Composite Fire Door Sales

Resumed Following Landmark Agreement

Between ACDM And Government

Following three months of intensive discussions between the Association of Composite Door Manufacturers (ACDM) and Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) to resolve the industry’s self-imposed moratorium on composite fire door sales, an agreement has been reached to allow sales to resume. Sales of composite fire doors were suspended following the issue of a press statement by the MHCLG that named a number of manufacturers whose products had failed to comply with Building Regulations after testing was carried out as part of the Grenfell Tower investigations. Following early discussions with the Government, the ACDM and its members took the decision to suspend sales unilaterally until evidence could be shown that manufacturers and suppliers of such products were testing in full compliance with the Building

Regulations, in addition to a number of other criteria. These state that fire door set manufacturers must have primary test evidence illustrating that products have passed the required fire tests from both sides, with written confirmation from the test house confirming this result. Additionally, a director from the manufacturer of the doors should write a confirmation to the supplier of the door blank, enclosing successful bi-directional test evidence confirming that the door sets they intend to manufacture and supply will use, without exception, only the components within the door sets tested. Continued supply of door blanks will continue only when such evidence has been provided. Andrew Fowlds, Chair of the ACDM, says that the discussions have been lengthy, detailed and challenging but with a positive

outcome: “The cost to the composite door industry during this period has been very heavy, with a number of casualties in terms of jobs and revenue. However, as long as all manufacturers of such products have completed bi-lateral testing in strict accordance with the Building Regulations, and provided the necessary written confirmation to their supplier, then supply may resume. “The Task Force set up by the ACDM to tackle this issue has spent a great deal of time and energy to bring this to the earliest possible conclusion. I am pleased that we have been able to finalise and agree the process to allow the resumption of the manufacture and supply of GRP Fire Doors to the market under the terms outlined to the Under Secretary. This is essential to prevent further damage to an industry that is already severely weakened and suffering job losses, but which has reacted positively and responsibly by voluntarily withdrawing from the market until this resolution could be found.” Regarding the issue of remediation, Fowlds adds: “I have advised the Under Secretary that this will be dealt with separately from the re-supply of new products. A proposal and action plan by the ACDM on how this may be dealt with is currently under consideration.” The ACDM will also become the Governing Body for the composite door industry, leading the development, implementation and policing of standards whilst also promoting the use of composite doors in established markets as well as developing further opportunities. In response to the MHCLG the association will also compile a database of all fire door products tested by members, in addition to providing technical advice. www.acdm.co.uk WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019 7

THE BEST ALL ALUMINIUM LANTERN ROOF

AWARD FOR INNOVATION The Charles Godfrey Memorial Award for Innovation is given every year to a product that has brought significant innovation to the building industry. The Korniche Aluminium Roof Lantern has been awarded this prestigious award for 2018. Roger Bisby who tested the Korniche earlier in the year commented: “The first thing I saw was the packaging. Every builder knows the frustration of having items arrive on site with damage. It slows the job down and causes hassle for the manufacturer and the customer. Often there is a knockon effect because other trades are unable to get on. With the Korniche Roof Lantern, everything arrived in perfect condition. The next thing is the instruction booklet, which deserves as award on its own. A huge amount of thought and design has gone into this. Every stage is clearly shown with intelligent use of colours to show you the relevant components. Then there is the engineering. It all fits perfectly, and, when I say fits, I mean no gaps or misalignment, and no need for packers, shims or sealant.

The whole installation process went like a dream and I said at the time that I couldn’t wait until I had the chance to fit another. It didn’t take long. Without the slightest rush I fitted three on a roof in less than a morning and each one was perfect. More importantly, the customer was delighted”. Made For Trade are delighted to have received this award, one that stands by the very values on which the Korniche was conceived - to deliver to builders and installers a product that makes life on site easier and more cost effective, whilst providing a beautiful, architectural lantern look that is contemporary whilst holding on to traditional timber style fitting any home. FITTED IN MINUTES, GLAZED IN SECONDS, STRONGER than any other lantern on the market with WARMER construction and SLIMMER profiles. Bradley Gaunt, Managing Director says “We have been entered for many fenestration awards over the last couple of years and from my point of view in this industry we often see these awards as the usual suspects congratulating one another on their endeavours, in many cases winning could easily be based on the strength of a

PR budget?!. So I’m over the moon with this independent award and Roger’s comments as it puts the product, engineering and design centre stage and applauds the advantages these efforts deliver above its competitors. In 2019 Made for Trade continue the innovation delivered in the Korniche Lantern with a new product launch at the FITShow which we are all very excited about” There is no greater proof that a product like Korniche has made a mark on the industry than seeing competitors scrambling to catch up, looking to pick up on one or two aspects of the design to try and differentiate their own products and claw back market share. However, the Korniche Aluminium Lantern has already achieved an affinity with both trade and homeowners which will be hard to overturn. No other lantern has the overall winning combinations the Korniche delivers. From quotation to delivery in as little as five working days for a totally bespoke product and fitting in under 30 mins on site – Korniche remains the obvious solution for trades looking for a lanterns to grace their flat roof extension projects in 2019.

Senior Achieves

BES 6001 Accreditation

Senior Architectural Systems, one of the UK’s largest privately owned fenestration systems company, has been recognised for its commitment to the responsible and sustainable sourcing of its aluminium extrusions with an accreditation to BRE Global’s BES 6001 standard. Established by BRE Global, the independent internationally-renowned certification body, the BES 6001 Framework Standard for Responsible Sourcing aims to make it easier for specifiers to choose building materials and products that meet the growing requirements of sustainable construction, both in terms of their social and environmental impact. Senior is committed to using recycled aluminium across its product range and the audit of the company’s sourcing procedures including evaluations of its quality and operational management systems, environmental policies, legal compliance, 10 WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019

