Order Book To Warmseal No Deal Brexit
A Danger To Jobs,
Growth And
The Economy
Responding to the release of the Department for Exiting the European Union (DEXEU) assessment of the economic impact of Brexit, Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) National Chairman Mike Cherry, said: “These figures paint a stark picture of the impact a no deal Brexit will have on the economy and suggest what many have been warning about.
“Put simply, a chaotic no deal Brexit will damage jobs, cut growth and hurt the economy. This cliff edge will disproportionately be felt by our smaller businesses that do not have the same capacity or resources as big businesses to make adequate contingency plans to soften the impact of this scenario or to deal with the costs of suddenly trading on the basis of WTO rules from April 2019 and having to complete customs declarations. “With only one in seven small firms planning for this extreme outcome, it represents a clear and present threat. With time ticking ever faster, our smaller businesses need support and advice to start planning. The Government can help with this by following the lead of Ireland and Netherlands and issuing Brexit advice vouchers or considering other forms of financial and non-financial support that small firms can use to help prepare.” www.fsb.org.uk
The following statement has been taken from the Armstrong Watson website: Further to the appointment of Robert Adamson, Mike Kienlen and Mark Ranson as Joint Administrators of Niamac Developments Limited (formerly trading as SafeGlaze UK) on 30 October 2018, the Joint Administrators are pleased to announce that they have agreed a sale of the order book to Warmseal Newcastle Limited (“Warmseal”). Warmseal have been a household name and market leader in the North East for around 26 years. Discussing the sale, Robert Adamson said,

“This deal will ensure that customers of the Company, the majority of whom have paid a deposit without having any reassurance that work will be done, will now have the opportunity to have the work they ordered completed by Warmseal.” Steve Miller, Director of Warmseal, said, “We are delighted to confirm we have acquired the order book that existed at the time Niamac Developments Ltd went into administration. This news should reassure customers that have placed orders and we will be making contact with them as a matter of priority to discuss and book in their installations.”

collapse of Carillion. Infrastructure, traditionally one of the two largest sectors alongside residential, saw an increase in contract value by 6.9 per cent taking its monthly total to £1.3 billion. However commercial & retail, hotel, leisure & sport, industrial and education construction sectors all saw decreases across the month.
The latest edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI highlights levels of construction contract values awarded across Great Britain. The largest project in October was the £350 million Keadby 2 Power Station (see figure 1.1), over three times the value of the second largest project on the month. With three of the top five largest projects in October based
Commenting on the figures, Michael Dall, Lead Economist at Barbour ABI, said: “There is no doubt that the strength of housebuilding is substantially helping improve the overall figures for the construction industry. With a shortage of homes across Great Britain and an influx of buyers helped by schemes such as help-to-buy has propelled the sector and kept developers busy to keep up increasing expectations to build more homes. Nevertheless, as Brexit continues to be discussed and negotiated, the lack of clarity on the matter for the remaining sectors seems to have influenced the total amount and value of contracts.”
Contracts Worth The value of new construction contracts in October reached £5.4 billion, a 3.8 per cent decrease compared to September, as housebuilding continues to prop up the industry with £2 billion worth of contract value.
in London, this greatly helped the capital account for the largest share of contracts awarded within the month, with a total of 17.2 per cent, followed by the North West and Yorkshire & Humberside with 16.6 and 16.1 per cent respectively. Across the construction sector in October, medical and health projects reached £250 million, its best month statistically for more than two years and a 230 per cent increase on September. 91 per cent of these projects were for public hospitals, such as the £90 million contract awarded to Laing O’Rourke to finish the Royal Liverpool Hospital redevelopment after the

GGF Responds To Safeglaze Closure Following the announcement of Safeglaze going into administration, Kevin Buckley, Group Chief Executive of the Glass and Glazing Federation, has issued a statement to clarify that Safeglaze was not in any way connected to the GGF and/or its group of commercial companies and to underline the importance of consumer protection when administration or liquidation occurs.
It is always unfortunate to witness the failure of any business within the glass and glazing industry – and doubly so when it is the closure of a large, high-profile business such as Safeglaze. Even though Safeglaze was neither a GGF Member nor a FENSA registered company, the GGF Group still sympathize with the individuals who may have been affected including; employees who have lost their jobs, suppliers who may have suffered financially and homeowners who have possibly been left without any deposit protection or insurance backed guarantees. Recent media coverage would indicate that a number of current and future Safeglaze customers are in a state of confusion and are concerned as to where they stand with regards to their guarantees, paid deposits and incomplete installations. We understand that Safeglaze was part of other trade organisations and we hope their customers will be protected and supported through this catastrophic period. As the leading trade association to the glazing industry, the GGF appreciates that economic uncertainty can affect businesses both large and small. The GGF and its commercial companies, often meet with Members and clients to listen
Kevin Buckely GGF CEO
to their concerns and to offer help where possible, to ensure they continue to run their businesses effectively. It is important to mention our unrivalled support to thousands of companies connected to the GGF Group. The examples below underline our commitment to consumer facing companies. • All GGF Member installers have been trading for a minimum of 3 years – there are no phoenix companies in the GGF. • All GGF Members and FENSA registered companies have been vetted and have premises, products and employees fit for purpose. • GGF consumer facing companies comply with the GGF Consumer Code of Practice, which is approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute and has strict requirements regarding the conduct of Member companies ensuring they comply with all relevant consumer legislation. • Homeowners using GGF Members have free access to the GGF Conciliation Service in the unlikely event of a dispute with a GGF Member company. • The Glazing Arbitration Scheme (TGAS) is also in place to help GGF Members and FENSA companies reach resolutions with homeowners.
6 WINDOW NEWS NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2018
• All GGF Members and FENSA registered companies must offer their customers a warranty insurance policy (insurance backed guarantees) to protect the homeowner in the event that the installation company fails. • The GGF Members offer homeowners free automatic deposit protection using the GGF Deposit Indemnity Fund which was set up in 1981 and is now the industry’s best deposit protection safeguarding deposits and instalments of up to 50% of the contract value or £12,500 (whichever is lesser). • All FENSA and GGF installers are trained to MTC (Minimum Technical Competency) level to ensure installations are fitted to the standards set in Building Regulations. These are just some of the main benefits offered by GGF Members and FENSA companies that clearly demonstrate the value of homeowner protection. We advise all homeowners looking to have glazing work carried out at their home, to thoroughly check the credentials of any firm they are looking to employ and to check what (if any) trade bodies they are registered with. We also recommend that homeowners make sure they are using a recognised Competent Person Scheme such as FENSA and to obtain protection for both guarantees and any deposits paid, to ensure they are protected, should the worst happen. In the meantime, in order to determine the best avenue for recourse and raise any concerns regarding the closure, we advise Safeglaze customers to contact the relevant associations/schemes to whom Safeglaze were affiliated with and used to offer their customers protection. Kestrel Reaches ‘Gold’ Standard For Sixth
Year In A Row
Kestrel has proved that sustainable sourcing is at the heart of its business after achieving the BES 6001 for the sixth year running.
Garner Holdings Buys Sheerframe Trade Extrusion
Garner Holdings, owned by Roger Hartshorn, has purchased the former Sheerframe trade extrusion business from Synseal. This sale only affects the Trade Extrusion, including Hometrim Cellular Foam and Sheerline fencing & decking products. The Sheerframe window systems business and the Masterdor business remain owned by the Synseal Group. Roger Hartshorn, is well known in the PVCu extrusion and building products sector, having been involved with HL Plastics since 1977 and an owner since 1988. “In order to build on one of the pioneers of UK PVCu extrusion, and link to its rich heritage, we have renamed the new company LB Plastics Ltd. LB Plastics will continue to operate from the Firs Works site at Nether Heage, next door to Garner Aluminum Extrusions Ltd, a new company formed to be a leading extruder and supplier of aluminum profiles. The new Aluminum plant is being installed in the spring of 2019 and will be commissioned by the end of the summer,” said
Roger Hartshorn.
“The PVCu trade extrusion will be highly complementary to the aluminum profiles that we will look to develop and so it was an obvious fit for my future plans. This will also give the benefit of sharing resources across the single site and offering a total supply of complementary single sourced extrusions and mouldings.” “We plan to expand and invest in new machinery and products in order to restore the site to its former glory.” “The Firs Works site at Nether Heage has been owned by Garner Holdings for over 2 years and also remains home to Masterdor, a Synseal group company and Litchfield Investments Ltd, the privately owned property division, still owned by the Litchfield family.” “This acquisition is a ‘win win’ situation; it gives security to the staff and a springboard to build on for Garner Holdings and its sister company Garner Aluminum Extrusions.”
The accreditation means installers, specifiers and distributors can be sure that Kestrel’s fascias, cladding, soffits and trims meet high standards of sustainability. Kestrel sales and marketing director Owen Thorogood said: “Kestrel has held BES 6001 since 2012. “It’s a true ‘gold standard’ in sustainability and showstus our customers that they are buying the best, not just in terms of quality fascia, cladding and roofline products, but in our supply chain and manufacturing process.” The BES 6001 standard scores Kestrel for issues such as material traceability, business ethos, health and safety and waste management within its supply chain. In order to keep the accreditation, Kestrel faces an independent audit every 12 months, and this year managed to improve its score. Owen added: “While we are proud of having the BES 6001, we are also committed to improving wherever we can. “This increased score shows that we are working with a reliable and even more sustainable supply chain of companies that hold themselves to the same high standards as Kestrel.”

