Key Land Capital’s investments division has bought Fusion Windows and Doors, which operates from a 10,000 sq ft manufacturing unit at Hubert Street, Aston, for an undisclosed sum.
The current annual turnover of £750,000 could be increased to £2 million in the next two years, and over £5 million in three to five years, added Kevin. A high pedigree management team is being assembled by the new owners and a number of new jobs are to be created.
Kevin Patrick Sharkey, director of Key Land Investments, said Fusion is in a strong position to take advantage of a buoyant commercial and residential property market with its wide range of aluminium door and window products. “We have identified Fusion as offering a business which offers great opportunities to grow. It complements our own property development business, and we plan to use Fusion products on some of our projects. However, we also 4 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019

Strong Start
To Deceuninck’s
2019 Sales Deceuninck has made a strong start to 2019, with January sales up 12% year-on-year. This follows a record-breaking 2018 which finished 21% up on the previous year.
Deceuninck attributes this strong momentum to giving customers the right products to sell in the premium sector. Sales of colour and the award-winning Heritage Flush Sash have skyrocketed. Managing Director Rob McGlennon says: “Despite the political chaos and constant reports of economic uncertainty triggered by Brexit negotiations it’s not all doom and gloom. The commercial market is strong, and we are strong in commercial. The Deloitte Real Estate Crane Survey, for example, monitors construction activity in Belfast, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester, as well as Dublin. In 2018 each city saw a sustained or increased level of development across a range of sectors including offices, residential, hotels, retail, education and student housing. Simon Bedford, partner and regional head at Deloitte Real Estate, said: “To have construction figures this healthy is somewhat of a surprise given a myriad of market uncertainties. Developer confidence is a key indicator for economic health and to have this many significant construction-starts over the last 12 months, especially in speculative office schemes, is testament to the resilience of the regions and appetite for growth.” www.deceuninck.co.uk 6 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019
Small Businesses Running
Out Of Time To Prepare
For No Deal Brexit
Responding to 12thFebruary Commons Statement from Prime Minister, Theresa May, National Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) Mike Cherry said: “With less than 50 days until we leave the EU on 29th March, we are now firmly in extra time with little, or no time, left on the clock for our small firms to get ready.
“By asking for a further two weeks to try and renegotiate a deal with the EU, the Government has simply called for further business uncertainty and political paralysis. The Government needs to recognise the significant harm this is already doing to our small businesses – put simply, it is making it impossible for them to plan, hire and invest. “This damage is being amplified with every day that passes and brings us closer to chaotic and damaging no deal Brexit on 29th March that small businesses are clearly not prepared for and time has run out for them to sensibly prepare. “Around 50% of impacted smaller businesses stated that they needed to know by the end of this Jan-
uary if they were to face a no deal scenario on 29 March. That deadline has now passed and they are no clearer as to what their trading terms will be after the 29th March. “The reality is that there is no guarantee that the Government will be able to renegotiate a deal with the EU in time to avoid an imminent no deal scenario. So, what is the alternative if this late game gamble doesn’t pay off? “If the Government is unable to renegotiate a deal with the EU, a short technical extension of Article 50 must be given serious consideration to buy more time to negotiate a deal that secures the transition period we fought for, and to avoid a no deal on 29th March.” www.fsb.org.uk

Sales Growth Reflects Strength
Of Safeware Offering
Epwin Window Systems’ hardware brand Safeware has just announced an impressive 12% growth in year-on-year turnover. Paul Hinds, National Sales Manager for Safeware, commented: “Safeware makes ordering hardware easy. In a world where everyone’s increasingly short of time, it’s a big bonus for our customers. The strength of this offering is reflected in our growing sales figures as more customers tap into the benefits that Safeware delivers.” Whilst the headline achievement is obvious, what sits behind that growth is important. Because Safeware is an Epwin Window Systems brand, fabricators can order their profile and hardware on the same order and have them arrive on the same delivery. It streamlines their administration, accounting and goods inwards processes and saves
valuable time. Equally as important is system compatibility. When fabricators order from Safeware they can be confident that all products are compatible with Epwin Window Systems’ brands Profile 22, Spectus and Swish for total peace of mind. The range includes branded locks, hinges, handles, stays, cylinders, vents and furniture at all price points for all Epwin Window Systems’ product variations. worry about product availability or delays to schedules. And there is dedicated specialist hardware support on hand if fabricators have any queries at any stage. After rapid year-on-year growth, 2019 shows no sign of slowing down. Paul commented: “The Safeware business is a key part of the Epwin Window Systems offer, and we’re continually evaluating the products we offer to ensure we meet the current and future demands of our customers. There are some exciting additions to our product range to come during 2019 which will give Safeware new opportunities to further grow its hardware sales”. In short, if you want a hardware partner that adds value, Safeware is the answer. And as its sales growth shows, it’s something increasing numbers of Epwin Window Systems’ fabricators are recognising. www.epwin.co.uk WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019 7

