ReSolve Agrees Contract with Anglian Home Improvements to Fulfil Everest 2020 Ltd Customer Orders

Cameron Gunn, Chris Farrington and Lee Manning, Partners at ReSolve, were appointed as joint administrators of Everest 2020 Limited (“Everest” or the “Company”) on 24 April 2024.

Following a previous sale out of administration which took place in 2020 and despite significant investment, Everest has continued to face financial difficulties as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Upon appointment, ReSolve worked rapidly to assess all

available options, including a prospective sale of the business as a going concern. Unfortunately, that offer did not materialise and therefore the majority of employees were made redundant on 29 April 2024. ReSolve is providing support to those employees, including information on how to make redundancy payment claims, and have engaged specialist firm Evolve to assist.

The joint administrators have now reached an agreement to sell certain assets to Anglian

Home Improvements (“Anglian” or the “Purchaser”), trading as ASHI Group Ltd.

While the terms of the agreement are finalised, the joint administrators have entered a sub-contractor arrangement that will enable customer orders to be fulfilled by Anglian where possible. This will ensure all Everest customers impacted by the Company’s insolvency will have the opportunity to carry out their home improvement projects.

The interim agreement will enable customers to arrange completion or fulfilment of their orders, including those customers who were mid-way through the installation process, as well as customers who had booked an installation with Everest.

Cameron Gunn, joint administrator and senior partner

at ReSolve commented:

“Despite our best efforts to secure a sale of the business as a going concern, we were racing against the clock and unfortunately it was not possible. We are now focused on supporting employees during this difficult transition. We are pleased to have reached this agreement with Anglian Home Improvements which gives Everest customers the certainty and peace of mind that their home improvement projects can

now be completed.”

Peter Mottershead, executive chairman of Anglian Home Improvements said: “Anglian Home Improvements has agreed with the administrators to support Everest customers in what we know is a very difficult situation, and we hope this agreement will go some way towards alleviating the concern and burden on those Everest customers who have been impacted. Quanex Building Products to Acquire Tyman

Quanex Building Products Corporation (NYSE:NX) (“Quanex” or the “Company”) today announced it has reached agreement with Tyman plc (LSE:TYMN) (“Tyman”) on the terms of a recommended cash and share offer (“the Acquisition”), under which Quanex will acquire the entire issued and to be issued share capital of Tyman for approximately $1.1 billion in enterprise value.

Quanex’s Acquisition of Tyman creates a comprehensive solutions provider in the building products industry, which on a pro forma basis generated approximately $2 billion of revenue in the fiscal year ended October 31, 2023. Tyman’s family of brands includes highly regarded names that boast wide customer bases and offer product solutions in the window and door hardware, commercial access solutions, and seals and extrusions vertical segments for residential and commercial users across its North America, UK and Ireland, and International divisions. Together, the combined company will have global scale and leading

positions across an enhanced offering of differentiated engineered components.

“This transformative acquisition accelerates our journey to becoming ‘BIGGER’, creating a leading supplier of building products with a more diverse geographic footprint, product offering and customer base,” said George Wilson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Quanex. “With significantly enhanced scale, we are looking forward to fully optimizing our portfolio of products and assets to position Quanex as a comprehensive solutions provider for our customers. Importantly, we expect employees of both companies to also benefit from increased opportunities as part of a larger organisation with expanded engineering, design and manufacturing capabilities.

“As one company, we will have an enhanced financial profile grounded in attractive margins, strong free cash flow and a healthy balance sheet, that will enable us to invest in organic and inorganic growth opportunities to deliver

service teams will be making contact with customers in the coming days and weeks to discuss the status of each order with the customers and where possible arrange completion of orders, prioritising those who were part-way through the installation process. I can also confirm that Anglian Home Improvements will honour the terms of the contract, including the price, that had previously been agreed with each customer.”

superior returns for investors. The industrial logic and strategic rationale of bringing Quanex and Tyman together are clear and compelling, and we are confident in our ability to drive meaningful value creation for both Quanex and Tyman shareholders and enhanced market offerings for our customer base,” Wilson concluded.

Nicky Hartery, Tyman chairman, stated in the formal 2.7 announcement released this morning, “This transformative and complementary transaction will strengthen the enlarged business for the benefit of all our customers, employees and other stakeholders. In the context of a rapidly evolving North American marketplace, our Board ultimately determined that this transaction is the best path to maximizing value for Tyman Shareholders, who will be able to realize a meaningful portion of their holding in cash at a significant premium to the prevailing share price while also participating in the future upside of the enlarged group. Today marks the beginning of an exciting next chapter for Tyman and our talented employees, and we look forward to joining with Quanex to deliver future growth and success.”

Cornwall Group Toughens Up To Be Match Fit

Cornwall Group is on target to invest £2 million in Forward Glass by the end of June, including a new toughening plant, which reflects the group’s determination to be ‘match fit’ for when the economy is expected to pick up by the start of 2025.

Cornwall Group acquired Birmingham-based Forward Glass in December 2023, including the 100,000ft2 site it occupies. The company employs more than 90 people, and supplies single toughened, processed glass and stock to the trade.

“Forward Glass already has three tougheners, but they are approaching retirement,” Cornwall Group’s chair Mark Mitchell said. “It is our policy to invest in all parts of the group so that we remain efficient, and that we can guarantee the very best product quality.

“We should have the toughener installed at Forward Glass in Q1 2025, with a second scheduled for Q3 2025 elsewhere in the group.”

Mark said that the market remains volatile, but it is important for the group to be

one step ahead in terms of investment.

“I don’t expect to see the market picking up significantly before the end of this year,” he said. “Compounding that, I also see some distress, with some companies suffering cash flow problems.

“I think the trend for some parts of the market to compete on price is coming home to roost, because a drop in orders has left them nowhere to turn to. This will lead to some casualties, which should release some volume back into the market, but I think it won’t be until Q2 2025 until we see a significant upturn.”

Cornwall Group is also investing in the people and skills at Forward Glass, including new workwear and breakout rooms for colleagues.

TRADE NEWS 6 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

“The people at Forward Glass are very experienced, and we are keen to tap into that knowledge,” Mark said. “So we will be extending our very successful apprenticeship programme to the site in Birmingham, with the first apprentices employed by Christmas.”

Finally, Mark explained that a recent spring clean at Forward Glass in Birmingham has left the company feeling much lighter as a result.

“We’ve been clearing out the archives at the site in Birmingham, which has been very therapeutic,” he said. “Since we are an IT driven company, we are moving away from physical files. So, it made sense to clear out all the old paperwork that had built up over the years. All 10 tonnes of it!” www.cornwallglass.co.uk

GGF and FENSA Jobs Board Plays Matchmaker for the Industry

As the shortfall in skilled labour continues to be an issue for the fenestration industry, the GGF and FENSA have announced that their combined jobs board is helping to match companies with vacancies to fill, with suitable candidates.

The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and FENSA officially launched the jobs board in February and just a few months on say they are pleased to report that the forum is being populated. Chris Beedel, head of advocacy & stakeholder relations at the GGF explained: “In the relatively short time the jobs board has been live, it has seen 54 jobs posted and 40 applicants looking for work and we are confident that these numbers will continue to grow.

“We created the jobs board because our members told us they were struggling to fill vacancies, and yet we knew there were also plenty of people looking for work. The board that sits on both the GGF and FENSA websites holds current

job vacancies as well as profiles of candidates that are looking for work. The system actively matches job seekers with positions that are suited to their skillset and requirements. Of course, the more companies and people that use the jobs board, the more useful it will become as a resource.

“GGF members can post jobs on the board for free, but nonmembers can still use the facility for a fee. Meanwhile individuals looking for work are notified when new jobs matching their criteria are posted, or when new relevant training courses are launched.”

Chris concluded: “We are pleased to be able to offer a solution for both the companies looking for the skilled workforce they need to survive and thrive, as well as the individuals that are investing a lot of time and effort into finding the right job for them. Allowing the two communities to find each other more easily is a great step forward for the industry.”

Affordable Invests

In Supercut Saw Centre To Further Boost Timberlook Production

Affordable Window Systems has invested approximately £250,000 in a new Supercut Saw Centre to increase manufacturing capacity for their Timberlook range.

Since its launch by the UK trade supplier just seven years ago, Timberlook has seen incredible growth, with over 65,000 flush sash Timberlook frames manufactured to date.

To meet this growing demand, Affordable Window Systems has invested in the SC6 model Supercut Saw Centre from Avantek. Unlike typical machines that grip profiles on the inside, the SC6 Saw Centre utilises external gripping for enhanced accuracy and speed, and features three TCT saw blades, according to the company.

This investment, alongside a new purpose-built multimillion-pound factory which opened last year, underscores Affordable Window Systems’ commitment to further growing the Timberlook range, says the company.

“At Affordable, we have always

placed a specific emphasis on growth and future development. Our new Supercut SC6 Saw Centre will play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demand for our Timberlook windows and doors,” comments Amelia Gaughan, head of marketing at Affordable Window Systems.

“The Timberlook range has grown from a small section of our factory to occupying nearly half of the space, and we’re continuing to invest in this range so we can meet the demand we have seen from our national network of installers.

“This new Saw Centre marks a really exciting time at Affordable. We always strive to produce high-quality products and are continually searching for profitable gaps in the market. Without giving too much away, installers can expect some updates to our Timberlook Flush Sash French and Single Doors styles very soon!”

Value Sales In The First Two Months

Were -3.4% Down On Jan-Feb 2023. Volume Was -5.5% With Prices Up +2.2%

The latest Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) report, published in April, shows builders’ merchants’ value sales were down -4.7% in February compared to the same month a year ago. Volume sales dropped -7.5%, while prices increased +3.1%. With an extra trading day this year, like-for-like sales were down -9.2%.

Year-on-year, eight of the twelve categories sold more than February 2023 with Workwear & Safetywear (+18.3%) the leading category. Miscellaneous (+10.2%) and Decorating (+6.2%) also did better than merchants overall. But two of the largest categories –Timber & Joinery Products (-6.4%) and Heavy Building Materials

(-7.9%) – were down. Renewables & Water Saving (-20.9%) was the weakest category.

However, February total value sales increased +4.8% compared to January 2024. Volume sales increased +8.1% and prices were down -3.1%. With one less trading day in February, like-for-like sales were up +9.7%. Eight of the categories sold more month-onmonth with Landscaping (+17.0%) well ahead of the rest. Heavy Building Materials (+5.8%) and two small categories, Renewables & Water Saving (+7.1%) and Services (+6.6%) did better than total merchants. Plumbing Heating & Electrical (-2.1%) and Workwear & Safetywear (-4.2%) were the

worst performers.

Total merchant sales in the 12 months from March 2023 to February 2024 were -5.5% lower than the same period the year before (March 2022 to February 2023). Volume sales were -12.5% lower and prices were up +8.0%. With an additional three trading days in the most recent 12-month period, like-for-like sales were down -6.7%. The three largest categories – Heavy Building Materials (-4.8%), Landscaping (-10.4%) and Timber & Joinery Products (-13.3%) – all sold less.

Total value sales in January to February were -3.4% down on the first two months of 2023.

Mike Rigby, managing director of MRA Research which produces the BMBI report says: “With housebuilding still in the doldrums, repair and maintenance is quietly holding the fort for the construction industry. another round of rises in household bills from April (everything from council and road tax, water bills, broadband costs and even stamps increased at the start of the month), consumers are surprisingly upbeat about their own situation – the Personal Finance Index pushed up to +2 in March 2024 –the highest score since December 2021. Warringtonfire’s

New Birchwood Park Laboratory Hits Commissioning Stage

Warringtonfire’s new $30m laboratory at Birchwood Technology Park is now at the ‘third fix’ stage, with four out of a planned seven of its state-ofthe-art fire resistance testing

furnaces already installed, marking significant progress towards its completion and commissioning.

In August 2023, Warringtonfire, a leading testing and certification

provider, announced it was building a brand new 101,000sqft facility. This significant investment enables Warringtonfire, part of the global Element Materials Technology (Element) group, to expand capacity and meet increasing demand for fire resistance testing of critical fire safety products and systems, such as fire doorsets, intumescent coatings for steel protection, and other passive fire protection solutions.

Ten months into Warringtonfire’s projected 17-month build programme, four furnaces have been fitted and are ready to enter the commissioning phase shortly. The furnaces will be supported by a raft of technology to carefully manage air quality both during and after the testing process.

This includes new air handling and high-performance ventilation systems, as well as cold smoke and hot smoke extraction systems, ensuring a better working environment for employees and compliance with strict environmental regulations. To support this, specialists from Element undertook an extensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) involving acoustics and noise modelling, air quality dispersion modelling, and emissions monitoring.

By the laboratory’s open date, scheduled for January 2025, two vertical furnaces, two horizontal furnaces, and one indicative furnace will be ready to accept test specimens. Another two furnaces, one horizontal and one vertical, will be installed by the end of 2026. In total, this will represent an 80% increase in testing capacity over Warringtonfire’s current site at Holmesfield Road, Warrington. Following the opening of the Birchwood Park laboratory, the existing facility will become a centre of excellence for reaction to fire testing, which are smaller scale tests including spread of flame and heat release.

TRADE NEWS 12 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

Dafydd Llewelyn-Jones, project manager for Element Materials Technology, has been coordinating the laboratory’s construction: “We are on track with our progress and are actually seven weeks ahead of schedule in terms of the furnaces themselves. We are now moving swiftly along to fitting out all the office areas and control rooms, commissioning the building services, and completing the test bay preparation areas.

“It is brilliant to see this project coming together. We have put a significant amount of money into making this new laboratory truly one of the best in Europe, if not the world.”

Besides the investment into furnaces, Warringtonfire is committed to reducing the laboratory’s carbon footprint and making the new site as sustainable as possible. Measures include energy-efficient fans, upgraded power supply transformers that consume minimal electricity when idle, and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure including a fleet of EV forklifts and charging points.

The site will also be well lit, through a combination of natural light from skylights and LED lighting that delivers a high lux level. In addition, the laboratory is set up to accept a blend of clean hydrogen and natural gas once local infrastructure offers this service.

Leigh Hill, a director at Built Environment Europe, commented: “Our new laboratory will be the largest state-of-the-art fire testing and certification facility worldwide, and one of the most environmentally conscious too. We have made substantial investments in procuring the most cutting-edge building service equipment available today, reinforcing our position as industry leader and ensuring sustainable operation for years to come.”

How Window Widget’s Sustainability Strategy

Encouraged Both Action And Attitude

Sustainability is a big deal for every company in every sector. To the point that it’s actually quite hard to know whether a company actually cares, or simply knows that they’re meant to. Greenwashing is a phrase everyone has likely been hearing recently.

According to the company, the antidote is evidence and action. Evidence not just of saying the right things, but of doing the right things at a corporate level. Window Widgets’ focus has been on doing just that –specifically by transforming how they deal with waste and using

that as the first step of a longterm green strategy.

In 2023, Window Widgets successfully diverted over 42 tonnes of PVC waste away from landfill – completing their first full year of being zero waste to landfill. In addition, they put a major emphasis on recycling a greater range of materials leading to the recycling of the following:

• 10 tonnes of cardboard

• 5.2 tonnes of aluminium swarf

• 21.7 tonnes of wood

• 1.6 tonnes of WE’EE and metal

But beyond the statistics, there’s also a more subtle attitudinal shift happening. In taking a greener attitude as a business, and making it a focal point of day-to-day operations, this is having a positive impact upon Window Widgets’ employees and how they go about their work and home lives, says the company.