Capitalising On Solid Roof Trends
With LEKA
Reading’s Homeview Windows started working with LEKA Roof Systems over two years ago and installs the LEKA Warm Roof and the LEKA Orangery Roof. Colin Stichbury, Director of Homeview says: “The solid roof market is really picking up and we have three teams of fitters dedicated to installing LEKA roofs.”
Colin commented: “I liked the idea of a product that used GRP not aluminium.” The unique GRP construction of the LEKA Warm Roof and the LEKA Orangery Roof contribute to a wealth of advantages, claims the company. It means no wood worm or moisture absorption, no condensation and no thermal bridging. It also means the roof is exceptionally lightweight, typically weighing within 30-40kg of a traditional glass conservatory roof so in most cases existing conservatory frames are able to take the weight of the new LEKA roofing system without needing additional reinforcement. As well as offering an innovative construction, Colin says LEKA products are perfect for tapping into today’s design trends. “They are ideal for both retro fit and new build projects,” he says. “The tile effect roof of the LEKA Warm Roof means a conservatory can be made to look like a traditional extension while the LEKA Orangery Roof creates a very design-led look.” www.lekasystems.co.uk

As the trade association for the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry in the UK, the BWF provides a voice for the sector in the UK, influencing policy, regulations and standards. During that time he has been instrumental in raising the profile of the woodworking sector and highlighting how it can support the construction economy. “I have a great deal of admiration for the work of the British Woodworking Federation and the considerable strides it has made in the past decade in becoming the sole major trade body of the woodworking industry with a clear vision for the future,” said Andrew. “I look forward to taking on a more active role in the strategic direction of the woodworking industry, building on the excellent work of those within the Board and its Executive team.” The appointment was formalised at the BWF’s yearly AGM on June 12th at the Hellicon Gardens Hotel in Leicestershire Helen Hewitt, Acting Chief Executive Officer for the BWF, said: “Andrew has shown great drive and commitment to furthering the use of British joinery as a durable, sustainable and innovative

TuffX Expands Manufacturing Facility
Following impressive growth and as part of a longterm strategy to increase production capacity, glass processing specialist, TuffX, has announced that it has expanded its Knowsley manufacturing facility. The Merseyside based company has recently taken on an additional 20,000ft2 unit, that adjoins its existing 55,000ft2 factory, creating an impressive 75,000ft2 space dedicated to quality glass manufacture. This extra space will house one of the company’s three laminating lines alongside a third, additional glass cutting line, a second digital printing machine and a new state of the art Bovone ELB 12 HS straight line edging machine. The £200,000 Bovone straight line edger is the second machine of its type at TuffX and is designed to produce flat and arisse profile. Capable of processing four metres of glass a minute, it will allow TuffX to stay ahead of anticipated future demand by producing a greater volume of product, while still retaining a market leading quality of finish. As well as the new machinery and additional laminating and cutting lines, the expanded factory will also enable TuffX to optimise the layout of its existing facilities, not to mention create space for more glass cutting equipment in the near future.
TuffX Operations Director, John Tierney, commented: “The addition of almost 50 per cent more space is fantastic news for TuffX as not only does it allow us to house new machinery, but it gives us the perfect opportunity to re-organise the current factory layout so that we can be as efficient as possible. We’ve been gearing up for growth and we now have the infrastructure in place to be able to deliver on expected demand going forward.” Managing Director, Graham Price, added: “TuffX has enjoyed a period of strong growth, and we’re looking forward to even more in the long term so the new and improved factory marks yet another important development for us. It’s not just about increased volume, he concluded. “The company has built an enviable reputation for service over the years and the investments we are making now will allow us to continue that tradition with new and existing customers.” www.tuffxglass.co.uk
Distinction Doors Resumes
Sale Of GRP Fire Doors Distinction Doors has confirmed that sales of both its GRP fire door blanks and prepped fire doors have now resumed, following the self-imposed industry-wide ban which resulted from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry investigations and subsequent bi-lateral fire door testing initiated by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). In order to comply with new government expectations of GRP fire doors, any fire door manufacturer now looking to recommence supply must have primary test
evidence illustrating that their door has passed a fire test from both sides, as well as written confirmation from the relevant test house confirming this result. Additionally, it is expected that before resuming the manufacture of fire doors a director from the door manufacturer should write a confirmation to the supplier of the door blank, enclosing the successful bi-directional test evidence which confirms the door sets they intend to manufacture and supply will use only the exact components noted within the door sets tests.
10 WINDOW NEWS NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2018
Distinction Doors CEO, Andrew Fowlds commented: “It has been incredibly encouraging to see how well our industry has come together throughout this uncertain period and continues to do so as the Association of Composite Door Manufacturers (ACDM) carries on working with the MHCLG to now address the wider issues associated with the recent fire door changes. We are pleased that a resolution has been found which addresses those concerns originally outlined by the MHCLG tests, allowing the industry to go back to market and Distinction Doors to reinstate GRP fire doors as part of our own comprehensive offering.” www.distinctiondoors.co.uk

Eyes Further
Growth In 2019
Virtuoso Doors has laid the foundations for a strong 2019 with the announcement that it is on target to achieve year on year growth of over 50%, making 2018 the best year ever in the firm’s 37-year history.
Virtuoso Doors’ record streak has seen production rates accelerate during the last 12 months – all culminating in the company turning in a record-breaking month in October where sales were more than
double those of October 2017. Tony Craggs, managing director of Virtuoso Doors, explains: “2018 has been a historic year for the business and we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished. Our record-breaking month eclipsed every single other month in 37 years of trading – it’s a genuine highlight for us because it shows our customers just what we’re capable of. We’ve developed a winning package
The cornerstone of Virtuoso Doors growth however is new product development and the firm has credited much of its recent success to Virtu-AL – the ultra-modern aluminium textured, non-woodgrain finish composite door – and its newly launched aluminium outer frame. Virtuoso was the UK’s first composite door manufacturer to create an aluminium alternative composite door and the first to offer an aluminium frame for all of its composite doors, says the company. A growing consumer appetite for aluminium has driven demand of Virtu-AL and the aluminium outer frame. Virtu-AL is already in the top 5% of door styles sold by Virtuoso, making it one of the firm’s best sellers. “Virtu-AL has been a runaway success for us and the new aluminium frame complements it perfectly,” Tony adds. “These two products give installers a vital point of difference to stand out from the competition and they have both contributed to our terrific success this year. We’re not content to stand still though and there will be plenty more innovations to come from Virtuoso in 2019 – it’s going to be another big year for us!” To find out more about Virtu-AL or the full Virtuoso range visit www.virtuoso-doors.co.uk