Inaugural Fabricators’ Forum Proves Success For BFRC The British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) launched a completely new event for the industry on 31st January. The inaugural Fabricators’ Forum drew delegates from many sectors to the Royal Berkshire Conference Centre at the Madejski Stadium in Reading to debate issues affecting the glazing industry. The event saw companies share views, knowledge and concerns of issues around legislation, regulation, training, testing and certification and industry data. The theme threaded throughout the event was energy efficiency – one of the most important and greatest benefits from installing modern windows. At the Fabricators’ Forum, five key speakers led the debates with expert presentations, each of which were followed by healthy discussions with questions and views shared from the audience. Host Paul Godwin opened the event by introducing the BFRC team led by Managing Director, Anda Gregory and Lis Clarke, Operations Director. They outlined the background and current plans for BFRC before Bob Morrissey, BFRC Business Development Consultant, presented on how energy ratings can be used as a valuable marketing tool, using his own insight and experience from when he was a salesman for an installation business. Russell Day, GGF Director of Home Improvements presented on the status of legislation and regulation in the industry and outlined the many challenges ahead. After lunch, Gary Morgan, BFRC Technical Director, presented on the issues around testing and certification followed by Andrew Scott of Insight Data who provided a superb overview of industry data and how it is being used. Last and by no means least, Gareth Jones, Managing Director of Profine UK, injected some light hearted humour as he delivered a first class presentation on industry issues including training, skills and potential materials shortage in the industry. In addition to the expert presentations, the audience joined in with healthy debate, asking some probing questions and sharing insights into their own businesses, including their Brexit preparations and how the start of the year has fared for their businesses. 14 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019
After the forum, Anda Gregory commented. “It was a very enjoyable and productive day. Thanks to all who braved the weather and were involved in making this such a fantastic, interesting and well-attended event.” Lis Clarke added, “The Fabricators’ Forum provided a great opportunity for the industry to come together to debate the issues. Being Europe’s number one energy rating organisation for windows and doors and being connected with thousands of companies throughout the glazing supply chain, BFRC is well placed to stage this kind of event.” From a speaker’s perspective, Andrew Scott, commented, “It was good to be involved with the Forum and share my thoughts around data. Some great topics tackling UK skills shortage and ageing workforce, potential materials shortage in light of Brexit and the latest thinking around building regulations and energy ratings. Well done to the organisers and all those involved.” In his closing speech Paul Godwin summarised, “This was a most worthwhile first event for BFRC. The audience were very passionate about a number of the issues raised and future events should allow more time for greater expression for those attending. I was delighted at how proactive the audience was.” The event also gave those present a preview of some of the new BFRC branding which will be fully launched in the spring. The day ended with Anda Gregory sharing some of BFRC’s strategic plans for the industry to maintain its market leading position. Anda Gregory concluded, “The Fabricators’ Forum showed how BFRC provides the impartial visible proof that windows and doors will perform as promised. In 2019 we will be unveiling more plans to demonstrate why BFRC is the UK’s most trusted and most widely-used energy rating system and for manufacturers, systems houses, fabricators, installers and homeowners.” https://bfrc.org/

Padiham Glass Announces Six-Figure Investment
easier to damage in production after being toughened. “We’re investing in dedicated trolleys which will allow us to protect the glass better as it moves down the line and reduce the number of rejections we have”, continued John. “The benefits of this are primarily internal. We would always pick up defects as part of our quality control process. It means that we’re reducing wastage and increasing yields. These are things which allow us to keep a control on costs and ultimately our price to the customer”, he added. This has also driven Padiham’s commitment to invest in a new Bystronic automatic sealing robot. “It’s about precision, yield and ultimately quality”, John said. Padiham Glass, which was acquired by Emplas in May last year [2018] has capacity to supply more than 15,000 IGU units per week from its 45,000 sq ft Lancashire manufacturing facility. This includes Saint Gobain’s highly popular Planitherm range.
IGU specialist, Padiham Glass has committed to a six-figure spend on further software integration, a new automatic sealing robot, plus new handling equipment, to drive increased flexibility and quality through its’ trade offer. Having already introduced new bar-coding systems and increased process control, the trade IGU specialist will bring new batch-control software online early this year. This gives it new flexibility to cut and prep and sub-batch product for toughening more efficiently, increasing yields, while also introducing new flexibility in its process to supply downstream lines more effectively. John Spiby, CEO, Padiham Glass, said: “We have an opportunity to increase our yields through more effective processing and prepping of sheet glass but also to be more flexible in how we batch glass for toughening so that we not only maximise output but also feed the lines more effectively, releasing 16 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019