Jade Nelson is Window Widgets customer service manager and sustainability is a part of her day-to-day work. She said: “We are continually looking at ways we can improve our efficiency and sustainability. By carefully planning our delivery days, driver hours and vehicle loads it means we can optimise space and stay as economical as possible.

“I think about sustainability all the time and try my best to keep my carbon footprint to a minimum. The way I see it, each time we choose to put some rubbish into the recycling bin as opposed to a normal bin, each time we remember to pick up our reusable water bottle rather than picking one up at the shop or even using a Tupperware container rather than wrapping our lunch in cling film, we make

a difference.”

Window Widgets’ sales manager Sally Gingell is similarly environmentally conscious due to her consistent travel for work. She commented: “I plan my visits with customers accordingly, with a hybrid car I need to ensure I’m optimising my travel time and mileage. We have systems in place that can help plan this.

“We have an excellent recycling initiative at Window Widgets too. Ensuring we recycle our PVC and then use it in the production of many of our Window Widgets’ range.

“We’re also really keen to encourage our customers to improve their sustainability measures too. They could do this with reusable packaging, well planned deliveries, and offering their own recycling scheme for example.”

In the words of Andy Taylor, group QSHE manager at Window Widgets: “Sustainable practices not only benefit our planet but also contribute to a more responsible and resilient business and we look forward to continuing our hard work for a more sustainable future.”

Leads 2 Trade Reports A 38% Rise In Inquiries For Single Composite Doors

The UK’s provider of double qualified sales leads for installers in the home improvement industry saw a big increase in single composite door leads at the start of 2024 – and it is showing no signs of slowing down, according to the company.

Leads 2 Trade experienced a 38% increase in composite doors/single door lead volumes in January 2024 compared to January 2023.

Andy Royle, co-founder and director of Leads2Trade, puts the rise down to homeowners wanting to increase the energy efficiency of their home and the strengthening of Leads 2 Trade’s digital marketing team.

“Alongside windows, front and back doors are the biggest source of heat loss in a home,” said Andy, “and homeowners are looking at replacing their old and worn external doors with

high performance thermally efficient doors to reduce draughts, keep their home warmer and cut heating bills.

“Many of our installer members want big ticket items or multiple window or door leads, but we are getting a huge number of enquiries for single front/ back composite doors and consumers looking for specific door companies. And, of course, the chance is also there for installers to potentially upsell.”

“The strengthening of our digital marketing team has also played a significant part in this increase, and we are looking forward to increasing our single composite door lead volumes, matching homeowners with the right installers from our member network and providing our customers with the leads they want.”

Epwin Window Systems Stepping Up

Its Commitment to Sustainability

Epwin Window Systems says it is demonstrating its ongoing commitment to prioritising sustainability in a series of initiatives that promotes ecofriendly practices throughout its operation and supply chain.

Ray McGrady, commercial director at Epwin Window Systems, says: “Here at Epwin Window Systems we understand the moral and commercial imperatives of sustainability. It’s reflected in everything from our smallest actions to our

strategic business decisions and investments – and it has been for many years.”

Epwin Window Systems has had a clear sustainability focus for many years. According to the company, it has recycled waste bar length into RCM (recycled composite material) as part of its manufacturing process since 2009 and in 2018 it was the first UK systems house to achieve the VinylPlus Product Label.

To support the reduction of the

built environment’s operational emissions, Epwin Window Systems says it offers the widest portfolio of fully integrated thermally-efficient window and door systems. Ray comments: “Our systems help fabricators and installers to deliver the thermally efficient solutions the market – and the world – needs.”

The company is stepping up its commitments too.

In 2022, it acquired Poly-Pure, a leading UK materials reprocessor that recycles postconsumer and post-industrial PVC building materials, including PVC-U window frames.

It recently introduced a new 150mm cill incorporating a coextruded recycled section to the base. This year, it will introduce multiple new mainframe tools that will incorporate a recycled core that won’t be visible when manufactured.

Also coming soon is an ambitious recycling programme that will see customers being offered a collection service for PVC-U frames and factory offcuts which will be taken to new regional recycling hubs.

Ray comments: “The recycling programme marks a stepchange for the industry and it’s something that only a company with the size and scale of Epwin Window Systems could take the lead on.”

He concludes: “As our past, present and future initiatives show, Epwin Window Systems understands the critical importance of sustainability and actively takes the lead on advancing it. Our approach is the responsible way to play our part on the road to net zero – and delivers valuable commercial advantage to our partners at the same time.”

In addition to fire resistance testing, the company works with building product and system manufacturers of all kinds to test their performance against thermal, water and air ingress, security and acoustic standards, as well as CWCT testing.

In order for the facility to satisfy the stringent requirements of UKAS accreditation, the team were required to develop a ‘test

bank’ and gain experience of testing various doors, windows and glazing assemblies in their new environment ahead of taking on client projects. Jerry Quayle & Associates approached Promat to support the development process at Attain RTC by providing a timber framed fire resistant door assembly for testing in trial conditions.

The brief from Promat for this particular exercise was to test the door assembly, which already held a 30-minute accreditation to BS476 part 22, to new criteria that would upgrade its certification to EN1364-1, the standard relating to fire resistance of nonloadbearing walls, and EN16341, which is used to determine the suitability of materials used in doors.

The process involved Promat providing a complete design for the door assembly, which then required build-up and installation within the furnace in accordance with the technical guidance. This was completed by Rated Solutions, one of Promat’s approved fire glass installers who are regularly involved in installing fire resistant glazing elements in buildings across the UK using the Promat Systemglas range. On completion of the test, Attain RTC then issued the report confirming the assembly’s performance.

Attain RTC’s testing was successful both in terms of the way the test was conducted by their team and how the Promat timber frame fire door performed, ensuring that it meets the more demanding requirements of both European standards.

Chris Davey, Attain RTC’s general manager, commented: “Promat UK’s support, coupled with the installation expertise

of Rated Solutions, was extremely valuable to our team on our journey to securing our UKAS accreditation. Whilst we have a highly knowledgeable and experienced team here at Attain RTC, being able to utilise additional technical insights from one of the passive fire protection sector’s most trusted manufacturers was really beneficial, helping us to shape our provision of our fire

resistance testing services to the highest standards.”

Fodos Joannides “Joe”, director of Rated Solutions, who were recently announced as the Promat Systemglas Installer of the Year Award winner, added: “We were delighted to be involved with this project and help Attain RTC secure their accreditation. Their fire testing facilities

Thermoseal Group Invests In New Recycling Plant

Thermoseal Group has invested in a new recycling plant that will reduce the amount of manufacturing waste going to landfill, according to the company.

Situated at the company’s Wigan factory, the recycling plant can handle all lengths of Thermobar warm edge, turning them back into pellets that can be reused in the manufacturing process.

“We have always been able to recycle the core material of Thermobar – polypropylene – but if it had the barrier tape attached, it would have to go to landfill,” sales director Mark Hickox said.

“Our new recycling equipment can remove the backing tape from the finished Thermobar, which means that any waste created during the extrusion setup process can now be shredded and reused.

“We can add up to 20% of the normal compound without

any loss of performance, and it means that we send zero plastic waste in all the Thermobar production.

“Plus, the plant is also powered by a Solar PV System that we installed last year, so we are minimising our emissions in the process.”

This new investment forms part of the company’s ongoing sustainability strategy.

are excellent, and they will become an important asset to the construction industry, particularly given the heightened demand for products and systems to demonstrate their fire resistance through primary testing under the new building safety regime.”

Find out more about the Promat range of fire resistant glass and glazing systems

In 2023, new automated production lines reduced energy usage in Thermobar’s manufacture by almost 40%, and the company is expanding its steel stillage scheme, where Thermobar is delivered to customers without the need for cardboard packaging, according to the company.

Also, the company’s Thermoflex flexible spacer bar is supplied coiled onto plastic reels, in a plastic bag, inside a cardboard box. To prevent this packaging from being scrapped, the company has developed a system where, similar to Thermobar’s metal stillages, the packaging is collected and reused.

This unique packaging method has successfully diverted 80% of packaging away from landfill and has kept the price point of Thermoflex lower for customers.

“We manufacture over 50 million metres of spacer bar a year,” Mark said. “Imagine how much packaging is required for that amount of product. But with our recycling processes, we significantly cut the amount of packaging that we use, and we use everything until its lifespan is completely over, limiting the amount of waste we’re sending to landfill.”

New DoorCo Door Coming Soon

Following their recent announcement of a new manufacturing and research facility in Doncaster, DoorCo reveals the first innovation out of the doors will be a new timber core composite door.

Mark Towers, DoorCo’s head of operations explains more:

“The new Doncaster facility is something I have been working on in the background for many months – not only setting up the new home of DoorCo Manufacturing and Innovation, which is the fourth standalone site in the UK, but also designing a new door slab. It’s really exciting to finally be able to share what we’ve been up to with the market.

“In addition to our two current door brands – Original and Gripcore – we recognised there was an obvious opening for the

addition of a new product that is accessible for the whole market. Deciding to make this product in the UK in Doncaster was a natural choice as it enables us to have total control of the development process and future manufacturing.

“The new door’s construction is a timber core finished

with Thermoplastic CoolSkin technology. As with all DoorCo slabs, the new door will be made to fit any profile on the market, making it a versatile solution for our network.

“The new slab will be available in existing styles including 6/4 combi, flush, farmhouse, as well as two new exclusive designs just for this range, which means it can create all the favourite DoorCo designs, and more. The product will be made in Doncaster and prepped, if required, in Macclesfield and distributed along our normal supply routes. The product collection will also come in over 15 standard colours.

“Doncaster represents a sizable investment in infrastructure, team and machinery for DoorCo, but we’ve created a new home dedicated to DoorCo Manufacturing to support our overseas partners in the production of our growing composite door portfolio. We’ve also made a space for R&D that gives us greater flexibility to create, test and trial more products, right here in the UK.

“Innovation is something DoorCo is renowned for, and something we are fully committed to doing more of. This commitment was recently highlighted by our ‘Most Innovative Business’ win at the UK Manufacturing Awards. The award recognises our work on the recent Innovation Week marketing campaign which saw us launch over 10 new products and supply chain updates in just 5 days.

Engineering and creativity are qualities we pride ourselves on, so to have been awarded this title is a real badge of honour for us and sets a great benchmark for 2024 and our Doncaster plans.

“We’re in the final stages of bringing our new door to market now and it is due to go into full production very soon.

Avoiding Disputes On Poor Acoustic Performance With Pulse Testing

RISA has highlighted the benefits of pulse testing for window installations in properties where improved acoustic performance is the primary objective, but where customers are actually reporting worse noise levels, post installation, due to the specification of trickle vents.

RISA offers its pulse testing service to all installers. It was introduced following the update to Approved Document F for ventilation and indoor air quality, legislation that typically requires the use of trickle vents to be incorporated into new windows and doors.

Pulse testing, however, is designed to demonstrate the airtightness of a building pre and post installation, and in many cases when the reading doesn’t change, it provides installers with certified evidence to prove there is actually no requirement for additional trickle vents.

For installation projects on buildings that are located close to busy roads or under flight paths, where customers are paying for a high-quality solution to reduce the amount of noise into their property, pulse testing provides a valuable alternative route to compliance by significantly

reducing the chance of customer disputes.

Lee Galley, independent inspection and assessment manager for RISA, said: “We’ve had a spate of inspection requests recently for installations where noise infiltration is the main cause of the dispute.

“These have primarily been for projects where improved acoustic performance was the main reason for purchasing new windows, and where the specification includes acoustic rated glass, but the homeowner is adamant that noise levels are worse compared to the old windows.

“In most cases, this is because trickle vents have also been included in the specification,” he continued. “Installers should be commended for doing their best to follow the regulations, but they should also be made aware that trickle vents are not always necessary and in fact can result in

TRADE NEWS 24 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

disappointed customers who are paying a premium for a quieter and more comfortable home.

“There is an additional cost involved in pulse testing, but we would suggest it’s easily justified under such circumstances, especially when installers will ultimately benefit from positive customer feedback, as well as avoiding the costly time and hassle of resolving harmful disputes.”

Pulse testing takes less than half an hour to complete and the results are available immediately. The technology is quick and easy to use and can be done so with people in the property, allowing for a convenient addition to the installation process.

The service is available nationwide and bookings can be made at risaltd.co.uk/pulse-testing-tricklevents/ . GGF and FENSA members can also benefit from discounted rates for the service.

Anglo Unveils

‘The UK’s Most Advanced’ Steel Roll-Forming Line

Steel reinforcement and profile roll-forming specialist Anglo, has invested more than £1million in what the company claims is the UK’s most advanced roll-forming line.

Delivered as part of a multi-millionpound investment programme, the new double-sided CNC line features 24 passes, making more and smaller adjustments to profile angles in manufacture, reducing stress on the steel, and improving product quality, says Anglo.

Introducing increased precision in manufacture, it also allows Anglo to manufacture far more complex profile shapes.

The line also rolls directly from the coil, punching and cutting ‘onthe-fly’ as part of a continuous process, delivering significant efficiency gains, while CNC control, brings increased precision to manufacture.

Operating from a two-acre site in Newton Heath, Manchester, Anglo was founded in 1989 as a specialist supplier of rolled steel reinforcements.

Since, it has supplied more than 250 million metres of steel reinforcement – enough to stretch around the equator more than six times.

This includes its cut-to-size service, which eliminates the complexity and labour required to handle full bar lengths, while also significantly reducing waste.

Putting a deal in place with leading venture capitalists Octopus to fund growth in 2015, the company has gone through a major restructure, ending in acquisition by the Amari Metals Engineering Group in 2021, acquisition triggering another multimillion phase of investment.

Made To Measure by Force 8

Specifying an arched frame can be daunting, especially when it comes to determining the radius measurements. A single incorrect dimension in the wrong place could lead to a costly mistake, resulting in an arched frame that doesn’t fit—a nightmare for installers.

Such a scenario might prompt installers to decline work or seek assistance from a more experienced installation company, potentially losing out on additional work and profit.

Force 8 says it offers a straightforward solution: they will handle the measurements for you on the first order and demonstrate how to specify an arched, curved, or unconventional shape frame simultaneously.

First-time customers who are uncertain about the process can benefit from the assistance of an

experienced Force 8 technician for their initial arched frame order, regardless of their location. “We can guide them through the measurement process, ensure accurate dimensions, assist with completing and processing the order, and provide helpful advice,” comments Lisa Mottershead, operations director at Force 8.

“We are constantly seeking ways to enhance our customer service, and while this may seem like a simple idea, we believe it will resonate with many customers and demystify the process. It’s a practical solution for a common problem, which is what we are all about here at Force 8”

The company has been at the forefront of profile bending for over 35 years, transforming the process into an art form. They remain one of the few PVCu bending companies capable of bending a full length of profile, resulting in what the company claims is a superior finish without breaks or weld marks.

This achievement is attributed to their use of a hot oil method, rather than the conventional hot air system, which although more challenging, yields a seamless arched frame that is aesthetically pleasing, and which is particularly evident with a foiled finish, plus Force 8 says it’s structurally stronger. To see this process, visit the company’s website at www.force8.

uk where you can view a video showing the whole process.

Over the past three decades, Force 8 has concentrated on two main profile selections: Veka and Halo. Their focus on Veka profiles is said by the company to be driven by its versatility, offering a diverse range of sections suitable for bending profiles for different window or door installations.

By specializing in Veka and Halo profiles, Force 8 has been able to streamline their operations. They’ve made investments in cutting-edge software, stateof-the-art CNC machinery, and a precision milling machine dedicated solely to Veka.