commitment to upholding high standards of health and safety and supply chain collaboration. Commenting on the accreditation, Melanie Jopling, Senior’s group QuEnSH manager said: “As part of our service to our clients, it’s important that our products not only perform well but that we can also provide evidence that the aluminium we use is responsibly sourced. We are extremely proud to have met the requirements of the BES 6001 standard and to be able to reassure our clients that their commitment to sustainable construction is mirrored by our own initiatives.” Benefiting from the inherent strength and infinite recyclability of aluminium, Senior’s wide range of aluminium fenestration systems have been designed to offer the highest levels of aesthetic appeal and technical performance. Senior’s commitment to the continuous improvement

of both its product range and manufacturing techniques has also seen the company develop some of the most innovative solutions available to the UK market, including the patent PURe® aluminium door and window system. The PURe® system is the first in the UK to benefit from an enhanced thermal barrier manufactured from expanded polyurethane foam (PUR). Traditionally used in cladding and insulation products, the innovative use of PUR as a thermal barrier in windows gives the PURe system the potential to achieve U-values as low as 0.71w/m2k when calculated as a commercial CEN standard window and 0.93W/m2 K when calculated as a CEN standard door. Fully recyclable, the PUR thermal barrier can also be reused as fillers for other products, with no requirement for landfill. As well as developing energy-efficient glazing solutions, Senior has also invested heavily in reducing its own carbon footprint and recent investments include an in-house PUR processing line, a more efficient grey water system to recycle water used in manufacture and a new £150k waste reducing powder coating line which is the most environmentally efficient of its kind, saving over 22 tonnes per year of product being sent to landfill. Other initiatives that have been introduced include the installation of a new Biomass boiler heats the warehouse, fuelled by waste timber from wooden packaging and the manufacture of Senior’s Hybrid timber aluminium composite systems. Senior has also been able to reduce the environmental impact of its delivery fleet by investing in 17 five star eco vehicles and installing onsite electric car charging points for both staff and visitors. Casement Window Domestic and commercial fabricator and installer Polar Windows added the Optima Flush Casement Window from Profile 22 to its portfolio a year ago. Managing Director of Polar Windows, Alan Crowe, says it was a wise decision: “We’ve seen a 30% growth in requests for the Optima Flush Casement Window since this time last year as more and more homeowners see the benefits of what the window has to offer.” Alan highlights the versatility of the window as one of the biggest factors in its success. “It’s marketed as a heritage window and it certainly offers authentic period aesthetics. But its slim sightlines also appeal to consumers looking for a sleek, contemporary appearance. DGS-Rapierstar Offer ‘Full System’ Hardware

Peace Of Mind As Brexit Looms

Hardware manufacturer and supplier DGS Group Plc and fastener specialist Rapierstar have combined their distribution expertise to provide real supply chain depth, helping window and door fabricators maintain production as Brexit trade deal uncertainty looms.

DGS can provide supply assurances thanks to a longterm strategy of building deep stocks of up to six months for all their window and door hardware, including all the essential fasteners from supply chain partner Rapierstar. The two companies have worked closely together to ensure fastener availability matches all hardware components, including DGS Elite, their exclusive European window and door

hardware and their own UKmade friction stay range.

A privately-owned manufacturer and distributor employing more than 200 people, the DGS business has been built for over 40 years on excellent products and availability. Their logistics centres around 120,000 sq. ft. warehousing across the UK and Ireland and the DGS fleet of over 40 delivery vehicles. Rapierstar fasteners have been a key part of DGS’s ‘full system’ solution for window and door hardware for several years now. They too have a strong track record in delivery reliability and a massive stock of fasteners held at their own Cheshire bonded warehouse; more than one billion screws in

“With our on-time customer deliveries figure currently at 98.8%, our approach is definitely benefiting customers, but more importantly it means that we are in great shape to weather any Brexit storm,” says David. “No fabricator wants the headache of stock shortages caused by pallets being delayed at Dover or elsewhere, or because there are simply not enough delivery drivers available at the moment, now that many are returning to their native countries. “The good news for our customers is that DGS is set up to cope well with events on the horizon as we have all the components in stock for the full hardware system needed on all types of profile and we can deliver to their door with our own fleet of vehicles and drivers. Rapierstar plays a crucial role here too, ensuring that it is not a lack of fasteners that brings our customers’ production lines to a halt!” Rapierstar enables fabricators to maintain high volumes of production and deliver consistently high quality finished windows and doors. Its expertise in new product development, sourcing, international trade, logistics and distribution ensures it can offer excellent reliability as a supply chain partner, with its current on time in full performance standing at 99.5%. www.rapierstar.com www.dgsgroup.co.uk WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019 15

Dortech Architectural Systems was established a quarter of a century ago, and has been designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke glazing solutions ever since. But Dortech Maintenance was formed in 2015 to help clients prolong the lifespan of their existing installations. “The recession had led to a contraction of the construction industry and new build projects had slowed,” explains James. “But as a direct consequence of such market forces, the desire to maintain, repair or even refurbish commercial windows and doors soon emerged, with businesses recognising this as a far more economical alternative to replacing with new.” Keen to retain as many staff as possible during this difficult time, the management team therefore focused their efforts on diversification – and now the maintenance division is the fastest growing part of the business.

Dortech Group MD, James Sutherland

Growth Of Maintenance Division Signals Positive

Year For Dortech A brave decision made during the toughest economic conditions of the past decade, has proven a game-changer for a commercial glazing specialist. That’s the bold statement made by James Sutherland, managing director of Yorkshire-headquartered Dortech Group, as the business prepares for a big year of trading. The company’s glazing maintenance division is forecast to almost double its turnover to £1m in 2019, which will take Dortech to a £10m organisation overall. The expansion – which comes as a result of a growing reputation and complex market conditions – has also kickstarted a recruitment drive and a £200,000 investment in the team’s Huddersfield factory. 16 WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019