We are first and foremost a trade IGU supplier”, said John. “Ownership by one of the UK’s largest and most successful fabrication businesses does, however, mean that we have a level of resource behind us that simply isn’t available to most IGU manufacturers. “That is allowing us to drive our investment programme forward – something which through more flexible supply and continually improving product quality, is supporting us in delivering against our commitment to deliver ever higher standards of service to the trade.” www.padihamglass.co.uk

Micros Back Down Under In Oz
It is almost exactly 10 years since Business Micros completed its first software installation in Australia and sales and installation expert Nick Bailey marked the anniversary by making the trip down under once again to complete yet another machine installation. He spent a week in Allansford, in the Western district of Victoria, with Rehau fabricator Thermosmart Windows, linking their Evolution manufacturing software with a brand new Kaban SB3011 machining centre. While he was there, he also met up with Paul Gerrard, the MD of Energy Efficient Windows, who flew in from Brisbane so that Nick could update his Evolution software and set up another trade customer on his EvoSatellite ordering system. Ten years on, Nick says that the Australian and New Zealand markets remain important for Business Micros, with more than 20 established PVC fabricators now using the Evolution platform for their manufacturing. He adds: “We can manage the vast majority of these customers’ requirements remotely from the UK but when it comes to machine links, there’s no substitute for being there on the ground to do both the installation and testing.” www.businessmicros.co.uk WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019 23

According to Bohle, while most glass processors have the required controls in place for the management of trade effluent, others may have gaps in their systems and could fall foul of the law.
He continued: “If you don’t have specific permissions and you don’t have a Trade Effluent Notice, you could be found in breach and charged with an offence under Section 121 of the Water Industry Act 1991.
Those found to have failed to comply, could face unlimited potential fines in Magistrates and Crown Courts.

Trade effluent is classed as any effluent that is produced from a process or activity connected to processes carried out as part of commercial trade or industry.
Bohle argues that the introduction of a sedimentor to a manufacturing line can support glass processors in increasing capacity, save thousands lost to downtime and extend the life of their machinery and tooling, as well as staying on the right side of legislation. Suitable for a wide assortment of grinding, drilling and sawing glass equipment, the Bohle Sedimentor range use a sophisticated automated multi-stage process to remove contaminants from coolants and water, repaying capital investment costs in as little as a year, through efficiency savings. “You’re getting better edge quality, better product and fewer rejections because coolant is cleaner. You’re also saving the time and manpower that goes into manually cleaning tanks, which can easily run six to eight hours each week – the equivalent of a full day’s production”, said Broxton. “Because the system is closed, effectively cleaning, recycling and recovering coolant it also means that you’re not regularly releasing trade effluent into the sewerage system, helping you to keep on the right side of legislation and discharge consents.” www.bohle.com
DEAR GERALD
Dear
Gerald Dear Gerald Over the years there has been much debate about best practice when it comes to heritage glazing and by that I mean windows that are specified with a narrow cavity or reduced sightline IGU. These are often a requirement for the replacement and refurbishment of windows in conservation areas, listed buildings and in Article 4 areas of designation. At Hodgson Sealants it has long been understood that our obligations as a manufacturer extend well beyond the provision of high quality products. In this instance our main aim is to give guidance to anyone involved in the selection and provision of glazed timber windows. This is with particular emphasis on the selection of suitable glazing systems for use with all glass types and the workmanship standards needed to maximise their performance and extend their service life. Due to our unique position in the timber glazing market, we are often asked for advice on how to best glaze these into timber frames, especially when glazing in conservation areas where the appearance of a traditional putty finish is required. Our response in line with that of the GGF is that the ‘glazing method employed should be based on the IGU manufacturers recommendations.’ Although it is noted that with reduced sightline IGU’s, it may not be possible to meet all of the requirements of the GGF Datasheet 4.2. By working closely with IGU manufacturers and
their component suppliers, including edge sealant suppliers, we have helped with the provision of glazing methods which give the manufacturer confidence that compatible materials and sound methods are being employed to install their product. Our customers, installers and also our partners endorse our glazing method, but ultimately, we’re here to fully support companies in the sector who need this expert assistance for heritage glazing. I liked the intimate office environment Quickslide has and felt that I would have the chance to take on more responsibility much faster than anywhere else.” Working alongside Marketing Manager Sandra Berg, Charlotte has used her millennial status to radically overhaul Quickslide’s email campaigns and social media presence, giving the company’s followers a regular and often interactive update on everything from award-winning products, to quality marketing support, to specialist profile bending services. Charlotte is eager for her ‘impressions’ to reach far further than just an online audience, though. As of January 2019, her step up to full time employment comes with an ambition to indulge in the unknown territories of event planning and PR opportunities: “Going forward I hope to get involved in a lot more. I look forward to seeing where Quickslide can take me, and how I can progress upwards from Marketing Assistant to roles such as Marketing Executive and Marketing Coordinator. Kestrel BDM Rises To Challenge When it comes to new challenges, UPVC roofline brand Kestrel’s business development manager for the North East doesn’t do things by halves. Richard Barrett started the new role in January, after moving house, welcoming a new baby and just months before he ties the knot. Luckily, the 42-year-old from Leeds has years of construction experience and a wealth of

