TRADE NEWS “It’s not just the capacity to manufacture our own laminates that LW gives us but the scale of the sheets that we can handle – it’s glass processing on a very large scale”, said Mitchell. He continued: “This includes balustrading, floors and canopies, in addition to over-sized units – areas, which we see as delivering significant growth going forward.”

which we have been considering for a number of years – but also additional manufacturing capacity.
Agreed at the end of March, the purchase sees Cornwall Glass acquire the business and all assets, with immediate effect.
“This strengthens our offer across the Group but also gives us some great specialisms and reach into new markets.”
The sale gives Cornwall Glass new geographical reach along the M4 corridor into London, plus a cutting-edge multi-laminate capability, including autoclave, sterile climatic lamination facility and resin pour systems.
LW Architectural Glass was founded by Lee Warren Fabrication and Design, as its specialist glass business, in 2014. With a turnover in excess of £4m, it works across commercial and architectural sectors and has supplied a host high profile commercial projects including Wembley and Heathrow Airport.
Cornwall Glass Director, Mark Mitchell, said the agreement represented a major opportunity for LW and Cornwall Glass. “The investment that has gone into LW Glass is substantial and it’s delivered some highly impressive commercial projects throughout London”, he said. “It’s a very important strategic acquisition for us, giving Cornwall Glass a geographical presence in London – something 4 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
In addition to its state-ofthe-art lamination facility, the purchase of the 50,000 sq ft manufacturing centre, also gives Cornwall Glass two new heat soak ovens, a new toughening plant – the fourth within the group – alongside a spray booth, straight-line edgers and new CNC machinery.
With a combined turnover of £19m post acquisition of LW, Cornwall Glass has seen sustained growth through a combined strategy of expansion and acquisition covering 15 locations throughout the South West and along the M4 corridor. In addition to LW Architectural Glass, recent acquisitions have included Westcountry Glass. With more than £5m invested going into its Langage purpose built IGU production and processing facility in 2016, its turnover has grown from £1.5 to £4m since 2009. LW Architectural Glass will start trading under its new name of Cornwall Architectural Glass – London, with effect from April 18th. Mitchell concluded: “We now have a track record in acquisitions. It’s always a learning curve and you always pick up more experience every time you go through a major purchase. “What we see in Cornwall Architectural Glass – London are immediate opportunities for it and for Cornwall Glass as a group. This includes significant opportunities in commercial and light commercial sectors, particularly in the supply of laminate and multi-laminate products.” London@cornwallglass.co.uk

Announces MBO
TRADE NEWS in the composite door market but at a time when service in the sector has in general, dropped off.” Product development has also formed a key part of Sliders UK’s growth strategy. This includes the launch of the Ultimate Evolution aluminium bi-fold door in late summer last year. Sitting alongside its established aluminium bi-fold door offer from ALUK, it features a highly innovative fully adjustable jamb option. This makes it far simpler to align the door, even where apertures are out of square - cutting installation times to as little as 45 minutes.
Sliders UK has announced the formation of a new senior management team as part of an ambitious strategy for significant new growth. Created through a management buy-out, the new structure sees Alex Murphy, previously Operations Director, step up to a new role as Chief Executive Officer. Ian Longbottom and Steve Mines remain in their respective roles, as Chairman and Sales Director and joined alongside Murphy in Sliders UK’s new senior team by Finance Director, Jonathan Foxcroft. Richard Harris and Russell Pryor also join the business as retained consultants. Ian Longbottom, Chairman, Sliders UK, said: “We have ambitions for significant long term growth and are already 18-months along the road towards it. This includes not only the creation of our new management structure as announced today but also the major investment which has already been delivered in our manufacturing capability. “With increased capacity, even better quality and service and
with some very exciting product developments on the horizon, we believe that the market offers considerable opportunity for sustained growth– our own but most importantly, that of our customers.” The restructure, completed in April, sees Mike Spain, who co-founder Sliders UK, leave the business. Sliders UK reported that year-onyear sales were up 16% on the same time last year at the end of 2016. It said this had been underpinned by new products, including the Ultimate Evolution and Sliders UK’s new Duraflex bi-folding doors, plus growth in composite door sales. Sales of composite doors were also boosted by the specialist manufacturer’s investment in its new line. This means that Sliders UK can offer composite doors in 5-days or less. “The restructure of our composite door line early has given us faster turnaround and an increasingly competitive offer at a time when reliability”, says Mines. “This has come at a time of not only growth
PAS24and Part Q compliant, it also launched the new Duraflex bi-folding door at the end of the year. This is fully integrated with the systems company’s Diamond suite, featuring beveled and chamfered options it achieves a DER ‘A’ rating and u-values as low as 1.1Wm2/K. It’s launch and that of the Ultimate Evolution, sitting alongside its established Eurocell Ultimate Aspect PVC-U door range and the launch of the PremiLine PRO patio door from Kömmerling. . Another Part Q ready door, it sits alongside Sliders UK’s established offer from Duraflex, giving the door specialist one of, if not the, industry’s largest bi-fold and patio door offers. Longbottom continued: “The product innovation that we have delivered so far delivers incredible opportunity to our customers. He concluded: “We believe that the range, the service levels and the quality that we’re able to offer from a single specialist supplier, delivers a real advantage and that that and the team and strategy which we now have in place, represent a strong foundation for our future growth and that of our customers.” www.sliders-uk.com WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017 5

Morley Opens State Of The Art Showroom
Residence Collection
Tomred Window Systems is dedicated to making quality windows and doors for its installer customers with Residence Collection. The Blackburn based Tomred team was having great success with Residence 9 (R9) in its installation business, McDermott Windows, and saw an opportunity to take control of the quality of its products by fabricating R9 and Residence 7 (R7). Tomred was set up specifically to fabricate Residence Collection systems, and has invested in Residence2 (R2) this year to complete the suite. Residence Collection is the innovative systems company behind R7, which is flush inside and out; R9, the original top timber-alternative; and R2, an aluminium-alternative. Tomred Director Stephen McDermott says: “We loved R9 from the start, and McDermott has been installing it for a long time. When Residence Collection and its new systems launched last year it was really exciting. They create an unmissable opportunity for both fabricators and installers, which is why we decided to take the plunge into fabrication.” www.residencecollection.co.uk 6 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
Morley Glass & Glazing has welcomed the first visitors to its newly-opened showroom, offering them the unique opportunity to get hands-on with the company’s integral blind products, and find out more about the benefits they offer. The creation of the state-of-the-art showroom is part of the company’s £1.5 million move to 49,000sq ft premises in Leeds last July, to accommodate projected growth at the business. When visiting, guests will be able to learn more about all five of Morley’s integral blind systems, including the battery-operated W Swipe System and the manually operated C System. The showroom also benefits from a section demonstrating the effects of different glass options, thanks to a range of products kindly supplied by the UK’s largest processor, distributor, installer and repairer of glass and glass systems, Glassolutions.
Visitors to the new showroom will have the chance to see a number of Glassolutions’ innovative glazing products first-hand, including SGG PLANITHERM Total+, SGG PLANITHERM One and SGG PLANITHERM 4S, and not only see but actually feel the advantages of using glass that offers solar and/or thermal control properties. Ian Short, managing director at Morley Glass, said: “We’ve always wanted to provide a space where our customers could have the chance to see first-hand all the innovative technology that goes into our product range. “One of the motivations behind our move to a large site in 2016, as well as the opportunity to boost production capacity, was so we could have the space to make this showroom a reality. I’m very pleased with how everything has come together and look forward to welcoming many visitors in the future!” www.morleyglass.co.uk.
TRADE NEWS certification schemes for recyclates. With recycling increasing year-on-year, work is underway to include schemes like EuCertPlast as standard criteria for secondary raw materials. This would stimulate demand and help to prevent the loss of these valuable materials from a circular economy. “Having recycled nearly 600,000 tonnes of PVC last year, we have demonstrated through the VinylPlus Voluntary Commitment that we can divert from landfill significant volumes of PVC waste, thereby contributing to resource efficiency,” continued Brigitte.

Of PVC recycled In 2016
The recycling of PVC has reached a new high with 568,696 tonnes recycled in 2016 through the framework of VinylPlus, the European PVC industry sustainable development programme. The latest results were announced at PVC 2017 by Brigitte Dero, VinylPlus General Manager, who opened the conference in Brighton on April 25th.

