supplied with three, dimple cut keys as standard and each comes supplied with a key code identification card for ease of purchasing additional keys when needed. CWG Choices customers can now upgrade to Ultion on all its doors. Ultion is Brisant Secure’s flagship high security cylinder lock. CWG Choices Director Jason Wilder says, “I’d heard about Ultion from a few different sources, including Solidor, so I looked into what it might add to our range. When I saw Ultion’s accreditations, I was impressed. We had to take it on.” Ultion has achieved Sold Secure Diamond (SSD). It’s passed a series of real-life security tests carried out by Master Locksmiths Association locksmiths. There is no time limit on SSD tests, and if the cylinder breaks, it fails. If it doesn’t, it passes. Most cylinders fail the test within 1½ minutes. The MLA locksmiths stopped trying to break in after 2½ hours. “The best part about Ultion, aside from its impressive security, is its versatility,” explains Jason. “It means that we can offer it on all our doors, no matter how thick or how thin, so every one of our customers can buy any of our doors with ultimate security.” Brisant Secure CEO Steve Stewart says: “Ultion isn’t just for one type of door, it’s designed so anyone can sell real security on all their doors. reduce the average hinge fitting time on each door by almost 50%, and when you’re making as many doors as we are, that’s a hugely significant saving. “It’s not just about speed of fitting though – the ProSecure hinge has lots of other benefits which we’re keen to pass on to our customers. For instance, it’s available in a range of colours to suit changing consumer tastes and it’s easy to adjust onsite – from the front and not just from the side.” Endurance Doors is the fastest growing solid and secure composite door company in the UK and attributes much of that success to its strong product proposition and the fact that it chooses to partner with quality, trusted names in the industry like Mila.

Endurance Doors has become the first composite door manufacturer in the UK to start using Mila’s fastest to fit ProSecure door hinge. Mila has produced a new version of the hugely popular hinge specifically for composite doors and Endurance Doors has leapt ahead of the competition by becoming the first in the UK to start offering it to customers as its standard flag hinge option. Mila’s ProSecure hinge made waves when it was launched last

year because it is a one piece unit which can be fitted straight from the box in less than a minute. In test installations before launch, Endurance Doors’ fabrication team were immediately able to reduce the average time taken to fit three flag hinges onto a door from six and a half to less than five minutes and is now on target to get that time down even further to less than four minutes. Managing Director Stephen Nadin said: “Once we’re in full production, we expect to be able to

Mila’s Managing Director Richard Gyde added: “The ProSecure hinge is an ongoing success story. It has already won significant market share in PVC-U doors and now, with the launch of this new composite door version, it looks set to do the same in that sector as well. “It’s a product which perfectly demonstrates many of Mila’s strengths – it’s cleverly designed and engineered with tangible benefits for both the fabricator and the installer and it is backed by the best service and supply chain in the industry.”

Hardware / Safety & Security Titan AF windows is very smooth regardless of how many locking points there are. Each AF window includes a Sash Lift Roller to ensure the sash locates into the frame smoothly and correctly. This, coupled with the KoPiBo cams, reduces wear and tear and ensures that the user enjoys easy operation even after many years.

VBH Stocks Siegenia

Titan AF Tilt & Turn Hardware specialist VBH now stocks Titan AF, the latest tilt and turn system from Siegenia. Titan AF is available in both surface fit and ‘Axxent 24+’ concealed hinge options, and has versions to suit PVCu, timber and aluminium windows with sash weights of up to 150Kg. Titan AF has been designed with the manufacturer, installer and end user in mind. The hardware clamps into the Eurogroove prior to screw fixing and VBH advises that the ‘click-on’ coupling feature makes the hardware extremely easy to fit. The security level can be easily upgraded from ‘basic’ to RC-1, RC-2 or PAS24 level by changing just a few components. The system features KoPiBo roller cams that act as a standard roller cam or a mushroom cam depending on the striker plate used. It is height adjustable to automatically compensate for clearance tolerances and expansion and contraction in the window frame caused by dramatic temperature fluctuations. As KoPiBo cams have a roller action the closing action of

The concealed hinge solution features Axxent 24+ hinge components. Axxent 24+’s low stack height helps overcome air gap clearance issues but does not adversely affect the hinge’s strength. Sashes weighing up to 150Kg can be accommodated without the need for extra support. This ability to carry heavier sashes with minimal hardware is becoming more desirable with the emergence of triple glazing and as designers favour larger, therefore heavier, windows to bring added light into buildings. Fitting of Axxent 24+ is further speeded up by the fact that no jigs are required. The hinges simply locate into the frame corners. VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson says ‘Titan AF has been tried and tested in continental Europe before Siegenia developed the tilt before turn, or TBT, version used here in the UK. The Axxent 24+ hinges are a brand new development. Their load bearing capabilities and compact size, along with the fact that no jigs are required to fit them are sure to gain a lot of admirers amongst fabricators, installers and specifiers. ‘All three of our tilt and turn hardware partners have introduced exciting new systems over the last few months. We’ve built our business on supplying our customers with the best solutions for their needs and this is clearly demonstrated by the top quality TBT options that we can offer.’ More information on the VBH range can be obtained by calling 01634 263300.

effectively fabricate either a lever/lever or a lever/pad system from just one lock.” The high specification door lock is a practical alternative to traditional twin spindle locks which require a longer back plate for all types of operation. It incorporates a standard 92mm centre, which accommodates both long and short back plate handles and either a solid spindle to create a lever/lever lock or a split spindle to create a lever/pad lock. This solution is a versatile alternative to traditional twin spindle locks which need to use a longer back plate regardless of the operation of the lock.

Like the rest of the Excalibur range, the Excalibur split spindle door lock has been developed to provide exceptional levels of security for the homeowner. Benefitting from three hooks, two steel anti-lift bolts and three rollers, it is designed to provide trouble-free performance. For convenience, the Excalibur split spindle door lock is easily extendable. It utilises a gearbox which is sprung to overcome the need for costly sprung handle sets. A wide choice of components, including a one piece keep, individual hook roller and centre hook latch and roller keeps, is also available. An added advantage of the door lock for installers is its flexibility after installation; the operation of the door set can easily be altered by simply changing the handles and spindles without having to change the lock or re-route the door sash. www.kenricks.co.uk

“In fact, we got the idea from one of our biggest customers who challenged us to prove GRIP’s strength by carrying a window up a ladder with just the handle as some of their installers do. We went one better and got our Test Centre engineers to carry a 1000mm x 800mm 25kg window up and down a ladder over and over again using just the handle. Of course, at the end, there were no signs of damage or weakness.” Obviously, GRIP has been extensively performance tested before launch to more than 60kg and has been successfully cycle tested

50,000 times. Mila confidently states that it outperforms not only similar priced aluminium handles in terms of strength but also more expensive zinc, but also thinks that, for lots of customers, seeing will be believing.