Force 8 founder Dennis Sumner emphasises: “Achieving our level of quality bending would be unattainable if we were bending multiple profiles and constantly changing settings, tooling, formers, and software. We prefer to be true masters of our craft, rather than jacks of all trades. This approach also enables us to maintain an extensive inventory of Veka and Halo profiles, ensuring a consistent availability of a wide array of sections, which would be nearly impossible with multiple profile brands and sections.”

Garnalex Named One Of The Top Ten Fastest Growing Companies In The UK

Garnalex is celebrating after the company was named the ninth fastest growing company in the UK according to the ORESA Growth Index 2024. The coveted index champions innovation, economic growth, and the inspirational business leaders behind the featured companies.

Not only is it impressive to make the index, which only features the top 100 companies in the UK, but for Garnalex to enter the list for the first time in ninth place with a 171.07 per cent compound annual growth rate

is a testament to the leadership team.

In addition, while there were nine companies on the list from the East Midlands last year, there are only six this year. When considering the timeframe includes the covid and postcovid recovery years, which saw many businesses struggling, it’s even more impressive.

One of the key trends from this year’s findings highlight the rise of sustainable businesses and initiatives. Garnalex prides itself

The Business Pilot Barometer

Are the brakes being applied?

The figures for April support what most people are experiencing: volume is down. But they also give an indication of what is to come, which isn’t negative – if you are prepared.

At a headline level, average sales are down 10.1% in April, when compared to March 2024, to 55.8, and average leads are down 2.1% to 115.9.

This fall in volume affects those businesses that are geared predominantly to service that part of the market, and the collapse of Everest is a chilling reminder that fluctuations in demand can have a large knock-on effect on businesses up and down the supply chain.

The window industry is, by its very nature, reactive, and it is easy to judge the state of the market by a rolling three-month average. So, it is worth remembering that sales are actually up 23.7% when compared to the same time last year, and leads are up by 20.7%, which proves that we started from a stronger starting point in 2024 than in 2023.

VIEWPOINT 34 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

This is also supported by other metrics that we pull from the Barometer data. For example, if you take the average order value into account (up 2.1% to £3,513 when compared to March 2024) and the conversion rate (up marginally to 41.7% in the same period) and then the outlook for the summer doesn’t seem quite so bleak. These figures suggest that the homeowners who are spending are those looking for higher value products, and are researching the market with the intention of buying.

The widespread assumption is that, thanks to the current cost-of-living crisis, households don’t have the available budget to invest in home improvements. If this were the case, I would expect to see average leads and average sales down much further. As they stand, they are higher than a year ago, and people are researching the market with the intention of buying.

What I do see is hesitation. Confidence among homeowners is low, which I put down to the high cost of borrowing. Inflation is certainly approaching the government’s target figure of 2%, but the Bank of England has been very vocal about waiting until the autumn (according to the latest reports) before lowering the interest rate.

This is reflected in the sluggish housing market. Why commit to a mortgage today, at historically high rates, when it could be much cheaper in six months’ time?

We are not in recession, but it does feel as though the brakes are being applied. And let’s not ignore the elephant in the room: what will happen after the next election?

Maybe we should be looking at beyond the general election, and preparing our businesses for a possible surge in demand when confidence returns?

Using Business Pilot efficiently can help you track each individual lead and monitor sales trends. This will allow you to position your business so it can capitalise on that increased demand when it does arrive.

The Forecast Is Improving

There’s no escaping the fact that it’s been a difficult start to the year for many. Economic conditions are tough – we’re told that the UK was technically in a recession in January; but almost worse than that is the fact that weather conditions have been so tough as well. The knock on effects of builders and installers not being able to get out on site because of the incessant rain are being felt all the way along the supply chain.

Sadly, we’re also now seeing signs of the usual race to the bottom on price – particularly on aluminium bifolds – which seems to characterise any kind of downturn in the UK fenestration market in a way that just doesn’t seem to happen in mainland Europe. With casualties already rising amongst retail and commercial facing businesses as margins

are squeezed, it doesn’t take a huge amount of insight to recognise that this is a dangerous strategy.

Surviving and thriving in this market is not just about having deep enough pockets to literally ‘weather the storm’ though, it’s about having a long term sales and customer support strategy which is about so much more than just price.

I’m pleased to be able to report that AluK is in a really good position now to be able to help our customers navigate the market if it stays in the doldrums for a while, or if the gloom finally lifts and we see all that pent up demand being released.

Since my return, we’ve been looking at ways to deliver better value so that customers can keep their hard earned margins intact. That’s everything from new single, standard and bulk buying discounts which reduce up-front costs, to faster lead

times on our Elements ‘made to order’ single colours to speed up orders and make it quicker to convert an order into cash.

We’ve also reviewed hardware and handle options on our biggest selling products such as the BSF70 HI to offer a wider range at different price points so that customers can tailor their offering to suit themselves. And of course, we’ve just launched the Quik Clip clip-in bead system which saves fabricators and installers valuable time on every product they fit. It’s already available on the BSF70 HI and is also now an option on our brand new, class leading S140 Lift and Slide patio.

The S140 Lift and Slide patio is part of our ongoing mission to give customers the products they need to successfully target the higher end of the market where demand and margins are still more robust.

It has the slim sightlines and flush sash aesthetic which retail buyers love, coupled with impressively low U-Values. These are achieved using CEN sizes as well, rather than the slightly misleading extreme sizes used by some of our competitors in this market. This is a door which ticks every box for fabricators and installers looking to get a bigger slice of the premium market – it’s easy to manufacture and, thanks to the addition of Quik Clip system, incredibly quick to glaze.

I can assure all our customers that AluK is in this market for the long run. We obviously have strong financial backing as part of a global group, but we can also offer the kind of operational stability and reliable service that customers need to withstand whatever the future economic and weather conditions turn out to be.

Are We Turning A Corner?

The start of this year has delivered exactly what we expected it to – a relatively lack lustre market in the face of still high, if falling inflation, and a stuttering new build sector.

That’s contributed to a consensus that the market is probably down around 10 to 16%. That’s far from catastrophic but for those companies that haven’t invested and are perhaps overly reliant on labour, it’s created a definite pressure – and ultimately, vulnerability.

We’ve sustained volumes through a combination of customer growth and customer acquisition. We

aren’t, however, immune from wider market trends.

Positively, there are signs that things may be about to improve. House prices in March saw the highest rate of annual inflation for 12-months at 1.7% (Rightmove).

The average asking price was also up 1.1% to £372,324. That’s only £570 short of the record seen in May 2023. The number of sales was also up 13%.

The construction industry has also returned to growth. The latest purchasing managers index compiled by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply recorded a rise to 50.2 from 49.7 last month. This pushed it above

the 50-point mark that separates growth from contraction for the first time since August.

Residential housebuilding also strengthened at its quickest pace since November 2022 in the expectation of cuts in the base rate and continuing falls in inflation this year.

As we move forward towards the second half of this year for my money the challenges are less about demand, which I believe we will see increase, more about the cost of raw materials and labour.

VIEWPOINT 38 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

We’ve worked to manage those pressures. We’ve restructured our operations, opening a second manufacturing operation to a new dedicated facility for our door lines; and the space to optimise our precore manufacturing facility.

That includes the addition of two new Stuga sawing and machining centres, building on the capacity of our three pre-existing Schirmers and a pre-existing Stuga.

That provides a foundation for sustainable and manageable growth in the second half of this year – and most importantly drives up product quality.

Get the cuts and routs absolutely right, and everything flows better through the factory and ultimately works better for the end-user, further improving product quality.

While representing a substantial up-front investment, it also allows us to automate more process, supporting us in controlling overhead, and ensuring that we remain competitive – but also sustainable.

We have brought new agility to the way that we deliver products to our customers. This includes setting new expectations of customer service and support with twohour delivery slots and 20-minute notifications on arrivals.

We have new product lines in development, which we will announce shortly.

We haven’t stood still because neither has the market. We have built and continue to invest for the future.

We are committed to innovating, introducing new products which support our customers in winning more business and in our service and support offer, so that they can maximise the opportunities that I am confident are on the horizon.

Get In Front Of The Market Slowdown, Says Leads 2 Trade

Andy Royle, co-founder and managing director of Leads 2 Trade, provider of double qualified sales leads for installers in the home improvement industry, says that installers can secure additional leads despite the tougher market.

Let’s be honest, the home improvement industry has never been immune to market fluctuations. I’m sure we can all pinpoint the months or seasons historically when things quieten down during the year.

After the feast of the last few years however, the market started to cool towards the back end of 2023 and that has continued during the first quarter of 2024. And this can be unsettling, especially for installers who’ve become accustomed to a steady stream of leads.

But a slowdown doesn’t have to spell disaster for your business

and proactively topping up your lead volume is a wise move to maintain momentum. A consistent pipeline of leads allows you to keep your sales team busy and maintain a healthy conversion rate.

Even with a slowdown, there will still be homeowners looking for home improvement projects and our consumer facing websites are still generating a huge number of enquiries customers looking for installers. Your competitors won’t be taking a break, so it’s crucial, to stay visible and ensure you’re capturing your share of those inquiries.

A market slowdown doesn’t have to be a setback and by securing additional leads now, installers will be well-positioned to capitalise when the market rebounds – after all, it won’t stay quiet forever.

Weathering The Rain!

None of us needs the Met Office to tell us it’s been raining – a lot! They have just reported though that, thanks largely to the position of the jet stream, the winter of 2034/24 was the eighth wettest on record in the UK. The south of England had its wettest February since 1836 and England as a whole had its fourth wettest February on record.

Lots of the news coverage has been about the impact this has had on farmers and the likely knock on effects on food stocks and prices, but there has been less coverage on the impact on our industry – even though it’s likely to be significant.

Wet weather inevitably causes delays to both new build and refurb work that have an impact all the way down the supply chain. The fact is that if installers can’t get out on site, they’re not completing jobs and moving onto new ones, which means they’re not getting paid and not placing new orders.

Sioned Yates from Whitesales pictures with the company’s em.glaze rooflight

We’re hearing reports from customers that they are up to two months behind on some projects which obviously causes cash flow issues for them, but does it also mean we could see a surge in orders later in the year as businesses desperately try to catch up? And is the supply chain ready for that? After months of soggy sales as the whole industry has waded through water, could we actually be looking at a COVID type home improvement boom in the summer?

I’m pleased to be able to report that Whitesales is fully prepared either way. When it comes to rooflights, our products can help installers who are battling wet weather to reduce their time on site.

If you choose one of our from 3 days to site stock lanterns, you’ll get the glass and frame delivered together and you can assemble it on site in around 40 minutes. Our flat rooflights are supplied as a complete aluminium frame, factory pre-glazed and ready to fit. And, if you opt for one of our pre-fabricated timber kerbs as well, you can achieve a fast, water-tight and compliant install in no time – with no worry about having to construct your own builder’s kerb on site in the rain.

Our best advice is to order stock rooflights where possible – we offer 18 sizes from 600 x 600 right up

VIEWPOINT 40 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

to 1600 x 3100 so there’s plenty of choice. Not only are these cheaper than bespoke rooflights, but we can hold any orders at our warehouse and deliver direct to site as soon as there’s a break in the weather. If you order first and then cut the hole when you know there’s no rain forecast, you can simply call off the stock item that’s been reserved for you and have it delivered direct to site the next day.

And of course, if anything goes wrong with a stock item on site – say a piece of glass gets broken, then we can supply a replacement component the next day.

There are encouraging signs at last that the market is starting to pick up pace. Because we have control of our manufacturing at our own factory, Whitesales is in a great position to be able to respond. We always hold plenty of stock anyway but, if and when, the surge does come, we can increase output within days and make sure our customers don’t miss out on a single installation.

How Aluprof Systems

Help Specifiers Meet the Climate

Emergency Design Guide

Formed in 2017, the London Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI) was established to review what our capital’s future construction should look like to meet our low-carbon future.

Released back in 2020, the Climate Emergency Design Guide has gained extensive support from architects, developers, and professionals in the built environment throughout the UK. It has been downloaded more than 60,000 times in over 100 countries,

VIEWPOINT 42 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024
Wojciech Brozyna

and its requirements are acknowledged and adhered to by building professionals across the UK. With LETI’s growing influence across the UK, the team behind LETI renamed their network as the ‘Low Energy Transformation Initiative’.

In the UK 49% of annual carbon emissions are attributable to buildings and, with increased cost of energy, there continues to be a great deal of concern as to how people and businesses can continue to heat and power their homes and offices in the

future. Whilst the cost of energy has recently stabilised, it will inevitably remain a large part of a future household budget. As the government softens its move away from fossil fuels and legislation in the form of a weakened Document L proposal for 2025, it seems that specifiers in the UK are taking the lead in our transition to a zero carbon future.

In the past our building professionals have been trying to educate property owners why investing in thermally efficient construction is cost effective, but, with relatively low energy costs, the increase in construction costs has often lead to schemes being cut back in preference to profit. With the understanding of commercial building rating schemes such as BREEAM and LEED it has been proven to businesses that the investment does indeed save costs and demonstrates a business’s commitment to helping save the environment. The same can be said for residential development where homeowners are beginning to realise that a low-carbon, or Passivhaus constructed home offers some form of future proofing and is a good investment. A huge amount has been learned by building professionals over the past twenty or more years on how to design, build and successfully operate these zero carbon buildings.

Aluprof UK are committed to offering specifiers in the UK the very best systems and design support to ensure that specified aluminium fenestration is not only correct for its application, but designed into the fabric of a building to maximise interface insulation. A poorly installed high thermal performance window will lose much of its insulation properties, especially when used in a refurbishment situation unless the building

interfaces are redesigned to eliminate cold bridging. Whilst LETI are targeting that all buildings built from 2030 onwards will be of a zero carbon construction, there is a vast swathe of existing buildings across the UK that we need to bring up to zero carbon by 2050 if we are to meet our climate goals.

Aluprof recognises the importance of addressing both embodied carbon and carbon in use within their product ranges. While many manufacturers focus on reducing the carbon content during manufacture, Aluprof goes further by offering Passivhaus-certified, thermally efficient systems. These systems not only reduce embodied carbon but also continue to save carbon once buildings are completed and inhabited, thereby addressing both aspects of carbon reduction.

High thermal performance systems from Aluprof include the MB-104 SI (Passivhaus Certified) windows and door system and the MB-SR50N HI+ (Passivhaus Certified) curtain walling system. The Greenhaus project, recently completed in Salford is a Passivhaus residential construction which uses Aluprof’s MB-104 PASSIV SI windows and MB-TT50 curtain wall. The project was designed by Buttress Architects and completed by Eric Wright Construction.

The European group have long been recognised for providing Passivhaus certified products with Aluprof UK being active members of the UK’s Passivhaus Trust. Support using these systems is freely available to specifiers and includes design advice and modelling of installations to gain the very best building performance.

Building the BP Community at Glass Conference

Business Pilot’s MD Elton Boocock explains why he was the first to pick up the phone when the FIT Show, FENSA and GGF announced their new Glass Conference in October.

I had barely touched down back in the UK after visiting the Fensterbau exhibition in Nuremburg when news broke of the new Glass Conference organised by some of the industry’s leading organisations –FIT Show, GGF and FENSA.

I knew that Business Pilot needed to be involved, and within half a day of the announcement we had agreed to a top sponsorship spot – sometimes you must act on instinct.

We already know that conferences are ideal places to discuss challenges facing

the industry, discover new opportunities, and network with key players across the sector. The trade press were also very quick to get behind the Glass Conference, a move that often precedes successful events.