The triennial event is the world’s largest PVC forum providing information, education, debate and discussion on key topics for the industry.
A cumulative total of more than 3.5 million tonnes of PVC has been recycled since 2000 thanks to the efforts of VinylPlus. The largest volumes are from window profiles, followed by cables and flexible applications, pipes and fittings. The target is to recycle 800,000 tonnes per year by 2020.
Speaking on the first day, Brigitte highlighted how the achievements of the VinylPlus Voluntary Commitment to sustainable development over the past two decades had helped to turn PVC from ‘the black sheep in the plastic family to a pioneer’ and a material of
She stated: “VinylPlus is now recognised by external stakeholders and is considered by many as a frontrunner for the circular economy. We reached this position by achieving significant and concrete results and have consistently demonstrated our commitment through action.”
VinylPlus places ‘paramount importance’ on the safety and quality of recycled PVC, which is supported by traceability and
Other recent achievements include the development of an Additives Sustainability Framework – a new science-based system for assessing the sustainable use of additives in PVC products. The first ASF is almost complete for window profiles. Brigitte explained how VinylPlus provides solutions to a ‘number of issues’ highlighted in the EU discussion on Plastics Strategy and the vision that ‘all plastics should be designed, manufactured and used in a sustainable manner, while increasing their durability’. Concluding, Brigitte Dero said: “VinylPlus has made successful progress across all challenges identified in the Voluntary Commitment increasing the sustainability performance of PVC. This is thanks to the efforts of many companies delivering quality products (virgin and recyclates) safely. “Our journey continues to address all concerns and engage the PVC industry towards sustainability as a whole through dialogue and practical partnerships. Billion:
The Real Cost Of Winning Work Research conducted by MarketingWorks and Reading University uncovered the real cost of the bidding process in the construction industry as almost £3 billion. myConsole, recently announced as the procurement partner for Digital Construction Week, will be holding a webinar to show the industry how they can use digitalisation to dramatically reduce these costs. The research discovered that the bid cost works out to 0.57% of the project value (Appendix A). When you add together the amount spent on winning and losing bids in the £110 billion construction industry, the total hits almost £3 billion. “The bidding process often escapes serious scrutiny and analysis. Our research highlights that this needs to change. The potential for efficiencies and savings in time and money are massive,” said Philip Collard, Chief Executive of myConsole. Most tellingly, there are a range of work winning behaviours that mark out winning bidders (Appendix B). In their webinar, myConsole will highlight the areas ripe for change in the bid process. Key takeaways from the session will include insights into: Relationship building Bid selectivity Process management The traditional approach to winning work is for teams to spread their resources over a large

number of bids. The research shows the average number of bidders per tender is five, which aligns with the typical length of a tender list – between four and six. Philip Collard explained how this impacts on the cost of bidding. “We discovered the true cost for a winning bid is the cost of four losing bids, plus the cost of the winning bid. This brings the cost of the bid process up to a staggering 2% to 3% of total revenue.” “We have valuable insights into the behaviour and processes that win work, and can help procurement teams create massive efficiencies,” said Philip. Profile 22 Announces Strong Start To The Year
Profile 22 has announced a strong start to 2017. Paul Lindsay, Sales Director for Profile 22, commented: “We know what a big decision it is to move profile partner and the number of new sign ups we’ve had so far this year is evidence of just how much Profile 22 has to offer.” When it comes to a market-leading offering, Profile 22 claims it really delivers. Its award-winning Optima system is billed as the best
of everything. It offers two main systems in chamfered and sculptured variants, complemented with a heritage style flush casement system and a unique flush tilt and turn system designed to compete with aluminium. The systems offer impressive technical innovations such as more thermal chambers, deep drainage channels, a central eurogroove position, thickened walls around screw locations and a secure bead system. There are a wealth of glazing options, a wide
range of ancillaries and an impressive colour selection too. While the list of innovations is impressive, Optima retains the familiar Profile 22 appearance, something that offers a clear visual differentiation. “The response from the market has been excellent,” said Paul. “Fabricators recognise just what a strong product Optima is and this is reflected in the number of new sign ups this year.” Profile 22 says it can also offer the reassurance of a genuinely seamless transfer from one system to another. In fact, the process is so detailed, finely tuned and proactive that it is possible to finish with one system on the Friday and begin with Optima on the Monday. “Many fabricators fear changing profile partners because of the potential disruption to their business, but with Profile 22 we can guarantee there will be minimal or no disruption,” said Paul. We know this to be the case because when we launched Optima last year, we successfully undertook a complete changeover of nearly 100 Profile 22 fabricators to Optima in nine months. www.profile22.co.uk

Patiomaster’s Appeal Continues To Grow PatioMaster’s appeal is continuing to grow amongst fabricators, installers and homeowners and for Carmen Velilla, PatioMaster’s Brand Manager, there are several good reasons for this. “We’re the market leaders because by specialising in manufacturing patio doors we’re recognised as the experts. Then there’s our business model. We offer the reassurance and power of a nationwide brand but with our network of local fabricators and installers, both businesses and homeowners can support their local economy. The Queen’s Awards winners were publicly announced by Her Majesty The Queen on Friday 21st April 2017 when UK manufacturer and supplier of insulated glass components – Thermoseal Group – were proclaimed winner of The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise: International Trade 2017. The Queen’s Awards are the UK’s most prestigious business awards to celebrate and encourage business excellence in the UK. Gwain Paterson, Managing Director at Thermoseal Group, tells us: “I’m honoured to accept such a great compliment to the business and recognition for all of the efforts of my colleagues over the past few years. “It is of course, with thanks to our customers for their continued support that we have achieved such an esteemed accolade. It has been an excellent year for us with awards coming in thick and fast. ucts to manufacturing warm edge spacer bars and injection moulding all of our own fittings, I rarely get time to sit back and look at what a great business we are building and how impressive it is. We have been focussed on setting up production sites and developing our own bespoke equipment and processes, as well as our
innovation centre and laboratory facilities, and then upscaling everything to meet the growing demand. In addition, we have done all this whilst developing the infrastructure of the business, up-skilling our current staff and taking on a whole production team. We have seen steady growth over the past few years, but particularly in the past year we have really started to make an impact on export markets, some of which where our products are already the leading warm edge option. “We now manufacture over 50% of the products we supply as opposed to less than 5% in 2008. In terms of export, we ship to over 22 different countries in Europe, USA, South America, Asia, Australia and Oceania. Growth in export has been significant over the past year and is set to continue in the future. Although I’m not generally the kind of person to blow my own trumpet, our awards successes so far prove that our business is impressive in any industry and my colleagues deserve the recognition for their continued efforts and dedication to building Thermoseal Group. I’d like to say a personal thank you to everyone involved in our successes to date.” For further information about its comprehensive range of IG components and machinery, call 0845 331 3950 (Intl: 0044 121 331 3950) or email sales@thermosealgroup.com. What’s New At Aluprof
Key to success for any business today is the ability to be flexible and meet customers changing requirements, this is particularly relevant in the rapidly moving UK construction industry. Over the last few years Aluprof have grown significantly in UK by meeting this need whilst completing all the necessary standards and regulations.
Aluprof’s extensive stock of complete systems are based in Poland, where various powder coating and anodising lines quickly coat to Qualicoat or Qualinod standards. Once finished, profiles are thermally broken and insulated with the latest of materials including aerogel, one of the most insulative materials known for use in thermal fenestration design. With Aluprof’s advanced logistics, despatch, direct to the UK fabricator, takes an average of just 24 hours, door to door. Furthermore, add to this an option of

an in-house fabrication service, and it is understandable why many UK fabrication and installation companies are quoting Aluprof systems. One of the latest developments at Aluprof is the groups recent acquisition of a hardware company; making Aluprof just one of only a handful of systems suppliers worldwide, who can now develop enhanced hardware for
Wojciech Brozyna, Managing Director of Aluprof UK, comments, “It is the needs of today’s project designers that has driven Aluprof to meet the demand for bespoke system solutions. Increasingly we are being specified on numerous projects, often with some of the most well known brands across the globe. In 2016 alone, we designed and cut over one thousand new profiles to meet our customer’s needs.” With a two fold increase in visitors over the last couple of years to Aluprof’s head office and production facility in the picturesque town of Bielsko-Biała in Poland, the company has recently completed a new showroom which ensures visitors can experience the wide range of systems the company now offers. aluprof.co.uk
Quickslide Targets Hardware In Supplier
Consolidation Quickslide has launched a programme of consolidating its list of hardware suppliers to pass on the cost benefits of closer working relationships in response to pre-Brexit price pressure.
The move is also part of the fabricator’s ongoing policy of streamlining the buying of materials and components for improved service and prices through stronger long-term working relationships as Operations Director Ben Weber explained: “We have already developed supply deals on other materials such as spacer bars and have been able to pass on the benefits to our customers. Now, with the weaker pound impacting on prices everywhere, we aim to offset some of the increases by consolidating our supplier list to share the mutual benefits of better prices for us and our customers and greater volumes for those suppliers.
“In some cases, this has allowed us to bring in new suppliers and many new and better products, and even enabled us to consider product ranges that would otherwise have been too expensive. These not only give installers our better quality offering but also make fabrication easier and so benefit everyone.” Several preferred companies have been invited to quote for increased amounts of business and negotiations are ongoing. Among those suppliers supporting the move, ERA Home Security’s Marc Robinson said: “Such relationships benefit everyone down the line. We are able to share the economies of scale by giving keener prices on a much bigger account, Quickslide passes on the benefits to installers, so they in turn have a better offering for their customers.” www.quickslide.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017 15

Trade fabricator Flair Windows invested in its first SMR-4 Four Head Welder from Haffner Murat last November. The company has been so impressed with what the machine has brought to its fabrication set up it has just invested in a second! Ryan Lugg, Director at Flair Windows, commented: “Our experience with the SMR-4 welder is that it does everything we were told it could do. It’s very easy to use – even our apprentices have picked it up with no problem. More importantly, it has helped us improve the quality of our finished product and the speed of
As Ryan’s comment suggests, the SMR-4 Four Head Welder is a machine that revolutionises the welding process by dramatically speeding up fabrication and improving quality. The machine welds corners, transoms and cruciforms on all heads. The heads automatically position for corner and transom support fence positioning and it also has self centering transom alignment. It is easy to operate and an essential purchase for any fabricator looking to move up a level. Ryan says Flair decided to purchase the company’s first SMR-4 welder because the team was so impressed with what Haffner Murat had to offer. He said: “We researched the market thoroughly before deciding to invest in the SMR-4. We hadn’t worked with Haffner Murat before but the advice we received from Dave Thomas and Andy Webb was superb and was instrumental in us choosing their machinery.”