Richard Gyde adds: “We’ve invested a huge amount in making GRIP green by reducing the embodied carbon, and we’ve included innovations such as colour options and an anti-microbial finish, but we certainly haven’t compromised on strength or performance, and we’re on a mission to prove that.” The GRIP handle will be on display at the FIT show with another demonstration of strength which Mila says will surprise a few visitors. www.mila.co.uk

Yale Launches TS007

2 Star Cylinder Pull Yale Door and Window Solutions has launched a TS007 2 Star cylinder pull, designed to improve traditional door style aesthetics and provide superior security. The stainless steel, finger pull escutcheon is suitable for use on timber and composite doors and can help to create an authentic ‘period feel’, visually replicating the look of a traditional Yale rim latch, when used in conjunction with other door hardware. The cylinder pull is 2 Star accredited, meeting the TS007 standard

for protection against the latest forms of attack, and can be used as part of a PAS 24 door set. This enables fabricators and installers to comply with Approved Document Q, requiring that all residential doors meet or exceed British Standard PAS 24.

Available in chrome, brass and satin chrome finishes, the 2 Star cylinder pull is Yale branded on both the internal and external escutcheon. This recognised mark of trust signifies superior strength and provides a visual deterrent to potential thieves.

For maximum security, the cylinder pull is recommended for use alongside Yale’s 1 Star Superior cylinder or the 3 Star Platinum cylinder, which launches soon.

The cylinder pull is backed by Yale’s 10 year guarantee and has been tested to 500 hours of natural salt spray to deliver extensive corrosion resistance, meeting the BS EN1670 standard.

The external pull has a sacrificial break point which snaps under attack, meaning it cannot be removed from the door and cylinder remains protected.

Origin to Present

its New ‘Sale Safe’ System at FIT Show 2016

Origin will be presenting its revolutionary new quotation and ordering system, Sale Safe, for the first time at the FIT Show 2016. The British manufacturer of bi-folding doors and windows will also unveil its new innovative ranges of blind systems, previously unseen in the UK. Designed to drastically streamline the process of quoting, ordering and general admin, the new Sale Safe software can create projects, send prices and order products instantly. As a result, Origin’s network of trade agents will spend less time chasing quotes and filing, leading to increased capacity, improved customer service levels and closing deals like never before. Origin will use the FIT Show, held at The Telford International Centre on 12- 14April 2016, to demonstrate the simplicity of this new ordering process, with attendees encouraged to experience it first-hand. In an industry where a quote or order can take up to seven days, due to the manual inputting required, Sale Safe removes the quotation waiting time, as prices can be retrieved instantly. The administrative element of Sale Safe has also been hugely improved in comparison to other ordering systems. Instead of multiple order numbers for multiple products for one customer, projects are now created pertaining to one homeowner, and an unlimited amount of doors and windows can be assigned to this one project. On top of the instantaneous and administrative benefits, Sale Safe offers distinct advantages to users. These include an intelligent cascade system, which allows an overall project preference, such as colour, to be changed and pushed through to all products in a project at the click of a button instead of manually

Ben Brocklesby, Sales and Marketing Director at Origin, comments: “We have designed the brand new Sale Safe system in house with the absolute intention of making the lives of our trade agents much easier. The simplicity in design and streamline of processes means that the faster they can place orders, the more projects can be completed quickly and accurately, allowing installers to improve their overall customer service and satisfaction levels. We feel that the FIT Show is the perfect place to demonstrate our system, allowing visitors to get hands-on, using the technology for themselves. We very much look forward to meeting everyone once the doors open.” In addition to demonstrating Sale Safe, Origin will be showcasing its renowned window system, the only window in the industry to feature an internally and externally flush casement. Uniquely designed so the sash sits perfectly in line with the frame, and with no overlapping profile, it ensures a smart and elegant appearance. The clean and simple design therefore lends itself to all home styles including traditional townhouses, new builds and projects under strict planning regulations. The Origin Window also offers an optional upgrade of space age technology, Aerogel, for out of this world thermal efficiency, making it capable of achieving an energy rating of A++. Origin has exclusivity on the revolutionary Aerogel, and this ground-breaking material is used for insulation in the likes of spacecraft’s and spacesuits. Aerogel is completely unique in its properties, not affected by age or moisture, and provides major energy savings for the life of a home. When combined with the Origin Window, it can boost the window’s thermal efficiency by up to 67 per cent to achieve a certified U-Value of 0.9. Visitors to the Origin stand (235) will also be able to experience Origin’s entire new ranges of made-tomeasure blinds. The new blind types include Lutron electric roller blinds, Pleated and Roman blinds amongst others, ensuring that Origin’s network of trade agent’s are able to offer the ultimate soft furnishing solutions for additional profit making opportunities. Of course, the industry-favourite and firmly established Origin bi-folding doors will be on display. Cleverly designed, beautifully made and exquisitely finished, the entire Origin Home range will come together to be showcased in a quite frankly show-stopping stand. Other Lumi styles will include two doors, a 5-leaf bi-fold in addition to a large Lumi casement designed to show the product at its best.

This FIT Show Apeer will have the opportunity to talk to the professional window community for the first time about its Award-Winning Lumi window system, which was described by the G Awards judges as ‘A product that truly re-invents the window’ when they voted it ‘New Product of the Year’ recently.

Apeer has been manufacturing composite doors for more than 12 years now, becoming a pioneer in the sector in the process. New at The FIT Show will be the EsiFit slab in two styles for larger fabricators to consider as a genuine alternative, together with four Apeer70 doorsets.