Most importantly for us, Glass Conference will – via FENSA –appeal to installers, who are the people who use Business Pilot. The agenda at Glass Conference will offer advice and information that will benefit them.

We already partner with FENSA and our API allows installers to register their installations from within Business Pilot in a matter of seconds with just a few clicks. There is no need to re-enter any details, which reduces errors, saves time, improves profitability, and does wonders for customer relations.

Our Innovation Roundtables in conjunction with VBH GB Ltd are another great example of getting key players together to advance the industry.

As a result of initiatives like these, we have a growing group of installers who share ideas and best practice with each other – we call it the BP Community. Glass Conference fits very comfortably with our brand, and we know that our association will also benefit the event and its organisers.

Our relationship with the FIT Show is a hallowed one. We launched Business Pilot at the exhibition in 2019 and have benchmarked our success alongside each iteration ever since. Supporting their conference is quite simply for us, a no brainer.

Business Pilot is an active supporter of industry events, especially those that bring people together to network and offer new opportunities. Glass Conference promises to offer a unique mix of networking, professionalism, and education that fills our criteria and more! We can’t wait to see everyone at Telford in October.

Technical Support Outweighs Price Of Glass, Says Glass Express Midlands

The price of glass is becoming less important to specifiers when they approach glass suppliers for product information, according to Birmingham-based Glass Express Midlands.

“The Building Regulations affecting the specification of glass are being updated all the time,” Glass Express Midlands’ technical manager Kirsty Fortnam said. “U-values, security, acoustics, solar control – understanding each of these elements is vital for companies specifying the right kind of glass into their projects.

“As a result, we get a lot of

calls and emails from specifiers requesting technical information to help them meet their obligations. We also find that they are less interested in the final price of our products.”

Glass Express Midlands has built a strong reputation for its technical knowledge, alongside a comprehensive product range including oversize units, and unique colours and finishes. Its highly experienced technical team is on hand to provide all the support required to ensure the right products are specified for the right projects, and that they are installed correctly. This consulting service means Glass

Express Midlands can offer solutions that its customers may not have known existed, according to the company.

“It’s important to have somebody to rely on that can give you the information, and I think as a glass company we are fairly unique in providing that service,” Kirsty said. “And a lot of people are now more interested in the money they can save by having the right glass – ie, not letting the heat out – than how much it costs up front. And they want to be certain they are meeting the regulations.

Glass Express Midlands operates out of a modern manufacturing facility in Oldbury, in the West Midlands, and has recently invested in a new cutting table for the specialist provision of oversize units to commercial projects. Other processing equipment is currently on order.

VIEWPOINT 46 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

The company also works closely with the main UK manufacturers – as well as some of the bigger European sources – to get access to the latest high-quality products and their significant investment in research and development.

“Another reason we have built

up a strong relationship with customers in the commercial sector is because of our open dialogue with the leading glass companies,” Kirsty said. “This leads to modern new products such as low-e glass, solar control glass, laminated glass, anti-reflective glass, and toughenable mirrored glass.

Tapping Into Trends

Euroglaze has been manufacturing and supplying PVC-U frames to trade customers for more than 45 years. It has seen plenty of trends come and go as fashions have changed in home design and décor and new performance and security standards have come into play.

Like the rest of the market, there was a time in the 80s and 90s when all the PVC-U windows Euroglaze supplied were smooth white, and all the replacement doors were PVC panels. But, over the past 10 years in particular, its window output has been as much about foils and colours as it has about white, and its replacement door output has pivoted largely from PVC to composite.

Euroglaze’s experience obviously tallies with the latest data reported by one of the industry’s online window and door designers and the figures contained within Keystone’s UK Consumer Fenestration Trends report – both of which show just how far the market has come from the ‘any colour you like as long as it’s white’ days.

White does remain the most popular window colour across all regions and demographics in the UK, but the growth in foils and greys shows no sign of abating. Almost half of windows sold are now foiled and, for flush sashes like the Rehau Rio, Liniar flush sash and Liniar Resurgence systems which are all fabricated by Euroglaze, that rises to around 80%. Unsurprisingly, the most popular colours after smooth and foiled white are Agate grey and Anthracite grey, followed by brown, black and then cream and green.

For front doors, white is still preferred by more than a quarter of consumers, but the many grey options are rapidly closing the gap, with black and blue the next most popular but still some way behind. Euroglaze’s order book certainly reflects that trend, with moss grey and pebble grey doors being supplied alongside the established agate and anthracite. There is

“It is important that we are not simply a supplier of glass products, but a source of technical knowledge and a provider of modern solutions. And this is what our customers buy in to.”

glassexpressmidlands.co.uk

also a growing appetite for less conventional colours though and in recent months, Euroglaze has supplied its first composite doors in duck egg blue and candy pink.

Martin Nettleton, Euroglaze’s managing director, had this comment to make: “Clearly, if you’re not adding colours or composite doors to your offering, then you’re missing out on a huge market opportunity, with the potential to target new customers with stronger margins. The Baby Boomers (born from 1948-1964) were probably the first generation to fit PVC-U windows in their homes – driven by promises of lower maintenance, and the Gen X generation (born 19651980) were the ones led the replacement of the replacements as they looked to reduce energy costs. But there’s a whole new generation of buyers out there – in the form of Millennials (born 1981-1996) and even Gen Z (born 1997-2012) for whom windows and doors are much more of a design statement.

“The research shows that female buyers, younger buyers and buyers in the AB demographic are more likely to choose composite than PVC doors, and they are also much more likely to want a bolder colour. Appealing to those buyers is all about giving them something that is uniquely theirs, rather than something which just blends in with the rest of their street.” www.euroglaze.co.uk

Clever Bean Accounting

Introducing the inaugural instalment of a series by Simon Jarman, the visionary founder and CEO of Clever Bean Accounting. In this edition, Simon delves into his rich industry experience and background.

When and how did you first enter the glazing sector?

I remember exactly! In October 1995, I was lucky enough to join Everest as a fresh-faced management accountant. I’ve been looking at windows and doors company’s profit and loss accounts ever since!

What are some of the companies you have worked for in the sector, and in what capacity?

I’ve had the pleasure of working with several great glazing businesses over the years. A significant part of my career was at Everest where I served as

Finance Director and later as CEO from 2001 and 2012. This was a happy, rewarding and fulfilling period, working alongside some exceptional people. It saddens me to see its recent decline and demise.

A position that I feel really kickstarted my career was as Finance Director of CET, Everest’s inhouse glass processing company. It was a relatively small business, but it was my first role with real responsibility and autonomy, and I learned a huge amount from it.

I also had the privilege of working with a private equity firm for a couple of years, assisting them with the post-acquisition integration process of various fabricators.

You’ve also spent time in other industries - what did you learn from these experiences?

Outside of glazing, I ventured into the energy management sector for a few years, where I completed a successful management buy-in and subsequent sale of an energy management business. This experience taught me invaluable lessons in rapid business growth, cash flow management, and implementing scalable structures and processes.

Tell us about your most recent role, prior to launching Clever Bean Accounting

Prior to launching Clever Bean Accounting, I served as CEO of an international branding business supplying graphics to the automotive and aerospace sectors. Management of a diverse customer base across different regions, including the UK, Europe, Middle East, and Africa, provided me with insights into maintaining exceptional product quality and timely delivery, skills equally important in the glazing sector.

FINANCE 48 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

One of the highlights of this role was that it provided me the opportunity to live and work in Cape Town, an incredibly vibrant and culturally diverse city that I completely fell in love with.

When and why did you decide to launch Clever Bean?

The idea of starting my own business had been brewing for several years, and in late 2022, I felt the timing felt right to embark on this journey.

The sense of ownership that comes with running your own business is unparalleled. Every decision made, every success achieved, and even every setback encountered becomes a reflection of your dedication and hard work.

Being able to align your passion with your profession creates an incredible synergy where work feels like a fulfilling pursuit and brings with it a whole new level of motivation. Each day brings opportunities for personal growth, but more importantly, I know I’m making a real difference to others and that creates an immense feeling of satisfaction.

Why did you decide to return to the glazing sector specifically?

It was an easy choice. The glazing sector has always held a special place in my heart. I don’t think there’s anyone in this industry that would disagree with the fact that once you are in, you are in for good!

The unique challenges and opportunities in the industry align well with my knowledge and experience, making it a natural choice to channel my passion and skills towards driving positive change within the industry.

Why did you make the decision to return to finance after being a CEO?

Despite my CEO roles, finance has always been my cornerstone. Returning to finance felt like coming back to my roots. Clever Bean gives me an opportunity to leverage both my financial acumen and general management experience with a view to enhancing business success within the industry.

What type of companies/ clients do you work with at Clever Bean?

At Clever Bean, we cater to a diverse range of clients in the glazing sector, including installers, fabricators, systems houses, trade counters, glass processing companies, and component suppliers. Each client brings unique challenges and requirements, keeping our work dynamic and engaging.

What is Clever Bean’s mission?

While we may not have a specific mission per se, our aim is to make a positive difference in the glazing industry while enjoying the journey. If we can contribute to industry advancement and foster a collaborative and supportive environment, we’ll consider it a resounding success.

How can good accounting and finance practice help businesses in the sector?

Effective financial management is the backbone of any successful business, and glazing companies are no exception.

Unfortunately, all too often, we see them operating without any management information The only regular measure they have of their performance is to check how much cash is in the

bank. That doesn’t work and is a recipe for disaster. It’s crucial for success and growth to regularly monitor business performance.

By providing accurate and timely financial insights, we empower businesses to make informed decisions, optimise performance, identify growth opportunities, and navigate challenges effectively.

Why should installers choose Clever Bean – what’s your USP?

Our specialisation in the glazing industry sets us apart. Our in-depth knowledge and understanding of the unique challenges and requirements of the industry allow us to offer business and finance solutions tailored specifically to the needs of glazing companies, with the aim of maximising their profits and driving sustainable growth.

What is your view on working with installers?

Installers hold a pivotal role in driving the industry’s overall long-term prosperity and

FINANCE WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024 49

FINANCE

sustainability. However, I’m deeply concerned about the widespread lack of strategic direction in many of these businesses.

In particular, the ‘race to the bottom’ as it is so often referred to, relying primarily on low prices for competitive advantage, is inherently risky. It invariably leads to squeezed margins, cashflow constraints, and ultimately business failure. This is evident in the statistics – Insight Data reports 900 insolvencies in the industry in Q1 of 2024 alone.

It’s imperative for installers to shift their focus towards differentiation based on elements beyond pricing. Learning to distinguish themselves based on factors such as quality and service, which enables them to command a higher price, is vital

to the long-term growth and success of the industry.

What’s the best thing about working with glazing companies?

It’s been so incredibly rewarding seeing companies overcome barriers and improve their business performance. One of the nicest things is seeing the sigh of relief when business owners realise they’ve got someone to lean on, to share their challenges with, and who they know is going to help them flourish.

What does a typical day entail for you?

One of the joys of running your own business is variety. No two days are the same. From client meetings and industry events to strategic planning and

operational tasks, each day presents new opportunities and challenges.

What are your interests outside of work?

I like to keep quite active and love skiing and mountain biking. I keep reasonably fit and have been known to do the odd crazy sporting challenge!

Where would you like to see the company in five years time?

If Clever Bean can become an established, trusted, and respected partner to the industry, making a real positive difference, then I will be happy.

Flat’s In Fashion: What’s The Next Big Thing In Rooflights?

Interest online, customer enquiries and sales at daylighting specialist Whitesales all point to the fact that it’s flat rooflights which are currently setting the trend in the rooflights market. The company has even put a catwalk built entirely of flat rooflights at the centre of its new ‘Flat’s in Fashion’ marketing campaign to emphasise the shift they are seeing amongst consumers towards the sleek and contemporary flat rooflight and away from the more traditional looking roof lantern .

Figures from the Whitesales website reveal a 133% rise in the number of views of its em.glaze flat rooflight range over the past 12 months, and sales enquiries are currently running at 80/20 in favour

of flat rooflights over lanterns.

Sioned Yates, Whitesales’ marketing director, says it’s largely younger and more affluent customers who are expressing a preference for the clean lines and sleek finish of the em.glaze products: “We’ve seen in the latest round of consumer research from Keystone that younger consumers are more likely to want glazing in the roof, and these seem to be the people driving the current trend.

“No home makeover show or home improvement magazine is complete at the moment without the inclusion of a flat rooflight, and that’s obviously great news for anyone selling or installing our products.”

Whitesales em.glaze flat rooflight as part of a green roof

Karl Grandfield, Whitesales’ sales manager adds: “This is a trend which has actually been building for the past 4 or our 5 years in the premium end of the market and now we’re seeing it filtering down to the mainstream as well. A flat rooflight gives a property a minimalist, contemporary look which lots of buyers love. And there’s the big advantage of course that a flat rooflight doesn’t interfere with the view from bedrooms above – and that’s definitely a factor for buyers in smaller homes.”

Whitesales’ customer Will Bull from Rooflights and Atriums agrees that demand is increasing for flat glass: “Whilst contemporary roof lanterns still remain a popular choice in some applications, Rooflights & Atriums Ltd have seen increased demand in 2024 for flat glass from people wanting a more modern feel for their space. Flat glass generally offers more choice with glass specification, options to suit

ROOFS & ROOFLIGHTS 56 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

all budgets, better security and the potential to captivate the popular architectural vision of having huge single panes of glass. The ‘flat glass’ solution remains as popular as ever.”

Sioned adds: “If you need any more evidence of the trend, you only have to look at the number of new suppliers trying to get into the flat roof market. When companies who have made their name manufacturing lanterns start developing and marketing flat rooflights, you know that flat’s definitely in fashion.”

Karl Grandfield is keen to point out that, for installers, flat rooflights are actually an easier and lower risk proposition than lanterns. He explains: “Products like our em.glaze flat glass rooflights are supplied pre-glazed, so there’s no on site assembly required. All that fitters have to do is fix the rooflight to the upstand – which we can also supply. And there’s no chance that they will leak because there are three separate barrier methods in the glazed section, which means

no costly remedials.”

Whitesales is helping customers make the most of the trend towards flat rooflights with the launch of its em.glaze Economy rooflight alongside the existing em.glaze Premium. The Economy version, which can actually work out cheaper than the equivalent sized lantern, features CWCT Class 3 glazing rather than the walk-on CWCT Class 1 glass in Premium,

and aesthetically the only thing that distinguishes the two options is that the Economy is non-fritted.

Whitesales says the em.glaze rooflight range is available in a range of ventilation and glazing options and up to 18 stock sizes delivered to site in just 3-5 days, backed by the full Whitesales sales and service package.

Flat Roof Now Even Faster To Fit, Says Ultraframe

Ultraframe has enhanced its Flat Roof system with the addition of a new rapid rail system, designed to make fitting quicker and easier, according to the company.

The rapid rail system is factory fitted to the Flat Roof perimeter OSB fascia and upstand, meaning there are less parts, fixings and set out requirements, equating to a saving of up to half a day on each installation, along with a simpler install, claims the company.

Commenting on the recent enhancement to the Flat Roof system, Ultraframe product manager for Solid Roofs, Mark Bowler, said: “We are committed

to continually improving our range of products and this change has been introduced based on feedback from installers relating to the fitting of the joist hangers. The rapid rail system not only saves valuable time on site, but also means that the process of installing our Flat Roof is now even simpler.”

The Ultraframe Flat Roof is an extremely versatile system, having been designed for use on conservatories, orangeries or extensions, and is supplied as an integrated solution with lanterns or flat skylights. Available in unlimited widths and projections of up to 5m, the system also provides solutions for free standing garden

homes and compatibility with bungalows and partial walls.