Armor-Coat® Hardware Range Successfully Tested To
BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 Increased exposure to salty air and higher wind speeds makes choosing quality window and door hardware vital – and the new range from Stonebridge has now been certified as one of the best forged steel products available. As an island nation, nowhere in the UK is more than 70 miles away from the sea and it’s estimated that around three million people live on the coast. Rust and atmospheric pitting is a common problem for homeowners who live in coastal areas due to the high concentration of sodium chloride in the air. But these problems aren’t exclusive to the seaside. People living in industrial areas can also experience difficulties due to the corrosive effect of airborne pollut36 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019
ants as a result of certain manufacturing processes. Stonebridge’s Armor-Coat® range has been successfully tested to BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5, the highest possible standard. The test required products to be exposed to a neutral salt spray under controlled laboratory conditions for 480 hours and the results showed exceptionally high corrosion resistance. “We’ve designed this new range to give consumers a stylish choice of hardware that they can be confident will last for a very long time,” says Ian Smith, Design & Brand Manager at DJH Group, owners of the Stonebridge brand. “To come through a 480-hour salt
spray test is a massive achievement. Our nearest competitors failed at well under half that time, so that just shows how difficult it is.” As well as providing exceptional protection from corrosion, the Armor-Coat® system also incorporates UV protection for fade resistance. The new range of architectural hardware from Stonebridge combines traditional designs with a contemporary twist. Available in black and satin steel, it’s manufactured to the highest possible quality and features exquisite fine detailing. “The new Stonebridge range is as durable as it is stylish,” Ian concludes. “The test certificate proves exactly how robust and hard-wearing it is. New 3 Star Cylinder From
Kenrick
Kenrick has expanded its cylinder range with the introduction of a new 3 star high security cylinder. Independently tested to meet the latest security standards of the British Standard Kitemark (TS007 3*), the Kenrick 3 Star cylinder has been designed for those fabricators who want a top of the range door locking solution at a reasonable price. The new Secured by Design approved cylinder features multiple high security pins to provide maximum security and excellent resistance against the known cylinder attack methods – picking, drilling, snapping, bumping, pulling and screwing. Steve Williams, Kenrick’s sales and marketing director, says: “With more than 70% of burglars gaining
access to a property through a door, the choice of hardware for that door is a very important decision for any homeowner. Sadly, the number of attacks on doors is increasing because intruders can quickly and quietly manipulate the cylinder and gain access to a property – typically in less than 15 seconds. We need to stamp this type of crime out and offer far greater peace of mind for the homeowner. Our new 3 star cylinder eliminates any possibility of tampering with the cylinder, mak-