Lumi is a complete range of customisable, matching frameless windows and bi-folding, patio and residential doors. The design incorporates 70mm of insulation between two panels of WPC material – as well as a fixed panel, insulated roof and Synseal-profile doors and windows in PVC or Warmcore. This means the garden room has that ‘timber’ look inside and outside but with an added degree of thermal protection, so that the building can be used as a summerhouse, home office, ‘man cave’ or gym – in fact, whatever you want it to be. “Our philosophy is to deliver new composite solutions that will fire

Registration Figures Double

As Fit Fever Builds

Year-on-year visitor registration figures are running at more than double those recorded for a similar period in the build up to the 2014 FIT Show. Figures are also way ahead of the Award winning launch show that took place in 2013, adding to the excitement that we are heading for a record

event when it takes place in April.

Adding to the optimism are the website statistics: almost 30% more users are accessing The FIT Show website compared with a corresponding period for 2014, with an exceptionally

low bounce rate (the number of visitors that leave a site without interacting with it) of just 2.29%. “The reasons for such exceptional figures can be manifold,” said The FIT Show’s Matthew Glover. “The obvious factors of a record number of exhibitors coupled with hundreds of new products and services expected to be revealed for the first time are an obvious pull. And of course a positive outlook in the market is also contributing.”

ExtrudaSeal’s Complete Range Of Gaskets Is A Perfect FIT For Aluminium Fabricators

years – end-users are now a lot more knowledgeable and want windows and doors in an extensive range of colour options and finishes, allowing them to shape their own personal ‘grand design’.

National supplier of gaskets for the aluminium window and door market, ExtrudaSeal, will be exhibiting its comprehensive variety of flexible extrusions at the FIT Show in April, on stand 342. Part of the Euroseal Group, ExtrudaSeal has distinguished itself as one of the leading providers of gaskets, currently supplying approximately half the aluminium window and door market with innovative sealing solutions at very competitive prices – and, as sales director Paul James explains, the company’s FIT Show presence is yet another chance to promote the many benefits of dealing directly with a gasket manufacturer. “The FIT Show is a great opportunity to show aluminium fabricators just how much they can save by buying weather seals directly from ExtrudaSeal, rather than as part of a package deal, with their profile systems. By cutting out the middleman and dealing directly with us, we estimate fabricators can save anywhere between 30 and 50%.” “What’s more, as a specialised extrusions provider, we’re much more attuned to shifting market trends. Demand for colour has exploded over the past few 76 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

“While most systems companies will only provide gaskets in standard colours, usually white, black and grey, at ExtrudaSeal, we can offer them in any RAL colour to match the aluminium frames, giving our fabricator-clients a USP that really makes their offer stand out in the market place. It is this attention to detail that is helping their installer-customers appeal to the increasingly style-conscious consumers,” added Paul. The exhibition is also a good opportunity for the company to showcase its complex and innovative product portfolio that includes the exclusive Tri-Fin® wood pile, the result of a collaboration with Spanish extrusion firm TecSeal. Designed to improve weather tightness on uPVC, aluminium and timber windows and doors, the Tri-Fin®’s three-finned design allows for up to a 25% reduction in air infiltration compared with a single fin, and is only available in the UK through ExtrudaSeal. “If you’re an aluminium fabricator interested in the latest innovations in weather sealing solutions, or want to reduce manufacturing costs without compromising the quality of your windows and doors, or if you’re simply looking to add more value to your own range of products, come speak to the ExtrudaSeal team on stand 342 at the FIT Show in April to find out how we can help,” concluded Paul. Windowlink Get FIT For The Third Year Running Window industry software specialist, Windowlink, will be hitting April’s FIT show to promote its best-in-class design, sales and pricing applications. Operating from stand 356 at the Telford industry exhibition, the Gloucester-based developer will use laptops and tablets to show installers how its intuitive software can help them improve conversion rates, upsell more effectively, and convey trustworthiness and professionalism to end-users. Windowlink’s main applications, Vector for conservatories and orangeries and Focus for windows and doors, allow installers to create impressive 3D visualisations of their products, enabling

the homeowners to see exactly what they’re buying. A pricing module allows both installers and end-users to keep track of how much the proposed project would cost – a feature that is dramatically improving the relationship between salespeople and their prospect customers. “We’ve exhibited at the FIT Show on both previous occasions,” said Windowlink MD, Mark Dudley. “For us, it’s the perfect opportunity to show off our products – we always find that when installers get to see Vector and Focus in action, they’re very quickly won over by how easy they are to use, and the difference they can make to their sales.”

“Really, what we offer is a versatile, engaging twenty-first century alternative to the traditional sales brochure. We designed our applications to be about ‘showing rather than telling’. Vector and Focus take what would otherwise be a one-sided sales pitch and turn it into a collaboration between customer and installer. They immediately bring a sense of trust and transparency to the proceedings – the price of the proposed improvements is always visible, and both parties can work together to design a project that meets the homeowner’s budget.” “What’s more, they provide abundant opportunities for upselling. When a consumer can actually see that hardware upgrade, or that more luxurious window or door configuration applied to their own property, it’s much more likely to lead to a sale.” Windowlink’s FIT stand won’t just be about showcasing existing products, however – Mark hints at a number of new innovations set to be unveiled at the three-day event. “We’ve got a few surprises up our sleeve – you’ll have to come and find us at stand 365 in April to find out more, but popcorn and refreshments are a clear definite!” For more information visit www.windowlink.com or call 01452 348575

Winkhaus To Showcase

Top Three German Attractions At The FIT Show of multipoint locks specifically designed to provide a high security solution for double doors.” Suitable for any timber, aluminium and composite double door combination, the Winkhaus Grand Entrance range is a perfect fit for applications such as French door sets, or modern doors with an opening side panel. “We invite fabricators and installers to our stand to see the new innovations for themselves, and discover how our complex portfolio of locking solutions can help them gain a strong competitive advantage across multiple markets,” said Justin. “Visitors to our stand will also be able to see our new AV2 animation that explains in a nutshell how our most popular lock works.” Engineering innovation, beer and the popular ‘wurst’ are arguably three of the most well-known German trademarks, so it’s no surprise leading hardware specialist, Winkhaus, has chosen to showcase them at the FIT Show in April. Exhibiting on stand 244, Winkhaus will be presenting its newest innovation, the autoLock AV3, alongside the company’s other market leading locking solutions, including the very successful AV2 Family, and the Grand Entrance collection of high security multipoint locks. Featuring the new ‘daytime latch’ function, the AV3 multipoint autolock delivers added practicality for the end-user, by allowing the door to be opened from the outside without a key when activated. This is particularly useful when instant access is needed over a short period of time, for example when the homeowner is carrying in shopping bags. “The AV3 further expands our already comprehensive range of locking solutions, enabling our clients to offer yet more choice to their own customers, and placing them in an advantageous position in today’s competitive environment,” said Winkhaus Commercial Director, Justin Harris. “We’re delighted to be presenting the new autolock at the FIT Show, together with our Grand Entrance suite 80 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