Having completed projects for clients including the NHS, Sheffield Business Park and the Victoria Mills residential complex in Shipley – to name just a few – the division has grown from a team of four to one with now eight aluminium glazing specialists. The hunt is also on for a further four maintenance engineers over the next 12-24 months. “There are now 62 people throughout the entire business, and we’re investing across the board,” James continues. “We’re currently reconfiguring our 24,000sqft site, for instance, to break down departmental barriers, promote company-wide knowledge transfer and strengthen our company culture. We’ve also procured new CNC machinery and increased the storage capacity for our third division – Dortech Direct – which is similarly performing well. “But the maintenance proposition has never been more important, and we predict this division will account for 20% of revenue by 2022. A ‘preserve and prolong’ mindset was borne out of the last recession, but with further economic uncertainty on the horizon, this will only rise. There are legacy issues to solve including leaks, asset deterioration and energy inefficiencies, and if customers opt to buy cheaply to keep costs down, safety standards could also be at risk. We want to ensure that none of these things happen.” Founded by Chairman Steve Sutherland in 1993, Dortech began as a 30-man operation and growth has been entirely organic, with no external investment. www.dortech.co.uk

It is great to see hundreds of thousands more disabled people are benefitting from new career opportunities.” The full Eurocell systems supply partner specialises in providing high-quality products to local authority building projects, including social housing, around the country, including for Birmingham City Council. And, thanks to a rich legacy of ensuring equal opportunities for all that stretches all the way back to 1839, Shelforce are helping to change the perception of disabled people in the workplace. They overcome bigger obstacles every day than many of us will face in a year – and that means they’ve got a toughness and a determination that’ll see them through any business or production issue in the workplace.

The General Manager of a Birmingham-based PVCu window and door manufacturer is delighted with new figures recently released that 973,000 more disabled people are in work since 2013. Shelforce have been leading the way in inclusivity in the glazing industry when it comes to training and employment opportunities, with 75% of its workforce disabled.

The latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show more than half of disabled people are now in work, outnumbering those who are not in work. Official figures also show that one in five new enterprise business start-ups are run by disabled entrepreneurs. Howard Trotter, General Manager at Shelforce, commented: “What these figures show is that employers are waking up

“They make exceptionally loyal, dedicated, hard-working employees in this and any other industry, so why wouldn’t you want to pick from a huge talent pool?” To continue these values, Shelforce is set to open a dedicated training facility at their factory in Erdington to provide regular work experience placements for students from nearby schools, including special needs schools. www.shelforce.com WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019 19

To ‘Ask for Ali’ Senior Architectural Systems has plenty of new developments in store over the next 12 months – giving trade fabricators and installers even more reasons to ‘Ask for Ali’ and take advantage of the manufacturer’s extensive product offering and in-house services.

A year after the official launch of Senior’s new slimline Ali VU aluminium window, which has been specifically developed for the domestic market, the company has established several new accounts with trade professionals across the country. With the number of completed projects featuring Senior’s stylish Ali FOLD aluminium patio door range also on the rise, and the company’s work in the commercial sector continuing to flourish, Senior is pledging further investment in its product range and commitment to customer service in 2019. Jonny Greenstreet, Senior’s marketing manager explains: “2018 was our most successful year to date and we are hoping to build on this momentum to make this year another one to remember. Some of our new plans are already coming to fruition, such as the work we are doing to expand storage space at both our Denaby and Newport branches

which will allow us to increase the amount of stock we can hold and keep lead and delivery times to a minimum. We are also gearing up to officially launch our brand new training programme for our trade customers which we will be delivering from our brand new in-house training facility. ” Over the coming months, Senior will also be announcing a number of new products, including the new PURe® Commercial Door, as well as updates to existing ranges. VEKA Recycling Begins Production At New Wellingborough HQ VEKA Recycling Ltd, the UK’s leading recycler of PVC-U post consumer window profiles, has begun full production at the company’s brand new headquarters site in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. From acquisition in February of the 5.5 acre site on the town’s Finedon Road Industrial Estate and after undergoing a substantial refurbishment, rebuilding work and industrial fit out, the facility is now converting full loads of virgin, post consumer and industrial profiles into high quality PVC-U compound. Further investment and development during the next 12 months will further extend the capabilities and capacity of the plant, to become Europe’s most advanced specialist windows recycler. “We are very pleased with the progress we have made at our

new site,” said VEKA Recycling Ltd Managing Director Simon Scholes, who has managed the project throughout. “It took many years to find what is the perfect site for our requirements but we are on schedule to build a facility that will be totally self-sufficient and capable of recycling in excess of 25,000 tonnes per annum by the end of 2019.” Current capability allows the plant to accept previously installed frames as well as virgin offcuts, reduce them and then transfer component materials for further reduction and separation. PVC-U is then further processed at Wellingborough and returned to market for re-manufacture. New products produced using VEKA recycled compounds include new window profiles, cills and trims as well as products as diverse as electrical conduit and construction components. When

the plant is fully operational all materials will be extracted and re-processed on site. The Wellingborough plant will be the third to be built by VEKA Umwelttechnik GmbH, the specialist recycling subsidiary of the VEKA AG Group, of which VEKA Recycling Ltd is a wholly owned division. The company has pioneered PVC-U recycling in Europe with its first plant opening in Behringen, Germany as long ago as 1993. A further facility was opened in France in 2006. The combined capacity of the three plants will exceed 100,000 tonnes of PVC-U windows a year. “VEKA Group made the commitment to invest more than £8 million at Wellingborough after the Brexit vote was known and is fully committed to the UK market, irrespective of the status of the UK relating to Europe,” explained Simon. “There is very real belief in and commitment to both the concept of recycling and to the UK window and door market,” he added. Rapierstar’s Fastener

Expertise Supports

VEKA’s Testing And NPD Specialist fastener supplier Rapierstar is helping VEKA’s technical team and its fabricators to create the most robust and operationally reliable new windows and doors, by becoming an exclusive supply partner for its UK Technical Workshop in Burnley. The Technical Workshop is a vitally important facility for VEKA and fabricators of its profile systems, allowing for indicative testing to be conducted on a wide range of customer window and door prototypes, as well as for VEKA’s own new product developments. As the workshop’s exclusive partner for fasteners, Rapierstar now provides window and door screws for all the prototype windows built by VEKA engineers, and it is providing expert technical guidance on fastener selection and application to any VEKA customer who is seeking to 24 WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019

optimise their test outcomes. Rapierstar’s support for the VEKA Technical Workshop strengthens its long standing relationship as a supply chain partner for fasteners. It has worked closely with VEKA since 1998, providing technical advice to help address common fastener issues and ensure fabricators deliver the best possible result with the finished window or door. This information is readily available in Rapierstar’s Recommended Fixing Manual (RFM) for VEKA profile systems, which can be downloaded at www.rapierstar.com. Dave Jones at VEKA PLC said: “A window or door is only as good as its weakest link and all too often the importance of the humble screw is overlooked when testing for air and water tightness or enhanced security under PAS24.