Gary remains in the business as Operations Director and will oversee the production and manufacturing of the company’s products. UK Window Systems manufacturers two of the industry’s leading profile systems Rehau and the Residence collection, along with a range of composite doors and the Ultraframe conservatory roofing system. The business has been totally understated for many years, an undiscovered gem and has a vast amount of potential. “Year-on-year – since it’s setup, the company has grown steadily with little marketing and sales effort, an incredible achievement considering the industry’s austerity over previous years. With a new management structure in place, we are now quite excited with the prospect of developing the business, extending
our market offering further by introducing new products and by servicing trade customers nationally.” Michael adds. Nick Holloway also commented: “I already had a close relationship with Michael from my previous role as Sales Director at Hallmark, so when he approached me to join the company it was too good of an opportunity to pass-by. “The company has already undergone a complete transformation since I arrived in November 2016. It has been restructured to introduction new products, new resources to support the operational functions and seen a redesign of the manufacturing and trade-counter layout to offer more efficient supply for trade customers.”. www.ukwindowsltd.co.uk

Ford Windows Racing Ahead After 40 Years
The management team has just overseen an investment programme of nearly £1 million that includes the acquisition of two top-of-the-range Stuga ZX4 sawing and machining centres that can produce an extra 800 to 1000 windows per week with only two operators each. These produce Eurocell Eurologik 70mm windows in response to demand from house builders for improved U-values, which the six-chambered design delivers with ease as it is one of the first windows to achieve the UK’s highest possible energy rating: A++.
Ford Windows’s Managing Director Philip Shackley.
Sheffield-based fabricator and installer Ford Windows is celebrating a new milestone in its continuing growth and development – its 40th year in the industry. And, despite its maturity, the company is continuing to grow. “Our business has seen double-digit growth over the past four years and we’re currently on target to maintain this through 2017,” says managing director Philip Shackley. The company now fabricates 2,000 windows a week with 180 staff in Sheffield and is now the premier new build fabricator in the North of England, the company claims and produces another 400 a week at its East Kilbride satellite operation, which serves the Scottish market. And that commitment to service is reflected in a 60-strong customer base that includes some of the UK’s top house builders among its clients – Barratt Development, Persimmon, and Taylor Wimpey to name just three. “We believe in adding value and reacting quickly to what the customer wants,” Philip says. “If there is a problem then we aim to get it sorted in 24 hours.” 22 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
These machines can also be configured to manufacture other Eurocell windows as housebuilders turn to windows for differentiation in a highly competitive market, where models such as Modus will come to the fore. Modus is specifically designed to meet the growing demand for premium PVC-U windows from discerning homebuyers who want distinctive properties that present a traditional appearance while meeting modern performance standards. Philip Shackley believes that Ford Windows’ strong relationship with Eurocell has been a key factor in the company’s success. “We chose Eurocell because of its excellent reputation for fabricator support and innovation. It’s thanks to its excellent product and our own commitment to best-in-class customer service that we have been able to grow to this size and still expand,” he says. Trading exclusively in the new build market, Ford Windows offers a comprehensive portfolio of products, including: casement, tilt & turn and vertical slider windows; Victorian, Edwardian, or leanto conservatories; and French windows, patio and bi-folding doors. The enhanced security offered by its doors and windows is accredited by Secured by Design, the crime prevention initiative developed in the UK by ACPO CPI (Association Chief Police Officers, Crime Prevention Initiatives), as well as the recently introduced security requirement of the Building Regulations, Approved Document Q. www.fordwindows.co.uk

UK Manufacturing Predicted To Rise With The Northern

HS2 is set to provide a big boost for the aluminium sector as specifiers on projects around the rail-line look to aluminium as the material of choice, presenting opportunities for manufacturers of these types of products. Manufacturers are also set to benefit from an increase in new housing, particularly in the PRS sector, as young professionals flock to the major cities. Manchester has a flourishing PRS sector. An increase in career prospects and a rise in population has seen PRS in the city grow by 85% over the last decade. The city now has 60% more 25-29-year-olds than the UK average and needs one new home every single hour. Leon Friend, Director at Hueck UK, says the company has seen an increase in demand for its aluminium systems for projects in cities such as Manchester and Birmingham. He comments: “We have seen increased demand for our solutions for multi-storey residential projects in the cities; as well as commercial projects. As more young people flock to the cities, the need for single occupancy homes is growing bigger. New-build houses to buy are out and build-to-rent apartments are in.

A series of proposed infrastructure projects surrounding the Northern Powerhouse initiative could open fresh opportunities for manufacturers of building products in the UK. Supporters of HS2 say the project will create better connections between the big cities of the North and Midlands and make sure our economy shares growth between the North and South. A report by KPMG says the new rail project could boost the UK economy by £15bn a year and will create 22,000 construction jobs in the next five years.
“And this will only increase as stronger transport links are forged and more people see the North as a more attractive place to work and live.” Hueck is one of Europe’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of aluminium window, door and façade solutions, specialising in both standard systems as well as bespoke applications. UK Construction Could Lose 8% Of Its
Workforce
Post-Brexit A new report from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has revealed that should the UK lose access to the EU single market, the UK construction industry could lose almost 200,000 EU workers post-Brexit.
The report warns that failure to secure access to the single market could place the UK’s predicted £500 billion infrastructure pipeline under threat. Duncan Wietscher, Director of Newview Windows & Conservatories, comments: “It is in our best interests to make a success of Brexit and secure the best trade deals we can but a loss of 26 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
access to the single market has the potential to impact in the short term, making it harder for our cities to compete on a global stage and negatively impacting the economy. “We desperately need to secure access to the single market or put alternative plans in place to safeguard the future of construction and our country.” Much of the industry is dependent on EU workers, with 30% of construction professionals surveyed by RICS stating that hiring non-UK workers was important to the success of their businesses. But overseas construction
He comments: “Ballet dancers are regarded critical by the government but they won’t improve our infrastructure or solve the housing crisis. A simple first step would be to ensure that construction professions feature on the ‘UK Shortage Occupations List’. You can forge a good career in construction and we need to ensure the next generation is aware of this and prepare our own young people to enter a profession with a proven career path.” Chancellor Philip Hammond briefly addressed the construction skills shortage in the March Budget, with the confirmation of the launch of new T-Level qualifications. More than £500m a year is to be spent on new-style technical courses that offer an alternative route than A-levels into many careers, with construction prominent among them. “While it is good to see, the skills shortage recognised as a priority issue, the new technical education reforms will be a drop in the ocean compared to the numbers we need to meet the demands created by our infrastructure programme. The industry needs to act now. We have to be relentless in securing a stable pipeline of nationally significant projects that will fuel economic growth,” concludes Duncan. China has spent decades building its industrial capacity but is now turning its attention to pollution as the priority policy. According to CDW Systems, the recently introduced Air Pollution Control regulation has been imposed to eliminate coal usage and reduce the emissions of almost every other pollutant across 28 cities. As part of this, the government has imposed targets to cut industrial metals production including aluminium.
Will China’s New Environmental Policies Create Upheaval To The
Aluminium Market?
Although aluminium is considered a ‘green’ building material, many older and smaller production facilities in the cities source their power from coal, the main target of China’s anti-pollution initiative. As a result, China is forcing aluminium smelters to cut outputs by 30 per cent over the winter heating season (November – March), with estimates that the cuts will mean the loss of 2.71 million tonnes of aluminium. China is the world’s largest producer of aluminium and it is anticipated the new environmental regulations will impact supply-demand dynamics, sending shockwaves through the global supply chain. The news has already seen a hike in global aluminium prices. On the London Metal Exchange, aluminium hit a near two-year high of $1,957 per tonne. Mike Davis, Managing Director of aluminium specialist CDW Systems, comments: “The aluminium market’s main problem for many years has been over-supply, primarily in China so a cut in output will help to reduce the vast inventory overhang and hopefully work towards a long-term reduction in output from China.
“There is no denying the new regulations will have an impact on the global supply chain, driving up supplier prices and putting pressure on manufacturers to do the same. But the years of excess produc-
tion should provide a cushion against drastic disruption.” For more information call 01452 414853 or visit www.cdwsystems.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017 27

Having looked after trade and consumer shows in a variety of market segments and sizes, and with an OND and HND in hotel management, everything adds up to have Liz bring her all-round global perspective to the judging panel.