Aside from product innovations, the Winkhaus stand will also boast a ‘German hospitality’ theme, with traditional German beer and sausages. “Being at the show means more than a business opportunity for us. It is also a chance for the window and door industry to catch up, discuss trends and share experiences, so we’ll make sure the Winkhaus stand provides a relaxed atmosphere for customers and companies interested in learning more about our products and services to enjoy,” explained Justin. There are even more reasons to drop by the Winkhaus stand at the Show, with visitors being given the chance to win one of three iPad Mini devices, just perfect to visualise the company’s brand new website – another exciting development to be revealed in April. Packed full of information on Winkhaus’ range of products and services, the new website will provide fabricators and installers with a comprehensive online resource. “As always, there’s plenty to see and do at our stand, and we welcome everyone interested in first-rate locking solutions to stop by and talk to our team. We look forward to seeing you there!” concluded Justin. For more information contact Winkhaus on 01536 316091, or visit www.winkhaus.co.uk

FIT SHOW “But I also want to see evidence of how a supplier will work with me, become my partner, and what commitment they will make to me for the longer term,” he said. IG Doors had chosen the FIT Show as the launch pad for its brand new composite door range for the trade – Truedor – which was backed by TV architect George Clarke. “We had such a range of people visiting our stand,” Richard Kirman said. “We had MDs and fitters and we could explain to all of them about the products and how we were going to market them.” It was this enthusiastic approach to the show that won Bradley Scott Windows as a Truedor stockist.

Andy Farrington: I Liked Truedor So Much I Took

The Fit Show Display! Partnerships forged at previous FIT Shows have continued to flourish, long after the media storm has died down, its organisers have claimed, proving that the exhibition as a must for any company wanting to make the most of the recovering economy. One such partnership is that which is shared between 2014 exhibitor IG Doors and Tamworth-based installer Bradley Scott Windows. IG Door’s Sales and Marketing Manager Richard Kirman and Bradley Scott Windows’ Andy Farrington were well-acquainted before the FIT Show opened in

June 2014, but the strength of the door supplier’s offering was not fully apparent until Andy had chance to compare what the market had to offer.

“I went to The FIT Show to see three or four companies that I had researched, but I also picked up more as I walked around,” Andy said. “It was important because I was finalising plans for the new showroom, and I wanted to make the most of the new site.” Andy said he wants to see new products at an exhibition, which help him to be ahead of the game and his competitors.

“I now have the display that was on the Truedor FIT Show stand in my showroom,” Andy said. “I wanted something special for my new site, something that offered the ‘wow’ factor, and IG Doors’ Truedor gallery display was superb. I got the whole Truedor concept the minute I saw it and had to have the display too. I signed immediately.” The relationship has burgeoned since, Richard explained. “Andy has become a centre of excellence for Truedor,” he said “We pass sales leads out to our trusted retailers and Andy is excellent at following these up. We even pass leads out to him when we don’t have an appointed installer, in the knowledge that he will deal with them professionally.” More than 175 further exhibitors can be seen at The Fabricator Installer Trade (FIT) Show which takes place at The International Centre Telford on the 12th, 13th and 14th April 2016. Eurocell Original game changers from

on stands AT13 and A70 This year’s FIT Show sees Eurocell focus in on four of its most popular products and systems across two stands – one dedicated to its high-performance, high aesthetic window and door systems; and another for its popular Equinox tiled conservatory roofs and Skypod roof lanterns. Stand AT13 is hosting the undoubted star of the show in the form of the new Modus S, a mechanically jointed flush sash casement window, which combines modern materials with a truly traditional appearance. This achievement is possible thanks to precision-engineered mouldings inside the frame which remove the need for the tell-tale diagonal corner welds – a characteristic giveaway of standard PVC-U windows. The joint detail adds considerable authenticity to the window and 82 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

enables delivery of a product with the true look of timber, while retaining all the performance benefits of PVC-U. Furthermore, it is up to 25% less expensive than the nearest equivalent PVC-U flush sash product. EP1604FP Eurocell FIT Previews #1Featuring a unique 75mm six-chamber profile system, the Modus range – the original game changer system, launched in 2014 – delivers optimum energy efficiency performance and can achieve a U-value as low as 0.7 W/m2K. The first PVC-U window and door system in the UK to offer a 12-year guarantee, Modus casement windows were among the first to be awarded the new A++ WER. Modus and Modus S are available in 10 solid and woodgrain effect colours, all of which are available with white internal finishes, while

more than 25 solid and woodgrain effect finishes can also be ordered. With sustainability in mind, the Modus range consists of 50% post-consumer recycled PVC-U as standard, and so has a smaller carbon footprint than products made or recycled outside of the UK. #originalgamechanger Also on the stand is Aspect: Eurocell’s innovative panoramic bi-fold door system. With ultra slim frames and over 30 unique features, many of them patented, Aspect is the first and only system of any material of its kind to gain BBA approval. Furthermore, it brings additional peace of mind – especially in the Part Q Building Regulations context – as it has also Secured by Design status (subject to fabricator accreditation). Over on Stand A70, Eurocell gives rein to its premium roofing range – one of which features a stunning new tiling system. Equinox is the company’s innovative tiled conservatory roof system. Advanced design features make Equinox simpler and faster to install. A three-man installation team can complete an Equinox tiled roof in just two days, and it will be watertight on day one, so it can be safely left overnight. And now Equinox comes with