The strength of the Flat Roof means it is strong enough to span up to 5.6m unsupported above bi-fold or sliding doors. Unlimited widths are now also available when supported by a hup! wall, structural post, brick wall or brick pillar.

Concluding, Mark said: “Our Flat Roof system is a true hasslefree solution for many types of projects, with everything taken care of in a single order, and is now even faster and easier thanks to the rapid rail system. Not only is the Flat Roof fast to fit, but it is also fast to project manage thanks to its recently achieved Stroma and Assent Building Regulations approval.”

Heritage Popularity On Increase For CDW Systems

Specialist aluminium fabricator CDW Systems has seen the popularity of its Smart Alitherm Heritage Range increase despite the current market slowdown.

CDW Systems added the modern thermal aluminium range to its offering three years ago due to demand from customers and it is said to have proved a ‘fantastic’ decision.

Specifically developed to meet the requirements of refurbishment renewal projects, particularly in sensitive planning areas, the range is claimed to be ideal for Victorian and Art Deco projects. It has also provided the ideal solution for

many heritage projects across the UK.

Managing director Jeremy Phillips said: “We had a strong start when we initially introduced the Heritage Range, with success in our local Gloucestershire area where there are many older properties in need of refurbishment. That has continued thanks to its slim profiles and sightlines, which are the ideal solution for building renovations as well as new projects.

“The popularity of aluminium domestically combined with the industrial steel look being hugely desirable now is why the Heritage

Range is becoming more and more specified.”

The Alitherm Heritage door and window ranges both feature slim profiles and sightlines that are associated with traditional steel doors and windows for timeless elegance while offering the thermal performance of a modern aluminium system with each delivering a ‘B’ Energy Rating.

The window range, which is security tested to PAS 24:2016 and comes with both Heritage and Art Deco hardware options, is available in several formats, including fixed-pane, top-hung and side-hung casement, pivot, and tilt and turn and these may be installed in a combination of horizontal modules, which are stacked using Smart’s coupling options to form a multi-part window featuring a specially designed drip bar between

WINDOW SYSTEMS 60 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

modules.

CDW Systems recent merger with its sister company, supplier and installer Clearway Doors & Windows, means that the manufacturing of the Heritage Range will move to CDW Systems’ Gloucester headquarters, which will house all production moving forward due to space and the machinery available.

“Moving Heritage, and Smarts AluSpace, which is also becoming more popular, to our Gloucester site will help meet the demand,” added Jeremy. “We still think of both as niche products, but that is becoming less of the case in today’s market. And offering both means we can offer customers the best of both – Heritage for external and AluSpace for internal.”

AluFoldDirect says it is combining ‘unbeatable prices, unparalleled speed and unwavering reliability’ with its latest initiative – Easy Aluminium.

Continuing the trade and commercial fabricator’s core objective to simplify and speed up aluminium projects, Easy Aluminium includes AluFoldDirect’s most competitively priced, thermally efficient BiFold Door. Available at a Building Regulation compliant 1.4 W/m²K U-value from £375 per leaf, AluFoldDirect also guarantees a delivery time of one week unglazed, or two weeks glazed.

The Easy Aluminium range also includes a part assembled Roof Lantern at £595, delivered directto-site two weeks or less. Easy Aluminium products are available in anthracite grey, black and white, with wider options and bespoke colours available on request.

Central to AluFoldDirect’s speed is its 90,000sq/ft state-of-theart manufacturing facility and Aluminium Glazing Design Centre in Blackburn, with more than £1 million worth of stock on site.

“The factory features hightechnology CNC machining centres,” explains commercial director, Rhodri John. “We have moved all prep from the fabrication tables into machining centres so that we get a consistent, quality finished product. Aluplast’s New Flush Window

Aluplast has unveiled its new mechanically joined flush window, which promises to open-up new opportunities for fabricators and installers who are looking to capitalise on the trend for authentic timber window replacements.

The unique mechanical join is the result of a significant period of product development, and it allows fabricators to create a realistic finish without investing in specialist tools or machinery, says the company.

Coupled with the deep bottom rail and woodec (the ‘next generation’ timber-effect foil), the new mechanically joined flush window is claimed to mark a step change in authenticity, and gives homeowners the opportunity to confidently replace timber windows

while benefiting from improved thermal performance and a lifetime of low maintenance.

The window can achieve a WER of A, allowing it to comfortably achieve Building Regulation compliance for refurbishment projects, and is manufactured using ecotech, which maximises the amount of recycled content in a profile’s design, without affecting performance.

“A genuine, easy-to-fabricate mechanically joined window is something of a holy grail in window fabrication,” aluplast’s director of sales and marketing Ian Cocken said. “But, thanks to a unique design that we’ve been working on, we can offer our customers a solution that takes our existing popular flush sash to a new level.

“What’s more, they can achieve this authentic result without investing in specialist machinery or patented designs.”

The flush window can also be coupled with aluplast’s flush door to create a uniform appearance across the whole of the house.

“This sector is still growing considerably, and demand for flush windows and doors remains high,” Cocken said.

“Significantly, our product range allows fabricators to offer the full flush appearance. The flush casement is a modern success story, and its value is appreciated more if a flush appearance can be achieved across the whole elevation – including the doors. We understand this, and we are seeing demand increase rapidly.”

The new mechanically joined flush window and flush door is available now, and will be showcased on aluplast’s large stand at the FIT Show in May 2025.

Sheerline Launches New Woodgrain Foiling Service

Sheerline has announced the launch of a new woodgrain foiling service that introduces an authentic wood effect option across the company’s entire aluminium range of windows and doors, including the popular Prestige lift & slide patio door and Prestige bi-folds.

It’s the ideal option for homeowners who already have wooden or wood-style frames and want a perfectly matched product that offers the hard-wearing, high-

security, and slim profile offered by aluminium, but with a wooden aesthetic.

Partnering with the industry leading supplier of laminated foils, Renolit, Sheerline is offering eight foils from stock, covering the most commonly used colours. All produced at Sheerline’s vertically integrated manufacturing site – customers can have the best of both worlds. Capturing the ‘Scandi look’ inside, and combining it with a hard wearing,

low maintenance architectural aesthetic for the exterior.

Available in just 10-days from order for fabricator customers, this agile service is yet another way that Sheerline says it’s is raising the bar in the world of aluminium. Dual colours and combinations with powder coated finishes are also offered in the same timescale.

A full range of bespoke foils are also available on a slightly extended 15-day lead-time. Ideal for customers looking to differentiate their offering, or to meet an exacting client’s vision for their home.

The new service has been launched in time for Spring/ Summer 24 to reach homeowners who are planning renovations for 2024. The company appreciates the fact

WINDOW SYSTEMS 64 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

that upgrading existing windows and doors is often the quickest ways to change the overall look of a home.

Ross Hartshorn, technical production director, commented: “We recognise the fact that Scandi and wood-effect styling have grown in popularity over the past few years, both from an aesthetic and lifestyle perspective. We want to help homeowners achieve their dream home style while keeping things straightforward for fabricators and installers.”

“The latest innovation from Sheerline very much reflects our ethos of increasing customer choice, but without compromising on the things that are important; in-built security, warm cosy homes, a stylish aesthetic, and sustainability,” they added. www.sheerline.com

Universal Trade Frames Adds New Ultra-Slim VS Meeting Rail

Universal Trade Frames has added a new ultra-slim meeting rail option to its Spectus vertical sliding sash window, adding additional period detailing to its offer.

Available fully Kitemarked and certified to PAS24, the Spectus vertical sliding sash window has an established reputation for faithfully replicating the appearance of traditional sash windows.

Universal Trade Frames has now built on this core offer with the addition of a new meeting rail option, featuring slim sightlines of just 37mm.

Richard Hammond, sales director at Universal Trade Frames, said that combined with a deep bottom rail, classical hardware and a wide choice of colour combinations, the Spectus VS from Universal brought new period authenticity to sliding sash window replacements.

“The Spectus VS has always delivered on period detailing with the authentic ovolo shape to the frame bead, sash and cill and its deep sash mechanically jointed bottom rail”, he said.

“The addition of a very slim meeting rail between sashes is, however, a significant step forward.

“Homeowners choosing vertical sliding sashes are, by definition, focussed on the appearance of their window because they have an interest in its design –or because they have to, to get through planning.

“The slim meeting rail delivers incredible sightlines without compromising on performance or security and gives our customers access to a product that is almost indistinguishable from original timber sashes.”

Designed for timber box sash window replacement, the Spectus VS from Universal Trade Frames features a 128mm front to back depth, simplifying installation.

It can be manufactured to maximum sizes of 1500mm wide by 2800mm high achieving WER A ratings with standard 24mm sealed units without the need for triple-glazing taking weight out of handling.

Integral Blinds

– A Perfect Fit for Holiday Homes

Integral blinds can provide the ideal solution for the UK’s growing number of holiday homes due to the way they can help to maximise comfort and protect properties during unoccupied periods, according to Morley Glass.

The latest industry data from 2023 showed that the holiday rental market in the UK reached a new peak in August with 346,000 listings, of which 280,000 were ‘entire properties’ such as houses, cottages and apartments. It is an increasingly competitive marketplace, which means owners have to work harder than ever to make their holiday let stand out from the crowd and gain those allimportant five star ratings.

But even where a holiday home is not let out to anyone, the last thing many owners want to be doing when they visit for a wellearned break is to have to spend time deep-cleaning or making

repairs. Low maintenance, durable products, therefore, have massive advantages for properties of this type.

Interior features that require virtually no cleaning and are not easily damaged will pay dividends in the long term, especially when they help create visually stunning rooms – exactly as integral blinds manufactured using ScreenLine systems do.

Ian Short, MD of Morley Glass, said: “Anyone who owns a holiday home or lets a property to holidaymakers ‘Airbnb style’ will know how important it is to create a welcoming environment that is aesthetically pleasing, as well as being durable and easy to clean and maintain.

“Interior décor and furnishings will not stay pristine for long, particularly with holiday lets where a high turnover of guests inevitably

results in damage and wear and tear rates far in excess of what we would expect in our permanent homes.

“Well-dressed windows and doors, therefore, make an extremely positive impression in holiday homes. Curtains and traditional blinds may be well-suited to the décor of some properties, but where the goal is to add a wow factor, nothing beats integral blinds – and they can work well in both modern and heritage properties.”

Crucially, because the integral blind is permanently sealed inside an IGU (insulating glass unit), it will never become dirty or attract moisture or dust. The only parts of the blind that will ever need cleaning are the devices used to operate it – that could be a cord winder, a remote control, a switch or a magnetic slider. Even then, these will only require a quick wipe over as part of routine cleaning.

The only way the main integral blind unit can become damaged is if the IGU is smashed in a high impact accident or deliberate

attack. The control system is mounted onto the window or door glass and designed to be highly durable, but should it ever become damaged, it is easy to repair using ScreenLine parts readily available in as little as 24 hours from Morley Glass.

All five control systems offered by Morley Glass as part of the Uni-Blinds range of integral blinds can be used in holiday homes to great effect. From the simple but elegant corded integral blind, the C System, to the smart-home compatible motorised MB System and solar powered W Smart, the range includes options to suit virtually every type of window or door and budget.

According to Morley Glass, The control system that provides the optimum solution for holiday homes is perhaps the SV System, the best-selling Uni-Blinds integral blind. This is a Venetian integral blind that is controlled by a magnetic slider mounted onto the face of the glass – no cords, no requirement for an electrical connection and very easy to raise, lower and tilt the slats.

Pleated Uni-Blinds are also available, offering a softer appearance and diffusion of light that may be more compatible with certain interior décor. These are also available with a magnetic slider control device, this time positioned on the base rail of the blind, called the S System.

Ian Short added: “Whichever control system is chosen, integral blinds can represent an excellent investment for any holiday home. Not only do they contribute to excellent aesthetics, but they are more durable than other shading and privacy options and need almost no cleaning – all these things have a value to boost letting potential or simply to ensure the home is the perfect place to holiday.” morleyglass.co.uk

The Finishing Touch For Agate Grey And Black Windows And Doors

The latest Venetian integral blind colours which have been developed to respond to changing home décor trends offer important sales potential according to Ian Short, MD of Uni-Blinds integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass.

Ian says, “White window and door frames may continue to dominate sales in the UK, but the new kids on the block are undoubtedly agate grey and black.”

This is reflected in sales of UniBlinds integral blind units, which are now available in both these colours within the Venetian range. Despite white and anthracite continuing to take the lion’s share of our sales, there is a noticeable shift to other colours as homeowners and architects experiment with different approaches to the look of their windows and doors.

Ian continues, “Innovation by profile manufacturers has provided end-users with easy access to high quality, visually appealing uPVC and aluminium systems which are gradually shifting the perception that frames should be white. The anthracite boom has certainly turbocharged this shift, which means it accounts for an estimated 10% of all uPVC windows installed, and the colour is the most popular in aluminium according to some fabricators and installers.

“What is particularly interesting to see is the greater variety of colours being chosen today by customers compared to, say, ten years ago, particularly when it comes to our Uni-Blinds. All the bespoke integral blind units that we manufacture for customers are created using ScreenLine systems from the global market leader, Pellini S.p.A. who have been extremely active on new colour development in recent

BLIND & SHUTTERS 68 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

years.

“The arrival of new ScreenLine Venetian blind colours in agate grey (S120) and black (B160) during 2023, which are exclusively available in the UK from Morley Glass, was particularly welcome as they give homeowners the opportunity to complete their windows and doors with integral blinds for a fully ‘on-trend’ result. Other integral blind colours, such as silver (S157), anthracite (S159) and slate grey (S158), can also look amazing within coloured frames, but agate grey and black have made an instant impact in the market.”

When to choose agate grey and black integral blinds

Agate grey has been a popular alternative to anthracite for the past few years. Sometimes referred to as ‘Painswick’, it offers a more calming colour option versus the bolder greys given its hint of green, which makes it an excellent choice for homes with lighter coloured bricks or stone.

For homeowners looking for timeless appeal, combining agate grey integral blinds with the same

colour frames is an excellent choice. But it doesn’t always have to be about being complementary and colour-matching – agate grey blinds can also provide a contrasting look when installed into windows and doors with darker frames, such as black or anthracite, to achieve a statement look.

As a powerful colour, black UniBlinds are suitable for use in both contemporary or traditional windows and doors. As with the other colour options, they can be used to achieve a complementary look with matching frames or to contrast, sometimes with very distinctive, even unique, results.

Morley Glass has seen the popularity of black window and door frames grow as the colour’s appeal has increased for all kinds of interior features and fittings, such as taps and internal door handles. They can look particularly striking in properties featuring rendered walls with a light finish, as well as with lighter brick and stone, and these are the types of homes where the company sees the greatest appeal for black integral blinds, especially for ultra-modern styles such as bifold doors.

Looking ahead to a more colourdiverse future

Neutral colours are undoubtedly dominating home décor trends at the moment, but that’s not to say a very different set of colours will not be in fashion in five or ten years’ time. The rise in popularity of black and agate grey windows and doors is partly a response to these changing trends, but also a reflection of the level of product innovation today in the fenestration sector versus previous generations.

Pellini S.p.A. has a team of colour specialists whose job it is to ensure the colours applied to the Venetian blind slats within all ScreenLine systems are consistently high quality. This is crucial given the intense heat that can build up inside an integral blind unit in the strong summer sunshine, coupled with the impact of UV light, which means any new product must be able to stand the test of time to meet customer expectations.

Ian concludes, “The window industry is getting better all the time at creating products with lasting colour, whether that’s on integral blinds or frames, and that provides greater inspiration for homeowners looking to make their properties just the way they want them.”