Quickslide Come Top Of The Quality Audit Class Businesses from across the fenestration industry will be familiar with the efforts required to achieve top marks in a Quality Systems Audit. In a benchmarking process that continually reviews in-house procedures, Yorkshire-based manufacturer Quickslide have undertaken their assessment under the guidance of auditor CENSolutions Ltd., for the second time this year, passing with flying colours. Compliance with a number of requisites is compulsory for all manufacturers; the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) setting down standards including BS EN 14351 for windows and pedestrian door sets, and PAS 24:2016 which relates to the level of security applied to windows and doors on ‘New Build’ sites. Applying this level of scrutiny to a further, optional certification is not something every business is
willing to do.
Ben Weber, Managing Director at Quickslide explained the importance of the audit for Quickslide: “The fenestration market is competitive and so we wanted to find a way of sticking our heads above the parapet and telling our customers that we’re serious about providing a consistently superior service. CENSolutions visit us for two days, during which time our policies, procedures and manufacturing operation are really put through their paces. Our aluminium frame department’s processes & procedures were pushed to the limits, and we’re pleased to say that we’ve received 100% pass rate for a third time. “Additionally, 43,578 new homes were registered with the National House Building Council for the

quarter July to September 2018; 2,917 of those in Yorkshire and Humberside. Gaining the CENSolutions Third Party Certification positions us well to tender for new build contracts, and contribute to building quality, environmentally friendly homes. Auditor Paul Scrivener, an Independent Agent for CENSolutions undertook Quickslide’s review, commenting: “In my dealings with Quickslide over the past few years I can see that it is a business which strives to improve the quality of their products and manufacturing processes. The internal systems and procedures they have implemented ensure that they record any manufacturing faults, non-conformance reports or customer complaints. All faults, complaints, or non-conformance reports are then assessed during regular meetings and preventive action is implemented. The recording of these type of errors are part of the quality system in-line with clause 7.3 of EN 14351, however, Quickslide are one of my top clients in controlling these; the internal systems they’ve implemented go even beyond CENSolutions requirements.”

Stocked And Ready
At a time when orders are flooding in to get work finished by Christmas, suppliers may struggle to keep up with demand. This will not be the case for leading composite door manufacturer, DOORCO Ltd, as they announce that they have been actively increasing stock levels to ensure they will be fully stocked throughout December, and ready to deliver when the doors open for 2019. “One of the most important factors in any supply chain is stock. If you don’t hold good stock levels, you can’t deliver on any other of your service promises,” says Adam Sullivan, DOORCO’s Warehouse Manager. “For DOORCO, our 99% stock promise is the first point in our Customer Charter. Throughout the year we have been delivering prepped doors 98.3% OTIF, as well as servicing the distribution side of the business which has grown by 55%. But, as we head into December we know that orders will start flooding in as fabricator and installer customers are looking to get jobs signed off before Christmas. At a time of year when stock gets typically diminished, we’ve decided to do the opposite and ramp our UK stock levels and scheduled deliveries from DOORCO
Korea and other partners, to ensure we are ready and waiting for the final push of 2018. “Equally as important to us is that we don’t start January with diminished stock. Our customers want to hit the ground running in 2019, and we not only want to be right beside them, but one step ahead. So, whether single, mixed pallet or prepped door, we aim to have it in stock for quick delivery from the first working day in January. “Our Customer Charter is there for a reason. DOORCO customers need to know they can have what they need, when they want it, and it all starts with making sure the product is available in the first place. Making this extra investment in stock levels at this critical time of year is imperative to continuing to deliver the outstanding service our customers have come to expect from DOORCO, without exception.” All product information is readily available on DOORCO’s website: www.door-co.com

Available on standard turnaround of just 5 days, the Heritage Flush Casement is said by the company to be a perfect alternative to traditional timber windows and takes CentralRPL another step closer to being a true one-stop-shop for installers across the UK. “When looking to renovate a more traditional property, it’s not easy to find a PVC-U product that truly mimics the appearance of traditional wooden sash windows and often means our installer customers will steer away from these types of projects,” says Martyn Elwell, CentralRPL’s Sales Director. “The Heritage Flush Casement is set to change that. By studying the appearance of a traditional window frame and its proportions and sightlines, Optima has designed the system to replicate them perfectly. We offer the Heritage Flush Casement with standard welded corners, with seamless, almost invisible, welds and also a fully
mechanical version that provide the clean, modern look you get from engineered timber. We also offer triple seals for enhanced efficiency. “We can now supply our customers with a PVC-U product that not only offers a like-for-like replacement that will maintain the character of a traditional property, but also provides the homeowner with all the benefits associated with PVC-U. Suffer no more the draughts or painted shut windows that many homeowners live with unnecessarily, and no secondary glazing required! “The market for the Heritage Flush Casement doesn’t stop there. In modern buildings, the system takes on a very contemporary edge, especially when coloured in grey and furnished with modern hardware. In fact, the window looks great in any property from a modern town house to a traditional cottage. Adding to this, the Central Inspired colour range, which offers the option of pretty much any colour the customer requires, on

a short lead time compliments the Heritage Sash perfectly and gives our customers the competitive edge to win even more projects, on even more property styles. “The Heritage Flush Casement was one of the main drivers for making a full a system move to Optima last year. While we’ve been offering the range for some time now, we wanted to get the basics right before adding the more sophisticated products into the manufacturing mix. “Service is everything to CentralRPL and there was no way we could jeopardise this by jumping in head first manufacturing the entire suite of products. We are delighted that we are now ready to deliver this much anticipated product as part of our standard window range. Everything we do at CentralRPL is focused on becoming a true one-stop-shop for our installer customers and the Heritage Flush Casement takes us another step closer to achieving this. “We’ll be showcasing the Heritage Flush Casement at FIT 2019” For more information on the full range of PVC-U window and door products and the service you can expect from CentralRPL, visit: www.centralrpl.co.uk.

Certass: ‘Why Does The Industry Need A Modern Trade Association?’ It’s time for the glazing industry to have a modern, engaging trade association that does what a trade association is supposed to do – according to Jon Vanstone, Chair of Certass Trade Association. He explains: “Trade associations have a crucial role to play in improving the perception of an industry. As well as helping installers improve their professionalism with practical business advice and training, it’s their job to be the representative voice for the industry at Government level. “By talking to local installers and getting their views on the indus-
try, we knew that there was an opportunity to introduce a membership body that gave everyone the chance to have their say, from small installers with one fitting team, right up to the largest glazing systems companies. Installers told us there was a lack of advice and information from the wider industry, that’s why we launched Certass Trade Association (CTA). “It’s already proving a success and we have attracted some great support from the industry who are happy to see a new membership body emerge that isn’t all about making big bucks for the select few. Wage Increases
And Underinvestment
In Automation A ‘Ticking Time Bomb’ For UK Window And Glass Industry Promac Group has warned that heading into the new year, the UK window industry faces a perfect storm of wage inflation and declining availability of labour. Figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in October, reveal that wages were 3.1% up in the three months ending in August, on the same time last year, representing the largest average wage increase since the 2008 economic collapse. Combined with a significant fall in net migration and record rates of employment, alongside under-investment in infrastructure, the machinery specialist has warned that fabricators and glass processors could face spiraling labour costs, going into 2019. Joe Hague, Managing Director, Promac Group Joe Hague, Managing Director, Promac Group, said: “If you look at the economy right now – at what’s happening in the labour market and where we are as an industry, there are some serious challenges on the horizon. “While some fabricators have and continue to invest in automation of process, many others have relied on cheap labour to grow. It doesn’t take a genius to see that that over-reliance, represents a significant threat to the long term future of those business at a time when labour is, according to official statistics, in increasingly short
pean countries including Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. “If you’re putting on 3.1% on your wage bill you simply cannot hope to keep a lid on manufacturing costs”, continued Joe. “It’s simply not sustainable – you have to take out labour costs.” Earlier this year the ONS reported that UK productivity fell by 0.4% in the final quarter of last year, continuing to lag behind rates achieved before the 2008 economic crash and lagging far behind that of other European countries. This was something highlighted in a new report by the McKinsey Global Institute in its report published September. This found that with comparatively low employment costs businesses and manufacturers have become over-reliant on labour.

in supply.”
This it said, meant that the uptake of advanced manufacturing technologies and automation, in the UK now lagged 23% behind that of Germany.
The UK employment rate is currently at a record high of 75.6% with 32.39million people in work. According to the ONS, it puts the unemployment rate at just 4.2% – down 0.4% since last year.
Promac Group supplies the UK’s most extensive range of PVC-U, aluminium and glass processing machinery. Representing amongst others, Forel, FOM-GS Group, BDM, and Urban.
This has led to a squeeze on labour market with the so-called ‘Brexodus’ leading to the lowest level of net migration in the last six-years.
“Whatever your standpoint on Brexit, we have to make a fist of it. There is, however, a real case now to make for investment in automation of process”, said Joe.
The difference between the number of EU citizens entering the UK and the number leaving sank to 87,000 in the year to March, its lowest level since the year to December 2012, according to ONS figures.
“It takes out labour costs at a time when those costs can be expected to be increase – but it also delivers much more, driving efficiencies, innovation and far better but also more consistent quality, driving productivity as a foundation for growth.
This according to the ONS is driven by both a decline in EU arrivals and an increase in EU citizens emigrating from the UK and a fall in migration from Eastern Euro-

VIEWPOINT According to the latest available figures from the GGF, while the number of reported accidents in the glass industry showed a 12% drop year-on-year from 2015 to 2016, the percentage of these that involved manual handling injuries increased from 17% to 20%.