FIT SHOW SlateSkin – a swift installation and highly realistic slate-effect GRP tile sheet. With multiple tile courses built in to each sheet, SlateSkin reduces the time spent positioning and nailing tiles, with no compromise on build quality or aesthetics, while its lightweight allows the pitch to be set anywhere from 50 – a pitch that no other current tile system can currently achieve – to 350. Guaranteed for 25 years, the SlateSkin sheet-tiling system is not only durable but up to 50% faster to fit than other conservatory tile roofing methods. Beyond, Equinox and Slateskin, the stand also showcases the Skypod roof lantern range. Offering better value for money than aluminium or competitive PVC-U alternatives, Skypod has a fixed 20-degree roof pitch and is supplied with self-cleaning, temperature controlled glass in Blue, Neutral, Bronze and Clear as standard, with a U-value of 1.0W/ m²K achievable. Skypod is available in the full colour range of Anthracite Grey, Moondust Grey, Golden Oak, Rosewood and White – with a white interior finish as standard to maximise the light and airy feel. A further 25 colour options can be made to order in three weeks. Fresh to the Skypod range is the SkypodSQ.This square skylight presents perfectly balanced sight lines and, due to its simple but ingenious four-hip design, lets in more natural light than conventional designs of equivalent surface area. SkypodSQ can be fitted quickly and accurately because there are no mitring or awkward angles to cut – just assemble and screw into place using the predrilled screw holes. Security Breach: Titon’s Fit Show

‘Area 24’ Secrets Revealed! Following recent reports of a strange glowing phenomenon at Titon’s manufacturing facilities, further details have finally come to light. Although the original whistle-blower has been uncontactable since the information was leaked in January, undercover investigations appear to reveal the truth… The mysterious ‘AREA 24’ appears to be Titon’s extensive hi-tech product development and testing laboratory – a unit which was established two years ago and has been fully operational for some time. The facility’s primary function is the testing and launching of hardware products to achieve PAS24 security levels on timber, PVCu and composite aluminium windows and doors. PAS24 is recognised throughout the industry as the minimum standard by which compliance

with Approved Document Q (Security) of the Building Regulations, England & Wales is measuring windows and doors. New sources reveal Titon has been inviting customers to visit ‘AREA 24’ to trial its hardware on their windows and doors to see if the combination of products will surpass PAS24 on specific profile designs. There are also reportedly

durability and other testing capabilities available deep within the high security area, overseen by a vastly experienced team of technical experts. If this is indeed the case, the facility – combined with a surprisingly extensive range of hardware for windows and doors – looks set to further strengthen Titon’s position within the industry. To silence the rumours surrounding ‘AREA 24’ once and for all, Titon has confirmed it will be demonstrating some of the product capabilities mentioned previously at the FIT Show in April 2016. Visitors to stand no. 326 will have the opportunity to see behind the scenes and question the Titon personnel behind the development of the latest high quality security products. Visitors will need to keep their eyes peeled, before the company once again secures its hardware portfolio behind locked doors! Award Winning Installer Takes

Mini Business Profile To Fit The team at G-15 Installer of the Year The Window Company (Contracts) are already making detailed plans for their visit to this year’s FIT Show. As well as scouring the floor plan and the show guide well in advance to identify the stands they most want to visit, they’ve come up with an innovative way of making sure that they don’t miss any of the people they really want to meet. 84 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

Founder and Chairman David Thornton will be visiting with Directors Rob Petre and Martin Thornton and they have put together a mini profile of their business to leave behind on stands which interest them. Rob said: “Sometimes the very person you want to talk to is tied up with someone else or they’re just not on the stand that day. Rather than just get our badge scanned or walk away and leave our business card, we thought we’d go one step further and leave behind this proper profile so that exhibitors can see what we’re all about and whether they’d like

to do business with us. “All of our individual email addresses are on there as well so that potential suppliers even know which of us to contact for refurbishment or new build work. We’re always focused on efficiency and we think this will be the best way to make our two days at the show as efficient and worthwhile as possible.” The Window Company (Contracts) has visited both of the previous FIT shows and identified valuable new suppliers at each of them.

FIT SHOW With the Glazerite UK Group already well established as the largest UK fabricator of VEKA products, that position is further extended with the addition of Halo Rustique and System 10 windows and doors. Offer The Most Comprehensive Yet

VEKA’s Fully Sculptured and the ‘new’ Matrix 70 bevelled frames will be offered alongside the Halo equivalents whilst the innovative Warmcore window has also been added to the Glazerite portfolio. These additions now mean that Glazerite’s product offering is one of the UK’s most comprehensive and thorough, ensuring that the company’s installation partners stay ahead of the local competition. Glazerite’s composite door range is one of the most extensive available from any trade fabricator and genuinely offers something for every installer. The existing DoorCo and Solidor ranges have been enhanced by two exciting additions. Take a look at the top end door from Palladio, which really offers something distinctive and exceptional with its Monocoque core. Also on show will be the Storm/Flood door, an aesthetically pleasing product that also offers superb performance under exceptional circumstances. The MACO 15 point lock for full perimeter locking provides a secure and completely watertight door solution.

Visitors also have the opportunity to take a more detailed look at so many of the products that Glazerite offer on the stands of their supply partners who are also exhibiting at The FIT Show. However, the only place that the Glazerite Customer Support and Marketing Hub can be seen is the Glazerite stand. Here the company has dedicated a whole section for customers to experience what the company believes is one of the most comprehensive and effective programme of its type available in the window and door industry. The Glazerite programme is typically thorough and, through partners such as Network VEKA and Assure, addresses elements

that simply are not offered in other ‘support’ packages including Technical, Human Resources and Health & Safety. The Marketing module covers Social Media, customised digital sales presenters for use on tablets and laptops and genuinely bespoke website builds for customers that offer true individual expression of their businesses. The recent acquisition of Citybeads Ltd based in Peterborough has allowed Glazerite to expand its product range whilst maintaining fast and efficient lead times. Sternfenster Chosen For Multimillion-Pound Regeneration Scheme UPVC and aluminium fabricator, Sternfenster, has been contracted to provide windows and doors to a major North London redevelopment project. The Lincoln-based company has supplied 760 Residence 9 windows and 750 Deceuninck doors to the Dollis Valley residential development, an ambitious regeneration project that aims to transform a run-down area of Barnet into what developer Countryside Properties PLC calls “London’s first 21st Century garden suburb”. Comprising 631 new private and rented houses and apartments, the project will also include parks, green spaces, and a variety of community facilities. 86 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

Having delivered £540,000 worth of windows and doors for the first phase of the project, Sternfenster has now been awarded the £400,000 contract for phase two, set to begin on-site this Spring, and run for an estimated 15 months. The five-phase project is due to be completed in 2020. “We’re delighted to have been contracted for such a sensitively designed, high-quality regeneration project”, said Sternfenster managing director, Mike Parczuk. “For us, it’s incredibly rewarding – we’re seeing our sustained investment in increasing capacity come to fruition, allowing us to take on major commercial contracts such as this one, while maintaining our lead times and continuing to improve on the