Final FIT Show IOTY
Accolade Goes To
Üni_Slide That’s all folks! Monthly entries for the FIT Show’s popular Installation of the Year competition have now closed. Highlighting some of the best commercial and domestic door, window, orangery and conservatory installation projects in the business, the final winner of the competition, taking home the title for April, is Üni_Slide Panoramic Sliding Doors.
Winning the IOTY accolade for its White Oaks contemporary family home installation in Plymouth, Üni_Slide partnered with Barc Architects who designed the crisp, light filled building featuring Üni_Slide’s sophisticated minimal sliding door with 20mm sight lines. “So many glazing products are
just functional – they do the job well enough, but rarely excel at what they do,” commented Tony Drake of fabricator Fenster Ltd, the man responsible for bringing Üni_Slide to the market. “With Üni_Slide, we want to bring great design back into focus. And just like with the White Oaks project, from the outside, it’s blissfully simple – incredibly slim sightlines, elegant, minimalistic design. But behind that, we’ve put a huge amount of effort into making the best looking, best performing product in its class.” A professional couple with a passion for architecture and interior design, the owners of the White Oaks property wanted a simple and bold contemporary family
home that would encourage outdoor living and maximise views of their spacious garden. CAB’s Adrian Toon, the competition’s judge, said of Üni_Slide’s entry: “It’s one of the best composed shots I’ve seen for a long time. The ’S’ shape of the main part of the building is central within the image, plus it’s well balanced and perfectly exposed. Timing is often everything. This shot was taken on a great day at the right time for the sun to be in the right place.” Earning themselves bragging rights for the month, Üni_Slide Panoramic Sliding Doors have won themselves a FIT Show goodie bag and a pair of tickets to the show’s popular gala dinner. Shortlisted as one of the monthly winners in with a chance at being crowned overall Installation of the Year winner, Üni_Slide will find out if they’ve won when the winner is announced at the FIT Show gala dinner on May 24th. This means entries for the competition are now closed but keep checking back to find out who will walk away victorious. WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017 33

Proudly sponsored by Epwin Group, the first ever GM Fundraising all-female event will see the team canoe 100 miles of the River Wye, abseiling the rock face at Symonds Yat, before cycling 120 miles to Oswestry to meet some of the children and families from Hope House Children’s Hospice – the very people they are fundraising for. In total, they will cover 220 miles of roads and rivers with some tough challenges along the way.

Supporting the team on their journey that takes place August 20th are GM Fundraising cycling challenge veterans, Gary Morton and Alan Sadler, as well as Canoe expert Mark Bache from Epwin Group.
Clare O’Hara, Divisional Managing Director of Epwin, and GMF P2P team member, is looking forward to it. “I have followed the previous challenges run by GM Fundraising with interest, and have wanted to do an all-female event for quite some time,” she explained.

30 minutes Have you heard about the product currently taking the lantern industry by storm?
Since production of their ground breaking new lantern roof system commenced in 2016, North East based Made For Trade have been swamped with glowing reviews and positive feedback from their customers. With the in-house design being described as ‘unbelievably quick and easy to assemble’, ‘an outstanding product’ and ‘beautifully engineered’, this isn’t something you can afford to miss out on, so now’s the time to come and meet the MFT team and their revolutionary new Korniche roof on stand L60 at the FIT show this 48 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
May.
Following on from the huge success of last year’s FIT Show where the Korniche was first unveiled, MFT have really pulled out all the stops for 2017. Bradley Gaunt, MFT’s Managing Director explained: “We are incredibly excited about this year’s show and the whole team have been working hard preparing. We’ve designed a 7m x 4m stand with strong visuals and interactive displays to showcase why our system offers the definitive lantern solution for installers and end users alike.” Sam Thomson, Factory Manager, added: “I’ll be giving regular
build demonstrations to show the incredible simplicity and speed of fit. We’ve also built up some sections of the system to give potential clients an opportunity to see and feel the quality of the parts and gain a full understanding of what we’re offering.” Topping it all off will be a large overhead Korniche lantern roof showing off the sleek aesthetics to full effect. The Definitive Lantern Solution Putting the needs of installers as much of a priority as those of the end user, Made For Trade have successfully blended contemporary, yet classic design with cutting edge engineering to create an astonishingly beautiful roof lantern, strongest and most thermally efficient in its class all whist being quick and simple to install.
FIT SHOW PREVIEW
FASTER Innovative design, an easy to follow guide and single tool construction ensure that the roof takes minimal time to build. Precision manufacturing means Korniche fits together perfectly straight from the factory and comes pre-fitted with all its seals meaning no messing about with additional cutting, drilling or additional sealant on site. Check out the company’s time lapse video showing a 3m x 1.5m lantern being fitted in under half an hour, which is available to view on their new website at: www. korniche.co.uk . STRONGER Every component used in the Korniche system has been designed, developed and refined in-house using industry leading 3D design and analysis software. The result is the strongest and stiffest roof lantern assembly on
the market, capable of supporting loads of up to 3.5kN/m2. WARMER Thermal efficiency has been guaranteed by total isolation of the external aluminium profiles from the internal ones. When combined with high performance glazing, its ability to reduce heat transfer is in a class of its own. SLIMMER The slim elegant Korniche fits perfectly in any home by retaining traditional features in a contemporary setting. The slimmest of sections are married almost seamlessly through carefully sculpted bosses and entirely hidden fixings to ensure that the sight-lines flow unbroken throughout the roof. MFT’s Ian Bousfield commented: “Trade and consumer literature on the Korniche will be available
at the FIT Show and there will be at least seven staff members on hand to answer any of your questions, from installation queries to marketing assistance information. Make sure you come along and say hello.” Get your free pass now Visit Made For Trade and the Korniche lantern at the FIT Show on stand L60. Between the 23rd – 25th May at the Birmingham NEC. Quality Through Qualifications At FIT As part of ongoing plans to create an industry that strives to increase the level of professionalism through qualified employees, GQA Qualifications Limited will be promoting its vision of achieving ‘Quality through Qualifications’ to visitors at this year’s FIT Show. GQA is the only recognised Awarding Body working with the fenestration sector to develop and regulate qualifications. The qualifications are delivered through a network of over 70 training centres throughout the UK, who provide employers and employees with help and assistance to ensure learning is kept to the maximum level of competence needed to underpin industry professionalism. 50 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
Mick Clayton, CEO for the business, talks about the thinking behind the vision: “There is a great deal to be said about the skills gap in construction related industries, and the window and door market is no different. Development through formal qualifications is a sure way of filling the gaps and will inevitably lead to an increase in consumer confidence when good, quality installations are supplied. “GQA aims to give assurance to consumers by qualifying individual’s skills and reinforcing their commitment to their role. New entrants and apprentices coming into the sector should have the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to provide a consumer with a well manufactured,
surveyed and installed window or door and a programme of learning through qualifications, is a way of achieving this.” Mick adds. Many, GQA Qualified Installers are currently involved with an industry ‘Approved Installer Scheme’, and GQA look to the operators of the schemes, to promote and practice the GQA vision. Mick continues: “There are currently multiple Approved Installer Schemes available to the installer and GQA actively builds relationships with these organisations, allowing them to offer companies the opportunity to embrace the principles of providing ‘Quality through Qualifications’ and give assurance to the end-user when carrying out work in their homes. “We encourage fabricators, installers and surveyors to visit us on stand C43, and find out more on how becoming more qualified opens up opportunities to you and your business.” Mick comments. of new concepts and innovative features with a large, yet targeted audience. Visitors to the stand can benefit from the company’s three decades of experience and meet the UK’s leading technical, marketing and sales support staff, who will be happy to help in any way. “One notable absence from The VEKA UK Group’s stand this year

As the certification body has grown in strength, size and scope – it has expanded to offer so many support services that Austin and the team are having their own dedicated Assure stand. You can visit D2, just across from the main VEKA stand, for advice on all the latest legislation regarding certification, energy ratings and much more. The latest offering from Assure actually saves fabricators thousands of pounds on testing and certification.
“Whether it’s products, services, marketing advice or technical support, I believe that both The VEKA UK Group and the Assure stands have something to help build businesses of all kinds – and I’ll look forward to meeting many customers, and indeed potential customers, at the Show.” www.vekauk.com