It’s also compatible with an A1 key blank, so homeowners can easily buy extra affordably-priced keys from the high street if they need to. These great features have already enticed two major fabricators to Kenrick because they wanted a reliable and versatile solution with absolutely no drawbacks.” The cylinder is manufactured in a polished brass or a nickel finish and can be easily retro-fitted with no additional preparation. It is available as Paired Alike or Thumb Turn and in all sizes from 70mm to 110mm in 5mm increments. Combining three distinct awning systems, the new Heston range is designed to provide installers with a premium solution to suit any outdoor space. What’s more, the systems are almost completely hidden when retracted fully. “We are absolutely thrilled to finally reveal our new Heston
collection – an exciting new addition to our industry-leading outdoor living range,” comments Mark Wood, Managing Director of the Milwood Group. “Whilst 2019 promises to be another tough and challenging year for the industry, there will still be many valuable opportunities available, especially in the buoyant outdoor living market. “There are no excuses to really seize this opportunity and take advantage of this demand for awnings, as well as aluminium verandas, canopies and carports. Whilst the Heston Light delivers a more compact solution with projections up to 3.6 metres and a span of six metres, the Heston Flat and Pro systems offer a slightly larger solution with 12-metre spans. The range-topping Pro can even achieve a reach of 4.3 metres out from the property. To tailor for every budget and application, each system can be upgraded to include LED lighting on the cassette and arms. Customers can even choose to have speakers installed in the awning, which they can control using the dedicated companion app. The new Heston range joins a whole host of awning solutions as part of Milwood’s offering, and sits alongside their full range of aluminium verandas, canopies, pergolas and glass rooms. Trusted by over 150 trade partners nationwide, the Milwood range is manufactured in the UK using the Kentfirm’s bespoke extrusions. The company says each system is available with fast turnarounds thanks to their centrally located distribution centre in Leicestershire. The centre is also home to Milwood’s bespoke training academy, where customers and new trade partners can explore the Heston range and take advantage of thorough product and installation training. www.milwoodgroup.com
The project design incorporated a gable overhang with the far side of the roof from the house, incorporating three fixed triple glazed panels from eaves to ridge to allow for maximum light transmission. These triple glazed panels within WARMroof hybrid offers consumers a practical design feature, that provides a far greater passage of light than a traditional Velux window. To the inside, this installation features the unique Opus cladding, but there is now also the option of traditional plasterboard, allowing consumers to paint up to the glass to match interiors. From an installation perspective, Prefix Systems have done much to invest in the latest off-site construction methodologies and so fitting teams benefit from the additional factory preparation. At the front end, sales teams have the benefit of a wide range of Prefix branded marketing materials including

Stewart Hamilton, managing director of Window Medic commented: ‘We’ve now completed two WARMroof Hybrid projects and in both cases it’s been an easy install, thanks to all the work Prefix do in the factory prior to delivery. Both homeowners are thrilled with their new rooms and this one especially has made a real feature on a home with such stunning views. And Glass Northampton Go The Extra Mile When a customer approached Glass Northampton Ltd for help to replace an aging conservatory in the Northamptonshire village of Long Buckby, the installer knew the job would require a bespoke service and the help of a supportive fabricator like the Glazerite UK Group Ltd. Chris Brown, Managing Director of Glass Northampton, explains: “The homeowner was looking for an existing conservatory to be replaced, like-for-like. The structure was beautiful but very old, decaying, and single-glazed. “Our aim was to create an equally stunning and traditional-look glass installation which could fit into the existing space, and 42 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019

Chris adds: “It is low maintenance, and combines energy efficiency and high security with the versatility and aesthetics Halo is known for.” Both Glass Northampton and Glazerite went the extra mile to meet the homeowner’s specific and unusual brief for windows which could open fully, fabricating and customising flying mul-
lion-style windows for use in the installation. Tony Frobisher, Office Manager at Glazerite’s East Division, explains: “We came up with the idea of using flying mullions, and securing them with heavy-duty hinges.” Chris also had the delicate task of fitting the roof into the existing tiles. With the help of Matt Cheetham from Northampton-based Prefix Systems South – who provided the Ultraframe roof – he surveyed the complicated roof structure and worked out how best to fit modern profiles into the old property, which even meant hand cutting onsite. Glazerite’s Tony says of the week-long installation: “However unusual a job, we always aim to support our installers. Glass Northampton has done a fantastic job of blending in the original features of the house with the new conservatory – it looks stunning.” www.glazerite.co.uk