That’s why we ensure all our prototypes are built using the most suitable fasteners throughout, and we encourage our fabricators to adopt the same approach. “Rapierstar’s support for our Technical Workshop helps us achieve consistency in our NPD programme and maximise the chances of testing success. More broadly too, it gives our fabricators access to their technical expertise whenever they need it – it’s a partnership that should ensure the fastener is never the weak link.” Paul Balfe, Technical Consultant at Rapierstar, added: “We’re often approached by customers who are working on a new product for testing, or those who have experienced difficulty in achieving the performance required to pass a test, to investigate whether different fastener choices could make a difference. Supporting VEKA in this way is, therefore, a great way for fabricators to access our fastener advice and guidance at an early stage and avoid future – and potentially costly – setbacks.” Find out more about Rapierstar at www.rapierstar.com

DEAR GERALD

Dear

Gerald Dear Gerald The industry has a mixed record of respecting intellectual property (IP). We’ve probably all seen cases of copying (ranging from accidental infringement to blatant copying and theft) of innovations, product design and brands. Common infringements range from using images and brochures without permission, passing off as other brands, as well as copying other companies’ products without permission and benefitting from their innovation and investment without paying for them. We all pay a price if we allow this to happen. People invest a great deal of time and money in building their brand and developing innovations. As an industry, we need a flow of innovative ideas and new products to help us take advantage of new opportunities and expand the market. But companies are not going to continue investing their time, efforts and money if they don’t get a return. Over the years, window systems, roofline companies, hardware and conservatory companies, fabricators and installer networks like TimberWindows.com and Bygone Collection have engaged in successful legal action to defend their intellectual property, and indirectly have defended the industry. As MD of Masterframe and the Bygone Collection, I’ve experienced this at first-hand. Recently, we successfully took legal action against a com26 WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019

pany that purported to sell Bygone windows and doors, using Bygone promotional literature. When the homeowner realised the difference in quality and turned to us we took the company to court, acting on behalf of the homeowner and Bygone Collection installers who they were pretending to be. The guilty party was fined over £5,000 plus 100 hours unpaid community work. Rip-offs like this give our industry (and them) a bad name. it’s important to check if the image, product or innovation you want to use is copyrighted, or patented, and if you need a licence. Checking and obtaining a licence is a lot cheaper than legal action, and a lot less disruptive. Doing it right saves you money and your reputation. Yours sincerely Alan Burgess, Timberweld®

Dear Gerald If ever there was a time that proves comprehensive protection for consumers isn’t just a ‘nice to have’, it’s a ‘must have’ for the sake of the industry’s reputation, its now. With the demise of SafeGlaze UK, the industry should debate its stance on providing robust consumer protection. And the policing of this. Safeglaze has potentially left thousands of homeowners with unfulfilled orders, missing deposits, and little comeback in terms of repair works or genuine underwritten guarantees. For example, it appears many consumers were not actually registered by Safeglaze with their IBG provider. Also, deposit protection isn’t mandatory in this sector, so many consumers lose out. At the time of writing Warmseal (whom we are informed are taking over the order book of Safeglaze) has secured the £5.5m order book to fulfil orders of more than 2000 customers. It is our understanding that

DEAR GERALD

existing guarantees are not provided for within the deal with the liquidator. So, what will happen to those consumers left without a guarantee or protection? This type of situation (which often goes unreported or under the radar) discredits our industry and the honourable, principled people who work within it.

petent Persons Schemes and IBG providers and the Secretary Of State at the Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) [the ministry responsible for legislation in the glazing sector] to discuss how the sector can realistically and affordably provide redress for all consumers. It is possible.

Our thoughts are of course with the 132 employees who lost their jobs at Safeglaze and sincerely hope they soon find rewarding work. Homeowners, who are often affected in these circumstances, to varying degrees, are particularly close to our hearts at DGCOS. It’s the very foundation of our organisation – to offer genuine protection to consumers with no ifs, buts or maybes. No loop holes that leave homeowners exposed to financial loss. Before the Warmseal deal was done we had already taken calls from people looking for answers and advice and will continue to be on hand for customers who still aren’t sure where they stand. Please see our advice piece at www.dgcos.org.uk/news/ safeglaze-uk-in-administration. But of course, if there is no Deposit Protection or Underwritten Guarantee in place (often referred to as an IBG), or if there is an IBG in place with limited scope or unfair exclusions, the homeowner is set to lose out.

DGCOS installer members are able to reassure their customers and guarantee hand on heart, that their customers will be protected should the worst happen. With over 1 million doors and windows in UK homes currently protected by DGCOS since 2010, professional installers can always turn to us to protect their business, their customers and their reputations. Peace of Mind cannot be underestimated, especially at times like these when these issues are brought to the fore.

It might be easy to think this is someone else’s problem. But it isn’t. It’s a tough lesson to learn for consumers and we shouldn’t bury our heads in the sand. If you work in the glazing sector it is your problem, by association. There is no doubt that in the wake of this recent sizeable liquidation, consumers will become even more aware of the small print and what they are really buying. This heightened fear factor can affect us all. Once again, our industry is under scrutiny and we need something concrete in place to reassure concerned consumers and journalists. DGCOS will be writing to the other leaders in the sector, particularly of trade bodies, Com-

Yours sincerely, Tony Pickup, Founder, DGCOS

Roseview Windows Brings Innovative Designs

With Georgian Bar

Window manufacturer of PVCu sash windows, Roseview Windows says astragal bar from The Georgian Bar Company is its number one choice. Manufacturing around 600 windows a week from its busy factory, the highly successful company understands the importance of design.