Origin To Fuel Installer Business
Growth At FIT Show 2017 Fabricators and installers can improve profitability and grow their businesses by visiting the Origin stand at this year’s FiT Show. The British manufacturer of bi-fold and residential doors, windows and blinds will be presenting its entire Origin Home Range and sharing details of how it supports its partners to assist in business growth. Visitors will be able to learn more about Origin’s revolutionary online ordering system, Sale Safe, which has been designed to drastically streamline the process of quoting and ordering. Rather than quoting on individual products, live demonstrations will show how its clever functionality allows customer projects to be built, saving considerable time on administration and allowing for more proactive lead follow up. In addition to this, those in attendance will find out more about the gold standard of service that Origin offers, including comprehensive marketing support, ‘Fitter Fitter’ installation training to encourage best practice, sales training, technical support and more. Visitors will also be given a sneak peek of a secret new Origin product that will be available to partners later in the year. Ben Brocklesby, Origin’s Sales and Marketing Director, comments: “Origin always produces a show-stopping stand, and this year is definitely no exception. We will be detailing the extensive range of services that we offer to our partners, which includes everything from mar52 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
keting support through to installation training for our products. Our partners are part of the Origin family and we are constantly evolving to try to help them grow their businesses. Our unrivalled lead times, high quality products and exceptional service are all part of the ‘Origin package’, helping our partners to grow alongside us. The show also acts as the perfect platform for us to educate other installers about the benefits of working with us.” Origin will use the FiT Show, held at Birmingham’s NEC on 23-25 May 2017, to debut the Residential Door to the FiT Show audience for the first time. Originally unveiled to partners in September 2016, it can either be used as a front or garage door, combining security and aesthetics for an integrated front of house look. Sharing similar style profile to the bi-fold and window, the addition of the Origin Residential Door ensures a harmonious look between products, creating complete front of house unity.
With over 35 panel choices to choose from, ranging from the ultra-modern through to traditional options, it ensures that partners can cater for all property types effortlessly. Expertly engineered for optimum energy efficiency, both the frame and sash feature have an advanced polyamide break to limit heat transfer. The panel is also made with a highly efficient Thermimax core. In addition to showcasing the Residential Door, Origin’s stand will also have its renowned window system – the only window in the industry to feature a stunning internal and external flush casement. Designed so the sash sits perfectly in line with the frame, and with no overlapping profile, it ensures a smart and elegant appearance. The Origin Window is the only window in the UK that can be upgraded to the revolutionary Aerogel, which boasts the lowest thermal conductivity of any solid material, claim the company. Using just 10mm of it in the thermal break of the window can boost thermal efficiency by up to 67%. When combined with the Origin Window, it delivers an A++ energy rating and certified 0.9 U-Value. Visitors will also be able to see Origin’s range of made-tomeasure blinds, catering for any requirement, with each blind offering a different effect, look and feel. Plus, Origin’s Bi-Fold Door will also be on show. These expertly engineered, high quality products make up the Origin Home range, coming together in a show-stopping stand. Brocklesby concludes: “We will also be using FiT Show 2017 to unveil a brand new product, which we are confident is going to be a gamechanger within the marketplace. It allows us to offer even more to our partners, a one-stop-shop if you will, and we are really excited about it. I am not allowed to say anything more than that for now, but visitors will want to make sure they have the Origin stand on their FiT Show planner.” For further information about Origin, please visit www.origin-global.com.
Emmegi (UK) Giveaway At FIT Show
Emmegi (UK) are offering a great incentive to customers who place an order for one of their popular Atla Coop Itaca Solution crimping machines at the FIT Show. They are giving away a free TKE259 sealant applicator worth £3000 with every Itaca Solution crimper ordered on the stand (K10).
The crimping machine and applicator work perfectly together, and the TKE259 even now comes with low cost consumables direct from Emmegi (UK) for the first time. Once dubbed the ‘aluminium sector’s best kept secret, the Atla Coop Itaca Solution NC controlled crimping machine featured on the Emmegi stand at the FIT Show back in 2014. Since then, it has gone on to become one of Emmegi’s best selling lines. It’s particularly popular with fabricators who use several different aluminium systems because it allows them to switch between profiles without having to manually set it every time. A 12 axis NC control system does the reset in minutes instead of hours. The crimper can accommodate
virtually any size or shape of aluminium profile up to 120mm high, and two fully adjustable blades even allow it to be used for crimping stepped profiles without any additional special tooling. Emmegi customers report that they get payback on the crimper in just a few months and many now have several of them operating in their factories. This includes the likes of: Alu-Tec, Everglade, Marshall Brown and Window Warehouse. The accompanying TKE259, which is being offered as part of the promotion, is an easy to use, low maintenance option for applying specialist sealant to protect against joint corrosion. It is recommended by some of the UK’s leading systems companies as a simple and effective way to seal joints and to improve the thermal, acoustic and weather protection barrier on aluminium windows and doors. It automatically optimises the amount of sealant required on each surface and so eliminates wastage and minimises messy overspill. www.emmegi.com WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017 53

Brisant Secure, creator of Ultion, the high security cylinder door lock, will be exhibiting a new product at the FIT Show in May 2017. Brisant says Lock Lock will transform the way the industry locks doors. Brisant is next to the entrance of Hall 6, and will showcase Ultion, Keycap and Keyring as well as Lock Lock, which will take Brisant and the industry in a new direction. Ultion is the lock that transformed the industry’s security expectations. Keyring also makes smartphones ring, even when they’re on silent. Homeowners will never lose their keys or phones again. Brisant CEO Nick Dutton says: “Ultion transformed the cylinder door lock market by helping the industry sell more doors. Keycap and Keyring enable homeowners to personalise their Ultion keys, but Keyring is part of the ‘smart home’ revolution. Windows For
Renovation Project
Glazerite UK Group Limited customer, Thistle Windows and Conservatories, has supplied three unusual curved windows as part of a large scale period property renovation in Aberdeen, for local installer and long-standing customer, Fitzbuild. Andy Cadman, Sales Director at Thistle Windows explains: “The granite-built property had its original timber windows which were around 100 years old and the homeowners wanted to replace them with new, more efficient windows. Keen to replicate the original heritage look, which included three curved frames in the upstairs front bedroom, the homeowners contacted Dave Fitzpatrick from Fitzbuild, having seen the quality of his workmanship at a nearby property. Dave has been a regular customer of our trade division for many years and has experience in fitting this type of window before, and was aware of the installation requirements.” The complete project included around 40 windows as well as residential doors, all finished in white. The specialist blending of the VEKA system and glass units for the curved frames were handled by Glazerite’s Bolton Division, who arranged for the finished products to be shipped to Aberdeen. Group Director Jason Thompson commented: “We always strive to achieve our customers’ requirements, and work with them every step of the way to get the detail right. Vista’s Leading Composite Door
Withstands Xtreme Attacks
Keith continued. “But there’s a huge amount more to it than that. GRP was designed to be able to resist heavy impacts. In World War 2, the Royal Navy even used it as a counter-measure against magnetic mines. Document Q told us it can withstand knives – now we know it can withstand wheelie bins, crowbars and cars, too. If the assailants weren’t aware of its security credentials before, they certainly are now.
XtremeDoor, the composite door by Merseyside fabricator Vista, has successfully thwarted two separate break-in attempts in the space of a few weeks. XtremeDoors installed at a newbuild property in Southampton and a Eurocell depot in Camberley, fought off burglars with crowbars, wheelie bins used as battering rams and even a car. “It’s never good to hear about incidents like these, and our sympathies are with the property owners for any damage that the would-be burglars might have caused,” commented Vista Managing Director Keith Sadler, “but it’s fantastic to hear that in both cases the XtremeDoor stood up to everything the criminals could throw at it. “We specifically designed the XtremeDoor to rank among the most secure doors on the market. It’s PAS 24 approved and fully compliant with Document Q, passing the stringent cut-through
test. It’s also achieved the Secured By Design accreditation – and now, on top of these rigorous quality and security checks, we have two real-world examples of the XtremeDoor providing the most robust resistance to attempted break-in.” Vista has recently enhanced the XtremeDoor’s security performance even further. The latest version of the product comes with a 100% thicker 4mm GRP skin. “The GRP constructed composite door has come in for some criticism in the past, and has been dismissed by some as a ‘foam filled’ door set,”
“Along with an enhanced slab and thicker GRP skin, the XtremeDoor now also features an upgraded five-hook locking system which pulls tighter to the frame, and an anti-snap, bump, pick and drill cylinder. Every element of the XtremeDoor has been pain-stakingly developed to offer the best performance. When you add one of the most extensive choices of colours and designs in the industry and exceptional thermal efficiency, you’ve got a best-inclass composite door perfect for any property or purpose.” www.vistapanels.co.uk
Distinction Doors Highlights Importance Of Colour Distinction Doors opened the doors of its stateof-the-art in-house paint plant two years ago and today the company is celebrating the wisdom of the decision to invest in colour. Andy Grogan, Distinction’s National Sales Manager said: “Even two years ago we could see that colour could only become a more important part of choosing a composite door, which is why we made the decision to bring painting in-house back then. The move helped us improve quality, cost and lead times when it came to colour and has proved a very sound investment for both our business and our customers. We have a six day lead time on painted doors and every door that leaves our paint plant comes with a ten year surface guarantee.” As Andy says, colour has really taken off in the past couple of years and Distinction has kept pace with 62 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
demand by being at the forefront of the development. “Homeowners are more adventurous with colour in so many ways and we have the ability to respond accordingly,” he says. The company has increased its range of pre-pigmented colours to include perennial favourites Anthracite Grey and Distinction Chartwell Green. The move has meant there is more space in the paint plant to meet the increasing demand for bespoke colour. “Colour is big news and there’s no doubt homeowners are influenced by trends in this area. News such as the announcement of Pantone’s colour of the year as Greenery and the emphasis on all shades of pink in fashion circles will all be reflected in the colours that go on order in our paint plant,” commented Andy.