“We’re especially pleased that with this project, the client has benefitted from our state-of-theart StyleLine Deceuninck doors and Residence 9 windows, featuring attractive seamless corner welds, rather than the unsightly corner groove that’s commonly found in PVC-U frames. As a manufacturing method, StyleLine Residence 9 is also up to 32% less expensive than the traditional mechanical jointing, while still delivering the high-end aesthetic required,” said Mike. He continued: “It’s just one of the many benefits that we’re able to pass down the line to our trade and commercial customers, all the way through to the end-users,” concluded Mike. Sternfenster offers a comprehensive choice of high-end frames, from its award-nominated, exclusive timber-look range, StyleLine, to mechanically jointed Residence 9, Smart Aluminium windows and doors, including bi-folds in any colour and configuration, and Spectus vertical sliders. ON-SITE Teamwork, good communications and the application of traditional skills all came to the fore when more than 200 dated and decaying timber porches need replacing in Alexander Park in Manchester’s Moss Side. PVC-U had been the natural choice for the replacement, offering greater thermal efficiency as well as significantly lower maintenance. Profile 22 was chosen as frame system, not only for its product specification but also the well-known benefits of working with its Approved Window Contractor scheme. However, the entire project would have been a non-starter but for a little inspiration and traditional expertise, as Gary Wylde, MD of the chosen scheme member, Select Windows, explained: “At first it was thought it couldn’t be done with PVC-U because of possible problems lining up with existing roofs and gutters. But Tony Wood, one of our co-founders, with over 35 years’ industry experience, cut and re-welded the guttering to a purpose-made angle. Without his expertise, the project might never have got off the ground in the first place.” The original porches had been part of a major redevelopment of the estate in 1994 but ongoing repair and repainting costs, as well as rotting frames and insecure doors made replacement inevitable. Initially, Profile 22 was asked to provide advice to City South Manchester Housing Trust, as the two have worked closely in the past. Profile 22 got on board with CAD drawings and a specification that was put out to tender through the Approved Window Contractors network. Select Windows was chosen, via main contractor Mears Group PLC. During the contract, every element of the chain paid tribute to every other for good communi-

The product and fitting teams have been excellent. My thanks to the operatives as they have fitted 202 porches and we have received no complaints at all from the residents. “Select attended every property on time and returned immediately to any where there was a query or problem. Many residents have mentioned how good the porches look and they are pleased with the added security from the windows and doors.” Walsall-based Select Windows,

as a Profile 22 Approved Commercial Manufacturer, was able to access details of the original tender from the Profile 22’s tender portal, as it had done many times to gain work on previous occasions. In just under six months, Select installed 202 porches using Profile 22 doors and frames with 28mm double glazing. Select has been in business 35 years and recently reached a milestone of producing 1,000 units a week. ON-SITE contemporary design within York’s rich architectural heritage. Located adjacent to the Grade II* listed early-17th Century Black Swan public house, The Hiscox Building will establish a new focal point for the Hungate area of the city. The spectacular four-storey building will house up to 500 employees in a dynamic working environment with open, flexible floor space. The light airy interior effect is created by the extensive use of the VS-1 curtain walling. This combines with a cantilevered concrete frame and undulating woven brickwork façade to provide a workspace which fosters creativity and collaboration. Work on site began in 2014. UKbased GLASSOLUTIONS, part of the international Saint-Gobain Group, supplied and installed the curtain walling structure for main contractor BAM Construction as part of a £1.8 million contract.

The VS-1 system façade is articulated with both convex and concave curved insulated units, the largest of which is 2.0m wide x 4.2m high. The argon filled laminated heat strengthened units have high performance coatings to limit solar gain, achieving g-values as low as 0.34. To meet internal thermal comfort targets, glass units with centre pane u-values of 1.1 W/m2K have been used. Combined with the thermally efficient frames, this creates screens with weighted average U-values of 1.3 W/m2K. Says Make Architects’ Jason Parker, partner and the project lead architect: “The building has been designed to complement York’s rich architectural heritage whilst providing a new home for Hiscox in the heart of the city. It has been a fantastic collaboration between York, Hiscox, the designers and contractors – each contributing to a building which conveys a sense of joy from both inside and out. The incorporation of VS-1 into the design creates a light and airy space and reinforces the openness and the friendly face of Hiscox.” Steve Langan, Managing Director, Hiscox UK and Europe, said: “The brief we gave the architects was to create something that represents a progressive addition to the long history of York – something that taps into the history of the Hungate site and is sympathetic to the surrounding listed buildings, while using cutting-edge architectural, design and working practices. Float Glass Industries Supplies Glass For A Legal And General

Office Refurbishment In Surrey

Legal and General office, Lotus Park, Staines, Surrey

Financial services company Legal and General’s property in Lotus Park in Staines consists of four two-storey office buildings and provides 79,000 sq ft of prime office accommodation. The buildings date from the 1980s and were in need of refurbishment. The scale and prominence of the buildings combined with the exacting nature of the specification meant that only experienced contractors and suppliers would have the necessary credentials to undertake the work. Specialist glass manufacturer and supplier Float Glass Industries had the track record and credentials to be able to supply and install the glazing elements of the refurbishment and, after a competitive tender process, was awarded the contract. Steve Ferrie, FGI’s Commercial Sales Director, said, “We have been working with the main building envelope contractor for over

five years so could provide ample evidence of our suitability and expertise to meet all the requirements of this complex project.” The project, worth around £150,000 to Float Glass Industries, took over four months to complete. It required high performance thermal and solar glass, security toughened glass, structured units using Schuco retention pockets and ceramic painted units. FGI manufactured all the products in-house, including painting the ceramic units using its roller painting machine. Steve Ferrie commented, “We are used to supplying large contracts on time and on budget. But despite our familiarity with such work, we maintain a meticulous attention to detail to ensure we get every element right and meet or exceed every manufacturing standard.” www.floatglass.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016 89

New School Puts Senior’s PURe® Windows To The Test cation Funding Agency’s (EFA) Priority Schools Programme. The new patent-pending PURe® window range is the first in the UK to benefit from an enhanced thermal barrier manufactured from expanded polyurethane foam (PUR). Traditionally used in cladding and insulation products, the innovative use of PUR as a thermal barrier in windows gives the PURe® system the potential to achieve U-values as low as 0.71w/m2k when calculated as a commercial CEN standard window.