Brisant’s Lock Is First To Pass The New Security Test

Following a successful test on 25th April, Brisant-Secure says its patented ALPS lock technology is the first to pass the 2024 security test update introduced in January. This update will be used for 3* euro cylinder locks by Secured by Design, PAS24 and Sold Secure Diamond.

Why is there a new standard, and why hasn’t everyone heard about it?

According to Brisant-Secure, in the never-ending tug-of-war between burglars and security standards, installers need to know they are selling the most secure doors to homeowners. So, the BSI, Sold Secure and Secured by Design have moved fast to ensure that the new security test will prevent inventive burglars getting ahead and finding a way to defeat 3* locks. The new 2024 standard

will reassure door makers, installers, and homeowners that doors with 3* locks continue to be the gold standard for door security.

Nick Dutton, CEO of BrisantSecure, the creators of Ultion, said: “We are delighted to be the first to attain the new security standard. The reason nobody else has achieved the standard is because it is so tough. We knew when we acquired the Deseo business earlier this year that the ALPS (Always Locked Protection System) lock was close to achieving this new standard, so we focused on adding even more patented measures to get the test result last week. It’s also proof of Brisant’s commitment to being first with a solution to new security attacks.”

UAP Maximises Security With New Smart Lock Feature

UAP has launched a new patented feature which, claims the company, sees the Ionic become the first electronic door lock to detect different forms of attack.

Created thanks to haptic technology, which uses sensors to sense/detect the heat and vibrations, the innovation alerts the homeowner via their smartphone if there is any attempt to break in or risk of

If the door is kicked, if a drill is used on the lock, or if someone tries to gain access without using the Ionic App or key fob, the homeowner will be notified immediately. The technology can also detect heat, so will send an alert if there is a fire outside the door or if a blow torch is used.

Launched in 2023 following

four years of research and development, the Ionic is the first in a series of smart products to be launched by UAP’s Fullex-ai brand.

Commenting on the new feature, David Jennings, CEO of UAP, said: “We developed the Ionic’s haptic technology based on customer feedback which signalled a growing demand for more robust security covering all eventualities.

“Although most electronic locks provide a very safe option there are still vulnerabilities, which we have resolved with this new feature. Homeowners can now benefit from an unrivalled electronic lock that is always on guard.”

The Ionic’s high levels of security add to a range of features designed to improve the experience both for both fabricators and the end user.

No complex wiring is needed to install the lock with a setup that mirrors the Fullex Autolock. Unlike other electronic locks, the Ionic also has an integrated power supply and allows wireless charging. A wireless unit, which fits easily to a door frame, connects to a control unit and powers the lock.

Providing flexibility, the homeowner can set up new users and a wide range of time settings using the Ionic App. It is also possible to set up onetime-only access for workmen and to add and delete users at the press of a button.

Available in anthracite grey, chrome and white, the Ionic can be paired with rose handles to complement interior design briefs. Alternatively, it can be installed with classic door handles on a backplate or high security front door handles.

25 Year Furniture Guarantee from VBH

VBH, the hardware specialist behind the greenteQ range, has announced a brand new guarantee that covers the greenteQ residential door, patio door and window furniture range for up to 25 years.

The popular greenteQ furniture range has now been split into two separate groups. The stainless steel architeQ range covers furniture for residential doors and patio doors, with the mainstream greenteQ Suite covering the same but with the addition of window furniture.

The surface finish on greenteQ Suite products has been increased to 20 years, with a 25 year guarantee available on architeQ furniture.

In addition to these extended guarantee periods, where the guarantees really stand out is that, for what they term ‘qualifying customers’, VBH will deal with any claims directly

with the consumer, leaving the fabricator and installer free to do what they do best; make and sell windows and doors.

VBH advise that they are able to offer these guarantees based on what they describe as greenteQ furniture’s “excellent performance in test lab conditions, and real-installation experience.”

Head of brand at VBH, Dan Powell, says: “Two big headaches reported by manufacturers and installers are firstly, having to send an engineer to site to investigate and rectify a problem and, secondly, being unsure as to what the guarantee on a particular product or finish actually is! It really isn’t as simple as it should be. We have made our guarantee as transparent as possible. Depending on the product, it’s 20 or 25 years, and we will take care of the whole claim and replacement process direct with the consumer for qualifying customers, so they can fit greenteQ and forget.

“As well as taking the hassle out of dealing with any claims, the 20 and 25 year terms give everyone in the supply chain absolute assurance that greenteQ furniture is built to last, and that VBH, as the furniture manufacturer, will stand by the product. Our aim is to help installers turn enquiries into sales.”

VBH advise that many qualifying companies are already taking advantage of the ‘fully serviced’ guarantee, with many more in the pipeline. They urge interested companies to get in touch to discuss the details directly.

Hurst Opens New Opportunities With New Panel Styles

Hurst has launched the new Monaco One PVC-U door panel style, which offers a contemporary composite style aesthetic, creating more opportunities for installers to sell aspirational doors to homeowners.

“Our panel range is still highly popular,” sales director Mark Atkinson said. “Whilst purportedly a mature product, it accounts for a large part of our business, and customers are

asking us for even more styles and colours.

“According to a customer survey we carried out at the start of the year, 62% of respondents believe that the most important factor when selling a door to an end-user is its appearance and design.

“This supports our recent product development, and our newly launched Monaco One PVC-U door style, which brings a

striking modern and aspirational look to our PVC-U panel door range.”

The new Monaco One door style is featured in Hurst’s ‘You’re Home With Hurst’ PVC-U panel door brochure, which also showcase’s the company’s Harmony Glass Collection. This provides contemporary, etched effect geometric designs that feature on both sides of the double-glazed unit to create an elegant 3D effect.

“We are also expanding our Harmony glass range to be available in more door styles. Again, this broadens the available product range for installation companies, and gives them a competitive edge,” Mark said.

Mark said that GRP composite door sales continue to grow, driven by modern designs and industry beating thermal and weather performance. But panel sales show no signs of diminishing.

“We are seeing some real statement composite doors leave our facility here in Hull, so it’s no surprise that other homeowners see those installations and want similar designs for their own homes,” he said.

“By extending our panel range, we are helping our customers meet the demand in all market sectors.”

“The future of entrance doors is composite based,” Mark said. “But we can’t ignore the sizeable demand and desire that still lies within the panel market, or indeed our customers who operate proactively and successfully to help satisfy that demand.

“We aim to give them the products and support to help them meet those needs.”

Force 8 Introduces Innovative Door and a Half

Force 8 has unveiled its latest product: the Door and a Half. This pioneering addition to the Force 8 range redefines accessibility with its simple, but ingenious design, offering customers unprecedented flexibility and convenience when it comes to access.

Traditionally, side panels on door frames remain fixed, limiting accessibility,

however, Force 8’s Door and a Half ingeniously integrates a hinged and locking system into the side panel, allowing it to open independently. This innovative feature significantly widens the entrance, easing access for individuals with mobility challenges, including wheelchair users. Moreover, it facilitates the delivery of bulky items such as furniture, simplifying logistical challenges

for homeowners and businesses alike, particularly if the entry space or hallway is at a difficult angle.

The main door operates autonomously, ensuring ‘seamless’ functionality, and will probably be the normal way of entry. By unlocking the side panel, homeowners or businesses can effortlessly expand the entrance, adapting it to their specific needs, once finished the side panel can be locked back into place. Security, says Force 8, remains paramount, with the main door equipped with a traditional Yale night latch and 5 lever mortice deadlocks for enhanced protection and peace of mind.

According to Force 8, the system is compatible with any door design within their extensive range,

catering to diverse aesthetic preferences from traditional to contemporary. Force 8’s in-house paint facility allows customers to choose from a wide array of colours to suit their individual style and property aesthetics.

“We are always looking for new ways to improve our products, and although this is a simple idea, we know it will strike a chord with a lot of customers and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions,”

Endurance Doors Shines Spotlight On Finishing Touches

Endurance Doors is highlighting its impressive ability to delight homeowners across the UK with unique and highly customisable composite doors.

To complement its extensive portfolio of over 85 door styles, which can be produced in 19 different colours, the manufacturer offers an equally impressive choice of hardware and glazing.

In order to showcase these important finishing touches, the business has enhanced its already extensive website with two new and dedicated pages.

Russell Hensman, group marketing manager at Endurance Doors, comments: “When it comes to creating a composite door that perfectly accommodates a homeowner’s individual tastes as

well as the style of their property and its surroundings, the devil is often in the detail.

“Glazing and hardware may seem like small flourishes, but they can have a big influence on the overall look of a door. Aside from this aesthetic impact, they can also make a significant contribution towards a door’s functionality – for instance, by enhancing security or privacy, or by enabling the incorporation of smart sensing and locking technology.”

The new glazing page on the Endurance Doors’ website allows homeowners to explore the brand’s full selection of over 30 glazing styles, all of which are available as either double or triple glazed units.

Browsers can view all of the glazing in the Endurance range

in close-up detail by watching specially recorded videos. They can also use an interactive tool to understand the different opacity levels on offer.

Plus, if all this choice becomes a little daunting, the new glazing page features information on Endurance Doors’ most popular combinations of glazing, door styles and colour to provide some quick and easy inspiration.

The new hardware page on the Endurance Doors’ website is just as informative. It features 360° product imagery and allows people to take an in-depth look at the various hardware options offered by the manufacturer.

This includes a choice of seven carefully curated ranges, each consisting of products such as letterplates, handles, knockers, knobs, and escutcheons, and available in different colours and finishes. This enables homeowners to realise any look – from the classical to the contemporary and the urban to the rustic.

The new hardware page also provides information on additional products supplied by Endurance Doors such as door numerals, its door guards, which provide a more robust and secure alternative to traditional doors chains, and the smart, ERA TouchKey keyless locking system.

There are even tips on maintaining the manufacturer’s door hardware to maximise its longevity and enduring appeal.

Their new Platinum44 is an attractive, contemporary steel door which has been designed to provide installers with a high-performance door at a competitive price point.

The door leaf of the Platinum44 is manufactured with an insulated polyurethan core and a galvanized steel surface which makes it resistant to twisting and warping. It is set within a steel reinforced PVC outer frame and is fully accredited meeting Building Regulations parts M, L and Q.

The door features the unique Colourcoat Prisma textured surface from Tata Steel, a threelayer coating system which provides a robust yet ‘beautiful’ finish, providing the highest standards for corrosion and

UV resistance. The result, says Hörmann Truedor, is a door that is low maintenance, able to withstand the test of time and will continue to look good for years to come.

With a 44mm thick door leaf, high security multi-point locking systems and Kinetica 3-star locking cylinders – Platinum44 has been extensively tested against all forms of attack and has achieved Secured by Design accreditation.

‘Epwin Window Systems’ new Stellar Aluminium Inline Sliding Door is setting a new benchmark in compliance, innovation and aesthetics.’ This is the view of Phil Parry, technical director at Epwin Window Systems who encourages fabricators to look beyond the headlines when it comes to identifying the standout qualities of aluminium sliding doors.

Phil explains: “Most aluminium sliding patio doors use a dummy sash to create the fixed pane. The Stellar Aluminium Inline Sliding Door is different because we have opted to remove the dummy sash on the fixed pane and utilise a direct glazed fixed light. It’s a technical innovation that makes a compelling difference. It not only enhances thermal efficiency but also ensures compliance with Building Regulations, including Part L, in both new build and extension projects.”

Phil continued: “Moreover, the

PRODUCT NEWS 80 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

Looking beyond the headlines with Stellar

removal of the dummy sash results in sleeker sightlines and an increased glazed area, further elevating the door’s slimline aesthetics and contemporary appeal, even in smaller apertures.”

Fabrication and installation processes are streamlined with the Stellar Inline Sliding Door. By reducing the number of manufactured parts from three to two, Epwin Window Systems says it saves time, material costs and ultimately adds value to the bottom line. Like all products in the Stellar arsenal, installation is made ‘effortless’ with patented knock-in glazing beads, ensuring a swift and neat finish.

According to Epwin Window

Systems, meticulous attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the Stellar Inline Sliding Door’s design. Phil said: “The 35mm slim interlock has been given a lot of consideration. Rather than the typical ‘wet glazed’ solutions, we opted for a simpler, cleaner dry glazed bonding solution which means that if the glass is ever damaged, it’s much more straightforward to replace than comparative door systems.”

Each sash can be up to 1675mm wide, so there are fewer sashes and wider glazed expanses. And because the outerframe seamlessly aligns with the sash, the door delivers a flush appearance that perfectly

suites with other products in the Stellar Aluminium range. It’s available in 2, 3, and 4-pane configurations with a maximum total width of 6500mm, so it’s a solution for the largest of spaces.

Thermal efficiency is similarly impressive. Intelligently designed polyamide thermal breaks deliver a U-value of 1.4 W/ m²K with 28mm double glazing and as low as 0.9 W/m²K with triple glazing. At the same time, effective seals and bespoke design features provide classleading performance to BS 6375 standard.

Phil concludes; “The Stellar Aluminium Inline Sliding Door epitomises Epwin Window Systems’ commitment to design excellence. It represents a shift from superficial headlines to a deeper appreciation of what truly sets a product apart.”

AluK ‘Opens Up’ New Slider Opportunities For Customers

AluK has launched a new ultra-low U-Value, slim sight line Lift and Slide patio door, which it says will ‘open up’ new opportunities for customers in the higher end of the retail market, where demand and margins are both still relatively strong, and in demanding coastal applications and highrise apartment projects.

The new AluK S140 Lift and Slide has the slim sightlines and flush sash aesthetic, coupled with low U-Values of just 1.2Uw double glazed and 0.8Uw triple glazed, claims the company.

It’s been designed in conjunction with AluK’s team in Italy so has all the sleek, minimalist flair you would

expect, as well as clever UK engineering which delivers a compact 140mm frame depth and double or triple track frame options.

The new door offers plenty of flexibility and can accommodate double or triple glazed units depending on the thermal performance required and, where acoustics are a priority, has plenty of capacity for the larger glass thicknesses.

For fabricators, the S140 Lift and Slide has been designed with easy preps to make it quick to manufacture and a dedicated sub cill and simple add-on for trickle vents. It also comes with the option of AluK’s new Quik Clip clip-in bead system.

AluK’s managing director Russell Yates commented: “This is a door which ticks every box for fabricators and installers looking to get a bigger slice of the lucrative premium market. It’s easy to manufacture and, thanks to the addition of our Quik Clip system, incredibly quick to glaze.

“Crucially, it’s also available at a competitive price point which will ensure it can deliver strong and sustainable margins. With bifolds and sliders now selling at an almost 50/50 sales split, and the latest industry research indicating that London-based buyers actively prefer sliders, the S140 really is a great new option for AluK customers who want to win business beyond their existing bifold offering.”

The new S140 comes with AluK’s popular Novae handles and security, wind and weather performance credentials.

Reynaers’ Next Generation Thermal Commercial Door

Developed specifically for the UK market, Reynaers Aluminium has launched its new generation, high usage anti-finger trap thermal commercial door and framing system.

Featuring a unique slim bulbstyle with a radius of only 40mm, a profile sightline of 81mm, and achieving a U-value as low as 1.1W/m2K, claims the company, Vision 7 has a unique postinstallation adjustable bottom pivot that allows installers to make final adjustments after the door has been installed.

Suitable for a range of groundfloor applications such as schools, hospitals, retail outlets, leisure facilities, offices and entrances to large commercial buildings, this thermally broken door is an ideal solution to meet the requirements of sustainability-driven projects and also provides a range of additional advantages applicable throughout the supply chain, according to the company.