ColorLine
Door Frame Service Extended
To Include Kommerling
RegaLead’s recently launched ColorLine service for composite door fabricators is going from strength to strength, with the most recent addition of KÖMMERLING’s 070 and C70 Gold® suites, including 70mm,82mm and 112mm transoms for sidelights and top boxes. Designed as the ideal solution for matching or complementing door frames, the ColorLine service provides pre-painted profile in a three-part kit form. KÖMMERLING fabricators will now be able to match any paint colour on a 3 day lead time direct from stock. Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director at RegaLead explains:
“We’re very pleased to welcome KÖMMERLING fabricators to the ColorLine family, and to extend to them the increased sales opportunities provided by matching or complementing their frames with their doors. Independent research recently highlighted to us that 75% of consumers would like a colour-matched frame option and 70% of installers want to offer this across their range. But only 25% of fabricators currently offer colour-matched frames across all door colours. This is no longer the case for KÖMMERLING fabricators who now have access to this brand new home improvement market.”
Stefan Seidel, Managing Director of profine UK adds: “Colour is such an important driver in our market. Woodgrains and colours now represent around 40% of sales with a rapid rise in the last 5 years, something that’s also been influenced by the trends seen in mainland Europe. It looks set to continue to be very much be part of the future for the industry from the period inspired colours, to the more contemporary rich and bold colours. If you look at the adoption of door slab colours from the composite door market, then market penetration and subsequent growth in general window profiles, is the obvious next step. “That’s why it’s important for us to be able to arm our customers with products that help them meet any change in market demand. It’s a fundamental business proposition, that you need to differentiate your product offering as we do with our market leading range of PVC-U window and door systems. Our customers buy into our brand and understand the need to stand out. Our strategic relationship with the ColorLine brand will help us collectively continue to do just this.” Guy concludes: “It’s great that KÖMMERLING fabricators now have access to ColorLine so can benefit from the self-assembly painted profile kit that eliminates all the usual problems associated with using external painting contractors. We’d be delighted to invite any KÖMMERLING fabricators who’d like to have a personalised tour of the ColorLine facility to give us a call.” For more information, please visit www.regalead.co.uk or call 0161 946 1164 for a copy of our brand new ColorLine brochure WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017 65

Grey Is The New White! There is an undeniable trend within the Home Improvement market from white towards colour when choosing replacement windows, doors and roofline products. Grey is rapidly becoming the new white! At Freefoam we are seeing these market forces converting into sales and have seen a significant increase in orders for Anthracite Grey fascia and soffit during the last year. Installers can now provide homeowners the opportunity to create a fully coordinated roofline for their home by offering Freefoam’s new Anthracite Gutter. Introduced last year, the Anthracite Grey rainwater range is an exact match (RAL No.7016) to the already popular fascia and soffit products and coordinates with many popular shades of window frames and door finishes. Deceuninck Goes The Extra Colourful Mile Deceuninck continues to build momentum as one of the market leaders for colour with the announcement that as well as holding 26 colourways in stock for profile, it also holds the same number of colours in stock, for matching trims, ancillaries and cills. “Fabricators are switching to Deceuninck for our comprehensive colour offering, but more importantly the fact we can deliver these colours quickly and hassle free,” explains Rob McGlennon of Deceuninck. “Plenty of systems companies offer a good range of colours, but not from stock. That’s what makes us different. However, what a lot of people don’t realise is that in addition to offering 26 colourways from stock on our profile, we also offer the same breadth of range and speed of delivery on matching ancillaries, trims and cills. “We don’t think our customers should have to ‘make do’ where colour is concerned and it’s the whole package they need – there’s no point in supplying coloured profile quickly if we don’t have the coloured ancillaries available at the same time. In addition to 66 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
the 26 colours we hold in stock, we also have a huge array of other colours available to ensure we can also meet the more unusual requests that inevitably come in. “It’s taken a lot of time, effort and investment for us to get to this point but we saw the trend for colour coming and we wanted to be ready on behalf of our customers and our customers’ customers. The fact that we planned ahead and put our money where our mouth is, has given our customers the ability to get ahead of the competition, which is precisely what Deceuninck always aims to do for our fabricators and their installer customers.”

A Winning
Combination From Mila Mila has delivered what for many fabricators is the perfect combination of security and durability. It has launched a new version of its hugely popular ProSecure two star security handle in Supa stainless steel. The SupaSecure handle is designed primarily for use in coastal and high pollution environments, but Mila also expects it to appeal to all those fabricators who are increasingly using stainless steel hardware to target the buoyant premium sector of the doors market. Richard Gyde, Mila’s Managing Director, said: “We’ve responded to specific demand from customers who want to be able
to supply stainless steel as a standard option on their premium composite doors and offer it as an upgrade on their other ranges, without compromising on security. “The big advantage of the new SupaSecure is that it has all the security credentials of our existing zinc alloy, two star ProSecure handle, including PAS24 and Secured by Design accreditation, combined with the proven performance and durability of our Supa stainless steel. We think that’s a winning combination.” Like the ProSecure handle, the SupaSecure version can be used with a 1 star cylinder
Mila is so confident in the quality of the material and on its testing and quality assurance procedures that it offers a straightforward 25 year guarantee on both the performance and finish of the handle, as long as the right grade has been chosen for that location. There is even a postcode checking service available to make it easy for installers to fit the right one. Before launch, the Supa handle range was independently performance tested to hardware standard BS EN 1906 Grade 4 at Exova and the 316 grade passed more than 1000 hours in a salt spray test. The new SupaSecure handle is the latest addition to Mila’s extensive stainless steel range, which already includes a standard door handle, letter plates, door knockers and escutcheons, enabling customers to offer a fully suited standard or premium door. The whole range is also available in three colour options – polished stainless steel, polished gold stainless and brushed satin stainless steel to suit all tastes and door styles. Best Year Yet For Kenrick Excalibur Sales of Kenrick’s Excalibur multi-point locking system have reached an all-time high with the West Bromwich based company reporting that it has sold 500,000 sets of the shootbolts within the last year. The healthy growth at Kenrick coincides with a recent quarterly report from the CBI which revealed that UK manufacturers have seen strong growth in domestic orders over the previous quarter. The CBI Industrial Trends Survey reported that the volume of domestic orders rose at the fastest pace since July 2014. It also predicted that demand would continue to rise over the next quarter, driven by a combination of domestic and export orders. Steve Jones, managing director at Kenrick, says: “Despite the uncertainty of Brexit, optimism seems to be rising among UK manufacturers, which is really encouraging. We’re delighted that the last year has been so strong for Kenrick
with demand for our Excalibur shootbolt showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. This flagship product delivers high performance and greater security but it’s also competitively priced, which enables installers to pass on the cost savings to their customers.
“This peak in sales underlines that homeowners do place security and value as top priorities when choosing their windows. This is the best year yet for the Excalibur shootbolt and we expect the next 12 months to be positive too as sales continue to rise. We will be pulling out all the stops to increase production rates to stay ahead of the game in what remains a highly competitive marketplace.” Suitable for all PVC-u, aluminium and timber windows, the Excalibur shootbolt system is Secured by Design approved and can comfortably satisfy the requirements of PAS 24, 2012. It delivers first rate
security features for the homeowner and ease of installation for the installer. Durable and reliable, it’s a multi-point locking system that benefits from steel shoot bolts, a robust unhanded die-cast gearbox and bi-directional diecast claws. www.kenricks.co.uk
Hardware Specialists To Bring Newly
Evolved Products To Market Hardware specialist Caldwell UK has radically improved two of its products in a move that will see its customers benefit from better systems at no extra cost. Caldwell are now at the end of the process of improving and re-engineering its Ultra Lift (UL2) and Torso spring balances so that they are even higher performing. From August, UL2 will be replaced by the Ultra Lift 6 (UL6) and in June Torso will be replaced by the new Torso II version. Darren Murphy, Director of Opera-
tions at Caldwell, comments: “We have spent months of design and engineering time to bring these new and improved products to market. There are no extra costs incurred from this process and the new products will not impact on our customer’s current manufacturing or fitting processes. “Each product brings significant advantages to the manufacturer and end-user. For example, Torso II will be able to hold a higher weight within a 19-millimetre tube diameter as opposed to a 25-millimetre diameter.”
The standard Ultralift balances can be specified for use in both tilt-in and standard sash windows. A double sprung design means they can offer the end user up to 80% increased mechanical advantage compared with standard operation. Like Ultralift balances, the Torso models are double sprung to give the end user significant levels of mechanical assistance when operating the window. Torso balances, however, can cater for much heavier sash weights, supporting sashes from 3kg – 60kg. www.caldwell.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017 69