Tougher Sentences
For Companies Who Fail To Protect Workers – Warning Companies who are found to have failed to protect their workforce face far tougher sentencing from this month.
New sentencing guidance gives courts in England and Wales new powers to hand down far tougher penalties to employers found guilty of manslaughter through gross negligence – including up to 18 years jail time. The weight of the sentences handed out will be defined by a wider assessment of company culture and attitude towards health and safety – not simply with respect to a single incident. Those companies who are unable to demonstrate their commitment to employee welfare facing the most severe sentences. “It’s ultimately about culpability”, says Dave Broxton, Managing Director Bohle. “If as an employer, you’ve shown total disregard for the health and safety of staff, the sentence handed down to you will be far more severe than that to a company where ‘the worst’ has
happened despite its best efforts.
“The first point is that health and safety should be a priority for all of us, so that ‘the worst’ doesn’t happen, but if it does, as an employer, you need to be certain that you had the appropriate controls and systems in place to prevent an incident and that staff are fully trained and equipped.” The new powers follow the publication of new and comprehensive guidelines by the Sentencing Council in the summer outlining the penalties employers can expect to receive for a host of offences from covering up an assault in the workplace to a fatality caused by negligence. The sentencing body said that defendants found guilty in gross negligence cases – where, for example, an employer’s long-standing and serious disregard for the safety of employees, motivated by cost-cutting, has led to someone being killed – will see the most punitive sentences.
“Manual handling injuries might not necessarily lead to a fatality (although it’s always possible that they could). If, however, you have a series of manual handling incidents behind you, or anything else for that matter, where it could be interpreted that you had failed to provide the right equipment or PPE, it would count against you under the new sentencing laws”, says Broxton. Bohle’s range of Veribor suction lifters is at the forefront of manual handling technology and has been refined over decades to make the manual handling of glass safer. This includes testing by TÜV and the subsequent accreditation, the TÜV GS mark is an independent guarantee of performance. This includes Veribor blue line pump-activated suction lifters. Designed to support the safe manual handling of glass, stoneware and metal, the 601.1BL has a parallel load capacity of up to 120kg and features a high visibility pressure gage, which gives a clear indication of the strength of the vacuum and suitability for lifting. “There is an inevitable element of risk in working with glass. The right processes combined with the right equipment and tools for the job allow us to minimise those risks”, added Broxton. “We offer the UK’s most comprehensive range of PPE equipment alongside the leading Veribor suction lifter range. “These are tools to prevent injury – the safety of workers, rather than the change in sentencing should be all the motivation anyone needs to invest in them.” www.bohle.com

VIEWPOINT successful housing strategy is not just about increasing supply. The fund now stands at £5.5bn, yet there was still no mention of an allocation to ensure that essential fire safety works required in existing social houses are paid for. So the question still remains as to who will foot the bill.
Budget Helen Hewitt, CEO, British Woodworking Federation (BWF) gives her response to the recent announcement of the autumn budget.
Response “We were pleased to see some positive measures which will help smaller businesses offer apprenticeships. The £695m initiative to reduce the cost of apprenticeship training for small businesses will halve the amount they have to contribute from 10% to 5%. UK’s SMEs are pivotal to the success of the apprenticeship scheme and this should go some way to resolving the growing skills gap in our sector and to help boost productivity. “Delivering a solution to end the UK’s housing crisis has long been
on the political agenda and so we welcomed the Chancellor’s promise of a further £500m for the housing infrastructure fund to help build a further 650,000 homes. In addition, he pointed to strategic partnerships with 9 housing associations to “deliver 13,000 homes across England, up to £1bn pounds of British business bank guarantees, to support the revival of SME house builders.” On the surface, tapping into the potential of SME house builders to increase housing stock is a smart move. However, as we pointed out following the Spring statement, a

“In more good news for house building, the importance of investing in our high streets with a £675 million Future High Streets Fund to allow councils to rejuvenate town centres could lead to benefits for members. With the Federation of Master Builders estimating last year that as many as 300,000 to 400,000 new homes alone could be created by making use of empty spaces above shops on our high streets, the Future High Streets Fund could be a further boost for residential accommodation. “The Chancellor pledged to publish a full response into the review of build out rates by Sir Oliver Letwin which concluded that large housebuilders are not engaged in ‘systematic speculative land banking’. We welcome any move to reduce bureaucracy in the planning system and look forward to the Governments response to the recommendations. “The collapse of Carillion left many wondering what the impact on subcontractors would be and called for a review of public sector construction contracts. Some clarity came yesterday when it was announced that public private partnerships will soon be no more with PFI and PF2 contracts abolished. Existing contracts under the PFI and PF2 system will be honoured but no new ones will be signed and a “centre of excellence” will be set up to manage the remaining contracts, worth approximately £200bn. However, more clarity is still required around how a new model will work to ensure that the infrastructure this country requires continues to be built.” www.bwf.org.uk

Roto brings trade media to Austria
for International Press Day
Roto Group held its International Press Day in Graz, Austria in November. The German hardware manufacturer previewed new technology and outlined plans for business under its new corporate structure. The event began with a tour of the facility in Kalsdorf bei Graz,
a site that recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. Inside, visitors saw the modern technology, including a brand new €2.5 million powder coating facility that Roto uses to manufacture over 20 million components annually at this location alone.

At the press conference, the management team reported that demand for the new Roto NX Tilt&Turn system had risen much quicker than expected, necessitating investment in new production machines. A significant announcement is a new hardware surface coating, known as RotoSil Level 6, with the claim that it is the most advanced in the industry. The presentation outlined how the new formulation had undergone extreme climate testing. Its introduction to all product groups will begin during 2019. CFO Michael Stangier projected a 2018 year end Group turnover of €660 million, around 5 percent up last year’s figure. Roto is aiming to increase turnover by 3 to 5 percent during 2019.

CEO Dr Eckhard Keill presented his view of international markets. His overall message was that unpredictable political situations are having a detrimental effect on the growth of the construction sector in many regions. He noted excellent growth in North America and progress in Argentina, Chile and Mexico but continued market depression in Brazil, where Roto owns the Fermax hardware brand. There was subdued growth in China, but the market in Russia remains “extremely unstable”, he said. As for Europe, the construction sector was projected to grow by 2.5 percent, less impressive than the 3.9 percent last year. Dr Christian Faden, who will run the new company division, Roto
Two new Roof Window products, the Designo R6 and R8 Quadro, were also presented. These PVC models are claimed by Roto to be the best in class and designed with ease of installation in mind.