A new primary school in Derby has become the first completed project in the UK to feature the new thermally-efficient PURe® windows from leading fenestration designer and manufacturer Senior Architectural Systems. The innovative new aluminium window system, which is the first on the UK market to benefit from an enhanced thermal barrier manufactured from expanded polyurethane foam (PUR), has been specified for use on the new Carlyle Infant School in Derby. Working alongside main contractor Bowmer & Kirkland and Bond Bryan architects, Senior’s PURe® casement windows were installed by leading fabricator Allied Glazing. Key to the specification of Senior’s PURe® windows was the system’s high thermal performance that not only gives exceptionally low U-values but also has the potential to dramatically improve the building’s overall carbon calculations. With any new product there is always going to be some uncertainty about how easy it will be to work with and how well it will perform but we are extremely impressed with the PURe® window system, particularly as it combines ease of fabrication with a technically advanced construction and exceptional thermal performance. We liaised closely with Senior’s technical team throughout the contract, developing a much stronger working relationship in the process, and we are looking forward to working with the new PURe® system on future contracts.” Providing a modern and inspirational learning environment for some 180 pupils, the new Carlyle Infant School in Derby is one of six to be rebuilt as part of the Edu-

As well as helping to cut the operational carbon emissions by making the building easier and more cost-effective to heat, the unique construction of the PURe® system can also contribute to reducing the calculations of embodied carbon which looks at the energy used in the manufacture, transportation, assembly and deconstruction of construction materials. Not only is the PURe® system manufactured from aluminium, which offers ‘cradle to cradle’ recycling, but the PUR thermal barrier can be re-used as fillers for other products with no requirement for landfill. With a generic Green Guide rating of ‘A’ for use in commercial projects and a life expectancy in excess of 40 years, Senior’s most recent product innovation has also been designed to meet the PassivHaus standard cycle and exceed the current requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations. MACHINERY “Intastop products need precise dimensions; there is no tolerance for deviation in the measurements. We needed new machinery to speed up production but with no compromise on accuracy. This lead us to the elumatecmachine show in Milton Keynes.”

Accurate Measures For An Expanding Company Intastop Ltd has recently invested £80K in new equipment from elumatec,a leading premium supplier of profile machining. Intastop is an innovative company and lead the way in the specialist fields of anti-ligature products and door and wall protection. This pedigree, combined with the company’s commitment to new product development and leading edge innovation, ensures Intastop remains

a leading manufacturer and supplier to the healthcare, public and leisure build markets. “For over twenty years we have built up a considerable body of knowledge in supplying cost-effective protection solutions to hospitals, schools, supermarkets and airports” said Shaun Howard, Intastop Operations Director.

Elumatec’s technical sales manager Andrew Robson said ” It is always rewarding to work with companies like Intastop that research leading edge equipment and technology. We look forward to continuing to support Intastop in its exciting future.” www.elumatec.com

Haffner Murat’s latest promotion is

10 out of 10 Haffner Murat has just launched its latest incentive that is likely to prove popular with fabricators looking to invest in new machinery. The scheme, called ‘10 for 10’, is a sales incentive scheme that gives fabricators 10% discount off any of the Haffner Murat’s machinery range, including refurbished machines, when they pay £10.00 for the discount voucher.

All money received as a result of the promotion will be donated to Hope House Hospice, part of GM Fundraising, which supports children with terminal or long term illnesses. Managing Director of Haffner Murat, Dave Thomas, who is an active supporter of GM Fundraising said, “We continually try to help our customers when buying machinery and having 10% off any of our machines is a great way to do this. This is in addition to our normal incentives such as our part-exchange scheme and competitive finance options. The new ‘10 for 10’ incentive will not only allow customers to get a further 10% off 92 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

the purchase price, but it also allows a very worthwhile charity to benefit too.” The £10.00 voucher can be downloaded direct from Haffner Murat’s website www.haffnermurat. com. Once downloaded, customers pay their £10.00 fee at the point of purchase to receive 10% discount of their chosen machine. 10% may seem a generous discount but is part of a personal thank you from Dave himself. Dave says, “March 2016 is a special milestone for me as I will have been in the industry for over 30 years. This is a way of me saying thank you to both existing and potential customers as well as helping the charity. Giving something back is very important to me and the team at Haffner Murat and we are pleased to offer this incentive.” The promotion is running from 12th April, the first day of FIT 2016, and finishes on 14th May 2016, exactly a month after the last day of the show. ’10 for 10’ vouchers will also be available on the Haffner Murat stand 272 for those customers wanting to take advantage of the offer at the show.

MACHINERY Having already experienced the reliability and accuracy of Kombimatec machinery after purchasing an Electric Double Mitre Saw from them almost 10 years ago, when UPVC doors and windows manufacturer KwikFrames needed a new one it was only right the Hull-based business called on the acclaimed machinery specialists once again.

Kombimatec Update “An Easy Decision To Make,” Says KwikFrames

“It was an easy decision to make,” says KwikFrames Managing Director Paul Martin when discussing the upgrade of their DGS530 Electronic Double Mitre Saw. “The previous Kombimatec saw we had was excellent. It never caused us any issues and was ultimately very reliable.” So why the upgrade? According to Paul it was just a case of staying ahead of the curve with a refresh. “It’s been in our factory for almost 10 years. If you’d had a car for 10 years with 200,000 miles on the clock you’d be thinking about a change, wouldn’t you? “It’s critical to our business so we felt it was the right time to invest in a new Kombimatec saw and the DGS530 was the obvious choice as it fits seamlessly into our production line.” Happy with the upgrade, the new machine has proved faster and has integrated into the KwikFrames factory with ease.