Available in carbon grey, harvest brown and terra brick finishes, engineered copolymer interlocking roof tiles offer a strong aesthetic match to traditional roof tiles and slate finishes. John Leary, Sales and Marketing Director, Emplas said: “The Ultraframe UltraRoof380 is a really smart solution, opening-up a whole new sector of the market. “The aesthetic is exceptionally strong, genuinely making it very difficult to identify the Ultraroof as anything other than a traditional roof slate. “But it’s also as a fully integrated system, its much smarter. It can be made water tight in two hours, tiled in six, it can be configured to accommodate and work with a
whole spectrum of conservatory designs. “This ease of installation, coupled with genuinely exceptional aesthetics, delivers significant opportunity to installers in a rapidly growing sector of the market.” The lightweight modular system can also be designed to accommodate Velux-style roof-lights or far lower cost roof windows. An internal pelmet, replicates a more substantial orangery style internal aesthetic. “The conservatory replacement sector is a major growth area for installers”, continued Leary. “This is being accompanied by a move away from those traditional Edwardian and Victorian-type extensions towards more flexible sun room, orangery, orangery/ conservatory type cross-overs and ‘family living spaces’. “The Ultraframe UltraRoof380, is a very affordable solution for the homeowner but still very high margin platform opportunity for the installer because of the installation efficiencies that it delivers.” www.emplas.co.uk

Astraseal Adds A New Angle To Their Range With
The Skypod Acute
With an ever-expanding product range spread across uPVC and aluminium, designed to provide installers with more opportunities to sell, Astraseal has added a new perspective to their roof lantern range with the addition of Eurocell’s innovative Skypod Acute. At a steeper, 35-degree pitch, the Skypod Acute allows installers to reach new customers with a more compact roof lantern. The Acute is a full 15-degrees taller than the standard Skypod range, creating a slimmer base and more opportunities to add natural light to unexplored spaces and properties. “The Skypod range from Eurocell has transformed the roof lantern market providing a cost-effective uPVC alternative to aluminium, which achieves the same stylish aesthetics and ultra-high efficiency,” comments Zac Nedimovic, Sales and Marketing Manager at Astraseal. “The Skypod Acute continues this trend and allows installers to attract new business with a universal product thanks to its smaller aperture.”
Available in two-bar, three-bar and square configurations, the Acute combines a versatile design with slim sightlines and stylish glazing bars. The Skypod Acute also takes advantage of Eurocell’s full suite of frame and glass colours and balances contemporary style with outstanding performance, achieving U-Values as low as 1.0W/m2K. “The 35-degree design is also very popular and commonly found in commercial spaces such as education buildings and offices, allowing installers to further branch into new markets,” adds Zac. “Installers offering the Acute can undercut aluminium suppliers with a high-performance uPVC solution.” www.astraseal.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017 71
PRODUCT NEWS “As the solid roof market continues to grow we wanted to bring to market a high performance fixed roof light which can help our customers to increase their margins and add more value to their roof sales. “Following the huge success of our WarmCore window and door systems, it made complete sense to utilise this technology to design the new fixed light so our customers know they are getting exceptional thermal performance as standard.
New WarmCore Fixed Roof Light For The Celsius Solid Roof Synseal Group has launched a new fixed roof light for their Celsius Solid Roof which uses a stepped glass structure and WarmCore technology maximise light and offer excellent thermal performance. WarmCore products use a unique multi-chambered thermal core which provides 25% more thermal efficiency than standard aluminium window and door systems. Combining this technology with 6mm outer and 4mm inner toughened glass, the new WarmCore Fixed Roof Light offers impressive U-values of around 1.4. The stepped glass structure covers the whole area of the window, right up to the subtle ceramic edge which sits flush to the roof, to create an incredibly clean looking finished product. This fully glazed design approach means the product has 41% increased visible glass area 72 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
compared to the equivalent sized market leader in roof lights claims the company. The new fixed light comes in three sizes – 630mm x 700mm, 630mm x 1200mm and an impressive 630mm x 1700mm – and has been designed to be easy to integrate into the Celsius Solid Roof. It comes in white and anthracite grey internal colours with a black exterior, and a discreet black flashing kit that is barely noticeable from an external viewpoint. Andy Jones, Group Sales and Marketing Director, said: “Solid roofs are a really popular choice among installers at the moment, particularly for retrofit projects as they are flexible, easy to fit and can be incorporated into practically any existing structure in no time at all.
“The market place for fixed roof lights which can be easily incorporated into tiled roofs is very restricted, so we wanted to design a product which would be really straightforward to install and which offers maximum natural light and a clean looking finish. “Feedback from our customers shows that the majority of homeowners who have roof lights installed in conservatories or extensions never really use them as opening windows because they’re out of reach and inconvenient. Realistically, customers install roof windows to add more natural light, not to improve ventilation. “You will be amazed by how much more light you can add to a room by removing the open/ close mechanism from a roof light and using glass across the whole width and length of the aperture. We think this is going to be a real game changer for homeowners, helping them to get light and thermally superior living spaces that can be used 365 days a year.” The new fixed light is available now as an option on any Celsius Solid Roof through Synseal stockists and will be on display at the WarmCore product stand at next month’s FIT Show, Stand R15. www.celsiussolidroof.co.uk

machining centre can both cut and prep profiles in a similar way to the Quadra, but can also accommodate the complex, oversized curtain walling profiles which make up a large proportion of what MAF fabricates.
Emmegi’s Sales Manager Jim O’Connell and Service Engineer Lukasz Szulc helped the team at MAF choose and install a long bed Satellite XT machining centre to replace one of their existing 3 axis models.
The 10.5m long bed on the Satellite XT also allows the positioning of the clamps to be done separately from the gantry so that different workpieces can be machined at the same time in two work areas, or one end loaded or unloaded while the machine is operating at the other.
MAF had originally contacted Emmegi (UK) because they were considering purchasing a top of the range Quadra machine to increase the functionality available in their factory, but Jim was able to advise them that the Satellite XT was the model which actually better matched their requirements. Helps Make History
In West Yorkshire Aluminium curtain walling, windows and doors from manufacturer Senior Architectural Systems have been specified for use on the striking new West Yorkshire History Centre in Wakefield.
The new home of the West Yorkshire Archive Service has been designed by architects Broadway Malyan and built by Bardsey Construction Ltd, with fabricator Aire Valley Architectural Alumin-
ium Ltd undertaking the manufacture and installation of the fenestration package.
The upper part of the building features dramatic perforated metal cladding which appears to ‘float’ above the fully glazed lower levels beneath. The light and airy design of the ground floor office and exhibition space benefits from the slim sightlines of Senior’s popular SF52 alu-
minium curtain wall system and SPW600 tilt and turn thermally broken aluminium windows. To create the seamless glazed façade of the lower part of the building, Senior’s SPW500 aluminium commercial doors have also been incorporated. The building will store over 10 million archive records across three floors and as such, it was essential to create the ideal internal environment that would preserve and protect the historical documents. With the need to comply to the required air tightness targets a key challenge, the specification of Senior’s thermally-enhanced SF52 aluminium curtain walling alongside the low U-values offered by Senior’s aluminium doors and windows helped to provide the perfect solution. www.seniorarchitectural.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017 75

GLASSOLUTIONS Employs Unique System To Complete One Bedford Avenue Structural Glazing Installation A truly innovative approach to structural glazing installation has enabled commercial glazing specialists GLASSOLUTIONS to overcome a series of stringent health and safety limitations on a high-profile commercial project in central London. Using a specially designed sliding track system, GLASSOLUTIONS was able to reduce the glass installation footprint for the site, safeguard the installation team from the risks associated with working at height, and advance the speed of the installation at One Bedford Avenue by a very considerable margin. Occupying a prominent corner of Tottenham Court Road, One Bed76 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
ford Avenue is a multi-use development which combines commercial offices with retail units to create a versatile multi-use space. Designed by Stirling-nominated architects Bennett’s Associates, One Bedford Avenue replaces two outdated office blocks with highly attractive and energy efficient spaces, with natural light on three sides and spectacular views at the upper levels. Working with project managers Mace, GLASSOLUTIONS delivered a semi-bespoke window system, with window profiles designed specifically for the project to meet the design intent and to accommodate associated building movements. Wicona curtain walling provided aesthetic benefits as
well as well as superior U-values and air tightness ratings; GLASSOLUTIONS’ unique VS-1 structural glazing system also formed an integral part of the installation, with the building’s main entrance and reception area using the system to achieve an attractive aesthetic effect. However, the tight specification was not the only issue the GLASSOLUTIONS Installation team had to resolve. With extremely limited external access and a site perimeter not much greater than the building’s footprint, a high priority for the project was to create a safe method of working that could be completed from the inside of the building. Additionally, with other building work taking place concurrently, it was essential that as much as possible of the floor slab area could remain operational and safe throughout the installation process. To meet these challenges, the