Professional Service, explained how the company’s ambition is to become a service provider in the area of maintenance and upgrading of windows and doors. There is however no plan to expand this service outside of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the foreseeable future.
The event ended with a practical demonstration of the burglary inhibition of the Roto TiltSafe mechanism. Operatives using crowbars and other tools showed how a window locked open in tilt mode could still resist attack for several minutes. They were unable to break or disengage the TiltSafe retaining components holding the sash in place. It certainly illustrated why this aspect of the Roto NX system has attracted so much interest. http://www.roto-frank.com/gb/

DEAR GERALD
Dear
Gerald Dear Gerald Since publishing our door furniture performance and warranty research in May, installers have told us about the true cost of product failure which is tarnishing reputations as well as furniture. The door furniture ‘credit on return’ policies, where a credit for the rotting component is paid only when the faulty product is brought back from site, packaged and shipped off to the supplier for inspection. This is a contributor of why 77.5% reported they are unhappy with how these warranty issues are handled. Customers tell us the return processes are so convoluted that in many cases they simply don’t bother returning the item. They pay the supplier 34 WINDOW NEWS NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2018
of the faulty product for another one and fit the same again! The real cost to installers is taking the complaint from the homeowner, returning to site, ordering replacement products and then going back to make good a fault not of their making. But the cost is far greater than the hours and fuel, it’s the alternative cost of what they could have earned whilst servicing their suppliers warranty promise. Head Offices then don’t see the magnitude of a problem. If their return processes are so tortuous that products don’t get returned, they could be peddling the same product for 30 years without thinking there is a need to improve. This is why we created The Sweet Guarantee. If it pits, we handle it directly. A fit and forget, don’t involve yourself guarantee, supported with test data of 33 times the required standard at 8000+ hours in a salt spray chamber and still no reported issues. Yours sincerely Nick Dutton CEO Brisant Secure
Dear Gerald In our role as the industry’s consumer protection champion, DGCOS is often asked by its members about issues surrounding the Consumer Contract Regulations, and as such wanted to take the opportunity to remind the broader market about the routes to compliance. Thanks to our considerable experience of working with our members, we’re in a great position to able to advise on how businesses can best comply with the legislation and avoid both hefty fines and consumers’ use of loopholes to cancel orders.
DEAR GERALD
Most of us will remember the hubbub when the Consumer Contract Regulations (CCR) came into force in June 2014. They covered all the “information requirements” an installation company needs to provide at, or before an order is placed to ensure that the contract complies with the Regulations. Significantly, the CCR also brought in new cancellation rights as part of harmonisation of such rights under the EU Consumer Rights Directive.
These are the kind of questions that DGCOS encounters every day, and in our role to protect both consumers and installers, we want to ensure that everyone has the correct information and is doing the right thing. If installers are unsure or are unable to answer any of the above points, I advise them to check out a full article on the issue that we’ve prepared at www.dgcos.org.uk/news
Over the past four years, DGCOS has seen many different terms and conditions in the contracts of glazing installation companies and we’ve been surprised at how many contracts still do not comply. We want to alert installers to the keys areas they need to be aware of:
Director of Policy, DGCOS
Adrian Simpson,
Do installers know about the different cancellation periods for sales off-premises, on-premises, or distance sales? Are they aware that most of the door and window products they sell are considered as being made directly to the consumer’s specification and what the implications of this is in terms of cancellation options? Do installers make it clear in their contracts that their products are ‘made to measure’? What does their cancellation form look like? Failure to provide details of a consumer’s right to cancel is a criminal offence. At what point do installers provide the consumer with information about the delivery period? Most installers probably give a guarantee against defective materials and workmanship but the point at which they provide this information to the consumer is critical to comply with CCR.
If you want to get involved in the discussion, or would like to air your views on a particular industry subject, then Email me at gerald@windownews.co.uk We cannot guarantee that we will publish everything, but we will do our utmost to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. Your views and thoughts are imprortant to us. WINDOW NEWS NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2018 35

As the Federation’s first Standards Committee Secretary, John was a stalwart who developed the GGF’s Technical Department and helped develop many of the early standards in the industry. In the late 80s, John was instrumental in helping the UK to Harmonise Standards within the European Union.

Secure Smart
Standards The new TS621:2018 standard, created by the Door and Hardware Federation, has been adopted as the recognised standard for smart locks by the British Standard Institute (BSI), and has received the coveted Kitemark status.
The Conexis® L1 from Yale is the first ever smart lock to adhere to the new standard, says Yale, undergoing rigorous testing in terms of quality, durability, as well as both mechanical and electronic attack testing. In order to comply with the new standard, smart locks must meet mechanical security requirements, as per traditional British Standard locks. These
tests include the PAS24:2016 attack testing and the TS007 3-star cylinder attack test.
For added safety, British Standard smart locks also require a mechanical release on the inside of the door, that doesn’t require electronics, to ensure an easy escape in the event of a fire. The new electro-mechanical part of the standard requires the smart lock to be attacked by MLA locksmiths, to ensure it cannot be manipulated and compromise the security of the lock. Finally, the electronic hacking tests are designed to test the

electronic security of the lock to ensure it is secure against all relevant hacking methods. This standard will provide consumers with the much-needed reassurance that smart locks are now recognised by the British Standards Institute and will be easily identified by the trusted Kitemark symbol. Josh Waites, smart locks product manager for Yale, explains: “We are very proud that the Conexis® L1 is the first ever smart lock to receive Kitemark status, making it an unrivalled product within the current smart lock market. “The new standard will provide homeowners with the peace of mind that they can enjoy the convenience and lifestyle benefits of a smart lock, without having to compromise on the safety and security of their home in any way.” www.yale.co.uk

Innovative SecuriFold and CentreFold folding handles from VBH’s greenteQ Clearline range are growing in popularity among aluminium and PVC-U fabricators due to their unique design. Both products fold down vertically when not in use– a neat feature that is proving appealing for aspirational-style home improvements.
The CentreFold handle stands off the face of the profile by only 15mm, and is designed to work with a Clearspan intermediate door lock on both AluK and Smarts aluminium bi-fold door systems. The handle is part of VBH’s PAS24 spec, and is used by Leeds based Nordic Aluminium on their Clearspan security bi-folds. Nordic regularly supply these bi-folds for new build contracts as they are fully Document Q compliant.
Innovative Folding Handles
SecuriFold has been developed with bi-fold and slide and fold doors in mind. When stacking these types of doors in the open position, sashes don’t fold back neatly due to the projection of the door handle. In contrast, SecuriFold folds snugly against the backplate. Alu-tec, part of the Climatec Group, has recently increased its
orders of SecuriFold handles due to the growing demand. Jenna Harrington at Alu-tec says: “SecuriFold is one of the many inno-

Mighton Broadens Its Sash Security Offering screws, an additional safety feature in itself due to the irregular shape of the screw head. Unlike traditional timber parting beads, its metal components prevent it being levered off with force. It also forms part of a larger SBD (Secured by Design) kit. The Latching Sash Lift is operated from the inside of the property and features a spring-loaded lock, which automatically secures the window on closing. Both products meet the expectations of customers who are looking to modernise their homes, as Chairman of Mighton, Mike Derham explains: “With so much choice available to consumers who are quite literally ‘window shopping’, it is vital that we can provide them with an all round service, which includes options for enhanced security. Timber frame units are a conscious aesthetic investment – now we can match the high quality preferences of our customers with the Mighton Security Range.

These were followed up with further tests delivered in partnership with the Residence Collection over the summer with a series of approvals on top-hung options.
HWL Pioneered Unglazed R9 Window Receives R9 Manufacturing Approvals Approved manufacturing methodologies for R9 will be updated by the Residence Collection to reflect the successful completion of testing on HWL Trade Frames’ pioneering non-glass bonded window. HWL has driven innovation in R9 manufacture through the ground-breaking application of Timberweld® manufacturing technologies. This has given the R9 fabricator an almost unique capability in the UK to butt weld R9 window sashes inside and out, replicating the aesthetic delivered in a traditional 90° mechanical joint. Now – and with extensive independent testing by R9 complete – the system house has confirmed that it is revising its manufacturing manual to in-
clude Timberweld® sash-welding technologies as pioneered by HWL. Mark Haley, Managing Director, HWL Trade Frames, said: “We started supplying R9 unglazed 18-months ago, so it’s been a relatively long road but worth it because of the commercial advantage that it’s allowed us to deliver to our customers. “Manufacture of R9 using Timberweld® means that we can deliver increased weld strength and that eliminates the requirement to glass bond the sash, in the vast majority of installations. “The benefits are immediate. As an installer you can buy your glass from whoever you normally buy your glass from, if a unit needs replacing, you replace it in the same way as you would a

With all of its’ pre-existing customers now buying its nonglass bonded R9 windows, HWL argues installers can cut their installation costs by up to a third by switching from buying in mechanically jointed sashes, to its Timberweld® R9 sash by reducing weight and simplifying handling and installation costs. “We’re talking substantial sums”, continued Mark. “The weight associated with fitting larger glass bonded R9 windows almost always leads to more manpower increasing the fit cost. Taking out the glass, a two-team job becomes just a one team job. “That could deliver savings of around as much as £120 per day or £360 on an average three-day install. If you’re paying per window at say £50 per window you could be looking at £500 back on a three-day fit on an average property with 10 windows and doors – that goes straight back on to your bottom line. “It’s not about taking cost out of the product. It’s about taking it out of installation”, he concludes. www.hwlwindows.co.uk