Murat’s SMR-5 Welder
Each production cycle is automatically recorded and stored providing an automatic report simplifying the CE Marking compliance process. It’s combined this with a high speed MTL Shape Cutting Table, capable of cutting at up to 120m/minute, plus a Forel EG2201 Arriser and VW1600 Vertical Washing Machine. The EG2201 Ideally suited to processing of shaped glass, with two independent grinding heads guaranteeing a symmetrical arrissed edge, even where glass is cut with a flare. This same focus on versatility is inherent in Energy Saving Glass’ new VW1600 Vertical Washing Machine. It’s suitable for use with all glass panes, easily handling coatings and a wide variety of different grindings and glass thicknesses from 3-40mm. Alex continued: “You’re edge quality has to be spot on in toughening. Forel are leaders in glass processing technology and we already run a vertical laminate cutting table, washers and IGU lines, so we know firsthand just how good they are. If we’re going to invest, we’re going to invest properly. “The investment in the furnace, arriser and washer give us control of supply in terms of flexibility, quality and cost.”, he concluded. Since its launch, Haffner Murat says its SMR-5 welder has been an overnight success and sales have continued to rise as more and more fabricators see how much it has to offer their production. Dave Thomas, Managing Director of Haffner Murat, said: “The SMR-5 welder is one of the fastest and most accurate welders on the market today, which is why we’re seeing such strong sales.” In a single operation that takes less than a minute it can weld four squares. It’s also capable of welding two corner/transom/ corner windows or one window and two sashes in a single operation. It can weld five H welds in less than four minutes and change from corners to transoms in seconds, claims Haffner Murat. Dave said: “The numbers speak for themselves. The SMR-5 transforms speed and efficiency on the fabrication floor.” As well as delivering exceptional speed, the SMR-5 also
revolutionises quality. It guarantees 90 degree welding every time thanks to automatic head positioning and self centering for transoms, ensuring accuracy and eliminating remakes. Like all Haffner Murat machines the SMR-5 has been designed to be easy-to-use. It has touch screen control with memory positioning and all operations can be controlled automatically via the PLC. Plus to ensure the machine can start to add value from day one, expert installation and full training is provided as standard as part of the Haffner Murat service. Dave concluded: “The SMR-5 Welder speeds up production and improves quality, which makes it a very attractive option for fabricators. Finance packages are available subject to status and part exchange is an option too. If you want to grow your business this year, the SMR-5 welder is the perfect place to start.” www.haffnermurat.com WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019 49

Advanced Glazing Helps New Slimming World HQ wings connected by the lobby area features large ‘picture windows’ that deliver views over the facility’s attractive, leafy grounds.
“The combination of products we have supplied to this project use advanced coatings cleverly to minimise these two effects, helping to smooth out the peaks and troughs that can lead to uncomfortable temperatures, expensive heating and air-conditioning bills and wasted energy.”
Because much of the building’s envelope is glazed, the designers faced the challenge of avoiding the need for an energy-intensive climate-control system to create a comfortable environment for users all-year-round.
The curtain walling system uses double-glazed units manufactured by Pilkington, incorporating Pilkington Suncool™ 60/31 T solar-control glass and Pilkington Optitherm™ S1 Plus, a low-emissivity product.
Lee Shaw, Business Development Manager at Pilkington United Kingdom, explained: “The twin challenges any building with extensive glazing faces are loss of heat on cold days and excessive heating

Achieve Healthy Energy Performance With its newly extended headquarters in Alfreton, Derbyshire, weight-loss organisation Slimming World wanted to create a landmark building for the brand that would both provide an ideal working and training space for its people and deliver excellent environmental performance. Glazing plays a key role in the £8.5 million scheme, both aesthetically and in terms of its use of energy. At the heart of the building is a large atrium with a full-height glass front elevation and a glazed roof running right to the back of the space. Meanwhile, one of the 50 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019