The two companies work closely to bring the very latest in style for windows being installed into both traditional and modern homes. “We continue to innovate designs to bring sash windows bang up to date,” says Willie Kerr, Managing Director at Roseview Windows. “We don’t stick to just squares, we create all sorts of 34 WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019

designs for customers. Thinking differently with the design uplifts replacement heritage windows into something that’s highly desirable for all properties.”

Roseview manufactures three brands of sash windows using two window systems, and when it comes to astragal bars there’s only one it chooses for its top window designs – The Georgian Bar Company. Ultimate Rose offers customers the very best in quality and styling, as Roseview’s top selling brand it has proven to be very popular. Willie adds: “Georgian Bar Company astragal bars are a

significant part of the design and more than 70 percent of sash windows from Roseview include them. We offer elegant styling for traditional properties and often recreate the exact look based on the timber windows being replaced. This means there’s no compromise, as they are getting all the modern benefits of top-performing, energy-efficient and high security windows. But we don’t just work in the heritage sector. A large proportion of our windows end up in new build homes because housebuilders can create an individual style on an estate by installing stunning windows. British homebuyers want the convenience of a new home but still want the traditional elegance. “It’s thanks to The Georgian Bar Company’s clever design that Roseview Windows can create such amazing features with astragal bars in both traditional and modern homes.” www.geofast.co.uk

Yorkshire based manufacturer Quickslide are determined to keep their award-winning Vertical Sliding windows at the forefront of the fenestration industry, having developed high security components to ensure the product now passes the test for PAS 24:2016. Specialist 316 Marine Grade hardware manufacturer blu has launched its new LP400 Stainless Steel letter plate following best in class results against the new BS EN Air Permeability, Water Tightness and Wind Resistance tests. Claimed to be the only back-toback sleeved letter plate on the market with an integrated brush and gasket weather seal system, the new LP400 achieved the highest possible results when undergoing the BS EN test against extreme air, wind and water:

What Do the Test Results Mean? Air Permeability Test – BS EN 12207:2000 – measures the volume of air that passes through the letter plate at different pressures. Class 4 is the highest class and was successfully achieved by the LP400. Water Tightness Test – BS EN 12208:2000 – in this test, water is forced at the letter plate through water nozzles, to represent driving rain, at differing pressures for lengthening periods of time. The

highest designated class is A9, which indicates the letter plate withstood 600 Pa of water pressure for 55 minutes without compromise. Wind Resistance Test – BS EN 12210:2001 – this tests at which point draughts can get through the letter plate. Class 5 is the highest classification which is achieved after withstanding 2000 Pa. The LP400 achieved 3000 Pa, which is equivalent to a wind speed of approx. 152mph! Anything above a wind speed of 74mph is classed as a hurricane so the LP400 is well able to withstand anything the British weather can throw at it. Delivering classic styling with a contemporary twist, the new LP400 is available in a number of finishes manufactured from corrosion-resistant 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel, which is also Part Q compliant. Atul Patel, Joint Managing Director of Unique Window Systems, said machinery investment formed a key element of the company’s growth strategy; delivering efficiencies and volume, whilst guaranteeing product quality. He said: “Our growth has been underpinned by our commitment to product quality and service. You can’t deliver that at volume without investment in machinery. “The outputs – but most importantly – the quality of product that we have been able to deliver through the SL4FF, have been critical to our growth. We have volume, but we have exceptional quality. 48 WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019

“Forecast demand for premium products, particularly foils, but also WarmCore, have driven our decision to expand that capacity still further as part of our long-term strategy.” According to Palmer, PVC-U sales were up by 8% at the last count, driven by a significant leap in sales of foiled products. This, the Palmer report suggests, was most clearly illustrated in the window market, where a 1.2% increase in overall volumes to 6.82m frames, was outstripped by the increase in installed value of 5.5% to £2.38bn. This was driven by demand for foils including both woodgrains and solid colours – up 45% since 2013.

The SL4FF and updated SL4FFEvo both employ an on-board control system and CAD Scan software, which maps the profile chamber configuration directly from a standard photocopier scanner. This allows the operator to work with actual dimensions rather than profile related drawings, bringing a new level of accuracy and finish perfection. According to Promac, the SL4FF not only delivers a better-quality product but can also deliver a twofold increase in productivity compared to other traditional manufacturing processes. This is in part because the SL4FF eliminates any requirement for cooling tables and corner cleaning, also giving it a space-saving footprint of just 25 sq metres. The machinery platform is self-contained with installed extraction and automatic heater plate cleaning, reducing downtime for any manual intervention. For maintenance and service, the SL4 FF is also equipped with on board self-diagnostic software and can be accessed via remote support.

Supplied exclusively in the UK by the Promac Group, having precleaned to exacting tolerances, the SL4FF zip welds the corner joint whilst controlling the flow of sprue, delivering a seamless but incredibly strong corner joint.

Joe Hague, Managing Director, Promac Group said: “The SL4FF has delivered a step change in manufacture. As one of the most innovative platforms to be launched in the UK in a decade or more, it delivers exceptional precision in manufacture over and over again, giving you volume and outstanding quality.

In addition to WarmCore, Unique’s other premium offering is Eurocell’s Modus flush casement system. Unique employs its existing Graf to support its customers in pitching this high-end offer against other top end systems, including R9.

“The SL4FF-Evo has been refined again, accommodating even greater tolerances to bring even more precision to manufacture. Unique’s decision to invest in a second platform is testimony to the quality and efficiencies that it delivers.”