Aztec Windows Upgrades Customers Using
Timberweld® Technology
It’s All In
The Weld For Vuelta Flush Sash Windows Coventry based PVC-U fabricator, Aztec Windows, is delighted with Timberweld®. Timberweld is a patented method of welding perfect corners to create an authentic timber-look butt-joint effect on both sides of the window, says the company. For many years there was virtually only one way to make PVC-U frames, and that was with 45º angle corner-weld and groove. However, as the popularity of a traditional timber look has grown – particularly with flush sash windows – the question is how can fabricators provide it cost effectively? Michael Hagan, Director of Aztec Windows, comments: “When customers see the alternative to standard windows, they immediately want to upgrade. The timber look was previously used mainly for the heritage market but is now becoming traditional mainstream and much more popular in the general market. “We have been offering flush casements with Timberweld but
have now ordered the machinery to produce composite door outerframes and lipped casements as well as a few more products which we hope to launch in November, giving us the largest range of timber alternative products available. Production has now become second nature to our staff and Timberweld has provided great service throughout,” Michael adds. Alan Burgess, Timberweld MD, explains: “Timberweld creates the appearance of a traditional timber window with a vertical line rather than a 45º angle. This produces an authentic look to the window, both inside and outside, which homeowners love! “As Michael highlights, the timber look has become increasingly popular, and with the right machinery makes producing the frames at scale very cost effective,” Alan concludes. www.timberweld.co.uk
Vuelta by Visage, the new flush sash window from Shepley looks amazing and it’s all in the weld. Visage flush sash gives the appearance of a traditional timber joint on the outside. While it looks hand finished, it has the strength you’d expect from a PVCu weld. “To create Vuelta by Visage, Jade Engineering’s MechWeld combines four milling machines, two for sash and two for frame joints – and a two headed welder. Along with tooling developed for the process, it means we can produce frames that are both beautiful and extremely strong. “It’s not just on the outside, the welded joint is equally impressive on the inside face as it’s almost seamless. We wanted to offer customers the best combination of stunning looks and quality in the Vuelta flush sash window. “The MechWeld system means we can offer Shepley customers the best flush sash window with the consistent high quality and dependable service they need to sell it with confidence.”

Exclusively available on the OW-80 (Premium Window) system, it features what is described as a completely unique internal and external flush casement and a floating mullion, which offers homeowners completely unobstructed views. This means that when homeowners open both the left and right windows, there’s no profile left in the way, therefore providing any property with an effortlessly elegant finish, without relenting on safety. When open, not only does it remove all sightlines, offering unhindered views of the property’s surroundings, but it is also a great
choice for windows that need to meet egress requirements.
Ben Brocklesby, Director at Origin, comments: “Innovation is always high on our agenda. We are constantly looking for new ways of improving the gold standard of service we give to our partners, so we are thrilled to introduce another new product into the Origin Home Range. The addition of the French window, and the fact that it completely removes the sightline between both openers, shows the level of confidence we have in our manufacturing processes and the high grade aluminium we use. Our partners can now offer the end user even more, increasing sales opportunities in the process. We

are really excited about this product, adding to the bespoke options we have already available on our OW-80 system.” With energy efficiency increasingly appearing on homeowners’ and homebuyers’ checklists, the Origin French Window can be upgraded with Aerogel, which has the lowest thermal conductivity of any known solid, says Origin. By using just 10mm of it in the thermal break, it can boost the window’s thermal efficiency by up to 67 percent, deliver a ground-breaking A++ energy rating and result in a certified 0.9 U-Value. The window also combines a polyamide thermal break within the aluminium profile, meaning it not only meets thermal efficiency building regulations, but exceeds them. The attention to performance is matched by high levels of security, as every window is installed with Yale’s highly dependable Encloser Lock, featuring bi-directional locking technology. The French window makes use of the highest grade stainless steel hinges, capable of carrying heavy loads, exceeding way above the stand-

Not only that, it is also available on Origin’s ‘Your Lead Time, Not Ours’ promise, which means that the windows can be delivered in as little as 24-hours, from point of ordering through to installation. This unrivalled service is available on all French windows when specified in one of Origin’s most popular colours. As with all products in the Origin Home Range, the French window is exclusively manufactured in the UK at Origin’s state-of-the-art factory. This allows Origin to maintain the greatest level of control over the process and the unparalleled standards remain in place. An industry-leading guarantee of up to 20-years can be offered as a result, which covers every part that leaves the factory, even the profile, powder-coated finish and weathered seals. Brocklesby concludes: “We never rest on our laurels at Origin. We reinvest heavily in our R&D; striving to be better and support our partners even further. The introduction of the French window, as well as the Origin Slimline Window earlier in the year, shows our commitment to innovate, helping our partners provide the widest range of high-quality products as possible. Midlands fabricator, Frame Fast UK is one of the first companies to offer sash windows manufactured using Jade Engineering’s new MechWeld system. “Over the last 12 months we have been testing the new machines in real factory conditions, and it’s been great,” says Nigel Leivers, Director at Frame Fast. “We had been looking for a solution for our popular Modus flush sash windows, and the new Jade MechWeld Joint solution means we can weld a timber-look joint without the fixings or glue needed to make a mechanical joint.” The MechWeld machine includes tooling specially developed for the process and combines four milling machines – two for sash and two
for frame joints – and a Kombiamatic two-headed welder. “The joints are stronger because we can create a welded mechanical timber joint without fixings or glue. “Frame Fast has worked with Jade Engineering for a long time, which is why we were chosen as part of the testing programme. We are very happy with the results from our MechWeld machine,” adds Nigel. “Flush sash windows are one of the top growth areas for customers looking for PVCu windows because they suit both older properties and new. We offer Eurocell Modus flush sash in a huge range of colours in grained finishes, and with the new welded external joints look like authentic timber.” www.framefastuk.com

Planitherm Network’s Quiet Success Six months after the relaunch of the Planitherm Network by Saint-Gobain Building Glass, one installer in particular is enjoying a “quiet success”. The Planitherm Network is designed to help fabricators and installers to win more business by upselling to homeowners based on the comfort benefits of different types of Planitherm glass such as enhanced security, reduced overheating, noise reduction, energy efficiency and furniture fade protection. Mark Pearce, managing director at KJM Group said: “I was really impressed with the marketing material and website available to Planitherm Network members and it has helped me to explain the benefits of the different types of glass to my customers in plain English. One recent example has been a customer who lives on a
busy road and on the Heathrow flight path, so noise was a big problem. “We were contacted to provide a quotation for secondary glazing for the main bedrooms via email. A price was sent for 8.8mm SGG acoustic secondary glazing plus a quotation for one small new primary window with Comfort Plus glass. This was duly accepted, and a survey arranged. Whilst there we advised that the existing windows were in poor condition as they were leaking sound and air. The secondary was installed, and an order placed for new primary windows with Comfort Plus glass. These have been installed and the outcome beyond the customer’s belief. They have since placed an order for more windows with Comfort Plus. Silence is golden!”

Kirsty Pamment, Market Manager – Residential, Saint-Gobain Building Glass UK & Ireland, said: “The Planitherm range is now available in three options: Energy Standard for maximum energy efficiency; Comfort, which also offers enhanced security, noise reduction and furniture fade protection; and Comfort Plus for all these benefits plus solar control for sunny rooms. It’s all about using language that the consumer will understand so that they choose the right option for them. The three-option range simplifies the conversations yet highlights the fact that choosing the right type of glass will have a huge impact on the performance of your windows. “A key benefit of the Planitherm Network is the wealth of information on the website and access to sales and marketing tools to help fabricators and installers to start having different conversations with their customers and choose the right glass to meet their changing needs.” saint-gobain-building-glass.com