Ian Osborne, UK product development manager, said: “We have listened to a range of stakeholders across the industry and considered all the feedback

in developing the Vision 7 Thermal Commercial Door to offer a premium combination of optimal performance and ease of production, as well as providing the slimline aesthetics that architects and developers want to see. It can be manufactured up to 3m height and 120Kg weight; leaf width 1.25m.

“To maximise value and minimise waste, profiles are supplied in a range of optimised bar lengths including 5.1m, optimal for doors up to 2.5m height. Many profiles are available in half and quarter lengths, and for large doors up to 3m mullions and door styles are available at optimal 6.1m or 6.5m lengths. Transom connections are cut straight to minimise milling and the number of components required.

“In addition, the system can be supplied with a range of universal fixation pieces that provide a simple slide and turn solution and ensure that the stock requirements of the system are minimised. There are also many hardware solutions for this system, but we have sourced and tested two key industry suppliers that provide the quality and value

suited to the Vision 7 solution.

“We have also developed a new style bulb with a radius of only 40mm to enable the production of slim profile doors with a visual width of only 81mm, which in combination with a wide range of finite component details, enables the production of extremely durable doors that can achieve a U-value of 1.4W/m2K with double glazing units and a lower value of 1.1W/m2K with triple glazing. The system can support glass thickness up to 50mm. Standard and HI variants are available. We also supply a 100mm outer frame so that the system can connect seamlessly to MasterLine 8 windows and doors.

“Well received by installers, the system has also been built with a unique post-installation pivot adjustment feature to help to save valuable time on site. This feature means that the door only needs to be fitted once, and then bottom pivot adjustments can made without having to remove the door multiple times to make adjustments.

“Classic of Reynaers Aluminium, we have concentrated on the details of the product that make it an industry-leading door that is built to last the test of high usage over a long period of time. It achieves a good AWW rating and security and safety of PAS 24:2022 and PANIC: EN 1125+179. The door is subject to continued durability tests and has achieved over 400,000 open and close double swing cycles to date.

“Current hardware options include standard hook lock (Part Q compliant, PAS 24: 2022), electric strike, magnetic lock, security lock and lever handle. Coming soon will be face applied panic hardware, concealed panic hardware, access control via solenoid bolt and panic hardware.”

Promat’s Glass Doors

Balance Fire Safety With Aesthetics

A range of fire rated glass doors developed by Promat provides architects, specifiers and clients with a stylish solution that meets their passive fire protection objectives without compromising

aesthetic or daylighting goals.

Three highly specialised door systems – Pyrosec Door, Pyrosec Slimlite and Promat E Door –have been engineered by Promat

with the aim of maximising the door’s glass area and minimising the framing. They enable interior spaces to be designed in a way that facilitates high levels of natural light transmission within rooms and clear visibility between them, whilst being compliant with the fire containment and evacuation strategy.

All three systems feature high quality fire rated glass framed within horizontal and vertical frame members, stiles and rails that are manufactured in stainless steel. This combination of materials, coupled with Promat’s design expertise, has proved to be effective at resisting fire in third party testing, meaning specifiers can confidently choose glass doors with up to EI60 (integrity and insulation) protection, subject to the door’s size and design parameters, says the company.

Promat’s fire rated glass doors are designed to offer safety with style, enabling architects to meet the aesthetic and operational ambitions of clients seeking

a modern design for their commercial or public buildings. They can be incorporated into fire rated glass screens, partitions and other features created using the Promat Systemglas fire resistant glazing system, which offers steel, timber, over-clad, paintable and concealed framing options.

The Promat E door provides integrityonly (E) fire resistance with the benefit of being able to incorporate a full height back to back handle or “through glass” pull handle.

In addition to their physical resistance to heat and flames, fire rated glass doors play another important role in delivering safer buildings because they offer easier visibility for emergency services in the event of a fire. And Promat glass fire doors can also be specified to incorporate closer devices that are triggered in the event of a fire to offer a reactive barrier to prevent the spread of fire, heat and smoke.

Cath McLean, sales manager for glass at Promat UK said, “Glass doors are often preferred to more typical fire doors, such as timber doors, because they present less of a visual barrier between individual rooms and communal spaces and allow light transmission to be higher. But the creation of more open and connected spaces has to go hand in hand with fire safety, and this is why we’ve created these three glass door options.”

AluK BSF70 Gets New Handles And A New Cill

AluK has announced some significant enhancements to its popular BSF70 HI bifold door, designed to give customers even more choice and flexibility.

There is now a surface-mounted lift and turn handle available as an alternative to the more traditional pop-up T handle, and a new ‘easy to install’ integrated cill.

The new ‘easy to operate, easy to fit’ lift and turn handle provides what AluK says is the ideal combination of value, aesthetics and functionality and comes in white, black, silver, chrome and anthracite grey to suit any of the BSF70 HI colours.

The integrated cill uses the existing nose projection from AluK’s premium F82 bifold and gives the iconic BSF70 HI a

new look with a two part profile for the first time. Because it is added last, the cill eliminates any potential damage on site. It also means, for the new build or extensions market, it removes the need for the builder to cut out the existing brick course to achieve a level internal floor finish with a rebated frame.

Russell Yates, managing director of AluK, commented: “We’re continually improving and enhancing all our products to keep pace with customer demand and a changing market.

“As we’ve already shown with the launch of the Quik Clip clipin bead for the BSF70 HI, even with our best-selling products there’s no room for complacency as we constantly look to stay ahead of the competition.”

From Enquiry To Installation

Effective customer service can help you secure business for the long term, and the right software choice can help you achieve it, according to Cyncly’s Sales Manager Greg Beachim.

It’s a cliché, but a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. And in a manufacturing environment, efficiency is constrained by bottlenecks.

Typically, we think of those bottlenecks as being a slow cutting and machining centre, or not enough people assembling the windows, or even an inefficient dispatch department. But in reality it is any point along the enquiry-toinstallation journey.

If you think a manufacturer’s responsibility ends when the window is unloaded on site, you would be missing a trick. We’ve created the ability within our Zandi module for manufacturers to offer more control over the manufacturing process to their customers, which creates a more streamlined journey from enquiry through to installation, reducing

error and saving money in the process.

And this is being driven by demand, because window companies are just as happy today to manage their relationship with their supplier via an online portal, rather like how they would manage regular purchases via an online store. This means fewer phone calls, allowing customers to interact with manufacturers whenever they want, while removing a potential for errors to occur.

Our Zandi platform allows manufacturers to create accounts for their customer where they can log in, see any conversations, answer questions, pull up order confirmations, confirm production dates, set delivery dates, and issue invoices.

This also improves processes at the retail end, because window companies are not isolated from the manufacturing process. And

because everyone benefits from a joined up approach, you are more likely to see repeat business as a result.

Thanks to Zandi, and the fully connected Window Designer software platform, manufacturers can create workflows and streamline information based on triggers and events, which then allows them to remove paper from the operation altogether.

This results in products being manufactured and dispatched at the optimal time – for both manufacturer and customer. At every point in the process, the window company can see where their order is, and the manufacturer has a complete overview of the whole operation, ensuring that all parts work seamlessly together.

It reduces administration overheads. It minimises staffing levels. And it promotes efficiency and profitability at all levels.

Finally, by putting more control in the hands of your customers, you are creating an environment that makes it hard for them to leave, because you ultimately save them more money than alternative systems where they are alienated from the manufacturing and delivery process.

This is where Cyncly excels as a business, because Cyncly’s expertise extends out far beyond design processing and optimisation solutions for the manufacturing space. Cyncly is focused on the different spaces within the home, and how the homeowner’s buying journey is simplified from initial enquiry all the way through to installation.

And we are seeing this trend feed back up through the supply chain, creating more opportunities for manufacturers to better manage the product’s journey from enquiry all the way through to installation.

We also appreciate the reliability and service support we get from the Haffner team which adds value to our business.”

Together, the machines will give both UK Doors Online and Trade Window Centre the quality and capacity they need to meet growing demand for their products, which include aluminium bifold, lift-and-slide, sliding patio doors and aluminium windows.

Andrew comments: “Despite tough trading conditions, UK Doors Online has achieved year-on-year growth of 8% and 16% in the past two years. We couldn’t have kept pace with demand without the skill and commitment of our team – or the exceptional quality and efficiency of the machines we’ve purchased from Haffner. Our latest machine investment will help us continue to capitalise on our growing presence in the market.”

Matthew Thomas, managing director at Haffner, is confident that the new machinery will give both UK Doors Online and the Trade Window Centre the

solutions they need to continue their impressive growth trajectory. He says: “We always take time to understand every customer’s plans and requirements so we can recommend the machines that will best suit their needs. This approach ensures that our customers receive tailored solutions that align with their business objectives and facilitate their ongoing success.”

The FOM Industrie FMC 120 CNC machining centre has been designed to carry out drilling and milling operations on aluminium and steel profiles. Features include three independently controlled axes and a worktable with pneumatic positioning at 0°, 90° and 180°. At the same time, the machining head allows machining on three sides of the profile and on the two ends with the aid of milling disks and blades. Both the TT 405 and TT 415 double mitre saws streamline profile cutting, making the process more efficient.

+Quadra Redefines Emmegi’s Iconic 20-Axis Modular CNC

+Quadra is the next generation of Emmegi’s iconic 20-axis modular Quadra CNC, which can cut, drill and machine all in one single operation.

Designed to deliver even more volume, bigger capacity and faster speeds, it represents a significant leap from the L0, L1, L2 and L3 versions of the original Quadra, which have long set the standard for precision engineering in aluminium and are installed at many of the UK’s leading fabricators.

Emmegi states that the new +Quadra with its 360° rotary based milling, drilling and tapping on 4 faces of the profile and 360° rotary cutting blade does everything that the original Quadra can do – and more.

As previously, there are four high frequency electro spindles for +Quadra L0 and six and eight for +Quadra L1 and +Quadra L2, all housed within a soundproofed cabin. Amongst

the most eye catching new features though are dynamic counterblocks which can be programmed to recognise the profiles being selected and automatically adjust and set the vices without the need to set up individual counterblocks each time.

There is also a new head and tail end milling module and cutter unit with variable rotation speed up to 8000rpm and an automatic labelling module which can position the label on 3 sides of the profile.

In terms of volume and capacity, there are clever new additions to the loading and bar feed system which allow for extended unmanned cycles. This includes a profile lifting system which picks up the profile and automatically transfers it to the operating section, and the option of a high capacity belt loading magazine which can accommodate upwards of 8 profiles at a time. There is also a high capacity unloading magazine which automatically aligns all the machined pieces from one section before they are transferred to the unloading belt and, with 4m, 7.5m or 9m

MACHINERY 92 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2024

options, allows the entire volume of profiles from the loading magazine to accumulate without any operator intervention.

Ian Latimer, Emmegi (UK)’s managing director commented:

“Like the original Quadra, the key benefit of +Quadra for fabricators is the fact that it does the work of a team of operators. That’s where the real payback comes in, as well as in the precision and accuracy it achieves on cuts and preps which mean there’s never any need for reloading or repositioning.

“The new +Quadra machine is available now as a modular offering with a number of prepackaged options which we think make it easy and cost effective for fabricators to choose the features which matter most to them. They can still choose from a long list of individual options though if they want something even more bespoke and we can provide all the help and advice they need.”

Emplas Builds Capacity With Two New Cutting And Machining Centres

Emplas has continued its multimillion-pound investment in its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility with the addition of two new Stuga ZX5 automated sawing and machining centres.

Installed in its main manufacturing facility, the two next generation cutting and machining centres bring new precision to window and door manufacture, while also significantly increasing capacity, says the company.

This includes up to 800 windows each per week , building on the cutting and machining capability of Emplas’ pre-existing machining and sawing centres.

Installed in March as part of a major investment programme to deliver increased flexibility

to its customers, Jody Vincent, sales director, Emplas, said the six-figure investment gave the fabricator one of the UK’s most advanced window and door manufacturing facilities.

“We have ambitious growth plans but we are committed to delivering them on the strength of product quality and the flexibility that we bring to service”, he said. “That starts with precision in preparation of the profile.

“The investment that we’re making with the addition of two new Stuga cutting and machining centres, builds additional foundation into our model, supporting growth, driving even higher levels of product quality, and allowing us to bring even more flexibility to our offer.”

Emplas’ two new Stuga ZX5s are built around an advanced rotary tooling ring with eight high speed spindles. This gives it a 360° machining capability, maximising output with ‘V’ and ‘Y’ notches produced on either side of the profile in a single pass, according to the company.

Part of its continuing multimillion-pound investment programme and infrastructure investment strategy, the new Stuga sawing and machining centres build on the pre-existing capacity delivered by Emplas’ three Schirmer machining and cutting centres, and a preexisting Stuga.

Emplas is currently reorganising its factory footprint, following the addition of a second 25,000 sq ft manufacturing space, which will house its expanded composite door offer.

The release of space within its pre-existing 57,000sq ft facility will accommodate new machinery and further optimise production.

Trio Of Senior Products Used In New Nottingham Residential Scheme

Three is the magic number for Senior Architectural Systems as solutions from the manufacturer’s range of aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling help complete The Barnum – a new residential development on Nottingham’s Queen’s Road.

Designed by Franklin Ellis Architects, and built by main contractor Graham Construction, the new nine storey building has been developed by Blockworks, a joint venture between Bloc Group and Network Rail. The project, which is one of the largest recent

developments in the city, has been built on what was a vacant site next to Nottingham’s railway station, helping to regenerate the wider area and provide a boost to the local rental market.

Senior collaborated with specialist installer Duplus Architectural Systems to specify three of its most popular products, including its award-winning Pure window system which has been installed throughout the 345 individual apartments. Producing exceptionally low U-values thanks to its patented thermal design, claims the company, both tilt/turn and casement window styles have

been used.

Safety and security throughout the development has also been enhanced through the use of Senior’s SPW501 aluminium commercial door. This high performance, thermally broken polyamide aluminium framing system is ideal for busy environments and is available in multiple configurations and designs. On the ground floor communal areas, the façade design has benefitted from Senior’s slimline SF52 aluminium curtain wall system.

Back To School For Fentrade

Fentrade has recently manufactured and supplied 55 casement windows for Llanidloes High School in Powys as part of the school’s refurbishment programme. Working alongside trade customer Window-Tec based in Builth Wells, Fentrade has helped to upgrade the school with high-quality, energy-efficient aluminium windows.

The school’s original windows were single-glazed and in a poor state of repair. The single glazing meant poor thermal performance which contributed to higher energy bills and excessive carbon emissions. Similarly, the original windows had limited ventilation which negatively impacted the learning environment.

Recognising the need for

a comprehensive solution, Fentrade and Window-Tec worked closely with Llanidloes High School addressing several design options to meet the project’s requirements. Together, they selected white high gloss frames to emulate the existing window design whilst ensuring maximum thermal efficiency. The 55 aluminium casement windows were manufactured from Aluk’s 58BW HI thermally efficient system for optimum performance, contributing to a comfortable and sustainable learning environment for the students, according to the company.

Chris Reeks, managing director at Fentrade, said: “Understanding the importance of minimising disruption to the school’s operation was imperative. Hands-on

project management and tight communication with Window-Tec were critical at every stage as we delivered products to site, in full, to meet the phased installation schedule set out by our customer.”

Dave Evans, director at WindowTec, said: “As a refurbishment job, this is one of the largest we have undertaken. Fentrade’s support throughout the tender, ordering and manufacturing stages was invaluable. Despite the need for competitive pricing, Fentrade ensured that the product met our client’s requirements. Since winning the contract, Fentrade has consistently delivered according to our weekly schedule, keeping us on track with the programme.”