Paul Whyman of Dragon Wood Homes said: “The age of the building and differing window styles meant we needed to work with a fabrication partner who could deliver bespoke energy-efficient windows that also achieved the right balance from a conservation point of view. Mercury Glazing are an established specialist fabricator and their products, combined with the cutting-edge technology delivered by Spectus, more than met these exacting standards. The quality of the products is superb and we are delighted with the overall high quality result.” seaside apartments. Working with main contractor and developer Dragon Wood Homes, the twelve-month project involved Mercury undertaking the manufacture and supply of 204 bespoke windows, which included a mixture of arched top vertical sliders, bowed vertical sliders, circular windows and standard vertical sliders. The windows were manufactured from Spectus’ ver-

tical sliding and Elite 70 window systems and were produced in white woodgrain foil finish on both sides. Originally constructed in 1906 as a prestigious 100 room cliffside hotel, Cliff House sits in a conservation area. It meant the restoration needed to be as sympathetic as possible and maintain its original features, including its sash windows.

Carmen Velilla, Brand Manager at Spectus, said: “The Spectus Vertical Slider is renowned in the industry for its ability to combine outstanding heritage aesthetics with modern day thermal efficiency and security. In Cliff House we can see this on a grand scale. We were delighted to work alongside Mercury and Dragon Wood Homes to give this beautiful building a new lease of life.” www.spectus.co.uk WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019 51

ON SITE The windows have a sash that is neatly positioned inside the frame of the window to create an elegant and sleek ‘flush’ appearance that delivers the appearance of aluminium, especially when complemented with a RAL 7016 smooth foil finish on white. The window has a maximum opening size of 1450 x 2300mm and offers exceptional performance because it has an air permeability value of 600Pa, a water tightness value of 600Pa and a wind resistance value of 2400Pa. The window is Secured by Design accredited and meets PAS24:2016 standards for security. Other key elements in the specification of the windows for Agard Court were the use of acoustic glazing on road elevations and the use of clear solar control glazing on south facing elevations. The combination of a busy city centre site and the Structural Steel Framing System (SFS) construction of the build were complex, but Kingfisher proved more than able to cope. The company’s team is experienced in working closely with other on-site teams to ensure installation runs smoothly and on schedule. As a result, installation was completed on time and on budget.

Cutting Edge

Glazing Gives Italian 5-Star Hotel Stylish Edge

ON SITE handles could be fixed directly to the glass, allowing a frameless minimalist look. The mirrors above the sink are also created using the same material allowing seamless integration with the other glazed elements. Again, the glass was toughened throughout to prevent breakages and protect the safety of the hotel’s users. Pilkington Mirropane™ Chrome Plus also boasts a corrosion-resistant coating, making it ideal for use in a bathroom by helping to prevent the mirror being damaged by frequent exposure to humidity.

In hotel design, building aesthetics play a big role in creating luxurious accommodation for guests. That was the challenge facing the designers of a major refurbishment to the glamourous Park Hotel Imperial, located in Limone on the shore of Lake Garda, Italy. The hotel features glass elements extensively, inside and out, and the designer of the re-model chose to use two Pilkington products extensively in the project – Pilkington Optiwhite™ low-iron, extra clear glass and Pilkington Mirropane™ Chrome Plus toughenable mirror. The hotel makes use of glass in the balustrades on the balconies, making up a significant portion of the building’s envelope, as well as in many rooms to screen the bathroom from the main living quarters. Much of the glass is used as frameless, laminated panes. When the edges of a thick piece of glass are visible, the colour of the glass becomes especially pronounced, and the natural green tint of standard float glass becomes noticeable.

By using Pilkington Optiwhite™, the features instead have an almost colourless appearance, lending a cleaner and more contemporary feel to the design. Externally, the balcony glazing is screen printed with a white fade, lending a key design element as well as delivering the right combination of stunning views and privacy for residents. The low-iron glass ensured the white colour of the paint applied to the glass shines out to maximum effect.

Ulisse Bonesi, manager at glazing specifier Vetraria Bergamasca Tecnovetro, said: “We chose Pilkington Mirropane™ Chrome Plus because the requirement was for large mirrors that rely on maintenance-free coating rather than reflective backing that can deteriorate over time. The client also required a simple, light, frameless, opaque glass door. This product fully meets both expectations.” Leo Pyrah, product manager at Pilkington UK, said: “The hotel is a superb showcase for these two products, really demonstrating how high-quality glazing combined with tasteful design can help lend a sense of luxury to a building.

Elsewhere in the design, Pilkington Mirropane™ Chrome Plus, a toughenable mirror product, was used to integrate mirrored elements. In many suites the product was etched with leaf and branch motifs and mounted as wall art, backed by a white panel that shows through to create a striking white-on-mirror effect.

“The view over the lake is arguably the hotel’s most notable feature, and our low-iron extra clear glass will make sure it can be enjoyed in all its glory by guests with absolutely minimal distortion or discoloration.”

In the bathrooms, mirrored shower doors offer privacy to guests while also serving as a full-length mirror.

Total Glass

Delivers Technical Glazed Façade For

Menai Science Park Building Fenestration specialist Total Glass supplied and installed the technically-advanced Sapa aluminium glazing façade at the impressive Menai Science Park (M-Sparc) building – Wales’ first dedicated science park on Anglesey. Officially opened in May 2018 and operated by Bangor University, the £20 million science park Menai Science Park (M-SParc) brings together businesses from the ICT, science and research sectors and is set up to provide expertise and support to local enterprise. The 5000m² flagship building comprises laboratories, office and workshop space, meeting 54 WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019

rooms and a café. Its unique front elevation is characterised by a continuous flowing ‘ribbon’ cladding system that forms the floor, wall and roof surfaces, wrapping around the glazed façade. Working closely with FaulknerBrowns Architects and main contractor Willmott Dixon, the Total Glass team was involved at

an early stage due to the complexity of the structure’s curved design. Total Glass installed a total of 1,650 m² of Sapa Elegance 52 curtain walling and roof glazing in the building. Spanning 74 metres by 11 metres, the front elevation makes the most of far-reaching scenic views over Snowdonia. All the façade systems were finished in a grey RAL 7031 marine powder-coat finish with two glass solar control specifications used to deliver the external reflective effect. The project presented some technical challenges, as Chris Valentine, Technical Manager at Total Glass explains: “As the façade forms the building’s main waterproof line, it was crucial to get the interfacing detailing right between the curves of the cladding and the curtain walling, especially regarding drainage. This required the aluminium curtain walling to be curved to follow the flowing shape of the cladding.”