GLASSOLUTIONS project team created an innovative sliding track system to move the glass units across the floor plate, and place them on to the façade at the place of installation. As well as removing the need for floor cranes, this installation method allowed the installation team to remain safely behind perimeter protection at all points in the process whilst also freeing up the floor slab for other trades to operate safely. In addition to safeguarding the onsite team from many of the risks associated with working at height, GLASSOLUTIONS’ unusual installation system delivered further benefits for the project. As well as reducing the number of operatives required to move each unit, the new process allowed units to be
fitted at a greatly improved rate, increasing from an anticipated 4.5 units per day per team (using a traditional floor mounted crane) to an impressive peak of 17 units. These combined benefits allowed the installation to achieve an accelerated programme, to the client’s great delight. GLASSOLUTIONS’ work at One Bedford Avenue took place over June and July 2016, and the full construction project was completed in March 2017. On GLASSOLUTIONS’ involvement, Clive Everett, GLASSOLUTIONS’ Design and Technical Director, said: “One Bedford Avenue was a development which presented us with a complex set of constraining parameters, requiring the design team to respond with an innovative
and bespoke solution. A clear understanding of the client’s needs, combined with good communication and a collaborative attitude were key to ensuring that the installation was successful. “In the end, not only was the installation itself a triumph, but our innovation-led approach to ticking all the project’s boxes had other positive results, such as increasing our rate of installation and enhancing safety. This sets a new precedent for the GLASSOLUTIONS contracting division – going forward, we hope to be able to apply the processes we used on the One Bedford Avenue project to deliver similar benefits to future installations.” www.glassolutions.co.uk. Profile 22’S Optima
Effortlessly Provides 20th Century Style For A 1930S Profile 22 installer Max Glass has recently completed an impressive installation of Optima windows and patio doors in a 1930s home in Leeds. Stephen Hobson, Max Glass’s Director, says: “Our customer lived in a 1930s home and they wanted to maintain its period looks. The brief we had from them was that the new windows and the leading needed to replicate the original designs so they would not look like replacement windows.” The project was a sizeable one: in total 5 three-sided bay windows, 9 casement windows, 4 arched top windows and 1 78 WINDOW NEWS MAY 2017
sliding patio door needed to be replaced. Stephen recommended Optima from Profile 22 for the job. With a white foil finish inside and out and square leading, the windows would bring a heritage look while the Window Energy rating of A and the low maintenance finish would ensure they had all the advantages of 21st century technology and innovation. Profile 22 says Optima is an incredibly versatile system and it has a huge range of ancillaries and add-ons to enable windows in every style and to suit every property type to be manufactured. But while its looks are
diverse, at its heart it is a system designed for the modern home with optimal thermal performance and rigidity thanks to its 6 chamber outer frame and 5 chamber sash construction. The windows and door were manufactured by Profile 22 fabricator Heritage Trade Frames in Bolton and installed by the Max Glass team in just one week and the end results are stunning. Stephen comments: “We are delighted with the results, as are the homeowners. They had recently renovated the property to an extremely high standard and the windows were the final touch needed. They now have an aesthetically pleasing home that’s more energy efficient and easier to maintain.” In short, it’s everything you would expect from an Optima home! www.profile22.co.uk

Louise Watson comments: “The balcony and door glass feature hand traced maps of each neighbourhood. The balcony panels are made from 11.5mm toughened laminated glass with a sandblasted and hydrofluoric acid tone finish design. The double glazed units in the front doors feature a segment of the neighbourhood map sandblasted onto the internal 6.4mm toughened panel with the 4mm toughened external panel sandblasted all over with the exception of a motif, unique to each site, giving a layered effect at night time when the lights are on in the property.
RegaLead Puts Sandblasting On The
Map For Cambridge Residents RegaLead recently pushed the concept of truly bespoke front doors to the max, delivering a unique project on a Cambridge housing development. Comprising 180 new homes for KeepMoat in association with Cambridge City Council and manufactured by Britdoors, lucky residents in a selection of properties have had their own local area maps designed into their doors’ decorative glass units. Paul Edwards, RegaLead’s Door Industry Market Manager commented: “This is a perfect example of how our sandblasting solutions can offer true differentiation and appeal hugely to the whole spectrum of individual tastes. As
this project shows, whatever the design, whether for one door or 1000 doors, using our Cadblast technology, customers can take a vision and make it into reality. “For this project, the 93 high performance decorative units were sandblasted on toughened laminated glass with a map of the local areas including Latimer, Water Lane, Aylesbrough, Colville, Campkin and Atkins. The very talented designers and two of the UK’s leading glass artists Louise Watson and Zoe Chamberlain , drew a different detailed map for each of the areas which was then accurately replicated through the sandblasting process. The result is stunning.
“As a key part of the project, we worked with groups of young people from the neighbourhoods around the new developments to generate starting points for the designs. Exploring symbols and abstract motifs to represent the meaning of Home, students looked at signs and symbols from different cultures for inspiration. Using an etching press, the students experimented with creating their own abstract motifs, layering and overlapping to create resources for us to turn into the final designs for the door glass and balcony panels”. Paul concludes: “From simple house names and numbers, to detailed 3D graphics like these maps, sandblasting with RegaLead offers genuine differentiation to suit every taste. We love getting involved in projects like these which span creative and commercial. It’s the very reason we acquired Decorative Door Products in 2011 to allow us to do short to medium sized product runs of truly innovative bespoke door glass.” For more information on decorative products for glass, windows and doors from RegaLead visit www.regalead.co.uk or call 0161 946 1164. Each van is driven by one of our Business Development Managers, who are all fully trained to present the features and benefits of our best-selling ECOSlide PVC-U vertical sliding sash windows. The quality of our products will speak for themselves, with details such as our signature extruded anti-jemmy bar cill design and exquisitely-shaped metal hardware, both of which are exclusive to Victorian Sliders. European foam tape manufacturer ISO-CHEMIE has won an international quality award for its sealing tape ISO-BLOCO 600. The tape, which can seal joints up to 42 mm in prefabricated concrete, brick work, curtain walling and cladding, has gained the prestigious RAL quality mark.
International Mark Of Quality For
Iso-Chemie’s Tape
RAL is seen in Germany and internationally as a symbol for product quality and ISO-BLOCO 600 has been recognised for its high performance joint sealing, airtightness and weather resistance capabilities. The versatile ISO BLOCO 600 range can be used to provide effective gap seals to accommodate expansion and movement while remaining permeable to trapped water and water vapour – similar to a flexible breathable style material for the building facade. Quick and easy-to-apply, the self-adhesive ISO BLOCO 600 tapes can be used to seal joints providing excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties. Product can accommodate a temperature range of -30° to +90° and is impermeable to driving rain with a minimum of 600 Pa, making it one of the best performing tapes in its class.

Once installed, a building is better protected from elemental factors like wind, dust and moisture ingress by accommodating the changes in structural movement caused by environmental, cyclical and settlement factors. Presented at ISO CHEMIE’s Aalen headquarters in Germany as the firm marked 40 years as a sealants’ manufacturer, Andy Swift, the UK national sales manager, said: “ISO-CHEMIE has a strong commitment to providing customers with high quality innovative product, so gaining the RAL seal
of approval is another significant achievement for us.” RAL quality-assured joint sealing tapes require regular testing to DIN 18542 for airtightness and resistance to driving rain up to at least 600 Pa. The quality and testing requirements demand both monthly in-house monitoring and a biannual external inspection by a neutral testing institute. These characteristics must be maintained beyond 10 years of natural weathering – this is checked on an annual basis. a.swift@iso-chemie.co.uk

“We met in April in Loughborough for our first ever team canoeing experience. Thankfully the weather was glorious and the ladies paired up to complete 4 miles on the River Soar, after a very comprehensive briefing session from Mark Bache of Epwin Group – our canoeing expert and coach. Day two saw the team take to their bikes for their inaugural ‘team’ bike ride lead by fellow challenge stalwart Alan Sadler, who is also supporting the team throughout the challenge in August. It was amazing how quickly everyone pulled together and cycled as a team. “Onwards and upwards to more of the same in Stratford-upon-Avon. We have a couple of
tough days planned for the ladies, but I have no doubt they will rise to the challenge!