light transmission and a lower reflection. The thermal insulation performance of Guardian Vacuum IG remains the same regardless of the angle at which it is installed (from vertical to horizontal).
Guardian Vacuum IG™ takes two glass panes and seals them airtight. A vacuum is created in the space between the two fully tempered glass panes, which are held apart by almost microscopic pillars. The vacuum eliminates any fill gases and all associated conduction and convection losses through the gas, resulting in a significant reduction in heat loss from the glazing unit.
Guardian Vacuum IG was first deployed in retail refrigerator doors where it creates an optimal shopping experience by providing excellent, uninterrupted views of refrigerated goods.
Compared to standard triple insulating glass units* (IGUs), Guardian Vacuum IG is thinner and lighter, it has a better thermal insulating performance, a higher
In addition, Guardian Vacuum IG is fully tempered, which makes it suitable for use where appropriate safety standards need to be met.
Greg Kemenah, Director Guardian Vacuum IG comments: “The Guardian Vacuum IG solution from Guardian is groundbreaking in terms of glass innovation. Vacuum-sealed glass units with low-E coatings can achieve thermal insulating performance of R-12 (Ug equivalent value is 0.47 W/m2K)** with a profile that is only 8.3mm thick. This results in an insulating
glass unit that is 75% thinner, has 33% less weight and exceeds the performance of triple-pane, low-E glazings*. With building codes becoming more stringent, Guardian Vacuum IG will enable a world of possibilities for other applications emerging across multiple industries, in particular, windows. In the United States, Guardian Vacuum IG is now also available for new builds and windows’ retrofit. Guardian Glass will showcase its latest innovations, including a new dynamic shading solution, at BAU – Hall C3 / Stand 308 (14-19 January 2019 – Munich, Germany). * standard triple insulating glass units used in refrigeration are made of 4 mm float glass – 12 mm spacer 90% argon – 4 mm low-E glass (coating on surface #3) – 12 mm spacer 90% argon – 4 mm low-E glass (coating on surface #5). ** R and Ug values according to NFRC 2010. www.guardian-possibilities.com

Emmegi Satellite XT Proves Perfect
Choice For Clarke Facades When Clarke Facades in Ballymena opened a dedicated fabrication side to their business last year, they chose an Emmegi Satellite XT 5 axis machining centre to give them the performance and capacity they needed to match their ambitions. They wanted to be able to manufacture more of the curtain walling and bespoke architectural elements which they install on large scale building envelope projects across the UK and Ireland; and were doubling the fabrication capability of their new Clarke Offsite division to keep pace with very significant growth. Six months after the machine installation, the heavy duty 10.5m Satellite XT is proving the ideal choice. It can efficiently cut and prep profiles on a single machine and crucially can accom-
modate the complex, oversized curtain walling profiles which Clarke uses on many of its projects.
It also has a mobile gantry on the 10.5m long bed which allows the positioning of the clamps to be done separately, optimising production efficiency by enabling different workpieces to be machined at the same time in two work areas, or one end loaded and unloaded while the machine is operating at the other. The high-powered electro driven spindle on the Satellite XT is more than meeting expectations, delivering all the speed, accuracy and consistency in quality which matters to Clarke and to its customers. The durability and robustness of the Emmegi model in use has

When consulting with the project team about options, Gillian was very particular about the aesthetics of the new windows and also their ability to retain heat and reduce condensation. Gillian continued: “It was really important to us that the boat was warm and cosy, so the choice of
ON SITE light screens and two standard residential doors for the houseboat. However, the French doors to the outdoor living areas presented some issues to the team. Thomas continued: “Because the dimensions of the boat are not like a normal brick-built house, not all the door sizes are standard, and this posed one or two challenges! When it came to fitting the doors which led out onto the boat’s outdoor seating area, we couldn’t use a standard REHAU door product so instead we manufactured a large casement window and used this as a French door. We used heavy duty hinges to carry the weight of the glass door and used the REHAU TOTAL profile to match the rest of the windows. Problem solved!” Gillian added: “When you live on the water, you are always against the elements, but the PVC has worked really well on our houseboat. The windows are so easy to look after, and they make the barge look fresh, clean and new all the time. We have stunning views of the Titanic Museum and the harbour from Nolly, and the windows provide an important connection to it for us and our Air B&B guests.” windows was an integral part of retaining the boat’s heat and also reducing condensation, which can be problematic on houseboats. We were advised against using timber frames that can rot, so PVC was the best alternative. Initially, I was a bit unsure about how they would look but I am delighted with them – they are just so clean and bright and let in so much light, particularly in the upstairs living area.” Gillian was advised on the window and door specification by REHAU’s trade counter partner in Belfast, Windowmate Thomas McAllister, Sales Manager for Windowmate in Northern Ireland explored a number of options for the houseboat and ultimately rec-
ommended the REHAU TOTAL70 range. The casement and fixed windows could be easily installed in the steel frame of the boat and offered a high U-value for excellent thermal efficiency. Thomas said: “The project was unlike anything we had done before and came with some very unique challenges. Just getting products onto the boat and fitted safely was a different experience for us, but we worked on each problem as they came up to ensure the best installation possible. This included using an odd-leg profile to help seal the windows better onto the boat.” Windowmate supplied 12 standard casement windows, two fixed
Declan Coulter, Divisional Sales Manager from REHAU said: “It’s not every day that we are approached to provide windows for an unusual project like this one, but I am pleased to see how the flexibility in the REHAU range has allowed Thomas and the team at Windowmate to deliver a specification which works with the unique requirements of the houseboat. As well as providing windows and doors which will withstand the test of the seawater, they also deliver on the warm, cosy and condensation-free qualities Gillian was looking for. The houseboat looks stunning and we are proud to have been part of its transformation.” ww.rehau.com

Profile 22’s Optima Helps Housing Association Deliver Community Regeneration Project Profile 22’s Optima windows were chosen for the construction of 18 houses, 38 flats and two retail units as part of a regeneration scheme in Maidstone, Kent. Housing association Golding Homes has invested £50m in a three phase regeneration project to transform and improve the former Park Wood estate in Maidstone. The scheme involved providing over 200 new homes, mainly family houses, as well as new community facilities including new shops, and a much wider package of investment to improve the local area. Education, housing and healthcare contractor Rydon secured the £9.3m contract to deliver the third and final phase of the project, which involved building 18 hous-
es, 38 flats and two retail units. When it came to the windows and doors on the project, Rydon turned to longstanding supplier Feature Architectural Fabrications, based in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Feature Architectural Fabrications has only been a Profile 22 installer for around two years and Procurement Manager Paul Delaney attributes his company’s success in winning the Wallis Fields contract to the system. “Rydon specified PVC-U windows and doors and Optima from Profile 22 delivered the technical and aesthetic requirements needed.” Optima from Profile 22 is rapidly becoming one of the most widely specified commercial system