ON SITE Another challenging design feature was the 6-metre-long glazed walkway that connects the two-storey entrance area to the brick-built main building. Here the curtain walling follows the contours across the double-pitched roof at an angle. Chris continues: “Accommodating the difficult compound angles required a lot of calculations and modelling to achieve the architectural vision.” Total Glass also fabricated and installed three types of doors throughout the building, including Sapa’s high-performance Stormframe ST II Aluminium Door system for access to an enclosed central courtyard. These were specified at 2.8m high to allow access for mobile work platforms for window cleaning purposes. Proving access from the cafeteria to the courtyard is a thermally-insulated aluminium sliding door using Sapa’s C125 Aluminium Sliding Door system. Balcony doors above ground floor level use the Sapa Dualframe 75 HP Aluminium Hinged Door. Total Glass installed a total of 132 Sapa DF 75 Si casement windows, some within the curtain wall façade and others overlooking the courtyard. The double-height internal glazing to the boardroom also features the Sapa Elegance 52 curtain wall, incorporating a high glass specification for extra privacy and improved acoustic performance. Commenting on their fivemonth-long involvement with the project, Total Glass Operations Manager (Aluminium) Andy Sheil says: “Despite some difficult weather conditions, installation of the curtain walling, windows and entrance doors was completed successfully and on time. The whole team is proud to have played an integral part of this prestigious scheme.” www.totalglass.com

Wiltshire-based SJ Window Installations has recently completed a domestic project using Residence 9 windows and French doors from the Glazerite UK Group Ltd. Specifying Clotted Cream on the exterior combined with a White Ash interior, the installation matched an existing R9 window fitted in a previous extension on the property, which is situated in the Wiltshire village of Little Somerford. A total of nine windows and a pair of French doors were installed over five days by Simon Jordan, owner of SJ Window Installations, who was carrying out his first ever Residence Collection project. He says: “This was the first time I’ve installed Residence 9 though I’ve used the Halo FlushSash in a number of properties of late. Both are great systems and alongside the R7 – which I also have access to via Glazerite – I have a number of flush sash solutions for customers, whatever their needs or budget.” Simon adds: “The marketing done by Residence Collection in support of both R9 and R7 is impressive, and this particular customer found me via the installer search

on their website, which is fantastic. “By working with Glazerite, I also have access to their own technical and marketing support which has been invaluable for my business. I’m able to call on them at any time, whether that’s to double check measurements for a complex project or the design and build of my website.” Giovanni Sangiovanni of Glazerite’s Southwest division says: “SJ Window Installations is a great example of an installer who is taking advantage of the marketing available from the Residence Collection. Having a profile on their online installer search facility results in great leads. Simon is passionate about quality and R9 is a premium product that has helped him to deliver a stunning installation.” This year SJ Window Installations is celebrating 21 years in business. Louvre System For Coventry Uni Student Accommodation IKON Aluminium Systems has supplied its IKL505 aluminium barrier louvre system for student accommodation at Coventry University. The IKL505 60mm elliptical blade barrier louvres were installed in 280 apertures across The Cycle Works, a purpose-built hall comprising single ensuite bedrooms and studio bedrooms, arranged in flats of 5-12 residents. The Raglan Street hall of residence was developed by Sir Robert McAlpine on behalf of the University. With around 350 bedrooms and 500 windows, it was important that the product specification and build balanced natural light and ventilation, with safety. It was recognised that in order to create a healthy and comfort56 WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019

able environment for the students, good airflow would also be required. With this in mind, aluminium barrier louvres were specified. The IKL505 louvres were fitted by specialist installation company, Campbell Mason, in selected window and door apertures throughout the building. The barrier louvre, effectively a grill designed to cover areas where fall from height could be an issue, negates the need for windows and doors to have restrictor systems fully engaged, all of the time. They help limit the risk of persons falling or items being thrown or accidently dropped out of the opening, from height, onto the area or people below. It is essentially, a safety barrier.

The IKL505 aluminium barrier louvre system installed at The Cycle Works is impact resistance tested to BS EN 13049:2003, achieving Class 5, and wind resistance tested to BS EN12211:2000 and BS EN 12210:2000, achieving Class 4. To complement the brick and render façade of the new build student accommodation, the barrier louvres were powder coated in Grey (RAL 7043). Designed specifically for student accommodation, IKON Aluminium Systems’ offers a variety of barrier louvres, each independently tested and developed to comply with Building Regulation Part K (protection from falling, collision and impact). The barrier louvres are an integral part of the correct functioning of the residence. Rob Talliss, Director of Estate Development at Coventry University said: “We were very pleased with the work undertaken and the product itself.”

Kingfisher Windows Kits Out Multi-Million

Pound Student Complex In Derby

ON SITE Kingfisher Windows, was completed on time and students from the University of Derby have now moved in. Jonny Reynolds, Technical Director at Kingfisher Windows, said the Derby project was a resounding success and had led to the company securing another significant contract. Jonny says: “The fixing system used meant that the pre-glazed windows could be fitted directly into the steel framing system, so the internal fit out could begin at the same time as the brick façade was being erected. This reduced the overall build time.” The SFS system was constructed to include brackets designed to support the load of the windows. The windows were installed with an EPDM seal around the perimeter of the frame, making the interior airtight and watertight. The Agard Court development forms part of a reformation project in Derby that included the recreation of a street that vanished from the city more than 140 years ago. “It was really interesting to watch the building take shape,” Jonny adds. “Within a 16-week time scale, we had manufactured, supplied and fitted all the glazing.