outward. The low-emissivity glass meanwhile features a coating that reduces outward radiation of heat, so that less is allowed to leave the building on colder days. The same glass is used in the atrium wall and roof, but is held in place using the latest structurally glazed units from Schueco. These deliver glazed surfaces with ultra-low-profile frames to minimise interruption of views from the building, as well as daylight flowing into it. Extra strength is added to the atrium glazing by including a layer of laminated glass on the inner pane, to help the large units stand up to forces exerted on them by the wind and potentially the weight of snow during the winter. Lee Shaw continued: “This project
demonstrates the range of glazing solutions we are able to offer, with a combination of curtain walling, structural glazing and roof glass, all of which has been manufactured in the UK. “The architect has used timber slats to deliver some degree of solar shading, but the extensive area of glazing enclosing the space means there would still be significant risk of excessive heat buildup. The glazing specified minimises this effect, saving energy and money while also delivering a more comfortable and stable year-round climate for those using the building. “This is also one of the first projects to feature Pilkington Suncool™ 60/31 Pro T glass, which is now fully manufactured in the UK, following recent re-location of production from Germany. It’s great that we’ve been able to combine
a made-in-Britain success story with a new chapter for a well-loved British business.” Paul James, Slimming World’s Facilities Manager, says: “People have always been at the heart of Slimming World’s success and so ensuring that our people – our head office staff and Consultants – have the facilities and environment they need to do the best job possible has been a real priority for us. The new building will ensure we have the facilities we need to train and support all of our fantastic Consultants who deliver exceptional service to our members to support them to lose weight and live healthier, happier lives. “Having large expanses of glass has provided us with a beautiful, light-filled space that will be comfortable and inviting for everyone who uses the building right through the year.” WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019 51

Indigo Hotel Nab Speakes, Director of Architects 3DReid, said: “Creating a building that perfectly balances modern architecture with old is always challenging and the plans that we designed for the Hotel Indigo project were especially ambitious. Upon seeing the final result, we couldn’t be prouder of its design and how well it works in reality. Our talented team has created a remarkable new building that is a welcome addition to this part of the city. It stands at the gateway to the NOMA development and links this area seamlessly with the city centre.” Maarten Kleinhout, director of CSI said, “ In view of the tight site, building movement and rigorous performance criteria, the use of Unitised stick curtain walling to the majority of the façade was obvious. Our early collaboration with 3Dreid, Bowmer and Kirkland and Aluprof technical teams allowed the design intent to be proficiently translated into a viable and performing façade scheme which we are proud to be associated with. The project is considered a success and we continue to enjoy the same colourations on other schemes with Aluprof. It is evident that the construction industry is increasingly turning to unitised façade principles to deliver facades effectively.” James Houlston of BH Group, project owner said, “We are thrilled with the result of the work that has taken place so far. The building looks spectacular and is eye catching for all of the right reasons. We tried very hard to maintain the original fabric of the City Buildings and I am so pleased that we have been able to intertwine this with a modern new tower that reflects Manchester’s newer trends in architecture.” www.aluprof.co.uk

This year, the Eiffel Tower will mark its 130th birthday – and state-of-the-art Edgetech innovation is helping ensure it’ll still be delighting visitors for decades to come. When esteemed architects Moatti & Rivière produced highly complex designs for renovating the Tower’s 57.6m viewing platform, their plans called for glass units that excelled on all fronts. They envisaged a 130-square foot glass floor, offering spectacular views of the Champs de Mars below, fringed with a 2.5m glass balustrade, and, most ambitiously of all, a double-kinked glass façade, 8m high and 20m wide. Both concave and convex in parts, the façade was far too intricate to be manufactured in one piece and was therefore made from a mosaic of cylindrically bent rectangular panels, all incorporating Edgetech’s Super

It’s been used in some of the world’s most striking and iconic new buildings, including Zaha Hadid’s The Opus tower in Dubai. “It’s immensely gratifying to see Edgetech technology used in one of history’s most famous buildings,” comments Managing Director Chris Alderson. “Most people on the planet can recognise the Eiffel Tower, and it’s the most visited pay-to-enter monument in the world, attracting over seven million tourists every year. “For us, having our products chosen to help safeguard the Tower for the future is a huge honour – and a testament to the incredible strength and versatility Super Spacer Triseal can offer.” For more information please visit www.edgetechig.co.uk