Chris concluded: “This project has been a great success and a testament to all parties involved. The professionalism and skill of the installation team at WindowTec was exceptional and we are delighted to have helped them deliver this first-class school refurbishment project.”

A Helping Hand For Specifiers From SFS

Despite the prevalence of design and build contracts across many construction sectors, there is still a high proportion of architectural practices, along with developer clients, which seek to achieve excellence in the specification and delivery of projects: whether in relation to targeting greater energy efficiency, the upper levels of BREEAM, enhanced whole life cost, or perhaps to meet site specific challenges.

In any of these situations, it is likely to be the outer envelope, and in particular the cladding system, which plays a pivotal role; and presents an area where consultants will likely seek greater support from manufacturers to ensure aspirations are achieved. Inevitably, there is a balance to be struck between aspiration and cost constraints, including pressures to switch specifications as the programme evolves.

As a highly experienced specialist in the design and development of rainscreen cladding support systems, as well as carbon and stainless-steel fastening solutions, SFS Group enjoys

excellent working relationships with a number of leading architectural practices, leading to the manufacturer’s involvement with a long list of landmark projects.

Andy Stolworthy, the director of product and market development for SFS, observes: “Not only is it advantageous for us to be able to engage early in the design process, to offer a consultative approach and optimise the outcomes; but the later that contractors attempt to change the specification, the higher the cost implications are likely to be. Ideally, adhering to the approved design parameters will enable goals to be achieved, whether that is on sustainability or particularly thermal performance, where sub-contractors are often tempted to try and switch specifications without rechecking the calculations. For example, switching away from our extruded aluminium brackets to folded ones will not only mean more of the cheaper ones are required to carry the load, but the increased points of contact with the main structure negatively impact the

thermal performance. Ultimately, the U-Value calculations are invalidated, while the labour element of the installation cost also rises.”

SFS says that in contrast to most competitors which do not have staff fully dedicated to specifiers, SFS has two managers covering the North and South of the UK, who not only look to identify projects where they can directly add value, but who also liaise with the 12 regional technical sales managers, along with other members of the technical team. This enables them to work directly with the design teams and material manufacturers, or OEMs, and key contractors.

Alluding to the crucial aspect of safety, Andy Stolworthy continues: “Some of the larger clients are keenly interested in their estates, and also the longevity of the properties they develop, but most prefer to deal with manufacturers solely through the design process. And this distancing can result in inappropriate fall protection systems being installed. Ensuring safety for those involved with long term maintenance or later adaptations of a building is paramount; particularly with regard to specifying robust horizontal lifeline systems for fall protection. Our lifeline systems are integral to the secure and efficient maintenance as well as installation of building envelopes.

“In order that occupants can enjoy buildings which are safe and comfortable to live in –where the fire-stopping and the rest of the detailing is right – where condensation does not form around all of the window openings or other issues occur –we have to ensure we engineer them correctly. Ultimately, we are here to help ensure the best outcome for any project we are involved on.”

Framexpress Adds Social Media Workshop To Its Customer Support Package

Trade fabricator, Framexpress, has been praised by its customers after hosting its first Social Media Workshop – a new arm of support for its CLUB Framexpress customers.

Partnering with its external marketing agency, Balls2 Marketing, the Telford-based fabricator welcomed over 15 of its customers for an insightful day in Coventry, providing them with all of the social media tips and advice they need to use their social media platforms to generate more leads and grow their business.

Aimed at beginner level, the workshop focused on helping customers understand their social media goals; which platforms would be best for optimum lead generation; if paid social media advertising is a worthy investment; and a range of hints, tips and risks they should be aware of.

Attendees could also speak one-on-one with the team at Balls2 Marketing, who reviewed customers’ existing profiles and offered advice on how to optimise their strategy and content.

Stuart Green, joint managing director at Framexpress, talks about extending its support for customers saying: “After 25 years, we’ve learnt that customer support means more than delivering high-quality products on time and in full –in fact, it is the minimum we should offer our customers. The introduction of our new Social Media Workshop has allowed us to offer a comprehensive package of support, alongside our extensive technical support, dedicated sales team, personalised marketing literature and machinery investments.

“Navigating social media can be tricky, especially when it

comes to generating business from it, and knowing where to start is often what stops people altogether. By offering our customers simple tips and tricks on how to navigate these tools, it will hopefully be a valuable method of generating business for them.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who came to our first workshop, and we hope that they took something away from it that will help them going forward.”

Hilary from Uniseal Ltd, a Framexpress customer who attended the workshop, talks about her experience, saying: “The social media workshop was extremely informative. My social media knowledge is limited, so I really appreciate Framexpress providing a dedicated service that gives us customers a hand in improving how we use social media to help grow our business.”

Any CLUB Framexpress customer who may be interested in attending the next Social Media Workshop are urged to email Donna Dunn on donnadunn@framexpress.co.uk to register their interest.

Affordable Windows Launches Timberlook Installer Packs

Affordable Window Systems has launched a new Installer Pack which will be made available free of charge to installers of the heritage uPVC brand Timberlook.

The packs are designed to provide new and existing installers with everything they need to promote and install Timberlook flush sash windows and doors.

As well as a practical dummy sash removal tool, the packs include branded Timberlook apparel such as a hoodie, t-shirt, cap and beanie hat, allowing installers to showcase their affiliation with the Timberlook brand.

The new packs build on the in-house lead generation, marketing brochures and technical specifications, free-of-charge sample windows and dedicated

account managers the firm already provides.

“We’re dedicated to fostering strong partnerships with our installers, and their success is our top priority,” says Amelia Gaughan, head of marketing at Affordable Window Systems.

“We’ve made it even easier for our customers to place orders by having our range available on Tommy Trinder’s Framepoint platform, and we’ve invested in

offering marketing resources and in-house lead generation for our Timberlook customers.

“Originally, when embarking on our lead generation mission, we were aiming for an average of 200-250 leads per month. We are thrilled to announce that, as of the start of this year, we are currently averaging out at over three times this amount – with the vast majority being strong leads at that!

“There is no doubt that leads such as these have contributed to our milestone of over 65,000 flush sash frames being manufactured since the launch of Timberlook just seven years ago, says the company.

“And now, by equipping installers with branded apparel, we can help them showcase their Timberlook affiliation, project a professional image, and ultimately win more business within the booming heritage market.”

Windowlink Launches New Website

With Windowlink’s new website, it’s easier than ever for fabricators and installers to find out more about the company’s software, says the company.

On the newly designed site, customers can quickly and easily find the right plan for them, picking from your number of devices and desired contract length. In this way, they can tailor a bespoke package to their specific requirements.

On the front page, users will find a button that allows them to launch a support session, and a live chat function means the experienced Windowlink team can help with any questions they might have.

Managing director Mark Dudley comments: “When you’re dedicated to helping your clients grow, sometimes your own requirements take a back seat.

“That’s certainly been the case with our website, which has served us well for many years, but was long overdue a spruce up.

“We’ve put a lot of thought into making the new site as user-friendly as possible, and allowing our customers access the services and information they’re looking for in as few clicks as possible.

“I hope our customers find it useful, and enjoy using it!”

Focus and Vector, Windowlink’s software products, make sales pitches quicker, easier and more effective, claims the company.

Focus covers windows and doors, and Vector covers glazed extensions – but the core functionality is the same for both.

GGF To Promote Glazing Industry At Apprenticeship And Education Event

The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has announced that it will be promoting the industry at the Apprenticeship and Education Event in Birmingham on the 25th of April. The event attracts over 6,000 school and college students who are looking to be inspired about their future.

John Mannell, technical officer & training manager at the GGF, explains why the organisation has decided to exhibit at the event: “It is estimated that the construction industry needs an additional 50,000 skilled workers, including from the glass, glazing and fenestration industries, to meet the

Government’s net zero objective, so it is imperative that we play our part in attracting new talent to the sector.

“The Apprenticeship and Education Event will be the first apprenticeship fair we are attending this year, with another following in October and is suitable for school children from the age of 10 years old, right through to college students who are considering the next step on their career path, whether that’s further education, training, or employment. The glazing industry has so many different jobs to offer across installation, manufacture, human resources, marketing, and sales, to name just a few, it is

important that we are represented at these sorts of events. And if students of school leaving age want more information about jobs available now, they can access the industry Jobs Board that sits on both the GGF and FENSA websites.”

John continues: “As the most influential trade association in the industry, with GGF members making up over 60% of the sector’s £4 billion annual turnover, we are well positioned to raise awareness and represent the sector. Also, with our own Skilled Pathways Scheme already in place, we have an inside working knowledge of apprenticeships that we can share with the young people attending apprenticeship fairs.

“We’re confident we can play our part in helping the construction sector to meet the Government targets, but we do need to make the most of as many opportunities like this as we can to get there.”

Distinction Doors To Showcase Fire Door System At The Fire Safety Event

Distinction Doors will showcase its fire door system, fds, at The Fire Safety Event from April 30th to May 1st at the NEC in Birmingham.

At stand 5/A36, visitors can explore the fds FD30/E30 internal and external composite fire door system through live demonstrations, samples, and digital displays, guided by Distinction Doors’ technical and commercial representatives.

The event offers insight into Distinction’s half-moon glazed and thermally insulated composite fire door, available only with the fds system when part of a complete doorset.

Highlighted at the stand will be the 30-minute fire door style in striking Colza Yellow, alongside other fds door styles

and configurations, including standard and RAL color options.

Distinction emphasizes that the fds system is the sole UKCA accredited external composite fire doorset in the UK, enabling accredited fabricators to issue Declarations of Performance referencing compliance with BS EN 14351-1 and BS EN 16034 standards.

Gareth Roberts, head of fds sales for Distinction Doors, states, “The Fire Safety Event facilitates valuable connections between suppliers and specifiers, providing a platform to showcase our proven fds 30-minute fire door system.”

The fds fire door system is rigorously tested to British and European standards, achieving an average of 45 minutes integrity performance across multiple tests, claims the company.

Visitors can view test footage at stand 5/A36, where the fds system’s additional features, including ambient smoke control, security, weather resistance, and thermal performance, will also be highlighted.

The fds system holds Secured by Design accreditation and is triple Q-marked under the BM Trada Q-Mark Fire Door Manufacturer certification scheme.

Knowledge On Tap

Cornwall Group’s Chair Mark Mitchell, and HR and marketing apprentice Maisie Simpson discuss why apprentices are a sound investment.

Cornwall Group is into the second decade of what they refer to as their ‘apprenticeship journey’. Across all group companies (Mackenzie Glass, Cornwall Manufacturing, commercial glazing and retail arm Cornwall Glass & Glazing, and Forward Glass), and all sites, apprentices play an important role in the growth of the company, and represents its investment in the future.

“Back in the 1980s, we embraced what would have been called the YTS scheme,” Cornwall Chair Mark Mitchell says. “And we’re very proud to be working with colleagues at all sites from the Isles of Scilly, right up into our new Birmingham branch.”

About 20% of all Cornwall Group colleagues joined via the apprenticeship programme, 95%

of which have been with the group for 5+ years.

Apprentices have gone on to become supervisors, technical representative, senior IT technicians, project leaders, assistant managers, and even a managing Director.

“It’s vital that we bring in these younger individuals to join the experienced team that we have,” Mark says. “They are the leaders. They are the managers of the future, and they bring a different mindset to the running

of a business than maybe more experienced colleagues.”

One young person undergoing her apprenticeship at Cornwall Group is Maisie Simpson. Based out of Truro in Cornwall, Maisie has built her knowledge within the workplace while introducing new ideas learned while in the classroom.

“Since starting my HR and marketing apprenticeship within Cornwall Group, I’ve been learning new things from Emma, my manager,” Maisie says.

HR and marketing manager Emma Harris won the Workplace Mentor of the Year award at this year’s Truro and Penwith College’s Cornwall Apprenticeship Awards, and said she was honoured that her work was recognised because it means so much to the apprentices.

“She teaches me things that she knew, and then I would go to college, and they’d enhance my marketing abilities, so I could come back and progress the company through different strategies and different ways of marketing the

company,” Maisie continued.

“One idea I brought to the Cornwall Group team was launching on Tik Tok, which – appropriately –focused on our apprenticeship journey. I took social media from not only product-based, but to focus on the people.”

Mark explains that Cornwall Group has about 10%-15% of the team on an apprentice journey, or who have just concluded an apprenticeship journey.

“I think we’re very good ambassadors for apprentices,” Mark says. “We acquired Pilkington Glass in Bristol seven years ago. Perhaps surprising for a corporate business, but they did not have apprentices in that business. One of the first things we did was to bring in apprentices so that they can learn from the very experienced team that we have there. And, of course, we will repeat that success at Forward Glass in Birmingham.”

In December 2023, Cornwall Group acquired Birminghambased Forward Glass, which employs almost 100 people on a 100,000ft2 site.

“The people at Forward Glass are very experienced, and we are keen to tap into that knowledge,” Mark says. “So, we will be extending our very successful apprenticeship programme to the site in Birmingham, with the first apprentices employed by Christmas.”

Maisie explains that an apprenticeship is a great way to earn a wage while learning.

“For people who aren’t looking at universities, then I definitely think that Cornwall Group’s apprenticeship journey is a positive experience,” she says. “Every colleague within the company is so supportive and willing to help you.”

‘Summit’s’ Coming

Framexpress’ internal sales coordinator, Alyson Westbrook, has joined the team set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro later this year, in aid of raising all important funds for charity.

The expedition, set to take place in September 2024, will see a team of glazing industry professionals take on the climb of their lives, and Alyson is joining the 10-day adventure to scale Kilimanjaro’s 5,895 metre height.

As well as raising money for Kelly’s Heroes – the charity that raises vital awareness and funds to

provide support to those suffering from mental health illnesses –Alyson is also hoping to raise funds for Severn Hospice, the Shropshire-based charity providing free specialist care and support to those living with incurable illnesses.

Alyson talks about the upcoming trek, saying: “When Sarah Ball, from PiG’s, approached me about joining her and the team to climb Kilimanjaro, I couldn’t turn it down! It will definitely be one of the hardest things I have done, both physically and mentally, but I am more than ready for the challenge.

Shines In London Marathon

On 21 April 2024, Epwin Window Systems’ commercial director

Ray McGrady and customer service advisor Tony Lloyd took on the iconic London Marathon course to raise funds for charities close to their hearts.

Ray McGrady said: “It was incredible to be able to join 53,000 runners on the start line. The crowds along the route were amazing and crossing the finish line was a special moment I’ll always remember. It was a privilege to run the event to raise funds for British Heart Foundation. Without their amazing work, my dad wouldn’t

be with us today.”

Tony Lloyd said: “It’s the London Marathon! A marathon is always tough, but all the training paid off on the day. It was an honour to run this world-famous course on behalf of SpecialEffect, who I’m an ambassador for.”

“Kelly’s Heroes and Severn Hospice are two charities that are very close to my heart, so they will be my driving force throughout this entire process, from training all the way to reaching the summit. I’ve had so many lovely messages and gestures of support from my Framexpress team, it’s made it all seem so real now – bring on September!” Alyson adds.

Stuart Green, joint managing director at Framexpress, says: “All of us here at Framexpress are rooting for Alyson as she prepares for the climb, and we’ll be supporting her all the way. We are no stranger to raising funds for charity, and we have all done our fair share of fundraising over the years, but Alyson is definitely trumping us all with the most impressive challenge yet, and we have no doubt she’ll be able to do it.”