A £17m student flat development, with more than 200 bedrooms, is the latest project to be completed by Kingfisher Windows. Award winning Kingfisher Windows used an innovative installation method to fit Optima Flush tilt & turn PVCu windows to the nine-storey high Agard Court development in Derby. The flush tilt & turn windows were chosen as a value engineered product to reduce costs but replicate aluminium, to maximise space and provide ample natural light for

the new student accommodation. The frame finish was RAL 7016 smooth grey foil on white. Specialist glazing was specified acoustically to minimise outside road noise and clear Sn70-37, mitigating solar gain whilst allowing high natural light levels. Safety was paramount due to occupants and each window was fitted with cable restrictors to protect students from the risk of falls. The large-scale commercial project, valued at £150,000 by

tries and sectors, the glass and glazing industry is finally waking up to finance and its potential to grow a business,” comments Austin Barcley, Managing Director of Improveasy. “We are therefore delighted to announce our appearance at the FIT Show 2019.

“For installers, it’s simply a matter of urgency as homeowners change their buying habits and prioritise installers who offer multiple ways to pay. For those, we offer flexible finance options including 0% APR and our new ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ package. For fabricators and other businesses, finance not only provides an extra incentive for customers to join their network but makes large investments such as machinery, new vehicles or commercial equipment far easier. At every level, our service is designed to support business growth and development, and we look forward to sharing that

message with visitors at next year’s event.”

Improveasy supports businesses across every part of the industry providing competitive finance along with full training and support. By adopting Improveasy as a finance provider, businesses do not need to undergo the extensive process of gaining FCA approval. Instead, businesses become an Appointed Representative (AR) of Improveasy and can be up and running within 14 days of initial enquiry. Taking place at the NEC in Birmingham from the 21st to the 23rd of May 2019, the FIT Show will bring together businesses from all over the country and every sector of the industry. For the first time, FIT Show 2019 will also feature Visit Glass, a dedicated exhibition focused on the manufacture, processing and application of glass. www.improveasy.com

DGCOS Getting

Ready For FIT Leading consumer protection organisation DGCOS has announced that it will be exhibiting at the 2019 FIT Show to update the market first-hand on what they have to offer installers to help them genuinely stand out from the competition.

“We don’t want to give too much away yet,” says Tony Pickup, founder of DGCOS, “but we’ll be at the show in style to make sure savvy installers are aware of all the benefits available to them through our organisation. DGCOS is based on three core values: trust, confidence and peace of mind and our approachable team will be explaining at the show, exactly how these translate to sure fire success for

installers.

“We’re also hoping to host a special guest appearance at the show, when we introduce the new celebrity face of DGCOS to the market, in person. We’re keeping this a secret for now, but all will be revealed very soon. We’ll also have on the stand some examples of our exceptional marketing support – support that really does help close sales. – as well as free consumer advice, mediation and, if required, independent inspections “While we’ll be having some fun at the show, the serious message behind what we do will always come first. With 35

years’ industry experience, we understand that homeowners want transparency and peace of mind that they can trust the companies who are working in their homes. We also understand that it’s hard for installers to prove their worth up front. That’s where DGCOS can help. Through DGCOS membership installers can demonstrate to consumers that their products and service have added value over and above the rest of the market, a priceless addition to any installer offering.” www.dgcos.org.uk

CHARITY

“Emplas celebrated their 40th birthday with a large gathering of business associates and friends at their factory in Wellingborough. They ran a raffle on the day in aid of GM Fundraising and raised £1,359.

GM Fundraising Announces 2018 Fundraising Total As we start 2019, GM Fundraising announces that the final tally of funds raised last year on behalf of Hope House Children’s Hospices is in excess of £142,000, which takes their total amount raised over the last 22 years to £1.83 million. Gary Morton, founder of GM Fundraising comments: “With no large cycling event taking place last year, it was supposed to be a quiet one! Therefore, to be able to announce this fantastic total is testament to the continued generosity of our industry as a whole. Once again, our supporters have pulled together to help us support the children and families of Hope House Children’s Hospices, to whom we donate every penny we raise. “Predominantly, last year was about golf for us: We hosted our annual golf tournament in Telford, which raised £43,044 and we also saw the return of the GMF Cup – our prestigious Ryder Cup style golf competition. Many of the original team of 24 golfers returned to take up the GMF Cup challenge, which 64 WINDOW NEWS JANUARY 2019

took place in September at the world-class international resort of Quinta Do Lago in Portugal and raised a little under £45,000. Away from golf, the 20th GM Fundraising Gala Dinner – Circus Berserkus – celebrated our supporters take on the weird and wonderful world of the circus. From clowns to mime artists, strongmen to bearded and tattooed ladies, the evening was electric and raised £66,814.76 – the most we’ve ever raised at a Gala Dinner. “The remaining funds have been donated by our supporters from their own initiatives. For example, Caldwell Hardware has selected GM Fundraising as their nominated charity. This means that the proceeds from any fundraising carried out within the business, i.e. dress down days and other office events, are donated to GM Fundraising. This year they have donated £1,500.

“Brisant Secure celebrated the successful results of salt water testing on LockLock – donating £5,000 to mark the 5,000-hour test. They have also agreed to be headline sponsor of our next and last cycling challenge – ‘From Russia With Hope’. “Our aim is to raise £2m by 2020. #2by2020 Our focus for next year will be supporting the ‘From Russia With Hope’ team throughout the build-up and execution of the ride, where they will cycle 10 countries in 12 days, covering 2,730 miles and 34,000ft of climbing, before ending up at Hope House in Oswestry on 22nd June. We will also host our annual golf day. This is a great start, but we need your help too. If you have any events taking place next year or have an idea that you would like to put in to motion, then please get in touch with a member of the GM Fundraising team: Myself, Alan Sadler from Profix Group, Graeme Bailey from Business Micros, Susie Sinden from Brouha Marketing, Adrian Barraclough from Quickslide, or Alison Marsh from Hope House, will be happy to help if we can!” “Thank you once again from GM Fundraising for your ongoing support of the amazing work that Hope House delivers to the children and families in their care. We wish you season’s greeting and a healthy, prosperous 2019.”