Cap Free Fire Rated Curtain Wall
In what is believed to be a first for the industry, a cap-less, fire rated curtain wall system has been completed on a refurbishment development in Manchester. The project, known as ‘The Core’, is located at 24-30 Brown Street in the city centre and uses the ‘MB-SR50N EI efekt’ developed by Aluprof. Originally built in the mid-1980s as the headquarters for law firm Halliwells, the building, also 54 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019
formerly known as St James’s Court, has been given an £8 million overhaul to replace the facade and re-fit the internals. The Core comprises 48,000 sq.ft of office space over six floors including a new 7,500 sq.ft roof-top extension. It is this new upper floor that proved a challenge for the architects PRP as the planners insisted on parts of the new facade would need to be fire rated due to the proximity of
other buildings and future developments. A fire rating of EI60 was required on part of the new cap-less, curved glass facade on the top floor. Aluprof’s new system, MB-SR50N EI efekt, enabled the architect to have a cap-less fire rated system whilst at the same time seamlessly blending in with areas which did not require a fire rating. Howells’ Bespoke Glazing System Restores Historic
Alton Towers Conservatory Howells Patent Glazing was appointed manufacturer and supplier of a bespoke glazing system for one of the greatest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Britain, the Towers, known to millions as the centrepiece of Alton Towers Resort. Adapting its popular HGR 1 rafter bar, the Black Country business supplied roof lanterns for the restoration of the house conservatory, a significant feature of the south 56 WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019
side of the house. Dated around 1815 – 1817, the conservatory was designed by architect, Thomas Hopper, in the Gothic style, with a glazed fan vaulted ceiling believed to be inspired by the chapel at Westminster Abbey. Built of stone, with iron framed windows and a glazed timber roof, it comprised three elements; two long glasshous-
es linked by an octagon with Gothic windows. A fourth element was added later, in 1824, to connect the conservatory with the new Octagon Gallery. As part of its commitment to preserving the site’s historical features, the Resort commissioned the restoration of the house conservatory in late 2010, including the re-instatement of the whole roof, using a timber structure with aluminium

Quiet Study Time For London Students Thanks To The Window Company (Contracts)
After a stringent tender process and submission of section details and examples of similar lanterns to the planning officer, Howells Patent Glazing was appointed manufacturer and supplier of the roof lanterns. Working alongside Staffordshire-based contractor, Seddon Construction, Howells was tasked with producing and installing the roof in just four months, completing the contract prior to the new tourist season. To meet the slim, pencil line requirements of English Heritage, the patent glazing specialist adapted its popular HGR 1 rafter bar to create a bespoke glazing system. The 37.5mm slimline aluminium glazing bars sit on the wooden rafters so the view from below is timber, as it would have been originally. To complement the mullions, crestings were designed specifically for the conservatory featuring fleur de leys. These were profile cut from 6mm aluminium. The aluminium bars and crestings were powder coated in RAL 9010, an offwhite satin finish. That was seven years ago, since then the conservatory has been a magnificent spectacle for the many thousands of visitors passing through the Staffordshire tourist attraction. David Rhodes, head of buildings and estate at Alton Towers, comments, “With regard to the roof, we have had no issues over the past seven years and it is performing as expected.” www.howellsglazing.co.uk
Yara Lewisham is a brand new mixed use development combining 4,000 sq ft of office and retail space on the ground floor with private student accommodation on the floors above. The 5-storey development with feature brick facades includes aluminium windows and glazed shopfronts installed by the award-winning commercial specialists The Window Company (Contracts). All are in Smart System’s Alitherm range, including close to 200 windows fitted in the 92 en-suite and studio student rooms. Because Yara Lewisham is located next to the mainline railway line into London Bridge, The Window Company (Contracts) recommended high performance acoustic glass throughout to ensure that the necessary decibel reduction
levels were achieved for quiet studying. The main contractors on the project were HG Construction who awarded the glazing contract to The Window Company (Contracts) on the basis of previous successful collaborations. David Thornton, Chairman of The Window Company (Contracts), explained that, as a truly independent installer, one of the key strengths of the business is its ability to recommend the right product for every project, with no vested interest in any particular supplier or system. He said: “Our expertise is in installation and our highly trained teams can supply and fit products in aluminium, PVC-U or timber.” Since the completion of Yara Lewisham, The Window Company (Contracts) has been named the Glass and Glazing Awards’ Installer of the Year. www.thewinco.co.uk WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019 57

It’s widely expected that 2019 will be the year of the flush sash, so it’s appropriate that Timberweld® is the main sponsor of FIT Show TV. Timberweld® is the patented method of jointing that makes perfect corners, and creates a butt-joint effect outside and inside a window for an authentic timber look perfect for flush sashes. “If fabricators and installers love flush windows and want a timber-look inside and outside, Timberweld is the only way to make them cost effectively,” explains Alan Burgess, the man behind the Timberweld innovation. Taking place on 21-23 May at the NEC, the FIT Show is a worldclass exhibition of hundreds of new products and services, many on show for the first time. FIT Show TV will provide a dedicated news channel in the months running up to the show to connect to a wider online audience, with video submissions by exhibitors shown at www.fitshow.co.uk/fitshow-tv To submit a video for FIT Show TV, contact Sara Mikunda, email perfectcorners@timberweld.co.uk WINDOW NEWS FEBRUARY 2019 65