The system delivers optimal thermal performance, achieving a 1.2 W/m2K U-value as standard, with U-values as low as 0.8 W/m2K possible. It is PAS24 compliant as standard with Secured by Design options available as well. In its aesthetics and versatility, it sits comfortably in any architectural style. Feature worked closely with fabricator Framexpress and Profile 22 at every stage of the project. Profile 22’s specification team supported Feature with the technical information Rydon required, including U value calculations. The Framexpress team liaised closely with Feature and Profile 22 to deliver products on schedule and ensure deadlines were met. Deceuninck PVC-U Over
Aluminium
More than 700 frames of Deceuninck’s 2500 chamfered windows have been installed in a development of luxury apartments in Southampton. Alexandra Wharf is a collection of two and three bedroom, stylish water-front apartments, forming part of the Ocean Village development at the city’s marina. Although aluminium profiles were originally specified, Deceuninck fabricator Dempsey Dyer worked with contractor Bouygues to customise the specification to allow the use of sustainable PVC-U. The contemporary look of the 2500 chamfered series closely mimics the look of aluminium – so closely that at street level it’s said to be impossible to distinguish the PVC-U in the apartments from the aluminium used for the Harbour Hotel next door. The building also called for 150 sliding doors and Dempsey Dyer and Bouygues opted for the clean lines of Deceuninck’s Slider 24, which suited the contemporary design. It’s also one of the highest performing doors on the market for weather, water tightness, and security. All 150 doors and 700 windows were externally finished in Anthracite Grey Smooth Foil on white PVC-U internally. The harbour location and design of the building posed several technical challenges. The high rise nature of the apartment building design required strong windows to withstand high wind and water pressure – a challenge easily met by Deceuninck’s 2500 window with its Class 4 air permeability, Class 8A water tightness, and Class A5 2000Pa exposure.
The high salt content of the sea air also required special consideration. Austenitic hardware was required to combat the corrosive effects of salt water and all the hinges and screws used in the project have a TRICOAT surface, treated with a top coat containing a micro-corrosion protection system. The seaside location also meant the windows required a low solar gain and the 0.28 G-value of the 2500 window ensured that the building would not overheat. The project was completed in full and on time within 12 months, and contractor Bouygues was extremely happy with the finished development. Speaking about the Ocean Village development, Bouygues UK Managing Director for the South said: “Ocean Village has revitalised this part of Southampton and we are very proud to be part of such an important development.” Meanwhile, Nicholas Roach, Chairman of development management firm Nicolas James Group said: “Our new five star hotel and Alexandra Wharf apartments complete Ocean Village and seal its reputation as the finest location in the city to live and work.” Deceuninck works closely with commercial fabricators and gives comprehensive support on specifications, contract generation tenders, and technical requirements. Suitable for domestic and commercial installations, in certain situations the SF Xtra Sound Attenuator can be retrofitted over Titon’s standard 13mm slot. Titon Acoustic Vents Set The Tone For
Fairview Homes In London Over 2,000 SF Sound Attenuator (SFSA) Xtra 2500EA vents and canopies from Titon have been installed throughout a variety of Fairview New Homes’ newly built houses and apartments in Greater London. These include new developments in Camden, Hornsey, Greenwich, Croydon and Cricklewood, each of which had precise air flow and acoustic specification requirements. Titon’s products were incorporated into the windows fabricated by Dungiven-based Compass Windows & Doors, Ireland’s premier manufacturer of PVCu windows and doors. Throughout the various projects, a combination of different Titon products were used, including SFSA Xtra 2500EA Vents, SF418 Canopies, SFSA Xtra 2500EA Sound Attenuator Vents (25mm
and 75mm versions), and SFSA 2500EA 75mm Sound Attenuator Canopies. Commenting on the fabrication, Liam McCarney, General Manager, Compass Windows & Doors, said: “We have used Titon products on many projects previously, so were well aware they could meet the specification required. In fact, not only did the vents and canopies meet and exceed expectations, Titon was also able to offer the powder-coating colour options the customer wanted. We always knew we could rely on Titon not just for high quality products, but also great customer service.” The SF Xtra Sound Attenuator vents keep external noise levels down to more acceptable volumes, as well as provide sufficient air flow in accordance
64 WINDOW NEWS NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2018
The SF Xtra Sound Attenuator ventilator is part of Titon’s SF Xtra range – and is already being widely specified throughout the UK by housebuilders and developers. Using the SF Xtra ventilator and canopy as its base products, the SF Xtra Sound Attenuator, as its name suggests, offers much-improved levels of sound attenuation, especially when compared to similar ‘acoustic’ products. This is supported by accurate data from an independent UK acoustic test house, with full details available from Titon upon request. The SF Xtra Sound Attenuator can be purchased in a number of combinations based on different sizes of inner (ventilator) and outer (canopy). Combinations can be chosen depending on the sound attenuation requirement and can achieve up to Dn,e,w (C;Ctr) = 44 (-2;-3)dB when it is open. With more and more projects requiring ventilation that offers sound attenuating properties, the construction industry is finding it difficult to ensure specifications are met correctly. As a result, it needs to be understood that, as soon as ventilation is provided, there will be a compromise on the amount of noise let in, and vice versa. Not all ventilator manufacturer literature makes this clear; however, Titon recognises this and can educate and advisors customers on the potential pitfalls. www.titon.co.uk

Pilkington Planar™ Brings The Central Library In Tulsa,
Modern aesthetics and energy performance
To deliver the frameless “jewel box” cubes, the team specified the Pilkington Planar™ structural glass system, using glass fins and sidewalls to support the glass roofs without any need for non-transparent structural elements breaking up the views afforded to users.
The most striking design addition is a series of glazed reading rooms on the second floor of the library, which take the form of protruding glass boxes. As well as creating new areas of well-lit indoor space that can be used all year round, these also let light flood into the whole interior.
For the glazed walls, insulating glass units with a low-emissivity (low-e) coating on surface number 3 – that is, the outer face of the inner pane of glass – was used. This is topped with a roof comprised of laminated glass – also featuring a low-e coating – that makes use of a SentryGlas® interlayer in order
Oklahoma Into The 21st Century When the City of Tulsa set out to renovate its 50-year-old Central Library building – one of its bestloved landmarks – it wanted to bring it up to date in every respect, aesthetically, energy-performance-wise and in terms of the visitor experience it offers. The brief was to modernise the building without losing its period character. The structures are supported by laminated glass, and are connected by Pilkington Planar™ 905 and 902 series stainless-steel fittings, a low-profile system that minimises interruption to sightlines or distraction from heritage architectural features.
New and old in harmony One of the central challenges when refurbishing a cherished heritage building is enhancing its usability and modernising its energy performance while maintaining its essential architectural characteristics, and this is one of the great strengths of structural glazing systems.

again taking a major presence at the show, as befits one of the industry’s leading names. Alongside its market leading products, visitors to Epwin Window Systems’ stand will also see other new innovations. The FIT Show is held every two years. The last event welcomed nearly 10,000 visitors from the fenestration industry who were attracted by the opportunity to meet over 250 exhibitors and attend industry seminars. The Korniche Shines At The Biggest Regional
Homebuilding & Renovating Show As a smaller regional event, our Korniche team were not sure what to expect from the Homebuilding & Renovating Show at Harrogate following the hustle and bustle that met us at ExCeL, London. However, we soon found that there was no cause for concern as the Northern Region crowds turned out in their droves to attend the well-organized show. The interest in the Korniche lantern product at Harrogate came from the usual direct trade requests, self-builders and architects all the way through the spectrum to the homeowners themselves looking for the products they want to see on their single storey flat roof extensions, and the Korniche certainly provides the perfect solution for many. Potential customers had already seen the Korniche online and the show provided them the opportunity to actually see the Lantern up close and ensure the product stacked up against the advertising – there really is no substitute for getting to grips with the product
first hand, see it laid bare in the build demonstrations and have a discussion with the team about the design and engineering that goes in to the production of every Korniche roof lantern. We are certain that everybody who came onto the stand left with a clear understanding of the market, the pros and cons of all products on offer and how Korniche stacked up against its competition. We might be biased but we are fairly certain that giving the customer the hard facts leaves little doubt which product offers the best finish for their project. On the whole it was quite surprising to us how much prior product research had been done and how well- informed homeowners were prior to attending the stand at Harrogate. We expect the questions coming at us to be about price, lead time and colours but we were asked in depth questions about glass options, installation details, drainage, even how the system is manufactured. In the modern market people are really showing a
vested interest in the products they are choosing. It may seem strange that MFT a B2B company are attending retail shows, but for us promoting the Korniche brand in this way helps our partners gain sales and project work they would not ordinarily have direct access to. Homeowner end users are far more ‘product savvy’ today and want to know more about the product they buy, particularly if this is part of a huge investment such as a new home build or development. Attending HB&R gives us the opportunity to provide this high level of product and technical knowledge directly to consumer, from the experts, enabling them to confidently specify Korniche when speaking to their builders or installers, some even having the confidence to look online and purchase the Korniche Lantern Roof themselves. Resellers, Builders, and Installers in the North should be prepared for plenty of sales for the Korniche in the coming weeks! www.madefortrade.co/

GM Fundraising Christmas Cards Are Now Available With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about spreading some festive cheer with your customers, suppliers and friends. What better way to do that than to send a Christmas Card that is raising money for a very worthy cause. The 2019 GM Fundraising Christmas cards are available now and this year’s design is one of the best yet. Alan Sadler from GM Fundraising explains: “Over recent years there has been a move away from traditional Christmas cards, people choosing to opt for more mobile friendly ways in which to send their Seasons Greetings. But at GM Fundraising, we firmly believe there’s nothing quite like the personal feel of a card, which is why each year GM Fundraising commissions the children at Hope House Children’s Hospices to design unique Christmas Cards. They always really capture the spirit of Christmas and this year’s card, designed by Evie and her friends in the playroom at Hope House, is no exception. “Christmas cards have become a
regular in our fundraising efforts and each year we are humbled by the support we receive. Last year we sold more than 5,000 cards, many personalised with messages and company logos. Each standard pack contains 20 cards and costs £20 plus £2.50 P&P. Orders over 50 cards can be personalised for a small additional charge. “Every penny raised from the sale of these cards goes directly to support the children and families at Hope House Children’s Hospices. So why not send some traditional Christmas cheer and support this amazing charity too.” For more information, email: alan@gmfundraising.co.uk More information on GM Fundraising can be found at: www.gmfundraising.co.uk