Kombimatec’s DGS530 Electronic Double Mitre Saw comes complete with 2x 530mm TCT saw blades that allow two profiles to be cut simultaneously. With faster automatic positioning according to cutting length and angles required via servo motor with closed loop feedback, cutting lists are transferred by USB memory stick directly to the saw. Also coming with a colour touch screen on an overhead boom, this is easy to use and access by the operator as it is kept clear of the working area. This significantly reduces the risk of profile falling

or dropping onto screens that are housed inside lower level operating consoles. Paul adds: “We were thinking about purchasing a cheaper model from elsewhere but it just wasn’t worth it because Kombimatec’s customer service is second to none and we had already tried and tested their products so we knew how good they were.” For further information visit www. kombimatec.com, email sales@ kombimatec.com or call direct on 01582 562218

This includes 16 different woodgrains and 8 different colours and there are plans to expand this range as minimum ordering quantities come down. The CoolSkin® product dominates

the composite and panel door market in the UK and in Europe, thanks to the unique nature of the Hornschuch Cool Color foils which are exclusive to 3D Laminates. At the latter end of 2015, the decision was made to switch to VEKA for a better performing substrate which has undergone accelerated weather testing with excellent results with companies such as Endurance® Doors and Solidor big advocates of the product. Mark Lofthouse, managing director of 3D Laminates commented: ‘The new responsive website shows off our CoolSkin® range in incredible detail and highlights our strong relationship with VEKA and their impressive VEKAPLAN range. CMS Celebrates

Tenth Birthday With £1000 Donation To Kirkcaldy Social Enterprise

L-R: John Rodigan (Building Services Manager at Fife Council), Pauline Buchan (Services Manager at The Cottage Family Centre), John Deacon (Contracts Manager at CMS Window Systems) and Cllr Judy Hamilton (Executive Spokesperson for Housing and Building Services, Kirkcaldy).

CMS Window Systems has kicked off a year of supporting a wide range of charities with a £1000 donation to The Cottage Family Centre, which provides vital services to families in Fife. The donation marks the start of CMS’s year of extensive charity support marking the business’s 10-year anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, CMS has committed to supporting ten charities dedicated to improving the lives of people in ten communities in which the business operates. The firm will make ten donations of £1000 each to causes nominated by its most valued customers. Kirkcaldy’s Cottage Family Centre is the first charity to benefit from a donation by CMS after being nom96 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

inated by Fife Council. Established in 1987, the Centre gives support to families with pre-school children who are vulnerable to factors such as poverty, unemployment and health issues. As well as running playgroups and mother-and-baby sessions, the Cottage Family Centre provides other invaluable services for the Kirkcaldy and wider community such as adult education classes, parenting skills workshops, and children’s counselling services. Pauline Buchan, the Centre’s Services Manager, welcomed CMS’s contribution to the centre: “We’d like to express our gratitude to CMS for their very generous donation to the Cottage Family Centre. Local families who use the centre rely on the assistance we make

available to them – CMS’s contribution will help us develop initiatives which complement, support and extend our main services to vulnerable families.” Founded in 2006 and with manufacturing and recycling facilities located in North Lanarkshire and Fife, CMS has a sound reputation as a business with a strong social conscience. Its commitment to corporate social responsibility ranges from its extensive sustainability policies to its focus on creating local employment opportunities and its support of community causes. In addition to its longstanding relationships with a number of charities CMS actively encourages its employees to help local charities through volunteering and fundraising. In November last year, CMS employees raised over £6500 to fund the Lanarkshire Beatson radiotherapy treatment centre by generously giving up part of their wages every week. Andy Kerr, CMS’s Managing Director, said: “The last decade has seen a great deal of positive change for CMS. Since 2006, we’ve grown to be a leading window manufacturing business with a workforce of over 245 and a £35m annual turnover, and we’re keen to be responsible and give back to our community where we can. Our market-leading sustainability and recycling policies, as well as our apprenticeship scheme to promote local employment, all demonstrate our commitment to helping our communities thrive, and we feel that our ‘ten charities for ten years’ programme for 2016 will be a great way to contribute. We hope that the Cottage Family Centre is able to use our donation to continue their great work helping the families of Fife.” For further information on CMS Window Systems visit www. cmswindows.com

CMS Window Systems’ Staff Get Behind Beatson

Cancer Charity’s Lanarkshire

Beatson Business Community Appeal Staff at CMS Window Systems have raised more than £6500 for the new Lanarkshire Beatson by generously giving up part of their wages every week during November and donating the total to Beatson Cancer Charity. The fundraising effort for Beatson Cancer Charity is part of a £500,000 appeal to help fund a wide range of patient and family support services, quiet areas and outdoor spaces at the new £22 million Lanarkshire Beatson radiotherapy treatment centre at Monklands General Hospital in Airdrie, which opened in November. This will deliver treatments to 1,200 people from across the Lanarkshire region every year, the area in which most CMS employees and their families live. The initiative was wholeheartedly backed by the CMS workforce spanning all the company’s departments, including production staff on the fabrication lines and the installation teams. Their valuable individual contributions were matched pound for pound by the company too, as it further supported the efforts of its staff. Driving the fundraising campaign was CMS apprentice Rachel Clark, whose grandfather has been one of the first patients to benefit from the state of the art radiotherapy treatment centre. Rachel says, “The Lanarkshire Beatson provides superb treatment and care as my grandfather and my family have seen first-hand, so it has been fantastic to give something back and get involved in raising money for the facility. The response from my colleagues has been tremendous, and I’m sure everyone wishes Beatson Cancer Charity the very best of luck in their future fundraising efforts.” 98 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2016

CMS Business Systems Director, Martin McCrimmon was also keen for the company to get behind the fundraising initiative as part of their commitment to vital charitable causes which benefit the local community. He says, “We never lose sight of our position as an integral part of our local community – many of our staff live locally and it’s great to be able to play a part in helping to fund first rate local facilities like the Lanarkshire Beatson. The response from our team has been extremely generous so I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in the fundraising effort.” Charlene Elliott, Head of Development at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to CMS Window Systems’ employees for the huge support they have demonstrated by so generously donating part of their wages to our fundraising appeal. This is a truly inspiring way to raise money for the world class radiotherapy treatment centre. “The money raised from the appeal will go towards funding a whole range of patient and family support services like massage and Reiki which help people cope with pain, insomnia and anxiety. It will also help to create a contemporary, non-clinical environment with relaxing indoor and outdoor spaces and quieter areas which allow patients to share worries or discuss treatment plans with staff. We hope this fantastic fundraising initiative will inspire so many more Lanarkshire businesses to dig deep and support Beatson Cancer Charity.” Employing more than 245 people at its HQ and manufacturing facility at Castlecary near Cumbernauld, as well as an operation in Fife, CMS Window Systems is one of Scotland’s fastest growing manufacturers. The company manufactures and installs windows, doors and curtain walling for the widest range of housing and public and commercial buildings across Scotland and the north of England, with external wall insulation (EWI) and cladding now also installed. Beatson Cancer Charity desperately needs to keep raising funds to provide the best possible support to cancer patients and families attending the Lanarkshire Beatson.
